Eastlake is an architectural style. Eastlake is a selection in furniture.

Charles Locke Eastlake was an English architect who unexpectedly set the home building trade upside down in the latter part of the 19th century.

Disgusted with the overstuffed, overcrowded Victorian architecture and furniture, Eastlake wrote and published a book in 1868 titled “Hints on Household Taste.� It was practical, direct and opinionated. Its popularity surprised everyone. In England there were four printings; in America, six.

By Prairie Advocate staff STERLING – A Milledgeville woman was injuried in a two-vehicle crash Aug. 28 at Freeport and Pilgrim roads in rural Sterling.

Police said Jennifer M. Duncan, 32, was taken to CGH Medical Center in Sterling after they responded to the wreck at 5:49 a.m. Aug. 28.

According to a news release from the Whiteside County Sheriff’s Department, Duncan was driving a Kia south on Freeport Road when she disobeyed a stop sign.

Her vehicle collided with a westbound Ford pickup truck driven by Ben A. Mattingly, 54, of Leaf River. The Kia entered the north ditch of Pilgrim Road, while the Ford went into the north ditch and collided head-on with a tree.

Mattingly and his passenger, Jeremy S. Lower, 33, of Leaf River, were not injured.

Says Libertarians ‘breaking the chain of corruption’ TOM KOCAL TKocal@prairieadvocate.com GALENA – Bill Fawell said last week he has successfully registered as a Libertarian party write-in candidate in the 17th Congressional District.

The State Board of Elections the Libertarian Party to appear on the Nov. 4 ballot. The party’s slate includes gubernatorial candidate Chad Grimm of Peoria.

The state board also voted to eliminate the statewide slates of the Constitution and Green parties for signatures.

Originally faced with the insurmountable task of collecting 14,000 signatures in order to appear on the ballot as a Libertarian, Fawell directed his attention to helping

the Libertarians’ statewide petition drive succeed.

The Independent Voter Network (IVN.us) reported that “non-established parties,” those that earned less than 5 percent of the votes in the preceding election cycle, must collect at least 25,000 valid signatures to appear on the November ballot. By contrast, the Republican and Democratic parties only need to submit 5,000 signatures.

In 2006, the Green Party garnered more than 10 percent of the votes in the gubernatorial election, but fell to around 3 percent in 2010 and had only about 22,000 valid signatures. A lawyer for the Green Party said, “The whole system needs to be revised.”

The Constitution Party, which faced similar setbacks in 2010, is off the November ballot for a second consecutive cycle. In a statement, the party argued that the state Constitution states “laws governing voter registration and conduct of elections shall be general and uniform.’”

Rick Pearson, a veteran politi-

cal reporter for the Chicago Tribune, said the board’s decisions might impact the gubernatorial race.

“In a close race, those deciBill sions could help Fawell (Gov. Pat) Quinn, who as a Democrat was more likely to lose votes to a Green Party candidate, and hurt (Bruce) Rauner, who as a Republican is more likely to lose votes to a Libertarian candidate,” Pearson wrote.

Fawell’s campaign Fawell said the Libertarian Party’s placement on the ballot “is a great victory for Illinois. We’re breaking the chain of corruption that has dragged Illinois into insolvency under the leadership of both the Democrats and Republicans, and I’m more than thrilled to be part of that.”

On the ballot in the 17th District, which includes Carroll, Whiteside and Jo Daviess counties, is U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos, D-East Moline, and former Congressman Bobby Schilling, R-Colona.

Fawell said his campaign is about restoring power to people instead of to money.

“Our government is for sale to the highest bidder, and our Congress has become a grocery, and its members grocery clerks,” Fawell said.

There are four bills he said he would support – Senate Bills 1663, 1664, and 1665, and House Bill 24, which would “restore the dynamic of the peoples’ rule over the state.”

sultants, require all federal laws and policy be passed by only Congress, end omnibus bills, and require all laws be read in Congress before a vote. a sponsor in the House,” he said. “I will sponsor them and drive them relentlessly.

Fawell said the district has been gerrymandered to favor a Democrat. “... I appeal to every citizen in the district to reconsider blindly picking one party over the other, because in reality there is not a dime’s bit of difference between the two,” Fawell said.

Fawell has lived in Galena for 15 years and is a licensed real estate broker in Illinois, where he worked in real estate and construction until the crash of 2008. Since then, his focus has been directed at changing what he considers an unconstitutional state of tyranny, which now rules over America.

Rauner, a venture capitalist from Winnetka, hopes to unseat Quinn in the Nov. 4 general election.

In reference to the recent letter to the editor by Bill Dietz published in the Prairie Advocate on Aug. 27, I would like to correct some inaccuracies and clarify some information regarding the funding bond issuance by the Highland Community College Board of Trustees.

This is the second step in the process that will allow the college to raise funds to be used for capital needs such as maintaining technology infrastructure, purchasing instructional equipment, updating and providing safety measures for the aging chemistry lab, modernizing classroom audio-visual equipment, and providing other instructional tools such as lab equipment and software.

The revenue generated by these funding bonds cannot – and will not – be used to fund the pensions of faculty, staff or retirees. This is an unrelated matter. With little exception, college staff personally contribute to their pensions that are managed by the State Universities Retirement System (SURS).

The actions of the HCC Board of Trustees in relation to the current funding bond issuance have been posted to the public per the Open Meetings Act and distributed via news release by the college on July 16 and Aug. 19.

Through the process of issuing funding bonds, college administrators and trustees are carefully managing needed educational and infrastructure upgrades and available funding sources in order to provide students and area residents with the resources, services and technology required to provide a quality educational experience in today’s highly technical and ever changing world.

Opponents argued that the legislation was a thinly-veiled effort by traditional taxi companies to protect their business and shut out competition from the ridesharing companies.

While the original measure imposed greater restrictions on drivers who worked more than 18 hours a week, the companion bill, House Bill 5331, allowed drivers to “bank” that time, so that they could work more hours during weeks when special events occurred without triggering the higher restrictions.

Speed limit veto Also vetoed was Senate Bill 2015, a follow-up measure to legislation that raised the speed limit on interstate highways in Illinois to 70 mph in January, which is consistent with most other states, including almost all Midwestern states.

Anti-crime measures A number of bills signed into law would have an impact on criminal offenses and the courts.

Among these was a measure (House Bill 3744) that would give judges monitoring in domestic violence cases, even if an order of protection has not been issued.

Another bill would provide an exemption from prosecution for soliciting a sex act, if the person is younger than 18. Senate Bill 3558 is part of an ongoing effort to address and treat young persons forced into prostitution as victims.

In an effort to reduce misidentification in police lineups, House Bill 802 would require new procedures, including preventing the person administering the lineup from knowing the identity of the suspect and prohibiting anyone who knows the suspected perpetrators identity

from participating in the lineup, aside from the witness and the defendants’ counsel.

The use of ignition interlock devices, wh ich test a person’s breath alcohol before a car can be started, would be expanded under House Bill 4304 to include cases where the person did not injure anyone other than themselves in the accident that prompted the restriction.

And in order to help prevent financial or other abuse of the disabled, Senate Bill 3538 would add to the false personation statute, anyone who knowingly and falsely represents themselves as the legal guardian of a disabled person.

Bills signed into law Each year, the General Assembly has 30 days to send legislation to the governor’s desk and he has 60 days to act on the bills.

Because the Legislature adjourned at the beginning of June, all measures must be either approved or vetoed by the end of August. Dairy Producers offer Margin Protection Program workshop

By Prairie Advocate staff Dairy farm families now have a voluntary safety net program that helps them through tough times and keeps pace with the challenges facing the U.S. dairy industry. A workshop sponsored by the University of Illinois Extension will help them make sense of the changes.

The workshop entitled “Are You Ready for the MPP?” will be from 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 15 in room H210 of the Student Conference Center at Highland Community College, 2998 W. On Aug. 28, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced the start of a new risk management program for dairy farmers, known as the dairy Margin Protection Program. The voluntary program, established by the 2014 Farm Bill, will allow dairy farmers to take steps to protect their business from economic risks beyond their control.

The Margin Protection Program (MPP), which replaces the Milk

Income Loss Contract program, gives participating dairy producers

using the new USDA sponsored MPP decision tool.

Dr. Phil Cardoso will discuss the Dairy Focus toolbox that will enhance farmers’ understanding of income over feed cost (IOFC). Understand-

MPP places an emphasis on protecting income over feed cost margins. MPP protects against severe downturns in milk prices, rising livestock feed prices, or a combination of both.

At this workshop, Dr. John Newton will lead discussions on the new MPP program, explain how it might help dairy operators manage

the best margin level and coverage percentage for your farm.

Enrollment begins Vilsack said farmers can enroll in the new dairy Margin Protection Program starting Sept. 2. The voluntary program, established by the

The online resource, available at www. fsa.usda.gov/mpptool, allows dairy farmers to quickly and easily combine unique operation data and other key variables to calculate their coverage needs based on price projections. Producers can also review historical data or estimate future coverage based on data projections. The secure site can be accessed via computer, smartphone, tablet or any other platform.

“We’ve made tremendous progress in implementing new risk management programs since the Farm Bill was signed over 6 months ago,” Vilsack said. “This new program is another example of this administration’s commitment to provide effective safety net programs that allow farmers and ranchers to

manage economic risks beyond their control. And the supplemental Web tool will empower the nation’s 46,000 dairy producers to make decisions that make sense for them.”

Development of the online resource was led by the University of Illinois, in partnership with the USDA and the Program on Dairy Markets and Policy (DMaP). DMaP partners include the University of Illinois, the University of Wisconsin, Cornell University, Pennsylvania State University, the University of Minnesota, Ohio State University and Michigan State University.

The Margin Protection Program final rule was published Aug. 29 in the Federal Register.

The Farm Service Agency (FSA), which administers the program, also will open a 60-day public comment period on the dairy program. The agency wants to hear from dairy operators to determine whether the current regulation accurately addresses management changes, such as adding new family members to the dairy operation or inter-generational transfers. Written comments must be submitted

by Oct. 28 at www.regulations.gov.

On the other hand, the mission of ISIS is global and strategic in that its leadership is determined to conquer the world, one piece at a time, and to see its flag raised above the White House.

What should be done about

ISIS and similar totalitarian movements? The answer, unfortunately, is the same as the one forced upon Allied decision makers during World War II in the struggles against Germany and Japan. This does not mean using atomic bombs or reinstating the draft. Rather it means a recognition that this organization is not going to go away by itself and that it will take a determined effort among an alliance of nations to rid the region of the barbaric madness that has overtaken it. The Kurds should be armed; regional players should be committed to the struggle; and American air power should continue to support such efforts.

Short of taking these measures,

The question is, will Western leaders summon the resolve to deal with the barbarism of today as they did during World War II? The answer undoubtedly will shape the politics of our century, in the Middle East and throughout the globe.

Pumpkins will roll at Mount Carroll fall festival Chamber plans cemetery tours and pumpkin races LYNNETTE FORTH For The Prairie Advocate MOUNT CARROLL – Area residents will be enjoying Pumpkin Fest in downtown Mount Carroll on Oct. 25. Chamber member Linda Anderson reported on the annual event during the Aug. 26 meeting of the Mount Carroll City Council.

Cemetery tours will once again be provided during the fest, with narration by Wayne Brooks. Anderson requested that a porta-potty be placed at the cemetery, along with a warming station to serve hot beverages to those volunteers re-enacting at the graves. Council members agreed to allow up to $100 for the portable bathroom.

“Wayne knows so much about the town’s history, and he is really excited,” Anderson said. “Pumpkin races will also be held again.”

“Thank you for starting up the races,” Mayor Carl Bates said.

SEARCH grant received from a U.S. Department of Agriculture SEARCH grant to conduct a facility plan of the wastewater treatment plant, and approval of a contract for $30,000 with MSA Professional Services Inc. to conduct the study.

Steve Haring of MSA congratulated the city council, saying, “It was 2 years ago that we began talking about this, and with the help of Community Funding and Planning Services, we were able to make it happen.”

Mount Carroll was one of only two towns in the state to receive this grant. The project is expected to take 9 to 12 months to be completed. Aldermen granted authorization for the contract.

Police Chief Fred Cass announced that the new squad car had been received. During the Police Committee meeting, aldermen heard recommendations and Lucas Bourquin of Warren.

All aldermen voted yes, besides Bob Sisler, who said, “I think Bourquin is a good candidate, but not the best one, so no.”

The Water and Sewer Commit-

tee reported that the sewer lining project is ongoing, and that the swimming pool had been drained. second week of September. Candidate stresses need to improve education funding by growing economy RAUNER

Rauner also said he wants to improve funding in local schools. He said Illinois has one of the lowest rates of state support for funding education.

“We are 48th out of 50 states,” he said. “I want to push and make state support increase so we can fully fund our schools and make sure every district gets proper sup-

port and funding.”

He also said Quinn has cut education funding by $500 million while taxes continue to rise.

“I’ll make education funding the top priority, and the real way to do that is by growing the economy,” Rauner said. “If we have a growing economy, we can fund our schools.”

Under Quinn, Rauner said, 4,200 jobs have been lost in Illinois this year alone.

“We are not growing, and if we don’t grow, we can’t fund our schools,” Rauner said. “I’ll get us

growing. I’ll fund the schools and make that a priority.”

Rauner also wants to put a greater emphasis on vocational training. He said Illinois has one of the highest unemployment rates in America, yet there are thousands students are not trained for the positions that are available.

“We need technical skills, computer skills, vocational training and internships for young people as teenagers,” he said. “That needs to be in high schools and part of our

What is the most dangerous part of the school bus ride? The bus stop!

Children are at greatest risk when they are getting on or off the school bus.

Most of the children killed in bus-related crashes are pedestrians, five to seven years old, who are getting on or off the bus. They are hit by the school bus or by motorists illegally passing a stopped school bus. In neighborhoods, near schools, and at bus stops, drivers need to take special care because children do not behave like adults.

SAFETY STEPS FOR MOTORISTS

Elementary school children & ecome easily distracted and may start across the street without warning. & onâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t understand the danger of moving vehicles. & anâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t judge vehicle speed or distance. & ay be blocked from view by the bus.

Most importantly, children expect vehicles to stop for them at the school bus stop.

& +hen a school bus is traveling on a two-lane roadway and is stopped to pick up or drop off pupils, the vehicles in all lanes of traffic must stop. Vehicles should stop at least 20 feet before reaching the school bus to allow pupils to cross the roadway safely. & +hen a school bus is traveling on a four-lane roadway with at least two lanes of traffic traveling in the opposite direction, only those lanes of traffic traveling in the same direction as the school bus must stop.

Pupils shall not be required to cross four or more lanes of traffic to reach their residence. & +hen a school bus is traveling on a one-way roadway and is stopped to pick up or drop off pupils, all lanes of traffic must stop, regardless of the number of lanes of traffic. & AUTION: The majority of children injured or killed in pupil trans- portation are not injured or killed on the school bus, but outside the bus.

Most of them are struck by motorists who fail to stop for the flashing red lights and extended stop arm. This area around the bus is often referred to as the - TH ." 9 & %tate law requires all school buses to stop at railroad crossings, whether or not there are pupils on board. The school bus driver will pull to the right-hand lane and display the hazard warning lights, stop the bus within 15 and 50 feet of the first rail of the rail grade crossing, open the driver window and service door, look and listen for an approaching train, and then proceed across the tracks without changing gears.

Other vehicles should not try to cross the tracks behind the school bus until the bus has cleared the tracks and there is room for the vehicle behind the bus on the other side. % B8 rail cross- ings have limited space between rail crossings and stop signs or signals on the other side of the tracks. If the school bus must make a stop after crossing the tracks, a vehicle following the bus may be trapped on the tracks until the bus moves or the stop signal light changes. This would have tragic results should a train approach the crossing and vehicles are unable to go forward or backward to clear the tracks.

SAFETY STEPS PARENTS CAN TAKE

& %upervise children to make sure they get to the stop on time, wait far away from the road and avoid rough play. & 'each your child to ask the driver for help if he/she drops something near the bus. If a child stoops to pick something up, the driver cannot see him/her, and the child could be struck by the bus. A book bag or backpack helps keep loose items together. & ake sure clothing has no loose drawstrings and backpack straps are short so that they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get caught in the handrail or school bus door. & ncourage safe school bus loading and unloading (see next page). & f you think a bus stop is in a dangerous place, talk with your school office or transportation director about changing the location. The driver will signal you when it is safe to cross the roadway. & ook left-right-left when coming to the edge of the bus to make sure traffic is stopped. Continue to watch for traffic when crossing.

Supervise children at the school bus stop. Make sure they move away from the bus, out of the Danger Zone.

Citizens push back against proposed ban on feeding ferals Heartland says colony management is working in Savanna MICHAEL MILLER For The Prairie Advocate SAVANNA – A sizable crowd of residents turned out at the Aug. 26 meeting of the Savanna City Council to speak their minds regarding a proposed ban on feeding feral animals within city limits.

Heartland Pet Welfare’s Sue Gerlach spoke at length about how its organization manages the large number of feral cat colonies within the city. She said the group’s effort is funded by a PetSmart grant of $15,600 that Heartland received in 2012.

She said the cats were live trapped, spayed or neutered, and tested for disease and vaccinated for rabies per state law, and often also were given vaccinations for distemper and leukemia. Gerlach said each colony has a manager, and the cats are fed regularly. People who live in areas where the colonies are located to food, water and shelter. Because they have been altered, Gerlach said, they are not reproducing, and are not spreading disease.

“We have all kind of stats that show that the population is controlled and begins to decrease over the years,” she said.

She spoke of a colony on Bowen Street, where in 2008 the organization trapped 26 cats. Now, according to a manager who was present, the colony is down to about 15 cats.

“We’re not doing something that is unique,” Gerlach said, “but is very progressive to this community.”

Other control methods are problematic, Gerlach said.

“If you were to try a different method of controlling, such as poisoning, you’re probably going to be poisoning people’s pets. ... If you try to relocate them, they will probably try to travel back to the community that they come from.”

Gerlach said cats being fed on a regular basis tend not to get into garbage containers and not kill birds.

Jerry Ritenhour, a colony manager on Pike Road, said, “When I moved out there, two people had or four cats, but when they moved, She (Gerlach) got them all taken care of. Right now, we’ve got four cats left, the rest of them died, and we have no new cats whatsoever. Nobody gets in the garbage; we’ve got more raccoon and coyotes out there than we do cats running around. So, I mean, Heartland is doing a good job. ... I feed them, she brings the food, and we have no problem.”

Sue Walker said that when you alter cats, you don’t “get the mating behaviors” that you see in unaltered cats. She added that “the colonies

actually decrease once you get the ing bans don’t work. It’s cruel, and these are already established colonies; that does not work. You have to trap, neuter and return them.” that the plan had been to put the matter on the agenda and allow these individuals to give a presentation at the next meeting. But since they were present, she wondered if they wanted to be put on a future agenda.

McCombie said she also wanted to hear from others who were opposed to the colonie, though no one in the audience stated such opposition. be fair to all parties concerned, and would be willing to put Gerlach on an agenda for a future presentation.

Council member Lisa Robinson asked Gerlach how efforts would be funded once the grant money is gone. Gerlach said it already is gone, and that costs would be handled “the same way we continue to fund spaying and neutering cats that come into our facility. We work very hard.

I mean, we do our own fundraisers, ... we work very closely with (Carthat set up committees and they have people within the neighborhoods who apply to have sponsoring agencies – meaning one of the four organizations within the county that help to spay and neuter animals – be a sponsoring agency, so that you’re just not randomly letting anyone set a trap, that you are trained.”

Gerlach said the PetSmart grant had been a “highly competitive one,” and that Heartland was just one of four shelters in the country that were recipients.

Council member Christine Lee asked how well publicized efforts to control the cat population have releases had been circulated, and Heartland could ask for aid from agencies outside the county to assist in spaying and neutering feral cats.

Carroll County Humane Society Board memberAnne Haliotis said that they believed they had the council’s

blessing to go ahead with the project.

But McCombie noted that discussion was during citizen comments and no formal approval was given.

Council member Jeff Griswold asked where the colonies in the city were located. Gerlach said that information was privileged, since the minute those locations were revealed they would become target areas for cat dumping.

Griswold then asked what Heartland would do if a certain area had a problem with cats but had no managed colony.

Gerlach said the organization people in theneighborhood who would manage them. McCombie wondered what would happen if the individual who was feeding a large number of cats did not want to adhere to the principles and rules of cat colony management. Gerlach said that under state law, animals that someone claims on their own are not considered feral and are required to be vaccinated. If those cats are not vaccinated and allowed to roam free,

it is a health hazard that would be handled by animal control. between the mayor and Gerlach as to whether animal control would come to Savanna for cat issues, and if so, for what. Shawn Picolotti did say that he knew animal control would come to Savanna for cat bites, but he wasn’t sure for what else.

Council member Gary Scott Law asked City Attorney Phil Jensen if there was a way to write the ordinance to exempt the situations overseen

by Heartland, while maintaining language referring to what he termed “wild animals.” He said he was conit were “doing a really good thing.”

McCombie objected to this idea, because of situations where individuals did not cooperate with the groups.

“We have to have some protection for the citizens,” she said. Jensen seemed to feel that redrafting the ordinance could in fact, accommodate Law’s idea and McCombie’s concerns.

Obituaries Duane Schupbach Duane Schupbach, 84, of Thomson, Illinois, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, Aug. 29, 2014, at Serenity Hospice Center in Oregon, Illinois, following a lengthy illness. Memorials may be given to Thomson United Methodist Church or Serenity Hospice Center in Duane’s memory. Duane also served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Haynsworth with his brother Jerry. On Sept. 22, 1956, Duane was united in marriage to Doris Larsen from Savanna. Duane and Doris worked and raised their four children in Rockford until retiring to Savanna in 1989. Doris passed away in June 2001. On July 13, 2006, Duane was united in marriage to Elizabeth

Ukena of Thomson.

Duane was a member of Ironworkers Local 498, the Masonic Lodge, Thomson American Legion, and Thomson United Methodist Church. He enjoyed collectibles, to see his family and their activities. Duane was a very generous and giving person, and had a great love and passion for his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

by Aug. 25 storm LYNNETTE FORTH For the Prairie Advocate MORRISON – The Morrison school board held a rescheduled meeting Thursday, Aug. 28, after the Aug. 25 meeting was postponed after a strong thunderstorm blew through the area. The meeting began with a public hearing on the 2014-2015 district budget, with Director of Fiscal Management and Personnel Katie Kuehl reporting, “The difference from last year is the bond because of the bonds. At this time Superintendent Scott Vance stated, “The state has caught up.

We are budgeting for four payments make up 60 percent of the budget, but we have seen a reduction of $230,000 from last year. Operations and maintenance is the biggest cause for concern, and the 1 percent sales tax would help this a lot. Transportahas dropped considerably.

“Looking at this budget is the most comfortable I have felt in a long time,” Vance concluded.

Vance noted that the high school ACT scores increased from last year. A fourth section of kindergarten has been added due to the large number of children. The junior high school custodians received kudos for the hard work that they put in over the summer, with Principal Joe Robbins noting that they have done a great job with a reduced staff. Classes are underway, and the beginning of the school year has gone well. There have been some room assignments that had to be changed, and some schedule adjustments, but considering that, all has gone well.

Kay Harwood, high school principal, reported she has implemented an incentive program for the teachers called “The Mustang Award,” which is given to one teacher a month, with nominations coming from other teachers.

The award was recently presented to Melissa Landes for her work with B.L.I.N.D (Building Lasting

Harwood also said that reading Wednesdays will continue, and have contributed to increased scores on the ACT and PSAE tests. A $172.40 donation was received from ABC Advertising from a percentage of its sales at the alumni football game.

The Key Club ran a successful blood drive in July, collecting 40 units of blood.

Harwood commended student council members, and sponsors Melissa Landes and Heather Stoudt, for planning and implementing the night on Aug. 14. Students and parents toured the school, met teachers, loaded lockers, and were given the chance to purchase PE uniforms, sign up for clubs, and put lunch money on accounts.

Vance reported that a Freedom of Information Act request was received from KWQC-TV news reporter Mark Stevens, requesting

information on the school district’s football helmets. “I sent them what I had. They must be doing some investigation into concussions,” Vance said.

Members of the Mount Carroll Boy Scouts Troop were eager to assist in mixing up the ducks and drawing the winners during the Duck Pluck at Brick Street Saturday in Mount Carroll.

Carroll County 4-H is proud to announce that 4-H’er Alex York of Lanark competed at the Academics Integrity Marksmanship (AIM) Grand Championships. The AIMS Grand is held at the World Shooting and Recreational Complex in Sparta, Illinois.

Alex competed in all three disciplines and games offered at the competition. He placed third in the pre-sub age bracket in the ATA registered 200 singles. In the 100 Handicap, he placed eighth in the pre-sub age bracket. He finished first in the pre-sub age bracket of the 50 pair doubles.

With his score of 378 broken birds out of 400, he was named Champion High points. The 4-day event is open to youth ages 8 to 18. Hundreds of youth attend the event from all over the nation. (Photo courtesy of Leanne Rahn)

Savanna council hears details on contracts, audits, and zoning issues MICHAEL MILLER For The Prairie Advocate SAVANNA – At the Aug. 26 meeting of the Savanna City Council, Alderman Bill Robinson revealed that results of the latest Contracts, Lease and Bargaining Committee indicated the city was “getting real close” to composing an employee contract. The committee hoped to be able to be present this contract to the Finance Committee then, assuming it’s approved, it will be available for the general council for review.

The council heard a rather lengthy presentation from Andrea Rumler of Winkel, Parker and Foster CPA PC, the company that

did the annual audit for the city this year. The review found that the city does not segregate duties in some areas, and recommended amending this to avoid any risk. Rumler noted that performing this corrective measure would not be cost-effective to the city, and said that there is no reason for anyone to be alarmed by In response to a question from Mayor Tony McCombie regarding how many employees would be needed to correct this, Rumler said, “I don’t know how you would ever get away from that, really.” Alderman Gary Scott Law said that city administrators often perform this function, and Rumler agreed. ings of concern in the audit, and the

The senior trip policy was approved by the board. The trip will be 3 nights and 4 days, with the incoming senior class picking its

destination and expense each May. The proposals then will be brough to the school board for approval. Board members Raymie Diestelmeier and Don McLane cast “nay” votes. The board also approved grandfathering the class of 2015 into this policy, with Diestelmeier voting no.

The board heard a presentation from Kim Keuter of the Galena State Bank, regarding the Virtue/

Gillespie/Steele scholarship funds.

Minutes from the budget and regular hearings of the Area Vocational Center Board were presented

by Diestelmeier, the AVC representative. approved closing the dormant “working cash” fund and transferring its contents to the education fund account.

This year there will be 22 scholars and 2 teachers. Our 2-year-old daughter, Julia, loves to go outside and watch them play softball at recess time.

Each morning during the academic year, the men and boys in our church take turns going to school to share a brief devotional and have prayer with the teachers and scholars. Julia and I enjoy going with Daniel when itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s his turn. Julia usually sits beside one of my sisters at their desks. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not sure who it tickles the most, Julia or her aunts!
