FHN opens registration for Feb. vaccination clinic FREEPORT– FHN will offer free adult Moderna COVID-19 vaccination clinics through May at 1763 S. Dirck Drive in Freeport.

Clinic dates are Friday, Feb. 11; Friday, March 11; Friday, April 8; and Friday, May 6.

Individuals can sign up online for vaccinations or booster vaccinations.

Registration is open for the Friday, Feb. 11, clinic.

“These clinics are free and open to any adult,” FHN President and CEO Mark Gridley said. “If you haven’t been vaccinated, sign up to get your first and second shot. If you have received your first vaccination doses (or single Johnson and Johnson dose) and just need a booster, you can sign up for that on the same page – www. fhn.org/vaccination-signup-february. asp. The following month’s registration will open up after the current month’s clinic date has passed.”

Booster shot recipients must bring their COVID-19 immunization card with them to their appointment.

Patients should plan to stay for 15 minutes after receiving the vaccination (30 minutes for people who have had immediate reactions to vaccinations such as flu shots or regularly need to carry an EpiPen).

There is no cost for COVID-19 vaccinations.

FHN also is offering free SHIELD saliva-based COVID-19 testing in Freeport. Developed by the University of Illinois, the SHIELD test bypasses the RNA extraction step that is part of most tests. This speeds up the test process, reduces the cost and avoids supply chain challenges.

The process requires individuals to simply deposit a small amount of saliva in a vial, which usually takes less than five minutes.

Testing is free and open to the public and will be offered via appointments from 7 to 11 a.m. Mondays and 2 to 5:30 p.m. Thursdays at FHN’s COVID-19 vaccination site, 1763 S. Dirck Drive in Freeport.

In order to get tested, individuals should create an account on the SHIELD Illinois portal at portal.shieldillinois.com and schedule their test appointment. Use df5brbrj for the Agency Code. Individuals can call 217265-6059 for help setting up an account, creating appointments and accessing results.

People must present an ID and the QR code provided when the appointment was scheduled and should not eat, drink or put anything in their mouth for an hour before taking the test. That includes smoking, drinking, chewing gum and using mouthwash.

Results are available within 72 hours and will be posted in the SHIELD patient portal after the lab results are completed. FHN will not be made aware of nor have access to your results. Please refer to the SHIELD portal for your results.

By law, positive test results are reported to the relevant public health department(s) for contact tracing.

Rock Island’s former chief of police is Whiteside County’s new chief deputy.

Jeffrey VenHuizen, a rural Erie native and Rock Island’s top cop for the past eight years until retiring Oct. 31, will replace Ron Pothoff, who was serving as interim deputy chief for the past year.

As Sheriff John Booker’s second-in-command, VenHuizen will oversee the day-to-day operations of the department, including the jail.

“To say I am excited to have Jeffrey VenHuizen join the Whiteside

County Sheriff’s Office is an understatement,” Booker said in a news release announcing the hire.

VenHuizen has 28 years’ experience, all with the 110-employee Rock Island Police Department. He was a patrol officer, K-9 and training officer and worked vice and narcotics while working his way up the ladder to deputy chief and then chief. He is the former president of Quad Cities Chiefs of Police and the 2019 Rock Island Citizen of the Year.

Pothoff, who retired as Sterling’s chief of police in January 2016 before joining the sheriff’s department shortly thereafter, is returning to his court security role, Booker said.

ttaylor@shawmedia.com The economic impact of airports in Rock Falls and Dixon is a combined $18.6 million, according to a study the Illinois Department of Transportation released recently.

Whiteside County Airport-Joseph H. Bittorf Field near Rock Falls contributes $13 million to the economy and Dixon Municipal-Charles R. Walgreen Field adds $5.6 million, according to the study.

Other general-use airports in the Sauk Valley region also contribute: $17.1 million from Rochelle Municipal Airport and $661,000 from Tri-Township Airport in Savanna.

The information comes from the 2020 Illinois Aviation Economic Impact Analysis Report, which IDOT made public. Information for the report was compiled in 2019.

Kris Noble, executive director of the Sauk Valley Area Chamber of Commerce, said being a rural community with an airport “puts our area at an advantage. .... It keeps us competitive with other parts of rural America.”

Some of that comes from companies with regional or national reach being able to provide air service for executives, she said.

From a tourism standpoint, Noble said events such as the mid-summer airshow held at Whiteside County Airport have served to draw people to the community.

Gary Camarano, executive director of Whiteside County Economic Development, said an example of such an advantage came when Metform, a machining and parts component maker in Savanna, was able to fill a special order requiring parts be delivered quickly to a BMW plant in South Carolina by flying it out of Whiteside.

“That airport has a longer runway than Midway,” he said. “One of the longest runways in Illinois. Air Force One has landed there. It’s an

Camarano said people involved in the airport have been working at getting more out of the airport.

“It’s all coming together,” he said. “The board that’s been assembled over the last few years is taking a real serious interest in increasing activity at the airport.”

There have been grants recently awarded for improvements. Camarano said a new hangar has been considered to boost airport-related businesses.

All told, Illinois airports contributed a combined $99.5 billion and more than 490,000 jobs, the report found.

“Aviation is a pillar of our state. Its importance to our economy cannot be overstated,” Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman said in a news release. He said airports serve as the gateway to the economy.

The report’s economic impact figure for general-use airfields reflects data from five areas: airport manage-

ment and administration, visitor spending, airport employees, labor income and the productivity of aviation-related businesses.

The larger commercial airports also add cargo income to that figure.

Whiteside County Airport, which is owned and operated by the county government, supports recreational flights, aerial inspection, law enforcement and agriculture.

Whiteside has 18 employees and contributes $3.5 million in labor income. General aviation activity accounts for $9.9 million, visitors spend $3.1 million and the productivity of aviation businesses is $5.7 million.

Dixon Municipal, which is owned and operated by the city, supports corporate and business flights, aerial inspection, photography and law enforcement operations.

Dixon Municipal has 54 employees, producing $1.7 million in labor income. Airport activity is worth $1.1 million, visitors there spend

about $4.5 million and aviation-related business is worth $2.8 million.

Rochelle Municipal is responsible for 101 jobs and $5.4 million in labor income.

Airport management is worth $16.6 million, sees $434,000 in visitor spending and does $9.6 million in aviation business.

Tri-Township, the gateway to Mississippi Palisades State Park, has six employees for $253,000 in income. Airport management is valued at $574,000, visitor spending is worth $87,000 and aviation business is $368,000.

The report also looked at route maps of the airports.

Whiteside destinations are in Illinois and neighboring states. But there are flights to California, Texas, Florida, North Carolina and Massachusetts, too.

Likewise, Dixon serves Illinois and neighboring states.

Destinations also include Nebraska, Minnesota, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia and Arkansas.

rado in the west, Minnesota and South Dakota, Massachusetts, Virginia and Florida, as well as other southern states.

Tri-Township’s destinations include New York and Colorado, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and North Carolina.

The four Sauk Valley airports are part of IDOT’s Region 2, which is mostly northern counties not including Cook County and the collar counties. Chicago Rockford International Airport and Quad City International Airport are the largest commercial service airports in the region. Region 2 has an economic impact of $8.1 billion, with cargo accounting for $3 billion.

Statewide, aviation accounts are $21.1 billion from visitor spending, $35.9 billion related to the shipment of cargo and $38.4 billion from direct impacts, including $32.5 billion in income to help support 492,768 jobs.

The report analyzed 85 public-use airport facilities – 81 public and four private airports.

Thus, popcorn growers dry the kernels until they reach an optimal moisture level, which allows the popcorn to expand the most.

PEARL CITY – The Pearl City FFA Pork Chop Dinner is scheduled for 5 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 11.

The dinner will be at the Pearl City High School cafeteria. Tickets can be purchased from members of the Pearl City FFA or at the door.

The dinner will include a pork chop sandwich, chips, cookie and drink for $8.

The Pearl City FFA and FFA Alumni hosts the dinner along with a silent auc-

tion to raise funds to benefit the Pearl City FFA. The funds will be used to help students attend leadership trainings, camps, state and national conventions, as well as judging competitions and contests.

MORRISON – An 80-year-old resident at Resthave Care and Rehabilitation has made her first snow angels of 2022.

Sondra Horn completed her artistic feats after the recent snowfall.

“This spirited, fun-loving, spry and agile 80-year-old resides at Resthave Care and Rehabilitation in the assisted living wing,” Marketing Director Karla Burn said. “Sondra has made a snow angel every year for as long as she can remember. Staff love this annual tradition and will often make one with her.”

Burn said Horn offers her expertise to those who want to create a snow angel.

“She gives great instructions to staff to make sure their snow angels come out looking good. Before Sondra makes her angel, she will often tell her friends at Resthave she is going out to do it and many of them show up to watch from their windows,” Burn said. “They are always impressed by Sondra’s ability to get up and down so easily but they usually don’t brave the cold to try and join her.”

With some slight modifications, you can still grow many of the same vegetables you and your family enjoy but in a smaller growing system. This class will cover the basics of growing vegetables, herbs and fruits in containers to prepare you for the 2022 growing season.

Growing and Preserving Herbs: To finish the event, Bruce Black, Extension horticulture educator, will talk about how herbs are great fun to grow in the home landscape – and they are easy to grow, harvest and keep. Black will discuss how to learn more about harvesting and preserving your home-grown herbs to enjoy in recipes all winter.

This is the 24th offering of Joys of Gardening, which is sponsored by the

University of Illinois Extension and the Master Gardener Program.

In an effort to offer in-person programming, the event has been modified to keep participants safe while attending. Masks are required to be worn at all times. Participants will be socially distanced. Hand sanitizing stations will be available. No food or drink will be served.

She worked at the local drug store and then later took a job as a cashier with the power company. On October 20, 1950, she married the love of her life, Boyce Humphreys. They raised five children and were longtime residents of Lanark, IL.

He was a 1976 graduate of Lanark High School. He married Sherrie Speer on August 25, 1979 in Mt. Carroll. He was retired from the Mt. Carroll Fire Department.

Survivors include his spouse - Sherrie Vietmeyer of Mt. Carroll, son - Christopher (Amanda) Vietmeyer, daughter - Courtney Vietmeyer, granddaughter - Jayden Vietmeyer, grandson – Hunter Vietmeyer, brothers: Kevin Vietmeyer and Curt Vietmeyer; and nieces and nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a son – Patrick Vietmeyer.

DOROTHY WUBBENA Born: April 3, 1924 in Shannon, IL Died: January 16, 2022 in Lena, IL Dorothy Wubbena, age 97, of Shannon, IL passed away Sunday, January 16, 2022 at Lena Living Center.

She was born in Shannon on April 3, 1924 to the late Roland and VerDena (Daniels) Artman. Dorothy married Robert Wubbena on September 27, 1946. Bob passed away on October 20, 2007.

Dorothy graduated from Shannon High School in 1942. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. She served as a 4-H Leader for several years and worked in the office for the Carroll County Fair for numerous years.

Dorothy enjoyed ceramics, sewing, gardening, fishing with her husband, attending sporting events and spending time with her

family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren, she was so proud of all their accomplishments. She loved hosting Holiday family gatherings and looked forward to watching the grandkids and great grandkids play football in the backyard.

She is survived by her son, Wayne (Sandy) Wubbena of Warren; her daughter, Darlene (Doug) Pauley of Winslow; her six grandchildren, Becky (Ryan) Guentner, Krista (Brett) Fry, Wendy (Shawn) Bean, Scott (James Waite) Wubbena, Jody (Ryan) Indergand, and Mark (Cynthia) Pauley; her 12 great grandchildren, Olivia, Jack, Breyton, Sadie, Brynn, Sawyer, Payton, Kayla, Drew, Kiera, Brady and Miles; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her son, Darold Wubbena; and her sister, Florence Thede.

Naoma worked at Elkay Manufacturing and then later worked at Rolling Hills.

Naoma and Boyce enjoyed traveling, often to visit with children and their families.

Grandchildren have memories of picnics, hiking, camping, eating out, family reunions, and spending time at Grandma’s in the summer. Naoma played piano for church and taught Sunday school for many years.

She was known for her embellished floral applique jeans and wearing pearls for any and all occasions. Naoma loved ice cream and was always ready to “eat dessert first”. She will be remembered for her positive attitude, encouragement, and generosity.

Naoma is survived by her two sons, David (Suzi) Humphreys of Carlinville, IL, and Scott (Mary Ellen) Humphreys of Western Springs, IL; three daughters, Helen (Chuck) Coggins of Plainview, MN, Nelda (Bruce) Meador of Waukon, IA, and Lauretta (Mike) Boyer of Lanark, IL; 14 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

She seemed the right path to take. She graduated worked as an RN, in Clinton, IA, CGH Medical Center in Sterling on the Pediatrics floor, and as a Registered Nurse in 1945. Dotty was a was a surgical nurse. She loved surgery. Her daughters and grandchildren inherited her talent for music such as singing, playing instruments, piano and organ.

Dotty turned 100 years old on December 10, 2021. Her latest great grandchildren, twin boys, were born 99 years and 11 months after her on November 10, 2021. She does have one more great grandchild on the way!

Hartje and Alexander Joseph DawTyne; one very good friend, Roland Dail; two sisters, Ola Mae Bleitz and Ruth Abshire; three brothers, William Thomas, Reverend Robert Thomas and Paul Thomas; two sisters-in-law, Lois Johnson Thomas and Beulah Daw James Vance; five brothers-in-law, Gordon Bleitz, Jack Abshire, Richard James, Roland Frohling and Donald Seger; one niece, Tamra Frohling Mose; and four nephews, Larry Parker, Loren Finnecum, Charles A. James and Ricky Frohling.

Visitation will be Saturday, January 22, 2022 from 10:30 – 11:30 AM at the United Methodist Church in Milledgeville with the funeral following at Noon with Pastor Joel McClellan officiating. Masks will be required upon entering the church. Burial will be at Oak Knoll Memorial Park in Sterling.

DANIEL TODD SHAULIS

Deputy Chief. He has been an active Fireman for 33 years. His working career was working as a Union Electrician for 20 years, often taking on the tough jobs with high voltage. He loved to figure out a problem, getting it done right. He was a member of IBEW Local 364.

Dan enjoyed hunting deer, prairie dogs in South Dakota, and even bear up in Wisconsin.

His farming background gave him a love of John Deere tractors and he always liked riding four-wheelers and motor bikes. He loved raising vegetables in the garden and canning much of what he raised. Dan had a signature mustache that he wore with pride. This came about after losing all his hair as a young man while beating cancer three times.

While on the Lanark Fire Department he struck up a friendship with one of the EMT’s,

Tricia Ewing. They have enjoyed eight years together as loving companions, celebrating their life together. He will also be dearly missed by their daughter and son, Alexis (Jake) Thomas of Lake Carroll and Austin (fiancé Marilyn) Ewing of Milledgeville and; Dan’s brother, Dave (Jill) Shaulis of Lanark; Dan’s sister, Dianne (Bill) Murphy of Harmon, Illinois; a sister-in-law, Kari (Rod) Hartman; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, great nieces and great nephews, and Ryan Shaulis and his family. Dan is preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Dorothy; his in-laws, John and Shirley Ewing; and a special niece, Cory Murphy at one day old in 1984.

This is where he learned the value of a hard days work, being honest and treating others as you would want to be treated. He kept those traits all of his life and it has made all the difference. As a young man, he also learned to hunt and trap, as he developed a love of shooting. Dan is a 1982 graduate of Lanark High School where he played football.

In his twenties, Dan became a fireman for the Lanark Fire Department, where he served as Chief and was currently in the position of

Justin Wiggins, owner of WCT Midwest and Lee Development, is buying the

seven-story building at 302 First Ave. and converting floors three through seven into five one-bedroom and five two-bedroom apartments, to be called Riverview Lofts.

Work will begin in earnest after the sale of the building goes through on Jan. 31, Wiggins said Tuesday.

An enterprise zone for the

area also is in the works, he said.

The bank and its drivethru will remain, Wiggins said.

He declined to disclose how much the apartments will cost, but said that there will be a website up in about a week that will have that and other details for those interested in leasing a unit.

Beth Wilson at Sauk Valley Properties, 815-288-2881, is the leasing agent.

He also declined to disclose the cost of the building, currently owned by Midland States.

“Our goal is to build quality housing to serve the area, while keeping the construction dollars local as well. We are right on track with that,”

Wiggins said on his Facebook page, adding that “luxury, furnished apartments/condos” are “a housing type that the area severely lacks.”

Wiggins, a civil engineer, is a 2017 Dixon High grad and also a graduate of the Whiteside Area Career Center’s Creating Entrepreneurial Opportunities class.

Amboy overcomes late 3-point barrage by Myre to beat Eastland, take over first place in NUIC South

treynolds@shawmedia.com LANARK – As usual, things went down to the wire in an Amboy-Eastland girls basketball game. This time, though, the Clippers were able to hold off a late Cougars charge.

Amboy led by as many as 13 points late in the third quarter on Jan. 18, only to see Eastland come back and briefly take the lead thanks to a 3-point barrage by Annika Myre.

But free throws in the final minute sent the Clippers to a 41-39 victory Wednesday night, putting them in first place by themselves in the NUIC South.

“It’s just really tough every time we play them,” Amboy senior Olivia Dinges said. “It’s a really big win for us, though, and we’re No. 1 in our conference right now because of it.”

“Every year, I swear, every single year,” Myre said. “This time it didn’t work out the way it has in the past, but it’s just a big rivalry, and both teams really fight to win these games.”

After Eastland rallied to win the Class 1A sectional final between the teams at the end of the 2019-20 season, the Cougars also had a come-from-behind win last season. It looked like lightning was going to strike thrice thanks to Myre.

Amboy (13-6, 4-0 NUIC South) led 28-15 with 58 seconds left in the third quarter after Dinges put back her own miss, then kicked out from the post to Olivia Miller for a baseline jumper on the next possession.

Chloe Sweitzer ended the third with a drive down the lane for Eastland (8-10, 4-1), but Dinges hit a free throw to open the fourth for a 29-17 lead.

Myre hit a 3-pointer with 6:25 to play, but Dinges took a pass from Elly Jones and found an open Maeve Larson for a jumper and a 31-20 lead with 6:12 remaining.

“We hit a lot of shots that we needed to hit early on, and that got us the lead,” Dinges said.

“We definitely work best when we play as a unit. We all hit our shots more when we talk, when we move the ball,” Larson added. “We all talk, we all yell, we all support each other, and that really just helps everybody.”

But the Cougars turned to Myre, and the senior guard delivered – to the tune of six fourth-quarter 3s.

And that was after she left the game midway through the third quarter when she hit her head on the court, coming down hard after jumping up to

She returned with a vengeance.

Myre hit a 3 with 4:52 to play, then hit another 22 seconds later after an Amboy turnover to cut Eastland’s deficit to 31-26. Amboy stretched the lead back to 33-26 on a Jones drive to the basket, but Addison Burkholder hit a free throw, then Myre hit her fourth 3 with 2:32 left to make it 33-30.

Courtney Ortgiesen hit two free throws for Amboy, but a post-to-post pass from Quinc Haverland to Sarah Kempel turned into a three-point play for Eastland, and suddenly Amboy’s lead was 35-33.

The Cougars credited their defense with the late surge, as they forced 12 Amboy turnovers in the final quarter.

“It was not looking good in the first half, but we picked it up offensively, and we picked it up defensively, and that turns into offense,” Myre said.

“We score a lot off of our defense, and that gives us some motivation.

“That’s who we are. We’re a defensive team mostly, and we get a lot of steals and turn them into offense. We thrive off of that, and it’s a big part of our game. It brings us a lot of energy,

and we need that, and it just pushes us to the end.”

Larson hit a free throw to make it 36-33 Amboy, but Myre nailed another 3 to tie the score with 1:28 remaining.

Jones gave Amboy the lead back with two free throws four seconds later after a foul in the backcourt, but Myre rained in her final 3 with 59 seconds to play to give Eastland its first lead since midway through the second quarter, 39-38.

“We have a couple plays that we’ve been working on in practice that get a shooter open, whoever’s hot with whatever’s going on, and I guess that was me tonight,” Myre said. “The shots started going in, so everybody said, ‘Let’s work with it and try to figure it out.’”

“I was frustrated that we weren’t getting to her, and she kept making shots,” Dinges said. “But we just had to keep building on our end, answering her shots and scoring, and trying to stay ahead.”

Jones again came through at the free-throw line, hitting two with 46.3 seconds left as Amboy retook the lead at 40-39. The teams then traded turnovers, with Amboy getting the ball

back and getting it up the court, where Larson was fouled with 3.1 seconds to play. She hit the second one for a twopoint lead, and Burkholder was forced to heave a long 3 at the buzzer that came up short.

“I was so nervous, and then when the first one didn’t go in, that made me even more nervous,” Larson said of the late free throws. “But I think I did better under the pressure.

“It was crazy because we’ve been there so many times in past years, but as a team we knew that we could do it,” she added. “We’ve been thinking about this, we really needed to work together, and we did.”

The teams traded leads in the early going. Haverland’s putback at the buzzer to end the first quarter broke a 6-6 tie, then Paige Joiner hit a jumper to open the second quarter for a 10-6 lead. A basket by Ortgiesen and two free throws by Dinges gave Amboy a 12-11 lead midway through the second, but Sweitzer’s floater in the lane made it 13-12 Eastland with 2:55 left in the first half.

minute apart to give the Clippers an 18-13 lead, but Sweitzer hit two free throws with 24.5 seconds left to make it 18-15 at halftime.

Amboy took control in the third quarter, scoring the first 10 points of the period. Ortgiesen scored on an inbounds play, then Larson hit a jumper for a 22-15 lead just 2:08 into the third. Dinges’ drive down the lane with 3:31 left in the quarter gave Amboy a 24-15 lead, then her putback and assist to Miller a couple of minutes later made it a 13-point margin.

Like Eastland, the Clippers felt it was their play on the defensive end that made the difference in building that lead.

“We talked really well, we worked really hard on bumping, we communicated on the court and every time we were on the bench,” Larson said.

“We figured out what we needed to do, and we all just worked together.”

“We’ve really stepped up our defense throughout the year, and we know how to bump well and rotate and talk,” Dinges added. “It’s always important to talk out there, especially in a big game like this.”

Dinges led Amboy with 16 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two blocks, and Larson had 11 points,

four rebounds and five steals. Jones and Ortgiesen both finished six points and two assists, with Ortgiesen adding seven rebounds and two blocks, and Jones nabbing four steals.

Myre scored all of her game-high 18 points in the final 6:25, and she also had four rebounds for the Cougars.

Sweitzer added eight points, Kempel finished with four points and six rebounds, and Joiner added four points and two steals.

Burkholder chipped in six assists and four steals, Haverland had two points, three rebounds, three steals and two assists, and Delana Erbsen added two points and four rebounds.

Eastland coach Nicole Brinker was pleased with what she saw in her team’s comeback, but wished she would have seen it for the whole game.

“Really what it came down to is that we played with some intensity [down the stretch], and defensively we made some things happen,” she said. “Annika was obviously the huge spark in that quarter, but I thought we just decided to play defense. That was the big deal.

“And when we play with that sense of urgency, and we play with that passion, those are the things we can do. If we played that way in the other three quarters, it’s a different game.”

Fulton finds its groove in win over Milledgeville

treynolds@shawmedia.com MILLEDGEVILLE – It took most of the first quarter Jan. 17, but when the Fulton boys basketball team got going, it really took off.

The Steamers, ranked No. 4 in the Class 1A AP poll, went on runs in both halves of an NUIC South road game against Milledgeville, and pulled away for a 69-35 victory.

“When we get going, it’s really hard to stop us. We got on those runs and build the lead,” junior Ethan Price said. “We had a few guys hit some shots, we bumped up the intensity on defense, and that’s what really got us going and separated us in the game tonight.”

After Bryce Aude’s 3-pointer brought Milledgeville (11-5, 1-1) within 7-5 midway through the first quarter, Fulton (18-1, 3-0) responded with a 17-6 run over a 6 minute, 45-second span to stretch the lead to 24-11.

In the second half, it was a 26-7 run over a 9:21 span to close the third quarter and open the fourth that put the game away. Baylen Damhoff finished off that surge with a dunk with 3:17 left to play to make it 67-34 Steamers.

“We started moving the ball well and got open shots, and a bunch of our shots started to fall. Once that happens, the momentum carries over and everyone else starts making their shots too,” said Damhoff, who had game highs of 30 points, nine rebounds and four blocks. “It was just finding that extra pass for a better shot. Once we started doing that, we hit those open shots and started getting more and more confident.”

Fulton shot 53% from the field (28for-53) for the game, including 33% from 3-point range (6-for-18), and dished 15 assists on offense. Nine different Steamers scored – all five starters and four reserves – led by Damhoff and Price (12 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists).

“It makes it a lot more effective when everybody contributes,” Price said. “We know our starters can score, so when those guys coming off the bench can score too, that’s really big for us. That’s really what we look for, is a nice balance.”

Milledgeville made a little run toward the end of the second quarter, as Aude turned a loose ball into a 3-pointer and Izaac Toms-Smith followed with another 3, then Eric Ebersole scored on the fast break and Toms-Smith added a layup off a postto-post pass from Kieren Harris to get within 27-21 with 14 seconds left before halftime.

stuff, we had our guy in the middle, we were moving the ball, and we were taking good shots and they were falling,” Connor Nye said about the offensive success during that spurt. “We weren’t forcing anything, just letting it come to us, and we rebounded the ball well.

“They’re a good solid team, No. 4 in the state, so we knew coming in that it was going to be challenging,” he added.

“We just couldn’t pass the ball well and we were forcing stuff we shouldn’t have for a lot of the game.”

Fulton seized back the momentum in the final three seconds before the break. Ian Wiebenga was fouled shooting a 3 with 2.9 seconds left, and he hit the first two free throws, then Damhoff grabbed a long rebound on the missed third shot. But the clock started too soon, so play was stopped and two seconds were put on the clock.

The Steamers took a timeout to draw up a play, and Price inbounded the ball from the right side with a lob pass to Damhoff, who was sandwiched between two Missile defenders. He managed to get a shot up, and it bounced on the rim a couple of times before falling through for a 31-21 halftime lead.

Fulton opened the second half with

a Price 3 and a Damhoff putback, but Milledgeville answered with back-toback buckets by Nye. Damhoff scored inside and Patrick Lower converted a three-point play for Fulton, but Kacen Johnson scored for the Missiles to make it 41-27 Fulton with 4:17 left in the third.

But Damhoff scored on a spin move inside, then he knocked down a 3 before Price drove the baseline for a layup, stretching the lead to 48-27 and igniting that big second-half surge.

“In the first half, we just weren’t executing like we want to, but give credit to Milledgeville. Their 2-3 zone was very active, and we played a little too passive; we weren’t aggressive like we normally are,” Fulton coach RJ Coffey said. “I thought once we settled in and started getting the basketball inside a little bit, good things happened.”

The Steamers also turned to their defense to take control. They employed a full-court press at times throughout the game, keeping the Missiles ball-handlers from getting comfortable, and speeding up the Milledgeville offense just enough to cause problems.

Fulton forced 19 Missile turnovers, and limited leading scorer Harris to four points, six rebounds, two assists

and two blocks before he fouled out with 5:30 to play.

“That’s one thing we stress: ball pressure,” Damhoff said. “We never allow it to get in the middle, pretty much, so if we never allow middle, they can’t really get easy shots up, and that’s what helps us have success on the defensive end.”

“We want to apply constant pressure,” Coffey added. “We gave them a couple of different looks, but we just try to utilize our athleticism and our length, and that’s one thing our guys have really bought into, is just nonstop pressure, trying to put teams in bad spots and make them play faster than they’re used to. I thought we kept them kind of uneasy the whole time.”

Ryan Eads had five points, three rebounds and three assists for the Steamers, and Brock Mason added four points, four steals, three rebounds and three assists. Wiebenga and Jacob Jones both finished with four points, and Jones added five rebounds. Drew Dykstra added five fourth-quarter points, and Lower chipped in two assists and a block to go with his threepoint play.

“They have size, and they’re definitely well-coached. They move without the ball, they cut really hard, they hit the open gaps,” Milledgeville coach Brad Grenoble said. “Their defense is great, their hands are all over you – in a good way. … We felt that if we only gave them one shot each trip, we’d be OK and be in the game, but they’ve got those big kids who just jump right over you – not fouling, but they’re just so long and athletic.”

Johnson led the Missiles with 11 points, and he also had five rebounds.

Nye had seven points and six rebounds, Aude added six points, four rebounds and two assists, and Toms-Smith finished with five points. Milledgeville shot 29% from the field (14-for-49) and from 3-point range (4-for-14).

“I’m proud of the way our defense worked, and the effort we gave for the full 32 minutes,” Grenoble said. “But I told the kids from the beginning that there are some teams you can run against and some you can’t, and if we got in a track meet against the cream of the crop, we were going to struggle.

“When we relax and get the ball across half court, and then slow down and run our sets, good things happen.

But I think when we got down 13 or 14 points, we were just trying to do too much. It’s like every shot’s a 5-pointer, and everybody wants to shoot it from deep and not run our offense, just try and make up all that ground at once.

We’ve still got a ways to go on offense, and we just have to keep working at it.”

NICAA Golden Meals program has expanded its services to include more Home-Delivery routes in the Shannon area, for the town of Shannon and the rural areas surrounding it.

The Home-Delivery program is for any senior citizen aged 60 or over who would benefit from having a meal delivered to their home on a daily basis.

Delivery will be available Monday through Friday, for more information or to sign up for the program, call 815232-8896.

Sign up is quick and easy and meals can start within a day or two.

To sign-up for Savanna, Mt. Carroll, Thomson, Chadwick or Milledgeville area please call 815-273-4875 to set up for meal delivery.

TRANSPORTATION CCT now has 4 Buses and 10 Vans, all wheel chair accessible, are available to take people to meals, medical appointments, and to do shopping and other errands in towns and around the county or to Freeport, Sterling, or Clinton.

We have now added medical appointment to Monroe, Rockford and Iowa City with a 3 day notice.

If you need a ride, call 244‑0011 at least at least 48 hours in advance to schedule your trip. For shopping trips there is a 5 bag limit due to space issues.

We provide this service to assist those who no longer drive or would rather have someone else do the driving.

Please remember our drivers are not allowed to go into your home per IDOT Regulations, so if you are not able to get yourself out to the van or bus you would need to have someone there to help you into the van or bus and off the van or buss to go to your appointment.

Trouble hearing on the phone?

Illinois Telecommunication Access Corporation (ITAC) has added a program to help those with cellular service that are having trouble hearing on the phone.

The program provides free amplified telephones and captioning telephone to Illinois residents that are hard of hearing. Applicants must be certified as hard of hearing by a doctor, nurse practitioner, or audiologist; live in Illinois; and have a service that remits to the program.

Lee County Council on Aging (LCCOA) and Whiteside County Senior Center (WCSC) are selection centers for

ITAC. Walk-ins are welcomed from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday at the WCSC. Potential applicants can call the WCSC 815-622-9230, ext. 194, or LCCOA 815288-9236 in advance to set up an appointment to see about qualifying.

Cellphones must be Bluetooth capable.

Applicants applying for this program, should bring in the cell phone. Please bring a phone bill with all the pages for landline service or cellular service (prepaid cell uses that don’t receive a phone bill must bring the cellphone) and proof of address (driver’s license, state ID, or a bill with the applicant’s name and address on it).

SERVICES Exercise Equipment

The Senior Center has six pieces of professional-grade equipment, treadmill, rowing machine, Stair Stepper, E-Force Cross Trainer exerciser and recumbent bicycle.

You are welcome to use any of these anytime the Senior Center is open, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

These six pieces of exercise equipment have been

donated to help seniors get some needed movement and cardio work that can improve both their physical and mental states.

And as anyone can tell you, a few minutes walking or riding a bike can go a long way.

Remember in our new building we have no steps so the equipment is so much easier to get to.

So bring a few friends and all of you can work out together, and the best part is it is FREE!!!!

We ask that COVID-19 protocols be observed and after using the equipment that you sanitize with the wipes provided for everyone’s safety.

What do you do with your old cellphones?

Carroll County Senior Center has a donation box for old and broken cellphones.

We recycle them by sending them into a company that refurbishes them for emergency 911 phones for areas devastated by disasters and for sale to low income persons. We currently have a box at the Senior Center.

If you know of anyone looking to get rid of old cellphones have them drop them off at the Carroll County Senior Center during our regular business hours 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday thru Friday.

Tax-Aide for the 2021 tax year will be available

Local Coordinator, AARP Tax-Aide AARP Tax-Aide will once again be preparing taxes at the Carroll County Senior Center.

The approximate date to begin will be the week of Feb. 7.

The current schedule is to prepare taxes on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Other days maybe added if it is necessary.

AARP is not allowing us to do taxes in person again this year. The tax process will be very similar to what was done last year.

The client will make an appointment to “drop-off” their tax informa-

tion and consult with a client facilitator.

The facilitator will make an appointment for the client to return to “pick-up” their completed tax return.

It is hoped the client will be able to pick-up their completed tax return on the next scheduled day of tax preparation.

When the client comes to pick-up their completed tax return, they will meet with either the counselor who prepared their taxes or with me, Sandra Aude, Local Coordinator.

With the increase of the “corona virus and other variants”, protocols will be in place - masks are required, social distancing, hand sanitizing, and

frequent cleaning.

To make an appointment, please call the Carroll County Senior Center at 815-244-1800 after Wednesday, Jan. 5.

When setting an appointment, you need to keep in mind that you must have all the necessary forms to prepare your taxes, i.e. – W-2’s for wages, salaries, tips, etc., 1099’s for interest, dividends, IRA distributions, pensions, annuities, and social security benefits.

REMINDER: if you received any unemployment benefits, the government will not send you a form. You must log into your unemployment account and download your form.

If you will be claiming income from your own business, make sure you have complete and accurate records for your income and any expenditures you may have. This information is necessary when creating a schedule C. Expenses may include mileage, vehicle expenses, supplies, insurance (health or other), repairs, rent or lease of property or equipment to name a few.

Carroll County Veterans Assistance Commission The Carroll County Veterans Assistance Commission, located at 17612 E. Benton St. P.O. Box 126, Mt. Carroll, is operated by and for Veterans.

The Commission is committed to providing services and financial aid to Qualified Military Veterans and their families who reside in Carroll County.

Information can be obtained from this office on VA Disability Compensation, VA Pensions, VA Burials, VA Healthcare, Educational Benefits, lost discharge certificates and other benefits administered by the VA. Carroll County Transit, which takes our veterans to the Madison, Wisconsin VA Hospital, can now take veterans to the Iowa City Hospital for their medical needs.

The trips to either Hospital are free to the veteran. The VAC will also pay for medical appointment trips to Monroe, Rockford, and the Quad Cities.

The medical appointments at these locations will be through The Commu-

nity Choice Act and will be scheduled for you.

They will NOT schedule your transportation for you. If you are unable to keep your medical appointment, please call and reschedule right away.

Here are the income guidelines for the license plate discount. If you qualify, you can apply for the Benefits Access Program, (Formerly Circuit Breaker) and receive a discount on your license plate sticker.

The new income guidelines for the license plate discount (gross income) are: 1-person household, $33,562; 2-person household, $44,533; 3-person household $55,500.

Hospice Services

We now have Hospice brochures at the Senior Center for anyone that may be needing this service. They are a wonderful service to help prepare family and friends for the loss of a loved one, and also provides additional support often needed after the loss occurs.

Their emphasis is to assist families who desire to care for their loved one during the final phases of life. They care for the physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs of their patients and their families as they deal with this period of illness and bereavement.

Teacher’s legacy lives on through Foundation

azoellner@shawmedia.com CHANA – The Maggie & Amos Foundation awarded nearly $5,000 in “Elf-Sized” grants to area educators for classroom activities and improvement projects.

The 19 “Elf-Sized” grants – which totaled $4,950 – went to 21 educators in a dozen schools. Recipients were announced Dec. 26.

“We had a really good mixture of what grants were proposed for,” said Megan Dettman, one of The Maggie & Amos Foundation’s main coordinators.

“We did get some pretty awesome ones.”

The foundation is a 501(c)(3) established by friends and coworkers of Margaret “Maggie” (Rosko) Meyer who died in a house fire in Byron on Oct. 19, 2016, along with her 3-year-old son, Amos Meyer.

Duane C. Meyer, Maggie’s ex-husband and Amos’ father, is charged with their murders and arson. The case is pending in Ogle County court.

Maggie was a teacher at the Chana Education Center.

“It [the foundation] is about spreading goodwill in their name and not letting people forget what good they brought to the world,” Dettman said.

Dettman, Lynn Kalnins and Stephanie White are the foundation’s main coordinators.

The “Elf-Sized” grants are meant to help educators offer that extra bit of fun in their classrooms, she said. Often, money for such things comes out of the teacher’s own pocket, Dettman noted.

This is the fifth year The Maggie & Amos Foundation has offered the grants, she said. Funding comes from the Infinity Run, a fundraiser the foundation hosts.

“We didn’t do the grants our first year because we didn’t really know how the foundation was going to evolve,” Dettman said.

The maximum grant amount this time was $300, she said. They got more than 35 applications, but unfortunately didn’t have the funds to fulfill all requests, Dettman said.

The grants are named “Elf-Sized” because of the small amount and because “Elf” was Maggie’s favorite movie, Dettman said. It’s also why they tend to announce the winners around Christmas.

Recipients are selected by a blind vote, Dettman said.

Kalnins puts together a description of the grant proposal and amount requested, then sends that out to people involved in The Maggie & Amos Foundation, Dettman said. They rank the

They fund as many grants as possible with their budget, Dettman said.

“It’s really cool for us, because it does go back into the community,” she said.

Grant recipients are: Amboy Junior High School — Amboy Kelly Foster, the seventh- and eighth grade social studies teacher, is creating a makerspace for students in an Elements of Design class. Students will learn entrepreneurial skills as they create and run their own business plans.

Kaylee Jones, the sixth grade math teacher at, is buying math VersaTiles — an interactive math curriculum tool.

Ashton-Franklin Center High School — Ashton Jeri Dempsey, a science teacher, is purchasing solar panels for teaching, which will allow students to explore electricity, alternative energy and circuits.

Kelly Viall, an agriculture and science teacher, is getting sets of Realityworks injection pads that provide students a realistic experience of giving injections in both medical and veterinarian careers.

Kim Penick, a math teacher, is supporting her “Mystery Student” Challenge program, which promotes positive student behavior and classroom camaraderie.

Mary Morgan Elementary School — Byron Maggie Morehead, a third grade teacher, plans to create a “Read-a-Latte Café” reading center complete with hot chocolate and cider, comfy seating and cozy lighting. The aim is to encourage students to work hard on their reading skills by earning special time in the

café-inspired space.

Forreston Grade School — Forreston Janese Michael, a second grade teacher, is getting a dual microphone PA system to help her students communicate more clearly during read-aloud activities, which are a classroom favorite.

Erin Schmidt, a fifth grade teacher, and Kristina Genandt, a fourth grade teacher, sought help purchasing materials to support the after-school science club they created four fourth- and fifth graders. They meet each month to challenge students with a fun STEM problem-based learning project.

Oregon Elementary School — Oregon Cynthia Kilmer, a kindergarten teacher, is looking to rejuvenate her classroom library space to make reading more enticing and exciting for students.

Erin Welker, a third grade teacher, wants to help support struggling readers in her class. She is looking to offer more book options for students at lower reading levels are that are more age-appropriate and of greater interest.

Jackie O’Rorke, a kindergarten teacher, plans to use her grant money to create an outdoor classroom for all Oregon Elementary School students.

The space will provide high quality learning experiences for children to interact with the natural world through play-based and multi-sensory activities.

Centennial Grade School — Polo Jodi Merrell and Stephanie Moring, both preschool teachers, want to purchase a color printer to more easily create a wide variety of visuals, schedules and pictures to help their students learn not only the skills to navigate their school day, but also to support their visual learning.

Maggie and Amos Aplington Middle School — Polo Katie Chesnut, Aplington Middle School secretary, noted that teachers in her building could benefit greatly from a Cricut Maker that can make the school a more pleasing space for students, as well as give students the chance to design and craft shirts for fundraising efforts.

Tilton Elementary School — Rochelle Sarah Laviere, a speech teacher, plans to use her funds to purchase manipulatives and activities to support her students speech and communication needs. The games and hands-on materials help her students stay more engaged during their sessions with Laviere.

Lincoln Elementary School — Rochelle Katelyn Gabbard, a first grade teacher, is new this year and has been borrowing many of her materials from more tenured colleagues. The grant funds will help Gabbard purchase her own supplies to continue growing her classroom materials to better support her current and future students.

Nicole Tobler, a kindergarten teacher, wants to create play-based learning stations for her students. She has been working hard to offer more hands-on learning for her students. She has many ideas of what to do with the materials she’ll be purchasing, including a farmer’s market, produce stand, hot cocoa cart, tree farm and pet Stillman Valley High School — Stillman Valley Ryan Read, a teacher in the high school business department, plans to use the grant money to fix the classroom’s 3D printer. Once it’s working again, Read is excited to begin utilizing the printer to help support STEAM curriculum in classes such as science, consumer education and business.
