Three Carroll County students intern at TLP

By MICHAEL MILLER For Prairie Advocate MOUNT CARROLL — Three Carroll County students – Contessa Ehlers of Mount Carroll, Levi Skoog of Chadwick, and Gentry Lessman of Lake Carroll – are participating in a paid apprentice program at Timber Lake Playhouse in Mount Carroll.

Kaitlin Triplett of Bryon and Clarissa Worcester and Abby Langner, both from Sterling also took part in the program.

They trained in all areas of theater, choosing a focus for Ehlers, a senior at West Carroll High School and the daughter of Thomas and Karen Ehlers, chose directShe started acting at age 8 in summer theater at the Mount Carroll Campbell Center. At 9, she performed in the Wizard of Oz. She’s been in plays every year she’s been in high school.

Her favorite role was Gingy in “Shrek! The Musical” and she has enjoyed doing lighting and sound in other shows.

She was the director’s apprentice in “Soldier, Come Home” and performed multiple roles in “The Killing of Pulford and Perry” at the Savanna Historical Museum in 2014.

“In my time at Timber Lake Playhouse, I’ve learned a lot about the aspects of the theater and more of what to expect

The show, which he directed, featured 15 of his classmates and played to three sold-out performances. “I have learned a lot from the people at Timber Lake Playhouse,” Skoog said. “Not only have I participated in the internship program, I have been acting at Timber Lake Playhouse since I was 7.”

SAVANNA — Val Johnson was a caring, musical 17-year-old when she was killed a year ago in a car accident. Now a group is using city-donated property near the railroad tracks in the 300 block of Main Street to create a gardenlike community space in her memory.

Tammy Johnson, Val’s mother, hopes Val’s Garden will be an “area of beauty that will comfort and inspire others.”

Plans call for allowing others who have lost loved ones to honor them in the garden as well.

“People’s generosity is amazing. The garden is growing, and we started it less than a year ago,” said Sarah Hartman, Tammy’s sister and Val’s aunt.

Nancy Lawfer, one of the Val’s Garden organizers, had been working on green space for several years. Kathy Christensen approached her with the garden concept shortly

on a weeding day, or help with a fundraiser,” Hartman said.

That outside support has been crucial, she said.

“We have had so many donations, it’s unbelievable.

The city donated the land.

ere is more on our trip to Ireland. We drove the Ring of Kerry. This was a full day on a bus looking at beautiful scenery and more of the stone structures they have over there. I can’t imagine building all of those stone fences!

I also cannot imagine driving on those roads. They are curvy and narrow, and there were times when cars had to back up as the road was only one vehicle wide and being on a bus, we normally were not the ones who reversed.

From there we moved on to Galway as we traveled from Killarney. In Galway, it was time for their version of the Kentucky Derby. Everyone was dressed up and the ladies all had their big hats on which, in my opinion, were more like fancy hair pieces, as not much of the “hat” actually covered their head. We were able to visit another castle in which we enjoyed dinner.

That, in a nutshell, was our trip to Ireland. Would I go back? Possibly. I don’t feel the need to go back but if I did I would go on my own to explore more. There are too many other places on the bucket list to say I am heading back now.

MOUNT CARROLL — Ethel M. Sturtz, 50, of Mount Carroll, died Thursday, Aug. 20, 2015 at home surrounded by her family.

Ethel was born March 21, 1965, to Norman and Margery (Peters) Wernick in Clinton, Iowa. She attended Savanna schools and Mount Carroll High School, graduating with the Class of 1983. She later attended college and received a degree in art. Ethel married David Sturtz on June 26, 1987, in Mount Carroll.

Ethel worked at Elkay Manufacturing in Lanark and was a model worker for Rolling Hills Progres Center in Lanark. She loved cats and dogs and birdwatching, and also raised birds. She enjoyed baking, playing Farmville and especially spending time with her family and friends.

Ethel will be dearly missed by her husband, David; her children, Kevin (Shanna Carlson) Sturtz of Mount Carroll, Brittney (Samuel) Bushman of Dubuque, Iowa, Candy (Eric) Curran of Shannon, Jeremy (Bonnie) Sturtz of Milledgeville, Scott (Amy) Sturtz of Morrison, and Christofer (Cassie) Sturtz of Shannon; 13 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; one brother, Norman (Amanda) Wernick of Thomson; and several nieces and nephews. Magers stressed the importance of constant communication between emergency personnel and the railroad responders.

“There are 250 hazardous materials responders that work for BNSF,” Magers said. “Despite preventative efforts, incidents do occur.

A well informed community, working together with industry, is in the best posi-

tion to respond effectively to such incidents. Proper response actions occur only if those involved have a clear understanding of individual responsibilities.

“These measures may save lives. 99.997 percent of rail industry shipments of hazardous materials reach their destination without a release caused by a train incident,” Magers said.

In the July issue, I provided eight tips for living longer and better. One of those tips was to avoid falls.

Walking as little as 30 minutes three times a week can help you stay physistrengthen your bones, lift your spirits — and lower your risk of falls.

That’s important, because falls are a leading cause of fractures, other serious injuries, and death among older adults. Bicycling, dancing, and jogging also are good weight-bearing exercises that can help strengthen your bones.

This month I’ll expand further on that tip.

Sometimes we can become discouraged because of all the various “guidelines” we hear on what we “should” be doing to remain strong and healthy.

Discouragement can occur when guidelines are difrestrictions in our life or if we have a physical inability.

For instance, maybe we can’t walk because we’re in a wheelchair, or maybe we don’t have the strength to

The current recommendation is that every person should get 150 minutes a week of moderate-tovigorous physical activity to reduce the risk of all-cause mortality.

Analysis of 122,000 seniors from nine cohort studies followed for an average of 10 years found even low intensity activity reduced the risk of all-cause mortality by 22 percent compared to inactivity.

Medium-dose and highdose MVPA further reduced the mortality by 28 percent and 35 percent, respectively.

Studies also have shown that most of us spend a day just sitting, and growing evidence suggests this may not be good for our health.

Researchers in Australia attached an actigraph monitor to almost 700 participants for more than a week. They found 2 ours spent sitting each day was higher body mass, fasting plasma glucose, triglycerides, and cholesterol.

If you can walk, don’t allow yourself to sit more than an hour at a time without getting up to walk at least a little bit, even if it’s just to the door and back, across the house and back, or maybe around the block.

Do you sit and wait for the microwave to heat your food or drink? Don’t sit.

Just keep walking around the table or the room instead. Look for such opportunities to do some moving instead of sitting.

Watching TV? Move your arms and legs, walk or jog in place, get a mini-trampoline and bounce.

The more you move, the stronger and healthier you will become, allowing you to do even more. And when you work even small amounts of added movement into your daily routine, the improvement in health can ciently, thus freeing up more time to do more moving.

So get up, get moving, and have a great life!

The equipment was donated to help seniors get some needed movement and cardio work that can improve their physical and mental states. As anyone can tell you, a few minutes walk-

Activities at the Senior Center Recycling Senior Service earns money each year through the efforts of those who gather newspapers and aluminum cans in their communities, and those who bundle the paper and haul it to the local distribution centers. We need more help with this project. The “gathering” people work just a couple of hours a month in their communities.

The “bundlers” work at the Senior Center just about any day when they have an hour or two to spare.

And the “loaders/haulers” help load and/or haul the papers to the distribution center.

The Answer: Type 2 Diabetes and exercise

By MARK KLEIN Maybe you know someone with type 2 diabetes.

Or maybe your doctor has recently warned you that your blood sugar is on the rise and

you should watch your diet and get some exercise.

More and more people are beginning to experience high blood sugar.

Even more alarming is the increase in cases of type 2 diabetes being diagnosed.

So what is type 2 diabetes? The answer is not a simple one. T2D involves your body’s metabolism and the way your muscle cells take up and utilize sugar, or glucose, for energy.

When you consume sugar

or other forms of carbohydrates. such as bread, pasta, potatoes, etc., it becomes glucose and circulates in your bloodstream.

Normally, the hormone insulin is released from your pancreas when it detects a rise in blood glucose. Insulin then opens the doors to your muscle cells, and glucose pours in where it is chemically converted to energy.

The main problem that occurs in T2D is called insulin resistance. Your

Carroll County Senior Center collects old and broken cellphones, and sends them to a company that refurbishes them for use as emergency 911 phones in areas devastated by disasters and for sale to low-income people.

There is one collection box at the Senior Center; if the program goes well, more boxes will be placed around the county. Drop phones off from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. As always, you can help yourself to free coffee and cookies while helping us collect cellphones.

Exercise does not have to be strenuous. Moderate activity for 30 minutes, 5 days per week can make a dramatic difference in your blood sugar, and may also prevent someone who is pre-diabetic from becoming diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

New voicemail system Carroll County Senior Services Organization has a new voice mail system to help with after-hours calls, and also for businesshours callers who do not wish to be on hold.

During normal business hours, a person will answer your incoming call. If the person with whom you want to speak is not immediately available, you will have the choice of 1) being placed on hold, 2) leaving a message to be given to the person, or 3) leaving a voice mail message for that person.

In the past, if you left a voice mail message, anyone on staff could access your

LANARK — Here are three more 2015 volleyball previews of the area’s upcoming varsity teams.

Fulton Steamers

Head coach Stacy Germann leads a Fulton squad 2014 year with a record of 18-17, 9-5.

Returning players include Betsy Leonard, Averi Leitzen, Camerin Huizenga, Taylor Curley, Delaney Reed, Carly Bergerhouse, Tayler Birkett, and Jordan Price. Promising newcomers include Haylet Schrader and Brooke Huizenga.

“Two of our graduated seniors played important roles on the team last season,” said Germann.

“However, we have maintained six starters to begin our year. Camerin Huizenga will be returning to play the outside hitter position, and will be one of our strongest hitters who plays with power.

She will be an all-around player by also continuing to Germann said Camerin offers experience and leadership. Her sister, Brooke, will play the other outside hitter position.

“Much like Camerin, Brooke also has a gun for an arm. Being a sophomore, Brooke gives us a tinge of excitement knowing that we will have a strong hitter for 3 years,” said Germann.

“This group of girls has a lot of energy and have worked very diligently all summer and throughout doubles. They are truly a volleyball family and have high goals. I foresee having two strong hitters at the net at all times and I look forward to a great defense with the addition of our libero,” Germann said of her team’s strengths. Serving also should be a force for the Steamers this season.

Germann said serve-andreceive and defense must be top priorities.

“We need to be able to get a kill off of a defensive ball.

We also need to maintain a pre-determined passing and serving percentage.

Dykeman said, “Eastland, Rock Falls, Sterling Newman, Dixon and Erie all look to put highly competitive teams on the court this year. The Sauk Valley area should be able to see a lot of great volleyball this season. There are a lot of schools putting highly com-

CHADWICK — Nancy Henningsen took a break from slicing and dicing tomatoes Monday morning while her husband, Ray, was at an appointment. The her 50th year of showing at the Whiteside County Fair in Morrison this past week.

Over that span, Henningsen has shown in six different departments, judged, given demonstrations and supported the fair at the chainsaw auctions.

“I had a good year,” said Henningsen. “I took 11 things to enter at the Carroll County Fair and got eleven ribbons. Last week, I entered 18 at the Whiteside County Fair and won 16 ribbons.”

When it comes to fair entries, Henningsen is a proverbial Jack-ofall-trades, entering her handiwork in six different categories: Culinary, Floral, Hobbies, Horticulture, Ag Produce, and her favorite, Textiles.

“I mostly show in textiles now. I’ve been quilting for 35 years,” she said.

A true veteran of fair exhibiting, Henningsen has been showing at county fairs for 61 years. She started showing her hand-made clothing while in high school in East Moline, where she was born and raised.

“I lived in town, and didn’t belong to 4-H, but my mother always said I got my love of sewing from my grandmother, who passed away a year before I was born. She showed at fairs, too.”

She and Ray got married in 1961, living near DeWitt, Iowa for four years before moving to Illinois. That’s when she started showing at the Whiteside County Fair.

“I’ve also done judging at the Whiteside County Fair, and for 4-H fairs,” Henningsen said. “No particular category, just whatever they tell me to!”

The Henningsens’ property in rural Chadwick is lined with a lovely variety of floral colors, Ray Henningsen’s pride and joy. with a sewing machine.

Her husband, Ray, shows county fairs, too.

“He takes care of all the very proud of them, and I’m proud of him,” said Henningsen. “He’s the only guy that shows in the Carroll County Fair!”

Married for 54 years, the couple have three children: Son Bryon and his wife Tina, in Pierre, South Dakota; son Todd in Orlando, Florida; and daughter Lisa in Booneville, Missouri. Lisa follows in her mother’s footsteps, showing her miniature horses at both the Iowa and Illinois State Fairs, as well as various county fairs.

Sewing day success

By GLORIA YODER “Thanks so much, I’m looking forward to it,” I said as I hung up the telephone. I had been talking with Mom, warm feelings of love and my heart. Truly she’s 1 in a million. What would I do without her? Time and again I remind myself that not everyone has been given the gift of a godly mother living close by, and that I may not always live next door to her as well as the rest of my family.

This time she had called to invite me along with my sisters-in-law to their house on Friday.

“You may bring your sewing along,” she said.“And I’ll be making lunch for all of you.”

Mom knew that with having two little ones it was a challenge to get sewing

done between interruptions. Sewing is something I’ve always enjoyed and as a young girl it was on my hobby list. Now as a mother I’ve learned to enjoy it in a new way.

I debated on what I should tackle at Mom’s house. I decided to do some mending and take fabric along to make an apron for Julia and a dress that I wanted to give as a baby gift for one of my cousins. I tried to not get my hopes too high of getting a lot done, yet with my sisters there to help care for the little ones and having Mom making lunch, I was excited to see what could be accomplished.

The afternoon sped by swiftly. By day’s end we were all tickled with our accomplishments. I even took the chance of joining Daniel in the shop watching him build rustic furniture before he wrapped up for the day.
