Advice on how to give until it feels good An introduction to Morrison, Mount Carroll and Lanark Community Foundations

MORRISON — For more than 60 years, the syndicated advice column Ask Ann Landers, a pen name created by Chicago SunTimes advice columnist Ruth Crowley, was a regular feature in many American newspapers. One piece of

advice she gave is a suggestion regarding charitable giving: “Do your givin’ while you’re livin’, ... then you’ll be knowin’ where it’s goin’.”

In the Sept. 9 issue, the Prairie Advocate began a series about three area foundations that were formed to help make that givin’ decision a bit easier.

The Morrison Area

Community Foundation is presented in this week’s third installment. The Lanark Area Community Foundation was featured the lighted the Mount Carroll Community Foundation.

Each independent organization is managed by a local board of directors, and is an Foundation of Great River

Bend, a 50-year-old regional organization that serves a 17-county area in western Illinois and eastern Iowa.

Whatever form the charitable giving takes, experts and entrepreneurs agree that such activity can on the individual, family or company, as well as the charities and institutions they support.

Through its network of Community Foundation of Great River Bend works to address the challenges faced by rural community foundations in the area, everything from avoiding fund fees and charges, to IRS requirements and industry compliance regulations, to simply deciding which group to donate to, and how to do it. MORRISON – Morrison Area Community Foundation exists because of its donors – people who partner with the organization to address emerging needs and create vibrant solutions to make the community a better place.

The mission of Morrison Area Community FounTo enhance and improve the educational, cultural, recreational and economic environment of the City of Morrison and surrounding areas.

“We assist individuals, families, businesses and organizations in meeting their charitable giving goals by supporting the causes that matter to them,” said Bill Shirk, a Morrison attorney and chairman of MACF.

“Dr. Ike Vandermyde and his son, Dr. Dick Vandermyde, were both physicians in Morrison for many years,” Shirk said. “The young Dr. Vandermyde decided he wanted to give back to the community. He contribution that started the foundation. He was going to start his own foundation, but as others have seen, decided to utilize the Community Foundation of the Great River Bend.”

Letters and Commentary Modern agriculture is killing our natural world

INGRAM Guest Columnist Modern agricultural practices of cutting down trees to get just one-half acre more of cropland, and constantly cutting roadsides and waterways, eliminating fence rows and poisoning our air and water as farmers attempt to kill everything except the crop they want, have taken their toll.

The end result is killing not only the target plants and insects, but other insects, such as honeybees well as the many species of

birds that feed upon those plants and insects.

As these poisons work their way through our food chains, they will eventually get to mankind, that is, you and I. If we are to save our birds and animals, we must stop this senseless destruction that is being recommended and paid for by the federal government using our tax dollars.

We must stop the mowing of roadsides and the cutting of trees and preserve as many remaining fence rows as possible. We must bring back woods and prairies

wherever possible.

A simple way to do this would be to require that, before any government payments of any kind be received by a farmer, 1 acre out of every 40 be set aside without any management.

Creating the habitat is just one step that is needed. The government must change the recommendations that these chemicals be used for such things as no-till farming.

No-till farming has been recommended to save our top soil from erosion, but these chemicals are killing everything in the soil, creating a sterile desert in which one crop can grow, but only for a limited amount of time, before it, too, cannot grow in the monoculture desert that is being created.

Somehow, we must go back to organic farming so that our food is not contaminated

by these poisons. Only after we do will our cancer rates start to reduce, and will more people and animals be able to live to a ripe old age, rather than dying too young from cancers and other ailments caused by these poisons.

Neither the FDA nor the EPA is doing anything to protect mankind or the environment from any of these poisons, as they have too many ties to the chemical companies making the poisons.

his week is National Farm Safety & Health Week, and the 2015 theme is “Ag Safety Is Not Just a Slogan, It’s A Lifestyle.”

As harvest is just around the corner, we all need to remember to be safe this fall.

Safety is just like everything else in life, it is a lifestyle that we adapt to the point we don’t even realize we are being safe. The Carroll County GIS department is in the process of putting together a 2016 plat book that will be out in December, just in time to make the perfect Christmas gift for that hard-to-buy farmer! These plat books will be just like the ones the

One telepharmacy opens, while another backs out Milledgeville project not happening ‘at this time’

Another telepharmacy, which had been slated to open in Milledgeville, however, apparently is off the table.

In a telepharmacy, a pharmacist off-site inspects and are dispensed by on-site technicians.

Lanark Pharmacy opened July 31 at 102 N. Broad St., in the former Shumway Building downtown. Kip and Karrie Sabinson, of Warren, own it and the Warren Pharmacy. Karrie is a registered pharmacist, and Kip is a pharmacy technician.

Andrea McElroy and Naomi Bronski, both of Lanark, are their local pharmacy technicians; McElroy manages the Lanark shop, which also sells a full line of over-the-counter products, vitamins, and, soon, Hallmark greeting cards.

McElroy said the pharmacy is fully stocked with brand name and generic pharmaceuticals, but assured customers that they can order early if they are worried about running out of their prescriptions.

McElroy and Justin Rausch of Lanark bought the building last year from Weston Burkholder, who had operated an athletic training business, Platinum Performance, there for 4 years.

Sabinson said he and his wife learned of the opportunity from one of their pharmaceutical suppliers.

They got in touch with McElroy and Rausch in late 2014 and worked out the details.

Remodeling started in April.

“Work will be done by telephone and computer,” McElroy said. “Prescriptions will be approved by Karrie in Warren, accessible by computer. You can talk to the pharmacist, come in and drop off prescriptions, and pick them up the same day.”

slated to open by the end of October in the Gibbs Building, at the junction of state Route 40 and Milledgeville/ Polo Road in Milledgeville.

A half-dozen community investors raised $50,000, but TelePharm LLC, a digital health care company based in Iowa City, Iowa, that had committed $200,000 to open the pharmacy, has pulled out of the deal, Village President Galen Wirth said Sept. 14.

He declined to provide further details.

TelePharm consultant Alex pharmacy would not be put in “at this time.”

Calling it a “private deal with the community,” he, too, declined to say why the project fell through. He did say TelePharm, which requires local investment in its sites, is “still in talks” with the village.

SHANNON – Shirley Schrader, Shannon’s “Tab Queen,” and her husband, Don, are celebrating 20 years of collecting and recycling aluminum pop can tabs in support of Ronald McDonald House in Madison, Wisconsin.

Founded in 1993, Ronald McDonald House has served thousands of families, including Schrader’s family.

“In 1995, when he was 5, our oldest grandson was sick, in the hospital in Madison for about a week,” Schrader said.

“His family would take turns visiting with him while they stayed at Ronald McDonald House. That’s when we found out about the tab program.”

Now 25 and healthy, Michael Fox, the son of Michael J. and Tami Fox of Forreston, is a Forreston High School graduate living in Bethalto, near Edwardsville, where he attends Southern Illinois University.

“He’s getting married next June, too!” Schrader said.

Schrader’s family also utilized Ronald McDonald House this summer, when their granddaughter, Cheyenne Zubler of German Valley, was in the hospital. Cheyenne is the daughter of Joe and Michelle Zubler.

MOUNT CARROLL – The Carroll County Health Department reported Sept. 16 that a collection from a mosquito trap near Savanna has been conNile virus.

“In general, you expect to see West Nile virus toward the end of the summer and into the early fall, so it’s not surprising that we have a WNV-positive mosquito batch,” CCHD Environmental Health Associate Douglas Lieb said. “We will all have to be extra vigilant about mosquito couple of heavy frosts.”

Annually, mosquito surveillance is done by health department staffs throughout Illinois. Traps are set out among the participating counties which collect female specimens (male mosquitos do not bite).

The females are then collected twice each week and analyzed in house for the

• Make sure doors and windows have tight-fitting screens. Repair or replace screens that have tears or other openings. Try to keep doors and windows shut, especially at night.

• Eliminate all sources of standing water that can support mosquito breeding, including stagnant water in bird baths, ponds, flowerpots, wading pools, old tires, and any other receptacles. In communities where there are organized mosquito control programs, contact your municipal government to report areas of stagnant water in roadside ditches, flooded yards, and similar locations that may produce mosquitoes. presence of West Nile virus.

People older than 50 have the highest risk of severe West Nile illness.

Hot rods pass through during Hot Rod Drag Week

LANARK — With the sound of rolling thunder and the smell of racing fuel exhaust passing south on Broad Street, Lanark felt the power as 350 vintage cars headed toward the Cordova International Raceway in Cordova during the afternoon and evening Sept. 16.

The entourage were part of the National Hot Rod Association’s 11th annual Hot Rod Drag Week, a grueling 5-day

four city Mid-West Tour covering 1,000 miles on the road and four quarter mile time trial events in three states.

Gene and Nancy Byington of Lanark let local residents know that their son-in-law, Pete Holm of Oregon, and his mechanic, engine builder Steve Eden from the Stockton/ Elizabeth area, were participating and would be passing through Lanark on their trek to Cordova, although they weren’t spotted.

Savanna mayor kicks off bid for state House McCombie makes first campaign stops in Savanna and Morrison

By MICHAEL MILLER For Prairie Advocate SAVANNA – Mayor of Savanna Tony McCombie kicked off her campaign to unseat state Rep. Mike Smiddy for election in Illinois House District 71 on Saturday at Marquette Park in her hometown.

Carroll County Republican Central Committee Chairman Clint Elmore introduced McCombie, along with state Rep. Brian Stewart, R-Freeport.

Elmore called McCombie “strong willed, high energy” and someone who wanted to make “positive change for all.”

Under clear blue skies, and with the Mississippi River in the background, McCombie delivered brief but emotional remarks.

“I am very blessed to call Savanna my home,” she said, acknowledging her family, who stood with her as she announced. “Your love, guidance and support has made me a strong

Q & A with candidate Tony McCombie

By MICHAEL MILLER For Prairie Advocate SAVANNA – Tony McCombie, who on Saturday began her candidacy for the Republican Party nomination for state representative questions about her campaign in an email interview last week.

“I want to be the representative for the 71st District to continue my service to a broader region,” McCombie said. “I will actively participate and communicate with our residents, school districts, businesses and organizations to support and encourage growth. I will strongly champion and defend all of District conviction that has been lacking.

“We need to grow our communities, our district and our state. I want people to see what I see in Illinois. I want people to see what we have to offer in Illinois and I want people to stay in Illinois.”

Regarding some of her main platform issues, McCombie said, “Locally

within the district, I will promote our communities to build economic development; listen to local leaders, hear their concerns and assist where I Mayor Tony McCombie can; promote regionalism and collaboration on local, state and federal levels; lead with a level of transparency that is typically unfamiliar to residents; actively participate with local leaders, residents and events during the campaign and after I am elected.”

McCombie said she will always sit at the table to represent District 71.

“At the state level, I support change and Gov. [Bruce] Rauner’s reform agenda, especially areas of term limits, redistricting, workers compensation reform, lawsuit reform and prevailing wage reform,” she said.

“To state the obvious, the State of Illinois is a mess! Both sides of the aisle, as well as union leaders and community leaders, know something has to change. We need to start doing the right things to build our state, not

Missiles light up Broncos After a 30-minute light-

quarter of an NUIC Upstate home game against Orangeville, Troy Litwiller, the Missiles’ senior quarterafter the delay and fooled Orangeville for a 61-yard run around the right end, and the Milledgeville scores kept coming in a 46-6 win at Floyd Daub Field.

Litwiller’s score put the Missiles up 14-0. The quarterback also made his mark on special teams, posting his team’s next score on a 40-yard punt return. That score gave the Missiles their fourth special teams touchdown in 4 weeks.

The Missiles had outgained the Broncos 288-11 by halftime, with the Missiles’ defense collected 10 tackles for loss, and an additional six stops for no gain.

“The new pagers we use today are great,” Phillips said. “If we aren’t in position to see the room light in the hall, the pager goes off, too. Much faster response time for the resident.”

Phillips said the individual room designs and cafeteria are more familyfriendly today.

“It’s more like home,” Phillips said. “There is more privacy for families when they visit, and more room.”

“Laundry used to be in the basement, with no elevator. We had to bring everything down stairs, wash it, dry it, then bring it back upstairs. Getting was a big step!” Bush said.

The Resthave “family” has seen many changes, too. But that’s what Phillips and Bush love about their jobs.

“I have a lot of family visitors and volunteers see me and say, ‘Oh, you’re still here!’” Phillips said.

“We all become part of our residents’ families. They never forget us, and we always remember them.

“It’s sometimes hard for people to give up their homes, their independence.

But we help them accept that this is their new home, and we try very hard to be good to them, and be kind, so that they are content,” Phillips said.

“I dearly love the residents,” Bush said. “We lift them up, and they lift us up!”

“It’s a rewarding job,” Phillips said. “How many jobs can you say give back like this?”
