City council approves disposal of old brush truck

BY MICHAEL MILLER For Shaw Media SAVANNA — Savanna Mayor Pro Tem Pat Sanchez took the helm at the council’s brief Jan. 12 meeting via the Zoom web application.

The council approved an ordinance authorizing the disposal of municipal property, specifically a brush truck that the fire department is replacing.

Fire Chief Scott Wolfe said there are interested parties regarding the sale of the vehicle. He said there are four options open to the council regarding this disposal, including disposing through

a negotiated deal with the department head, advertising for bids, trading the vehicle in, or destroying it. Wolfe said he was hoping for the first option.

He said he’d had an offer of $5,000. Alderman Roger Husband said he felt that was “a pretty good price.”

The council approved a resolution to adopt a Carroll County multi jurisdictional natural hazards plan, after a motion by Husband, seconded

by Alderman Jeff Griswold, with the council expressing full approval.

Husband said his neighborhood could have

been plowed out a bit wider during the recent snowstorm, with Public Works Superintendent Lindeman responding that his current crew is somewhat “green” in terms of experience with snowfalls, and that he’d informed the individual to plow a bit wider in the future.

He also said he’d had several employees working over 20 hours straight and that one of the plow trucks had broken down during the storm.

Husband said he understood the difficulties and the important thing is that everyone learns from mistakes.

School board hears presentation on food service

BY MICHAEL MILLER For Shaw Media The West Carroll School Board heard a quick presentation from Shelley Falls, food service director, at the board’s Jan. 13 meeting which was presented online.

Falls told the board that the pandemic has made costs for food and other products “skyrocket” and that in light of this, the federal govern-

ment had provided aid.

Currently, all meals are free of charge and she said the district gets money for each student that eats a meal. This began last spring and continued into the summer.

Refunds from the federal government are based on how many students eat, she said.

“The more students we can get to eat, the more we receive in our funding,” she said.

Free rapid testing offered on Fridays during January

ROCK FALLS – The Whiteside County Community Health Clinic and Whiteside County Health Department, both at 1300 W. Second St., will offer free, no appointment necessary, rapid antigen testing from 8 a.m. to noon every Friday in January at their drive-thru while supplies last, as an extension of the Know Before You Go campaign.

The goal of this campaign is to help find as many positive cases before the weekend so we can intervene quickly and stop Coronavirus from spreading.

Antigen tests will be used to provide same day results. As part of this initiative, participants will be called with results by the end of the day they test. As antigen tests are not

as reliable for confirming someone is truly negative, notes will only be provided for individuals who test positive. As the test does not confirm a negative, notes will not be provided for negative results.

WCCHC and WCHD do not recommend retesting if someone has tested positive in the last 90 days.

Antigen tests can be used to slow the spread of COVID-19 by providing rapid results. However, these tests are not as sensitive as PCR tests and can produce a higher number of false negatives. Rapid antigens testing may not detect COVID-19 in positive individuals if they are asymptomatic or early in their infectious period.

From August to December, the district has served a total of 37,845 meals. Reimbursement rates for breakfasts will now be at $2.46 and lunches with lunches at $4.32, up from $2.38 and $4.15, respectively.

But she emphasized that all meals are free.

Board member Beverly Kilpatrick asked if there was something that could be done to get more kids to eat and Falls said that middle and high

school kids don’t want to eat, and often don’t eat anything at all.

“We’re still trying to come up with different ways,” Falls said.

The board also unanimously approved a resolution to adopt the Carroll County multi jurisdictional natural hazards plan, They also set the district’s high school graduation dates for Saturday, May 22 at 1 pm., at the high school.

COVID-19 UPDATE

National Guard will be activated to assist with vaccination clinics Illinois will advance to Phase 1b of its COVID19 vaccination plan on Jan. 25, Gov. JB Pritzker announced Friday at a news conference.

Illinois retail pharmacies and the National Guard will play a role in bringing the next phase of vaccinations online.

Health care workers and long-term care residents are eligible under Phase 1a and were the first priority group to receive the vaccine. With several communities “on track to be substantially completed next week” for Phase 1a, according to the governor’s office, Phase 1b is on track for Jan. 25.

Phase 1b includes front-line workers, first responders, teachers, grocery store employees, postal workers, day care workers and other essential workers.

“Starting this coming Tuesday, I have ordered the Illinois National Guard to activate our new flexible mobile teams to assist local health departments by expanding their existing vaccination clinics,” Pritzker said.

The state also will launch a vaccination website before Jan. 25 with information about where and how to get vaccinated.

“Patience will be required in these first weeks of Phase 1b because vaccine supplies are just extremely limited,” Pritzker said.

As of Friday afternoon, the state has received 995,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccines and has administered 447,348 doses. According to public health department data, 101,670 residents, 0.82% of the state’s population, are fully vaccinated, meaning they have received both doses of their vaccine.

All of this is against the backdrop of Friday’s confirmation that the Chicago has the state’s

first confirmed COVID-19 case of the variant first seen in the United Kingdom. This variant, also called B.1.1.7., is more transmissible than other variants of the coronavirus, which means it can spread more easily.

“This news isn’t surprising and doesn’t change our guidance around COVID-19. We must double down on the recommended safety strategies we know help stop the spread of this virus,” said Dr. Allison Arwady, Chicago Department of Public Health commissioner. “In order to protect Chicago, please continue to wear a mask, practice social distancing, wash your hands often, do not have outside guests in your home and get vaccinated when it is your turn.”

Cougars feeling the power in the weight room Powerlifting club forms for Eastland High School athletes

BY BRIAN WEIDMAN bweidman@shawmedia.com Eastland senior Cadin Colehour is a three-sport athlete (football, wrestling and track) who does what he can to keep himself in shape yearround.

After his sophomore year of football, however, his level of fitness went up a notch when he added powerlifting to his routine. That sport combines the squat, bench press and deadlift, and is a passion for the eight members of the Eastland Powerlifting team.

They gather on Sunday nights from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Eastland High School weight room to work on the squat and bench press, then again on Wednesday nights for the deadlift.

“I came in here during one of my offseasons, started training and just fell in love with it,” Colehour said.

“As soon they offered a club, I was very intrigued.”

That club once only had one member, former Eastland standout Eli Dertz, an elite powerlifter who is now playing football at Loras College in Dubuque. Dertz was joined by another Eastland student, Kaylee Hammer, and the pair regularly posted impressive numbers and set records at powerlifting meets.

Their legacy is being carried on by a new group of Eastland students, and it’s Dertz’s father, Chris, leading the way.

Chris now passes on that knowledge to current Cougars.

The Eastland powerlifters have access to about four competitions in this area, mostly in the Chicago suburbs, though some do it not necessarily to compete, but because they enjoy the challenge of seeing themselves improve. Another obvious benefit is that it makes athletes better in other sports.

“I’m a PE teacher here too, and I’m a big believer in strength,” Dertz said. “If you’re strong, you’re going

to run fast. You’re going to jump high. You’re going to start and stop.

You’re going to change directions efficiently. You’re going to physically dominate an opponent. You’re going to to stay healthy. You’re going to resist and overcome injury a lot better.

“As far as being a PE teacher, a powerlifting coach, a sports coach, strength is the foundation on which everything is built. Everything that you do as a powerlifter, it’s going to translate to sports as well.”

Colehour is hoping to put that to the test soon. He will play either left tackle or right guard on offense and end on defense for the Eastland football team this season, assuming

there is a season at some point.

With a top dead lift of 540 pounds, a top bench press of 370 pounds and a top squat of 500 pounds, the 208pound Colehour is confident he can handle himself in the trenches for the Wildcatz.

“I tend to not have a problem, as far as brute strength goes, which makes it a lot easier to just focus on technique with all of my sports,” Colehour said. “I tend to recover a bit faster because my muscles are used to so much more effort and exertion. It is tremendous for sports.

I run faster. I jump higher. I’m way better overall.”

Colehour has parlayed his powerlifting prowess into a college scholarship. McKendree University, a Division II school in downstate Lebanon, has a powerlifting team. The school had shown interest in Eli Dertz a year ago, and as Colehour began to impress in competitions as well, McKendree also pursued Colehour. He plans to major in exercise science, with a goal of becoming a physical therapist.

“I went down there, took a visit, and me and the coach, we hit it off,” Colehour said. “I liked the program and I loved the school. It has everything I could want. As I got better and better, we figured it out, as far as scholarship money and financial aid. They gave me everything I could ask for.”

Powerlifting is a family affair for Colehour. He is joined in the room by his younger sister Natalie, a freshman. She plans to play compete in softball and track for the Wildcatz.

“I thought it was cool to be like my brother,” Natalie said, “but I’ve always liked lifting weights and being strong.”

The Eastland Powerlifting team currently has eight members:

seniors Cadin Colehour and Bishop Groezinger; junior Paul Sturtevant; sophomore Cody Cole; and freshmen Chase Bremmer, Natalie Colehour, Aby Rausch and Abbie Penticoff.

Cole competes in the same three sports as Cadin Colehour, and has noticed a big jump in performance since he began powerlifting.

“It makes you faster and able to jump higher,” Cole said. “Last year, my vertical was 29 inches, and [Wednesday] I PRed with 33.5.

I’ve gotten so much stronger and so much more athletic. I’ve been able to run faster and jump higher, and it’s made me so much better of an athlete.”

An added benefit to powerlifting is in mental health. It has proven to be a tremendous stress reliever.

“Any pent up anger or emotions that you’ve got, you can come in and let it out on the bar,” Cole said.

“It helps with that immensely. The day you want to just punch someone in the face, you can take it out on the weight. That’s one of my main things. It helps me out mentally.”

“If you have a hard day or a stressful week, you get in the gym and everything else just goes away,” Cadin Colehour said. “It’s just you and the weights. That’s the most important part for me – it’s an escape from everything, being in the gym.”

Prescott owns five bars and restaurants in the Sauk Valley, including the Candlelight Inn in both Sterling and Rock Falls, and Palmyra Pub & Eatery in Dixon.

Thanks to dropping COVID-19 positivity rates, Gov. JB Pritzker and the Illinois Department of Public Health Monday lowered mitigation standards from Tier 2 to Tier 1 in Region 1, which includes Whiteside, Lee, Ogle, Carroll, Boone, DeKalb, Jo Daviess and Stephenson counties.

As a result, bars and restaurants can return to indoor service, and have either 25 customers or up to 25% capacity, effective immediately.

Prescott plans to reopen the Candlelight Inns and Palmyra Pub on Monday, Jan. 25. While he’s happy to reopen his businesses, that wasn’t necessarily his biggest reason for joy: He’s happy there

no longer will be a stigma against places that bucked the rules and remained open.

“It’s like Christmas in January,” Prescott said.

“My biggest win here is hopefully people stop looking at other people and treating them like they’re criminals for having their business open.

They made a choice. Right now, people look at them like they’re a criminal because you’re not supposed to have people in your building. At least now, having people in your building isn’t a crime, so they’ll stop looking at these other people that have to open.

That’s their choice, and don’t treat them like a criminal.

“I made a decision to close. Other people make different decisions, because that’s what was best for their family and their team and their business.

I’m really grateful that we’re not going to look at these other people now and say, ‘Oh, you’re a bad person.’ That’s a huge win for everybody in our industry.”

Linda Durham, owner of Alley Loop Saloon and Deli in Dixon, said dropping from Tier 2 to Tier 1

hopefully will end some confusion for her customers. After all, it was only Friday when the region went from Tier 3 to Tier 2.

“I’m very excited about moving back to Tier 1,” Durham said. “It’s also easier, because with Tier 2, they could come in and gamble, but they weren’t supposed to sit and eat. It was real confusing and hard to explain to the customers. ... It’s going to be a lot less stress for the owners.”

Monday afternoon, the grill at Alley Loop was fired up, and several customers sat at the bar and enjoyed a meal. Durham is hopeful her regulars and others will get in the habit of coming back in, although it will take some time.

“Usually what would happen is people come in, they’ll sit down, they’ll order the sandwich, maybe have a beer, then they’re leaving and taking it with them,” Durham said. “Now we don’t have to explain. We don’t have to worry. Honestly, it hasn’t been very busy, because people are leery about coming back. It hasn’t been packed with people. It’s been slow, but it’s good. Any business is good.”

OBITUARIES MERLE KENNEDY MT.CARROLL — Merle Kennedy, 92, moved peacefully from her earthly home at Allure of Mt. Carroll to her heavenly home on January 15, 2021.

Inurnment will take place on a later date, at Maplewood Cemetery, in New Lenox. Family and friends are invited to share in Merle’s life at www.lawjonesfuneralhome.com.

Merle was born Feb. 13, 1928, in Chicago, to Joseph and Florence (Noble) Kennedy. Merle grew up and attended school in the Chicago area, then worked as a nurse aide and did clerical work for 10 years.

She moved from Joliet to Lanark in 2004. While living at Allure, Merle especially enjoyed The Country Store, BINGO and any musical program.

Merle is preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Florence, and son Daniel, seven siblings, and a daughter-in-law, Linda Clausen.

Regions 1, 2, and 5 are moving into Tier 2 on Friday. Region 1 consists of northwestern Illinois, including DeKalb, Lee, Ogle and Whiteside counties. Region 2 includes counties such as La Salle, Kendall and Bureau.

Region 5 consists of far southern Illinois.

“Even though a young person might survive the pandemic better than an older person, a young person can carry the disease to older people that he or she lives with,” Pritzker said Friday.

“We want to be careful and avoid more community spread.

“Regions moving to lower tiers, in those lower tiers there are youth sports and recreational sports for adults that are opening up. That’s a good beginning. I would like to see the [COVID-19 case] numbers continue falling.”

Pritzker said it’s up to residents throughout the state, but specifically

in each of the state’s 11 health regions, to continue following COVID-19 mitigation efforts.

The IHSA in a statement said lowrisk winter sports can begin practice immediately within their geographic region and will begin competition within their geographic region on a future date to be determined by the IHSA Board. Spring and summer sports in regions under Tier 2 mitigation can begin contact days Jan. 25. All IHSA activities remain on pause in regions that are under Tier 3 or Tier 4 mitigations, which includes the majority of the state.

The IHSA’s low-risk winter sports include badminton, boys swimming and diving, cheerleading, dance, boys and girls bowling, and girls gymnastics. There are no medium-risk IHSA sports in the winter, while boys and girls basketball are the lone high-risk winter sports.

Coatney, Henze named to SVM all-area team Illinois Farm Bureau (IFB) members, spouses and children are eligible to apply for 78 college scholarships offered by the IAA Foundation, Illinois Farm Bureau’s charitable arm.

The scholarships, ranging from $1,000 to $7,500, will be awarded in total of $124,000 for the 2021-22 school year.

Students may apply for a variety of scholarships, including three IAA Foundation Top Scholarships, where winners will each receive $5,000 awards. Another $7,500 award goes to the Illinois Farm Bureau Legacy of Leadership scholarship winner.

In addition to family scholarships often established to honor the memory of a loved one, the IAA Foundation offers scholarships on behalf of organizations such as Prairie Farms Dairy. For 2021, the IAA Foundation is honored to administer the newly created Sara C. Andrews Memorial Scholarship and the H.R. Beeson Scholarship.

All applicants must be current high school seniors accepted for enrollment, or students already enrolled, at an accredited college, or university. Scholarships are awarded for exceptional academics, leadership experiences and community involvement. Previous winners of an IAA Foundation scholarship are eligible to apply again if the scholarship allows.

In 1900, brothers Fred and Teed Hermann started Hermann Funeral Parlor in connection with the furniture store next to the General Store owned by their brother Charles Hermann. In 1920, Fred's son-inlaw, Charles Vanderheyden entered into partnership with the Hermann's. Charles Hermann's son, Clyde began serving his apprenticeship in embalming. A few years later, he also attended Worsham and received his license in 1929. In 1935, the Hermann Funeral Home moved to a large residence on Main St. built by M.K. Hammond. The residence was remolded into a first rate funeral home, and opened for business in 1936. In 1948, Stockton's Christ Lutheran Church had built a new larger church. Clyde bought the previous church and parsonage located at 249 N. Park St., where it still is today.

Clyde's son, Richard joined the family business after graduating Worsham in 1957. Richard's son William (Bill) graduated Worsham College of Mortuary Science in 1983. Bill took over as owner of Hermann Funeral Home in 1990. In 1991, he expanded the business by purchasing the Scharman Funeral Home in Shannon, IL from Jim Scharman when he retired after celebrating 100 years in business. Bill expanded further in 1994 by building a third location in Pearl City, IL. Bill, Justina, and Julia plan to carry on their long lived legacy of service, carrying forward the same dignity and compassion as the generations before them.
