here have been books written about them, newspaper articles featured them, and pictures have been taken of only them. Some people even have collected them, driving many miles to move them for sentimental reasons.

“Teams” of privy diggers are not uncommon, especially out East. The privy, or outhouse as you may know it, is, however, becoming rare. They are unneeded today, except as a conversation subject or a handy spot to store garden tools and the hose. The old-time outhouse will eventually become a museum display. Nostalgia must grip those who recall that the outhouse door nearly always swung inward so the user’s foot could block someone coming in unexpectedly.

Hardly unexpected. One could hear the user-to-be breathing heavily from the long walk between the garden and the line-up of pie plant (rhubarb).

Another memory that some pass on was “papering” the plank walls of the privy. Not spending any money meant that the wall decoration was pages torn out of an old “Monkey Ward” catalog, each family member having a favorite section – guns and hunting equipment, the underwear section that Ma made the boys paper over, or current fashion. A neighbor actually did an excellent job of using wallpaper purchased for a dime at Hogan’s Drug Store. There’d been

Lanark man dies in Ogle County motorcycle crash CHRISTI WARREN For Prairie Advocate News MOUNT MORRIS – A Lanark resident was one of two men who died Sunday when their motorcycles crashed nearly head-on, the Ogle County Sheriff’s Department said in a release Monday.

Richard Zimmerman, 67, of Lanark, and formerly of Mount Morris, and Michael Gonzalez, 50, of Chicago, died in the crash, which happened about 11 a.m. along state Route 64, east of Mount Morris.

According to the sheriff ’s report: Zimmerman was eastbound on state Route 64 on a 1992 Harley Davidson, while Gonzalez was heading west on his 2009 Kawasaki.

Gonzalez was attempting to pass the eastbound lane, and collided with Zimmerman.

Zimmerman and his motorcycle skidded into the southside ditch; the Gonzalezes and their bike continued westbound for several hundred feet before winding up in the northside ditch.

The men were pronounced dead at the scene.

Alayna Stevens, 17, of Tonica, lost control of the vehicle she was driving south on state Route 73 north of Straddle Creek Road, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release. The vehicle rolled, coming to rest in a Stevens was taken by Lanark Ambulance to a REACT helicopter

IDNR biologists made recommendations for the coming season following a review of deer hunting harvest numbers, deer-vehicle accident data, a survey of Illinois deer hunters,

hemorrhagic disease reports and other factors.

“Solid science is the basis of our deer program,” Miller commitment to professional management of the state’s deer population to provide recreational opportunity while being mindful of public safety and the rights of property owners.”

In 2008, the IDNR began using trends in the rate of deervehicle accidents (DVA) as an index of deer population status in each county and adopted a

Walgreens’ pending decision leaves me wondering, what’s going to happen to the other Illinois success stories, the big-time corporations and the smalltown businesses?

Capitol Report One hundred and thirteen years ago, a boy from nearby Dixon opened a tiny drugstore in Chicago. That drugstore grew from one tiny store in 1901 to four stores by 1913, to 20 stores by 1919, to thousands of stores today. That boy from Dixon, Charles Walgreen, went from being a smalltown kid to an Illinois success story.

When I think of Charles, I think of the other Illinois success stories throughout our state’s history: the Kraft family in Stockton, who began a cheese factory in 1914 that became part of a worldwide conglomeration; the Chesney family in Freeport, who started a vending machine manufacCharles Walgreen turing company more than 25 years ago that now operates both in Freeport and across the globe; and even our small-town businesses like the Goldmoor Inn in Galena, one of the state’s premier luxury inns, or the Freeport Winter family’s construction business and recently opened brewery; the farmers from our district who feed America, the small-town insurance companies, banks, restaurants, and specialty shops.

As proud as I am that Charles Walgreen came from our state and from a small town not far outside the borders of our district, I am saddened by the news that the Walgreens chain is considering leaving the state, and even the country, to save itself billions of dollars in tax money.

While I don’t condone its leaving to escape paying taxes, as a small-town businessman myself burdened by Illinois’ heavy taxes, I do, in a sense, understand if Walgreens makes the decision to leave.

decision leaves me wondering, what’s going to happen to the other Illinois success stories, the big-time corporations and the small-town businesses? The big-time corporations can afford to move to another state with a smaller tax burden, or even leave the country for a tax haven like Switzerland. But what about the small-town businesses, the ones we shop at, buy our insurance from, and contract with to build our houses and

lay off their employees or, worse, close their doors because they can’t afford to leave the state and they can’t afford the heavy tax burden the state puts on them to pay for plenty of good things, like education and health care funding, but plenty of bad things, too, like government corruption and organizations like Quinn’s Neighborhood Recovery Initiative?

It’s time to do something. I don’t want to see another company leave Illinois or another small-town business shut its doors. I’m sick of seeing beautiful but empty downtown buildings in the towns throughout our district. I’m ready to see Illinois towns, and especially the towns in the 89th district, thrive economically.

It’s time to get rid of government corruption so the taxes Illinoisans pay end up in the right places, like funding for education, health care, and transportation. And maybe, just maybe, we’re getting on the right track in this area. House Bill 5503, sponsored by Republican state Rep. Tom Demmer, R-Dixon, and signed level. And HB 2747, signed into law two weeks ago, will bring better oversight to the management of state grant funds.

That’s a start, but there’s more that we can do. Lowering corporate taxes would help, because, unfortunately, right now, in Milton Friedman’s words, “We have a system that increasingly taxes work and subsidizes nonwork.� Instead of discouraging hard work and killing Illinois success stories before they start by burdening them, let’s light working by lowering the tax burden and making Illinois a state that works and, ultimately, succeeds.

I’ll admit the thought of a company that is essentially an American icon becoming a foreign corporation gives me pause.

After all, Walgreens is one of Illinois’ premier companies.

It was founded here in 1901 and And now they are talking about moving their headquarters to Switzerland.

But what exactly does it mean when a corporation becomes Swiss?

Will they start having complimentary fondue in the checkout lanes?

Will the pharmacist yodel instructions to customers in the drive through?

President Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society is just more than 50 years old. During this very long period, America’s great society nest has become huge and crowded.

Johnson declared war on poverty in January 1964. He then needed a poster child for his new campaign and chose my hometown – Inez, Kentucky. The famous TIME Magazine picture of Tom Fletcher and his family sitting on a porch with the president happened about 2 miles from my boyhood home.

Life changed for America in many ways in the ‘60s. The Civil Rights Act was vital and an important piece of Johnson’s war.

Helping kids go to college was a crucial investment in America’s future. At face value, it’s hard to knock most of the programs that have became permanent American

Reeder Every time that happens, it reminds us that the business climate in this country is not what it should be.

One has to ask, why would a corporation founded in Illinois 113 years ago want to become Swiss?

The answer is as obvious as the Matterhorn.

Corporate taxes in Illinois and the United States are too high.

Way too high.

The United States has the highest corporate tax rates on the planet.

And, you guessed it, Illinois has one of the highest state corporate tax rates in the U.S. Business corporations exist to make money by serving people.

And when government makes it harder to earn in one place, they will look elsewhere.

We can spend a lot of time bemoaning that fact, or simply acknowledge that is the case and work to create a climate that attracts

business and doesn’t repel jobs.

Still, the idea of Walgreens leaving is a bitter pill to swallow.

But here is the deal. When a company switches in what country it will be incorporated, as Walgreens is considering, it still pays taxes to the U.S. government on its U.S. earnings. And it would be paying them at the same rate that it always has.

On money it makes overseas, it would pay that country’s rate.

Seems fair, right?

Unfortunately, the U.S. expects companies headquartered here to pay the equivalent of the full U.S. rate on money earned elsewhere.

So, U.S. companies that do business overseas choose to move their headquarters elsewhere.

So, what’s the solution?

The answer would seem to be to lower the corporate income tax rate so that it is competitive with other Western nations. In fact, if the U.S. had the same tax policies as Switzerland – or most Western nations – Walgreens would pay billions less in taxes and wouldn’t be considering moving.

The billions saved could go to shareholders in the form of dividends, to employees through higher pay, and to customers through lower prices.

And what could be more American than that?

Most of us know someone who has used Medicare, Medicaid, federal help with college, food stamps, Head Start, Women and Infant Children and much, much more. With any thought whatsoever, we know that many of Johnson’s programs have been lifesavers for millions of Americans.

The problem is, how far do we go and for how long? Three-fourths of our national budget goes to Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and defense. I realize Johnson didn’t start Social Security or our defense program. However, his administration produced about 40 new programs. Most of them still exist in some form. Government programs seldom go away. They just get bigger and need more and more money.

I am all for helping people who really need it and are trying.

However, federal handouts can’t go on for a lifetime unless someone is truly disabled.

A lifetime of welfare is a personal and national debilitation.

One big problem is that all of The Great Society programs are enrolling more and more people.

In millions of cases, people hang on to their government support for

as long as possible. More people require more federal budget dollars.

These dollars come from the taxes of the American people. America is broke and going deeper into debt to keep our programs going.

The safety net programs of The Great Society era must be only safety nets. Millions should not be allowed to live in these programs forever. Whether it’s for 1, 2 or even 3 years, there must be a cutoff time when the government says, “No more.�

There comes a time when every family must insist that must help every child succeed.

This involves a major investment of our time and resources. Education or some type of training are vital to all.

However, the time comes – and it’s painful – when children have to leave the nest. If they do not, and survive.

Morrison council backs sales tax resolution for Nov. ballot PAM EGGEMEIER For Prairie Advocate News MORRISON – The city joined its school district July 28 in approving a resolution to put a sales tax referendum on the November ballot.

The council unanimously backed putting the sales tax increase before voters at its 1 percent maximum. If voters approved the measure, the exact amount of the tax would then be determined.

“Once it is approved, the council has to have another vote for how much it will be,” Mayor Everett Pannier said. “We could decide to just set it at a portion of that, and then we could use the rest later.”

For non-home rule municipalities, the tax is capped at 1 percent, and can only be instituted in onequarter increments.

Whiteside County schools will have the County School Facility Sales Tax on the November ballot.

That referendum will call for a 1-cent sales tax increase to be used only for school maintenance purposes.

While both entities agree that having both tax questions on the same ballot is not an ideal situation, they believe they had no other choice.

“It’s unfortunate, but it’s a sign of the times,” said Scott Vance, superintendent of Morrison Community Unit District 6. “State funding is down just about everywhere, and money is needed in municipalities and schools.”

As the second-largest school district in the county, Morrison stands to reap about $500,000, if the tax increase passes.

Vance said the school board would look to use some of the extra sales tax revenue to lighten the load on homeowners.

“Our board, historically, has voted to abate property taxes, so that is something for the voters to consider,” Vance said.

The school district is eyeing some big-ticket maintenance projects, including replacing two roofs and a boiler within the next few years.

The city said it would use the estimated $250,000 a year that the full 1 percent tax increase would bring for roads projects. Pannier said a study by an engineering group and the city’s public works department concluded that the city should be budgeting $400,000 a year for road work, and that isn’t happening.

Alderman reviewed a monthly engineering report from Fehr Graham, submitted by Noah Carmichael.

Approval was granted for the consent agenda, which included: 1.

July 14, 2014, regular session minutes; 2. Bills payable ($555,198.08); 3. June 2014 Treasurer’s Report.

Items for consideration and possible action included: 1. The annual award, established in 1994 by the General Assembly, recognizes residents of the state, ages 65 and older, who excel in the

Making business case for investing in Rural America TOM VILSACK U.S. Secretary of Agriculture These days, it seems like it’s easier than ever to turn a good idea into reality. This is the era of Kickstarter, where entrepreneurs can connect with potential investors at the click of a button.

Of course, it takes more than money to grow an idea. It takes an atmosphere that fosters creativity and rewards innovation. And at a deeper, less obvious level, it requires strong, secure infrastructure – roads and bridges, but also Internet access and community facilities like hospitals and schools—that improves connectivity and access to information, moves products to market, and makes communities competitive and attractive to new businesses and investments.

Part of the challenge we face in rural America is that in too many

places, infrastructure is outdated and cannot support the same kinds of opportunities that are easily found in cities and larger towns.

USDA itself has a strong record of supporting rural infrastructure upgrades. Our Rural Development program has a loan portfolio of more than $200 billion in direct and guaranteed loans. Yet, there continues to investment in rural America that exceeds our capacity.

We can’t address this disparity alone, which is why USDA, as part of the White House Rural Council, Investment Conference on July 23-24. This conference brought together key people from the investment community, rural areas and government to make the business case for investing in rural America.

In conjunction with the conference, we also announced a

$10 billion Rural Infrastructure Opportunity Fund. Supported entirely by private sector dollars with an initial investment Tom from CoBank, a Vilsack national cooperative bank and member of the Farm Credit System, and managed by Capitol Peak Asset Management, the fund offers a sustainable platform for new kinds of investors to inject billions into rural infrastructure projects.

The Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge has announced that 2014 applications for the special deer hunt at Lost Mound are available. Two managed deer hunts, one for youth ages 10-15 and one for adults with disabilities (16 and older), are conducted within designated Closed Areas of Lost Mound. All hunters must be accompanied by an able-bodied adult attendant who is capable of tracking and retrieving a deer.

The application period extends from Aug. 1 to Sept. 2 and is open to residents and non-residents.

The hunt for adults with disabilities will be Nov. 15-16, which is the Saturday and Sunday prior to the first Illinois Firearms Deer Season. A minimum P2a Illinois disability classification (or similar disability certification from non-resident states) is required. A Jo Daviess County deer permit is not needed to apply for this hunt, as this permit is provided by the Refuge.

Chadwick-Milledgeville teachers ink deal through 2016-17 Synopsis based on minutes from the July 23, 2014, meeting: MILLEDGEVILLE â&#x20AC;&#x201D; The regular meeting of the Chadwick-Milledgeville Board of Education was held Wednesday, July 23, 2014, in the Milledgeville High School library.

To kick off the meeting, the board heard a presentation from Mr. Kyle Aude regarding an Eagle Scout project. He proposed building a GaGa ball pit at the Chadwick School playground.

After the consent agenda was approved, the End of Year Summary ended the year with a modest surplus. Overall, the budget ended up fairly decent considering all of the extra expenses incurred with building maintenance issues.

Old business

The board approved several measures, including a resolution to revise the 2014-15 school calendar and waive a holiday, revising the start of the school day to 8:15 a.m., and waiving Veterans Day on Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2014. Superintendent Schurman noted that this action is required when revisions are made or a school does not observe a federal

or state holiday. He noted that the district will conduct Veterans Day assemblies at both schools to honor those who have served.

Mandatory board member training was discussed. and the board accepted a bid for $901 from Mr. Mark Conkrite for a 1998 Chevy Lumina.

New business

- Designated Superintendent Schurman to sign off on accounts and checks on behalf of the district and Mr. Maloy to sign off on activity accounts and checks.

- Approved 2014-15 School Improvement Plans for Milledgeville Elementary, Chadwick Elementary, Chadwick Junior High, and Milledgeville High schools.

Superintendent Schurman noted that each of the proposed plans includes improvement goals which are developed using survey data and student assessment results.

Two goals were chosen for Chadwick Junior High: To continue the transition to the Common Core, and reading/vocabulary improvement. At Chadwick Elementary, two goals also were chosen: To improve student skills in writing extended

responses, and to increase the use and understanding of informational text.

Milledgeville Elementary will focus on research skills and math improvement with a focus on measurement. Milledgeville High School has a variety of goals detailed in its progress document.

- Approved placing on the Nov. 4 ballot a facility sales tax resolution.

The board went into executive session to consider the appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance, or dismissal of or legal counsel for the district, including hearing testimony on a complaint lodged against an employee or against legal counsel for the district to determine its validity; collective negotiating matters between the public body and its employees or their representatives or deliberations concerning salary schedules for one or more classes of employees 5ILCS 120/2 (c) (1), as amended by P.A. 93-0057. The board entered closed session at: 7:34 p.m. and exited closed session at: 8:13.

Homegrown By Heroes at Illinois farmers markets coming soon SPRINGFIELD â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Illinois veterans soon will have the opportunity to leverage a national branding campaign to help market their farm products. The Homegrown By Heroes initiative, a product labeling program, will allow Illinois farmers, served or are still serving in any branch of the U.S. military to use a special logo on their agricultural products. Farmer training and education also are large components of the initiative, which will make informational resources available to veterans desiring to farm in the state.

Visit the unique, indoor Twin City Farmers Market The Twin City Market began as a project of the Northwest Illinois Ag Coalition (NIAC). TCM started operations as a farmers market in July 2005 after the generous contribution of a building and funds from the City of Sterling.

HCC Foundation Shindig promises good eats at the Country Fair FREEPORT â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Troy and Donna Lessman of Lake Carroll have been selected by the Highland Community College Foundationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Shindig Committee to cater hot and cold food dishes at â&#x20AC;&#x153;Country Fair,â&#x20AC;? a charity fundraising event and auction to be held on Aug. 16 at the country Victorian home of Rocky and Dawn Zuberbuhler, west of Freeport.

Obituaries Howard Johnson Howard Paul Johnson was a loving dad, grandpa, and husband.

He died at the age of 82, on Monday, July 28, 2014, at Big Meadows Nursing Home, surrounded by his loving family. A funeral service will be held Friday, August 1, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. at the Hope United Methodist Church in Chadwick, Illinois. A visitation will be held prior to the service from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., also at the church.

Burial will take place in Lower York Cemetery, Thomson, Illi-

Howard was born on December 16, 1931, the son of John and Florence (Williams) Johnson in Thomson, Illinois.

Howard proudly served in the United States Army from 1954-

1956, stationed in Anchorage, Alaska, during the Korean Conflict. After Howard’s active duty, he served in the Army Reserve.

On June 25, 1954, he married Dorothy Newendyke in Chadwick, Illinois.

Howard worked for the Carroll County Highway Department for 18 years, retiring in 1995.

He also enjoyed farming in the area for over 20 years. He was a loyal member of the Hope United Methodist Church, the Savanna Moose Lodge, the Thomson American Legion, and the Carroll

County Sherriff’s Auxiliary. Out of all of Howard’s activities, his favorite was spending time with his friends, family, and especially his grandchildren.

Howard is survived by his wife, Dorothy; three children, Mark (Deanna) Johnson of Lanark, Illinois, David (Betsy) Johnson of Belvidere, Illinois, Carole Zickau of Mt. Carroll, Illinois; seven

JDC Foundation acquires remainder of Chapman Village site complex HANOVER – The Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation (JDCF) is pleased to announce that it has purchased 98 acres of land that will become an addition to its Wapello Land & Water Reserve just south of downtown Hanover. This purchase will secure the preservation of the entire Chapman Archaeological that tells the story of two Native American cultures coming together to form an entirely new society.

In addition, the parcel will connect to the Hanover Bluff complex of natural lands, as well as the Foundation’s Eagles Nest Land & Water Reserve, creating an expanded natural wildlife. Funding for this purchase was awarded to JDCF by the Grand Victoria Foundation and the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation.

In 2006, JDCF purchased the 79-acre John Chapman site – known today as the Wapello Land & Water Reserve – primarily to preserve the cultural and natural resources found there. The cultural site depicts a rare blending of two cultures along the Apple River – the Late Woodland and Mississippian peoples – approximately 1100 to 1300 A.D. “Until this time, these cultures had remained distinct with the Late Woodland peoples inhabiting northern Illinois while the Mississippian peoples lived further south in the St. Louis area. Sometime around the 12th century, the Mississippians migrated north and encountered Late Woodland settlements such as the one at the John Chapman site,” said Phil Millhouse, senior research archaeologist with the Illinois State Archaeological Survey. “Within several generations, the people along the Apple River were no longer just Woodlanders or Mississippians, but they had created their own unique identity as a part of the emerging Oneota cultural tradition.”

The Wapello Land & Water Reserve is a wonderful example of a restored prairie. Although it is only 64 acres in size, there is a very large diversity of insects and spiders living there. species found in the Apple River as it

was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009. This new addition, known as the Grace Chapman site, will help archaeologists gain a better understanding of how the meshing of these two cultures impacted Native American societies in the upper Midwest following the 12th century when surface collections are done at the site in 2015.

“In order to understand the Oneota culture that developed from this contact, we need to comprehend the local societies that were indigenous to the area. Preserving the Grace Chapman mounds gives us the ability to do this,” Millhouse added.

Natural resource protection and restoration were also motivating factors in JDCF’s decision to purchase the additional acres for the Wapello Reserve. The new site provides a buffer to rare and endangered mussel

black sandshell, purple wartyback, and spike. New habitat and corridors for native birds, plants, insects, and animals will be created through the establishment of 51 acres into a prairie that will connect to the existing 64 acre prairie at Wapello.

The positive impact of the Wapello addition will be felt beyond the prairie as well. The community of Hanover has embraced the current preserve since its purchase in 2006.

Early on, public input was sought by JDCF to help envision the property’s future. Large crowds turned out to brainstorm ideas on public education, recreation, community identity, and the protection of the cultural and natural resources found there.

This group evolved into the Friends of the Hanover Land & Archaeological Reserve, a core of dedicated volunteers who took on the task of stewarding the property

and promoting it to the public. Their work continues today through workdays on the prairie picking seed, battling invasive plants, and maintaining the trail system, as well as through monthly meetings to plan community events such as the Field Museum Bio-Blitz held in 2012 and 2013 and the annual Native American Prairie Fest scheduled this year for July 2 – events that are bringing the entire community together.

“Never in my wildest dreams did I think it (Wapello) would bring something like the Field Museum to Hanover,” said Kathy Gable, head of the Hanover Chamber of Commerce and lifelong resident of the village. “Having them here has brought business not only to our main street, but to every aspect of Hanover. The community has been uplifted. ... To see our mayor out mowing the trails for free, to have our town board, our chamber, our church leaders, and our park district

all behind it. Everyone feels that this is the best thing to hit Hanover.”

Finally, once open to the public in 2018, the addition will connect JDCF’s Eagles Nest Land & Water Reserve, also along the Apple River, to Wapello and the larger Hanover Bluff complex, a 1,758 acre complex of preserves and conservation easements owned by JDCF, Illinois DNR, Natural Land Institute, the Prairie Enthusiasts, and the Nature Conservancy. When combined, this will be one of the largest natural areas in the county for hiking, bird and wildlife watching, and exploring Native American history. Stay tuned as this exciting project begins to unfold.

“JDCF is so grateful to the Grand Victoria Foundation and Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation for funding the acquisition and early phases of restoration of the Wapello addition”, said Steve Barg, Executive Director of JDCF. “These foundations continue to lead the way in conservation of natural resources throughout Illinois.”

As I was driving from shop to shop, I couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t help but think how none of our programs would be successful without our volunteers.

The Farm Shop tour was an idea our Foundation came up with as a fundraiser for the scholarships they give out. I have many thanks to give out from the shop tour. First off, those who let us into their shops, Ludwig Family Farms, Flikkema Farms, Daehler Farms, and Denny & Karen Schriner Family Farm. This like this and it was very appreciated the way they all opened up their farms to us without any hesitation.

I know they put in time cleaning, prepping, and more.

Also, a big thank you goes out to our many sponsors. The four shop sponsors Carroll Service, Carroll Tiling, COUNTRY Financial, Exchange State Bank. Without their backing we would not have had as successful of an event as we did.

We also had tour sponsors which included: 1st Farm Credit Services, DeKalb Seeds, Eastland Feed & Grain, Kaus Seed Inc, Meador Ag Services, Musser Crop Services, Sloan Implement, and Wyffels. Just like many of our other programs, it

It was great to see faces of some of our members who we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t see often. That to me was one of the goals, to get more involved in Farm Bureau events.

We will certainly be working on another tour for next year!

CHADWICK â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Daniel Nardini, born near a farm in Bloomington in 1960, realized that he had a passion to learn about other languages and cultures at the tender age of 15.

China, Taiwan, the Koreas, and its peninsulas, cast a spell on Daniel, and he wanted more. â&#x20AC;&#x153;For a good part of my life, I wanted to learn something about Chinese culture and history,â&#x20AC;? Nardini said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was always a dream of mine.â&#x20AC;?

A Beloit College graduate, he landed a job as an English teacher in Taiwan in 1990 after reading an ad about the opportunity in a newspaper.

He lived on a farm in the countryside of Taichung, the third-largest city in Taiwan.

The room and board werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t part of the program that he had been contracted for, but he didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to stay in the city because it was jammed with people. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re in the city ... it was crowded. It was kind of hard on me,â&#x20AC;? Nardini said.

Record number of particpants in 2014 Jo Daviess 4-H Fair The Jo Daviess County 4-H took place in Elizabeth on July 14-17.

During this time period, record numbers of 4-Herâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s participated in the 4-H Show, and 33 members will be travelling to the Illinois State Fair to show their projects in the state 4-H Fair in August.

Jo Daviess County 4-H has 180 members who participated in over 75 project areas during the 4-H Fair. Project areas include visual arts, rocketry, livestock, small animals, crops, collections, animal science, woodworking, sewing and textiles, foods and nutrition, theater, and others. The most important part of the 4-H project is what the youth learn from their project study and the showing experience. Through participa-

tion in 4-H, the learning process, teamwork, leadership, and community service are experienced throughout the year, culminating in the 4-H Shows during the fair.

4-H is a volunteer-led organization which is part of the University of Illinois Extension.

Jo Daviess County 4-H is supported by community members and businesses who donate to sponsor trophies, who serve as project area superintendents and recorders, and judges, as well as organizational and project leaders who work with staff and member throughout the year.

He paid the equivalent of $150 a month for rent. That was a good deal, and it was out of the city, just like he wanted.

“The average temperature from March until November was 95 degrees to 105 degrees,” he said. He rode a bicycle 8 miles to work on most days.

It was around this time that his mom died, and his dad lost the house. Nardini worked on the island for about 4 years, and returned to Illinois for about a year and a half.

Job security didn’t exist for Nardini stateside, so he took up a teaching gig at a private school in South Korea’s capital, Seoul, in 1996.

“Having lived among Taiwanese, it wasn’t a major hurdle going to South Korea,” he said.

“South Korea: Our Story,” chronicles his year in Seoul, and life after leaving.

“This [book] is a dedication to my wife,” Nardini said.

The story makes clear his devotion to Jade, a native of Seoul. The couple now live in Chadwick.

For 5 years, between 1997 to 2002, he and Jade traded letters and emails to stay in touch. It would take about 7 to 10 days for a letter to reach Jade. This was before text messaging and video chat became commonplace.

In May 2002, a “small group” of about 200 people witnessed them marry in Seoul, but it would take 2 more years for the U.S. government to grant his bride permanent U.S. residency.

“She’s a wonderful, kind, sweet, very gentle lady. And very intelligent,” Nardini said of his wife of more than a decade.

He also hopes the book “gives some cultural and historical background on the Republic of Korea.”

“A lot of things were happening during this time period that made it hard for the both of us,” he said, referring to a sharp change in political climate at home because of the terrorist attacks of 2001.

Around the same time, changes came to South Korea. A left-wing president had been elected who wasn’t pleased with the Americans. Within the same year that fanfare welcomed time, people rallied in the streets of the capital protesting the impending American invasion of Iraq.

“We saw what came next … the anti-American riots,” he said. “It was a bad turning point.”

By Gloria Yoder Last weekend, we had the opportunity to host my husband Danielâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s parents and siblings from Danville, Ohio. We always enjoy spending time together, but this was an extra treat since we had not seen them for quite some time.

While they were here, Danielâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s brother, John, who also lives in this community, discovered they have corn that is ready to be harvested.

So we rolled up our sleeves and worked together. Many hands certainly made the work light. Before long the task was completed with more than 40 quarts of corn in the freezer.

Our 2-year-old daughter Julia loved all the action. Playing with her little cousins is always a highlight for her. All too soon it was time for everyone to go back home again.

Thankfully, we are blessed with good memories that are tucked away in safe keeping.

And speaking of memories, perhaps it would be interesting for you to join me in looking back over the past years to take a peek at Danielâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and my life during our growing up years?

On Aug. 28, 1988, Lydia Yoder beamed down at her newborn son. What a miracle and a gift from God! Danielâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mother proved to have an exceptional motherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s heart was soon obvious that he would have his daddyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s curls, with Danielâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s being a bit lighter â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a golden brown. His parents, Ephraim and Lydia, diligently taught their children the ways of the Lord and were an example of prayer and dedication to God. With six brothers and one sister, life on a dairy farm didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get boring.

At 7 years old, Daniel was responsible to help with his part of milking cows by hand. Eventually the farm was replaced with a pallet shop. He and the Yoder brothers pitched in once, more determined to help Dad make a go of the business. They put their heart in it, working swiftly and steadily.

Tobias, Danielâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s oldest brother, owned a landscaping business. After his younger brothers were old enough to replace him at the pallet shop, he had the opportunity to help Tobias with building retaining walls, patios, and other landscaping. That was something he always enjoyed doing.

Meanwhile, 50 miles away, and a little over a year after Danielâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s birth, David and Dorcas Raber had a newborn daughter. Baby Gloria was born on Nov. 12, 1989.

SECTION 2: That the appropriation herein made for any purpose shall be regarded as the maximum amounts to be expended under the respective appropriation account and shall not be construed as a commitment, agreement, obligation or liability of the Shannon Fire Protection District, and such appropriation being subject to further approval as to expenditure thereof by the Board of Trustees.

SECTION 3: That an estimate of revenue the Shannon Fire Protection District anticipates receiving during the instant fiscal year is as follows: Ambulance Fees $25,000.00; Loan $0.00; Property Taxes $185,508.00; Replacement Taxes $2,000.00; Grants & Other Income $12,500.00; Start of Year Balance $28,781.34 TOTAL ESTIMATED REVENUE $253,789.34 SECTION 4: That the amount appropriated for each object and purpose shall be as follows: Administrative $117,607.44; Personnel $30,000.00; Equipment $48,181.90; Vehicle $37,500.00; Facility $20,500.00 TOTAL APPROPRIATIONS $253,789.34 SECTION 5: That if any section, subdivision, or sentence of this ordinance be held invalid or unconstitutional, such decision shall not affect the validity of the remaining portion of the ordinance.

SECTION 6: That within 30 days after adoption, the ordinance be published and a certified copy of this ordinance shall be filed with the Carroll, Stephenson, and Ogle County Clerks.
