Columbus Day The Life of Christopher Columbus

C

hristopher Columbus is credited with opening the passageways between Europe and the Americas for colonization. Though his famed voyage in 1492 is widely known, many people know little about the man whose explorations forever changed the course of world history.

Cristoforo Columbo was born on October 31, 1451 in the Republic of Genoa, Italy. His father, Domenico, was a middle-class wool weaver and also dabbled in cheese making. Columbus had three brothers, Bartolomeo, Giovanni, and Giacomo, and a sister, Bianchinetta.

Much of Columbus’ life was spent in the world of sea and travel. He apprenticed as a business agent for important Italian families, allegedly making trips to England, Ireland and possibly Iceland and may even have made several Mediterranean and Aegean sea voyages. When he traveled to modern-day Greece, it was the closest Columbus would come to reaching Asia.

Columbus’ first voyage into the Atlantic Ocean took place in 1476, not in 1492. His commercial fleet was attacked by French privateers off the coast of Portugal, and his ship was burned. Columbus survived by swimming to Lisbon, eventually settling there and meeting his future wife, Filipa. The couple had a son, Diego, but soon after giving birth, Filipa died and Columbus relocated to Spain. Columbus sired another son, Fernando, during a relationship with Beatriz Enriquez de Arana.

Columbus participated in many different expeditions, including some to Africa to gain knowledge of Atlantic Ocean currents. He believed it would be easier to sail westward to reach India and China and avoid Muslim domination of trade routes in the Middle East. Columbus set out to find financial backing for a discovery voyage Serving the Community for over 125 Years!

to determine what was west of Europe and to find uninterrupted water routes.

The voyager was rejected by the Portuguese king and also in Venice and Genoa. Columbus’ initial plan was also rejected by Spain. But in 1492, after Spain ended a war with Muslims, the Spaniards agreed to finance Columbus’ expedition, and in August of 1492, he set sail in the Santa Maria, with the Pinta and the Nina as companion ships.

After a five-week voyage across the ocean and a few stops in the Canary Islands for provisions, Columbus and his shipmates spotted land at roughly 2 a.m. on the morning of October 12, 1492. The crew reached land that they named San Salvador (the island now known as the Commonwealth of the Bahamas). Upon his arrival, Columbus encountered indigenous people who were friendly, but he used them to find gold and other valuables.

The voyagers soon traveled to Cuba and other islands of the what became known as “The New World,” before ultimately returning to Spain.

Columbus made subsequent trips westward, but conditions at the Hispaniola settlement established by the explorer during his second voyage were deteriorating and the Spanish arrested Columbus, stripping him of his titles and authority. He eventually recovered some riches and respect, but Columbus’ legacy continues to inspire debate even now. While he may have opened up trade routes and furthered colonization around the world while paving the way for future explorers, he also helped destroy the customs of many native people.

Christopher Columbus died in Spain on May 20, 1506.

Though his reputation remains a hot topic of debate, each year Americans celebrate Columbus Day on October 12th to commemorate Columbus’ life and accomplishments.

Bustos, D-East Moline, also met with library staff.

Dollinger said the Municipal Building was a catalyst for the ongoing community stimulus that started with the community celebrating its sesquicentennial in 2011.

struction last month, both on state Route 64.”

Huggins said the new Little Sprouts Daycare facility, located in the former Eastland Elementary School building, has more than 75 children and has room to grow. Eastland Motor Sports has added several new product lines and new warehouses in the past 2 years.

books received included children’s books, novels, sports, and one in particular that grabbed everyone’s attention.

Thomson federal prison activation on track

Durbin: Region ‘working hard’ to accommodate new residents

THOMSON – There was a time when some people doubted the Thomson prison would ever open.

Today, there’s no doubt about it: The prison is on its way to opening its doors. Just ask Illinois’ senior U.S. senator, the Department of Justice, or even area businesses – probably the most cautious of those who wondered if the

facility would ever open.

Sen. Dick Durbin met with Charles Samuels, director of the DOJ’s Bureau of Prisons, and reported Sept.

22 that the Thomson Correctional Center is on track to become fully operational.

That’s good news for the village of nearly 600 people. When the prison becomes fully activated, it’s expected to generate more than $122 million in expenditures, $19 million in workers’ income, and a

$61 million impact on local business sales.

The prison was built in 2001, but remained empty because the state couldn’t come up with the money to operate it. In 2012, the federal government bought the prison from the state for $165 million.

The latest progress report shows that about 250 prison staff positions have been workforce is expected to reach about 1,100.

A group of new prison hires just started in September, Village President Vicky Trager said. In addition, more

than 90 minimum-security inmates have arrived at the prison’s satellite camp, and 110 more are expected.

Local business activity is picking up as the activation progresses, Trager said.

“There has been an uptick in interest in developing properties. We’re getting cold calls inquiring about available sites – it seems as if businesses are becoming true believers.”

Durbin, in a news release, said he has been impressed by the work that has been done at the local level to bring the prison online.

“From Realtors to shop

owners to school principals, the community has been working hard to accommodate the region,” he said.

But even amid all the optimism, Durbin and Trager said funding will continue to be the key component to full activation of the prison.

“We live and die with what happens in Congress,” Trager said. “We are hoping for quick approval for the next phase of activation budgeting.”

Bustos said she plans to continue to closely monitor the activation progress.

“Once the prison is fully up and running, it will not only alleviate the overcrowding of our nation’s prison system, but it will give a further economic boost to this region,” she said.

“I hear from businesses all over the district that in making their decisions to locate somewhere, that when a city is easy to deal with, and they have a one-stop shop and get assistance from the city, it makes a huge difference to them,” Bustos said. “Congratulations!”

Dollinger and her husband entertained then-Lt. Gov. Simon in their home when he came to Lanark High School to address

the graduating class of 1970.

“One of the things he said was about small communities. ‘How hard they struggle to maintain an existence.’ He commented that it did not appear that that was the case in Lanark. He saw evidence everywhere of residents and businessmen making improvements to the community,” Dollinger said.

“What was apropos in 1970 is very evident in 2015. We are seeing a lot of positive things in our community.”

“My Dad was Simon’s chief of staff,” Bustos said.

“Also working for Simon at the time as his legal person was (U.S. Sen.) Dick Durbin.”

Cassens expressed her concern with the school district’s declining student enrollment and the effect it has on school funding.

“A huge concern is the possible property tax freeze being consisted by the state,” Cassens said.

“If taxes are frozen, that

will not allow us to add to our funding needs. It will “Everyone wants to see lower taxes, but a property tax freeze would not allow us to properly fund the educational needs of our children.”

Bustos recognized the district for its approval of a school funding referendum that allowed the district to add classrooms and expand its cafeteria and gymnasium in 2011.

“It says a lot about a community when they pass a referendum,” Bustos said. “So many referendums statewide have not passed.”

“The Eastland School District is a wonderful district. It’s a consolidated district, and our kids do extremely well. We think we have a premium school district,” Knutti said. “And just in Lanark, we have a doctor, a dentist, two law store – we still offer residents all the services anyone needs.”

I have nothing new to report in regards to the budget impasse other than we still do not have one. Instead of staying in Springthat we were elected to do, we adjourned until Oct. 20.

Delaying to negotiate a solution or agreeing to a compromise is going to cost taxpayers more and more money. We are far past the $4 billion gap that was originally stated during budget negotiations in May. Some statistics show the gap has doubled up to $8 billion. that big of a gap.

We have to reform current practices to help save taxpayer money for the future. Letting the courts make decisions for elected and is not helping solve this budget disaster. We need a balanced budget, structural reforms

and to make sure we take care of the people who cannot speak for themselves.

I have said on multiple occasions, but I will say it again, we Illinois. I will not falter in taking our message of reform from the citizens of Northwest Illinois to I put faith in the words of former President Ronald Reagan: “In this present crisis, government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem. From time to time we’ve been tempted to believe that society has become too complex to be

managed by self-rule, that government by an elite group is superior to government for, by, and of the people. Well, if no one among us is capable of governing himself, then who among us has the capacity to govern someone else? All of us together, in and out of government, must bear the burden.”

Fall season ripe for home improvement fraud Police Department warns that fall is prime time for fraud

By KATHLEEN WEBER For Prairie Advocate SHANNON — Do you surf the Internet? Use a phone? Get mail? Own a home? The Shannon Police Department wants to make sure that you do not become the victim of a scam.

The department presented the Internet Crimes, Scams and Investigations presentation at the Shannon Fire Department meeting room Sept. 29.

The morning event was co-sponsored by the Shannon Police Department and the Carroll County Triad, an initiative that includes local law enforcement, community resources, and social service agencies, striving to improve the quality of life for the county’s seniors.

Sergeant Randy Craft of the Shannon Police Department said fall is a particularly opportune time of year for frauds to occur for home improvement projects, given homeowners’ urgency to make updates before winter’s arrival.

“This time of year somebody might come to your door offering to blacktop your drive or re-side your home. Those are people you need to be cautious of; you didn’t call them, they came to you,” Craft said.

That message echoed

throughout the presentation: Groups and individuals engaging in fraudulent schemes most often are the ones approaching or contacting their potential victims.

“If they call you, they should know your date of birth, social security number, and address. They should not be asking for it,” said Shannon Chief of Police Rick Cass. “Do not give out that information to unsolicited callers.”

The Village of Shannon’s door-to-door solicitation ordinance was made tougher last month to discourage groups or individuals from approaching resident’s homes without a permit any time of the year. Each solicitor is now required to file a form and pay a $20 fee to the village clerk’s office 7 to 10 days prior to when they wish to solicit. Local youth groups raising funds are exempt.

An often-used approach with seniors is the grandparent scam, where an individual phones and poses as a desperate grandchild. They ask the “grandparent” to wire funds and will instruct them to call when they

SAVANNA – Flooding from the previous day forced the cancellation of the second phase of Plum River cleanup operations Sept. 19. The work will continue next year.

Heavy rains caused problems in western Carroll County, especially just south of Savanna near Thomson on Sept. 18. The Johnson Creek dike was breached in several places.

National Weather Service reported 4.8 inches of rain within a few hours in Thomson. The excess rainRiver.

Morrison will shop land at sewer plant site Council also eyes uses for lots on southwest side

MORRISON – The city is going to take another crack at selling property at the future site of its new sewer plant.

The surplus property, slightly more than 2 acres, is on U.S. Route 30, just south of the Morrison Institute of Technology on Portland Avenue.

The city will put the land up for bid for the second try was a partial success.

“We put this up for bid about 6 weeks ago, and we sold a log house on the property, but the buyers didn’t want the rest of the acreage,” City Administrator Barry Dykhuizen said.

The land is part of about 12 acres the city bought for its sewer plant project. The parcel is zoned for commercial use, and the city has no use for it.

The city will submit its loan application for the new sewer plant to the EPA after

Young Leaders initiate countywide backpack program MOUNT CARROLL – Last winter, as schools were deciding to close because of the cold weather, the Carroll County Farm Bureau Young Leaders came up with the idea of initiating a backpack program for those elementary students in our county who might be food insecure.

“We know there are a number of students who partake in the free or reduced lunch program in our county,” said Young Leader Chairman Jeremy Flikkema. “As important as it is to call off school for weather, we also know those students are dependent on the food. This is another way for farmers to help feed the world.”

Flikkema said that, working with the school districts, the

needs for those who are food insecure were evaluated.

“The program began last spring with a trial run after the needs were assessed,” he said.

“This allowed for any kinks to be worked out along with costs to be evaluated before starting a yearlong program.

The program kicked off again this fall when school started back up.”
