By LYNNETTE FORTH For Prairie Advocate MOUNT CARROLL — A rate hike for Mount Carroll water uses was approved at Nov. 10 council meeting. “The end result will cost people about $2,� Alderman Tom Charles said. “It will go into a separate fund and used for only water and sewer.�

Alderman Mike Risko added, “I have nightmares about the sewer plant, because it’s old and needs work.

We are extending the life of what we have. I think we have to do the gradual increase. Grimm reported on the idea of having an ice rink at Point Rock Park. “I have researched the cost, and it would not be more than $500 to get liner every couple of years.�

The issue will be placed on the next meeting agenda.

Lou Schau reported on the work completed on the stone house project, informing the council that work has stopped for the year, because of the weather.

The project has been driven by an anonymous donation of $100,000, so no city or tax money was used. “We appreciate all of the support and volunteer labor,� Schau said.

Cuckler noted that about 110 bricks have been sold.

Correspondence included a letter stating that the Girl Scouts will be selling cookies from Jan. 9 to 30.

Some of the activities planned include a table-top Christmas Tree auction, church suppers, visits with Santa and Mrs. Claus, business open houses, a live nativity, puppet shows, ornament decorating, Christmas cocktail concoctions in the pubs, the tree-lighting ceremony, horse-drawn wagon rides, and the lighted parade.

Entry forms for the lighted parade will be accepted through Dec. 1, and there are still tabletop trees available to decorate for the silent auction. Any business, organization or individual may pick up a tree, from the Chamber, to decorate and donate for the auction. The trees will be on display Nov. 24 through Dec. 6 for silent auction bidding.

Savanna Council approves loan for used ladder truck

By MICHAEL MILLER For Prairie Advocate SAVANNA — The Savanna Fire Department is looking for a used ladder truck, thanks to securing approval to seek a loan.

The department’s current truck is 43 years old and has been failing inspections, Fire Chief Shawn Picolotti told the City Council at its Nov. 12 meeting. A new truck is nearly $1 million; Picolotti said he plans to spend no more than $150,000 using a zero percent loan.

If such a loan could not be secured, the bank will do a 20-year loan, guaranteed for 5 years at 3.5 percent.

The council also heard a recommendation from the Finance Committee to consider a request from Moring Disposal for a 2 percent monthly rate increase, which would take the rate from $9.15 to $9.33, to start with the billing periods in September to October.

Moring also requested a 10 percent increase in fees for the city transfer station, for the recycling containers which would then go from $35.00 to $38.50, and for trash containers which would go from $38.00 to $41.80, to be effective Nov. 1.

Two homes, 123 Hill and 608 Cooley, remain, and the mayor recommended using funds for a prospective sign in front of City Hall to help pay for their demolition, which should be done before winter. The council approved the recommendation.

The council also passed a resolution asking Target Corp. reconsider its decision to close the Clinton, Iowa store. The mayor said Savanna needs to support the region, and with the opening of the Thomson

prison, that may show the company people to the area.

The council also: Passed an ordinance allowing the disposal of old water meters.

Approved giving city employees a $200 year-end bonus.

In closed session, the council elected to send the contract with the Fraternal Order of Police back to the Collective Bargaining Committee to review several items and for more negotiation.

LANARK — Several area foundations are cultivating and providing permanent resources for local programs that improve the quality of life for everyone in the community.

“Rural towns committed to successful growth and revitalization share a number of community elements. Having a community foundation is probably the most common and important of those,” said Floyd Roberts, chairman of the new Lanark Area Community Foundation.

LACF is not city-owned or politically controlled. It is an independent organization managed by a carefully selected board of directors. The seven founding board members have been elected for 1-, 2- or 3-year terms to start, but will change to all seats being 3-year terms after 2017. This will provide an annual average turnover of about one third to provide fresh ideas and viewpoints.

Legal, permanent resident immigrants, just as U.S. citizens, are eligible for these payments, should they become unable to work. Note: SSI is not paid for with SS taxes, but Social Security come out of the SS Trust Fund.

Most people receiving SSI have never worked, nor worked long enough to be eligible for SSDI, which is not the same as SSI. SS was never a retirement plan, but taxes on the working that are paid to the retirees. My parents’ SS taxes paid for my grandparents, my taxes paid for my parents, and now our children our paying for ours.

SS is not like a 401K or Roth; one’s SS taxes are not “put away” for the individual. Over half the funds on employers and interest on the Trust Fund.

This writing is not a defense of Democrats (not my party), but in defense of the facts so the citizenry can have informed and intelligent discussions on the SS issue, which deeply concern me. I applaud Mr. Outwork for his concerns and desire to inform the citizenry, but his facts are not facts and serve more to obscure than enlighten.

Board sets aside $226,000 to buy Health Department site

By TONY CARTON For Prairie Advocate MOUNT CARROLL — In a move to save money, and at the recommendation of the Carroll County Board of Health, the County Board voted Nov. 6 to set aside $226,000 to buy the building now housing the Health Department.

After 8 years rent-free in its current site, the department has been paying $24,000 a year in rent the last 2 years, prompting a study of its options.

In October, Carroll County Public Health Administrator Craig Beintema presented the county board with three options to house the department: buy the current building; buy and renovate another building; or build a brand-new building.

According to the study: To build a new building

would cost about $179 per square foot, so a 1,720-square-foot building would cost $344,020; a 2,315-square-foot building $450,228; and a 4,000-squarefoot building $751,000. Those numbers include buying a 1-acre site and the estimated moving costs. The current building is 3,700 square feet.

To buy and renovate a different building, including professional fees, a contingency budget and moving expenses, would be about $260,000.

After negotiations with the landlord, it was determined that to buy and renovate the department’s current location would cost about $226,000 if the purchase is made in January, plus about $40,000 in renovations and updates, including the furnace, windows, entry doors and room divisions, over the next 5 years.

Vehicle trade-ins considered by Eastland CUSD 308 LANARK— At the Nov. 12 regular meeting of the Eastland Board of Education, the Board heard a first reading of recommended transportation fleet trade-ins and purchases for the 2015-16 school year. Action authorizing Superintendent Mark Hansen to advertise for bids will be scheduled for the December meeting.

The Transportation Committee is recommending four as follows: Priority 1 – Trade-in bus 14 for double-capacity mini-bus with wheelchair lift for an estimated cost of $50,000; Priority 2 – Trade-in bus 16 for white, multi-function activity bus, estimated to cost $45,000; Priority 3 – Trade-in the Chevy Cruze 21 for a comparable car at an estimated cost of $15,000; Priority 4 – Trade-in Van 24 for comparable van, estimated to cost $22,000.

The estimated total cost if all four priority items are approved would be $132,000.

Hansen suggested that the decision on how many of these priorities to fund would depend on projections for 2015-16 State Aid for transportation, and input from staff on use of white activity buses.

This information will be provided in a report prior to the board taking action in December.

Board input Members were asked for input on Principal Monika Burkholder’s recommendation for Baccalaureate and Graduation dates and times. Baccalaureate will be held May 17, and graduation will be

held May 22.

Board members reviewed the results of the 1 percent sales tax referendum from the Nov. 4 election, and the timelines for candidates for board elections 4 years.

Incumbents Lorrie Heeren and Karl Henze have announced that they will run for re-election.

Connie Lower and Jan Golden have indicated that they will not.

To serve on a board of education in Illinois, a person must be a U.S. citizen and registered voter 18 or older, and must have been a resident of the territory of the district for at least 1 year preceding the election.

The board approved publication of the Fall District Newsletter, which will be published digitally and posted on the website, and

also will be published in the Prairie Advocate. The newsletter highlights district initiatives, programming and student achievements.

The board also heard a presentation on the 2014 School Report Cards, which also are posted on the district website.

The board approved a bid from Prowant Construction of Lanark for the demolition and disposal of the bleachers on the stage in the contest gym at Eastland Elementary School in Shannon. The total cost will be $2,879.

New business The board heard a report and levy recommendation from the Board Finance Committee, then approved a resolution regarding the estimated amounts necessary to be levied for the year 2014 of $6,347,090.

This represents a 4.6 percent increase over the previous levy not including bond payments – a 3.8 percent increase if you include all taxes extended last year to those requested for next year. The estimate is that the tax rate will decline from the current 4.22 to a rate of 4.13.

The levy will be approved at the December board meeting.

Principals Darcie Feltmeyer and Burkholder made brief reports on Parent-Teacher conferences held on Oct. 27-28. Of the 294 students that are enrolled in grades K-6 at Eastland Elementary, teachers were able to hold conferences with parents of 293 of them. Feltmeyer attributed the remarkable success of the conferences to the teachers efforts, starting with early registrations in July, follow-ups at grade level meetings, and personal phone

calls 2 weeks out to parents who were not yet scheduled for a conference.

Burkholder reported that seventh- and eighth-grade teachers had full schedules of conferences for both days. Conferences for students in grades 9-12 were limited, continuing a trend of low participation in conferences for parents of high school students.

The board approved the Sports Boosters request for sponsorship of a non-school Youth Basketball Camp that will be held at Eastland Elementary School in Shannon in December and January. They also to add cross country as a junior high sport.

Hansen has developed a Sports Interest Survey to solicit input from students to project future levels of participation before the administrators are ready to make a recommendation on the proposed expansion. More information will be presented in December.

The board approved renewal of Workers Compensation Insurance through QBE effective Dec. 15, at an annual cost of $34,462.59.

Superintendents’ report Hansen shared information on manufacturing jobs open and projected over the next 5 years.

The information was provided by employers who have been working with the Whiteside Area Career Center to improve programs that prepare students for jobs in the regional workforce He also shared information on threats to funding posed by proposals to shift pension costs to local districts and SB16, the bill proposing to reduce state funding provided to Eastland and other districts in the state and region.

Eastland celebrates Veterans Day with activities, essays Students and staff of the Eastland Schools recognized and honored local veterans Nov. 11. At Eastland Elementary in Shannon, cafeteria staff, K-6 art students, and students involved in the Sixth-Grade Literacy Council helped to decorate and serve the Veterans’ Breakfast, and all K-6 students participated in the Veterans’ Day ceremony.

Cafeteria staff prepared and served breakfast to 55 guests.

During breakfast at Eastland Elementary, kindergarten students presented veterans with pictures and thank you’s they colored in advance. The walls at Eastland were papered with student artwork thanking veterans.

After breakfast, students and guests participated in a ceremony in the Eastland Elementary gym.

Colors were presented by veterans from Lanark-Shannon VFW Post 4857 and American Legion Post 357, followed by an invocation by Chaplain Don Mantzke, and the Pledge of Allegiance. The sixthgrade band performed, and students sang tributes. First- and third-graders recited poems, and the fourth grade did a presentation and demonstration on the proper folding and care of the a play dramatizing the creation of taps, and the ceremony ended with the playing of taps.

At Eastland Jr/Sr High School in Lanark, social studies classes Veterans Day, and all students watched video tributes to veterans.

Seventeen students presented audio essays, submitted for judging to the Voice of Democracy contest.

Two are published below. These selected essays not only recognize the students’ efforts, but also serve as a tribute to our veterans. The day ended with the playing of taps.

Where My Heart Belongs

Ever since I was little, I knew where my heart belonged. My heart belonged to the United States military forces. Growing up, I knew that I was expected to enlist, even if it didn’t interest me. But the strange thing is, I have always felt like I wanted to.

A lot of kids my age don’t quite know what they want to do after high school. They all seem scared of the darkness and of the unknown, but I know that the military will offer me a bigger and brighter future.

There are a few reasons why I am certain I want to join the military. that I should always look forward to our nation’s future. The other two reasons are because of the people I’ve met and their stories.

West Carroll to keep Thomson building open – for now

By MICHAEL MILLER For Prairie Advocate MOUNT CARROLL — The West Carroll School Board narrowly passed a motion to keep the Intermediate School building in Thomson open until July.

After intense discussion at its Nov. 12 meeting, the board voted 4-3 to keep the building open, with a cap of $50,000 to be spent on

maintaining that facility.

President Mike Highland, John Brigham, Jessica Edwards, and Jerry Anderson voted for, Beverly Kilpatrick, Dawn Rath, and Mark Klein voting against.

The matter will be revisited after Thomson prison opens and it is learned how many students will be added to the district’s enrollment.

The building will remain open

and continue to be utilized for plays by the drama department, as well as for sporting activities as a practice area. It will also be available to the Thomson Sesquicentennial Committee for use in that celebration.

West Carroll has seen a “fairly into the district in light of the prison opening, and it may be necessary to hire more instructors if the trend

continues, Superintendent Craig Mathers said.

Mathers asked the board to consider many factors when evaluating the building, including how many new students West Carroll will receive, how long the roof and the boiler will last, the fact that the locker rooms are completely noncompliant with regulations, and whether it is better to build on existing buildings or

repair existing structures. He also provided board members with in their decision making process, including the 2014 utility costs of $60,283 and repair costs of $10,383.

The board also passed a tentative tax levy, with a public hearing on the matter to occur in December.

If passed, the tax levy would be at an estimated rate of $5.80.

From the very beginning of the United States, our soldiers were fighting for the rights we were promised in the Declaration of Independence, which states, “that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the veterans we would not have all of those freedoms we take for granted today.

Those who are family of a veteran or soldier, or that are themselves a soldier or veteran, are incredibly grateful for these rights. They know the struggles, made in order to preserve these freedoms. They are to thank for these privileges that we have today that make our lives so much better.

Veterans are, and will always be, a symbol and a reminder of what we are and have been freedoms of every man, woman, and child, but more importantly

them. These men know that this is their destiny and how they want to spend their lives from the start. They know that they would country and their brothers than do anything else.

They come back and show the characteristics every person wishes they could perfect.

These men and women are symbols of our freedom and what every person should strive to become. They are a reminder to us of the love and sacrifices that people have made for the simple belief that in this country, everyone should have a life that they create and all have equal opportunities.

Lastly, I believe that Veterans are the best role models for future generations. Forget the celebrities and the reality TV stars of today, veterans have all the traits that everyone should strive to achieve.

They are brave, proud, loyal, and so much more. They continue to even in the shadow of defeat they will persevere. They are tough and have great self-discipline, shown in the months of training they receive.

They are pulled from their

family, but they get through it because they know that what they are doing is bigger than a larger cause and they accept the hardships that come along with this. They are what everyone wishes they could be and they do things we all wish that we could do. Although it is not all glamorous, they also go through the hardest times anyone could through and that truly shows their character. They are truly the kind of people that have perfected the character that I, and hopefully many teenagers will work to achieve someday.

The importance and impact that veterans have on us is shown every day. We take for granted being able to go to school or going to church, but the fact is that we would not have these freedoms without our veterans.

They are role models not only for today’s children but also for everyone. I feel that veterans and soldiers possess the characteristics we should all strive to perfect someday. They are also a reminder to us about how far we have come and the sacrifices that have been made to get where we are today.

Anvil stolen in Morrison from Heritage Museum

Hearing today on Sabula bridge improvements SAVANNA — A open house to answer questions and gather comments on proposed safety improvements to the Sabula bridge is being held from 1 to 6 p.m. today at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 318 Chicago Ave. The U.S. Route 52/state Route 64 Over the Mississippi Bridge Environmental Assessment is the result of a study to replace the existing two-lane bridge on U.S. Route 52 over the Mississippi River between Savanna and Sabula, Iowa, and the reconstruction of state Route 84 at the north end of Savanna, from Randolph Street on the south to about 1,000 feet north of the bridge structure.

The bridge, built in 1932, is rapidly approaching the end of its useful life.

The assessment includes information on the project’s purpose and need, proposed plans and alternatives, and potential effects on environmental resources such as wetlands, wildlife and cultural resources.

The preferred alternative, reached after about 2 years of study, will be presented at the hearing, and there will be a continuous PowerPoint presentation, with attendees encouraged to review and comment on the purpose and need for the improvements; preferred alternative; social, economic and environmental impacts; and proposed mitigation strategies.

The assessment can be viewed now at www.idot.illinois.gov/ projects/us-52-il-64-over-the-mississippi-river or at the Federal Highway Administration Division be available for viewing and comment at the public hearing, where oral and written comments will be taken and will be formally included as part of the public record.

Conrad and Caralee Aschenbrenner, after learning that our last name was Wyeth, presented us with an old Wyeth Brothers medicine bottle.

Thinking back, Caralee gave me a much greater gift as well. She

gave me a sense of what it was like to live in this region in its early days.

In 1991 we brought our family west to the small town of Harper.

Through Caralee’s writing in her column, “Please Don’t Quote Me,” which appeared weekly in the Prairie Advocate newspaper, I learned so much! It was not the kind of boring names, places and dates type of history I remember from school. But rather, she painted a vivid picture of the daily lives our predecessors lived.

Through her we have come to know those people, their joys and struggles. As I adjusted to the culture shock that accompanied our move from the city, Caralee’s writings prompted me to consider how life was for the pioneer women who came west with their families and to appreciate

all they endured. How isolated they must have felt out in the open prairie.

When our well pump quit, I wondered how these women could have coped with such hardship. Somehow my adjustment was eased by reading of these women who had endured so much more than I could imagine.

After purchasing the Stengel house in Lanark, Caralee’s writ-

ings connected me to the families who built and occupied our house before us. I learned how the house survived the great cyclone of 1898, how my kitchen may have been a building moved from down the hill and attached to the back of the house. She had taught me about life, farming, perseverance, and so much more.

Caralee will live on through her gifts both great and small. She will live on in the hearts and minds of all who knew her, and in those of us who only knew her through the gifts she shared with us.

Thank you, Caralee, for these gifts - both great and small - given to me by a woman I never met, but one I will not forget!

Obituaries Caralee Elizabeth Aschenbrenner

Caralee Elizabeth Aschenbrenner, 82, of Lanark, passed away Saturday, Nov. 7, 2014, at Good Samaritan Center in Mount Carroll.

Caralee was born at home on Jan. 13, 1932 to Donald and Luella Brown (Perry Baxter).

She grew up helping her parents publish The Advertiser, taking naps on the freshly folded newspapers.

She was a graduate of Lanark High School and was the Fireman’s Ball Queen in 1950.

After high school, Caralee worked at the A&P grocery store and Commonwealth Edison until she met Conrad Aschenbrenner, a wear Bermuda shorts! They had a country wedding on July 10,1955 at Yellow Creek Church in Kent.

Caralee became a full-time mom, chauffeur, room mother, seamstress, cookie baker, and overall good multitasker when their two daughters, Cara Lizabeth and Margaret Nell, came along.

She and Conrad were avid antique lovers, and picked barns and old houses long before it became fashionable. They spent many years refurbishing the old house on West Lanark Avenue. It was always the neighborhood gathering place for kids and kickball fun.

Caralee loved Lanark and its history, so much so that she talked Conrad into opening the Lanark Museum. It was supported by local donations and a gift shop that sold thousands of pot holders made by her and her mother on the dining room Almost 30 years ago, Caralee started writing a history-based column for The Prairie Advocate in Lanark. Her writing and artistic

talents were often seen in “Please Don’t Quote Me,” and in her book of the same name. Even with her eyesight failing, she recently proclaimed she still had ideas for articles in her head. Her research took her far and wide. She and Conrad made many friends and had countless adventures in her quest for history.

Most recently, Caralee was a proud member of Lanark’s Sesquicentennial Book Committee.

Writing about Lanark and its history was always great fun, and working with such capable people was a joy for her. She was both thrilled and humbled at their dedication of the book to her. This past year, Caralee was involved in documenting and writing the new historical marker in Lanark about inventor Charles Cotta.

Another one of Caralee’s passions was her family. She especially relished being grandma to Karl and John. She and Conrad never missed a beat switching from dress up and ing. Great-grandsons Ben and Kam were frequent guests at Grandma’s big table for macaroni and cheese.

Caralee will be missed by her family, and she will miss Lanark.

Surviving family include her husband, Conrad, daughters Cara (Lonnie) Prowant of Lanark, Maggie (Mark Williams) of Princeton, grandsons Karl (Sarah) Prowant and John Prowant, and great-grandsons Benjamen and Kamden Prowant, all of Lanark..

Other family are Thelma Fairbanks and family of Winchester, Wisconsin, Annie Aschenbrenner and family of Rochester, and Carol (Jim) McCurdy and family of Monmouth.

Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Lanark Methodist Church, with graveside services at 11:30 a.m. at Lanark Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Lanark Public Library and Heritage Center.

Darrell Frank Dietsch Darrell Frank Dietsch, 72, of Bloomington, formerly of Milledgeville, passed away Sunday, Nov. 16, 2014 at his home.

A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m.

Thursday, Nov. 20 at the Community Baptist Church in Milledgeville. Visitation will be held two hours prior to the memorial service.

He was born July 2, 1942, in Fort Madison, IA to Doyle and Mae Schwartz Dietsch. Darrell served in the U.S. Army from 19601962; serving one of those years in Korea. He married Dixie K. Zemke on November 16, 1963. She survives.

Also surviving are his children, Darlene (Bill) Speers, Daniel (Carla) Dietsch, Dawn (Jerry Shoblom) Dietsch, and David (Gayle) Dietsch; 9 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great grandchildren; one brother, Doyle (Kathy) Dietsch; and many nieces and nephews.

Darrell was preceded in death by his parents, 3 sisters, and 3 brothers.

After many years of farming, Darrell went to work at Zemke Trucking where he hauled livestock for 24 years. Before retiring he was employed by Rolling Hills Progress Center. Darrell was member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Bloomington and a member of the American Legion.

Memorials may be made to the family or to the American Legion in Milledgeville, IL.

Years passed, and I became reacquainted with Merle when my wife and I purchased a home on Michigan Avenue in 2002. Merle was recently retired and took his morning and afternoon walks past our house.

“We had a good number of conversations these past 12 years.

He encouraged me to run for the City Council several years before I

did. Savanna’s had many good and memorable residents and leaders throughout its history.

“Let the record state that Merle was ‘second to none’ when it came to generosity, honesty and pursuing moral and just solutions,” Law said. “He didn’t purport to have the answer. He analyzed and proposed remedies and outcomes that otherwise would have been missed.

From the beginning, Caralee Aschenbrenner was a Prairie Advocate

By TOM KOCAL Editor Prairie Advocate A dear soul, friend of the community, and huge part of the Prairie Advocate, passed away last week. Caralee Aschenbrenner was a historian of Lanark and northwest Illinois, but especially Lanark, her hometown. Caralee loved Lanark.

Her weekly column began hit the streets. In fact, Caralee is credited with re-naming The Quote Me column.

With our customers telling us they wanted more news the name and direction of The Advertiser in 1985, when in the column written by Caralee, she inadvertently came up with our new name. The article explained that PDQ Me was “to be a column of reminiscences and comments based on information accumulated by design or accident as a result of a long abiding interest in history.”

Caralee ended the column with this: “Thanks to Tom and Lynn Kocal and the people of northwest Illinois, past, present and future for making this opportunity and for being such a great place to live and to be a Prairie Advocate.”

PDQ Me has been a part of this newspaper’s growth for the past 29 years, and proves that “what goes around, comes around.” Caralee’s parents were Don and Luella Brown, founders of The Advertiser.

While the Prairie Advocate moved forward with new tech-

nology, Caralee was always “old school.” From handset type, to phototypesetters, to computers, Lynn and I grasped this new technology with open minds.

But Caralee would have none 1985, to her last, published Sept.

10, the tool of her trade was a good old-fashioned typewriter, or hand-written. I loved her artwork, which often accompanied her articles.

Hand-delivered, too. That was the best part. Caralee didn’t email a word doc, she brought every week for 29 years, we had the opportunity to chat with her, sometimes with Conrad. We will miss those visits.

I loved getting little snippets of information from her, too. Whenever she saw an item in a magazine or newspaper that she had gleaned because she thought it would be an interesting follow-up article, or a recipe, or gardening tip, she’d drop that off, too. Then we’d chit chat about it, one thing leading to another. I still have a few of those bits of Caralee memorabilia.

Caralee loved her hometown. Everything she did was for its benefit. She always shared her ideas with an open heart.

During our last visit, Caralee told Lynn and I that she still had many more ideas for her column.

But time ran out for the dear girl.

Take a cue from Caralee. If you have a dream, live it, don’t just keep it stored away in your head.

If you have a story you wish to share, tell it. Don’t let time run out on you.

Merle believed not only in supporting his community but in giving back to the community of Savanna. He had a unique knack for involving others in service to our community. Our community is richer for his service and his gift to get others involved as well. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was fortunate to have served with Merle on the Savanna City Council, the Savanna Train Car Committee, and Carroll County Housing Authority, all of which he talked me into joining. Besides I knew Merle to be a wonderful family man and friend to all who had the privilege to know him. It is a sad time for his family and those who knew and loved him, but his legacy will live on in the many projects and activities he supported,â&#x20AC;?

Carroll County Jail Meal BID SPECIFICATIONS

The Carroll County Jail is accepting sealed bids to provide meals for the inmates.

The inmates receive breakfast, lunch, and an evening meal.

The evening meal must be a hot meal. The inmates must receive at least 2000 calories a day and they must have something other than water to drink for each meal. Inmates must have 8 ounces of milk for breakfast and the option of 8 ounces of milk for the evening meal.

Frozen dinners are acceptable as the hot meal. They must be at least 14.5 ounces. A variety of not less than six different entrées must be offered. Frozen dinners can be heated at the jail. If the bidder plans to provide the hot meal in some other fashion, they must prepare and cook the meals.

Food must be delivered to the county jail within 48 hours of orders phoned in by jail staff.

Bids must be sealed and labeled ‘Sealed Bid for Jail Meals.’

Bids must be received by the Carroll County Clerk’s Office no later than 4:00 p.m., Friday, November 28, 2014.

The length of service will be for two years beginning December 1, 2014.

The Carroll County Board reserves the right to reject any or all bids.
