Good Samaritan Society to celebrate its founding By Prairie Advocate staff MOUNT CARROLL – The Good Samaritan Society-Mount Carroll is joining Good Samaritan Society locations across the nation in celebrating the founding of The Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society. The Good Samaritan Society was incorporated on Sept. 29, 1922, and on March 1, 1923. Over the years, the society has grown from serving a handful of residents to being the care and services for seniors. our organization’s rich history, but we also honor and celebrate with our staff members and the people we serve,” said Cathy Smikle, the administrator at Good Samaritan Society-Mount Carroll. The 2014 Martha Stewart American Made Awards received entries from every state, with more than 3,000 nominees. Two Mount Carroll businesses entered the contest, and both of them are among the 1000 “We’re just thrilled,” said Mary Kernan of New Morning Glass. “It is so cool that this tiny town in Northwest New Morning Glass, 113 W. Houzenga said that the majority of the ideas for her Zenga’s line of “beautiful imperfections” stem from seeing things differently, re-inventing them to take on a whole new dimension of life. “In 2008, I left a full-time teaching position (High school english and elementary art), when the board of education threatened the students’ art programming, which resulted in a worked in sales, public relations, marketing and hospitality for many years, and given my passion for art, it was only natural to establish my studio, inside Imaginarium – Now & Zen Gallery, in downtown Mount Carroll.

“When I stop to think of the beautiful part of the country I live, where it’s affordable to do what I’m doing; the amount of freedom I have as a female, thanks to those who have come before me; the many supporters, friends and family who have stood by in admiration, though they worried some over my decisions; the variety of musicians, artists, writers, and performers, that also call the Midwest their home, who come together as a vibrant community when they’re called upon; and the growing visibility that social

media has established, to make it that much easier to communicate with like minds and reach a broader audience, I feel I am blessed.”

The couple met when they were assigned to work together in a glass blowing course at Eastern Oregon University, LaGrande, Oregon. Thirty years later, their business, New Morning Glass, still inspires, supports and transforms them. “It has always been about the

combined creative passion and skills that we share for glass making,” Kernan says. “Four years ago we started a new project, doorknobs. We have developed a beautiful, unique product that is very common but with our touch adds an artistic element to any door.” “Someone asked how long it takes to make a doorknob. I tell them 34 years,” Doebler quipped. Kernan said that making doorknobs is a joy. “But the hardware was our challenge. We ended up designing our own mounts. Our mounts are solid brass made in Northern Illinois. We work with a wonderful metal artist in Rhode Island for our hardware trim sets with hand cast back plates.” The couple love being in Mount Carroll, and their love of community and what they do is evident in their work. “Our studio produces glass work, which includes custom stained glass windows, fused glass jewelry, hand blown glassware and knobs. We teach stained glass classes, and teach 1-day glassblowing workshops on Saturdays during the fall and winter,” Doebler said. “One of the past American Made top 10 contest winners made metal combs for men,” Kernan said. “Who would have thought that a simple, everyday item like a comb would attract so much attention? “We are making a common, functional object into a unique, artis-

Theater raising money to buy digital projector By MICHAEL MILLER For The Prairie Advocate SAVANNA – The new owners of Savanna Times Theater – Lars, Kathy and Chip Colgan – are raising money to buy a digital projection system, needed because movie companies no longer distribute movies in a 35 mm format. With the help of The Savanna Train Car Museum, the Colgans are

Recreation: A job description for pool manager will be created and the job will be advertised next summer. Fundraising has raised $400. Chairs must be purchased before the 2015 season begins. Streets and properties: Debris has been cleaned up at the Point Rock Park entrance, and a score board for the park has been ordered. Repairs on East and Benton streets are done. Sidewalk repair for 100 and 200 blocks of North Carroll Street were discussed. A parking request by Jill Bess was denied. Cemetery: There has been stone repairs, and members agreed to send a letter to a resident near the cemetery for an ordinance violation regarding property cleanup. Police: The Council OK’d hiring Jason Schwartz as a parttime officer. Finance: Chairman Tom Charles noted that the city will be seeking bids for commercial insurance coverage. Clerk Julie Cuckler got the OK to attend a workshop and training. Alderman approved an inter-fund loan of $21,000 from the bond and interest sinking fund to the sewer fund.

New business Mayor Carl Bates noted that DeBauche Communication has submitted a permit to install fiber optic cable in the city right of way. Cuckler said she had not heard back from the engineers or Maintenance Supervisor Rusty Handel, and Bates suggested tabling the issue until more information can be obtained. The cable would be extended up State and Lincoln streets. Bates advised the council that MediaCom will be increasing its rates again. Citywide cleanup day is Oct. 4. Cuckler reported that Gov. Pat Quinn sent a letter regarding the passage of the transportation capital bill program. She said that in the past, the city had received $7,500 as a grant. Friends of the Mount Carroll Township Public Library go the OK to conduct a raffle from Sept. 15 through Dec. 6. The next meeting is Sept. 23 in City Hall.

NFIB/Illinois designates key votes in the Legislature that owners as important to the success of their business. Every 2 years, the group tallies the votes to determine how lawmakers fare on small- business issues, state Director Kim Clarke Maisch said in a news release. “Clearly, legislators like Sen. Peggy Rae (Pacey) Woker passed away on Sept. 13, 2014 at her home with her family by her side. Peggy was born April 5, 1951 in Woodstock to Harold “Stub” and Mary Lou P a c e y. S h e lived in Richmond until she was 14 and her dad’s job was transferred to Pearl City. She graduated from Pearl City High School in 1969. On June 21, 1969 she and Gerald Woker were married at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Pearl City. Peg and Gerald farmed side by side for their entire married lives near Pearl City. Peg was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Pearl City, Stephenson County Farm Bureau, AMPI, and was a volunteer for the Stephenson County 4-H for many years. Together Gerald and Peg served on committees such as the Stephenson County Ag Breakfast and together they managed the milk and doughnut booth at the Stephenson County Fair. She looked forward to the fair every year. Spending time with her granddaughters was her favorite pastime. She enjoyed listening to them play the piano and watching them play softball. Peg also was an avid bowler, and in her younger days, enjoyed golfing at her uncle’s golf course. She also

Peggy is survived by her husband of 45 years, Gerald Woker, her children, Aaron Woker of Pearl City, Brenda Woker of DeKalb, and Deanna (Christopher) Fink of Lanark; two spunky granddaughters, Samantha and Katelyn Fink of Lanark; her mother, Mary Lou Pacey of Pearl City; brother Gord (Lynn) Pacey of Kent; sisters, Rose Kuhlemier of Forreston and Pamela (Ron) Conkey of Lena; sister-in-law, Karen (Merle) Endress of Chetek, Wisconsin; brother-in-law, Gary (Karen) Woker of Thomson; and several loving uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. Peggy was preceded in death by her father, Harold “Stub” Pacey; brother’s Robert “Big Bob” Pacey, and Dale Pacey; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Wayne and Neva Woker. My name is Kayla Hinrichs. A week after graduating from Illinois State University, I began my career adventures with the Illinois Farm Bureau as a manager trainee. I am very thankful for the opportunity to work for the Farm Bureau and I look forward to one day working for a county. I am from Athens, in Menard County. My passion for agriculture started at a very young age, when I spent hours upon hours in a tractor with my grandfather. I was in love with riding in the big equipment, the secret stash of candy under the arm rest, and and with coming up with reasons why my grandpa and I should eat before noon. I never truly understood how important agriculture was at that time, but that all changed once I got into high school. I was the athlete who played all the sports and had very little time for other activities, but then I was permanently injured and told I no longer could play sports. Because I had all this extra time, I was able to dedicate it to FFA. I became “that girl,” the one who attended almost all the FFA conferences, camps, and conventions, all the Career Development events a girl could dream of, and even had the privilege of serving as Section 14 president. Because of FFA, I was able to gain friends from all over the state, travel, and develop skills such as public speaking, run-

MORRISON â€“ Paint the Town returns for its 20th year Saturday in downtown Morrison. The day begins with the Harvest Hammer 5K Run/Walk and 21-mile bike ride.Also offered are kids races and team and individual events, all starting at Morrison High School, 643 Genesee Ave. The kids races begin at 8:15 a.m., the duathlon at 9; day-of registration begins an hour beforehand. A color run also is planned this year. Visit harvesthammer.org for information on fees, prizes, age classes and a registration form. As the race concludes, crowds will venture downtown for a day of painting the streets. The festival also will feature live music, Billy the Balloon Guy, a magician and more.

‘Soldier, Come Home’ features local actors

One-act play has ties soldier SAVANNA – Rehearsals for the one act play, “Soldier, Come Home’, are in progress at the Savanna Museum and Cultural Center. The play is based upon family letters exchanged during the Civil War. The two lead characters are Mary, played by Mary Jo Frederick of Mount Carroll, and Philip, played by Savanna resident John Gloor. “Many of the lines and speeches in the play are the likes of which Ernest Hemingway would have been most proud,” said Director Al Cairo, also of Savanna. On a historic note, Philip Pringle, the Civil War soldier that most of the play is based upon, served in the Army of the Potomac along with other Pennsylvania soldiers. “Coincidentally, Jacob Plattenberger, a Savanna leading citizen for many years following the war, served with the same military unit as Pringle. It is quite possible that they fought side by side in many of the battles,” said Jean Ferris of the Savanna Historical Society. A mannequin portraying Jacob Plattenberger, from Gene Wright’s Gallery of Civil War soldiers, will be on display during the performances. The remaining characters and supporting cast, in the reader’s theater presentation, will be performed by presenters Mark Klein, Beaver Miller, John Pokornik, Zachary Timm, Roman Timm and John McConnel. Production members include Kathy Mangler and Contessa Ehlers. The play will be performed at 7 p.m. Oct. 3 and 4 and 2 p.m. Oct. 5 in the Community Room of the Savanna Museum and Cultural Center, 406 Main St. Suggestion donation is $9 for adults, and $5 for children 17 and younger. New state law protects American black bears, mountain lions and gray wolves SPRINGFIELD â€“ The gray wolf, American black bear and mountain lion, or cougar, will come under the protection of the Illinois Wildlife Code on Jan. 1. Senate Bill 3049 gives the Illinois Department of Natural Resources the authority to manage these species for the protection of both wildlife and the public. All three species were present when settlers arrived in Illinois, but were all but gone from the state by the mid-1800s. Because of improved legal protections and habitat restoration, these species are returning to some of their former range in the eastern United States. â€œWolves, mountain lions and black bears have been absent from Illinois for more than 150 years. As the populations of these animals continue to grow, we expect to see occasional individuals dispersing from their current ranges into Illinois,â€? IDNR Director Marc Miller said in a news release. â€œThis law gives the department the ability to create long-term management goals and to draft response protocols on

‘Putting It Together’ cast starts rehearsals SAVANNA – When “Putting It Together” premiers later this month, it will be under the direction of James Beaudry, executive director and producer at Timber Lake Playhouse. Beaudry, who’s been involved with more than 50 Timber Lake productions, including “Chicago”, “Cats”, “West Side Story” and “Grease”, is well known to area theater patrons. His credits also include productions from Off-Broadway, New York Musical Theatre Festival, and Haven Theatre. He has served as a peer reviewer for Oxford University Press, Music and Dance Division, and been featured in Dance Magazine, Dance Spirit Magazine and Backstage. The Castle Players feature actors from Florida, Louisiana and New York. Michael S. Dunavant is producing, and Nicholas Kaminski is music director. Kaminski, originally from New Jersey, recently served as the alternating music director/assistant atre’s summer season. His credits include “Fiddler on the Roof”, “A Chorus Line”, “Spamalot”, and “Eric Whitacre’s Paradise Lost: Shadows and Wings”. Kaminski, a Rutgers University graduate, is the son of Grammy-nominated compose, Stephen Kaminski. Dunavant, Havencrest Castle’s curator and event director, has added another facet to his repertoire, that of producer. “It is a privilege to work with this cast. They are an enthusiastic group and ‘Putting It Together’ showcases their talents to the optimum,” he said. The show will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 26 and 27 and 2:30 p.m. Sept. 28; doors open 30 minutes before each show at the theater at 800 Chicago Ave., which is not handicapped-accessible.
