Community solar farms are cropping up in region

BY KATHLEEN A. SCHULTZ kschultz@shawmedia.com MORRISON – ComEd customers are being invited to enroll in a solar energy program powered by four new community solar farms that went online last week in Whiteside County.

The four farms have a total capacity of 11.2 megawatts, which can power about 1,600 homes and small businesses, according to a news release from Engie North America, the Houston-based arm of French utility company Engie that developed and built the farms, and Solstice, a Boston-based community solar provider that enrolls customers and manages their accounts.

The solar farms are built on land that has been supplemented with native prairie pollinator habitats, the release said.

Three are in Lyndon – one at 19742 Bunker Hill Road and two at the same site at 12213 Yorktown Road – and the fourth is at 14488 Hillside Road in Morrison.

Each will pay about $11,000 in annual property taxes.

Their development and construction involved about 80 full-time workers.

ComEd customers who enroll in the program may save up to an estimated 20% on the supply portion of their monthly electric bills and receive a $100 enrollment bonus, the release said.

Bluestem Energy Solutions, in partnership with Jo-Carroll Energy, took its 2.3 megawatt solar project ,with two solar array sites in Apple Canyon and Mount Carroll, online last month. In Whiteside County, four community solar farms owned by Engie North America became operational Tuesday. Three are in Lyndon, one is in Morrison.

County to participate; enrollment will be closed once 1,600 or so businesses and individuals have signed up.

Residents who enroll in community solar are allocated a portion of a solar farm based on their annual electricity usage. They receive credits for the electricity their solar panels produce on their utility bills.

“Through a subscription-based model, community solar makes clean energy accessible to renters, apartment-dwellers and those who are unable to put solar panels on their roofs,” the release said.

er Illinois residents to take part in the clean energy transition,” Luis Felipe Birolini, head of distributed renewables for ENGIE North America, said in the release.

“The projects demonstrate Engie North America’s belief that good business must also be good for the environment and communities. In conjunction with Solstice, our solar projects enable more Americans to save money while supporting the

installation of clean, local energy – produced right here in northern Illinois.”

Both Engie and Solstice are working through the Illinois Shines Program, also known as the Adjustable Block Program, implemented by the Illinois Power Agency to promote new solar development.

These community solar farms produce local solar power and renewable energy credits that are sold to the Illinois Shines program to help the state reach its renewable energy goals.

This is not the first community solar project to get going in Whiteside County and invite enrollment.

One owned by Borrego Solar Systems (www.clearwaycommunitysolar.com) at 12876 Blue Goose Road on the eastern outskirts of Morrison began producing energy in the fall, and another, at 3921 Matznick Road in Tampico owned by Nexamp Community Solar (illinois.nexamp.com), has gotten its permits and will be activated soon, Building and Zoning Administrator Suzy Stickle said.

Two more are in the process of getting their permits, Stickle said.

Brave enough to go bald? Lanark woman has a fundraiser for you March 13 event to benefit childhood cancer research

She has created a Facebook page – Carrroll County, IL - St. Baldrick’s “Brave the Shave” – where people can sign up, donate and get more information. She also created an Instagram page: “St.Baldrickscarrollcounty” Cozzolino was shorn for St Baldrick’s in 2018, and will do so again on March 13.

She’s planning a double dose of do-gooding: The hair she cuts off will be donated to Locks of Love, a nonprofit that makes wigs for cancer patients and others dealing with hair loss.

According to the Facebook page: “Worldwide, over 300,000 children are diagnosed with cancer each year.

Only one out of five will survive. When children lose their hair, during their chemo treatments, it can be a scary and emotional period. St. Baldrick’s aims to make things less scary. Not only will we

“It’s baffling to me that out of the total amount of money that’s granted to cancer research each year, only 4% of those funds are delegated to childhood cancer research,” Cozzolino said in a news release.

Last month, a 2.3-megawatt solar farm developed and owned by Bluestem Energy Solutions (www.bluestemenergysolutions.com), became operational in Mount Carroll and Apple Canyon Lake. Omaha-based Bluestem Energy Solutions partnered with Jo-Carroll Energy for the project, which has two solar array sites.

Community solar farms produce up to 2 megawatts of energy, as opposed to utility farms, which can produce far more.

Three major utility-grade farms are in the works in Lee County.

The Lee County Board is poised to vote on a 3,800-acre solar project proposed just south of Dixon.

South Dixon Solar LLC, with Duke Energy Renewables, is petitioning the county for a special-use permit to build a 500-megawatt utility-grade project south of the industrial park on state Route 26 in South Dixon Township.

Minnesota-based Geronimo Energy was approved in September for a 175-megawatt, 1,300-acre solar farm near Eldena, and special-use permits have been granted for Steward Creek Solar LLC, of Virginia-based Hexagon Energy, to build a 600-megawatt solar farm across 5,000 acres in Alto and Willow Creek townships near Steward and Lee.

Krogman averaged 11.2 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.8 assists as a junior for the Class 1A state champion Cougars and was named third-team all-state by the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association as well as a unanimous all-conference pick in the NUIC South.

In volleyball, she recorded 279 kills, 165 digs, 50 blocks and 51 aces in 2019 and was named firstteam all-conference in the NUIC West.

Hello Everyone,

Sandra Aude, Local Coordinator for the AARP Taxes, has received the okay from AARP to do taxes.

There is an article with more information regarding taxes in this issue of the Grapevine.

AARP volunteers will be calling you to set up a time for you to bring your taxes in.

As Sandra states in her article they will not be doing face to face as they have done in the past. With Covid restrictions the process has changed some. Please read the article to get all the details.

We have been receiving serval calls regarding the Covid-19 shots, the Senior Center is not handling those.

If you are interested in the Covid19 shot please call the Carroll County Health Department at 815-244-8855.

They will get you on the appropriate list for your vaccination. However if you need a ride to get your vaccination please call CCT at 815244-1100.

Please remember our exercise and book room will be closed until further notice. We ask, since that room is closed, that you DO NOT donate any books to the Senior Center at this time.

Unfortunately in our new building we do not have the room for them as we did in our old building.

When dropping off papers at the Senior Center, please, drive around

back as we now have a separate entrance to drop them off.

We ask that you do not leave papers or cans at the front door. We greatly appreciate your cooperation in this matter.

If the back door is locked please put your items in the trailer. Please only put papers and cans in the trailer, nothing else.

For those of you who are not aware we no longer will be taking cardboard.

Don’t forget to call Carroll County Transit if you need a ride. They have their own phone number now.

Here’s what you need to know to avoid a vaccine-related scam: • You likely will not need to pay anything out of pocket to get the vaccine during this public health emergency.

• You can’t pay to put your name on a list to get the vaccine.

• You can’t pay to get early access

to the vaccine.

• No one from a vaccine distribution site or health care payer, like a private insurance company, will call you asking for your Social Security number or your credit card or bank account information to sign you up to get the vaccine.

• Beware of providers offering other products, treatments, or medicines to prevent the virus. Check with your health care provider before paying for or receiving any

COVID-19-related treatment.

If you get a call, text, email — or even someone knocking on your door — claiming they can get you early access to the vaccine, STOP. That’s a scam.

Activities Recycling Senior Service earns a great deal of money each year through the efforts of those who gather newspapers and aluminum cans in their respective communities, and those who bundle the paper and haul it to the local distribution centers.

We need more help with this project. The “gathering” people work just a couple of hours a month in their respective communities. The “bundlers” work at the Senior Center just about any day when they have an hour or two to spare. And the “loaders/haulers” help load and/or haul the papers to the distribution center.

Please do not leave papers or cans at the front door, please take them to the back of the building. If it is after hours or no one is in the recycling room just leave papers and cans in the trailer. Madison trips for Veterans Carroll County Transit and the Veterans Administration have opened up the days we can provide transportation to Madison VA Medical Center.

Senior Services Are You Turning 65?

Do you need help understanding Medicare A, B, C and D? Then come and see us at the Senior Center. We will help make this time easier for you.

Turning 65 can be very confusing with all the information you receive in the mail about which Medicare D Plan to take or which supplemental to get. If you are about to turn 65 and have questions, stop by and see our SHIP Counselors, Deb Connor and Karen Holm, and we can help you sort through the confusion.

Also remember to stop at the Carroll County Courthouse to complete your Senior Citizens Assessment Freeze Homestead Exemption application and affidavit.

When you turn 65 and become eligible for Medicare, the best time to enroll is during your Initial Enrollment Period. Your IEP includes the 3 months before, the month of, and the 3 months following your 65th birthday. If you enroll in Medicare during this time, you will avoid late enrollment penalties.

The date when your Medicare coverage begins depends on when you enroll during your IEP. For your coverage to begin as soon as possible, it is best to enroll in the first 3 months of your IEP. Your Medicare coverage will then go into effect starting the month you turn 65.

To enroll in Medicare, please stop by the Senior Center and we can do this for you. It is important to be proactive and take the steps to enroll during your IEP. If you miss your IEP, you may be limited to specific times when you can enroll in Medicare in the future, and you may face a penalty for late enrollment, resulting in higher premiums.

Hospice Services We now have Hospice brochures at the Senior Center for anyone that may be needing this service. If you are not familiar with these services they are a wonderful service to help prepare family and friends for the loss of a loved one, and also provides additional support often needed after the loss occurs.

Their emphasis is to assist families who desire to care for their loved one during the final phases of life. They care for the physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs of their patients and their families as they deal with this period of illness and bereavement.

Transportation CCT now has 4 Buses and 10 Vans, all wheel chair accessible, are available to take people to meals, medical appointments, and to do shopping and other errands in towns and around the county or to Freeport, Sterling, or Clinton. We have now added medical appointment to Monroe and Rockford with a 3 day notice.

If you need a ride, call 815-244-0011 at least at least 48 hours in advance to schedule your trip. For shopping trips there is a 5 bag limit due to space issues.

We provide this service to assist those who no longer drive or would rather have someone else do the driving. We can accommodate a few more riders. What is sustainable agriculture?

Many transitions have taken place in the agricultural industry over the last several decades. The widespread adoption of various technologies over the last 20-plus years has helped farmers streamline their operations, making their farms more efficient and less wasteful as a result. In addition, many farmers have embraced sustainable farming, which is a relatively recent approach to agriculture. According to the Union of Concerned Scientists, sustainable agriculture is a complex, multi-faceted concept. Sustainable agriculture intends to contribute to a robust economy by making farms profitable. Farmers who embrace sustainable agriculture also aim to have a positive effect on the environment and their surrounding ecosystems. That’s accomplished by embracing strategies that focus on building and maintaining healthy soil, managing water wisely, minimizing pollution, and promoting biodiversity. The National Institute of Food and Agriculture notes that sustainable agriculture encompasses a wide range of production practices, including some associated with conventional farming and some linked to organic farming. As a result, sustainable farming should not be mistaken for organic farming, or vice versa. However, the UCS notes there’s a strong likelihood that certified organic produce at local grocery stores are byproducts of farms that embrace sustainable agriculture.

Stimulant medications including amphetamines (e.g., Adderall) and methylphenidate (e.g., Ritalin and Concerta) are often prescribed to treat children, adolescents, or adults diagnosed with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Prescription stimulants have a calming and “focusing” effect on individuals with ADHD. They are prescribed to patients for daily use, and come in the form of tablets or capsules of varying dosages. Treatment of ADHD with stimulants, often in conjunction with psychotherapy, helps to improve ADHD symptoms along with the patient’s self-esteem, thinking ability, and social and family interactions.

A growing number of teenagers and young adults are abusing prescription stimulants to boost their study performance in an effort to improve their grades in school, and there is a widespread belief that these drugs can improve a person’s ability to learn (“cognitive enhancement”).

Prescription stimulants do promote wakefulness, but studies have found that they do not enhance learning or thinking ability when taken by people who do not actually have ADHD. Also, research has shown that students who abuse prescription stimulants actually have lower GPAs in high school and college than those who don’t. Because they suppress appetite, increase wakefulness, and increase focus and attention, they are frequently abused for purposes of weight loss or performance enhancement. Because they may produce euphoria, these drugs are also frequently abused for recreational purposes (i.e., to get high). Euphoria from stimulants is generally produced when pills are crushed and then snorted or mixed with water and injected.

All stimulants work by increasing dopamine levels in the brain – dopamine is a neurotransmitter associated with pleasure, movement, and attention. The therapeutic effect of stimulants is achieved by slow and steady increases of dopamine, which are similar to the way dopamine is naturally produced in the brain. The doses prescribed by physicians start low and increase gradually until a therapeutic effect is reached.

When taken in doses and via routes other than those prescribed, prescription stimulants can increase brain dopamine in a rapid and highly amplified manner (similar to other drugs of abuse such as methamphetamine), thereby disrupting normal communication between brain cells and producing euphoria and, as a result, increasing the risk of addiction.

Stimulants can increase blood pressure, heart rate, and body temperature and decrease sleep and appetite. When they are abused, they can lead to malnutrition and its consequences. Repeated abuse of stimulants can lead to feelings of hostility and paranoia. At high doses, they can lead to serious cardiovascular complications, including stroke.

This information and data indicate that we need to do a better job alerting all segments of society – including youth that misuse of prescription medication is extremely dangerous. Kids need to hear from parents that getting high on legal prescription drugs is just as dangerous as getting high on illegal street drugs. Keep kids safe – monitor all prescription medications closely and discuss the risks of non-medical use of prescription drugs with your children today.
