LANARK – AmeriCorps members nationwide are having their Gloves 4 Troops “Opening Day,” honoring the great game of baseball, as they collect lightly used or new baseball gloves and balls, as well as thank you cards and letters, baseball books, magazines, baseball hats, shirts, and more, to send to our troops overseas. “Our Campus AmeriCorps volunteers in Macomb at Western Illinois University, passed the idea on to me. Gloves 4 Troops is our way of honoring our service men and women on 9-11,” said

musical talents. Residents of Lisbon, Portugal, the Bests are visiting family in Freeport. Ken plays the French horn with the Lisbon Symphony Orchestra. Maria plays the flute and teaches music lessons. They gave a demonstration of their
instruments, talked about the symphony and conducting an orchestra, and played some rhythm games with the students. Brouhard said that to hear from professional musicians was perfect timing for the opportunity to join band this year.

City continues to mull having administrator

S
eptember is National Chicken Month. Here in Illinois, chickens lay more than 1.17 million eggs a year! This ranks us the 22nd highest producing state. Illinois has 2,367 chicken farms. A female chicken that is raised for eggs is called a laying hen. Laying hens sit on the eggs for 21 days until they hatch. About 278 million laying hens produce approximately 6.1 billion eggs per year in the United States. A common misconception in agriculture is that chickens are raised using hormones. The federal government prohibits poultry farmers from using hormones. Another popular idea is that cage-free hens are happier. But are they? If caged, the hens do not have to worry about being attacked by other hens. They have space to spread their wings without having to have added stress. We were fortunate enough here in Carroll County to have been able to make our voting membership quota that was set by Illinois Farm Bureau. I have been manager for 9 years. Over the course of that time, we have made our voting quota 8 out of those 9 years. Unfortu-
nately, we have not been as lucky with our total quota. Our membership is down about 160 members from where it was in 2006. As times change, we realize our quotas are going to be harder and harder to make. Lack of new bodies, along with new farmers, in Carroll County will present challenges for us. The Women’s Committee hosted a meeting last week on reading labels. It invited Katie Pratt from rural Dixon, a spokesperson for the U.S. Farmers and Ranchers Alliance. Katie grew up a farm girl, married a farm boy, and they along with their two kids live on a grain and soybean farm in Lee County. I have seen Katie speak at the Illinois Farm Bureau Young Leaders discussion meetings and she has always impressed me. At our meeting with Katie, she spoke on what we see on the front of the labels at the grocery. We all have many, many choices out there when it comes to our food choices. You can choose a food without an organic label or one that has one; there is the choice between GMO and non-GMO; there is the choice between all natural, etc., etc. But do we as consum-

It is all a marketing ploy. The truth is on the back of the label and the nutrition facts. For example, organic Kraft Mac & Cheese has more fat than regular mac and cheese. As a mom, when I am grocery shopping, I know I am more worried about the sugar, the fat, the sodium content of the food than I am about what the front of the package says. By MICHAEL MILLER For Prairie Advocate SAVANNA — For the second time in a year, the Savanna City Council heard a lengthy presentation regarding the dynamics of hiring a city administrator. This time it was Morrison Mayor Everrett Pannier who detailed his experiences with the governmental form and the various ways it aided and advanced his city. Pannier said during the council’s Aug. 25 meeting acts when he was elected 2 years ago was to not renew the city administrator’s contract. In general, he said, the issue driving that decision was poor communication between the city administrator
and city Pannier said that he felt that Savanna was in a Everrett Pannier position where it did need an administrator, going forward, and that it was key to be very careful in picking the correct one for the job. He said that often the question of, “Can we afford an administrator?” comes up. “The real question is, ‘Can we afford not to?’” Pannier said. He said hiring an
administrator was a way of “elevating the city” and slotting someone full time to the needs of a city. “That person can pay for themselves, time and time again.” Other duties of the Morrison administrator include labor negotiations and overseeing the construction of the city’s new wastewater treatment plant. Asked about the salary for such a person, Pannier said Morrison’s had a starting salary of about $70,000, with a total cost to the city of around $97,000 with
his city administrator is “worth his weight in gold,” taking the lead on many city projects including a sports complex, the sewer plant and others. “I would not want to think that I could run the city as well as he can,” Pannier said. “A good city administrator keeps you in the limelight, understands your citizens, understands your department head needs, works with those, uses them, and lets the department heads function as they should.” The matter is still under discussion by the Savanna City Council.

But to decide to whom to give it and how large and when, and for what purpose and how, is neither in every man’s power nor an easy matter.” For the next 3 weeks, the Prairie Advocate will present information about three area foundations that were formed in order to help make the decision-making a bit easier. Part 1 will feature Lanark, the newest founda-
tion, established a year ago. The Morrison Area Community Foundation, Mount Carroll Community Foundation, and Lanark Area Community Foundation are independent organizations managed by a local board of directors, or “ambassadors.” All three foundations are Foundation of Great River Bend, a 50-year-old regional organization that serves a 17-county area in western Illinois and eastern Iowa. LANARK – The idea ate community foundation in Lanark stemmed from residents participating in MAPPING the Future of Your Community, a program sponsored by the Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs at Western Illinois University in 2013. The Lanark Area Community Foundation Board president is Floyd Roberts, owner of Marketing Communications Corporation. “Both Lanark Mayor John Huggins and I realized during the visioning sessions the importance of zation that is available to develop funding programs,” Roberts said. “After completing the MAPPING program it was clear our community wanted a vehicle to ensure that our
community’s charitable programs were supported now and in the future. “We hand-selected our board members, and now have an outstanding mix of personal and professional interests represented.” LACF board members include Vice President John Nelson, president of Exchange State Bank; Rosemary Flikkema, secretary, owner of The Special Touch Flower and Gift Shop; Tom Kocal, editor of the Prairie Advocate newspaper; John Huggins, mayor of Lanark; and Dan Lamoreux and Jeremy Flikkema, both partners in their respective family farm operations. Because of the complicated nature of creating a foundation, they sought the council of the Community Foundation of Great River ate of the organization in September 2014. “We knew that if we did it right – meeting state

Community Foundation helped us focus on organizing correctly. “And right away, two of our board members each provided a $10,000 scholarship program,” Roberts said. John and Yvonne Nelson have established a permanent fund, creating an instrument that will forever Eastland preschool special education students. They are a group that Yvonne holds near and dear, as she worked with special ed preschool children for many years at Eastland. “It’s money that the Eastland district can use for anything the teachers need for these special kids to help give them a good start in school,” Nelson said. “They will receive a check from the foundation every year, theoretically forever.”
Rosemary Flikkema and her family created a family endowment for a perpetual scholarship in memory of her parents, Theodore and Marilyn Pilat, created to permanently fund science scholarships. “Mom was a registered nurse during World War II, and Dad had an engineering degree. Science was important to both of them,” Flikkema said. “As we were growing up, my parents stressed that it was most important to get your education so that you could do something good for the world, succeed in whatever you do, and support yourselves. We hope to pass that along to the next generation with this scholarship.” “These programs convey a wonderful statement of support for education in this community,” Roberts said. organizations. “I am very pleased that the major groups working on Lanark improvements and economic development. The reason for the existence of the LACF was due to the MAPPING process last year, so we chose two groups that were formed as a result of MAPPING,” said Roberts. The Cornucopia committee was awarded a $500 grant in February, recognized for their efforts in enhancing the Lanark Farmers Market in 2014. The Transformers received the second $500 grant for their efforts in “transforming” the downtown area and developing new activities and festivals with a and generating customers in the downtown area. Obituaries Daniel Kent Herman
LAKE CARROLL – Daniel Kent Herman passed away at the age of 75 at his home in Lake Carroll under hospice care with his family on Sept. 5, 2015. His passing was caused by kidney failure resulting from past radiation treatment for prostate cancer. Dan was born to Oliver and Grace Herman in Mount Carroll, where he lived throughout his childhood. He was a graduate of Warren High School, and received his mechanical engineering degree from Bradley University. After graduating, he united with Nancy Herman (Kruger), his wife of 54 years. Dan was employed at International Harvester/ Navistar for 42 years. During his time there, he was chief engineer of the truck engine division, and spent his last 10 years in marketing and sales of buses. His family lived in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, and in Naperville for more than 25 years. Dan was a loving and generous family man who had four children, Brian (deceased 1970), Susan Kelzer, Kevin (Elizabeth Soukup), and Mark. Dan has four grandsons: Matt and Joe Kelzer, and David and Alex Herman. In addition to being survived by his wife, Dan is survived by his older brother, David (Dorothea Hinze). Dan was an incredible He enjoyed working on machines and building various projects for his family, friends, and home. After retirement, his interests turned to woodworking projects and his new found love of ATV’s. Dan was a member of the Lake Carroll Association in many areas, including founding the trail club for ATVs.

Kevin Vandendooren, Carroll County Highway Department chief engineer, informed the board of the situation with the state delaying payments of the Motor Fuel Tax until a state budget is passed. “We are currently projectHighway Fund due to our not receiving Motor Fuel Tax funds and [there are] rumors indicating we may not see the funding for an additional 6 months,” Vandendooren said. He said the department has not received a MFT payment from the state since July, making it $48,000 short of what it expected to receive. THOMSON – In conjunction with Thomson’s Sesquicentennial celebration, special events were offered Saturday at Thomson Community Church, featuring memorabilia from previous Melon Days festivals, and heard memories from residents, past and present, wishing to share. “I think the day is turning out well,” said Sesquicentennial committee member Luanne Bruckner. “We have seen a lot of interest in the displays, and we are especially happy to have the McGinnises here.” Sisters Donna McGinnis French, and Cindy McGinnis Schleuning, along with sister-in-law Debbie McGinnis, were happy to participate in such a grand celebration of a well-known Thomson tradition.

Donna recalled her amazement at how many tourists would make a stop at the market after they traveled to Michigan for peaches, and Wisconsin for apples. “It was so ungodly busy at that time of year. Cars parked around and down the block. We had to have

That’s how it all got started. It’s grown from there, and is still going.” Residents viewed a photo slide show full of photos and memories, and keeping with tradition, free, juicy watermelon was served, donated by Bim and Debbie McGinnis.

After trailing by six points at the half, Milledgeville rallied for the 26-17 football victory against Freeport Aquin Friday evening at Floyd Daub Field in Milledgeville. Tro Litwiller, Brexton Flynn and Buddy Bibler scored touchdowns for the Missiles. Jason Brubaker and the Missile defense added a safety. Litwiller scored on a 52 yard punt return and Flynn scored on a blocked punt. Milledgeville (2-0) travels to AFC on Friday to play the Raiders while the Bulldogs (1-1) host Durand.
Thunder shut out ‘Catz, 40-0
West Carroll piled up 439 yards of total offense as they rolled to the 40-0 win over EPC in Lanark on Friday night. The Thunder defense was also stingy as they held the ‘Catz to 162 yards of offense. West Carroll held extended that lead to 26-0 at the half. Two more fourth quarter margin of victory. Ethan Mangler led the West Carroll ground attack, rushing the ball 15 times for 146 yards, Logan Barker added 107 yards and three scores while Eric LaShelle ran for 59 yards and a TD. The Thunder (1-1) host South Beloit on Friday night while EPC (0-2) travels to Pecatonica to battle the Indians.

Groezinger on young Central College roster PELLA, Iowa — Donny Groezinger, a 2014 Eastland High School graduate from Lanark and member of the IHSA 2A state champion Eastland-Pearl City Wildcatz, is ready to play for the Central College football team for the 2015 season. Groezinger, of Lanark, (5-9, 190), is freshman defensive back who has made an impression on Head Coach Jeff McMartin, who listed Groezinger as a freshmen who could see some early action at cornerback. Other area freshman teammates include running back Max Barkalow, a member of the 2014 IHSA 1A state champions Forreston Cardinals, and Thomas Fox, a linebacker from Stockton. Fulton’s TJ Huizenga, is a junior linebacker, earning a varsity letter in his sophomore year. Jordan Fox, quarterback, is a sophomore from Stockton. McMartin is concerned with the lineup decisions his staff is facing as just four starters return defense. -

Central is the third-winningest NCAA football team since 1975 (.800). McMartin has an 87-29 (.750) record, and is in his 12th season for Central. His teams have won four Iowa Conference titles with four NCAA Division III playoff appearances.

Fulton four-corners signs The Fulton Chamber of Commerce replaced and doubled the marquee signs located at the four corners of Fulton to welcome those visiting or passing through. Grant monies were awarded to the Fulton Chamber by the D.S. Flikkema Foundation trustees, and supplies for the signs were purchased locally. Two chamber members volunteered their time building and installing the signs. This allows the Fulton Chamber to notify the public about events. (Courtesy of April EdwardsEshelman)

The love of cooking runs deep intended for him to be. I still love preparing Daniel’s favorite dishes. I admit,

As a young boy from age 10 to 15, he was responsible for mixing up the bread dough in his household. Those of you who knead your bread dough by hand know that it requires effort and toughening up if done repeatedly. He had the recipe memorized and knew exactly what consistency the dough needed to be for “Grade A” bread.

I made a mild remark about it as I served it to my new husband. “Isn’t that what you call burnt?” he asked teasingly. “Okay, call it what you want,” I responded. I knew that he would never make fun of me in a mean way. Five and a half years later, we still enjoy talking about my burnt casserole. His sharp taste buds have many times proven to be a blessing for me. I especially like having his input when I’m making a large batch sauce to can. If we have guests for dinner I always
summon Daniel over to the stove to do some last minute taste-testing before they arrive. Daniel’s love for herbs and spices is rubbing off on me. I love collecting all kinds of them. Recently I cleaned out my cupboard with seasonings. I admit I was aghast when I took a count of how many different shakers and containers I had. There were over 60! Some of them are mostly used in canning, others were duplicates that I had stocked up on and still others were what I keep on the windowsill behind the stove for easy access in everyday cooking.

Gloria’s Deluxe Scrambled Eggs
6 eggs, beaten 1-1/2 cup milk 1/2 t salt 1/2 t garlic powder 1 t prepared mustard 1 t liquid smoke (optional) 3 slices bread (cubed) 1/4 cup chopped onions 1/4 cup green or red
peppers diced 1 cup shredded cheese, divided 1/2 lb. sausage, browned 1/4 lb. bacon, cut into pieces Brown bacon in a large skillet. Remove bacon and lightly saute onions and peppers in bacon drippings. Add remaining ingredients, saving 1/2 cup cheese. Sprinkle on top once eggs are done. Mix together and continue heating on medium high stirring constantly until eggs are set. Or if you prefer, pour everything into a 9” pan and sprinkle with remaining crumbs. Bake at 350 for 35-40 minutes or until eggs are done.
