What to know before you go The Bureau of Prisons job fair will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 16, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 17, and from 9 a.m. 5 p.m. Sept. 18 at AUSP Thomson, 1100 One Mile Road in Thomson.

Those who plan to attend should be aware that, at the fair, resumes could be helpful, but are not required, nor is proof of citizenship, although you must be a U.S. citizen to work for the BOP. No one will be hired at the fair; those who qualify will be notified, and interviews will be scheduled.

Cheri Bustos Caught Misleading Voters Again Promised to take 10 percent pay cut but pocketed the money

Yet as soon as the shutdown was over, Bustos pocketed the pay without missing a dime as a result of the shutdown.

LANARK, IL— Congresswoman Cheri Bustos lied to voters in the last election saying she would voluntarily give back 10 percent of her salary if she won election to Congress.

Furthermore, Congresswoman Bustos has removed references to her giving up her pay from her website and from her Facebook page.

Then during her first year in office Bustos also led voters to believe she would forego her Congressional pay during the government shutdown.

When questioned later, an aide to Bustos said that Bustos’ exact request was to have her pay withheld until the shutdown was resolved— not be docked for the two weeks government wasn’t functioning as she led the public to believe.

She ignored both promises and instead pocketed the money.

Bustos has not apologized for misleading voters. Recently, she ran away from reporters who tried to ask her about her broken promises after an event for a ribbon cutting in Peoria.

Bustos’ campaign manager, Jeremy Jansen, responded that she “misspoke.” He said “Cheri Bustos has been a leader in fighting for more Congressional accountability,” yet Bustos’ own actions, and the media’s coverage of it show the opposite of accountability, if not arrogance toward voters.

“Bustos is a typical politician who will say or do anything to get elected” Bustos promised several times to the Chicago Tribune editorial board in 2012 she would give back 10 percent of her pay voluntarily —words which were recorded in front of a room full of editors and reporters. To ensure there was no misinterpretation, the editors pressed Bustos repeatedly on the question.

Here is a transcript of the exchange: Cheri Bustos: “And I’m saying, though, this is a vote. That every member of Congress takes a 10 percent pay cut, and there’s a pay freeze until we—we get this under…”

Interviewer: “I’m sorry, I’m confused. Are you—if you’re elected—are you saying to whoever the HR department is—”keep 10 percent of my pay.” Are you—it’s yes or no.

Are you going to voluntarily give up ten percent of your salary?”

Cheri Bustos: “I’m saying that—yes. And I would—I would take a—I would propose that there is a vote to cut 10 percent of the pay for every member of Congress.”

Interviewer: “But you would do it regardless?”

Cheri Bustos: “I’m sorry?”

Interviewer: “You would do it regardless of how the vote turns out?”

Cheri Bustos: “Yes.” Instead of owning up to her broken promise, Bustos lashed out at her opponent, former Congressman Bobby Schilling, in a way that backfired. The Rock Island Argus characterized Bustos’ attempt to change the subject as hypocritical: “Bustos attacks Schilling for supporting program she also backed.”

Her opponent, Bobby Schilling, has called on Bustos to give back a total of 10 percent of her salary for the past two years, which totals $34,800, to a charity for veterans. Schilling said: “Promises made should be promises kept.”

Schilling is in a strong position to make such a demand. In 2010, he promised to refuse to participate in the Congressional pension. He kept that promise. Schilling additionally promised not to take Congressional health care. He kept that promise too.

Schilling said he would work to open up the Rock Island Arsenal for more work and he succeeded in passing three vital pieces of legislation that have been hugely beneficial to expanded work at the Arsenal. He pledged action on replacing the obsolete I-74 bridge in the Quad Cities, and he got that done. Prepa-

rations are under way and construction will begin in 2 or 3 years. While in Congress, Schilling also cut his budget by 11 percent and gave $110,000 back to taxpayers on top of that.

Bustos does participate in the lucrative Congressional pension.

While in office, Bustos made another promise on her pay that she also reneged. Bustos voted to shut down the government in October 2013, rather than defund Obamacare. During the shutdown, Bustos at first refused to answer questions about her paycheck.

It wasn’t until the day after a tough line of questioning from local reporters that Bustos requested that her pay during the shutdown be withheld. She made a big splash in the media about doing so.

The media proceeded to widely report that Congresswoman Bustos was giving up her pay: QCOnline: "Bustos Foregoes Pay During Shutdown, Durbin Unsure" Peoria Journal Star: "No Government, No Pay for Rep. Cheri Bustos" Sauk Valley News: "Bustos Won't Take Pay" Washington Post: "Bustos 'has asked that her pay be withheld during a shutdown,' according to a spokesman."

CNN: "Bustos' not accepting a paycheck.'"

Bustos is a former journalist and communications director for over 20 years and has a Masters’ degree in communications. Words come easy to Cheri Bustos. As a result of her words and her actions, there is no surprise she now is being criticized for acting like the worst of the worst professional politicians.

It is clear now that Cheri Bustos never had any intention to donate 10 percent of her salary back to the government, or forego her pay during the government shutdown for which she voted.

With clever words, Bustos talked about supporting a bill for a 10 percent pay cut she knew would never pass. At the same time, she unequivocally repeatedly promised she would take a 10 percent pay cut even if the bill did not pass.

Critics say Bustos simply “promises you everything she thinks you want to hear.”

Recently, MSNBC included Cheri Bustos in a story about women in politics. They asked Bustos “what one piece of advice would you give to young women looking to pursue a career in politics today?” Bustos’ answer is surprising in light of her own actions in government.

She responded: “Do what you say you’re going to do. Follow through. Exceed expectations. Reputations matter, in politics and every field. You want to be known as someone who can be trusted to get things done and stick to your word.”

Reeder Report Sometimes we need a break from mobile technology SPRINGFIELD – I bought a “new” phone the other day. My 6-yearold, Anna, gave it a perplexed look.

“Where’s the buttons, Daddy?”

“There isn’t any, dear. It’s what’s called a rotary phone.”

She gave it another skeptical look and walked away. Yes, when I dial, I actually dial.

An hour or so later, when my wife got home from work she, too, gave it a bewildered look and said, “Why did you install that old thing?

It doesn’t even have caller ID. How will we know whether to answer the phone or not?”

Folks, it’s not about nostalgia.

Sometimes, I think I just need a break from technology.

Growing up, all the phones in our house had dials. The idea of push-button technology was in its infancy. No one ever got stuck in voicemail hell.

Flash forward 40 years and now he carries a cellphone with him wherever he goes. I’m the same way – mobile electronics seem to be taking over my life.

My kids make bookmarks at school but I have no way to use them with my Kindle.

I bicycle 17 miles daily, but not through the country roads of Sangamon County. Instead, I’m on a stationary bike at a gym, peering at movies on my iPad. And I have a phone in my pocket with an app for just about everything but curing cancer.

But, gosh, it’s hard to escape the constant stream of communication. Anyone can reach me anytime.

Facebook posts, tweets, emails and phone calls pour in constantly.

And my 8-year-old, Grace, loves to play games on the device.

When I was a kid, I was told a phone was nothing to play with. Today, they are a source of entertainment.

When I walk into a restaurant, I see faces young and old enthralled with whatever is on that tiny screen.

Don’t people talk to one another face-to-face anymore?

Installing a dial phone won’t make those frustrations go away, of course. But it does remind me of a simpler time when it was possible to hang up on mobile technology – without pushing a button.

MOUNT CARROLL – Area residents can learn the basics of safe hunting at a free 2-day hunter safety course being held from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sept. 27 and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 28 at Van’s Country Sports Store, 9452 VanBuskirk Road.

Class size is limited and advance registration is required.

“This will be an excellent opportunity for hunters who need the course in order to qualify for their hunting license,” said Clark VanBuskirk, master instructor with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. “It can be advanced hunters, even those born before Jan. 1, 1980.”

The minimum 10-hour course includes instruction in wildlife management, firearms safety,

regulations.

State law requires that all hunters born on or after Jan. 1, 1980, successfully complete the hunter education course before license.

In addition, people who want to hunt in other states often are required to complete the course regardless of their age.

Participants must provide their Social Security number, and those who complete the course will tion card.

Carroll County approves zoning amendments

In a March 2013 report card on the condition of infrastructure by the American Society of Civil Engineers gave Illinois a dismal D-plus grade.

About 73 percent of Illinois roads are rated to be in poor or mediocre shape, according to the report. If not to road repairs, where does the increased revenue every year go?

“The state of Illinois is now a ‘Medicaid state.’ It has surpassed all other areas of spending,” he said.

In 2003, Illinois’ Medicaid payments were $4 to $5 billion – it has doubled in 10 years, he said.

“Carroll County is a beautiful, spectacular part of the state,” Durkin said. “When touring the area with Rep. Lawfer back in 2002, I remember the rolling hills, and saying, ‘This is not the Illinois I live in!’ It was a refreshing visit.”

Also in 2002, Michael Madigan was into his 18th year as speaker of the house in Illinois. Madigan’s 30-year reign makes him the longestserving speaker in state history, having held the position for all but 2 years since 1983.

Durkin hopes to not only end Madigan’s tenure, but also to begin a new era of economic prosperity in Illinois.

“If Mike Madigan and [Senate Majority Leader] John Cullerton maintain their super-majorities, expect a permanency to the ‘temporary’ income tax increase,” Durkin said. “Expect a millionaire’s surcharge, which will destroy our farmers and small businessmen by either running them out of the state, or out of business, and expect them to place a Constitutional amendment on the ballot to impose a progressive income tax – or what they refer to as a ‘fair tax.’

“That’s just the start of it.

Then there will be more of the antibusiness agenda that will simply be an extension of what they have done for the last 10 years.” leadership in the Governor’s House will make a difference.

Considering that Illinois has never had more revenue in its history, Durkin addressed his views of the real problem with state government.

“It is not a revenue problem, it’s And you can’t go back and blame the ‘Great Recession.’ Neighboring

But Durkin believes the solutions are not too little too late. “I saw [Gov.] Rick Schneider do it up in Michigan. We have to get Bruce Rauner elected. “Healthcare is a very good goal – if we can afford it, and if we have a revenue source that will pay for it.

However, this is going to be coming directly out of our general revenue funds. It’s just going to put greater stress upon our public education funding, our infrastructure, public safety, and the list goes on of things that are very important.

“This is NOT the American Dream that I had, growing up in Illinois in the ‘70s. Failure is not an option. That’s why I am here with Jim Wozniak [Rock Island Republican candidate for the state District 71 House seat held by Democrat Mike Smiddy of Hillsdale], to educate people on how important this change is needed. It’s about taking Speaker Madigan out of the super majority.

“We still haven’t caught up on our bills. We’re still $5.3 billion in the hole, per [Comptroller] Judy Baar Topinka. Unemployment is still

high, and there has been no structural change in the form of government.

It’s just been more of the same.”

Durkin says the reason for Illinois’ decline is obvious. “The states around us are run by Republicans.

I’m telling it like it is. They’ve made

The Castle Players join area theater lineup SAVANNA new community theater group, The Castle Players, will perform the musical “Putting It Together” for its inaugural performance Sept. 26-28.

The theatrical company was formed to bring live theater to the Carroll County area beyond the summer season provided by other local organizations, said

Online course teaches weather basics for boaters

By Prairie Advocate staff For boaters or anglers in northwest Illinois, knowing the forecast and understanding the weather can mean the difference between smooth sailing or slogging through uncomfortably rough conditions, whether it be on the Mighty Mississippi River, or Lake Carroll.

Weather for Boaters is a new easy-to-follow online course from the United States Power Squadrons and the BoatUS Foundation aimed at teaching boaters the basics of weather and forecasting.

Among other things, participants will learn: to recognize and prepare for storms; to interpret cloud formations and wind shifts; to spot early signs of changing weather and to prepare for lightning and thunderstorms; to understand weather elements such as

We’re enjoying our stay with my husband Daniel’s family in Danville, sisters – who still live next door with Ohio. Our 2-year-old daughter Julia’s highlight this week was going to too, and one of them will soon be at my her Uncle Tobias and Aunt Fannie’s doorstep, delighted to give me a ride.

They also do lots of bare back house. They have a nice pond where riding. You can only imagine how all excited when Tobias offers to take proud Julia is to be perched on top of a pony with one of her aunts. Of course,
