What would you do if stranded in Chicago with just $65 in your pocket? Although in 1903 that amount was more than what they used to call “chicken feed”, but it was a humble pittance because it was James’ share of a four-man partnership back in Buffalo from which he’d been voted out.

The other three said he wasn’t a good enough businessman. Wait! Not a good businessman? He’d organized the business, a cheese distributorship, and he’d come up with the idea featuring “Shefford’s Snappy Cheese!”

J.L. had done business since he was a young boy tagging after a brother walking a mile and a half to a country school near their family farm at Fort Erie, Ontario, Canada. He’d been born in December 1874, one of 11 children of hard-working Mennonite pioneers.

The children were taught to work for everything needed or desired. Although terribly nearsighted, his innate curiosity led him to school, his nose literally at the blackboard; in the books. He’d “contracted” with a teacher to sweep

part-time because he had to help on the farm. He subsequently made a deal with his father: If he paid off the father’s mortgage on the farm he’d be free to go out on his own to do whatever living he himself wanted.

James bought eggs from nearby farmers to peddle them across the river to hotels and restaurants in Buffalo. Thus the young “businessman” paid the mortgage. J.L. went 6 miles each way to attend business school in Buffalo, also sweeping, dusting, and cleaning to pay the tuition.

Milledgeville village trustees discuss questions about sidewalk project bids CHRISTINE A. OTTENS Village Clerk Based on Unapproved Minutes MILLEDGEVILLE – The city’s Public Works and Buildings Committee met in special session at 6:45 p.m. Aug. 4 at Village Hall to discuss the sidewalks project and how trustees feel about the bid and other items.

Trustees Bill Stage, Gene Behrens, Stan Eads, John Helms, and Wayne Sprecher, and President Galen Wirth were present. So, too, was Mike Leslie of Willett, Hofmann & Associates.

Wirth said Clerk Christine A. Ottens had received a Freedom of Information Act request from a gentleman who questioned the paint amount on the bids. The person making the inquiry said he didn’t see how the company could charge only the amount it is – considerably less than the other two bidders – if it is truly paying the prevailing wage to workers.

Leslie said the company, Nicam Construction of Freeport, will have will have to pay the wages it is supposed to.

The gentleman who questioned the amount said the company should be paying an hourly wage of $40 to $58, and it only priced it out at about $163. He said the company is not a responsible bidder and it should have its bid thrown out.

Leslie said the company might Wirth said he talked to the lawyers, who counseled the village to accept the lowest bid in order to avoid a potential lawsuit.

Eads asked if the village has a list of the subcontractors the company will use. Wirth said yes – Civil Engineering, Engel Electric and some others are listed. There were none that raised any questions. Eads asked if the company can bring in other subcontractors not on that list, and Leslie said the village would be able to stop anyone that it doesn’t approve of from doing the work.

Stage said the lawyers and the grant people are telling village trustees to accept the low bid, and he feels they should follow their advice. Stage said the village is stuck, because trustees would like to have Brown Construction of Milledgeville do the job, as it is local and does so much for the village, but legal counsel says the low

bidder needs to be accepted.

Eads asked about the grant money. Wirth said the village can get the additional $9,000 it gave back to help reduce the cost, which remains more than the original estimate of $46,000. Leslie said many things were left off the engineers’ original specs, including the shoring up of awning supports, the drainage issue, some curb and gutters, electrical upgrades, patches going across the road for conduit, and more. Leslie was originally concentrating on the handicapped ramps and other items, then when the village changed the scope of work, he just forgot these items.

Wirth wondered if the village could hold off on evening out parking spaces and resurface the two blocks of Main Avenue in a few years so they could be consistent.

Leslie said the work needs to be done now because of drainage issues. He said the village also would have to throw out the bids and begin again.

Wirth said Leslie needs to go over the engineering for the other three blocks and make sure everything is on it for the grant, adding that the village could have written the grant for more money and the wouldn’t now be out so much. Wirth said village leaders don’t want any more surprises.

Leslie also said Willett, Hofmann & Associates are working with Nicam on a project in Orangeville with no change orders, and the project is about done. With no further business, the motion was made by Stage, and seconded by Behrens, to adjourn at 7:12 p.m.

Regular meeting

The regular meeting of the Board of Trustees was called to order at 7:30 p.m. Joinoing this meeting was Maintenance Supervisor Greg Miller, Chief of Police Jim Haag, and Jeff Lancaster.

Sidewalk bid approved

The sidewalk bid was next on the agenda. Stage said trustees had discussed this in the public works meeting, and he feels there is nothing they could do at this time but accept the bid and move forward with the project. A motion was made

New business

Wirth said some people were contacted about the Police Department renovation. The village, he said, had received only one estimate from the three businesses that were notified. Wirth asked Ottens to contact the other businesses to see if they can submit bids before the next meeting.

The next item was creating a new account for the grant the village received for the sidewalk project.

The account will be started and used for only the grant while the village works on the project. The motion carried by omnibus vote, 5-0.

Wirth said the village has had some residents ask about the old four-way light at the intersection of Main Avenue and Fourth Street that had been removed. He asked the trustees if there was any reason to keep that light on hand. A motion was made by Stage, seconded

by Behrens, to declare the light surplus property, which passed unanimously. Ottens is to advertise the item as surplus and take sealed bids for it. They will be opened at a future meeting.

Chief Haag was approached by bar owners, asking to be allowed to keep bars open an extra hour for Carroll County Fair week.

Haag said the village has done that annually and there doesn’t seem to have been a problem. Stage asked if there is a reason the village does it each year instead of just letting the bars stay open an hour longer all of the time during fair week.

Haag said it just gives the village a little more say in the matter. If there is a problem one year, it can

deny it the next. Themeasure was approved unanimously.

Lancaster asked for permission for The Other Bar to close parts of Main Avenue and Fifth Street for the Burger Cook-Off it is having again this year. The Sept. 27 cook-off is a fundraiser for the Boy Scouts. Haag said there were no problems last year. The alley behind the bar will remain open. The motion carried, 5-0 by omnibus vote.

Stage said he was approached by a local tree cutting service that wanted to know if it could do some of the village’s removal of trees. Stage said the service would bring its insurance information to Village Hall. Stage said the village has Ryan’s Tree Service doing a couple of tree removals, but he would not be opposed to having this company bid also. The company is working to acquire a crane to help with bigger jobs. The trustees said they agree, and the village will contact that business for a bid the next time.

Callahan, longtime aide to Democrats, dies at age 80 Prairie Advocate Staff SPRINGFIELD — Gene Callahan, a former newspaper reporter and longtime aide to top Democratic elected ing the late U.S. Sen. Alan Dixon, died Monday in his Springfield home.

Gene Callahan Callahan was the father of U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos, D-East Moline. Bustos represents the 17th Congressional District, which includes Carroll County.

Governor Pat Quinn on Monday released the following statement regarding Callahan’s death: “Gene Callahan was one of world – a true gentleman who could work with anybody, any time, to get things done.

“It is hard to believe the 40-plus-year ‘Callahan era’ has come to a close. Few of us can remember a time when Gene was not involved in public service.

“Thankfully, he has instilled those same values in his daughter, Cheri Bustos, who has taken his ethic of hard work and honesty to the U.S. Congress.

“Illinois has suffered two huge losses recently – first former Sen. Alan Dixon, and now the senator’s long-time friend and advisor, Gene Callahan. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and the thousands of people whose lives Gene touched during his long and storied life.”

Welcome back, Walgreens; now, what more can we do?

If you haven’t heard, Walgreens made the choice to stay in the U.S. and, likely, to keep its headquarters in Illinois.

I’m proud of Walgreens. The decision couldn’t have been easy. After it announced its choice, the company’s share price dropped dramatically and has yet to climb back up. Walgreens chose to stick with a country and a state that gave it the freedom to succeed. It chose to stick with a state in the throes horizons once were as big as the and towns of the 89th District.

Walgreens’ leaders chose to stick with us. How are we going to show that we are choosing to stick with them? And how are we going to stick with the dozen or so other corporations that USA Today says are considering leaving the country? And how are we going to stick with the myriad Illinois businesses that are considering leaving Illinois for a state with a lower corporate tax burden? And how are we going to stick with the scores of small Illinois businesses that are being forced to shut their doors?

And, then, how are we going to stick with your average Illinoisans, 50 percent of whom according to a recent poll would leave the state if they could? One thing we have done in recent days is lower workers’ compensation rates for 2015. That’s good; really good.

Companies will save up to $143

compensation rates in the nation.

New businesses look to other states as more cost-effective places to start, and established businesses move out for lower rates.

We also can lower our corporate tax rate. Illinois, again, has one of the highest corporate tax rates in the country. When given the choice, new and established businesses choose states with lower tax rates. And that turns into fewer jobs for Illinoisans.

As for the average Illinoisan? I have a sneaking suspicion that reaching deeper and deeper into their wallets probably won’t keep them here. We tried that, and for 3 years straight Illinois has had one of the highest rates of outbound migration. What will keep them here? Lower taxes and more jobs.

Certain politicians claim to have created vast amounts of jobs in the past few months. And the seemingly positive drop in unemployment down to 7.1 percent in June from 7.3 percent in May gives them reason to pat themselves on the back.

The numbers they aren’t telling you, though? More than 20,000 of the Illinois workforce quit looking for jobs – that’s more than September 2008, one of the worst months of the Great Recession.

Once we lower the cost of living and doing business in Illinois, I think Illinoisans can do the rest. They’ve done a pretty darn good job in the past (see last week’s column). Rob Portman, a U.S. senator from Ohio, said it best when commenting on the national economic situation: “The way to an American economic comeback, the way to paycheck, is to unleash the forces of job creation in America. The source of new jobs isn’t going to be the bureaucracies of Washington [or Illinois], but rather the creativity, ingenuity, and hard work of the American people.”

Illinois is no different. Once the government steps back, Illinoisans will step up.

Letters and Commentary No merit to political attack Bob Flider, our state director of agriculture, deserves better.

In the past several weeks, there have been several politically motivated attacks published against Bob. The record needs to be set straight. First and most important, I am not in Bob’s political party. We both were elected to the Illinois House of Representatives 2003.

Throughout Bob’s tenure, we served together on the Conserva-

tion and Agriculture Committee, as well as many others. I served as minority spokesman on Conservation and Agriculture and regularly discussed issues affecting the ag community with Bob. Bob is a thoughtful, dedicated, very hard working public servant. His observations were always clear, concise and thought through. I respected him then, I respect him now. The attacks that he was appointed by Governor Quinn and is serving with no direct experience are totally without merit.

To insinuate that being a farmer would make one a better ag director ignores the importance of his strong rural roots, his prior leadership roles, including mayor of Mount Zion, and his dedicated

work as a state representative. Bob serves as the director of agriculture with dedication and exceptional competence. He listens to the issues, observes the lay of the land (pun intended), and acts decisively.

Though I retired from the House in October 2013, my involvement in agriculture and observation of the political process remain.

Let’s put politics behind us and recognize a good leader of agriculture for his competence, Jim Sacia Pecatonica, Illinois (Jim Sacia served 11 years as a state representative, three times prior to that he received conservation farming awards from Winnebago County SWCD)

News doesn’t change much, so what’s new?

By GLENN MOLLETTE Every day, we turn on the television and hear about all the wars in the Middle East. Life is bad in the Middle East. Take your pick of Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and, currently, Israel and the Gaza strip. We aren’t hearing good news from any of those places. So what’s new?

The cold murder of Major General Harold Greene and other soldiers last week in Afghanistan is a reminder that we can’t even trust the people we are trying to help. These people have been killing each other for thousands of years. Why, after all these years, can these people not learn to live at peace and help each other?

They hate each other as much or more than ever before. They are as barbaric as ever, with bigger weapons. News hasn’t changed much. So what’s new?

Ebola is big news because the disease is so deadly. In Atlanta, Nancy Writebol and Dr. Kent Brantly are now fighting for their own lives. These two good people have been helping the

sick in Liberia and contracted the disease. Every day, people in Africa are plagued with HIV, sickness and death from drinking dirty water, plus much more.

Americans battle rampant cancer, diabetes, heart disease, neurological diseases, blindness and more.

The news doesn’t seem to change.

Here we are in 2014, with all of modern medicine, and every day multitude of health problems in America. The news is the same.

So what’s new?

The weather is news. The Hawaiian Islands faced two hurricanes of major size. The largest storms in a long time were bearing down on the tiny islands. Soon, the Gulf Coast and Florida can expect sizable storms and hurricanes, as the season is now here. A major argument against fossil fuel use is climate change. I don’t think we can blame every storm and hot day on using coal and oil.

However, the world is changing and within the next 20 years we will see a large reduction in fossil fuel use, as we turn more to natural gas, wind and solar

energy. I predict we will continue to see hurricanes, tornadoes and hot weather. However, treating our planet kindly with cleaner energy should be something that a modern civilization would want to do. Unfortunately, many don’t care, as too many can only think about today, me, my and I. So, what’s new?

We all saw something wonderful last week at Stirling, Australia, near Perth. Hundreds of people used their combined strength to push a subway car off a man’s leg. A handful of people could never have accomplished the task. A huge number of people spontaneously joined efforts and saved a man’s life. They accomplished a miracle. This was great news.

I’m glad our elected American Congress and senators weren’t there. They could never have combined their efforts to save that man. So what’s new?

Paralyzed Iraq War veteran becomes mobile again Sullivan’s Foods, customers donate Action Track Chair TOM KOCAL TKocal@prairieadvocate.com SAVANNA – Giving back to the communities that support them, Sullivan’s Foods was pleased to be able to hand off an Action Track Chair to Grant Armbruster of Machesney Park that was purchased with donations from Sullivan’s Foods and their customers.

The idea was put into action after John Sullivan, CEO and a veteran, had seen one of the Action Track Chairs. He believed that a chair like this could change a veteran’s life. John was very excited about the prospect, and his enthusiasm was contagious. All 12 of Sullivan’s Foods stores participated, as well as the Savanna Station Convenience Store.

Sullivan’s Foods and its customers started the project during Christmas week 2013, with the goal to raise enough funds to purchase an Action Track Chair for a disabled veteran.

“To raise the money, cashiers sold $1 paper squares that the customers would then sign their names to as a donation towards the Track Chair,” said Kathy Christensen, vice president of Sullivan’s Foods. “The

signed squares were then used as a decoration for the front end of the stores, promoting the program. This promotion lasted 3 weeks.

“But at the end of 3 weeks, still being short of the required funds, we made a decision to do another fundraiser. At the beginning of April, when it was still very cold, we held a companywide outdoor cook-out to raise additional funds. Finally, enough money was raised!”

Christensen said that during the fundraising efforts, Sullivan’s Foods promoted and encouraged customers to submit names of veterans who they believed might be able to use an Action Track Chair. Since 1973, Sonny has been an integral part of security at the fairgrounds during the annual weeklong event as a member of the Carroll County Sheriff’s Auxiliary. “Back then, I was part of the Carroll County Sheriff’s Radio Patrol,� Sonny said. “There was also the Sheriff’s Mounted Patrol.

Then Sheriff Rod Herrick dissolved the two different groups and created the Auxiliary.�

Taking a break at the entrance of the fairgrounds, Sonny sat with his wife of 65 years, Marilyn, as

they reminisced about days gone by. with the fair, there were 35 of us who worked shifts because there were so many people coming to families, and even catching pursesnatchers,� Sonny said. “But over the years, there are less people that come to the fair – still a lot, but not as many as 40 years ago. People have changed for the better, too. We don’t get any rough

Work on Shannon Veterans Memorial site underway The Shannon American Legion Post 379 has broken ground on the Shannon Veterans Memorial at the northwest corner of Shannon Route and state Route 72.

Legal work was completed this spring to acquire the land, donated by the Hammer family. The initial fundraising brought in enough money to get the base work and concrete

MOUNT CARROLL – Carroll County has moved a step closer to having a bridge replacement project get underway.

During its meeting Aug. 7 in the county courthouse, the Carroll County Board heard the Highway Department report the approval of low bidder Cumyn Construction for the Wysox and Elkhorn Grove Bridge replacement project, pending the outcome of the state Department of Transportation bid complaint process.

The board approved the department’s recommendation to authorize the board chairman to execute the contract and contract bonds with they become available.

Plan: Cultivate cannabis, jobs in Carroll County TONY CARTON For the Prairie Advocate MOUNT CARROLL â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Well paying jobs could grow out of medical marijuana in Carroll County.

That was a message delivered

by Jonathan Loiterman, co-founder of Green Star Growing LLC, to the Carroll County Board during its regular meeting Aug. 7.

Green Star plans to apply to the state for a medical cannabis cultivation center in the county.

Loiterman is researching sites in northwest Illinois, including Carroll County, and has filed a request Jonathan for a section Loiterman of the Jo-Carroll Depot LRA to be zoned as industrial to allow a cultivation center on the property. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re looking at putting something between a 30,000- and 50,000-square-foot facility in and bringing 20 to 30 jobs to that facility,â&#x20AC;? Loiterman said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;These jobs are not going to be minimum wage jobs for people clipping to hire veterans from within this community, and the bulk of the 20 to 30 jobs that we are looking at are $50K- to $100K-a-year jobs.

Once the program takes off, the jobs will only grow and advance beyond that.â&#x20AC;?

He said the proposed facility would be state of the art and in full compliance with Illinois law, which requires seed-to-sale tracking. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You have to have a lot of technology to make that system work,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We also plan to have our controls that are monitored and run by computers, so this facility is going to be packed with computers and information technology. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going to need people to install that, support it, maintain it and expand it over the future.â&#x20AC;?

Loiterman said his company is working closely with Tri-County Economic Development Alliance to hire local and purchase locally manufactured or distributed equipment as often as possible. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are some folks that tend to think medical cannabis is a gambit for recreational cannabis,â&#x20AC;?

Loiterman said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not where weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re at philosophically. There are lots of folks in our group that are physicians and are involved in academic medicine. We are serious about the research side, which means weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going to be bringing biotechnology people, chemists, agronomists and those type folks to be doing the research side, which is required by law.â&#x20AC;?

Cultivation centers are required advance knowledge of how cannabis can be used to help sick patients in Illinois.

Community outreach is a priority with Green Star Growing, as is education, Loiterman said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Education involves helping people prevent drug addiction,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There is also an outreach to help doctors understand how to

use cannabis. None of the medical schools told doctors how to use this.

It is important that we as an industry step up and make sure that happens.

We also want to reach out to help the the diseases that cannabis is used for; spinal injuries and cancer.â&#x20AC;?

He said a community involvement program would include working with area substance abuse programs on both the educational and monetary levels.

County Board member Ron Preston had voiced his concerns about security during Loitermanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s earlier presentation to the board.

Loiterman assured the board that the new legislation is very detailed about security requirements, and he said Green Star Growing will be in full compliance.

The Illinois State Police, the Department of Health, and the Department of Agriculture have the right to enter a cultivation center without a warrant for any reason whatsoever and at any time. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are required to have live video feeds of the inside and outside of every part of the facility 24 hours of the day piped directly to the State Police,â&#x20AC;? Loiterman said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They can show up at the door and take a look around. They are allowed to do that without a

In addressing an earlier query from County Clerk and Recorder Brian Woessner regarding sales taxes on cannabis, Loiterman said that while there is a 7 percent tax applicable to the cultivation center, any additional special taxes levied would be up to the community. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We feel very strongly about having a partnership with the community,â&#x20AC;? Loiterman said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We view operating a facility like this as a privilege, not a right, and even though the state is saying they are going to control the whole thing for us, it is important to engage and get feedback, both positive and negative, so that the net effect of what we are doing here is good for everyone.â&#x20AC;?

The Zoning Board of Appeals will meet at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 2 in the Carroll County Courthouse first floor board room. Further discussions concerning ordinance needed to accommodate the Green Star Growing request are expected to be on that meetingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s agenda.

Lanark rejects tax break for new retail store LYNNETTE FORTH For The Prairie Advocate News LANARK â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Should a box store be allowed to pay only 25 percent of its property taxes for the next 15 years to locate in the city?

The question drew a largerthan-normal crowd to the Aug. 5 meeting of the Lanark City Council.

The council was considering a recommendation by the Tax Increment Finance (TIF) Committee that the city â&#x20AC;&#x153;forgiveâ&#x20AC;? 75 percent of the property taxes due through 2029, the life of the TIF, for a retail facility development on state Route 64. It is estimated approval would result in the city not collecting more than $165,000 in taxes.

The new store would create no local construction jobs, and no local materials would be purchased for the proposed facility. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The committee had trouble with this one,â&#x20AC;? committee representative John Nelson said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;because we like our local grocery store, and want to help them. This is a big corporation that probably doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even know where Lanark is. We are just a store number to them. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Approximately 20 percent of their sales will be grocery items.

The committee recommended to do this, but with very, very serious reservations.â&#x20AC;?

Sharon Pepin, with Community Funding and Planning Services, said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;The company has actually been here a few times, and they do know your local grocery store. I understand your concern.â&#x20AC;?

Aldermen received a handout of information containing the impact that this type of store has generated in other towns, including Savanna, Milledgeville, Warren, and Oregon.

Citizen concerns

Resident Lynn Collins said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;My concern is in our grocery store.

Trashar (Patel) has not used any city money, but has made improvements, adding coolers and inventory. If you are going to do this, do it for every business in the TIF district. I hate the whole TIF concept. You are redistributing money.â&#x20AC;?

Pepin responded, â&#x20AC;&#x153;The business would be paying into property tax. The grocery store can come and ask for assistance. TIF funds are â&#x20AC;&#x153;We need to preserve the businesses we have,â&#x20AC;? Collins said.

Mayor John Huggins noted that the proposed corporation contributes funds to a Youth Literacy Program, while the Lanark Food Center continuously donates to the community. â&#x20AC;&#x153;With our great school system, I doubt if we would need

to apply for the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Youth Literacyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; grant.â&#x20AC;?

City Treasurer Carol Kruzek added, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Speaking as a citizen, Trashar mentioned he didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t use city money in case someone else may need it more. Giving that money to another big corporation is not how Lanark works. I would like us to think of Trashar, too.â&#x20AC;?

Alderman Ken Weaver said that when he started working for his company, â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was told that Walmart is a ruination of small-town America by a customer. This is a great example of that. I agree that TIF funds are great for small businesses, but we shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t cannibalize it.â&#x20AC;?

Alderman Lara Tallman responded, â&#x20AC;&#x153;I can appreciate the members of the TIF committee trying to make this recommendation. I think for many of us, we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t take lightly that we can have a place to grab a bag of chips, and have our children feel safe. People love the people here and the safety of our schools. When people move away from here, they come back downtown.

To Trashar Patel she said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;But at the same time we are here to help you.

Your asking for help can seed others.

My motion is to decline the recommendation at this time. Our grocery

store is where we come together.â&#x20AC;?

Mayor Huggins replied, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thank you for your work with TIF. This company went into Savanna with no money from the city. If they want to do that here, we can use their TIF funds for someone else.â&#x20AC;?

The council unanimously rejected the recommendation.

LANARK – R. Richard Zimmermann, 67, died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2014, near Mount Morris due to injuries sustained from a motorcycle accident.

He was born March 16, 1947, in Chicago, the son of Ralph and Francis Zimmermann. He graduated from high school in Chicago.

Richard served in the U.S. Marines Corps during Vietnam. He retired from the Marines, and was currently

The Better Business Bureau issues alert on loan scams Despite an improving economy, themselves cash strapped. Armed with that knowledge, scammers continue to rip off consumers who can least afford it. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) has received reports from a steady number of individuals who were the targets of. or have fallen victim to, loan scams. Today, scammers are using the Internet, phone and mail to reach their victims.

Chicago resident Stephen Hildebrand applied for an online loan. From the one application, he received three responses that promised guaranteed loans of $5,000. To receive the cash from a company calling itself Eloan.com, he paid an upfront fee of $550. He then paid $423.80 for a loan from GE Capital Bank. Mr. Hildebrand says, “I got a third call stating I could get a loan from $2,000 to $7,000, but I did not continue a full conversation

with them.” He also stated, “All the calls came on the same day and ... they used the same verbiage word for word.”

“Advance fee loan scams are times are tough and people are struggling to get by,” said Dennis Horton, the Better Business Bureau. “In most cases, desperation is a factor lifeline. It only worsens the situation when they fall victim to one of these scams.”

Using all means available, scammers sometimes will pretend to represent an existing business.

That was the case in one scheme in which the scammer sent loan applications in the name of a payday lender located on Cicero Avenue in Chicago. There was no need to could be completed online. All that was needed to be approved for the

“instant” personal loan was the advance payment of $230, which would prove that the applicant could afford to make the payments on the $5,000 loan.

The application required that the individual applying for the loan purchase a GreenDot Moneypak card and have the advanced payment loaded onto the card, and provide the PIN number to the scammer.

Once the payment was loaded, the individual was told to provide the card and pin number to the scammer.

A lender who uses a copy-cat or wanna-be name – Scammers give their companies names that sound like well-known businesses and create websites that look professional; some may even produce forged paperwork.

Friday evening was a highlight for me. Everyone in church was invited to participate in an informal singing at the school house.

Throughout the evening several men shared some inspirational thoughts.

Something that stood out for me was what a brother said about having hectic lifestyles and schedules. He challenged us to examine our lives to see whether we have a Jesus schedule or if we weren’t too busy to take time for what really counts in life. Afterwards we had some scrumptious snacks. Each of us excellent variety to choose from.

To those of you who may have not read my last letter, my husband Daniel grew up in Danville, Ohio and most of my growing up years were spent here in Flat Rock, Illinois. People keep asking us how we met. on what dating is like in our community and how it is done.

Before starting any boy-girl relationships youth are expected to be at least 18 years old and a member of the church. The boy is always the step. After praying and seeking God’s will he talks with the girl’s father and asks for his blessing before proceeding in making contact with her. when I was 10-years-old. Immediately there was a bond of kindred spirits.

Being of similar church fellowship their family occasionally came for a visit and would also spend time with other friends in our community.

Javin, my older brother, enjoyed when Daniel came to our house to spend time with him or were there perhaps some hidden reasons to visit?

I was very surprised a month after my 19th birthday when Mom and Dad asked to talk with me in private and announced that Daniel Yoder wanted to start a friendship with me. After spending time in prayer and seeking the Lord’s will we responded back to him with a positive answer.

I was honored. I had always respected him as a Godly young man.

After having a mutual agreement to begin a friendship a day is picked for the ally it is kept as a secret until then. The boy will then take the girl from church to her house on a Sunday afternoon where they spend time together.

Daniel came to Flat Rock for our who also had a girlfriend in our community. After the Sunday services I nervously, yet eagerly, waited until it was time to go home. When the time to our buggy and helped each other hitch up the horse. It seemed like there

were people everywhere watching us, most of them very surprised to see the two of us together.

We spent the afternoon at our cabin chatting, reading the Bible and praying together. After our date we joined the other youth for supper and a hymn singing.

Living 370 miles apart required lots of phone dates, but of course, we were always looking for a practical opportunity to spend time together.

Traveling to Danville rapidly became a highlight for me.

One evening when our family sat around the table eating supper there was a knock at the back door which was off of our kitchen.

“Come in!” I said, expecting to see a neighbor lady. The door opened and in walked Daniel Yoder in person. I almost shrieked.

I was overtaken with surprise, my mouth dropped open. I was speechless. What could I say? Were my eyes playing tricks on me or was this real?

Needless to say we had a wonderful weekend together before it was time for him to travel home once more. found Daniel and I making preparations for our wedding day. On March 19, 2010 we began our journey together as husband and wife.

My parents hosted a wedding with 400 guests. Everyone in my family did a wonderful job with cleaning, organizing, and planning.

There was tons of work involved with countless little details. My did in keeping things organized and running smoothly. She planned a full course Amish meal of dinner rolls, tossed salad, Salisbury steak, mashed potatoes, gravy, mixed vegetables, grape jello salad, peanut butter pie, pecan pie and ice cream.

I feel unworthy of everything

that was done for us in preparing for our unforgettable , as well as all the visitors who traveled hundreds of miles to show their love and support. This week I’ll share a recipe that was used at our wedding.

Amish Wedding Salisbury Steak 6 pounds turkey burger 1 ½ pounds sausage 2 cups quick oats 2 cups cracker crumbs 5 cups cold water 2 tablespoons dehydrated onions 1 tablespoon black pepper 3 tablespoons salt 1 tablespoon Lawry’s seasoning salt Mix and press into a cookie sheet with sides. Chill overnight.

Cut into squares. Grill and top with your favorite barbecue sauce.

Lane closures for work on Savanna bridge The Illinois Deaprtment of Transportation announces that a daily lane closure will be installed on U.S. Route 52 in Carroll County.

The lane closure will be on the Savanna-Sabula Bridge over the Mississippi River.

This closure will be in the westbound lane on Monday, Aug. 11, and Tuesday, Aug. 12. The closure will continue in the eastbound lane on Wednesday, Aug. 13, and Thursday, Aug. 14.

The closure will be in place each day from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m. IDOT workers will be performing a bridge inspection. Motorists are reminded to slow down and drive carefully through all work zones.

Cyclists to ride ‘Nature’s Rollercoaster’ Cyclists will travel through a Illinois during the 19th Annual Illinois Agriculture in the Classroom (IAITC) Bike Ride. This cross-country style ride Sept, 1-3 is an annual fundraiser hosted by the IAA Foundation to support the Illinois Agriculture in the Classroom program.

This year’s IAITC Bike Ride highlights routes through Stephenson, Carroll, Jo Daviess, Ogle and Winnebago counties, with lodging and evening activities in the Freeport area.

“We are extremely excited that the bike ride is coming to our area this year,” said Bruce Johnson, manage of the Stephenson County Farm Bureau. “The 2014 ride consists of routes through beautiful country hillsides and the Jane Addams Trail.”

Riders can participate for 1 or 2 days and can choose from routes that run approximately 40 or 80 miles.

Vehicle road support and safely scouted, marked routes are planned. average riding speed is 12 to 15 mph.

“Rider safety is of utmost importance,” said Charlie Grotevant, bike ride co-chairman. “We spend a great deal of time planning the best possible routes for great riding and great views of the countryside. That’s one of the reasons we’ve had such a great following for 19 years now.”

Along each bike route, cyclists stop at schools where fun, interactive student assemblies are held. Cyclists and IAITC staff and volunteers tell students the important story of agriculture. Equally important, students are reminded about bicycle safety from this group of “professionals.”

Evenings are spent experiencing local sites, family farms and hearty meals.

The IAA Foundation is now taking registrations to participate in this year’s event.
