New place for Midwestern BioAg to call home Ready to be ‘part of the Milledgeville community’ By TOM KOCAL Prairie Advocate TKocal@prairieadvocate.com

MILLEDGEVILLE – Midwestern BioAg broke ground July 28 on a 17,000-square-foot fertilizer blending and distribuendeavor since its founding in 1984. Company representatives presented a program to local farmers and state and vilthem for a catered lunch and conversation. Midwestern BioAg is the industrial park at the intersection of state Route 40 and Shannon Road since it was established 7 years ago this month; it bought all 30.3 acres. It plans to use 10 acres and promote development of the rest, including putting in infrastructure for the other lots, and may add a future research and development center. “There is real potential for developing the rest of this industrial park,” said Galen Wirth, village president. “It’s been a 2-year process with Midwestern BioAg. The Village Board and I think this is one of the great ventures that we’ve tackled, along with the new Dollar General that opened a year ago this month. And it will be a real asset to the region and the community.” Wirth, ChadwickMilledgeville schools superintendent and former teacher, said it was particularly wonderful to see a former student return to the

Tony Michaels is CEO of the Blue Mounds, Wisconsin-based company. “This is exciting for us, we’ve built since 2006, and we can now bring our products and services to the farmers that we already serve here, with the potential to help more farmers increase their yields and lower their costs,” Michaels said.

Adolph has been a Midwestern BioAg since March 2012, focusing on technical agronomy to soil science. “This is a huge opportunity. There’s a lot on the line. It’s nice to be able to come back to the community where I grew up and give something back,” he said. Adolph lives in Morrison with his wife, Lara, and two children. He is the son of Kevin and DiAnn Adolph of rural Chadwick. Gary Zimmer is president and co-founder of Midwestern BioAg, which

began blending fertilizers in Seward 31 years ago. He and his three partners moved company headquarters to Blue Mounds 3 years later. “Now we’re back in Illinois. The reason is interesting. We do the least amount of business in Illinois because the land is so good,” Zimmer said. “You can get a good crop without putting a lot of effort into it. Add a little ammonia, and you’ll get 150 bushel corn. People were happy with that. “Now, with the price of land, seed, and everything else, and with some farmers getting 400-bushels-an-acre corn, these same farmers realize they have to look at a different way to do fertilizer and take care of their soil.” HOME CONTINUED ON A4

City gets OK to rebid wastewater treatment plant By MICHAEL MILLER For Prairie Advocate SAVANNA —The Illinois Economic Development Association has given the city the OK to rebid the wastewater treatment plant construction, and said the process will not jeopardize a $2 million grant received for this project, Public Works Superintendent John

Lindeman told the council Wednesday. A ground-breaking ceremony still is slated for Aug. 13. The bids the city initially received for the plant and the piping from the lift stations to the new facility were about $3.66 million more than budgeted, so the city asked for an extension so MSA Engineering and

costs, Lindeman said. Three bids were received for the piping; he recommended the council accept a $2,477,971 bid from Fischer Excavating. It’s higher than the $1.85 million estimated cost, but $1.1 million lower than the next-lowest bid. “I’d be willing to gamble that if we turned down that bid and ultimately rebid this, we’re probably going

MORRISON — This year’s Evening Farmers Market and Taste of Morrison was a “huge success,” organizers say. Corinne Bender of the Morrison Farmers’ Market Committee credited the vendors, businesses, city employees, community groups, and market committee members who gave of their time and effort for the July 29 event. Farmer’s National Bank sponsored the evening, and “the Morrison High School basketball team members and varsity coaches were great, too. Without their help, the evening would not have been imaginable,” Bender said. “We had 35 vendors. Over 500 people attended.

To further this growth, agriculture community members needs to ask ourselves: Are we doing enough to support and grow agricultural tourism? Farm Bureau members need to ask themselves: Do IFB policies cover the needs to grow agricultural tourism? Now is the time to review the organization’s policy and provide feedback. Your Illinois Farm Bureau Policy 52, Agricultural Tourism, provides you with the information that IFB uses to guide our involvement. We recognize that agricultural tourism serves as an important marketing strategy and also helps to educate the public about

SAVANNA — Don Mathey, West Carroll softball head coach, was glad to have Kaitlin Mathey on staff during the summer league. “Kaiti is my 22-year-old daughter,” Mathey said. “She was a volunteer assistant to the West Carroll softball team this past year. I had surgery on July 2 at the University of Iowa Hospital, so she basically managed the team. I was there the last 2 weeks, but just kept the book and sat in the dugout.” The West Carroll High School 6-2 in the Morrison High School Summer League played Wednesday nights at the Morrison Sports Complex. Roger Ellerbrock also assisted with the coaching duties. Teams in the league were Morrison, Pearl City, Fulton, Bureau Valley, Sauk Valley Storm, Dixon and West Carroll. “It was a fun summer,” Kaitlin said. “I enjoyed coaching the girls. It’s great to be able to share my love for the sport with new, upcoming athletes.” In summer league, the girls have a chance to improve their skills without the added pressure of season ball, she said. “This group of girls has a lot of potential, and I’m very excited to see what they can accomplish in the spring. Girls came out to improve, and our numbers were good each week, which was a good sign. They came ready to learn and better themselves; it’s refreshing to see girls with such positive

We need experience,” he said. “I saw some potential, but we only have two players who play travel ball right now. We need a lot of mental work especially with base running. We did have pitchers throw strikes and we played pretty good defense. We hope to be competitive with everyone next season.” He hopes all the girls on the summer team will play next spring. “I anticipate low numbers on the fresh/soph team, as no incoming freshmen showed up for any summer practices

Obituaries Arlette LaVonne Bushman

MILLEDGEVILLE — Arlette LaVonne Bushman, 98, of Milledgeville, died Thursday, June 25, 2015. LaVonne was born June 10, 1917, in Chadwick, the daughter of Allan and Verna (Hinkel) Zugschwerdt. LaVonne attended Hitt and Wood schools, both on the outer borders of Milledgeville. She also attended Chadwick grade school and high school. She married Leo Virgil Bushman on June 30, 1937, at the Chadwick Lutheran minister’s home. LaVonne’s sister and brother-in-law, Marian and Arnold Roberts, were their matron of honor and best man. At the age of riding her Cub Cadet lawn mower during the summer, tending to the pulling of the weeds in her garden, and she opened and watched the gate while her son fed the cattle.

Survivors include one son, Ronald (Judith) Bushman of Sterling; two grandchildren, Christine Marie (Mark Sotelo) Bushman of Sterling, and Julie Ann (Rick Shippee) Bushman of Winslow; and one greatgrandchild, Sierra Nicole Bushman Sotelo of Sterling. She also was preceded in death by her parents, and two sisters, Marian Lucille Roberts, and Alta May Zugschwerdt. A private graveside service was held June 30, at Chadwick Cemetery. Filling in while Gloria takes a short break

By KEVIN WILLIAMS Editor, The Amish Cook Gloria will return next week I wanted to step in this week to give Gloria a “summer break” and, more important, to thank readers for welcoming Gloria into your homes and lives over the past year. Gloria has been sharing with us now for a full year. How did 12 months slip by so speedily? I look forward to more educational and entertaining dispatches from Flat Rock, Illinois in the future, along with Gloria’s delicious recipes. Meanwhile, as editor, I continue my behind-thescenes work, learning, exploring and writing about the Plain People. In fact, as I write this, I’ve got a photocopy of an old article I wrote that appeared in print on Aug. 26, 1990 in The Middletown Journal. I was a cub reporter for

the paper and had written a story about the German Baptists, a group much like, and often confused with, the Amish. In the article I quoted a German Baptist farmer who said: “Fifty years from now, our ways may be different, but our faith, I hope, will not be.” And we are half way there. That same sentence could be applied to the Amish. Their faith, in my eyes, is largely unchanged, but their ways have been changing slowly. Cellphones are fairly common among the Amish and in some settlements buggies are rarely used, replaced instead with tractors and non-Amish taxis. The arrival of the Internet has touched off a spirited debate about the future. Yet, the Amish remain an intriguing touchstone to a simpler time. I’ve taken my almost-2-year-old daughter, Aster, to visit Amish farms and auctions and I hope I see in her an appreciation of a slower, pre-Internet era, an era she’ll never know. By the way, Gloria’s community chooses not to use cellphones and electricity, even in business settings. She told me they would “radically oppose” any introduction of the Internet. It’s common for the public to hear the term “Amish”

and think of one monolithic group with the same customs, traditions and theology, but that is not the case. The Amish are a diverse collection of many churches of varying degrees of insularity. Yet, they are all Amish. There is not one church that is “more Amish” than another. Once again, thank you all for being such wonderful readers and keeping The Amish Cook going. You’ll hear from me from time to time. This column has been part of a personal journey and the journey continues. I’m happy you’re coming with me. And I thank Gloria and her husband Daniel for being such gifted stewards and caretakers of this column. I want to share with everyone the most popular Amish Cook recipe in my years as editor. New Order Amish conduct Sunday school and do mission work, such as building homes or schools in other countries. The Old Order Amish: The largest and best known of the Amish groups, this is a traditional horse-and-buggy church, but there are wide variations in use of technology. This church tends not to participate in mission activities and generally does not embrace Sunday school. The Swartentruber Amish: There are differences among the Swartzentrubers, with some being more conservative than others. But most Swartzentrubers resist displaying the orange safety triangle on their buggies.

Also, no motorized appliances of any kind. The Nebraska Amish: The most conservative of all Amish groups, men wear straw hats and no suspenders. Women do not wear bonnets, but instead, wear black kerchiefs. No motorized equipment at all and buggy tops are white, instead of traditional black. The Nebraska Amish, despite their name, are found in Pennsylvania in

One Amish bishop in Kansas called my list “very accurate,” but says his church is “just Amish.” The vast majority of New and Old Order Amish hold worship services in their homes. But some Old Order churches in Somerset County, Pennsylvania and in Unity, Maine, for instance, have formal church buildings. While the vast majority of Amish men don’t wear mustaches, in some Maine communities, mustaches are permitted. Most Old Order Mennonite men don’t wear beards, but in the small Mennonite community of Rich Hill, Missouri, beards are worn. So, among the Amish and Mennonites, the exception really is the rule.

Morrison singer-songwriter plans to release EP by end of September FINDING

But, Fischbach says he’s songs he really likes and is preparing to release a 4-song EP, “California State of Mind,” by the end of September. Fischbach is recording at Straightaway Productions, a studio right in his hometown. Singing is something Alex has been doing – at least in front of people – since he was in the sixth grade. “My mom actually forced me to do the school’s talent show,” Fischbach said. “I was really awkward on

stage, but people said I was good so it kind of just started from there.” That road took him to “American Idol.” Even though he didn’t advance as far as he would have liked, he has no regrets about the experience. “It gave me that taste that I needed and let me know that I need to work. I need to work hard so I can make this my dream.” A connection he made through “American Idol” helped Fischbach line up a trip to California to meet with record executives. “They [told me] since you don’t have any of your own stuff out right now, we just want to know who you are.

So, do that, and come back and see us.” Fischbach seems to have soaked in that advice, and surrounded himself with musicians and collaborators he respects. Travis Ray of Fulton, who Fischbach calls “a really great drummer,” has helped him with his percussion needs on the EP. Another friend, Simon Sosa, 21, of Sterling was hard at work producing Fiscbach’s song Thursday at the recording studio. Rounding out his crew was Joe Gibbs, who helps with Fiscbach’s photos and videos. A great support system has been key during his journey

MILLEDGEVILLE—The 63rd annual Carroll County Fair, which kicked off Sunday and runs through Saturday, has some new features this year, thanks to a lot of community support, said Liz Hutchison, Fair Board president. “We started this fair year debt-free, thanks to great support from the public the past few years,” Hutchison said. “State funding was cut over $30,000. But the business community responded very generously.” She cited Carroll County banks, which are funding Friday’s Dustin Lynch concert. “Every one of the banks gave a donation, and all of them exceeded the funds donated last year. In fact, they doubled their donations.” In addition, volunteers helped fund and build a new pavilion the Shannon vendor 3-Headed Monster BBQ. “Generous fair patrons helped

Dustin Lynch is ‘Where It’s At’ during fair Country rocker at grandstand on Friday night MILLEDGEVILLE — Country music singer Dustin Lynch, a national chart-topper out of Nashville, Tennessee, plays the Carroll County Fair grandstand at 8 p.m. Friday. He’ll perform favorites such as his hit, “Where It’s At,” from his second album of the same name, songs from his debut album “Cowboys and Angels,” and his follow-up single “She Cranks My Tractor,” which

became a number one video on GAC’s Top 20 Country Countdown. According to a news release, “Where It’s At,” debuted as the number one-selling digital country album in the U.S., earning more than 500,000 streams People are gravitating toward the single, with its upbeat lyric and insinuating groove “It just came to life when we were recording it,” Lynch said in a news release. “Musically it’s a new groove that we haven’t done before and it’s a sweet song. 4-H Federation has back-to-school service project

MILLEDGEVILLE — The Carroll County 4-H Federation is collecting school supplies and money through Monday to make

backpack bags for local schools. A collection bin will be in the 4-H exhibit building at the Carroll County Fair and 4-H Fair through Saturday. The Carroll County Farm

Bureau Young Leaders and Eastland Feed and Grain in Shannon teamed up in the spring to start the Carroll County Backpack Program, which provides “food insecure” children breakfast

and lunch for the weekend, Farm Bureau Director Chas Welch said. “Between the three school districts in the county, there are over 100 children in the grades K-6

that fall into this group.” They will continue to raise funds for the 2015-16 school year. “We are working on a fundraiser this fall to keep the program going and be able

to assist our children who need help,” Welch said. The bureau is at 811 S. Clay St. in Mount Carroll. Call 815-244-3001 to donate or for more information on the program.

CHADWICK – The village and a local youth group are leading nominees in a statewide contest to showcase innovative community involvement, breakthrough economic opportunity programs, and municipal out-of-the-box thinking. The Chadwick Super Troopers is the focus of the town’s entry, and as of 20 competitors vying for

the spotlight. The youth group was created in 2014 by Police Chief Ryan Lambert in an effort to reduce residential crime and promote a sense of community. The group completed many service projects, including yard cleanup, shoveling snow, painting park bathrooms, tidying up abandoned property, and trash collection throughout the community, according to the contest submission.
