BE A PRAIRIE ADVOCATE called “Knox’s Mill” for that structure of 1839 though begun in 1834 by an unhealthy fellow named Peters who soon sold out his spot on the Elkhorn. M a n y, m a n y diverse and sometimes unthinking demands had been made on the wooded regions known as Elkhorn, Buffalo and Chambers Groves. Farms and residences have become familiar hamlets here and there connected with them. Hitt, Fremont, Eagle Point, Buffalo Grove, Hazelhurst, Elkhorn are locally known though relatively short chapters in the Book of the Past. From Uncle Harry Smith’s clas-

to the thousand of featureless barrels, log cabins, regular homes, fuel for heating, plow beams, wooden utensils as implements, furniture and hundreds of other uses, Elkhorn Grove’s timbers declined in numbers. The long, narrow timber lots gave way to become part of private ownership. Those, however, were still up for sale. Perhaps at the turn-of-the century, 1900, or thereabouts a unique use put the timbers to use in Elkhorn Grove probably using Thorpe’s Mill at Hitt, it is suggested, to turn out matches. Once an uncommon (and fearsome) household help, replacing the lights box, betty lamp and so forth. The advent of the match company is listed in history of Milledgeville/ Elkhorn Grove but with no date. Apparently, it was after 1885 because part of the information states, “Two full carloads (of matches) leave here every day,” meaning railroad train cars at Hazelhurst on the CBN that arrived in the county in ‘85. A Joliet business directory dated 1906-’07 shows the “Illinois Match Co.” How long its tenure was other than those dates we have not discovered. Ramona Koning, Lanark, and Jan McKean, Wysox Township librarian, both searched for more inforamtion but came up with very little except Ramona’s receiving the two poignant pictures of the “Illinois Match Co.,” not the Joliet Match Co. as given in the local account printed below. Search “by the associates!” revealed the genealogical records of Will County, (Joliet), that president of the “Illinois Match Co.” was Fred Bennett, born in New York State in 1855, came to Joliet in 1875 after attending

Home Cooked Meals Like No Where Else

Hello folks, from beautiful, sunny Thomson, Illinois! This week I want to continue my thoughts on food, since food is such a big part of my life. There are two types of food eaters in this world, those who live to eat, and those who eat to live. Me, I live to eat. My wife eats to live. Food consumes my thoughts every day. I sometimes even dream about eating. I spend hours at the market picking out just the right food. Why do I do the shopping? I shop for the family because if I left it to my wife we would be eating salads, oatmeal, fresh veggies, mixed with (once in a while) 4 ounces of chicken breast. Those foods are what she survives on. Granted, she looks very healthy on the surface, but at what cost? How much pleasure is she missing out on? Food makes me happy. Shopping for food, cooking food, and especially eating food are some of my favorite passions. How do the two of us exist, you might ask? We have found a way. I shop and cook, but I actually cook two meals each day; one for the kids and one IRU KHU , WU\ WR ÂżQG JRRG GHDOV on skinless chicken breast, and
I grill 5 pounds at a time, with seasoning and just a little olive oil for her. Then I weigh it out and separate it into 4 ounce pieces and mix it with whole grain brown rice, green salad, or vegetable pasta. This is what goes in to her lunch for the better part of a week. I send her off to work every day with a combination of these foods, and she fends for herself at night. As far as me and the kids, it’s got to be fried food for breakfast, lunch and dinner. My doctor is really putting the crunch on me, especially since I told her that in an effort to feed the kids healthier meals, I ate the skin off 7 pieces of fried chicken a few months ago before serving up dinner. That was, by the way, one of my top 10 food memories of my life. I inherited my love of fried foods from my Grandma Marie in Arkansas. She was an amazing cook. My uncles and aunts are all healthy, probably because Grandma and Grandpa raised or grew everything they ate. Nothing went to waste on their farm. I asked her once “What do you do with garbage?� and she replied with “We never have garbage.� There were no packages, no empty milk jugs, and no store containers at all. Every scrap went to the pigs and chickens. One thing Grandma Marie did well was desserts. Her cinnamon-raisin rolls were so good, her chocolate gravy was to die for, and her cakes and pies drew neighbors from a 20 mile
radius as they sat cooling in the kitchen window. One day when I was young, my Dad and I were piloting the old houseboat down to the Quad Cities for a weekend of fun, music, and relaxation on the river, and Grandma Marie packed away a dozen of her famous cinnamon rolls for the trip. Dad and I got the last two UROOV DQG ¿QLVKHG WKHP RII quick. Just then the last piece RI UROO IHOO RQ WKH ÀRRU RI WKH houseboat right in front of us, I looked at Dad, he looked at me, and we both looked at the piece RI UROO RQ WKH ÀRRU $W WKH VDPH moment, we both dove to the ÀRRU ¿JKWLQJ IRU WKDW ODVW SLHFH of roll as the old houseboat drifted down the river with no pilot. No sir, you just don’t ¿QG FRRNV OLNH *UDQGPD 0DULH anymore. In the last 20 years I have been searching for a cook like Grandma Marie, and there is good news on that front. Among my new family at the Heirloom Market & CafÊ, is an awesome cook, Grandma Linda. She was raised cooking the same foods as my own Grandma, using whatever they had in the cupboards. She grew up feeding a lot of kids, and many times she had to get creative to get all those kids fed. Out of that experience, Grandma Linda became very good at making things from scratch. From soups to desserts, she starts with the basics. Nothing packaged, no chemicals or additives, just good old food‌the way I love it.

I had never eaten bread pudding, always thinking it would taste like soggy bread. I was very surprised when she brought out her creation. It was piping hot, so sweet, and the consistency was more like one of those cinnamon rolls my own grandma used to make. From that moment on, I hung around Grandma Linda as often as I could.
Grandma Linda is a quiet, unassuming woman who happens to run the kitchen here at the Heirloom CafĂŠ. She is humble, always handing the accolades of her work off to others, never taking the spotlight herself. But, make no mistake about it, she runs that kitchen. She has a hand in every meal that comes out of the kitchen at the Heirloom CafĂŠ. When I come around for a meal, I like to ask other customers where they came from and why they chose this little cafĂŠ in Thomson to eat. More times than not, they tell me “You just can’t get a homecooked meal like this anywhere
else.� They rave about Grandma Linda’s made-from-scratch soups, her breakfast specialty of biscuits and gravy, and they always leave with a pan of her cinnamon rolls or a big hunk of cake to go. Her soups are made in a huge pot, using fresh and hearty ingredients; some of them grown right here in our heirloom garden. This one pot of soup rarely makes it to the end of the day, then the soup of the day changes to a new pot of fresh and delicious home-made soup just like my own Grandma made. Grandma Linda also draws many customers looking for her made-from-scratch desserts. Funny thing is - their eyes often are bigger than their stomachs and after lunch or dinner at the cafÊ - there just isn’t enough room left for that big old serving of Grandma Linda’s home-made desserts. As I sat in the rocking chair on the porch in front of the Heirloom Market last Saturday, I lost count of how many customers left with a pan of her cinnamon rolls. Folks, if you are like me and you live to eat, you just have to stop by the Heirloom CafÊ for a home-cooked meal just like Grandma made. Capitol Report It’s been a busy few weeks here in Northwestern Illinois and consequently it’s been a while since my last column. I love attending all the summer activities our district has to offer. Here are a few of the things that have been keeping me busy: the weekend of June 20-21, the Union Dairy in Freeport and Kraft Foods in Stockton both celebrated 100 years of business. Both organizations are certainly notable to their communities, and Stockton’s Kraft was the first cheese plant of many that currently make up the now world-wide conglomerate. Gov. Quinn Signs Bill to Expand Access to Medical Marijuana in Illinois
SPRINGFIELD — Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn signed a bill into law Sunday that will expand access to the state’s medical marijuana program. According to the Governor’s Iris Martinez (D-Chicago), expands the qualifying conditions of the program to include seizure disorders, such as epilepsy and those associated with brain injuries. Illinois is now one of 23 states with workable medical marijuana programs that allow the use of medical marijuana in the treatment of seizure disorders. “We applaud Gov. Quinn and the legislature for adopting this compassionate and much-needed legislation,” said Chris Lindsey, a legislative analyst for the Marijuana Policy Project. “It comes as a relief to countless patients and their families, many of whom tirelessly advocated for the new law. It will improve the quality of life for many Illinois residents.” SB 2636 will also allow the health department to develop rules so that minors may participate in the Illinois Medical Cannabis Pilot Program if they receive parental consent in addition to recommendations from their physicians. Illinois was one of three states with workable medical marijuana programs that prohibit minors from participating. “Medical marijuana is an effective treatment option for people suffering from seizure disorders,” Lindsey said. “As more elected adopt laws that allow it.”

Fair on Thursday night August 7 from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. in front of the grandstand. Check-in will be on the stage at 4:00 p.m. Teams will play a maximum of 6 zany games each. Games may be wet and messy, so participants are encouraged to dress for a mess! Each game will be a timed event. The top three teams in each age division will be awarded a prize. Age divisions are 8-11 yr olds; 12-14 yr olds; 15-19 yr olds and 20 yr olds & up. Each team is made up of four individuals. The age of the oldest team member determines the team’s age division.

division. Another tractor drive is in the books. We were fortunate enough to have over 80 tractors register with 79 hitting the road. I never would have guessed 8 years ago when we started this, how big of a hit it would be. We have a great group of followers from Iowa who have continued to join us each year. A special thanks goes out to Ken Sandy for leading our pack. I get compliments every year for our focus on safety. It is something I always worry about. Also thank you to Marion Zemke for following the pack as it is an important part of our safety. I also need to thank my directors who helped me throughout the day. Brad Smith, Denny Morhardt, Allen Derrer, and Larry Alexander were there every step of the way to make sure the day ran smoothly. We could not hold the event also without the help of the Genesee Township garage for letting us stop there for break. We greatly appreciate Dewey letting us invade them. Mount Carroll plans Golf Outing as a fundraiser for the City Pool LYNNETTE FORTH For The Prairie Advocate News MOUNT CARROLL — During a regular meeting of the Mount Carroll City Council on July 22nd, aldermen continued with the new schedule of conducting earlier committee meetings. Alderman Joe Grimm reported that the new pool reel and cover are in use, and that one of the lifeguards taken off of the schedule until her A golf outing is being planned as a fundraiser for the pool, and is scheduled for August 22nd at Oakville. Grimm advised that a “free swim” day is in the works, if enough lifeguards are available after school starts. Pet Smart provided a grant to Heartland Pet Welfare for a feral cat trap and treat and release program. The City of Savanna has been doing this since 2012. Sue Gerlach provided information about how the program has been working. Committee members decided to come up with an applica-
tion process so the city can regulate the specific colonies instead of having some undocumented colonies that are not getting treated and maintained. Alderman Grimm and Sue Gerlach will review the proposed regulations and will provide an update at the August 26th meeting. Water and Sewer committee members learned from Alderman Doug Bergren that he had spoken with Maintenance Superintendent Rusty Handel, and learned that the grinder has not arrived, and also discussed the pool reel and cover. Alderman Grimm submitted a copy of an anonymous donation to be used for the cover. Police Chief Cass provided his monthly report, which included the total cost of a new squad car at $33,925.60. Applications have been received for the full time police for August 4th at 5:00 pm. and approved current bills, and recommended approving an inter-fund transfer of $34,000 from the park fund to the sewer fund, and $25,000 from the cemetery fund to the sewer fund. A recommendation to approve the motor fuel transfer of $59,000 from the sewer fund to the bond and interest sinking fund to pay back the loan and use for the IEPA loan payment was made. Another recommendation was made to approve an inter-fund transfer of $10,000 from the cemetery fund to the water fund as a loan to cover expenses for the month. The transfers were approved. Members discussed a proposed water and sewer rate increase, noting that an increase
amount will need to be placed in an ordinance. A recommendation to pay for the police squad car was submitted, with $8,400 coming from TIF funds, and the remainder from the general fund, which would equal $25,525.60, which includes equipment and installation. Committee members discussed for an update to the code book at a cost of $4,000. Members recommended giving $100.00 to TimberLake Playhouse. Alderman Mike Risko reported that he had been contacted by Bob Law about his donating a portion of property adjoining the east side of the cemetery to the city. A survey would be needed, as well as approval from the City Attorney. Bergren reported on the recent Historic Preservation Advisory Committee, noting that a sign in front of a property located on College had been removed by the owner. Alderman Bob Sisler voiced concern, with Bergren stating “If someone doesn’t want a sign in front of their house, we can’t just put it there.” City Attorney Coplan stated, “The sign belongs to the city, I am assuming they gave it back?” Bergren replied, “Rather than creating a municipal mess, we just took it down.” In new business, aldermen learned that the grant for the sewer lining of the collection system has been submitted. Nick Wagner with MSA Professional Services advised the time line of work to be done, with the estimate for work being $128,000. The date to open bids is August 12th at 3:30.

Savanna City Council moves ahead with Infrastructure Projects MICHAEL MILLER For Prairie Advocate News SAVANNA — Sewer plant progress, as well as updates on street repairs and other vital ongoing infrastructure projects were the main discussion points at the July 22nd, 2014 meeting of the Savanna City Council at 333 Chicago Avenue in Savanna. This meeting was attended by all Council members, including Jeff Griswold, Bill Robinson, Peg Haffey, Bill Sweeney, Ray Skiles, Lisa Robinson, Christine Lee and Gary Scott Law. Also attending were Mayor Tony McCombie, City Clerk Paul Hartman, City Attorney Phil Jensen, and department heads John Lindeman, Michael Moon, and Shawn Picolotti, with Sheryl Sipe absent. Microsurfacing Robinson opened with a Water/ Sewer/Refuse/Streets and Alleys Committee Report. He said that Public Works Superintendent Lindeman had been directed to compose a list of streets that would require the “microsurfacing� process which will maintain the condition of previously renovated streets. This process, Robinson, said mixes seal coating with a type of steel slag to make the surface hard and protects the existing roads. Lindeman said his current estimates would put the cost of this work between $90,000 and $100,000. Robinson said that the streets in question would be Diagonal, Longmoor, and Van. Lindeman said that with the budget scheduling, the budget

By this time, he said, it’s almost impossible to get much work done unless you have a plan in place already and you are ready to go out for bids on the work. Lee said it might be a good idea to keep this type of plan in place in future years. Robinson also reported a problem at the Transfer Station, namely that some of the local commercial businesses are “dumping huge quantities of tires� at the station, which created a rebuke from the EPA. He said Lindeman has been directed to stipulate no commercial use of this station for tire disposal, and that the business in question would have to engage a commercial entity in the area that handles this type of disposal. He also reported that the outside water faucets and rest rooms at Marquette Park were not being charged for water usage and action has been initiated whereby a meter will be installed and the Park Board will be charged for this usage. Lee asked whether or not there could be a printed plan that the public -

He noted that a digital mapping process for the city’s water system is in the works, which would be able to detail where water shut offs, hydrants, manholes, and other important locations are without the need for physical investigations. Robinson said this will be an invaluable service to the City as it will save much time and effort in locating these areas. The data will need to be input and this will take some time to accomplish. The rest of the project list with Lindeman’s comments was as follows: Bowen Street Water Main Project: Lindeman said a CDAP grant application has been submitted for this, with bids more than likely going out in the next three months. If the grant is obtained, work should commence next spring. The current eight inch pipe will be replaced with a 12 inch pipe, which should facilitate much better water service for residents on the east side of town.

This is still in design phase and the City is awaiting to see if they will receive funding for it. Wacker Road Planning Project: Will be in conjunction with the above plan. Street Repair Program: Was discussed in the early portion of the meeting. Sidewalk Repair Program: Hopefully will occur this year. House Demolition: MSA is now aiding the City in preparing contractor requirements for the work in this project. Intersection Solicitor’s Licenses Approved Three separate licenses for solicitation at the Intersection of Rte 84 and 64 (the four way out by McDonald’s), were read and approved. The Muscular Dystrophy Association will be holding a fund drive at that location on August 23rd, from 8 AM to 1 PM. The Savanna VFW will holding their own drive on August 29th and 30th from 8 AM to 4 PM. The Savanna Fireman’s Association will be occupying this area for their annual boot drive on July 25th and July 26th from 8 AM to 2 PM, and all of these applications were approved by Council. Other Business Council approved an agreement with MSA Professional Services for replacement design and permitting work on the Chicago Avenue sidewalks. He also informed Lindeman of a possible sinkhole forming between 3rd and Murray Street near a sewer grate. Lindeman said he has been making the meter project a “high priority,� and given the large amount of projects tasked to the City it wasn’t possible to do everything at once. He asked for patience from the citizenry while he negotiated the ongoing work with limited manpower. Moon thanked the State’s Attorney and his assistant for handling all of Savanna’s ordinance tickets at no charge. McCombie said she’d been contacted both as a mayor and a realtor about the potential of a medical marijuana facility in town. She said on the realty side, someone has expressed interest in constructing an 8,000 square foot building, and this entity has also looked at the former Army Depot for such a spot. She told the entity that she could not speak for the city nor the council as to their opinion on this matter.

Village of Milledgeville gets sticker shock from sidewalk replacement bids May consider Village recycling proposal Based on unapproved minutes By Christine A. Ottens, Village Clerk MILLEDGEVILLE — A regular meeting of the Village Board of Trustees was called to order at 7:30 pm at the Village Hall in Milledgeville on July 21, 2014. In attendance were Trustees Bill Stage, Gary Geirnaeirt, Gene Behrens, Stan Eads, John Helms and Wayne Sprecher; Village President Galen Wirth; Tami Schryver, Becky Kent, Dan Pepin, Mike Leslie, Greg Miller and Jim Haag. The minutes from the July 7, 2014 meeting were approved, as was paying all current bills as listed and the Treasurer’s Report as presented. Business from the Floor Tami Schryver and Becky Kent were present to ask the Trustees why the Village doesn’t recycle. Wirth said the Trustees talked about it once and it was going to cost the residents $2.00 more per water bill and the Trustees said it wasn’t worth it. Carroll County Transit can get us to friends or restaurants for a meal or get us to the grocery store to do our food shopping, (because of limited space on our vehicles there is can help our minds, knowledge, and potential grow by providing rides to area colleges, libraries, and other kinds of learning opportunities. In order to remain a living thing, we need to feel what is good in ourselves and then do things to promote it. We also need to feel what is not so good in us and do things to change it. Now Carroll County Transit can’t tell you what you feel but we can help you respond to those feelings and make your life a little nicer. If you’re bored, we can help hook you up with friends, social events, learning opportunities, and other adventures in Carroll County. If you’re not feeling well,
Carroll County Transit can help get you to Doctor’s appointments, pharmacies, and other kinds of healthcare services. If you’re stressed with day to day responsibilities, commitments, and obligations CCT can help you run errands, shop, and take care of business to keep you own personal ship sailing on smooth waters. Now we can’t do all these wonderful things by ourselves. It takes team work. CCT staff and riders must work together to help our local transportation system deliver smooth, dependable service. To make our
ride reservations as early as possible (3 days is OK but 3 weeks is not too made at least one day before the ride stand that no additions to tomorrow’s route schedules can be made after 11:00 am today. We hope this article has helped clarify how CCT can contribute to the quality of life here in in Carroll County. And please rest assured, just because we celebrate our connections with all living things, We try to discourage cattle, mosquitoes, and snakes from riding our vans.
Board Members Needed The Carroll County Senior Services Organization Board is in need of two volunteers. We need one from Milledgeville and one from any other town in Carroll County to be members of our 15-member Board of Directors, which represents all communities within
Carroll County. Board meetings are held in the morning on the third Tuesday each month. If you are interested, please contact the Senior Center at 815-2441800 and leave your name and number. One of our current Board members will contact you.
Exercise Equipment at Senior Center We now have a rowing machine in addition to our treadmill and recumbent bike. You are able to use our professional-grade treadmill, rowing machine and recumbent bicycle anytime the Senior Center is open, Monday – Friday, 8:00 am

Letter titled ‘Medicare Information Update’ Recently, an Illinois resident received a letter titled “Medicare Information Update” that asked for his and his spouse’s date of birth and phone number. The letter stated that “As of January 1st, Medicare has made changes that affect you and your health care expenses… mean[ing] that you must pay even more towards your own health care.” The recipient of this letter did not respond because he knew that Medicare already has his information this way. This letter is a type of marketing tool, known as a lead generator, which collects people’s names, phone numbers, and other information for a salesperson to follow up on. These lead generators often contain a notice in smaller print that this agency or Medicare. This letter also had small print that said a representative may call. If you choose to return
these cards, you will likely receive calls trying to sell you something. The product being sold in this lead generator is Medicare Supplement Insurance or Medigap. Medigap is a private insurance plan that you can buy to help cover Medicare premiums, deductibles, and coinsurance costs. An insurance agent might call if you return this letter. The letter is accurate in saying that Medicare costs changed on January 1st, but the change that happened
is just a cost of living adjustment to monthly premiums that happens every year and is a normal part of Medicare. There is free, unbiased information available about Medigap plans from the Illinois Department on Aging’s Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP). Carroll County 4-H Clothing Judging Thursday, July 31, at 6:30 p.m. will be the Carroll County 4-H Clothing Judging and Style Show for all county 4-H’ers enrolled in Clothing, Knitting, & Crocheting projects. The event will be held at the 4-H exhibit building at the Carroll County Fairgrounds. 4-H’ers with projects to be judged, need to have their projects checked in 6:00-6:15 p.m. Following judging, there will

By Gloria Yoder “Perfect� describes the summer weather we’re having. Last night we had a nice rain that cut the humidity and cooled everything and everyone off once more. My 16-year-old sister, Mary Grace, who lives next door is here helping me for the day. We are doing cleaning in preparation for Daniel’s family from Danville, Ohio who plan to come for a visit this weekend. We’re excited to see them again. We also did some cooking today. With mashed potatoes being one of Daniel’s favorite hot dishes, we made a huge batch. Then divided it into small containers to be frozen. It’s very handy to thaw and heat at a moment’s notice. Our 2 1/2 year-old daughter Julia is in her glory. Mary Grace helped her bake caramel apple cupcakes and now they’re working on her favorite part which is, of course, putting sprinkles on top of the frosting. On Monday morning after doing the laundry I checked the sweet corn and found it to be golden yellow, ready for harvest. Obviously the coon had discovered the same thing the night before but it fortunately hadn’t done a lot of damage yet. Have you ever heard of husking
