MOUNT CARROLL — Throughout October, area agencies are working to shed light on the terrible reality of domestic violence. Almost everyone is familiar with some form of domestic violence, but still the problem not only remains, but grows. Riverview Center is working with added fervor this month to shed light on the issue and to put an end to domestic violence. It is visiting schools, civic organizations and even received an approved resolution from the Carroll County Board at its October meeting, recognizing the month as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. “One in four women experience some form of domestic violence in their lifetime, and our goal is to talk about that and to

professional training, and 10 hours of public education just for the domestic violence services.” Statistically, Heath had actually shared conservative numbers. According to the CDC, nationally one in four women and one in seven men will become victims of domestic violence in their lifetime. This could be a best friend, a sister or brother or coworker. Often unheralded is that more than 60 percent of the time, domestic violence will happen at home, making it the third leading cause of homelessness. VIOLENCE CONTINUED ON A3

Speaking of the holiday season coming upon us, don’t forget as you are planning your holiday travel that Farm Bureau members can save on hotels. Sometimes it is just better to plan on staying in a hotel than cram everyone into a relative’s house. That extra space and being able to escape for a while is the peace! A savings of 20 percent off is enough for me to make that decision easily! Just last week I was driving home from Sterling around 6:30 at night. I was very frustrated as I was driving. I had come up on some farmers who were making bad decisions. I was on county roads, which are very highly traveled. The one that got me the most was the boy who was probably 12 or 13. He wasn’t very big. He was driving an old tractor. It was an IH without a roll bar. I was driving into the setting sun and came up behind him. He was pulling a hayrack and there were no visible lights. It was at just that right time of dusk where he was very hard to see. Part of me wanted to stop him and point out how hazardous it was for him to be doing what he was doing at that time of night with no lights. He was also sitting to the side of the seat to reach better. The other part wanted to stop at the Whiteside County Sheriff’s house and have him go talk to this kid’s

parents! I was a kid at one time on a farm who did things I shouldn’t have. As an adult I realize how stupid I was at times. Also, as a parent who knows how BUSY that road is and how I was paying attention and barely saw him, what about all those others who aren’t? I know as well! So the moral of this story is for parents to think about what situation you are putting your young farmers in as you are having them help this fall. The time of year has come where I anxiously wait to get feedback on our annual reports. I have heard that our Young Leaders did not win the Harvest for All award for our membership group. This, I believe, is a county beat us by collecting over 35,000 pounds of food! WOW! That is a lot of food for a group to collect. Congrats to them and their success.

“An apple a day keeps the doctor away” is an old adage that studies are indicating is true. Crisp, juicy apples are a fall tradition, and the varieties to sample are countless. You can choose crunchy or tender, sweet or tart in red, yellow, or green. Apples contain a wide variety of phytochemicals, many of which have been found to have strong antioxidant activity. After many years serving the Carroll County Senior Services organization, Carol Young, Carroll County Transit dispatcher, is retiring. A Retirement Reception will be held from noon to 2:30 p.m. Dec. 15 at the Senior Center. “Please stop by and say goodbye to our wonderful dispatcher,” said Nancy Gable, CCSSO executive director. “Carol is going to missed, however we know she will be enjoying her retirement with her children and grandchildren. Her last day of work will be Dec. 28. We wish you the best, Carol.”

Activities at the Senior Center Recycling Senior Service earns a great deal of money each year through the efforts of those who gather newspapers and aluminum cans in their respective communities, and those who bundle the paper and haul it to the local distribution centers. We need more help with this project. The “gathering” people work just a couple of hours a month in their respective communities. The “bundlers” work at the Senior Center just about any day when they have an hour or two to spare. And the “loaders/haulers” help load and/or haul the papers to the distribution center. Senior Center Gift Shop The Gift Shop at the Senior Center has very unique gifts handmade by talented volunteers working throughout Carroll County. With enough participants, games, such as bridge or cribbage, while others may decide to play multiple games or something different. If you need instruction on playing a chosen game, other participants will gladly teach you. Call 815-244-1800 if you have questions. Pool Players Pool players gather Thursday at 10 a.m. every week. Do you enjoy playing pool, but have no one to play with? Do you need to sharpen your skills? If so the Senior Center has a pool table on the lower level. There are also balls and cue sticks. All we need are players. No reservation is needed. Quilters The quilters are here every Thursday from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. They welcome anyone who wants to join them. Grandparents and Other Relatives Raising Children Grandparents and Other Relatives Raising Children (GORRC) support group will meet Tuesday, Nov. 24, at the Senior Center in downtown Mount Carroll. There is no charge. The lunch, at 12:30 p.m., is free

In Mount Carroll, food is served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Carroll United Methodist Church. Any age is welcome. Donations are accepted but not required. Penny Von Essen cooks for both locations and food is brought to Mount Carroll. Volunteers are involved in this endeavor. Why eat alone? Consider joining the group often! Are You Turning 65? Three Carroll County burglaries investigated MOUNT CARROLL — Carroll County Crime Stoppers is requesting your help in solving three crimes being investigated by law The Carroll County Sheriff’s Department is investigating an incident that occurred on Sept. 30 south of Savanna on Charles Street, located in the Walker subdivision. A resident reported that a pressure washer delivered to their residence by UPS was taken from the property before the resident was able to take possession of it. The pressure washer is a 2700 PSA Mastercraft upright pressure washer on wheels. The steel frame is red and the rest of the components are black. The Milledgeville Police Department is investigating two residential burglaries that took place on Wednesday, Oct. 14 during daytime hours.
One resident reported that she arrived home at 11:45 outside her residence. He said he was looking for a trailer that he wanted to buy. He is described as a white male, approximately 5 ft. 8 in. tall, 160 pounds, clean shaven and wearing a baseball cap. The man was driving a silver four door car, possibly a Chevy
Malibu or similar style. The subject then left the residence. Later that day, the resident also discovered that cash had been taken. Another Milledgeville resident reported that when he arrived home on the same day, he discovered cash missing from his home. Both residences were left unlocked and there was no forced entry. Milledgeville Police Chief Jim Haag asks residents to

Four generations re-visit the past at the Oakville Complex
It was chilly and a bit blustery, but it was otherwise perfect conditions for Mount Carroll’s Pumpkin Fest on Saturday, when downtown Mount Carroll was transformed into the pumpkin capital of Northwestern Illinois. Organized by the Mount Carroll Chamber of Commerce, a farmers market kicked off the fun-filled day that included a vendor fair, live music, and everything pumpkin, like pumpkin painting, pumpkin sling shots, and pumpkin races.
MOUNT CARROLL — Visitors to the Carroll County Historical Society’s Oakville Complex enjoyed an autumn afternoon touring the one-room school and other historical buildings on the site. Among the guests was four generations of the Smith family from Lanark. From 1934 to 1942 Doris Schneider Smith attended the one-room Oakville School with her brother, John. At the October 11 open house at the Complex, the siblings provided four generations of the Smith family with her personal stories of what it was like to attend a one-room school in Carroll County. She now resides in Rock

Jane Addams’ vision for political candidates featured at HCC FREEPORT — The Highland Community College Global Task Force will host a program entitled Jane Addams: Why her vision is vital today, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 5, in the Student/Conference Center, Room H201. The program will be presented by Judy Whipps, a professor of Liberal Studies
and Philosophy at Grand Valley State University in Michigan. She has published a four volume edited set of Addams’s writings, as well as many articles on Addams. She established the Jane Addams’ Prize, given out by the Society for the Advancement of American Philosophy. Addams’ work has inspired Whipps’ thinking about education, and social change.
A wellknown native of northwestern Illinois, Addams was born in CedarJudy Whipps ville before going on to become the co-founder of the Hull House, the nation’s most A tireless advocate for social reform, Addams founded the Women’s International
League for Peace and Freedom and was co-founder of National Child Labor Committee, the American Civil Liberties Union, the NAACP, and the Immigrant’s Protective League. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931. “My program will focus on Jane Addams’ vision which was shaped during a time when democracy was in crisis,” said Whipps. “I
will speak of how deep divisions between the rich and rights, the turmoil around immigration and working arising from labor movement were all threatening the stability of the nation. “Even though Addams was 60 years old before she was able to vote, her activism changed the landscape of these social and political
issues. Her aspirations for democracy, and her trust in the pragmatist method of working with others are models that all of us, including politicians, can still learn from today,” said Whipps.
