More room for pavers at Veteran’s Memorial have been purchased and installed around the base of

SHANNON – Phase 2 of the Shannon American Legion Veteran’s Memorial is complete.

Post Commander Ernie Johnson said the second phase included a main centerpiece monument inscribed, “For All Who Served,” and a granite bench engraved with emblems from all the armed forces and the inscription, “In Honor of Our Troops Past and Present.”

“A key component of this phase was installing gray granite pavers engraved with the names of local veterans, their rank and branch of service, and the

they served,” Johnson said. “So far, 83 pavers

As of Oct. 15, Lanark Mayor John Huggins said, there will be no need to look up, memorize, or add 20 numbers to your cellphone contacts. With one number – 815-4931155 – you will be able to emergencies, and every civic club and organization in Lanark.

“I approached Frontier about a true 3-1-1 system.

The price was astronomical, because those centers usually have live operators,” Huggins said. “They looked into an automated system that would be similar, but that, too, was very expensive.”

When the police department was planning its move to a new location in the Lanark Municipal Building, it was going to install a new phone system, working with Don Dietz of Lanark-based business Telephone Maintenance Company.

“I worked with Don to reasonably priced solution,” Huggins said. “He found a system that would meet the needs and a cost that was a fraction of what I had seen before. And it was a one-time equipment and setup fee, not an added monthly cost.

“We set up new phones for the police department, city hall, and the library to go along with the system so that if a live person answers they can transfer the call with the press of a button, instead of trying call.”

Huggins said the new system will guide the caller

through an automated phone tree. Some of the options forward directly to the correct phone, and some are a mailbox to leave a message. He said it will be a work in progress to make sure calls go to the right place – and to add options they may have forgotten.

“This is just one of many things we’re trying to implement to make things easier, save time, improve connectivity, improve transparency, bring our residents closer together, tions,” Huggins said. “The next thing is to expand a ‘reverse 9-1-1’ system we already have in place

Nixle is a privately held U.S. corporation that offers services for local government agencies, allowing them to send messages to residents via phone, email and Internet. Information is delivered almost instantly.

Tone set early in lopsided Senior Night victory Power surge propels Cougars past Pearl City

LANARK – Bubby Doubler is an emotional and vocal leader for the Eastland volleyball team. Thursday night in Lanark might have been the most emotional match of her career.

But the senior libero and her Cougars teammates had no trouble overcoming their Senior Night emotions Thursday, as they clicked on all cylinders in a 25-11, 25-15 NUIC West win over Pearl City.

“I’m from Pearl City, born and raised there until I moved to Eastland in eighth grade, so every time we play them there’s a lot of emotion for me,” Doubler right away tonight, and as soon as I saw that, I thought ‘This is going to be a good night.’ It was great.”

Eastland (28-1, 13-0) transferred its tears from Senior Night festivities – which

included a tribute to longtime coach Kristy Pierce, who is retiring at the end of the season – into instant power on the court. Cassidy Logemann’s thunderous kill on the second point of the match set the tone, and quick kills and blocks in the middle by Sydney Guentner kept things rolling.

When junior hitter Makenzie Fink got into the action from the outside, there was little Pearl City could do to stop the Cougars.

“I’m glad we started the way we did, because it was really sad that the seniors and Coach P were playing here for the last time,” said Fink, who smashed 12 kills.

“It was a little depressing to think about, but as soon as Recent work on out-ofsystem plays paid off, as the tips no matter how much scrambling they had to do.

And it wasn’t much. Pearl City managed just seven kills, and the Wolves were the ones who often looked out of sorts and back on their heels.

“When you get on a roll like that, you’re very eager to get the ball back and serve it again,” said Larak, who served for 10 points to open spots, and it’s pretty easy when you get into a groove back there.”

Community support sought for anti-bullying program MORRISON — Police Chief Brian Melton and Angie VanderVinne are spearheading a Phil Chalmers “True Lies” bullying PowerPoint program for high school and junior high students on Thursday, Oct. 29, during three assemblies at Morrison High School auditorium, 643 Genesee Ave., Morrison.

But parents and interested community adults will also be welcome from 6 to 7 p.m. to witness the program.

Another successful Youth Deer Hunt

SAVANNA — Thirty-six young hunters ranging in age from 10 to 15 converged Oct. 10-11 on Lost Mound Unit for 2 days of hunting.

By the end, they had bagged nine deer, seven bucks and two does. The largest was a 6-point buck that tipped the scales at 170 pounds.

This was the ninth year for the annual Youth Deer Hunt at Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge. Site Manager Alan Anderson said this year’s version was nothing short of a success.

“Hunters from Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota were here, and although not everyone got a deer, they

did see plenty of wildlife,” Anderson said. “Hunters reported seeing turkey, coyote and geese, with one excited hunter proudly relaying her story of a near miss with a family of skunks.”

Halloween stories and crafts will be featured at the Mount Carroll Public Library as they host a Halloween Story Time for children ages 4-8 starting at 11 a.m.

Be alert for deer on northwestern Illinois roads More than 15,000 motor vehicle crashes with deer statewide in 2014 SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois Department of Natural Resources, and Illinois State Police remind motorists that this is the time of year to be on high alert for deer on Illinois roads.

The latest statistics show that motor vehicle crashes involving deer increased slightly in Illinois last year: 15,356 crashes in 2014, compared to 15,334 crashes in 2013. There were 14,847 crashes that resulted in property damage only in 2014, compared to 14,811 in 2013.

Despite the increases, there were fewer fatalities resulting from crashes involving deer: four fatalities in 2014, down from six fatalities in 2013.

On average, nearly half of all crashes involving deer in Illinois happen in October, November, and December.

Approximately 80 percent of crashes involving deer

happen on rural roads at twilight or nighttime.

Tips for avoiding collisions with deer: • Reduce your speed wooded areas; be prepared to stop.

• Deer will often cross roads and double back; make sure deer have moved away from the road before proceeding.

• If you see one deer, be aware that others may be close behind.

• Alert other motorists to the presence of deer by tapping your brakes. or off the road if you see a deer; instead, slow to a stop.

Some things to remember if you are involved in a motor vehicle crash with a deer include pulling to a safe location off of the roadway. Be sure to turn on your If anyone is injured or the vehicle needs to be towed,

Claim a road kill or salvage deer For deer accidentally killed or injured by motor vehicles and methods other than lawful hunting, there is no limit to the number of deer that may be possessed under these circumstances. No part of a deer so killed can be bartered or sold.

Except for law enforcement officers in the performance of their duties it is illegal to kill a deer: • Crippled by a collision with a motor vehicle.

• Crippled by methods other than lawful hunting unless permission has been obtained from a Conservation Police Officer.

The State of Illinois is absolved of any and all liability associated with the handling or utilization of vehicle-killed deer and deer killed by methods other than lawful hunting.

Motorists are also reminded to report deer-related traffic accidents to to respond to the scene to complete a crash report. If there are no injuries and the vehicle can be driven from the scene, it is likely that you can phone in the information and a crash report can be completed.

If you are phoning in the information for the crash report, be sure you have the

appropriate law enforcement agencies when such reporting is required.

Killed/injured by methods other than lawful hunting or a vehicle/ deer accident Any individual finding a dead or crippled deer, other than those killed/ injured in a vehicle/deer collision or legally taken by hunting methods, may not transport said deer parts until permission is obtained from a Conservation Police Officer.

Permission will be granted if it is determined that the person requesting possession did not illegally kill or injure the deer.

When retained, the head/antler and hide shall be properly tagged with an irremovable tag obtained from a Conservation Police Officer.

These tags must remain attached as long as the head/antler or hide remains in the green state, or while

following information available: Time of crash, location of crash, vehicle registration information, insurance information, and names and phone numbers of any passengers in the vehicle with you at the time of crash.

A driver involved in a crash with a deer may take possession of the animal.

APPLE RIVER – The Eagle Nature Foundation will auction off all remaining plants at 10:30 a.m. Saturday St. in Apple River.

“ENF presently has over

390 plants of 160 different varieties from which people can choose,” said Terrence N. Ingram, executive director of the foundation.

Each plant is marked with a sign stating its full value before the auction. Each plant will start with a minimum bid.

“Any plants not sold at the auction will be heeled in for the winter in November. Until then, or before the auction, they may be gotten for half of the marked price for that particular plant,” Ingram said.

Collision with a motor vehicle An Illinois resident/driver of a motor vehicle involved in a vehicledeer collision has priority in legally possessing white-tailed deer killed or injured as a result of a collision.

If the driver does not take possession of the deer before leaving the collision scene, any citizen of Illinois who is not delinquent in child support may possess and transport the deer. Non-residents may not claim a road-killed deer.

Visit dnr.illinois.gov if you are claiming such a deer. You must report the possession within 24 hours. Individuals without Internet access can report such possession by calling 217-782-6431 no later than 4:30 p.m. the next business day.

College Day planned for students OREGON – Ag in the Classroom will be having a College Ag Day from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Nov. 12 at Rock River Center, 810 S. 10th St. in Oregon.

Melinda Charbonneau, Ag Literacy coordinator for the Ogle and Carroll County University of Illinois Extension, said the following schools offer agriculture programs and are planning on attending: Black Hawk College-East,

Highland Community College, Illinois State University, Joliet Junior College, Kishwaukee College, University of Illinois-Urbana/Champaign, Western Illinois University, Rockford Career College, Southern Illinois University, University of Wisconsin-Madison and Wyotech.

“This is a great opportunity for area students to meet locally with representatives of various colleges and universities,” Charbon-

neau said.

Prior to meeting with the colleges, Charbonneau said, a 15-minute interactive workshop will be led

by University of Illinois Extension 4-H Youth Educator Lisa Hepker.

“She will be offering advice and tips to prospective students to make the most out of their visit to the College Fair,” Charbonneau said.

Topics covered will include Introducing Yourself to College Reps;

Questions to Ask College Reps; and How To Follow-Up After Attending a College Fair.

“If you are interested in majoring in agriculture, attend the program and utilize this opportunity to meet with college and university representatives,” Charbonneau said.

Gentile said Steve Lucke, the Fine Arts judge will pick his choice for a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place ribbon.

Leadership Roundtable creates capable leaders MOUNT CARROLL — The future is now, and Carroll County seeks leadership. If you would like to gain or hone your leadership insight, inventory your personal leadership practices, learn to create an effective team, form detailed plans and visions and develop a keen bias for positive action, then the 2016 Carroll County Leadership Roundtable may be just what you are looking for.

Area residents are encouraged to participate in this fresh and upbeat approach to growing leadership skills.

The Roundtable is a cooperative effort of Business Support Resources LLC at Campbell Center and Highland Community College.

The program mimics the very successful Jo Daviess County Leadership Forum which has trained local leaders for well over ten years.

“The future of Carroll County and its organizations depends on a diverse group of capable and committed leaders,” said Resource Center Facilitator Russ Simpson. “The Carroll County Leadership Roundtable is committed to developing and sustaining a network of local leaders.”

The Roundtable is designed to expand an understanding of local issues while at the same time teaching participants to become effective, or more effective, leaders in the community. Participants gain valuable knowledge of community issues by attending monthly meetings, each in a different Carroll County location.

Quality guest speakers and area tours are part of this unique experience. Networking with group members and guest speakers is also a key part of the program.

“As you know, Carroll County is suffering economically, but many

individuals have taken up the cause to overcome this dilemma,” said Simpson.

“Equipping those people and others with training, networking opportunities, and a toolkit for developing and implementing effective solutions is an important and needed step for realizing a recovery.”

Individuals with no leadership experience, as well as those already in a position of leadership will in the group. Companies and corporations are also encouraged to send participants to develop quality leaders within their current employment base.

The Roundtable begins with a two and one-half day kickoff retreat, usually during late January or early February, followed by the monthly meetings. A graduation ceremony during December completes the program.

Participants also earn three hours of college credit through HCC. A knowledge of the well-known Kouzes and Pozner Leadership Model is cultivated, and participants learn to apply the model to community as well as personal and work related issues.

Five hundred dollar scholarships may be offered basis to help offset the total participation fee of $1,500.

‘Broadway in Concert’ coming to the HCC stage FREEPORT — For the past twenty years the Highland Choral Music Department has been entertaining audiences with selections from some of Broadway’s best shows at the annual Broadway in Concert event. This year’s program promises to continue the legacy of strong performances with highlights from recent shows along with great

shows from the past.

The Highland Community College Royal Scots, Chamber Singers, Highland Youth Choir and Highland Chorale are coming together for a night of music with Broadway in Concert at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 23 at the Fine Arts Theatre in the Ferguson Fine Arts Center on the Highland campus.

The Highland Chamber Singers, under the direction of Allen Redford, will perform selections from Stephen

Schwartz’s Pippen along with a number from Disney on Broadway’s newest creation, Newsies. Nominated for eight Tony Awards, Newsies tells the rousing story of Jack Kelly, a rebellious and charismatic news boy and leader of a ragged band of teen-aged Newsies, who dreams of a better life away from the streets.

The Royal Scots Vocal Jazz Ensemble performance will feature tight harmonies and a strong swing groove

on an updated version of Almost Like Being in Love from the classic Lerner and Loewe show Brigadoon. A soulful selection from the Carole King biographical musical, Beautiful will also be featured.

The Highland Chorale, directed by Heidi SpottsManthey, is comprised of HCC students and community members from across the HCC district. Their performance will include selections from the beloved

Rodgers and Hammerstein’s show The Sound of Music.

Also featured will be Seasons of Love from Rent, 42nd Street and selections from Motown, the Musical.

The HCC Youth choir will be singing selections from Disney Spectacular which includes Zip-a-Dee-DooDah, I’ve Got No Strings, Feed the Birds, Whistle While You Work, Some Day My Prince Will Come, It’s a Small World, When You Wish Upon a Star and lots
