EPA: Village must address radium levels in water Board will wait on agreement, try to fix issue without new well By TONY CARTON For Prairie Advocate SHANNON -- Radium levels in village water are high enough that they must be addressed, the Village Board was told Nov. 3. Adam Holder of Fehr Graham, the village engineers’ contractor, said the Environmental Protection Agency’s third-quarter sample in August showed radium levels at 6.0 picoCuries per liter. The EPA considers levels at 5.0 or lower to be safe. “The independent tests are taken on a monthly basis, and on Aug. 31 we had 6.2, and I just got results today

for September and it was at 5.5,” Holder said. When levels exceed 5.0, water suppliers are required to notify the public and evaluate ways to lower amounts of radium. “Our Well 4 was running half the time in September, and we did that again in October, but we won’t know those test results until sometime in December,” Holder said. He said because the village has not managed to reach the allowed 5 picoCuries per liter, he asked Superintendent of Public Works Jason DeMichele to reduce use of Well 4 to 33 percent and blend water

from two of its other wells. “Number 4 will run onethird of the time and then our combination of well numbers 1 and 2 will run two-thirds of the time,” Holder said. “We’re going to try that in November and December to see if that lowers the level.” The village also received a Compliance Commitment Agreement from the EPA ordering a new blending well, Holder said. Radium is a naturally occurring radioactive element that is present in varying amounts in rocks and soil within the earth’s crust. Small amounts of radium also can be found in groundwater supplies in several forms, called isotopes. The most common isotopes in Illinois groundwater are Ra-226 and Ra-228.

It is assumed that any radiation exposure carries some degree of risk. The EPA has established a maximum contaminant level, MCL, for radium in public water supplies of 5 picoCuries per liter. The MCL for radium has been set well below levels for which health effects have been observed and is therefore assumed to be safe. Previously, Holder had sent the EPA a proposed schedule of monthly monitoring, hoping to buy time to get radium levels under control. The plan if that did not work, Holder said, was “The EPA agreed with everything - except they wanted Well 5 dug no matter what,’” said Holder. He said the village does not have to comply immedi-

ately, and there is an appeal process. “I assume the board would like me to challenge that agreement,” Holder said. “If necessary, we will comply, but I don’t want to spend the money if we don’t have to.” The estimated cost of digging a new well is $150,000. Holder said if the village could return the water to safe levels before signing the CCA, the chances of a successful appeal would improve. “I would rather have positive results up front than have to argue it back later,” Holder said. Holder warned against shutting down the Well 4, saying the village would have to submit new bacteria tests if and when it restarted

the well. There were problems with those tests when the well was brought back on line following its recent reconstruction and repair. “Sometimes it takes a month or two just to get that cleared,” Holder said. He told the board that he thinks the current acceptable radium level is too low and should be re-evaluated by the EPA. The board instructe Holder to request more time and, if necessary, begin the appeal process. In other business, the board approved an ordinance allowing a Village Police Auxiliary Program, and another ordinance allowing the use of golf carts in the village. Those ordinances will soon appear on shannonillinois.con.

Memories of times at Shearer building rolling in LANARK – Now that plans are underway for Living Lanark’s Dream for Downtown meeting, set for 6 p.m. Nov. 18 at Heritage Center, Lexie Woodward, co-chairman of the Economic Development/ MAPPING Goal 2 committee, said she was pleased with the response so far. “We’ve had some people share memories of the Shearer building,” Wood-

ward said. Dorothy Straub Shearer said, “Bill and I loved the people that came in. Either good news or bad news, they always came in and shared with us.That was one of the reasons we stayed open so long, we were putting our own money into the store. We were getting up there to where 8 hours a day was getting to be too long. We always had really great help.” “In the early days of Shearer’s, it was a one-stop

I loved the old fashioned variety store and Bill’s great personal service.” The building at 109 N. Broad St. was Shearer’s World of Variety for 65 years. Bill Shearer died in 2012 at the age of 89.

Prior to this, Bill worked at Eaton (Elkay). and while there he convinced the company to hire women in the factory. They ended up outperforming men 10-to-1. (Sesquicentennial Lanark, p.191). When Bill was asked what his proudest accomplishments were, he said it was getting Eaton to Lanark, hiring women, and being proclaimed a lifetime member of the Chamber of Commerce. Bill thought the

best thing about Lanark was that it was a great place to raise children. (Sesquicentennial Lanark, p.191) “Since Bill closed the doors of his variety store after 65 years, 109 N. Brothers branch out, bring new restaurant to city By MICHAEL MILLER For Prairie Advocate SAVANNA – The owners and operators of Lanark’s Brothers Inn Family Restaurant will soon be opening a restaurant in Savanna, and will bring their unique style of family dining to the city in the former Happy Joe’s building at 502 Main St. in downtown Savanna. Asi Seferi, one of three brothers who operate the restaurant, detailed the hours of work spent on getting the building ready for opening. “We put fresh painting all over, we painted the bathroom, the kitchen, and we put a lot of new ceiling tiles, most of them were kind of old.” Seferi, along with his

brothers and their wives, did this work themselves; after closing Brothers in Lanark at night they would come to Savanna and do the work. “We tried to do whatever we can do, so we can minimize the cost,” Seferi said. They also removed the pizza ovens that were in place and replaced them. Seferi said the Brothers in Savanna will be strictly a family-style restaurant, for now open only for dinner from 4 to 10 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday; and open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday for meals after church. The brothers plan to have a fullsize menu, including some breakfast items. “Breakfast for dinner,” as Seferi calls it. Other additions to the res-

taurant include new coolers, a new grill and broiler, and four deep fryers. “We did stuff that we need to run a full menu, not just pizzas like before,” he said. Seferi says the family is Savanna, and is not trying to compete with anyone. He says that many people from Savanna have been coming to Lanark for dinner for years and they often remark that Savanna needs a place like Brothers. and getting it ready, the family is primed to open, as soon as wait staff and other personnel can be hired and trained. “I need good people to start so I can build up a good reputation from the

beginning,” Seferi said. A lot of customers wonder why he doesn’t open in the morning, but Seferi says since it’s only 20 miles from the Lanark restaurant, they don’t want to compete with themselves, since breakfast is a very popular item there. He adds that there are already a couple places in town that serve breakfast. Seferi says they haven’t yet decided which of the three brothers – Asi, Masi or Kimi – will take over operations at the Savanna location. “My dad says, ‘Why don’t you draw straws?’” He says who goes depends on how busy the restaurant is, and it might need to involve more than one of the brothers.

Brumbaugh to ‘build on strengths’ as new leader H.S. principal tabbed to be superintendent By MICHAEL MILLER For Prairie Advocate MOUNT CARROLL — In a special meeting Friday morning of the West Carroll school board, West Carroll High School Principal Adam Brumbaugh was selected as the successor to Superintendent Craig Mathers, who will retire in June. Brumbaugh will take over the position July 1. He and his wife, Heidi, and their four children, Aubrey, Jackson, Liberty and Annika, relocated to the West Carroll dis-

trict in 2014 when he accepted the position of high school principal. He was chosen for the job based on “the current success he has created at West Carroll High School, energetic community connections, and his commitment to continuous educational improvement,” according to a news release from the district. Brumbaugh and the other were at a meet-and-greet with the public last week at ing questions from parents and others. “Sixteen months ago, the West Carroll board and Mr. Mathers took a chance on me, bringing me here as high school principal. My

family and I have been a part of it now long enough to know that it’s a place that we’d like to be,” Brumbaugh said. “And I think highly enough of the schools, of the students, of the communities, to say, ‘Yeah, we would like to stay here longer,’ and would love to have the opportunity to grow professionally and carry the torch as superintendent of West Carroll, in building off my experiences here in the last 6 months.” Asked what he can bring to the district to address its many needs, Brumbaugh said, “I try to be a glasshalf-full type of person, I try to see the positive, the silver lining in every opportunity. I see a lot of

I think that’s what I try to do is accentuate the positive and build off of the strengths that we already have.” Brumbaugh previously was administrator at Keokuk (Iowa) Christian Academy. He was the only administrator for a K-12 district for 4 years. Before that, he was a high school math teacher at Camp Point for 4 years, and a math teacher at Cambridge, both Illinois schools. Obituaries John W. Schmitt

THOMSON – John W. Schmitt, 98, of Thomson, died Friday, Nov. 6, 2015, at Good Samaritan Society in Mount Carroll. John was born Oct. 21, 1917, in Harmon, the son of Peter and Lola (Porch) Schmitt. John married Eleanor Kested on Feb. 15, 1941, in Clinton, Iowa. They celebrated 67 years of marriage before Eleanor’s passing on Aug. 4, 2008. John farmed his entire life and never truly retired. Until recently, John was still interested in daily farming activities. John was a member of Carroll County Farm Bureau, Black Oak Grange, Thomson school board, and Argo Fay United Methodist Church. He enjoyed dancing, listening to music, reading, and playing cards. He also enjoyed spending time outdoors, especially hunting for mushrooms and blackberries with his family. Most of all, John cherished spending time with his children and many grandchildren. John will be dearly missed by his six children, Joan Eissens of Baileyville, Connie (Jim) Foster of Chadwick, Karen (Frank) Norem of Joliet, Barb Burger of Savanna, Cindy (Steve) Dyson of Albany, and Michael (Suzanne) Schmitt of Mount Carroll; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor; three brothers, Walter, Paul, and Ted Schmitt; and

ELGIN – Even with as focused as the Eastland volleyball team has been all season, the Cougars still got caught up in the moment toward the end of the Class 1A Elgin Westminster Christian Supersectional on Saturday afternoon. Sitting at match point – one point away from a berth in next weekend’s state tournament – after a Heather Larak ace and a Harvest Christian hitting error, the celebration Eastland has been wanting so badly had to wait a few more minutes. But after Harvest Christian strung together six straight points to make things far more interesting than the Cougars and their fans would have liked, junior Makenzie Fink slammed Eastland a 25-12, 25-21 victory, and punch its ticket to Redbird Arena. “They got a little wrapped up in the moment – but it was a really big moment,” longtime coach Kristy Pierce said of her players. “They got a little tight there at the end, but they gathered it back up and got it done.” It was a slight hiccup in what otherwise has been a
