Saturday chores on the Homestead

By Marc Gravert Saturdays were always the best day to catch up on chores. There were lots of chores to do every day, like feeding and watering all the animals.

But Saturday was left for all the jobs that only needed doing every so often.

This was also the best day because the kids didn’t have to go to school.

The kids, on the other hand, weren’t as excited about it as Dad was.

Children on farms were a vital source of labor, another reason so many families had a good amount of children. These chores were ones that the kids could do without parental supervision. In the summer, it was weeding the garden, which was something the kids hated as much as anything. In the house, it was cleaning day, and Mom and the girls took care of this; nothing the girls liked more than cleaning day - NOT! The boys didn’t have it any easier. There were always calf pens to clean, buildings to paint, not to mention the hog house needing cleaning. The pigs may need to be castrated or weaned.

That was always a fun day.

And when you had a lot of livestock around, there was always a Water tanks and feed troughs were always in need of cleaning and repair, along with sheds needing bedding to keep the animals warm and dry on those cold winter nights.

One of my memories growing up was cleaning the dairy barn gutters. We had a litter carrier in our barn. A litter carrier was like a long, large bucket on a chain hoist system, suspended from a track that ran behind the cows in the barn. You you scooped the manure into it with a shovel. Once full, you hoisted it up into position to empty.

Our litter carrier emptied out into a cattle yard west of the barn.

There was a cable that went from the barn out to a pole, for the carrier to travel on. First you attach a heavy twine string to the trip mechanism, then you would push as hard as you could to get the carrier as far out as possible. When it reached the end, you gave a yank on the string and trip the bucket to dump it. Pull it back inside, and start all over again.

During the winter, the pile would get very large as the manure would freeze every day. By spring, the pile was so large you never thought you would be able to get it all hauled. As the manure was hauled and May, the manure would still be frozen near the middle of the pile!

One of the other Saturday jobs always dreaded by my father was cleaning the chicken house. Now you say, that doesn’t sound so bad; chickens are small, and so is the pooh. There’s just something about

chicken manure that is nasty. It is high in nitrogen, so it smells bad, for one thing. And for some reason, it makes you itch, and that is much worse if the chickens have lice.

I never forget the story my father told me about one Saturday he had to clean the hen house. He had backed the manure spreader up to the chicken house door with the team of horses. He brought the driving lines in the chicken house and wrapped them around a nail inside the door. He then began pitching manure into the manure spreader.

When the load was about full, he turned to throw a shovel full on the load, only to discover the team and spreader was gone. The team had taken off without him! A new beginning

I wanted to share my appreciation to every voter who listened to the merits of Liberty Legislation during my write-in campaign for Congress.

Restoring American Liberty and the Rule of the People over their government is a challenge, as instead we are ruled by our government today. Herein lies the cause of every problem in America, as our system of government remains broken and barely resembles our Constitution that had served us so well, our departure from which continues to drag the nation down.

Carroll County snow removal equipment doesn’t make the grade Voter turnout high in county; no election problems

By TONY CARTON For The Prairie Advocate MOUNT CARROLL – At the Carroll County board regular meeting on Thursday, Nov. 6, County Engineer Kevin Vandendooren presented information on equipment purchases for the Highway Department.

He is asking the board to consider the purchase of a motor grader to be used mainly for snow removal, but that would also help with road repair during the warmer months. He said a grader of the size needed would cost $215- $250,000 and would additionally need an attached V-plow.

“I don’t have any method of paying for a grader is what it boils down to,” said Vandendooren.

“Short of borrowing money, if I

spend $250K now I won’t be able to make payroll in January.”

Board Chair Kevin Reibel said he was hoping for something affordable and that he did not want to short change the capital projects looming in the proposed budget.

“Maybe we could borrow the money and I could pay out $50K a year for seven years and we would have it paid off, but that is going to keep reducing my end of the year funds,” Vandendooren said. “We are not generating enough revenue to do what I’ve already got in there and so to add any more to it; it’s just not there.”

He cited a number of cost increases facing the department including a thirty percent increase in the cost of road salt and ten percent for the oils used for seal coating.

“My current motor grader just doesn’t have enough horses to handle the big snows,” said Vandendooren.”

Board member Paul Hartman suggested employing the services of township and/or farm workers for

snow removal, but Vandendooren reminded him that the townships and farmers with equipment cost in the area of $200 per hour.

Board member Payette pointed out that while $250K is a lot of money; the last grader the county purchased has lasted 50 years.

“Sooner or later our equipment needs to be updated,” Payette said.

“I don’t want another winter like last year. It is unacceptable to take a week to open a road. We’ve got to keep our county roads open and we shouldn’t have to count on anybody else to do it for us. There is a certain amount of responsibility that we bear to take care of our equipment.

If we have to buy a new grader every 50 years then we should do a better job of setting aside some money for that.”

Vandendooren said he does not like buying equipment.

“It it’s taxpayer dollars I want them put into roads and bridges,” he said. “The only equipment that I feel we have to have is our tandems and

the end loader because they haul the rock around and treat the roads in the winter, but the last time we bought a tandem was three years ago and we should be buying another one now.

I’ve got a twenty year old tandem in the garage that is going to go out this winter. Two years from now I will have two of them over 20 years old. I don’t foresee us replacing any of this equipment in the next three years. I’m not getting enough local tax dollars to buy equipment just because of operating expenses.”

He suggested the simplest method would be for the board to return his department’s health insurance costs to the general fund as was done previously.

“Another solution would be that I do less preventative maintenance work on the roads, but that means they are going to degrade faster,” Vandendooren said. “Another solution would be layoffs.”

At the suggestion of County Administrator, the board agreed to research options and tabled discussion of equipment purchases for

the Highway Department until its second November meeting.

Vandendooren also requested changes to the 2014-2015 budget price increases and a change in bridge reimbursement. The board approved his requests.

The County Clerk and Recordvoter turnout for the midterm elections with no problems.

County Clerk Brian Woessner said his offices did implement Sunday voting during the last weekend before Election Day, Nov. 4, and the event realized twenty voters.

Woessner said he was surprised at the volume of that Sunday turnout and would consider continuing the practice in the future.

The board tabled transfers amounting to $3,278.46 until its next meeting at the request of the fers amounting to $51,362.28 as per budget.

FirstNet broadband network Following 9/11, the public safety MOUNT CARROLL – Carroll County Emergency Services personnel learned about a network that will enable faster, more informed and better coordinated response to incidents that may change the way law enforcement personnel and public service agencies operate.

Bill Springer of the Illinois Terrorism Task Force, and FirstNet project system architect, gave a presentation Thursday at the Carroll County Farm Bureau.

“In 2012, federal law created provisions to fund and govern a national public safety broadband network, called FirstNet,” Springer said. “Cellular data has doubled every year for the last several years, and this has caused commercial carriers (Verizon, AT&T, US Cellular, etc.) to start seeing capacity issues.

“In emergency situations, there is no way to give priority cellular usage to emergency services. The goal is to work with public safety in each county in Illinois to help them understand their communication needs so it can be applied to the future of FirstNet.” The plan is to host three regional conferences across the state in the near future.Springer said the FirstNet network will be a single, nationwide long-term evolution network that will make it easier for public safety users to communicate during emergencies. The new network will provide faster access to information and wireless coverage where law enforcement personnel and emergency services need it most.

The Tri-County Opportunities Council reported that applications for LIHEAP and weatherization help are underway. Interested households should apply ASAP. Under old business Health Department Administrator Craig Beintema presented options for a permanent building location. Those options include new construction of a facility, the purchase of a different building and its renovation, or the purchase of the department’s current location also with renovation.

Beintema presented the square foot needs of the departments and the projected costs of each option.

Following a lengthy discussion, the board voted by roll call six to one to put $260,000 into the draft budget, but left its options open as to how that money would be spent. Preston, Imel, Hartman, Stitzel, Picolotti and Payette voted yes. Reibel voted no.

Fritz and Cole were absent.

The board adjourned and will next meet Nov. 20, at 9:30 a.m. in the small courtroom, Carroll County Courthouse.

Raw milk rules in state subject of public hearing Citizens against proposed regulations outnumber those in favor by 6-to-1 margin

By TOM KOCAL Prairie Advocate TKocal@prairieadvocate.com SPRINGFIELD — More than 150 people attended Thursday’s Illinois Department of Public Health’s hearing on proposed raw milk rules and regulations, held at the Illinois Building on the Illinois State Fairgrounds. favor of them.

The IDPH received more than 700 public comments during the initial 45-day comment period, which ended Oct. 20 and spurred the hearing.

Melaney Arnold, IDPH communications director, said comments made Thursday will be analyzed, and “we will make any potential changes that we have to the proposed rules, and then we will submit them to the Joint Committee on Administrative Regulations, and it will be ultimately up to them to approve.”

JCAR is a legislative committee responsible for reviewing and implementing state regulations.

Members will begin their review of the proposed regulations after a 45-day public comment period.

JCAR has the power to approve or reject the regulations.

Gov. Pat Quinn also has the power to order IDPH to withdraw the proposed rules, that is, until newly elected Bruce Rauner takes the reins in January.

“The proposed rules undermine the governor’s efforts to promote local food and small farms,” said Pete Kennedy with the Farm-to-

Consumer Legal Defense Fund.

“Within the past 10 years, 20 percent of the state’s conventional dairy farms have gone out of business.

Imposing burdensome regulations on Illinois raw milk producers will cause even more dairies to shut down.”

Raw milk advocate Marc Gravert of Spring Valley Farm in Thursday.

“I have the basic right to sell milk to anyone that wants to drink it. The issue of being raw, or unpasteurized, is not an issue by today’s standards. The reasons for pasteurization are outdated. Today, we have refrigeration, sanitation, stainless steel milking equipment – all this new equipment and knowledge, everything we need to make milking better. It’s no longer necessary,” he said.

“Plus, most of the proposed rules are ridiculous. You can’t serve your milk to a friend or guest in your home? If your home is not at the farm where you milk, you can’t take it off the farm to your own home?

You can’t be within a mile and a half of city limits? It’s just plain crazy what they’re trying to implement.”

“IDPH has their mind made up.

But it’s good to let them know we are still here, and we’re not going to let it go. After Tuesday’s election, I think the elected people in notice that we’re tired of the same old business. The ones who don’t care are the ones who just have a

job. They don’t care if they work for a Republican or a Democrat.

Many of them truly believe they are doing the best for us, but they think they have to take care of us.

Hopefully, JCAR will take into consideration everyone that was there who made comments against it, and rule accordingly.

“On the other hand,” he said, are some who don’t want the general public to eat anything that’s good for them. You can smoke cigarettes, you can drink as much alcohol as you want until it kills with that. But when it comes to raw milk that is known to be perfectly healthy, they have a problem with that.”

In favor of the rules

Ralph Schubert, MS, MA, is a consulting associate and special assistant to the director of the Illinois Public Health Association, a not-for-profit organization based in Springfield. Arnold said he was one of the first to testify in favor of the proposed rules and regulations.

In an email response from Schubert, he did not send comments from his own testimony at the hearing. Rather, he attached a copy of the Oct. 9 letter that three public health organizations submitted to period on the proposed amendments regarding the sale or distribution of raw milk. The letter was signed by David Remmert, PhD, president of the Illinois Public Health Association, Terry Mason, MD, FACS,

president of the Northern Illinois Public Health Consortium, and Beth Fiorini, MS, president of the IlIinois Association of Public Health Administrators.

“I did not submit a written copy of the testimony I gave to the Department at last Thursday’s hearing,” Schubert wrote.

The letter stated, “The public health organizations of Illinois share the view of international, national, and state health organizations . . . in opposing the consumption of raw milk.”

The letter continued, “The Illinois General Assembly has determined that the sale of raw milk is allowed if done on the premises of the dairy farm and in accordance with the rules.”

The IDPH has on several previous occasions stated that there are no rules, only policy that has been applied, with no adverse results, for the past 30 years.

According to Dr. Joseph Mercola at Mercola.com, “Raw milk dairy products from organically raised pasture-fed cows rank among some of the healthiest foods you can consume. It’s far compared to pasteurized milk, and if statistics are any indication, it’s safer, too.”

“This is a freedom of choice issue,” Kennedy added. “If consumers want to buy raw milk from an unlicensed producer, that should be their prerogative. IDPH doesn’t need to be protecting consumers from themselves, especially with the Illinois producers’ strong track record for safety.”

Mercola agrees. “All of this makes the war on raw milk all the more disconcerting. There are many raw foods sold, yet raw dairy is being singled out for elimination. Could you imagine if raw oysters, for example, suddenly became a ‘forbidden’ food?

Livestock farmers will hear details of the new state rules for concentrated animal feeding operations at seven informational meetings next month hosted by the Illinois Farm Bureau and Illinois Pork Producers Association. It is important to note that portions of the updated rules impact all livestock

farms – not just those required to obtain national pollutant discharge elimination system permits from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.

The meetings are open to all farmers. There is no charge, but reservations are required at least one week before the meeting. Information will be presented from 4 to 6 p.m., followed by a meal at 6:30 p.m.

Surviving adversity, then making a difference Caring Hands Helping Everyone Manage Obstacles

What may have been earthshattering adversity for one woman was transformed into an altruistic endeavor to assist others in need.

Thus, the CHHEMO Foundation (Caring Hands Helping Everyone Manage Obstacles) was born.

Jodi French, founder of CHHEMO, was born and raised in Thomson, and married her high school sweetheart, Kenneth “K.C.�

French. They have three children: Cody, Tyler, and KaCee, a junior at West Carroll.

In fall 2012, French was diagnosed with breast cancer. “KaCee and her wonderful friends, without knowing it, gave me the will to get up every day, and who I looked forward to seeing play softball or volleyball. I wanted that, even though I was sick, there were others that were worse off than me, and there were ways that she and I could help them,� French said. “The following summer, I was KaCee’s summer softball coach, so we planned a ‘Strike Out’ cancer game. This went well, and she enjoyed it, and saw how much people were willing to help others in need.�

After the 2013-2014 school

year started, French contacted Joe Hansen, the athletic director at West Carroll High School, volunteering to organize a Pink Out game during the volleyball season. He was receptive to the idea, and the game was on. “In a week and half, I had organized what I thought would just be a little thing, but the event ended up raising almost $900,� French said. “As I started seeing all my bills come in, and paying attention to the money we were having to pay for medications, and the other costs, like driving to appointments, treatments, wigs, and more, I began to wonder how on earth others in my situation could afford it. I knew that some will have to make choices on whether they need medications or groceries. “I was lucky to have good insurance and family and friends means to be able to pay for what was left. That’s when I rolled around the thought of doing fundraising for other patients.�

As French searched the Internet for fundraising ideas, she discovered the foundation concept that eventually motivated her to take the idea one step further. “I met many people during my chemo treatments, and the idea of starting a group to assist patients that are going through treatment formed. We thought about a foundation geared toward helping patients. There are so many great foundations that raise money for research, but rarely can you get help for patients. In our area there is hardly anything available for help, and many patients have no idea where to turn. That’s when I gathered my CHHEMO crew.�

French said. “They have helped me from day one of diagnosis, and have continued their support 2 years into my remission. We all have the same drive and goals, and we all work well together. I can never say enough thank you’s. I am paying it forward by starting this foundation to help other cancer patients. Hopefully, I will make them feel half as special as my friends and family have made me feel these last 2 years. “We decided on naming the foundation, The CHHEMO Foundation, for a couple of reasons. We wanted something that people would recognize that meant we were supporting cancer patients, not just breast cancer, but all cancers. When most people hear that someone is going through ‘chemo’ treatments, they know the patient has some type of cancer. We wanted meaning behind the name, so we added the second ‘H’ to complete what we wanted to say, which is ‘Caring Hands Helping Everyone Manage Obstacles.’�

This year, Hansen scheduled the Pink Out volleyball game for Oct 7. CHHEMO and West Carroll are also planning Pink Outs for softball

and baseball next spring, but the dates haven’t been set. “Thank you will not even cover what the community has done to help raise money to start my foundation,� French stated. “What an awesome turn out for both West Carroll and East Dubuque volleyball teams Oct. 7. It always blows my mind at the unending support from everyone. “Students did an amazing job of bringing in donations to help start the Chemo Care Kits for new chemo patients. I hope the kids realize that the little effort of bringing in such simple items like soft socks, chap stick, lotion, etc., means so much to a cancer patient.�

French acknowledged the student “Rack Pack� section, the volleyball girls from both teams, the fans and coaches that showed so much enthusiasm and spirit for the cause; and thanked Hansen and high school Principal Adam Brumbaugh for their support and guidance. “Your students should take note and follow in your shoes,� she said. “Businesses have helped in so many ways. Please know that I am truly appreciative of your support.

I hope that everyone continues to support not just the foundation, but others, whether it be at another Pink Out game, another foundation, giving items to a cancer patient, or just being there for someone. It’s just those little things that mean a ton to a patient.�

Obituaries DuWayne Vos CHADWICK – DuWayne Vos centered his life around his faith and family. Friends and family often would see him mowing with his John Deere and sharing his sense of humor.

At the age of 96, DuWayne passed away o n We d n e s day, Nov. 5, 2014, at the Good Samaritan Society in Mount Carroll.

DuWayne was born March 11, 1918, in Morrison to Peter and Nellie (Dykstra) Vos. He attended Morrison schools. On April 24, 1942, he married Christine Vandermyde in Morrison. Christine died on May 3, 2007. DuWayne proudly served his country from 1944 to 1946 as a corporal in the Army during World War II, receiving the Bronze Star.

DuWayne farmed most of his life near Chadwick, enjoying the outdoors and time with family. He was a longtime member of Ebenezer Reformed Church in Morrison, where he served as an elder and Sunday school teacher. He attended

Hope United Methodist Church.

He enjoyed watching TV, mowing, spending time with family and friends.

DuWayne will be dearly missed by his son, Gordon (Joan) Vos of Chadwick; two daughters, Faye (David) Livermore of Galesburg and Ellen (Robert) Etien of Bella Vista, Arkansas; eight grandchildren, Derek (Brenda) Clevidence of Cottage Grove, Wisconsin, Daniel (Nona) Clevidence of Ankeny, Iowa, Robert (Jess) Etien of Schenectady, New York, Lynda (Bud) Erickson of Dunlap, Rebecca (Jeff) Harris (Doug) Wibholm of Ankeny, Sarah (Terry) Foust of Port Byron, and Amber (Kurt) Bush of DeWitt, Iowa; 13 great-grandchildren, Brett, Emily, Jack, Kyle, Morgan, Ryan, Casey, Breanne, Trevor, Trenton, Cecilia, Cooper and Ella; and two half-sisters, Lorraine Dykema of Monroe, Wisconsin. He also was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Dora; his sister, Faye Vandermyde; and his half-sister, Pauline Wilkens.

DuWayne’s ashes are buried in Grove Hill Cemetery in Morrison.

Merle David Long

SAVANNA – Merle David Long enjoyed always “being there� for his family and community. He approached life with a positive attitude, taking one day at a time and making the most of it.

At the age of 71, Merle passed away in the loving care of his family on Sunday, Nov. 2, 2014.

Merle was born June 1, 1943 in Savanna, the son of Charles David and Betty Jean (BeddingSavanna High School with the Class of 1961. Merle served in the Air Force from 1962 to 1966. On Dec. 26, 1967, Merle married Wanda Kay Wells in Thomson. He became an electrician in 1967 with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers 145, Rock Island – Moline. Merle retired in 2000 after 33 years.

Merle loved spending family time together, watching the grandkids’ events, walking, riding his

bike, old country music, and muscle cars. He enjoyed community sertelling stories and being outside. He liked playing cards, Sudoku and completing Crypto-quotes.

Merle also was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, where he served on the Cemetery Committee. He was a Savanna City Council member for 22 years, a Savanna Township trustee; and a member of the Carroll County Housing Authority board and the American Legion.

He also was chairman of Savanna Train Car Museum and one of the founders of the Haunted Forest.

Merle will be dearly missed by his wife, Wanda Long, of Savanna; three sons, Mark (Kristie) and Steven Long, both of Savanna and Michael (Britney) Long of Thomson; three grandchildren, Jordyn, Sydney and Zion; one great-grandson, Drake; three stepgrandchildren, Halley, Kalley and Kellsey; one step-great-grandson, Shaydyn; and a sister, Jerrie Letcher of Thomson.

Merle was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Carole Klein and Lela Meinsma.

Burial was in St. Peter Lutheran Cemetery, Savanna. A memorial fund has been established for Uni-

Bugle presented during meal for area veterans

By LYNNETTE FORTH For Prairie Advocate LANARK – A bugle donated in the memory of a Korean War veteran and a presentation on the Illini Girls State program were among the highlights at a free potluck dinner the American Legion and the VFW held recently at the Heritage Center for local veterans and their families.

Leanella Kloepping presented the bugle to the VFW and American Legion in memory of her husband of 62 years, Duane, who died Aug 13, 2013, at the age of 81. He was 44th Engineer Battalion from 1954 to 1955, serving in Korea.

The Legion’s LaMoille Poffenberger and Lance Leverton thanked Kloepping. “It will come in handy,�

Leverton said. Poffenberger played taps on the horn later that evening.

Eastland High School students Hanna Miner and Mikie Davies spoke about their participation in the weeklong Girls State program teaches selected high school students about the workings of city, county, and state government.

The post paid expenses for one of the girls, Poffenberger said. “Thank you for the opportunity to go, we really enjoyed it,� Miner said.

State Rep. Brian Stewart, R-Freeport, also spoke, and Kevin and Amy Barnes and their daughter and son-in-law, Bev and and Gary Dyson, presented a plaque in honor of Kevin’s father, longtime post member Ernie Barnes of Lanark.

Eastland-Pearl City rallies for 27-20 win A stiff defense from both teams set the pace early in the Class 2A second-round playoff game between EPC and Spring Valley Hall on Saturday in Lanark. Neither team was able to crack the scoreboard in the opening quarter as both teams zone first as quarterback Drew Pullam hooked up with junior Jake Merkel on a 21-yard scoring strike with about a minute and a half to go in the second quarter. EPC responded with a score of its own with just under a minute to play in the half as Deven Heeren found Brighton Haverland on an 18-yard touchdown pass to knot the score at 7-7.

EPC took the lead when Eric Schaney scored from 5 yards out in the third to give the ‘Catz a 14-7 lead.

Hall came right back as Pullam again found Merkel from 31 yards out and the extra point kick made it 14-14.

The Red Devils’ Andrew Kerr gave Hall the lead back when he scored from a yard out. The extrapoint kick was blocked to keep Spring Valley’s lead at 20-14.

On the ensuing kickoff, Eric Schaney ran through a Hall defender and sprinted 80 yards to the house to give the ‘Catz the lead. The extrapoint kick by Silas Jacobs gave EPC a 21-20 lead they would not relinquish.

Schaney added a 2-yard touchdown run, his third of the game, in score 27-20. EPC (11-0) takes to the 10-1 Rockridge Rockets with a trip to

By TY REYNOLDS Sauk Valley Media sports writer HANOVER – It’s always tough playing catch-up, but it’s nearly impostwo-time defending state champions.

The Eastland Cougars found that out the hard way Thursday night, falling behind early on in both games of a 25-19, 25-16 loss to Keith Country Day, which has won the past two Class 1A crowns.

“When we got down, the girls kind of felt like, ‘Uh oh, we buried ourselves, now what do we do,’” said longtime Eastland coach Kristy Pierce, who recorded her 900th career victory in the sectional semiteam out there; they’ve played a lot of volleyball together, and it showed.”

Behind UConn recruit Iman McGary, Keith (32-6) jumped out to a 14-4 lead in Game 1 and an 11-3 margin in Game 2. McGary in the opening game, and slammed en route to a match-high 16 kills.

But the biggest impact the senior hitter had came at the end of Game 1. With Eastland (32-7) having fought back to within 19-16, McGary closed out that set with a with another hot streak.

“She’s not going to UConn for nothing,” Pierce mused. “We match, … especially when they have a go-to player who can put it away.”

Trailing by 10 in Game 1, junior hitter Cassidy Logemann started Eastland’s rally with a kill and a block on back-to-back points.

“We fought hard to get back in it, and we thought we had a chance push through a couple more points,” said Fink, who had a team-high eight kills. “If we had just started stronger, not gotten down by so much so early, I think we could’ve stuck with them.”

But the song was the same in 14 points, then kept Eastland from of the way. Eastland got to within – before Keith pulled away.

A McGary kill started another Keith run, and she followed two kills and a block by freshman setter Zoe Nunez with two more kills in a three-point span for a 22-12 lead.

SPRINGFIELD – Fitch Ratings issued a detailed comparison during the week of the three states with the lowest credit ratings, two changes to the state constitution were approved, and oil extraction companies are one step closer to beginning the hydraulic fracturing (fracking) process for oil and natural gas in Illinois.

Fitch Ratings: Where does Illinois stack up?

On Nov. 3, Fitch Ratings issued an extensive comparison of the three states with the lowest credit ratings: Illinois, California and New Jersey.

These are the only three states rated below the “AA” category by Fitch.

The report noted that at this time, “Fitch judges California to have the the weakest.” In fact, according to Fitch, Illinois’ credit rating remains the worst in the nation at A-/Negative, with California ranked A/Stable and New Jersey ranked A/Negative. By Gloria Yoder Is everyone enjoying this pleasant fall weather before winter sets in?

Now deer hunters are spending time in the woods once more. Deer meat has been a tremendous blessing in our community in the past. With having a large quantity of deer in our area, hunters help keep the disease rate down. In areas with lots of deer and few hunters, the deer end up with a lot of sicknesses and diseases sweeping through and killing large numbers of them.

This summer my husband Daniel promised Julia that he’d take her along bow hunting. He explained to her the importance of holding still and not talking too loudly on the stand. Naturally, she was all excited and impressed with the idea. She informed him that once she’s big, she is also going to go hunting. “And, Daddy,” she said, “if you go hunting with me, you’re going to have to hold very still!”

So recently, Daniel asked me if Julia and I would like to go with him hunting that evening.

“If I don’t have a chance to shoot anything, that is OK,” he told me. “I just want Julia to have a chance to go out with us.” Of course Julia was all for it. She felt all grown up especially when putting on an orange stocking cap just like Daddy’s.

After a good trek we arrived at our stand, climbed up the ladder, and settled down. Julia sat between there glued to the spot, barely even blinking, not saying a word for fear of spooking the deer.

“You’re doing better than even Mom and Dad,” we praised her. For a 3-year-old, she did a fantastic job even though she was tired of it by the time the sun set. Unfortunately, Daniel didn’t have any chance to shoot anything, yet at the same time it made special memories of time spent together.

As a young girl my Dad would occasionally take us children along deer hunting. On days we didn’t go along we anxiously waited for his return in hopes to hear a success story. Sometimes when it was suitable he would take us with him to help drag the deer out of the woods.

We as a family relied heavily on deer as a primary source of meat. Now with being married to a hunter, I’m also blessed with an ample supply of venison. I have food memories of getting together with my cousins on winter evenings to help each other butcher deer.

We like sawing the steaks to be marinated and grilled or fried. Most of the venison is trimmed off and ground. The buck meat, which tends

1 tablespoon vinegar 1-1/2 teaspoon liquid smoke In a large bowl, combine the ground venison, milk, oats, cracker crumbs, eggs, and seasonings. Stir or knead until the meat mixture is well-combined. Shape into 1-1 /2 inch balls. Place on cookie sheets and bake at 350 degrees until no longer pink inside, about 15-20 minutes. it for later.

I’ll include a venison meatball recipe. My mother and I have made hundreds of these. They freeze very well so I like like making a large batch and putting a bunch in the freezer for easy meals in the weeks to come.

Variations I like to try from time to time are adding some liquid smoke to the meatball recipe (not just the sauce) or sage seasoning. I also like substituting some of the milk with ketchup or barbecue sauce, so there is room to experiment with this recipe according to your family’s taste!

2. Voters’ Rights Amendment (HJR CA 52): This amendment prohibits any law that would disproportionately affect Illinois residents’ rights to vote based on race, color, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sex, orientation, status as a member of a language minority, or income.

The Senate sponsor of the proposed amendment indicated the intent was to prohibit adoption of voter cast a ballot.

During the spring legislative session, three advisory referendums were also placed on the ballot.

Since these measures were purely advisory, it is possible that legislation to address these issues may be introduced in the near future.

1) Minimum Wage: This advisory question, which was placed on the ballot by P.A. 98-691/HB 105, asked if Illinois’ minimum wage should be raised to $10 an hour by January. Though proposals to increase the minimum wage have been introduced in previous years, a vote on this controversial issue was deferred until after the

fall general election. The latest legislation to call for an increase in the minimum wage is Senate Bill 68, which would incrementally increase the minimum wage in Illinois to $10.65 by 2016.

2) Contraception Mandate: This advisory question, which was placed on the ballot by P.A. 98-696/ HB 5755, asked if prescription contraceptives should be covered under health insurance plans that cover prescription medication. This question was introduced in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in the Hobby Lobby case. The Supreme Court ruled some employers do not have to provide contraception coverage as part of their employees’ health insurance plan if such coverage violates the employers’ religious beliefs. However, Illinois law has already required contraceptive coverage since 2003.

3) Millionaires Tax: This advisory question, which was placed on the ballot by P.A. 98-794/HB 3816, asked voters if the state constitution should be amended to impose an additional 3 percent income tax on incomes greater than $1 million for the purpose of directing that additional funding to Illinois school districts.
