Drunken Dixon school bus driver gets probation

BY KATHLEEN A. SCHULTZ kschultz@shawmedia.com DIXON – A 56-year-old former Dixon school bus driver caught in May 2019 driving drunk with high school students on board must serve 4 years of probation and pay in excess of $25,000 in fines and fees, a Lee County judge ruled.

Timothy M. Cloutier pleaded guilty March 5 to aggravated DUI. As part of a plea agreement, another count of aggravated DUI, nine counts of endangering the life of a child and one count of reckless conduct, both misdemeanors, were dismissed.

On March 5, Circuit Court Judge Jacquelyn Ackert also

sentenced Cloutier to 180 days in jail, 200 hours of community service, and mandatory substance abuse treatment.

According to the charging document filed May 24, 2019, Cloutier’s BAC was higher than .08, and the nine students involved all were younger than 18.

Illinois Central School Bus Co. contacted the Dixon Police

Department that May 15 to report an incident involving an intoxicated driver that happened the day before. Officers spoke with three company employees who were working that day, and gathered other evidence.

Cloutier was arrested around 11 a.m. May 28 in the 600 block of Marclare Street.

Body of Freeport man found north of Savanna

SCHULTZ kschultz@shawmedia.com SAVANNA – A man found dead on Wednesday, March 10 in the Mississippi River at Miller’s Boat Landing, 6898 Marina Road, four miles north of Savanna, has been identified as Keith A. Heidenreich Jr. 46, of Freeport, the Carroll County sheriff said in a March 12 news release.

Heidenreich’s death is being investigated as suspicious, Sheriff Ryan Kloepping said in the release.

The body was found around 8:20 a.m. near the edge of the river, off state Route 84 at the northern entrance to Palisades State Park.

The Northwest Illinois Critical Incident Response Team is investigating.

The Savanna Police Department,

Savanna Fire Department, Savanna Community Ambulance, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Police, Illinois State Police Crime Scene Services, and Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene.

FATAL FIRE

SCHULTZ kschultz@shawmedia.com ROCK FALLS – The elevator at Civic Plaza 1 still is waiting on parts, and because it is not yet working, none of the residents displaced by the fire will be moving back into the building for at least another week, Whiteside County Housing Authority Executive Director Chuck Adams said.

The Housing Authority paid for a week’s stay at one of the town’s four hotels and motels for the more than 70 people who needed it, and Tri-County Opportunities Council will be paying for the next week, and a week after that if still needed, Adams said.

No one is being asked to leave, and in fact, those who spent the last week with friends or family and now need a room will be accommodated, Adams said.

Letters to that effect were sent this week to those residents they

could locate; residents who have been staying elsewhere but haven’t been in contact are asked to call Tri-County or the Housing Authority so officials know where to send information and how to get in touch with them.

The nine-story, 100-unit public housing high rise was home to 104 people, many elderly or disabled.

One resident, Eunice Karr, was found dead; the fire started in her fifth-floor apartment around 10:45 p.m. March 5, fire officials said.

There is no word yet from the state fire marshal’s office as to the cause of the fire, or from the coroner as to a cause of death.

Cleaning crews are focusing their efforts on the least-damaged apartments, so as many people as possible can be moved back in as soon as the elevator is fixed; they have been working daily since the fire and will be working again over the weekend, Adams said.

BRIEFS University student from Milledgeville helps raise $1.4 million for childrens hospital IOWA CITY, Iowa – Holly Smith of Milledgeville was one of more than 1,400 current University of Iowa students who participated in the 27th annual student-led Dance Marathon which raised more than $1.4 million for the University of Iowa Stead Family Childrens Hospital.

The final tally raised by the students, who were inspired by the theme of this year’s Dance Marathon: “Rise with Resilience,” was $1,422,443.27, a total which pushed the amount of support generated by Dance Marathon over the course of its history to more than $31 million.

Dance Marathon works to create special projects to provide emotional and financial support to families treated at the UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital with an emphasis on pediatric cancer and bone marrow transplant patients.

It committed $5 million of support to the construction of the UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital where the 11th floor is named the University of Iowa Pediatric Oncology Unit.

OBITUARIES JUANITA J. ADOLPH PLAINS, MONTANA — Juanita Jean Adolph passed away on March 5, 2021 at Clark Fork Valley Hospital in Plains, Montana.

Juanita was born in Morrison Hospital on Aug. 17, 1948, the daughter of Richard and Alice (Queckboerner) Adolph.

Juanita attended and graduated from Fair Haven grade school and then from the Chadwick High School Class of 1966. She wanted to be a nurse and received her Licensed Practical Nurse degree from CGH Hospital in Sterling in 1967 and began her working career.

In the 70’s she went to Baylor Med. School in Dallas, Texas, where she took a course in operating room technician skills. She loved the outdoors, open spaces and wildlife and went to Plains, Montana, from Dallas, applied for a job, received it, and never returned to Illinois except to visit.

She enjoyed the mountains, hiking,

Juanita is survived by one sister, Sharon Kappes and a sister-in-law, Deb Adolph. She also leaves six nieces and nephews, thirteen great-nieces, nephews, and also many friends that she considered family from Montana.

She was preceded by her parents; a brother, Terry; many aunts and uncles and a great-great nephew.

Private graveside services will be held at Chadwick Cemetery with Reverend Tracy A. Maass of First Lutheran Church of Chadwick, officiating.

He is employed by Lutheran Social Services of Illinois in West Peoria and works as a licensed social worker.

The bride to be is the daughter of Michael and Kathleen Pabon of Peoria. She graduated from Peoria Notre Dame High School and Illinois State University.

She is currently employed by the IVC School district and teaches first grade at Mossville Elementary School.

appy Saint Patrick’s Day! While I have not an ounce of Irish in me that I am aware of, it is a holiday I love.

I enjoy decorating for it, the theme, everything. Once I learned how to make a tender corned beef brisket, I had a serious go to food.

Food Brings Everyone to the Table is the theme for National Ag Day. You can take this how you want as there are a number of ways.

One thing I thought of first is how it takes many different farmers to fill the table with food. It takes our livestock farmers for the meat, it takes vegetable farmers for our side dishes, it takes a dairy farmer to have the milk, butter, and cheese.

Another way to look at it is all those who are involved in getting that food to your table.

It takes the farmer of course and it takes all who help him. It takes his insurance agent who insures his farm. It takes his banker who the loan comes from. It takes the implement dealer who sold him the equipment he needs to plant and harvest the crop. It takes the service company who provides him with imputs he needs.

It takes the grain elevator employees, it takes the truckers, it takes the food processing companies, it takes a veterinarian, it takes merchandisers, it takes grocery stores and their employees. As you see my list can go on, and on. I know I left out a

number of people who are involved.

Another way to look at the theme, is bringing family and friends together. Things I know have changed as families are no longer on the same schedule all the time. Things were simpler when I was growing up as I remember always eating dinner at the table as a family.

We also used to go to my grandparents every Sunday for dinner. We drove from Prophetstown to Milledgeville each week. If you are familiar with route at all, there is no good way to get there.

I am still a firm believer in meals are eaten at the table but now things seem to be in shifts vs eating all together. However, food still plays a huge part in family functions and holidays.

Likely this is one of the things that was missed most socially during the pandemic, but also something that likely improved at home.

Milledgeville boys basketball coach Brad Grenoble once was a man in need.

A fire destroyed his house about 16 years ago, and the people of Milledgeville and Chadwick rallied around him. He eventually was able to rebuild in rural Chadwick, just down the road from Ted and Becky Bryant.

“Our house burned down, and the community did something for my wife, my family and I,” Grenoble said. “Ted and Becky Bryant were big parts of that. He’s like a second dad to my kids. He’s in the community. The guy’s been a volunteer firefighter forever and he’s a paramedic, so he’s helped tons of people.”

Grenoble is now using basketball as a way to help Ted Bryant, who was recently diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma Triple Hit. Unlike a majority of lymphomas that have a single genetic mutation,

Bree Borum poured in 33 points, and twin sister Brook scored 15 for Sterling.

Addie McCombs added eight, and Hailey Walters scored seven.

Amboy 66, Polo 27: The Clippers jumped out to a 28-3 lead after the opening quarter and never looked back in an NUIC East win at home.

Gabby Jones scored a game-high 18 points, and also had seven rebounds and four steals for Amboy. Abi Payne added 14 points and eight assists, and Mallory Powers finished with 11 points and five assists. Brianna Blaine had eight points

BOYS BASKETBALL Sterling 71, United Township 69, 2OT: The Golden Warriors outlasted the Panthers in a Western Big 6 win in East Moline, thanks to an 8-6 scoring edge in the second extra period.

Sterling led 30-24 at halftime and 43-412 after three quarters before the teams ended regulation tied at 55. Both teams scored eight in the first overtime.

Carter Ryan, J.P. Schilling and Noel Aponte all scored 14 points in a balanced effort by the Warriors.

Polo 44, Amboy 27: The Marcos led 17-5 after the first quarter and 23-12 at halftime of an NUIC East win at home.

Tyler Merdian’s 13 points led Polo, and Parker Wolber scored 11.

Rockridge 56, Fulton 47: The Steamers dropped a Three Rivers West game on the road in their season finale, falling

behind 33-24 by halftime and trailing 45-35 after three quarters.

Orion 54, Morrison 44: The Mustangs lost a Three Rivers West home game, as the Chargers pulled away after halftime.

Erie-Prophetstown 49, Hall 47: The Panthers used a 19-12 scoring edge in the fourth quarter to rally for a Three Rivers East win in Erie.

Connor Sibley scored 15 points, and Kolby Franks added 13 for Erie-Prophetstown, which trailed led 22-20 halftime, but trailed 35-30 after three quarters.

For the next six months, Bryant will travel to CGH Medical Cebter in Sterling every three weeks for 96 consecutive hours of chemotherapy.

His first session was completed the week of Feb. 15, and the next begins this week.

It’s going to be a tough road to recovery for Bryant, 52, who works as a paramedic at CGH and is also a volunteer firefighter in Chadwick.

That sparked an idea from Grenoble: a free-throw pledge.

All 26 Missiles basketball players went out in the community and sought pledges for each made free throw made out of 100. Pledges ranged from 25 cents to $5 for each conversion.

Senior guard Treyton Selman lined up 30 donors, and noted he didn’t have to do a whole lot of convincing to do so.

“They saw the situation and they know how hard it is to deal with cancer,” Selman said. “They just wanted to help out.”

Shooting day was a nongame day for the Missiles. After practice, all of the hoopsters convened in the gym and spread out over six baskets.

They would shoot 10 free throws, write down the number of makes, rebound for the next shooter, and keep going until 100 shots were attempted.

Selman, an 89% free-throw shooter this season, was a bit jittery before toeing the line.

Led by Selman, the Missiles made 1,735 out of 2,600 attempts, for a 66.7% conversion rate. Selman made 67 in a row at one point, and 98 out of 100 overall. Kieren Harris (91), Ashton Nobis (84), Chase Sarber (80), Izaak Toms-Smith (79) and Eric Ebersole (79) also were impressive.

The Missiles are collecting the money this weekend and will present a check to the Bryant family on Tuesday.

“That’s going to be exciting,” senior guard Jake Gallegos said.

“It’s fun to do something like this – making free throws for a good cause.

It’s a real nice thing we’re doing.”

Ted Bryant graduated from Chadwick High School in 1987, Becky Bryant a year after that, and their

daughter Elizabeth graduated from Milledgeville High in 2012.

“He’s just always there,” Grenoble said of his neighbor and friend.

“He goes to games and he donates money at booster events. Both him and Becky, they’d give the shirt off their backs to help other people.

“I think when people need help, it’s nice to give back to people who have given so much to their community.”

Traditional spring sports to have state finals IHSA says baseball, softball, track and more will play for championships

BY JOE STEVENSON joestevenson@shawmedia.com Coaches and athletes in the IHSA traditional spring sports around Illinois are rejoicing after learning last week that state finals are planned for their sports in June.

The COVID-19 pandemic wiped out the entire spring sports season in 2020, along with the boys basketball state tournaments.

The IHSA Board of Directors met Monday and approved a recommendation to set dates and parameters for badminton, baseball, softball, bass fishing, boys gymnastics, boys tennis, boys volleyball, girls soccer, journalism, boys and girls lacrosse, boys and girls track and field and boys and girls water polo.

Boys and girls lacrosse and boys volleyball cannot conduct state finals under current Illinois Department of Public Health mitigations.

However, the board approved plans to host those state finals in hopes that mitigation changes will allow for it by that time.

The state series guidelines will be posted online and shared with coaches and personnel later this week.

The IHSA also released a statement that outdoor sports can increase their attendance over the limit of 50 from indoor sports.

Under the IDPH guidelines, schools within regions under Phase 4 mitigations are allowed up to 20% capacity for outdoor events.

“We have been adamant in our discussions with IDPH that we believe we can safely and responsibly expand spectator guidelines

without risking the general public to greater exposure to COVID-19,” IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson said.

“This felt like a commonsense change, especially as we evaluated collegiate and pro sport spectator guidelines in the state, and are happy for the student-athletes who will be participating in IHSA outdoor sports this spring and summer, as well as for their families and friends.”

In the fall, the IHSA’s postseason series for sports considered low risk (boys and girls cross country, boys and girls golf, girls tennis and girls swimming) ended with sectional competitions.

The last state finals in an IHSA sports were last year’s Classes 3A and 4A girls basketball tournaments in early March.

Now, with lower COVID-19 numbers around the state, the IHSA can have its state finals in sports that did not get any season at all a year ago.

The IHSA also will be posting a sport-by-sport mitigation guidance later in the week so those in spring sports (now considered the “summer season” in May and June by the IHSA) can better prepare for their seasons.
