Veterans clinic opens in former Sterling Kmart By KATHLEEN A. SCHULTZ kschultz@shawmedia.com
STERLING – The new Sterling VA Outpatient Clinic is opening this week in the long-vacant Kmart building on East Lincolnway. Highlands Development LLC of Kansas City, Missouri, bought the building at 2901 E. Lincolnway for $1 million about two years ago, with plans to redevelop it and the other empty buildings on the site into a mix of business and retail space. The Veterans Administration is its first tenant, and the clinic, part of the VA Iowa City Healthcare System, is the anchor for the site. The VA is moving its outpatient clinic at 406 Ave. C downtown into 17,600 square feet of leased space at this site across from Northland Mall. That will nearly double its size, so in addition to its current offerings, the new VA outpatient clinic will have a larger, dedicated physical therapy space with a gym, a lab for the radiology department, and more space to provide mental health care. A home-based primary care unit also is being added, which means some veterans will be getting house calls, although virtually at first. The clinic also used the opportunity

Like the smaller clinic before it, the new facility will eliminate the need for some veterans to travel to the Iowa City VA complex for treatment, especially with the new services being offered. “That trip to Iowa City isn’t always a convenient one,” Lee said. Plus, “it continues to show that our money is where our mouth is when it comes to honoring veterans.”
It also shows the benefits of public-private partnerships, he said, noting the city helped by providing incentives for the site to be developed, including creating a special business district for the area. “All of us working together have produced this kind of thing,” he said. “As mayor, I’m hoping that development in the old Kmart might spur interest in the mall across the street. Maybe this will make it more attractive for a buyer to come in and develop it.”

Born: September 7, 1947 in Freeport, IL Died: January 1, 2022 in Rockford, IL Darold Lynn Wubbena, 74, of Shannon, died Saturday January 1, 2022 at Alden-Park-Strathmor Nursing Home in Rockford, IL. He was born September 7, 1947 in Freeport, IL, the son of Robert and Dorothy (Artman) Wubbena. Darold farmed in the Shannon, IL area. He served his country in The United States National Guard. He was a member of The Shannon American Legion. He enjoyed going to farm sales, playing cards, driving his truck and semi, having coffee with

She was impressed by the remodeling, noting how old the building looked before. It is nearly five decades old – Kmart opened in July 1973, and Monday’s opening came one day before the eighth anniversary of its closure, on Jan. 11, 2014. The current clinic, which opened next door to County Market in November 2011, will become the Illinois Department of Employment Security’s new Sterling office. Master Gardener program offers hybrid training FREEPORT – The University of Illinois Extension’s Master Gardener Training will take place in Stephenson County starting in February. Interested people can apply now for training. Applications can be obtained by calling the office at 815-235-4125 or go to the website, go.illinois.edu/jsw. The training includes videos, a Master Gardener manual, reading materials and quizzes. Participants will complete videos and reading assignments on their own and then meet in person on Tuesday mornings at the University of Illinois Extension-Stephenson County for discussion, review and follow-up. Training consists of 11 sessions from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesdays, starting Feb. 15 and concluding April 26. “We are happy to offer a flipped classroom style Master Gardner training,” said Nikki Keltner, program coordinator at University of Illinois Extension. “This will enable participants to complete the information at their own pace, but have the opportunity to meet with an instructor, local staff and other participants for an interactive discussion.”
Coursework covers botany, soils and fertility, plant disease, entomology, integrated pest management, annuals and perennials, tree, shrubs and woody vines, lawns, small and tree fruits, vegetables, U of I resources and more. Once training is complete, participants join the existing Master Gardener volunteers in service to the community, fulfilling the Master Gardner mission of “Helping others learn to grow.” As volunteers, Master Gardeners make a difference in the community. Active Master Gardeners in Stephenson County contribute volunteer hours in many ways, such as answering homeowners’ questions, teaching gardening lessons for children, planning and presenting at educational workshops, creating display gardens and working with local organizations. Registration is required to attend Master Gardener Training. An orientation interview will be conducted with participants in advance of the class. Registration for the training is $175. The Morrison girls basketball team opened the Northwest Illinois Girls Basketball Shootout on Saturday in Lanark with a 56-38 victory over Dakota. The Fillies, who were filling in for Erie-Prophetstown after the Panthers were forced into a COVID-19 pause this past week, led 21-13 at halftime, then pulled away with an 18-6 scoring edge in the third quarter. Shelby Veltrop poured in 20 points to pace Morrison, and Camryn Veltrop finished with 15. Diana Robbins added eight points, and Bayleigh Brewer scored six. Hannah Bowers had 18 points, and Mary Zettle scored 16 for Dakota. Aquin 45, Amboy 37: The Clippers were outscored 21-15 in the third quarter and 13-9 in the fourth as the Bulldogs rallied for a win at the Northwest Illinois Shootout in Lanark. Olivia Dinges finished with 14 points, Maeve Larson added eight, Haidyn Zimmerly scored six, and Elly Jones chipped in five for Amboy, which led 13-11 at halftime. Alyssa Hunziker led Aquin with 14 points, and Meghan Carlyle added 13. Eastland 52, Byron 47: The Cougars rallied from a 14-5 deficit after the opening quarter to notch a win at their own Northwest Illinois Shootout. Annika Myre had 20 points, five assists and three rebounds for Eastland (6-9), and Addison Burkholder added 10 points, 10 rebounds, seven steals and five assists. Chloe Sweitzer finished with seven points, five assists and three rebounds, and Delana Erbsen and Quinc Haverland scored six points each. Haverland also grabbed five rebounds. Ava Kultgen’s 17 points paced Byron, and Ella Grundstrom added eight. Grennan won the title at 120 pounds. Morrison’s Nate Schaefer also advanced to the finals with three pins, but he lost 6-3 in the title bout at 220 pounds. Morrison had 35 points, led by Schaefer’s runner-up finish. Rock Falls finished with 11 points, with Aaron Meenen finishing fifth at 113 pounds. Locals win titles in Polo: Four area wrestlers – two from Fulton and two from Erie-Prophetstown – won their weight classes at the Polo Invitational, leading a contingent of 18 locals who finished in the top four. Fulton’s Ben Fosdick (138 pounds) and Zane Pannell (170) both won titles, with Fosdick winning a 7-4 decision in the finals, and Pannell taking a 19-4 technical fall. Erie-Prophetstown’s championships came from Andrew Bomleny (195) and Elijah Friedrichsen (285);
Bomleny won a 2-1 decision, and Friedrichsen finished off his finale with a pin in 1:53 and earned Most Outstanding Wrestler honors. Polo was the top local team, taking third with 116 points. Oregon placed sixth (98 points), and Erie-Prophetstown was right behind in seventh (95). Fulton finished 10th (63), and West Carroll was 14th (25). Freeport won the team title with 195 points, and Genoa-Kingston was second (130). Wyatt Doty (126) and Wyatt Queckboerner (182) were both runners-up for Polo, and Braydon Altherr (152) took third. Lucas Nelson (132), Nicholas Cain (160), Wayde Reimer (170) and Blake Diehl (220) all finished fourth for the Marcos. Oregon got runner-up finishes from Lane Halverson (132), Seth Stevens (138) and Evan Flaharty (285), while Anthony Bauer (145) took third and Griffin Marlatt (113) finished fourth for the Hawks. Nick Ballard took third (220) for E-P, and West Carroll’s Noah Rannow (120) also placed third. Girls basketball West Carroll 60, East Dubuque 30: Kylie Hill had 22 points, nine rebounds and 11 steals and Tori Moshure added 12 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Abbey Skiles finished with seven points and seven rebounds, and Cora Collins chipped in five points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots for the Thunder.
