More than 250 vendors call antique mall home Elizabeth’s Grand Antique Co. in old school district building

By MICHAEL MILLER For Prairie Advocate ELIZABETH — Michael Maynard has a simple business philosophy: “Do our best and be us.”

Maynard, his wife, Ashley, and children Rylan, Calvin, Jack and Annabelle, have brought that philosophy to life, renovating the old Elizabeth School District building at 300 West St. into an expansive, multilevel antique mall.

Elizabeth’s Grand Antique Co. has been open since April 2014 in the building, which was built in 1899.

The Maynards, who hail from Aledo, had ventured to the area as tourists for 15 years. They saw the building for sale and realized

an opportunity to start an antique mall, an idea from a neighbor of theirs, Michael said.

He quit his job as a heating and plumbing manager, and moved his family into the third “adventure and risk,” he said.

Michael saw an opportunity to create a family legacy. Business is apparently in Michael’s blood; his grandfather on his mother’s side sold his farm and started an oil company, which became the second-largest in the county, and his grandfather on his father’s side turned a profit buying properties such as a school building, an opera house and a jail.

SAVANNA — Randy Boikema, human resources manager for DuPont Danisco, spoke on the Thomson plant at the Aug. 5 meeting of Rotary Club of Savanna.

The plant takes wood pulp residue from a paper plant in northern Wisconsin and, through a complicated chemical and mechanical process, extracts four types of natural sugars that are then transformed into a sugar crystal used to sweeten food and medicinal products, include those used by diabetics.

SAVANNA — Three men and a woman, all from Savanna, were arrested Friday after a search of an upstairs apartment at 309 1/2 Main St. turned up meth and stolen property, police said in a news release Monday.

David C. Porter, 31, who lives in the apartment, and Alysha M. Hobbs, 19, are charged with possession of methamphetamine, which carries 2 to 5 years in prison, and possession of hypodermic syringes and needles, a misdemeanor.

Earl G. Rogers, 22, was charged with misdemeanor possession of stolen property; he posted $150 of his $1,500 bond and was released. What the property was was not released.

Travis M. Robertson, 24, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. His bond was set at $1,500.

The Carroll County Sheriff’s Department and the Savanna Police Department made the arrests after a joint investigation, the release said.

City aims to lower wastewater plant project costs

The previous bidding process yielded one bid, from Leander Construction Inc., which was more than $3 million over the engineer’s estimate and the city’s budget.

This occurs just after the planes and ground sprayers come through and spray their pesticides, herbicides, insecticides and fungicides onto our commercial farm

are not supposed to be killing the animals and birds, but they are. And maybe that is why our cancer rates are so high in this area.

The studies done on these poisons do not take into account the damage that is done by the nonlethal levels of these chemicals.

Insects are not always killed outright by these poisons, but they may have sublethal levels of these poisons in their bodies and when the birds eat enough of the insects, they get sick and die.

The problem is we are

sprayed, not because the but “just in case.” It is a reminder to each of us that our commercial farmers are getting too much of our tax dollars back from the government.

ago I could walk down through our prairie and have 12 to 15 red-winged blackbirds upset because I was too near their nesting sites.

Some of the males were so aggressive that they would actually strike my straw hat in an attempt to drive me away. Last week when I walked down through the prairie, I saw only one redwinged blackbird that was disturbed by my intrusion.

Last night when I walked through the prairie, I didn’t see a single blackbird, disturbed or not, during my walk.

August and the birds should still be there. Two weeks ago we still had many of them in the yard and garden. What has happened during the past 2 weeks?

For the past 2 weeks airplanes have been spraying

all of the insects, as well as the birds eating those insects. Maybe our prairie or yard and garden were not sprayed. But our birds do not just feed in our back yard. The birds may feed up to a mile away and are picking up this poison from the food, insects, that they eat.

And it is killing them.

I believe that even the high are contaminated with this poison, and that is why our chimney swifts and swallows are dying. I believe that these insects, whatever they are, that high have sublethal doses of poison and that as soon as the birds eat enough of them they will be killed.

We know that Roundup is killing our honeybees,

with some type of poison that is killing not only the

linators. In 1996 it killed all 250 of our hives in one year and has been kill-

Public Notice of CERCLA Five-Year Review for 27 Sites Savanna Army Depot Activity The U.S. Army, in conjunction with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA), completed the CERCLA Five-Year Review at 27 sites at Savanna Army Depot Activity (SVDA) in Savanna, Illinois. The Five-Year Review was completed to ensure that the selected CERCLA remedies remain protective of human health and the environment.

Five-Year Review activities included an inspection of each site; review of the monitoring data, operation data, and maintenance date (if applicable); interviews with U.S. Army, USEPA, and IEPA representatives; and determination if any new regulatory requirements have been established since the Records of Decision (RODs) were finalized.

The 27 sites that required CERCLA FiveYear Reviews were based on the following final RODs: • Site 111 - ROD, SVAD-111, 1934 Outdoor Washout Plant, March 2010 • Site 192 - ROD, SVAD-192, Manganese Ore Storage Mounds, January 2010 • Sites 35, 60PS, 60S2, 60S3, 76FA, 76GS, 76RH, 86, 88HD, 92, 93, 95, 102LB, 128, 131, 135, 183, 189, 190A, HA, and SEW - ROD for 33 Lower Post and Plant Area Sites, July 2012 • Sites 37PS, 76CS, 76OD, and 126 ROD for Sites 5, 24, 37PS, 69, 76CS, 76OD, 126, 155, 184, and 186, August 2013.

In Situ Chemical Treatment was the remedy selected for Site 111 and Offsite Disposal was the remedy selected for Site 192. The remedy selected for 21 of the sites (Sites 35, 60PS, 60S2, 60S3, 76FA, 76GS, 76RH, 86, 88HD, 92, 93, 95, 102LB, 111, 128, 131, 135, 183, 189, 190A, 192, HA, and SEW) and a component of the remedies selected for Sites 111 and 192 is implementation of land use controls (LUCs) to protect humans by preventing unacceptable exposure to contaminants in soil and/or groundwater.

Human health risks at these 23 sites are acceptable for the planned future land users (i.e., industrial and construction workers), but they were deemed unacceptable for unrestricted reuse. The LUCs will be implemented to maintain industrial land use at the 23 sites and prevent residential and agricultural uses of the site. The Five-Year Review concluded that the selected remedies for the 23 sites are currently protective of human health and the environment.

All interested persons or parties are invited to attend and participate in said public hearing.

Lauritzen Illinoisan of the Day at state fair

SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois State Fair Museum Foundation is recognizing 10 people, including Lanark’s Penny Lauritzen, as an Illinoisan of the Day at this Penny year’s State Lauritzen Fair.

Saturday is Penny Lauritzen Day. She will be publicly introduced and receive gifts and a personal proclamation from Gov. Bruce Rauner. The fair ends Sunday.

She and the other winners were announced in July. She was nominated by Diana Ropp, a co-member of the Illinois Agri-Women planning committee, for her involvement in Changing Face of Agriculture, a statewide program that focuses on agriculture career discoveries for high school and college-age women.

“I am honored. We’ve enjoyed the state fair for many years,” Lauritzen said.

“I showed calves in my teens at the fair, and now we enjoy watching our grandchildren.”

Saturday at the State Fair, her grandson, Jake Larkin of Pontiac, won the 4-H Grand Championship for his Citizenship project, she said. “It’s pretty awesome.”

A

nother Carroll County Fair is in the books. I for one did not spend much time at the fair. I was unfortunate enough to come down with walking pneumonia as soon as we got back from our trip. After a round of antibiotics, I am still not 100 percent and hanging at the fair was something that wasn’t in the cards for me.

The Children’s Farm ran smoothly with the help of the Carroll County 4-H, their volunteers, our Ag in the Classroom coordinator Melinda Charbonneau, and Paula Adams, who brought the animals. Thank you to all of those who helped. We greatly appreciate it.

We also hosted a successful Ag Olympics. We ended up with 14 teams. The Young Leaders would like to thank those area businesses that supported the Ag Olympics.

The winning teams receive cash prizes donated by Milledgeville State Bank, Carroll Service Co., 1st Farm Credit Services, and 1st Class Insurance of Milledgeville.

A big thank you also goes to the Milledgeville Men’s Club, which entered two teams in the adult division.

They donated their winnings back to the 4-H, which greatly appreciates their support.

The Women’s Committee has invited Katie Pratt from Lee County, who has served as a National Spokesperson

for Agriculture, to talk about food label reading and misconceptions in agriculture.

As farmers we understand Mother Nature’s rules for growing a crop. As consumers, do we understand the food industry’s rules for marketing our crop? Food labels do more to confuse than inform, unless you know what they mean. Let’s talk labels, from organic to free-range, from gluten-free to humanely raised.

If anyone has gone to Selmi’s in Rock Falls in the fall, that is what it reminded me of. It had the animals, different educational pieces, photo ops, a little cafe, and a ride around the farm. It was a nice little farm where the owners have quite a niche.

We spent the night downtown Belfast. The next morning we had a guide step on the bus as we did a quick city tour. They took us to the wall that separates the city, as there are the two groups that still cannot get along. Religion and political reasons play into this. It really made one feel like any moment they could come out shooting, but

SAVANNA — Debbie Long of Savanna is all too familiar with cancer.

That’s why her Relay For Life team, The Patriots, is sponsoring the second Smashing Cancer 5K Color Run/Walk.

The race, which will be held Oct. 17, begins and ends in Marquette Park, Mississippi River and down a scenic bike path. It will not be timed. Colored corn starch will be tossed on participants as they go through a color zone.

The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life brings teams of neighbors, friends, work associates, and families to celebrate those who have survived cancer, and remember those lost to the disease. took part in the relay was in 1999 in honor of my niece, Nicole, who was

only 6 months old when my sister found out that Nicole had cancer,” Long said. “Little did we know what cancer was going to do to our family in the coming years.”

Today, Nicole has two daughters and is cancer free.

“But not everyone in my family was that fortunate.

My father passed away from lung cancer, as well as my mother. On my brother’s 50th birthday, we were at his funeral because of lung cancer, and my husband passed away in 2013, just 20 days after he was told that he had cancer,” Long said.

The Patriots has 20 members, 18 from Long’s family. The youngest is 6.

All money raised goes to Carroll County Relay For Life, she said.

“For my family, the relay It’s not just fun and games to us.”

City considers new partner for K-9 Scout

Water system still under scrutiny

By LYNNETTE FORTH For Prairie Advocate MOUNT CARROLL – The fate of Scout, Mount Carroll’s aging 8-year-old police dog, was up for discussion at the Aug. 11 police committee meeting.

Chief Fred Cass has been working with Scout on the day shift, and said he thinks the dog has 3 to 4 good policing years left in him.

“I want to see him continue to work,” Cass said.

He wants to transition the German shephard to the night shift, where there are more opportunities for him to use his training, become his partner.

Scout since May. Scout, who has been on the force for 5 years, gets 16 to 20 hours of maintenance training a in Michigan, and a yearly half day narcotics training session, a budgeted item.

Powers said, “It’s a waste of money to start with, but we have to do it. It’s a no brainer to allow the county to do it for that price.”

Risko said if the city keeps the speed limit at 30, it would need to install railings at an additional cost. If the study finds cars going faster than 25, the city would have to raise the speed limit.

“The bridge project will be coming to light in a few months and we will have to come up with $180,000,” Risko said.

Recreation Alderman Joe Grim reported that the pool has had good attendance this summer, and the last day will be August 16. The village board had a special meeting Aug. 11 to address the issue.

“The EPA contacted us the week of Aug. 6 saying tests showed our well number four has higher levels of combined radium than allowed,” Village President Bonnie Heckman Foust said.

The board sent a letter to Shannon residents Aug. 7, notifying them of the high levels. “ ...Radium is a natural substance and is not an immediate health risk,” it said.

Michael Alvey, of the Water and Sewer Committee, also said the water is safe to drink.

SAFETY STEPS FOR MOTORISTS

• When a school bus is traveling on a two-lane roadway and is stopped to pick up or drop off pupils, the vehicles in all lanes of traffic must stop. Vehicles should stop at least 20 feet before reaching the school bus to allow pupils to cross the roadway safely.

• When a school bus is traveling on a four-lane roadway with at least two lanes of traffic traveling in the opposite direction, only those lanes of traffic traveling in the same direction as the school bus must stop.

Pupils shall not be required to cross four or more lanes of traffic to reach their residence.

• When a school bus is traveling on a one-way roadway and is stopped to pick up or drop off pupils, all lanes of traffic must stop, regardless of the number of lanes of traffic.

• CAUTION: The majority of children injured or killed in pupil trans- portation are not injured or killed on the school bus, but outside the bus. Most of them are struck by motorists who fail to stop for the flashing red lights and extended stop arm. This area around the bus is often referred to as the “DEATH ZONE.” • State law requires all school buses to stop at railroad crossings, whether or not there are pupils on board. The school bus driver will pull to the righthand lane and display the hazard warning lights, stop the bus within 15 and 50 feet of the first rail of the rail grade crossing, open the driver window and service door, look and listen for an approaching train, and then proceed across the tracks without changing gears.

Other vehicles should not try to cross the tracks behind the school bus until the bus has cleared the tracks and there is room for the vehicle behind the bus on the other side. Some rail crossings have limited space between rail crossings and stop signs or signals on the other side of the tracks. If the school bus must make a stop after crossing the tracks, a vehicle following the bus may be trapped on the tracks until the bus moves or the stop signal light changes.

This would have tragic results should a train approach the crossing and vehicles are unable to go forward or backward to clear the tracks.

SAFETY STEPS PARENTS CAN TAKE

• Supervise children to make sure they get to the stop on time, wait far away from the road and avoid rough play.

• Teach your child to ask the driver for help if he/she drops something near the bus. If a child stoops to pick something up, the driver cannot see him/her, and the child could be struck by the bus. A book bag or backpack helps keep loose items together.

• Make sure clothing has no loose drawstrings and backpack straps are short so that they don’t get caught in the handrail or school bus door.

• Encourage safe school bus loading and unloading (see next page).

• If you think a bus stop is in a dangerous place, talk with your school office or transportation director about changing the location.

TEACH YOUR CHILD TO GET ON AND OFF THE SCHOOL BUS SAFELY • When loading, stay away from the danger zone and wait for the driver’s signal. Board the bus in single file.

• When unloading, look before stepping off the bus to be sure no cars are passing on the shoulder (side of the road). Move away from the bus.

• Before crossing the street, take five “giant steps” out from the front of the bus (Illinois has the school bus crossing arm) until you see the driver’s face. The driver will signal you when it is safe to cross the roadway.

• Look left-right-left when coming to the edge of the bus to make sure traffic is stopped. Continue to watch for traffic when crossing.

Supervise children at the school bus stop. Make sure they move away from the bus, out of the Danger Zone.

“They always have a powerhouse and are always the team to watch out for. I am very eager and excited to start my second year as head coach and really focus on teaching and coaching the girls to have the win.”

“We are a very athletic and quick team that will be able to make up for a lack of height,” Cupp said. “Only having one returning starter, it might take a few matches for everyone to settle in.”

Other area teams to watch this year, Cupp said, are Forreston, Dakota and Freeport Aquin – “usually the ones to beat if you want a chance at the conference title. Outside of our conference, Eastland is a strong team.”

Griswold asked if mitigating the issue beforehand wouldn’t have brought in a better bid. Mayor Tony McCombie said that MSA “did give the worst-case scenario . . . they went with the highest bid that they received on the information that they did their research on.

“On the record, I think the city was given an unfair assessment by the person that gave us the bid. I think it was borderline fraudulent.

I have a lot of faith in MSA and I believe that they did their due diligence on it.”

She said the taxpayers received a “very unfair” bid.

Public Works Superintendent John Lindeman sadi the city didn’t have much choice as to the site of the new plant in the area they chose, without buying up a whole block of houses and tearing them down. He said when the rebidding occurs, some of the contractors that bid on Morrison’s wastewater treatment plant would be interested in Savanna’s work.

MSA’s Jason Miller said the city can ask for two bids, one on the original design one. He also noted that both the EDA and the IEPA have to approve the new concepts before proceeding, and that MSA has targeted submission of these concepts for October.

That is something that I will bring back to my chapter,” DeMichele said. “That I can count on every single one of them to participate and get their jobs done properly. I did need to work on that, and this camp really helped me in that department.”

“The camp was all about leadership building and learning ways of bringing our chapter together as a team,” said Hartman, a junior who will serve as varsity president this year. “I will try to lead by example. I try to do as many FFA events as possible and stay active in

Obituaries Joseph L. Rath

LANARK — Joseph L. Rath, 93, of Lanark, died Monday, Aug. 10, 2015, at Good Samaritan Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Mount Carroll.

Joseph was born Nov. 12, 1921, on the family farm in Washington Township.

He attended Mosquito Hill Country School and graduated Savanna High School with the Class of 1939.

On Feb. 11, 1945, Joseph married Viola Knoess. They celebrated 64 years of marriage.

Joseph farmed with Viola for 12 years near Chadwick, then near Lanark for 50 years. Joe was concerned for care of the land and was named Carroll County Conservation Farmer of the Year in 1994. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and would spoil them. For many years he personalized their pumpkins by etching their names on the pumpkins when they were small.

Joseph was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Mount Carroll; the Carroll County Farm Bureau, where he served as secretary for 20 years; the Lanark Lions Club, where he received the Melvin Jones Fellow designation for humanitarian service; and was a Lanark school board member.

Joseph will be dearly missed by two sons, Henry (Gail) Rath of Lake Zurich, and the Rev. James (Janet) Rath of Lake Mills, Wisconsin: eight grandchildren, Christopher Rath of Lake in the Hills, Jennifer (Kerry) Rea of Grayslake, Jeremiah Rath of Wheeling, Amy Rath of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, Dan Rath of Ottawa, Tim Rath of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Julie consin, and Katie Rath of Puyallup, Washington; two great-grandchildren, Eddie and Leah Rea of Grayslake; and siblings Paul Rath and Eunice Rath, both of Savanna.

Joseph was preceded in death by his wife, Viola; two brothers, Henry and Fred; a sister, Lois Koster; and both parents.

A funeral service was held Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mount Carroll. Burial will be in Lanark Cemetery. Visitation was held Sunday at Law-Jones Funeral Home in Mount Carroll. A memorial fund has been established. Visit lawjonesfuneralhome.com to send condolences.

Mark David Scribner

MILLEDGEVILLE — Mark David Scribner died Monday, Aug. 10, 2015, at home of a massive stoke.

He was born March 22, 1963, to Victor and Judy (Harmon) Scribner. He lived and worked in Milledgeville his whole life. He was a graduate of Milledgeville High School and attended Sauk Valley Community College. He was employed by Carroll Industrial Molds as a pattern maker and computer designer.

Mark had a passion for barbecue and developed a recipe for a sauce that he named ScRib-BQ. Mark and his brother, Tim, competed in cooking competitions in Iowa and Wisconsin as well as locally. Mark was active in fundraisers for Milledgeville Junior Tackle and for Boy Scouts. He will be sorely missed by family and friends.

He is survived by his mother, Judy Scribner; brothers Mike and Tim (Chris) Scribner; nephews Andrew and Cru Scribner; and niece Jacey Scribner, all of Milledgeville.

He was preceded in death by his father, Victor Scribner, in 2001, and his grandparents, Clyde and Charlotte Harmon and Frank and Bertha Scribner.

MORRISON — Phylis A. Venhuizen, 93, of Morrison, passed away Friday, Aug. 14, 2015, at Resthave Nursing Home in Morrison.

Phylis was born Oct. 26, 1921, in Chadwick, to Charles and Flossie (Hiller) Adolph. Phylis was educated in Jefferson School in rural Carroll County.

She married William “Whitey” Venhuizen on Jan. 22, 1944, in Morrison. He died Sept. 8, 1998.

Phylis was a homemaker. She was a member of Ebenezer Reformed Church, Morrison, where she participated in Ladies Aid and the church’s quilting group. She was an avid Cubs fan.

She is survived by her two sisters, Lois King of Chadwick and Florence Tripp of Morrison, and many nieces and nephews.

She also was preceded in death by her brother, Donald “Bub” Adolph.

MILLEDGEVILLE – Bernadine J. Woodin, 80 of Milledgeville died Friday, Aug. 14, 2015, at CGH Medical Center in Sterling.

She was born June 6, 1935, in Sterling, the daughter of Ross and Edna (Stern) Wolf. She married Archie W. Woodin on March 2, 1956, in Sterling.

Bernadine had worked for 29 years at Elkay in Lanark and Savanna before retiring.

She was a member of Hope United Methodist Church, Chadwick.

Survivors include her husband, Archie; two daughters, Leola J. (Dennis) Mowry of Rockton and Linda L. (Larry) Alexander of Chadwick; two sons, Walter O. Woodin of Bettendorf, Iowa, and Keith “Woody” Woodin of Lanark; 5 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Calvin; one daughter, Grace; her brother, Marvin Wolf and one granddaughter, Nichole.

Captain Grant C. (Jack) Young

LANARK — Captain Grant C. (Jack) Young, USN (Ret), of Lanark, passed away on Aug. 16, 2015. He was born in Dixon on Nov. 8, 1921, the son of Clark C. and Harriet L. (Moline) Young.

He married Ethel I. Shippert on Dec. 27, 1943 in a ceremony conducted in her parents (Charles and Grace Shippert) home near Nachusa.

Jack grew up on his parents farm in Lee County, near Nachusa. He graduated from a nearby, one-room grade school and Amboy Township High School prior to enlisting in July 1940 in the U.S. Navy. He served in enlisted billets until the onset of WWII. Then he was assigned

Naval Operations.

In consequence of his service and combat experiences, Captain Young was awarded the Navy’s highest honor, the Navy Cross, the Air Medal with six gold stars for additional awards, the Purple Heart, the Navy Distinguished Service Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal, and through his squadron’s combat actions, two Presidential Unit Citations, as well as numerous campaign and service area medals.

Jack was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ethel I. Young of Lanark; his brother, Frank Young of Grand Detour, and parents and grandparents.

Austin is swiftly growing out of his baby stage and keeps getting sweeter by the day. At 9 months old he crawls all over, exploring everything as he goes. His curly brown hair matches his daddy’s. Everyone says he also looks like Daniel, which tickles me. His big blue eyes can’t help but win one’s heart in an instant.

You never have to guess how he’s doing, he wears his feelings on his face. It’s like my mother says, “He is an intense person.” What he does is done with his whole heart.

When something excites him he stiffens his entire body, waves his arms and wrinkles

up his little nose.

I can’t help but wonder if his expressive ways and actions might come from Daniel’s side of the family, while they tend to disagree and think it’s from my family. Really, who cares where it comes from? We all love him to pieces, his dramatic character and all.

We’ve been having fun teaching him new sounds and words. His favorite right now is “uh-oh.” Right before dropstarts saying “uh-oh.”

say and he uses those quite frequently. Austin absolutely adores Daniel. The highlight of his day, and mine, is when Daniel comes home from work. As Julia starts chanting “Daddy’s home!” Austin gets all wound up with a pleading look on his little round face. He waves his chubby little arms, beckoning Daddy to pick him up.

there, each clinging to a pant leg waiting to be held.

I love watching their happy, content faces as he nestles both of them onto his lap.

Julia does great helping entertain Austin. He laps up the mother-like love she showers on him. Right now she’s at the stage where she thinks she’s big enough to carry him around, but unfortunately, her Mommy and Daddy don’t think she’s ready for that.

Julia also does well help-

ing me wash the dishes, hanging up little pieces of laundry and is learning forenoon she helped me by washing green beans and putting them in jars for me to can. Of course at 3 years old, she needs assistance and extra direction. I try to remind myself that even though I may need to later redo some things, having her help me is not in vain.

It’s all about learning to be a willing helper and work-

ing together.

The last several weeks she loves pretending to be a guest at our house. Following is a typical scene: “Knock, knock,” I hear a sweet little voice saying, as someone raps on the front door. Leaving work in the kitchen, I hurry over to the door and open it to see my little darling on the porch steps clutching her doll.

“Come on in! I’m happy to see you,” I greet her.

“I’m going to visit you and stay here for the night!” she eagerly informs me. “Do you have a bed and clothes and food for a girl my size?”

“Oh, yes, we have everything a little girl needs. Just come on in. We’re so happy to have you!”

“I will be here to help you.

I’ll take care of Austin. I brought a gift along for him,” she says, holding out a little gift bag stuffed full of his toys.

In spite of the daily challenges and demands of motherhood, there is nothing I’d rather do than care for the family God has given us.

Julia’s Sour Cream Raisin Bars

Serves: 2 dozen bars Ingredients 1 1/3 cup quick oats 1 1/3 cup flour 3/4 cup brown sugar 3/4 teaspoon baking soda 2/3 cup butter Filling: 4 egg yolks 1 cup white sugar 1 T cornstarch 2 cups sour cream 2 cups raisins Combine crumb ingredients.

Pat 2/3 of the crumbs into a 9-inch pan.

Combine filling ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a roiling boil.

Pour filling over crust and sprinkle with remaining crumbs.

Bake at 350 for 15-18 minutes.

“EPA said if we want to expedite the loan, the interest rate will be 2.12 percent,” Mayor Everett Pannier said, “but if we wait until Oct. 1, the rate drops to 1.81 percent.”

After the council on Aug. 11 awarded a $12.9 million project to Leander Construction, the city was eager to submit the loan application as soon as possible so work could begin in the fall.

Now that work might not happen until spring.

“The interest rates made the decision easy,” Pannier said. “We won’t ask for the loan until October – it’s worth it to wait a few weeks.” project, which is just for the plant, came in about $2 million less than the engineering estimates.

“Until the new tests come back, all we know is that you can drink it,” Alvey said. “It is not a health hazard, and if it was, the EPA would shut our system down immediately.”

The EPA standard is 5 picocuries per liter; Well 4 has slightly more than 6 picocuries.

Foust laid blame for the higher-than-acceptable contaminant levels on aging wells 1 and 2, and aging equipment.

“Pump four was doing all the work,” Foust said.

Reconditioning work began on Wells 1 and 2 in July and is near completion, with Well 1 requiring complete replacement of all pumping equipment.

Well 2 required considerably more work and faced three major issues that were presented to the

board at its June meeting

by Cahoy Group regional manager Ernie Lilja.

He said that pump was set too deep at 620 feet, that it was pumping only one-half to one-third of what it should, and that drilling tools and pipes with couplers were found buried in the sediment. The debris found in the well limited its depth, affecting Normally, the village blends waters from Wels 1 and 2 to dilute the respective levels of nitrate and barium, but when Well 2 began to malfunction and pump at about half of its operating pressure, those levels could not be maintained.

“We want 4 to help 1 and 2, and we are going to do monthly testing to make sure we are OK on the radium issue,” Foust said.

“We feel that when Well 4goes back to only running 50 percent of time that the radium count will come down.”

Previously, while running 50 percent of the time, the radium level of the water blended from Wells 1, 2 and 4 was only 3.6 to 3.9.

Foust said an issue with the testing is that it takes a month or more to complete.

“We won’t even know for 4 to 6 weeks if we

are continuing to have a problem, so it’s a time game right now,” she said. “We are hoping that because we’ve backed off so much on pump four we won’t have that problem.”

While it is known that some people who drink water containing radium226 and radium-228 in excess of the maximum contaminant level over many years may have an increased risk of getting maintain the water is safe to drink and are working with the IEPA and village’ engineering contractor Fehr Graham to ensure reliable and safe drinking water for the residents of Shannon.
