POLICE NEWS Three Savanna men arrested SAVANNA – Three Savanna residents were arrested on drug charges after the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant in the 1100 block of Chicago Avenue in Savanna on Feb. 3.

Arrested were: Scott A. Kessler, 51, of Savanna, violation of the controlled subtance act (Class 4 felony)

and violation of the methamphetamine control act (Class 1 felony); Gary L. Arnold, 43, of Savanna, unlawful possession of methamphetamine, 0-5 grams (Class 3 felony); Dirk J. Legal, 45, of Savanna, unlawful possession of methamphetamine, 0-5 grams, Class 3 felony. All three appeared in court on Feb. 4 and were held in lieu of bond.

According to court records, also indicted Feb. 20, 2020, in the conspiracy were: • Kevin Mezera, 48, of Savanna, charged with conspiracy to deliver more than 100 but less than 400 grams and more than 15 but less than 100 grams of meth, delivery of and possession of less than 5 grams of meth, and three counts each of delivery of and possession of more than 5 but less than 15 grams of meth.

He was sentenced Jan. 28, 2021 to 3 years on one count of delivering 5-15 grams; the rest of the charges were dismissed.

• Shawn Mernack, 30, of Hanover, formerly of Savanna, charged with conspiracy to deliver more than 100

but less than 400 grams and more than 15 but less than 100 grams of meth, and two counts each of delivery of and possession of more than 5 but less than 15 grams of meth.

He was sentenced April 22 on one of the possession charges; the rest were dismissed.

• Adrianne Zito, 37, of Hanover, charged Jan 10, 2020, with possession

in Shannon and then became a substitute teacher for decades after starting a family.

When she married Elmer, all her students that year attended her wedding. She used to brag that she had taught everything, even boys P.E. Elmer and Judy married on January 24, 1959 in Chadwick at Hope Church. They celebrated 53 years of marriage before Elmer’s passing in 2012. Judy was a devoted, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She enjoyed watching basketball, especially when her grandsons played, and Rachel cheered. She attended all events that her grandchildren were in, taking great pride in their many accomplishments.

She loved to cook and make family members their favorites. Everything was homemade with love. She gardened and canned for decades. Always making her favorite pickle beets. She made Barbie clothes for her daughter and granddaughter, taking pride in her unique creations.

Judy was a member of the Carroll Co. Chadwick Lamplighters Extension HCE unit

for over 50 years. She served as county HCE secretary/treasurer for over 40 years. She worked tirelessly beside her husband and in 1972, Judy and Elmer proudly received the State Outstanding Young Farmer Award. She was a member of the Chadwick Women’s Club, Carroll Co. 4 C’s, Carroll Co. Livestock Feeders Women’s group, and worked as a voting judge for several years.

Her favorite activity was morning coffee group with her friends. The group started in Chadwick and then moved to Lanark when it closed. These ladies were some of her most treasured friends. She liked being social and even though she had a dry sense of humor, was quite funny.

Judy enjoyed taking her JD Gator for rides, using it to clean up roadways, pick up the yard, deliver lunch to the fields and even go to church or coffee with it when Elmer took her car. When they were able Elmer and Judy liked to travel, especially going out west and up into Canada. When the children were younger many trips were taken by RV. GALENA – A Savanna man sentenced Feb. 7 in Jo Daviess County court to four and a half years for possession of methamphetamine is among at least five people indicted and sentenced in a 2020 methamphetamine-dealing conspiracy.

Devon Brashaw, 35, will serve that sentence after he serves 10 years levied in Carroll County two years ago, also for possession of meth, Jo Daviess State’s Attorney Christopher Allendorf said in a news release.

Brashaw was indicted Feb. 20, 2020, on conspiracy to deliver more than 100 but less than 400 grams and more than 15 but less that 100 grams of meth.

He pleaded guilty to an amended charge of possession of less than 15 grams.

He was given credit for 622 days served.

Brashaw was charged May 1, 2020, in Carroll County with possession of a controlled substance, possession of

of less than 5 grams of meth and possession of drug paraphernalia, then indicted on conspiracy to deliver more than 100 but less than 400 grams and more than 15 but less than 100 grams of meth, and delivery of and possession of more than 5 but less than 15 grams of meth.

• Anthony Zito, 35, of Danville formerly of Hanover, charged Dec. 18, 2019 with possession of less than 5 grams of meth and possession of drug paraphernalia, then indicted on conspiracy to deliver more than 100 but less than 400 grams and more than 15 but less than 100 grams of meth.

He was sentenced March 31 to 7 years on the amended charge of delivery of more than 5 but less than 15 grams of meth. All other charges were dismissed.

“This is the first time we have tried the Saturday afternoon schedule,” said Robert Whipple, the symphony’s executive director. “Our audiences and musicians are drawn from a wide area of eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois, and due to unpredictable winter weather and early darkness, we are hoping the Saturday afternoon will be

Students are admitted free for the orchestra’s concerts. Adult tickets are $20. An adult with a student is admitted for half price. The concert is included in the symphony’s annual season ticket. Individual adult concert tickets will be available at the door.

AMBOY – Ever since a two-point loss to Amboy in Lanark on Jan. 19, the Eastland girls basketball team has had redemption on its mind.

With a resounding 49-27 victory Feb. 10 at Amboy High School, the Cougars avenged the earlier 41-39 loss, while also securing the 2021-22 NUIC South title with an 11-1 conference record.

“It feels pretty good. They got us by two at our place. We didn’t think that we played very well, and so the girls wanted to come in and make sure that they put their stamp on things,” Eastland coach Nicole Brinker said. “We had to go through some tough games with Polo. They played exceptionally well. Fulton played us well the other night, so conference champs is pretty cool because it’s a test of over time and the long 12 games that you have. The fact that we played consistently and won those games throughout, and then to seal it on the last night of conference, it’s pretty sweet.”

Quinc Haverland put back a Burkholder miss with 7:09 to go, and Eastland took a 33-16 lead. With 1:47 to play, Sweitzer assisted Myre on another 3, building the lead to 36-18.

The Cougars stretched the lead to 20 points at 38-18 about 30 seconds later with a Sweitzer layup, assisted by Myre, but Jones put back a missed shot to cut the Amboy deficit to 38-20 just before the end of the third.

Maeve Larson offered a brief glimmer of hope for the Clippers at the start of the fourth quarter with a putback layup, cutting the margin to 38-22, but the spark was quickly extinguished.

“Again, Addie Burkholder deserves a lot of the credit. She contained Dinges, which is a huge deal. And then Chloe Sweitzer and Paige Joiner did a good job on their little point guard,” Brinker said. “Again, keeping them out of the lane, making sure that we were doing whatever. Keeping them in front of us and then securing the rebound. That’s the biggest thing is to make sure you limit them to one shot, and the kids did that excep-

Midway through the fourth quarter, Burkholder sank a pair of free throws to restore the 20-point lead at 42-22. In the final minuteand-a-half, the Cougars increased their lead to as many as 23 points.

The Clippers, conversely, were limited to just 11 points in the second half.

“Our communication really picked up, and our intensity and our drive,” Burkholder said of the second-half defensive effort. “We knew what we had to do, and I think we pulled through.”

Amboy seemed to miss short shots all game, and it was never able to string together a big run. That was the biggest difference in their lopsided loss.

“First of all, Eastland played a great game.

I don’t know what their percentage was, but they shot the ball very well. They certainly executed better than us,” Amboy coach Mike McCracken said. “We just got out of sync, and we couldn’t do things. We thought we were getting fouled some of the time, and we weren’t getting a call. At the end of the day, we just didn’t score. And we just didn’t do too much right. Picked a bad game to play that poorly, but give them credit, they outplayed us today.”

Burkholder finished the night with 15 points and seven rebounds to lead Eastland.

Myre hit three 3-pointers and scored 11 points.

Jones led the way for Amboy with nine points, three rebounds and two steals, while Dinges chipped in seven points and four rebounds.

Polo/Eastland’s Doty headed to wrestling state finals

treynolds@shawmedia.com PRINCETON – When it comes down to the final few steps of the postseason, it’s survive and advance. For four local wrestlers, they did just that at Saturday’s Class 1A Princeton Sectional, and achieved their season-long goal of qualifying for the IHSA state tournament.

Polo’s Wyatt Doty placed second, teammate Daniel Engel took third, and Oregon teammates Lane Halverson and Seth Stevens both finished fourth to earn trips to State Farm Center in Champaign next weekend.

Doty was runner-up at 126 pounds.

He defeated Princeton’s Matt Harris 9-2 in the semifinals, but fell to Dakota’s Phoenix Blakely via pin in 3:42 in the title bout.

“I just attacked,” said Doty, who ate granola bars and drank Pedialyte to stay fueled up between matches.

“Wrestling Matt, I knew he goes for big moves, so I was kind of distant in the semifinal. Then Blakely, he’s pretty good, he beat me last week. He kind of knew what I was doing because I took in his leg last time, and he kind of

blocked that by going 2-on-1 on my arm and doing shucks.”

Doty said he’ll be ready for state after he gets in some more work this week.

“I’ve got to do a lot of stuff this week, watch some film, know what I’m doing wrong and what I’m doing right, and hopefully I place next week,” he said.

Engel took third at 285, locking up in an exciting third-place bout with Erie-Prophetstown’s Elijah Friedrichsen. The final match of the day, it was scoreless until Engel scored a takedown with 38 seconds left.

After Friedrichsen escaped right away to make it 2-1 with 35 seconds to go, Engel scored another takedown and got a pair of back points in the final three seconds for a 6-1 decision in the battle of senior heavyweights.

“He pushed me into the table, and I got a little upset. I just came back strong,” said Engel, who won a 7-2 decision over Plano’s Alex Diaz in the consolation semifinal to earn his state berth. “I just went out to try and take people down, just used patience waiting for them to act first so I can react to what they’re doing.”

Oregon’s Halverson and Stevens both dropped third-place matches in back-to-back weight classes at 132 and 138.

Halverson earned his trip to state with a 9-7 overtime win over Newman’s Daniel Kelly in the blood round with one final takedown after the two wrestled to a 7-7 tie through six minutes.

And even after a 10-2 loss to Woodstock Marian’s Vance Williams in the third-place bout, Halverson credited his mental approach as the key for fighting through wrestlebacks.

“Honestly, it was just being patient and not rushing all the positions and getting worked up,” he said. “I kept my mind straight and focused on one match at a time.”

Stevens also said it was mental fortitude that helped him fight through some jitters. He lost 9-2 to Dakota’s Maddux Blakely in the third-place bout, but earned his spot in Champaign with an earlier pin of Sherrard’s Austin Fratzke in 5:59 in the blood round.

“I wanted to be aggressive, but I kind of walked out there nervous,”

Stevens said. “It was pretty much just my practice partners giving me good competition in the room, and my coaches pushing me, that helped me through it and get to this point.”

“I was just confident in my offense.

I know if I keep on my offense instead of just defending, if I keep going, I’m more than likely going to win,” said White, who’s already hungry for more.

“I would say it’s already sunk in now that I’m a sectional champion, but this is just part of the journey. I’m striving for that state title. That’s what I want, and this is just part of the road to get there.”

Eastland, Polo, Fulton girls roll to regional quarterfinal wins The Eastland girls basketball team downed Sterling Newman 59-26 in its regional opener on Saturday.

Chloe Sweitzer led Eastland with 10 points followed by Delana Erbsen with eight, Sarah Kempel with seven, and Addison Burkholder and Audrey Sundquist with six each.

The Cougars and Morrison were scheduled to play on Tuesday. The regional championship is Thursday, Feb. 17 at 7 p.m.

Polo 59, Hiawatha 17: Polo also won its regional opener on Saturday at home, defeating Hiawatha 59-17 to advance to the 1A Indian Creek Regional semifinals on Tuesday in Shabbona.

The Marcos led 38-11 by halftime and cruised from there. Nicole Boelens had 12 points, three rebounds, four steals and two assists for Polo, while Kadence Sheaffer, Courtney Grobe and Lindee Poper pitched in nine points each. Sheaffer added seven steals, five assists and three rebounds, and Poper finished with three rebounds and two blocks. Natalie Nelson added eight points, four rebounds and two steals for the Marcos, who will take on regional host Indian Creek at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Oregon 42, Riverdale 35: The Hawks trailed by six points at halftime, but rallied with a 27-14 run in the second half to top the Rams in a regional quarterfinal in Port Byron.

Hadley Lutz led the way for Oregon with 18 points, while Mariah Drake scored eight points and Liz Mois added seven points. Mya Engelkes chipped in six points for the Hawks, who will play top-seeded Winnebago at 6 p.m. Tuesday in a 2A Oregon Regional semifinal at the Blackhawk Center.

Fulton 44, Milledgeville 36: Kylie Smither poured in 19 points to lead the Steamers past the Missiles on Stan Borgman Court.

Miraya Pessman added seven points for Fulton, which led 13-11 after the first quarter, then trailed 23-22 at halftime before taking a 32-30 lead into the final period. The Steamers will face Galena in a 1A Eastland Regional semifinal at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Lanark.
