Fire destroys Lanark hardware store, lumberyard

LANARK – The nearly 50-year-old Lanark Building Center, which housed Carroll Service Co., a lumberyard, hardware store and ag coop at 213 W. Carroll St., was destroyed by a fire Sunday, Jan. 9.

Firefighters from five counties, many of them volunteers, responded to the blaze, which was called in to 911 around 7:30 p.m. by a passerby who saw smoke in the area, Lanark Fire Chief Cory Barnes said.

The fire started in the workshop area and destroyed not only the building and contents, but also a forklift and two pickup trucks, Barnes said. No one was injured.

Barnes expects the damage will top $2 million.

A little more than 1.2 million gallons of water, from Lanark and also hauled in from Shannon and Chadwick so as not to drain the village water supply, was used to fight the fire, Barnes said. The scene was cleared shortly after 1 p.m. Jan. 10.

The state fire marshal is investigating, but the cause is not suspicious, the chief said.

The lumberyard made fighting the fire more challenging, as did the paint, chemicals and other building materials inside the store, the chief said. Fortunately, the only propane on-site was in small cylinders used with barbecue grills, and those were removed before the fire could reach them.

Larger propane tanks, seed and other ag chemicals were at another site, Barnes said.

The frigid temperatures also played a role: The streets had to be salted multiple times to keep from icing over, and firefighters “couldn’t be left out there too long” and had to be rotated in and out.

In addition to the lumberyard and hardware store, Carroll Service Co., which has branches in Carroll and western Ogle counties, provides agriculture and energy-related products.

It has been in business in this village of 1,500 since 1963, and was a full-service hardware store and lumberyard with nearly 50 vendors selling paints, tools, construction and building materials, decking products, grass seed, fertilizer and more, the company said on its Facebook page.

“Hopefully, they’ll rebuild,” Barnes said.

“While we are saddened by the devastating fire last night, we want to thank all of the local fire departments that responded,” the company posted on its Facebook page. ”We are extremely grateful for our local first responders and the support from our local communities.”

SPRINGFIELD – Sangamon County authorities are holding a Thayer man as a suspect in the stabbing death of an Illinois Department of Children and Family Services worker.

Police arrived at the home in Thayer – a small town 20 miles south of Springfield – in response to a 911 call at 4:11 p.m.

Jan. 4 reporting a possible stabbing.

After arriving at the scene, law enforcement spotted a blood-like substance near the door of the home. Officers forced their way into the house and found Deidre Silas, 36, who died from her injuries.

Silas had gone to the home to check the welfare of children.

Detectives arrived and obtained a search warrant for the home. Through the investigation, they developed a suspect, Benjamin Howard Reed.

Reed, 32, was located at a hospital in Decatur where he sought treatment for a minor wound about two hours after the initial 911 call. He was questioned by detectives at the hospital and then taken to the Sangamon County Jail.

Silas worked as an investigator for DCFS for about six months. She previously also worked for the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice. She graduated from Illinois State University in 2008 with a degree in criminal justice. She received her master’s degree in public administration in 2019.

“Deidre responded to this call and dedicated herself to the children, families and communities she served, and we will be forever grateful for her work. She was an incredible person, and her brightness and positivity will be missed not only by her family and friends, but also her second family at DCFS,” DCFS Director Marc D. Smith said.

Silas is the second DCFS worker killed on the job in recent years.

Pam Knight, 59, of Dixon, went to a Milledgeville home on Sept. 29, 2017, to remove a 2-year-old boy from the custody of his father, Andrew Sucher, 29, of Rock Falls.

As Knight got out of her car, prosecutors said Sucher pushed her, causing her to strike her head on the concrete driveway then stomped on her head, causing

a skull fracture and brain injury. She died of her injuries four and a half months later.

Sucher later pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 21 years.

In the wake of Benjamin H. Reed the news of Silas’ death, Gov. JB Pritzker released a statement.

“There is no higher calling than the work to keep children and families safe and Deidre lived that value every single day,” Pritzker stated. “Our most vulnerable are safer because she chose to serve.

I can think of no more profound legacy.”

In 2019, two northwest Illinois legislators sponsored legislation to extend protections to DCFS and Adult Protective Services workers. Those lawmakers, House Deputy Minority Leader Tom Demmer, R-Dixon, and State Rep. Tony McCombie, R-Savanna, issued a statement Wednesday after Silas’ death.

“Deidre Silas, and Pam Knight before her, are not the only DCFS workers to be viciously attacked in recent years,” the lawmakers said in the statement. “We became involved in this issue because of Pam Knight. It’s tragically unfortunate that the need now exists to speak out on behalf of the next victim. The legislation we pushed so hard for would have removed the ambiguity when it comes to charges to make it clear that if you attack a DCFS or Adult Protective Services worker, you would face the same penalty as if you attacked a teacher or a fire fighter.”

Roberta Lynch, the executive director for the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, or AFSCME, Council 31, said in a statement that they would review the facts and press for any necessary changes to DCFS operations.

“This tragedy is a stark reminder that front-line DCFS employees like Deidre do demanding, dangerous and essential jobs every day, often despite inadequate resources and tremendous stress,” Lynch said.

SPRINGFIELD – Two local legislators who previously sponsored legislation to extend protections to Department of Children and Family Services and Adult Protective Services workers after the murder of DCFS Investigator Pam Knight in Carroll County in 2019, issued a joint statement Jan. 5 after learning of the murder of DCFS Investigator Deidre Silas in Sangamon County on Jan. 4.

House Bill 3933, the current version of this legislation, is stalled in the House Rules Committee. The first time this change was proposed was House Bill 4586, sponsored by McCombie and Demmer in January 2019.

When that effort failed to get the support of supermajority Democrats, the legislators refiled the legislation as House Bill 1482, Demmer’s and McCombie’s statement said.

This time the bill passed the House with bipartisan support before stalling in the Senate in 2021. McCombie and Demmer refiled the bill again as House Bill 3933 in the 102nd General Assembly.

Lanark fire pulled volunteers from near and far into action While there are many times that rural living is not my preferred life, last week it showed again why it is a great place to live. While it was no direct impact to me, directly it showed how rural people all come together.

By now the news of the burning of the Carroll Service Home Center is old, but all that everyone did that night, most important all those fire, ambulance and emergency personnel who were there in the cold to the wee hours cannot go without appreciation, along with the city workers and all of those who also came to assist.

Many came from near and far to be able to assist in the cold weather that night.

I certainly don’t envy the decisions and the work that will go into what happened and what the future will hold.

State Rep. Tony McCombie will seek 89th District House seat

ttaylor@shawmedia.com SAVANNA – Tony McCombie will be seeking the Republican nomination for the 89th District.

With redistricting, her Savanna home is in the 89th District. She has served as the 71st District representative since 2017.

The primary is June 28.

The 89th District includes Carroll, Jo Daviess, Ogle, Stephenson, Boone, Winnebago and DeKalb counties.

“I look forward to introducing myself, Tony McCombie

listening and earning the support of all voters who crave a better direction for Illinois,” McCombie said in a Jan. 11 news release. “I’m guided by conservative principles, common sense and am committed to delivering results.”

McCombie owns Blue Appraisals, which appraises real estate in Iowa and Illinois, and she also serves as a broker of real estate with Mel Foster Co. The

Western Illinois University graduate was a member of the Savanna City Council and then mayor of Savanna.

McCombie said her legislative priorities remain education, job growth, ethics reform and public safety.

McCombie first won a legislative seat in 2016, defeating incumbent Mike Smiddy. She has twice fended off challenges by Joan Padilla in 2018 and 2020.

NWILED announces John D. Cooke III Memorial Entrepreneurial Scholarship HANOVER – Since 2018, Northwest Illinois Economic Development has offered an entrepreneurial scholarship.

On Dec. 8, the NWILED Board of Directors unanimously voted to rename the annual scholarship in honor and remembrance of the late John D Cooke III who was a founding member of the organization.

The application window for the NWILED John D. Cooke III Memorial Entrepreneurial Scholarship is open.

All high school seniors in Carroll and Jo Daviess counties are eligible to apply.

This year, NWILED will offer three scholarships to graduating high school seniors who are entrepreneurial and want to start a business or pursue a career in business.

John D. Cooke III There is one $2,000 first-place award and two $1,500 runners-up awards. Awardees will be invited to NWILED’s annual banquet in the fall.

Recipients shall be full-time students in good academic standing in the qualifying school year (2021-22).

This is not a need-based scholarship. Scholarships can be used for startup costs related to launching a business and or advancing a career in business through education and training.

Roger farmed right up until the age of 81, which is quite impressive and an example of his work ethic, determination, and “watch this” mentality. Roger was a member of the Lanark Lions Club, Carroll County Farm Bureau and Soil & Water Conservation District and Lanark Church of the Brethren.

Roger learned to fly and enjoyed piloting a plane for twenty-five years. He also liked traveling across the Midwest to watch dirt-track racing with friends and family. To no surprise, at 70 years old, Roger was done watching people race and decided that it was never too late to become a race car driver. He raced many times between age 70 and 75, even racing against his grandson, Gabe. He also enjoyed horseback riding, the old family reunions, having coffee with his buddies, striking up conversations with strangers and becoming friends, studying historical photos of the surrounding area, and most of all just

Born: July 7, 1940 Died: January 7, 2022 Roger Gene Schrader, age 81 of Lanark, Illinois passed away Friday, January 7, 2022 surrounded by his family after a short, hard fought, battle with cancer.

Farming from a young age, marrying his sweetheart and raising a family, even driving a dirt-track racecar from the age of 70 to 75, to bareback riding a horse in his late 70s, he didn’t leave many stones unturned. At 80, he was still begging to water ski with the grandkids. He lived life to the fullest and made it well known how blessed he was.

Roger was born July 7, 1940, the son of Walter and Alice (Edler) Schrader. He is a 1958 graduate of the Lanark High School, excelling at gymnastics, baseball and football, where

being with family, especially the grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Roger will be dearly missed by the love of his life, Lenore of Lanark; his beloved dog, Toby; his son, Jim (Roxanne) Schrader of Lanark; his daughter, Teresa (Jeff) Kirwan of New Windsor, Illinois; five grandchildren, Chelsea (Trenton) Diehl, Gabe (Kenzie) Schrader, Ashley (Keegan) Quinby, Katie (Sam) Burnett and Christina Kirwan; five great-grandchildren, Adalyn Diehl, Hudson Schrader, Wyatt, Evelyn and Beckham Quinby; and his brother, Ron (Pam) Schrader of Lena, Illinois.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Alice, and his in-laws, Lester and Avanette VanMatre.

A private family service was held Thursday, January 13, 2022 at the Lanark Church of the Brethren with burial in the Lanark Cemetery.

he earned the nickname “Night Train.” In 1959, Roger received an agriculture degree from the University of Illinois Short Course Curriculum. While revving his pipes on his blue and white 1956 Ford Galaxy 2-door hardtop, he was noticed by his future sweetheart and life-long love, Lenore Nola VanMatre. On September 17, 1960, Roger and Lenore were married at the Evangelical United Brethren Church of Shannon. In 2021, they celebrated 61 years of wedded bliss. Jim and Teresa, their son and daughter, were two of Roger’s greatest blessings.

Farming was Roger’s way of life, at first with Joe Lower, then Ted Miller, and then 28 years with Arman Stover around the Lanark area. The last 26 years have been sharing his love of farming with the family. In addition to farming, Roger and Lenore worked as a team selling Super Crost Seed. The teamwork of Lenore selling and Roger delivering worked well as they enjoyed trips to Africa, Hawaii, Ireland, Puerto Rico, England, Switzerland, and Austria. Roger enjoyed raising cattle and hogs along with many special horses, don-

Brian Stewart will not seek reelection to state Senate

ttaylor@shawmedia.com FREEPORT – Brian W. Stewart announced Jan. 14 that he would not seek reelection to the Illinois Senate.

“It has been a distinct honor and privilege in serving in the Illinois Senate and I am proud to leave a legacy that served the people of Illinois for the better,” the 64-year-old Stewart said in a news release.

“It has been hard yet rewarding work, and I believe my story has been a testament that humble beginnings

do not preclude success if you are willing to put in the work and dedication,” he added.

As a lawmaker, Stewart has focused on introducing legislation t h a t f u n d s l a w Brian W. Stewart enforcement and addresses mental health care in small communities.

His committee assignments were pensions, agriculture, energy and

public utilities, financial institutions, health care access, judiciary, veterans affairs and appropriations.

Stewart, a Republican, has served in the 45th District since 2019. He defeated David Simpson in the 2018 general election, securing 62% of the vote. He was unopposed in that primary.

Before that, Stewart represented the 89th District in the statehouse from 2013 to 2018.

He was a military police officer and investigator with the U.S. Army and a retired Stephenson County Sheriff’s

sergeant. He served as a Freeport alderman and Freeport Township trustee, as well as a member of the Stephenson County 9-11 Board.

Stewart said he has nearly 50 years of public service and looks forward to the next chapter in his life.

Stewart & Associates is his business security and private investigations firm. It employs nearly 500 people in northern Illinois.

The 45th District includes Jo Daviess, Stephenson, Winnebago, Carroll, Ogle, Whiteside, Lee, DeKalb and La Salle counties.

Grade school students throughout Ogle and Carroll counties learned about Christmas tree farms in December.

“There were 38 programs presented to 783 students during the month. The Ag in the Classroom program teaches students that many items we use every day originate from crops grown by farmers. Some crops we eat. Others are used to make our homes beautiful.

Many are used to make clothes and other helpful items. Moreover, some crops help us celebrate,” said Melinda Charbonneau, Ag in the Classroom program coordinator.

Trees, like corn, are grown on farms. Tree growers do many of the same things other farmers do. However, a tree crop is different because it takes seven to 10 years before a tree can be harvested.

“In addition, a tree farmer must plant three new seedlings for every tree that they harvest

because seedlings have many enemies including insects and disease, rabbits and deer, “ Charbonneau said. “Like other crops, trees must be fertilized and weeded. The farmer also prunes the trees to control how fast they grow and shapes them so when they are sold, they have a shape people will like.”

Charbonneau said harvest time is very busy for growers.

“The trees that will be cut must be selected and tagged.

Once the trees are cut, they are baled nice and tight so that the branches will not be damaged as they are shipped to tree lots to be sold. Because trees stay in the fields for so long, they have four to 10 years to be a habitat for small animals and insects.

They also make oxygen for all living things. Therefore, the next time you think of products grown on a farm, add Christmas trees to your list,” she said.

Charbonneau thanked Dollinger Christmas Tree Farm in

Lanark for the many tree samples it provides each year.

“These samples provide an opportunity for students to compare the various kinds of Christmas trees,” Charbonneau said.

Ag in the Classroom is a program to help students gain a greater awareness of the role of agriculture in the economy and society. Students learn that thousands of farm products are in the world around them – on their plates, in the clothes they wear, in the medicine that makes them well, and in earthfriendly fuels and plastics.
