LANARK — Action taken at the Eastland school board meeting Oct. 22 has created quite a stir in the district communities of Lake Carroll, Lanark and Shannon. In its Oct. 28 issue, the Prairie Advocate reported that the board approved a plan to issue bonds in the amount of $3.5 million to pay for replacement of the original heating, ventilation and air conditioning units in the 1927, 1951, 1952 and 1957 sections of the Eastland Elementary School in Shannon and the Eastland Junior/Senior High School in Lanark. House Bill 178 would create a 1-year tax freeze on the general fund tax levies extended by most townships that have populations of less than 100,000 and are subject to PTELL. “The board’s plan is to do this work through the issuance of working cash bonds or health life safety bonds, or through a combination of the two,” Hansen said. “This would give them

MORRISON — James Edward Fulton, 88, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 31, 2015, at Big Meadows Nursing Home in Savanna. Jim was born in Clinton, Iowa, to Grace May Harderson and Edward Anthony Fulton on Sept. 20, 1927. At 17 years of age, Jim joined the Navy and served in World War II. MOUNT CARROLL — Madelyn E. Dollinger, 104, of Mount Carroll, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2015, at Good Samaritan Society in Mount Carroll. Madelyn was born May 29, 1911, in rural Chadwick, the daughter of John and Kathyrn (Tripp) Sauer. On May 13, 1932, Madelyn married the love of her life, Ernest “Buster” Dollinger. Both Madelyn and Buster farmed for many years. Buster passed away Feb. 12, 1988. Madelyn was a member of Church of God in Mount Carroll. She enjoyed mowing her own lawn until she was 86 years old. Most of all, Madelyn loved gardening and eating onions right out of the garden. Madelyn will be dearly

missed by her close friends Ardith Frederick and George (Jane) Reser. Madelyn was preceded in death by her husband, brothers and sisters. City hopes sewer rate hike won’t be ‘worst case’

SAVANNA — Mayor Tony McCombie addressed concerns about the issue of raising sewer rates, which she said have been discussed for more than a year. She emphasized the discussions that have been reported regarding the potential increase is the “very worst case scenario” and that the increase will be incremental. In September, the council passed an ordinance allowing for the incremental increase of sewer service rates by 2018, with a potential of a $29 total increase over this period of time, with the mayor emphasizing that this is a “worst case scenario.” The hike is in response to an IEPA requirement to identify funding for loan payoff for the wastewater sewer plant project and associated projects. McCombie urged the council to patiently explain the issue to citizens who are concerned. She said the city was “very, very, very hopeful” that this “worst

Susan Munz once again addressed the council regarding drainage issues on her property in the eastern section of the city, with McCombie saying that the city had undertaken a title search for the area to determine which portions of this section of town are city property and which are not, as well as identifying exist-

ing easements. Munz explained that she had spoken with a landscaping contractor who said that nothing could be done to help protect her property in the long term until the area’s drainage issues are addressed. McCombie said that besides a title search, the city would proceed with an engineer’s study to address

SAVANNA – On a cold, clear, moonless night in the middle of winter, all is not quite what it seems in the remote, mythical town of Almost, Maine. As the northern lights above, Almost’s residents and out of love in unexpected and often hilarious ways. Hello, from beautiful, sunny Thomson, Illinois! As the days shorten and the nights grow longer, you will find me crappie fishing on the mighty Mississippi. The crappies are eating everything in sight, these days, and I am usually right in the middle of them in October and early November. I got a call from my friend Charlie the other day, saying “The eagle has landed.” Now, these crappie fishermen are very closed mouth about when and where they are biting. Being one of those people, I knew that secret phrase meant he found fish. After meeting at an undisclosed location, Charlie and I hit the water just after daylight. I was scheduled to work that day, so I practiced a few times, called in sick, then I camouflaged my car so my wife wouldn’t see it parked along the river, but it didn’t work. After 15 years of living with me, she is on to most of my games. She didn’t get mad, but instead left a note on my windshield that said “When you’re done, we’re going shopping, so be home by three thirty.” As the weather turns, we always go shopping for fall decorations. Our first stop is always the Heirloom Market & Café. On Tasty Tuesdays from 11am-1pm as store manager Jackie hands out free samples of their all natural foods, or grab some fresh popcorn while

Judy Gentile, PAL member and coordinator of the art show, said Sandra Dunlap of Mount Carroll was the Best of Show winner in the amateur acrylic painting of “Colorful Owl.“ Best of Show winner in the advanced division was Becca Howe of Mount Carroll for her colored pencil “Bird judge was Steve Lucke of Maquoketa, Iowa. “We had 46 students of Dawn Hansen’s art class from West Carroll Primary School enter our Kids Art Contest this year,” Gentile said. “Annie Raab, 9, won 1st place, Kylee Engaldo, 8, won 2nd place and Kylee Foltz, 9, won a 3rd a place ribbon. Playoff appearance a high note for West Carroll By Sauk Valley Media staff DOWNS – First-year West Carroll football coach Matt Leitzen wanted to “change the mindset” of the 1-8 team he inherited this year. Despite a rain-soaked, muddy Class 2A playoff road loss Saturday to Downs Tri-Valley, 22-0, Leitzen said it doesn’t change his pride for this year nor his optimism for next. This was the in eight seasons, improving from a team that gave up 49 points per game in 2014, to rebound with a 5-4 record. “When you’re coming off a 1-8 season, playoffs are a lofty goal to a degree,” Leitzen said. “We thought we had the talent to win 5 or 6 games. We weren’t sure where they were going to come from, but if you can get out of [the Northern Upstate Illini] conference, you’re doing big things. That says you can play with almost anybody.” The Vikings, who are the No. 1 seed, dominated the line of scrimmage, and capitalized on Thunder miscues. And West Carroll suffered a key loss when a focal point early in the second quarter. Senior two-way lineman Anthony Barr’s broke his left ankle after rolling it under an opposing blocker. Play was stopped for nearly 20 minutes to

If it could be any wetter, we’d be playing in a shower,” Leitzen said. The coach said this season was intent on being a building block. Coming off eight straight losing seasons, he said players initially were “intimidated” by conference rivals. Part of the culture shift is owed to the key returners, said Thunder running back Ethan Mangler. As a senior, he played his last game on Saturday. But Mangler believes the team and Leitzen have a good starting point in 2015. “We had a lot of experience this

MOUNT CARROLL – The Kunes Country Auto Group of Mount Carroll ended its October Grand Opening Celebration Month just the way it began – with a bang. On Oct. 28, owner Greg Kunes and his staff hosted a ribbon cutting and Business After Hours with the Mount Carroll Chamber of Commerce. “We celebrated our 10th

anniversary here in Mount Carroll in September,” Kunes said. “This is a wonderful facility. We love Carroll County and Mount Carroll, and have made some good friends. You’re all good neighbors.” “We congratulate you on 10 years in Mount Carroll, and this beautiful new facility,” said Mount Carroll Mayor Carl Bates. “We’re glad you’re here and have made Mount Carroll your home.” On Saturday, Kunes had a Grand Opening Celebration,

with a cookout, live radio remote and a $1,000 grand prize winner. Jennifer Myers, director of marketing for Kunes Country Auto Group, said that every Saturday in October a name was drawn for a winner of $250. The winner chose an school athletic booster program to donate an additional $500 in their name. Kunes Country Auto Group is at state Route 64, just west of state Route 78 in Mount Carroll.
