MILLEDGEVILLE — A telepharmacy is expected to be up and running by the end of October in the Gibbs Building, at the junction of state Route 40 and the Milledgeville/Polo Road, just north of Nana’s Pizza. Community investors are putting up $50,000, and TelePharm LLC, a digital health care company based in Iowa City, Iowa, has committed $200,000, said Dan Nederhoff, president and CEO of Milledgeville State Bank. Aug. 4. In a telepharmacy, a pharmacist off site inspects and are dispensed by on site technicians. A similar, but privately owned, telepharmacy is open in Lanark. “The concept spreads the cost of a pharmacist over four or so smaller locations,” Nederhoff said. The Milledgeville site will start with one and a half technicians. It also will sell

TelePharm had been scouting the town for a site since April, said Nederhoff, who contacted Village President Galen Wirth about the idea. TelePharm asks for a commitment from the communities where they locate. In Milledgeville’s case, TelePharm will invest the building. “We know that if Milled-
geville buys into it, then we and the investors will have a good return,” TelePharm consultant Alex Grabber said. “We also want to support the community in different ways, whether it be supporting the school, or youth league teams, we want to create a cycle that contributes to one another.” “That’s the model: Have a group of community investors to show TelePharm that the village is sincere about supporting the new busi-
ness,” Wirth said. “Milledgeville went above and beyond, had great organization, and showed us there was a high level of commitment from the community,” Grabber said. Several locations were considered, but the most viable site, based on handicap accessibility, visible location, and the ability to lease a small area and not a whole building, was the Gibbs Building. It’s now home to McKenna’s Floor-
ing and the Midwest BioAg until the plant is built in the former industrial park. “This location is on what is probably the most heavily travelled road in town,” Wirth said. “We’re not giving up on our downtown, but visibility is what these developers want. Plus, the telepharmacy will be only a block away from the CGH Clinic.” There are six Milledgeville investors at this point, but it is too early in
the process to reveal their names, Wirth said. “They don’t want the focus to be on them. They truly believe this is something the village needs. We have a large percentage of senior citizens in Milledgeville and the surrounding area, and this type of business will save them travel time to Sterling, Lanark or Mount Carroll for their prescriptions,” he said. “These people believe in the community,” Nederhoff said. “This service is another way to help our quality of life by meeting a need.”

MOUNT CARROLL — Alan Flikkema, chairman of the Carroll County USDA Farm Service Agency committee, is reminding producers that the enrollment deadline for the 2014 and 2015

tions for ARC/PLC,” Flikkema said. “However, the software for printing ARC/PLC contracts did not become available until June 17, so any producer that contacted to that date more than likely has not completed
their ARC/PLC contracts for 2014 and 2015.” Flikkema said all owners and operators with a share interest in base acres on the farm must enroll by signing annual ARC/PLC contracts. All contract signatures are due to the FSA

MILLEDGEVILLE – Liz Hutchison, president of the Carroll County Fair Board, couldn’t be more pleased with the results of the fair that ran Aug. 4 to 8. “This was the best year we’ve ever had,” Hutchison said. “As far as gate receipts and attendance, we never thought we could surpass last year, but this was a record year. The weather cooperated. We were very lucky.” Hutchison said the fair’s gate income hit an unexpected level of $30,000

The food vendors were particularly pleased, Hutchison said. “By Wednesday night, most of the vendors had already gone through their normal week’s supplies. They had to order more. They were pleased and amazed,” she said. “Everybody came out and had fun at the fair. I would call it a huge success!”

Bustos gets a real ‘taste’ of the Carroll County Fair By TOM KOCAL Prairie Advocate TKocal@prairieadvocate.com MILLEDGEVILLE – U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos, D-East Moline, put her taste buds to work as an honorary judge at the open and junior culinary baking competition at the Carroll County Fair on Aug. 5. With technical assistance from judges Sally Phillips and Nancy Ditmar, Bustos judged yeast breads, cereal cookies and cherry pies. “The bread we chose was the clear winner, it tasted wonderful,” Bustos said. “The
winning cookie was so good, it was hard not to eat all of them! And the cherry pie competition was close. I liked the delicious, decorative crust on one pie, but the winner tasted much sweeter.” The yeast bread winner was Emily Pena from Humble, Texas. Donna Young of Sterling was the cereal cookie winner, and Alissa Ziegler of Polo won with her sweet cherry pie. Liz Hutchison, fair board president, gave Bustos a tour of the fairgrounds that included the exhibition building, 4-H projects, and junior beef judging.

Groundbreaking decision on wastewater project In-system work to begin after council approval By MICHAEL MILLER For Prairie Advocate SAVANNA — Ground will be broken Thursday on the in-system portion of the city’s sewer project after a bid from Fischer Excavating for $2.478 million was approved by the Savanna City Council on Aug. 5. The council had given tentative approval in July, and met in special session last week after the state
Economic Development Administration gave its OK. The work includes piping from lift stations to the new wastewater treatment plant and reapairs to the recycled outfall piping from the new treatment facility to the river. Sharon Pepin of Communit Funding and Planning Services in Stockton, which is handling grant administration, said the EDA required a resolution from the city stating it would be going forward with the bid award despite it being about $5,000 more than the engineer’s estimate and the amount budgeted
by the city. The resolution also states that the city will proceed with bidding on the wastewater treatment facility. Pepin said the engineer’s opinion was that rebidding the in-system work would likely result in an even higher amount, given the $1.1 million gap between the Fischer bid and the next lowest bid. The city hopes also to stay on track with the EDA’s requirement to begin construction Friday. It will reopen bidding on the wastewater treatement plan construction, perhaps in January, after the only
bid received was $2 million more than estimated and budgeted. Pepin said January will be “a better competitive bidding time.” “There’s a lot of contractors who said that they’ve got so much on their plate up before winter that any new projects they’re just throwing high numbers at,” Pepin said. She said that none of the $2 million in EDA grants would be spent until the wastewater treatment plant construction bid was awarded, so it was possible for the city to return that funding should the amounts

bid be so high as to be unmanageable. That money isn’t available, Pepin said, until there are contracts on both the plant and in-system work. Pepin said there are two other grants totaling about $800,000 that will help the city fund the projects. The in-system work must be done eve if bids for the plan still are too high. Alderman Jeff Griswold asked Pepin how the bids for Morrison’s sewer plant construction had come in lower than the engineer’s estimates. Pepin said that because the Savanna project was
being funded by an IEPA loan, it was under certain requirements, such as holding a mandatory pre-bid meeting with all contractors. Three interested contractors missed that meeting, Pepin said, and therefore were not able to bid. Pepin said all measures were taken to ensure everyone knew about the requirements and meetings. Mayor Tony McCombie said that two other contractors said they hoped the city would rebid the project, including Leander Construction, which submitted the only initial bid.

SAVANNA — The life of Helen Scott Hay will be the topic at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Savanna Museum and Cultural Center, 406 Main St. Helen Scott Hay, born on a farm near Lanark and raised on a farm in Savanna, rose to international prominence for her work with the American Red Cross in the early 1900s. She was a nursing supervisor in several states before she became the director of nursing personnel in Europe, where she helped organize several nursing schools. She received many awards and medals from foreign governments and world organizations, as well as from the American Red

Do older people not feel the heat like younger people do? She also takes her little dog everywhere and leaves it in the car. Is that a safe thing to do? Roasting Ralph Dear Ralph: A 2006 study done at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio, found that 90 percent of participants older than 65 knew about
the risks associated with heat and humidity but believed they applied to people older than they were. “As we age, and especially as we get into our 70s or 80s, we don’t tolerate heat or perceive Amy the dangers as well as Wiltshire when we were younger,” said Dr. Corey Slovis, head of emergency medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nahsville, Tennessee. Here are some tips to help seniors cope with hot weather: Stay hydrated to prevent dehydration. Dehydration can cause dizziness, which
increases risk for falls, inability to sweat, heat stroke or heat exhaustion. Stay someplace cool. Avoid going out during the hottest part of the day, and drink plenty of liquid. Additionally, heat exhaustion and heat stroke can make medical conditions, such as heart disease and lung disease, much worse. According to the American Humane Society, on a warm day the temperature inside a car can exceed 120 degrees in a matter of minutes, even with the windows partially down. Your pet can quickly suffer brain damage or die from heat stroke or suffocation. Pets also can be stolen when left alone in a car. Suggest to your grandmother that she leave her pup at home in an area with plenty of water to drink, in the shade. Amy

THOMSON – For Thomson and many nearby towns in the northwest corner of Illinois, the past few years have been a roller coaster ride. When would the long-promised federal prison be opened? The one that was supposed to boost the towns’ economies, swell their populations, and increase school enrollments? Prison jobs also mean more students in local schools By JERMAINE PIGEE Sauk Valley Media jpigee@saukvalley.com MORRISON – Not only is the Thomson Correctional Center bringing jobs to the area, it’s also bringing more students to local school districts. The federal prison is expected to employ 1,100 people once fully operational. There are about 200 employees now working there. About 18 miles away, the Morrison School District has had 25 new students in the past 2 years because of the prison. cial enrollment numbers are known in a few weeks, Superintendent Scott Vance said. “This comes at an opportune time for us because our enrollment has been declining somewhat,” Vance said. “We could not ask for a better time for students to come in.” Vance said students have been coming to the school from across the country, including California, Florida, New York and Colorado. “We are also seeing students from different cultures, and that is a positive for us,” Vance said. “We are adding some diversity to the district. It’s neat to see how they are interacting with the other students.” The district has not had to increase staff, however, Vance said. “If more students come to the school, we will have to add staff,” he said. “Because of our decline in enrollment, we can take students in and not have to had applied for numerous positions at the Lexington prison, he said, but the competition was high. “Everybody wants to work there,” he said. “Transfers and then veterans usually take the rest. Not all local school districts have been impacted by the prison. Chadwick-Milledgeville Superintendent Tim Schurman said enrollment is steady.

Molly’s Kitchen & Bar offers ‘something different’ By CHRISTI WARREN Sauk Valley Media cwarren@saukvalley.com
MOUNT CARROLL – Molly McDonough has been working in kitchens all of her life, professional and personal. She grew up cooking with her mother. Her husband is 31-yearold Ben Johnson, and they own Molly’s Kitchen & Bar, 110 W. Market St. in Mount Carroll, where the main focus, other than providing delicious food, is to keep everything local. Molly, 29, met Ben in college on the East Coast. From there, they ended up in Los Angeles, where they lived for 6 years. Molly worked in kitchens professionally before they came out to Mount Carroll one winter and rented a house. The two are musicians also, and were in Mount Carroll for the winter to write an album. And then they kind of fell in love with the town. And then the space where Molly’s Kitchen & Bar is now went up for sale. And then they bought it, and bought their house, too. “It was just one thing after another,” Molly said. The restaurant opened in July 2014. “My mother-in-law grew all the produce for us just out of the kindness of her heart, and she did an amazing job, and we had an incredible product,” Molly said. “I was just kind of like, let’s go with this.” She’d have customers come up to her and say they didn’t think they liked kale, or they didn’t think they liked Swiss chard, but they liked her food. “So that was my motivation,” Molly said. “That we needed to have something different in this area. We needed to be a restaurant, not just a bar, and it’s the kind of cooking that I like to do: really simple.” The idea of sourcing things locally is important to Molly. She works with a local grower, another college friend, Kate Wood, who owns the Kitchen Garden in Mount Carroll, to make sure that as much of her produce as possible comes from the area. It’s an ethos that she inhabits fully – even the beautiful wooden bar and dining tables were sourced locally. They came from the tree farm of Ben’s family, Johnson Creek Hardwood. “It’s about keeping the town,” she said. “That’s why you show at your local grocery store. That’s why you support the other artists. That’s the whole point

But ideally, she said,
everything on her menu would be locally sourced. “It’s hard for me,” she said. “Nobody’s come to me to say, Hey, we’d love to source for you.” Any takers?

LANARK — Here are three more 2015 football and volleyball previews of the area’s upcoming varsity teams. Let’s start with volleyball.
NUIC Upstate Division
Freeport Aquin Lady Bulldogs First-year head coach Michelle Gallagher and assistant Robyn Borgmann lead this season’s varsity volleyball squad. They will lead a team consisting of players Josie Ehlbeck (MH), Bridgett Hunzicker (RS), Cassie Arndt (OH), Ana Awender (S), Katya Awender (DS), Mallory Furlong (OH), Samantha Grinell (RS). Work ethic and athleticism are the strengths of this Lady Bulldog team, Gallagher said, adding, “We are low on numbers. We will need all our players to be healthy all season long.” As a new coach, Gallagher said it is hard to gauge other area teams to watch. “I wasn’t around last season to know who the traditionally strong teams are. However, I believe that every team is beatable and that all teams should be respected. Any team can win on any given night, so I look forward to preparing for them all.”

We need to improve on the line from last year and limit the explosive plays that we allow our opponents,” Hofer said. “Coming into this season, Stockton should be considered the favorite in the small school division. AMARILLO, Texas – Robin Lynn Beitler Nielsen, 49, had a heart of gold for everyone that she met. She was kind and generous. She will be dearly missed by those who knew her best. Robin passed away Tuesday, July 21, 2015, at her home in Amarillo, Texas. Robin was born May 21, 1966, in Kailua, Hawaii, to Richard and Carol Beitler. The middle child, she was the arbitrator between her sister and brother. Robin grew up as a military child and the family moved around the to Savanna in 1977. THOMSON – Robert John Bielema, 52, of Thomson, died Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2015, at Mercy Medical Center North in Clinton, Iowa. Bob was born Dec. 29, 1962, in Clinton to Robert and Carol Ann (Johnson) Bielema. He attended Thomson schools, and graduated with the Class of 1981. Bob married Jeanine Jamison on Oct. 1, 1983, in Clinton. He owned and operated Bielema Auto Repair and Sales in Thomson for 33 years. Bob enjoyed his business, working on cars and being busy most of the time. Bob would say, “I would retire, but if my wife quits the paperwork, I’m done.” In his younger years, he ing with his father-in-law. He taught his kids how to workers and good men. He was very proud of them. He
also loved getting out of the shop and helping his farmer friends. Bob loved his coffee time and giving women from the community a hard time. He loved being there for people and helping his customers. Bob didn’t consider you a just customer, but a friend. He always was sad when he lost a customer, and would say, “I need younger customers and coffee drinkers.” Bob took pride in all the family and friends he helped throughout the years. Whether it was to even a place to live, he was always there for them. He was a good man, husband, father and son who loved his family, and will be missed by many. Bob will be dearly missed by his wife of 31 years, Jeanine; two sons, Robert (Haley) Bielema, Jr. and Kyle Bielema, both of Thomson; his mother, Carol (Bruce) Rieck of Sabula, Iowa, and two sisters, Dawn (Scott) Elliott of Thomson and LeAnne (John) Barsema of Fulton. STERLING – The Thomas Park pool has been dredged, and the new fountain installed, but the algae has proven to be a formidable foe. Last week, after battling the long run of heavy rains, the Sterling Park District had 6 feet of clean water in the pond, and 8,329 cubic yards of dirt drying for future use on the city’s riverfront. But it didn’t take long for the green scum to reappear. “It was less than a week, and the pond was threefourths full of algae again,” Parks Director Larry Schuldt said. Schuldt is hopeful that the algae is of the residual
variety, and it shouldn’t be a long-term problem. “When the dredging was going on, the algae just kind of formed in the muck,” Schuldt said. The pond couldn’t be treated until the organisms made their reappearance. A fungicide spray, copper time Thursday. The spray also kills bacteria, and is often used on produce such as tomato plants. “We can use it to treat the pond regularly,” Schuldt said. “It should take about 5 days to get rid of what’s in there.” Regular treatment will likely be necessary, partly because of stormwater runoff and drainage from nearby farmland. By GLORIA YODER How about taking a peek into our home on a warm July day? The air feels thick and muggy. The way it looks, we’ll have a hot summer day for sure. There are tomatoes I’d like to turn into pizza sauce today, peaches to do at Mom’s. It’s 6 a.m. and my husband, Daniel, is ready to have some quiet moments of meditation. He loves sitting on the deck in the freshness of early morning spending time with God. By 7 a.m., Daniel has headed for the shop at my parents’ property, where he builds rustic furniture. Before he left we had breakfast and devotions together. Now, I’m ready to start the day. Nine-month-old Austin woke earlier than usual, so I decided to put him down for an early nap as well. After 15 minutes of rockboy simply wasn’t ready to shut his big

I thought, “That probably woke Austin.” I dashed over to him and sure enough, my big eyes popping open. Thankfully I was able to get him back to sleep again before too long. Heading back to the kitchen I set to work cutting up tomatoes, onions, and peppers. The clock’s hands seemed to go faster than mine. Soon it was time for lunch. I decided to keep it simple. We had ribs that Daniel grilled the evening before along with a tossed salad. After lunch I was ready to do one of my favorite steps in canning: Filling the jars. I enjoy working in the kitchen but there’s a special satisfaction of seeing rows of canned goods preserved for the months ahead. children and I all felt warm, tired and sticky, yet I was tickled with the 17 quart jars and nine pint jars of pizza sauce that had been made. The kitchen still needed a quick cleanup before I could leave for Mom’s house where my sister-in-law’s and I had planned to help her with peaches that Dad had picked in their orchard. I grabbed the broom and was sweeping the porch. I set the broom aside and opened the door. “Isn’t my kitten adorable?” she asked with a bright smile. “Yes, it is adorable,” I responded warmly. Motherhood does require a lot of interruptions, dedication and patience, yet is
rewarding in countless ways. Before long I was able to wrap everything up in the kitchen and we were on our way to Mom’s house eager to get out of the hot kitchen and ready to spend the afternoon with her and the rest of the family. Here is a favorite sauce recipe of ours. It is similar to pizza or spaghetti sauce and can be used to replace it in many recipes. It is also a delicious replacement for salsa. The parmesan cheese gives it an outstandbeat eaten fresh or canned. If you are using a Victorio strainer, tomaa blender they can be raw.
All-purpose Sauce
9 qts. tomato juice 1 gal. tomato paste 9 stalks of celery, chopped fine 9 medium onions, chopped 4 green peppers, diced 2-3/4 C parmesan cheese 3 C sugar 1 qt. ketchup 6 T paprika 6 T salt 3 T dry mustard 3 T chili power 3 T garlic powder 3 T oregano 2 T black pepper Cut the tomatoes into chunks and blend in blender until smooth. Cook celery, peppers, and onions until tender. Bring to boil. Combine all ingredients in a large canner. Bring to a boil and as soon as it begins boiling, remove from heat. Pour into sealable containers. Enjoy hot or cold as a dip for crackers. Makes 36 quarts.
