Other Savanna council business SAVANNA – The Savanna City Council also took the following action at its Sept. 8 meeting. • Sharon Pepin, Community Funding and Planning Services of Stockton, told the council that initially there was only one loan application for the entire wastewater treatment facility project. But given the high numbers on the opening bid, the plan was to move forward with the in-system sewer portion of the project, with modifications to be done to the wastewater treatment facility portion and then rebidding it. The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency said the loan would be broken into two parts. Pepin said documentation would have to be redone, and a loan ordinance would have to be amended. Both plans have been approved by the EDA, from whom the city has received a $2 million grant, but
the modifications to the treatment plant design would again have to be approved by EDA and EPA engineers. The council approved the changes for the IEPA loan application, for a fee of $6,900 to CFPS. • Approved requests for partial reimbursement for demolition of homes at 607 Chestnut St. and 711 Third St., in the amount of $2,500 each. Mayor Tony McCombie said that after these expenditures, $2,500 of the grant money slated for this purpose is left. • Awarded the bid for the Bowen Street water main project to Fischer Excavating of Freeport for $218,233. • Approved the temporary closure of state Route 84 from Division Street to Chicago Avenue from 6 to 7 p.m. Oct. 1 for the West Carroll homecoming parade. – Michael Miller

Plant garlic this fall LANARK – With soil freezing in the next couple of weeks, now is the time to get garlic planted. “Garlic requires a long growing season and it’s necessary to plant it in the fall in order to harvest it in June,” said Grant McCarty, local foods and small farms educator. “Many people forget about planting it, and then it is too late when the soil freezes.” McCarty said garlic comes in softneck and hardneck types. “You want the hardneck type as it performs better for our climate. Some hardneck varieties are Carpathian, Spanish Roja, and Music. Vegetable growers in the area may have additional varieties they may sell you.”

Superior Young Dairy Producer Award program Aug. 22 at the Illinois State Fair. Jared Dickman and Connor Erbsen, both of Lanark, were recognized with Brock Irwin, Belvidere, Sadie Ropp, Strawn, and Riley Zettle, Rock City, as $1,000 scholarship winners. Thirty-one 4-H and FFA dairy project members from across Illinois took part in the event to create an educational activity that promotes youth development, career development, and personal growth through increased knowledge of the dairy industry. This three-phase competition emphasized the youth’s knowledge of the dairy industry. The $5,000 in scholarships was sponsored by Archer Daniels Midland, Decatur. Individual plaques, sponsored by Land of Lincoln Purebred Livestock Breeders Association and Illinois State Fair, were awarded to the top three

Plant the clove in the same direction as it comes in the bulb, with 5 to 6 inches between cloves in a row. “You need to mulch the garlic with 6 inches or more of straw. Let’s take into consideration Hardee’s’ new burger, the Single AllNatural Burger. According to Hardee’s, it is a grassfed, free-range charbroiled beef patty with no added hormones, steroids, or antibiotics, topped with natural cheddar cheese and tomatoes. They make this sound good for you, right? Before we start discussing the description, let’s look at the nutritional information. Remember last week, I said how we should look at the back of the package, not the front? The back is where the info regarding what is really in the product is located. To begin with, this burger has 840 calories in it. There are 1,110 milligrams of sodium and 56 grams of fat. Do I need to go any further with the nutritional info? It has only 3 grams of dietary

SAVANNA – The city of Savanna has a little less timber along its streets, as Savanna Public Works aided Foley Tree Service of Clinton, Iowa, in cutting down or trimming 15 trees in the past few weeks. Savanna Public Works Superintendent John Lindeman said that his criteria for trees to be managed were the health and condition of the tree. “A good portion of the trees we removed had extensive dieback and splits in the main structure of the tree. There were several trees that we were able to trim out the dead branches that pose a safety issue, while saving a majority of the tree,” Lindeman said. “Replanting will be something done down the road. We will also take careful consideration of what type of trees are planted, and how they will critical seasons for their survival.”

Tasty ‘mush’ potatoes By GLORIA YODER Potatoes: Is there any other plant grown in our gardens that produce a more versatile food than an ordinary potato plant? Potatoes can be used in countless ways whether they’re shredded to be used in a potato salad, fried for breakfast or used in one of the thousands of potato casserole
recipes that are out there. This spring as I cut up our seed potatoes, I explained to our 3-year-old Julia how potato plants will grow from the tiny “eyes” peeking through the skins. Isn’t that amazing? Like any other seed it has to die in order to bring life: A new plant, bearing fruit. When thinking about seeds I’m often reminded of a spiritual aspect in our lives. When

The following day I made “mush,” Daniel’s favorite dish made with potatoes. Mush is a German word we used for mashed potatoes. Daniel likes when I make a
nature and confess our sins to God, we too, can walk in newness of life. Back to our potatoes. Several years ago my husband Daniel and I enjoyed helping each other harvest our potatoes. With a shovel in hand Daniel did the more strenuous work of turning the sod over one scoop at a time. I followed behind picking up the potatoes, tossing them into a bucket and dumping them into the
kettle with potatoes and turn it to mashed potatoes. I’ve discovered that leftover mashed potatoes can come in quite handy. They can easily be reheated after being refrigerated or frozen. You may want to add a dash of milk when heating leftovers as they tend to thicken after setting awhile. If you choose to freeze them you’ll notice that they’ll be a bit lumpy, but once they’ve thawed
out, simply use a whisk or beater to whisk them into the original smooth, creamy texture once more. A great way to use leftover mashed potatoes is to make “mush patties.” They taste somewhat like mashed potatoes with an added fried to enjoy. In fact, one of the men at our church told his wife that to him it’s worth having mashed potatoes simply to have the leftovers turned into mush patties. You may want to serve them with gravy or ketchup or if you’re like me you may want a dab of sour cream on the side as an added bonus. Do you remember the cream stick recipe I shared with you several months ago? It does sound crazy, but you may recall mashed potatoes are one of the key ingredients. This week I’d like to do a rerun of the mashed potato
recipe we had several weeks ago due to some errors include the mush patty recipe as well. To “Danielize” this recipe, I added pepperoni cut into small pieces along with diced onions and peppers. He was really impressed with them, which tickled me.
Mush Patties
2 cups mashed potatoes 1 egg, beaten 1/4 cup flour 1/4 t baking powder 1/4 t black pepper 1/2 t salt 1/4 cup chopped onion (optional) 1/4 cup diced peppers (optional) 1/2 cup pepperoni, cut into small pieces Cheese of your choice Mix everything together. Then put four 1/2 cup dabs of the mixture into a frying pan with butter. Fry on medium heat until golden brown on each
side. Top with a slice of cheese if desired.
Mashed Potatoes
6 quarts of potatoes, peeled and cubed 1-1/2 T salt 1/2 cup butter 4 ounces of cream cheese 3/4 cup evaporated milk 2 – 4 cups whole milk or cream, adding a little bit at a time to achieve right consistency Fill a 6 quart kettle with potatoes. Add 1-1/2 inches of water and cover with a lid. Bring to a boil. Simmer until potatoes are fork tender. Drain off water. Mash potatoes until smooth. Add remaining ingredients and then mash everything together. A heavy duty mixer also works well instead of mashing by hand. Melt an additional cup of butter on medium heat. Continue heating until butter is browned. Drizzle over mashed potatoes.

But you have to wonder what his speech writers were thinking to have him asking Congress to spend more on ice breakers on the same trip where he’s predicting more warming. Perhaps he really knows what many scientists are claiming: Arctic ice is growing – with updated NASA data showing polar sea ice is approximately 5 percent above the post-1979 (the year satellite instruments began measuring the ice caps) average. This, despite former Vice President Al Gore’s claim that the Arctic ice cap could be completely gone by now. In fact, according to the April 1896 edition of National Geographic, Alaska, glaciers have been retreating there since George Washington was president. In a September 4 Wall Street Journal op-ed, Patrick Moore, one of the co-founders of Greenpeace, said: “It is a historical fact that the glacier in Glacier Bay began its retreat around 1750. By the time Capt. George Vancouver arrived there in 1794

When John Muir, founder of the Sierra Club, visited in 1879, he found that the glacier had retreated more than 30 miles from the mouth of the bay, according to the National Park Service, and by 1900 Glacier Bay was mostly ice-free.” Another thing surprised me about his trip. wonders.” Yet, with all this planning for dramatic effect, there were no polar bears — not even mentioned . . . since they’ve become the symbol of Al Gore’s global warming scare, you’d think he’d at least mention them while he was in there — after all when people think of Alaska, they think of polar bears. What better imagery to evoke? Once again, perhaps his speech-writers were aware and the besmirched Charles Monnett (whose observations of drowned polar bears helped galvanize the global warming movement), and reports of rebounding polar bear populations. While they don’t get much mainstream press coverage, several scientists are reporting an unprecedented increase in the world’s polar bear population. One of the foremost authorities on polar bears, Canadian biologist, Dr. before the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works. He said: “Of the 13 populations of polar bears in Canada, 11 are stable or increasing in number. They are not going extinct, or even appear to be affected at present.” In his book, Landscapes & Cycles: An Environmentalist’s Journey to Climate Skepticism, biologist and ecologist Jim Steele argues: “glaciers have retreated and expanded numerous times since the end of the last ice age. Polar bear numbers are at record highs with approximately 25,000 bears. And Arctic sea ice, which had precipitously declined from the mid-2000s to 2013, has had a reversal since then, now equaling historic levels considered normal.”
