MOUNT CARROLL – A former public school could become home to a new private school that organizers say will bring 1,500 mostly Chinese students and nearly 200 jobs to town. Nathaniel Hsieh is a Chicago immigration attorney whose holding companies, Tritent International Agriculture Inc. and Tritent International Corp., bought the former Mount Carroll K-12 school building at 300 S. Main St. in late August for $80,000. Hsieh plans to open the Reagan International Academy, a college prep school, in fall 2016 with about 150 students. He expects enroll-
ment to grow to 1,500 by fall 2018. The academy could bring nearly 200 administrative, teaching and staff jobs, Hsieh said. The students would be housed in renovated dorms at the former Shimer College, said Russ Simpson, the academy’s director of operations. Simpson also is chairman of the Campbell Center Board, which owns the Shimer campus, where the Campbell Center for Historic Preservation Studies also is located. The Campbell Center bought the 14-acre park-like campus in 1979, when Shimer College, which had occupied the location since 1854, moved to Waukegan. The academy will prepare students to attend U.S. universities. “We will bring students here who have graduated from high school in China,” Simpson said. “They will be here for two semesters and

they will learn what they need to pass the ACT and SAT before moving to the college curriculum. We will expand over the course of 4 or 5 years and we will bring high school, and eventually, junior high kids, here.” Although if would be geared toward Chinese students – Hsieh, who’s Chinese, “wants to be loyal to the Chinese students,” he said – “once this gets going, students can be from anywhere, as long as the visas are applied to the different countries.” Before the school can open, though, renovation work must be done at both buildings. “When the high school closed in 2005, it met all ADA requirements,” Simpson said. “It doesn’t meet
today’s ADA codes and compliance.” And “students will need a place to sleep, eat and they will need extracurricular activities.” Longtime local contractor Dennis Green will be the project manager. The southern section of the old school would be the cost that could be upward of $1 million, Simpson said. The cost to bring Shimer College up to code will be between $30 million and $40 million, to be paid by Chinese investors, Simpson said. The Campbell Center Board has agreed to give Hsieh 10 years to do so, and if the terms of the agreement are met, it will turn the campus over to Hsieh
for $1. (Because it is a nonsell the campus outright.) The second issue is getting students into the country. “Nate is an immigration attorney and he understands student visas and federal laws and he knows what needs to be done,” Simpson said. “That is what he is working on now behind the scenes.” The private school will not compete with the West Carroll School District because it will require a substantial tuition – $50,000 a year, he said, but “there will be partnership opportunities to share sporting events, and an opportunity to share classroom work.” Superintendent Craig Mathers agrees that the academy should not affect
district enrollment. “If the tuition costs remain at $50,000, it will not impact West Carroll as far as enrollment,” Mathers said. “West Carroll would look for opportunities to welcome the students into the community and look for ways to positively impact the educational environment.” Mount Carroll was chosen to house the academy in large part because of its rural location. “We wanted to keep kids out of the mainstream and large city talk,” Simpson said. “When Nate saw this campus, and he realized Ronald Reagan was from this area, he said, ‘This is the place and this is why we are here.’”

Midwest Arabian Horse Club 5th at national judging contest TULSA, Oklahoma — Representing the Midwest Arabian Horse Club, a group of Carroll County youth and their teammate from Chicago judged their way into the ribbons at the Arabian Nationals Horse Show in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in October. “The judging contest is one of the most prestigious in the nation, and is attended by 4H, FFA, AHA and collegiate teams from all over the country,” said Christy Charles, Mount Carroll veterinarian and the mother of Olivia. She said the team earned formance division by individually judging four halter classes and six performance classes. Then each had to compose and deliver from memory four sets of oral reasons on classes selected by the contest organizers.

Hello from beautiful, sunny Thomson, Illinois! What are your fondest memories of Christmas? My first and favorite memories of the holiday are of the excitement Christmas Eve provided. At 6 years old, I could never sleep on Christmas Eve, thinking of that special toy I was hoping to get. With 6 kids in the house, mom and dad didn’t get much sleep either on that magical night. We learned from the older siblings, 5 a.m. was the absolute earliest our dad would allow us to come down the steps to the living room, looking for that special gift from Santa. Minutes seemed like hours to us kids, while hours seemed like minutes to mom and dad. With even one or two presents each, our tree spilled out from beneath with boxes wrapped in holiday paper, big red bows, and Santa’s presents, which were never wrapped. Those first glimpses at 5 a.m. on Christmas day will always be my favorite memories. By 10 a.m., most out-oftown relatives were in our home for the day, and the women were cooking up a storm, while the guys were out pheasant hunting. My cousins and I had chores too, setting up the kids’ tables and chairs. As soon as the chores were done, all kids donned their coats for a full morning of football, sledding and playing with brand new toys. By 1 p.m., we were all sitting at our tables in the dining room, listening to Uncle Bud’s Christmas prayer. Together I bet we consumed hundreds of pounds of turkey, noodles and mashed potatoes. Every room in our home was decorated to the
hilt, and the visions of those Christmas days are as clear as the days they were made. Because of the Christmas spirit my parents had, I always search for places that are full of decorations when I shop for the holidays, and I cannot think of a better place to get my Christmas spirit going than to come right here to Thomson, Illinois, inside the Heirloom Market & Café. SHANNON – Norma B. Doran Meyers, 94, of Shannon passed away Nov. 23, 2015, at Presence St. Joseph’s in Freeport. She was born Oct. 30, 1921, the daughter of Clyde and Augusta Doran in Avon, South Dakota. Norma graduated from Avon High School in 1938 and attended South Dakota State University, where she received her teachat MaWhinny School in Avon, on the reservation for 2 years, before moving to Shannon. On Dec. 25, 1941, she married Morris (Riley) Meyers; he passed away Nov. 5, 1998. She worked at Micro Switch for 27 years until retiring in 1986. She also worked at John Lemon roll for about 12 years; and she taught at Elroy School for handicapped children. She enjoyed camping and traveled to all 50 states,
bowling, and would later get together monthly with her “non-bowling friends.” She was a member of the Lake Carroll Red Hats. Norma was a huge Chicago Bears and Chicago Cubs fan for all her life. She also had a special love for Arabian horses. She is survived by her daughter, Loxi (Tom) Hopkins of Davenport, Iowa; sons Barry (Jean) Meyers of Lake Carroll, Kelly (Denise) Meyers of Punta Gorda, Florida; daughter-in-law Mary Meyers of Freeport; George and Karen Kriske of Sacramento, California; nephew Ken Alexander, two nieces, Georgia Alexander, and Lexi (Rich) Etchberger, all of Shannon; 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren. Norma is preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother Bill Doran, sister-in-law Shirlee Alexander, son Riley, and grandsons Tony Hopkins and Rob Meyers. Funeral services were at Bethel United Methodist Church in Shannon on Saturday, Nov. 28, with the

Pearlanna recognized for dynamic, engaging yearbook PEARL CITY – Pearl City High School’s yearbook program has been named a 2015 Jostens’ National Yearbook Program of Excellence. The National Yearbook Program of Excellence recognizes engaging yearbooks that of the student body while helping students develop 21st century skills such as communication, collaboration, and information and communication technologies (ICT) literacy. “I’m tremendously proud of the kids,” said Brian Greene, Pearl City High School’s yearbook adviser. “This is recognized for this honor in
my 10 years as adviser and to do it with our smallest staff in the past 10 years is fantastic.” The Pearlanna, Pearl City High School’s award winning yearbook program was led by editors Dani Lee and Halle Fransen, along with staff members Sam Kempel, Katy Musser, Anicka Stultz and Zaylinn Grossenbacher. All but Grossenbacher, who is now an editor alongside fellow senior Bronte Wright, graduated in May. The Award was presented to the Pearlanna staff for creating an inclusive yearbook, generating school engagement, and successfully managing the yearbook creation process. The yearbook program has received a plaque to display in the
yearbook area and a banner to display in the school gym so the entire school community will be aware of the outstanding achievement. “Yearbooks connect students’ hearts and minds to the school story, school year experiences, and the community to memorialize moments that matter,” said Murad Velani, chief “We understand that a great yearbook program does not just happen, and we are dedicated to helping schools, yearbook advisers and students to strengthen their programs by providing state of the art tools, resources and best practices that support the development and creation of award-winning yearbooks.”

s we just got done with the annual Thanksgiving Day feast, the American Farm Bureau Federation’s 30th annual informal price survey of classic items found on the Thanksgiving Day dinner table indicates the average cost of this year’s feast for 10 is $50.11, a 70-cent increase from last year’s average of $49.41. The big ticket item – a 16-pound turkey – came in at a total of $23.04. That’s roughly $1.44 per pound, an increase of less than 9 cents per pound, or a total of $1.39 per whole turkey, compared to 2014. The AFBF survey shopping list includes turkey,
toes, rolls with butter, peas, cranberries, a relish tray of carrots and celery, pumpkin pie with whipped cream, and beverages of coffee and milk, all in quantities suf-

LANARK — Carroll County Crime Stoppers requests the public’s assistance in solving several vehicle burglaries being investigated by law The Carroll County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a burglary to a business north of Lanark on state Route 73. The burglary occurred during the overnight hours of Nov. 19. There was no forced
entry. Items taken include a 2500 psi pressure washer with a Honda motor, a Schumacher 200 amp battery charger, two black game cameras and numerous miscellaneous tools. Information leading to an arrest could earn the caller a reward of up to $1,000. Budget impasse is extortion
The State of Illinois’ budget impasse is not only unexplainable,unacceptable, and unjust, but it is having a direct impact on the communities we live in. Effective Dec. 1, Riverview Center domestic violence services will be virtually eliminated and sexual assault services will
This is due to the State of Illinois owing Riverview Center nearly $100,000 for services provided July through November. I urge our state leaders and our representatives to pass SB2046 and begin to heal the deep wounds that Governor Rauner, Speaker Madigan, Representatives Stewart and Smiddy, and Senators Anderson and Bivins have created for our most vulnerable residents. Please contact your Representatives and let them know that politics cannot come before people. I cannot help but wonder if our representatives were not receiving a paycheck if there would be a budget in place. This past year, Riverview Center provided 3,000 advocacy and counseling/ therapy services to survivors of abuse in Jo Daviess and Carroll County. These services to adults and children who have been beaten and/or raped, are on the chopping block for our representatives. There is no excuse for this impasse, other than pure political extortion. They tell us it is because they want to clean up Illinois politics, or to reduce expenses, or to reform unions and workers compensation, or to remove career politicians from power. Whatever the reason or whoever is to blame, is not directly related to funding domestic violence or sexual assault services. It is those in power who are holding our tax dollars hostage to move forward their own agendas. Please urge your representatives to pass SB2046 TODAY and fund services at the FY15 level. With Thanksgiving come and gone, I am very thankful for the wonderful volunteers who have made Twice-Sold Tales possible. They help customers locate books, price and shelve books, dust and straighten shelves, create displays, take requests, answer questions, clean and process donations, and make sure someone is there to wait on customers. Without their assistance, the bookstore would have died a long time ago. With their assistance, we have raised $5,089 since January this year, and $22,502 since May of 2011, all of which goes to support the Lanark Public Library’s collections and programs.
