ENF offering 2022 Wildlife/Historical Bus Tour APPLE RIVER – The Eagle Nature Foundation will be conducting a wildlife/historical bus tour to Nebraska on March 14-17. Participants on the four-day tour should expect to see hundreds of thousands of sandhill cranes, which stop in the area on their migration north. Participants also will be looking for whooping cranes, snow geese, bald eagles, prairie dogs, prairie chickens, burrowing owls, snowy owls and other waterfowl. Those on the tour will learn about some of the nation’s interesting history as they visit the DeSoto Wildlife Refuge, home of the 1865 steamboat, Bertrand; the Omaha winter headquarters of the Mormon Trail; Stuhr Pioneer Museum with its historic pio-

neer village; Nebraska Prairie Museum with its display of one of America’s World War II Prisoner of War Camps; Fort Kearny State Park, home of the first fort built to protect travelers on the Oregon Trail; the Amana Colonies; Hastings Museum of Natural and Cultural History, featuring the world’s largest display of whooping cranes and an opportunity to see a film in their seven-story IMAX Theater; and the Great Platte River Road Archway Monument, an eightstory building right over Interstate 80, which takes you through the history and pioneer development of Nebraska, the Oregon Trail and the present Interstate Highway system. Several wildlife areas will be visited including Nebraska Rainwater Basins;

Crane Meadows; Rowe Sanctuary; the Lain Nicolson Audubon Center with its straw bale building and crane blinds on the Platte River; and a couple of prairie dog villages. An evening will be spent on an old railroad bridge watching thousands of sandhill cranes fly from their feeding areas to their nighttime roosts on the islands in the Platte River. The tour will leave from the Ramada west of Galena on Highway 20 promptly at 8 a.m. March 14 and return about 6 p.m. March 17. Cars may be left in the back parking lot of the Ramada while participants are on the tour. Cost of the tour is $695 a person or $645 a person for double occupancy. The cost for groups of four or more is

Christmas bird count indicates lowest number since 1966 APPLE RIVER – The results of the 2021 Christmas bird count, conducted by members of the Eagle Nature Foundation and the Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation on Dec. 16, have been released by Terrence Ingram, compiler for this count since its inception in 1966. “The number of birds and the variety of birds counted during this year’s count is the lowest ever recorded by this count,” Ingram said in a news release. “Only 889 birds of 33 species were counted by the four teams and bird feeder watchers. Scott Deaner and Susie Reisenbigler donated $500 to On the Move with Parks and Recreation for the future Morrison Bark Park. Reisenbigler is a native of Morrison and now lives in Texas with Deaner. They still receive the Morrison Sentinel paper and have seen people donating to the dog park. They come home to visit Susie’s parents, Sharon and Merle Reisenbigler, and bring their dog Reina with them when they visit and wanted to donate to the cause. rarely missing a game on the radio (even in non-winning seasons). In her later years, she was finally able to attend a game at Wrigley Field, with some of her children. She was also an avid journalist, documenting decades of her life in vivid detail, including each and every visit with family and friends, meals she shared with others, and nature she observed. She never wanted to forget a beautiful bird sighting, a delicious new recipe, or a conversation shared with a loved one. Her detailed journal entries will be cherished by her family members for generations. June was an active member of Carroll County Home Extension and the Lanark Church of the Brethren. She was involved in a number of activities at the church, which included teaching children for many years. She adored all children, especially babies, and children seemed to always love her, too. She rarely missed a Sunday service while her health allowed, and she continued her Home Extension activities well into her 80s. After Kenny retired, she pursued other outside interests, which included reading electric meters and volunteering at a local thrift store. She and Kenny moved into town and enjoyed spending more leisure time

together, especially doing crossword puzzles. They were rarely apart in their almost 63 years of marriage. June was a caring, devoted wife, and her love for her husband and family was apparent each and every day. Whenever she sat next to a loved one, she would pat their hand as a way to let them know she cared. She had a contagious smile and a wonderful sense of humor, both of which live on in her offspring. Her children and grandchildren were her pride and joy. June and Kenny enjoyed traveling the United States, and took many trips to visit their children and grandchildren in Arizona, Washington and Virginia. They were lucky enough to visit almost all 50 states and even visited relatives in Sellnrod Germany. At age 92, she was able to fly and attend the wedding of one of her grandchildren in the Seattle area. Her newest great-grandchild, Amara June, age 1, was named in her honor. June will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Visitation will be held on December 28th from 5pm to 7pm at the Lanark Church of the Brethren, followed by a memorial service on December 29th at 11am. Burial will follow at Lanark Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established in June’s name.

Survivors include his wife, Janice; his children: Terry Geirnaeirt of Jacksonville, IL., Amy Kumlien of Roscoe, IL, Kyle (Jami) Geirnaeirt of Washington, IL and Gretchen Geirnaeirt of Milledgeville; his grandchildren: Megan, Rachel and Emily Kumlien; Grace, Lilly, Owen and Dane Geirnaeirt; his sister, Michele (Steve) Wilson of Bloomington, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents; his toddler brother, Terry Lee Geirnaeirt; his daughter-in-law Jenny Geirnaeirt; and infant granddaughter Hope Marie Geirnaeirt Celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial was Thursday, December 30, in St. Mary Catholic Church in Polo. Burial was at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Kewanee. Memorials may be made in his memory to the Milledgeville Fire Department or St. Mary Catholic Church.

Shirley Ann Moothart, age 89, of Chadwick, IL, passed away on December 25, 2021 at Allure Nursing Home in Mt. Carroll, IL. A funeral service will be held at Law Jones Funeral Home in Lanark, IL, on Monday, January 10, 2022 at 10:30 am. Visitation will take place on Sunday, January 9, 2022 from 2pm to 4pm a Law Jones Funeral Home in Lanark, as well as one hour prior to Monday’s service. Shirley was born March 11, 1932, in Tampico, IL, the daughter of George and Loretta (Peterson) Tuft. She graduated from Sterling High School and immediately went to work as a dental assistant in Sterling. On March 30, 1952, Shirley married Donald Moothart. They celebrated 64 years of marriage before his passing in 2016. Upon marrying Donald, Shirley and he began their family in Lanark, as Shirley settled into the role of homemaker. Then in 1956, they purchased what would become their family farm for the next six-plus decades. The young couple placed tremen-

dous value in family life, as they raised their three girls. This love of all things family only seemed to strengthen as they were blessed with grandchildren and great grandchildren. Shirley and Donald were always an active couple. They tended to the time-intensive family farm, and always seemed to find time for socializing. They loved to go dancing, roller skating, and bowling, and would often gather with friends for a night of cards. As they grew older, many of these social events began to center around their grandchildren. Shirley and Donald attended every grandchild event and activities that they could. After her children were grown, Shirley began a career that would last more than twenty years, working for Jo Carroll Electric. In her down time, Shirley enjoyed cooking and baking; specifically, baking cakes for the Carroll County Fair, as well as sewing. Shirley will be dearly missed by her three daughters, Debra Stepp, Vickie (Jim) Zuck, and Penny (Mark) Swalve, all of Chadwick, IL; six grandchildren, Joshua (Kelly) Stepp, Nathan (Nicole) Stepp, Jason Zuck, Jenny (Carl) Lyons, Brock (Ashley) Swalve, and Courtney Swalve; nine great-grandchildren; and brothers-in-law, Gerald Moothart and Thomas Lehmann.
