LANARK — Despite a rain-soaked June, the 3,300-square-foot Casey’s General Store, at the northwest corner of state Routes 64 and 73, is on track. “The goal was to be open by mid-October,” said Jordan Way, project manager
with Septagon Construction of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. “We’ll be OK, just maybe a week or two behind.” Subcontractor Fischer Excavating of Freeport started removing 300 loads of topsoil June 2. A retaining wall has been built on the north side of the site that will wrap around the building, which is expected to be up and stand-
ing by Friday, he said. Jim Dennis owns Dennis Concrete in Streator. His crews poured the foundation on July 22, and should now, he said. “The last thing we do on site will be pouring the driveway, not for another month or so,” Dennis said. The biggest delay has been lowering utility lines that

FREEPORT — Tim Hood, appointed president and CEO of Highland Community College in June, is off to a good start at the Freeport-based college, in spite of the many challenges faced by higher education institutions statewide. In January, Hood was tapped to be Highland’s eighth president upon the retirement of President and CEO Joe M. Kanosky. Hood was executive vice president, overseeing dayto-day operations of the college, since August. Prior to that, he was Highland’s vice president of academic services since January 2011 and has been instrumental in leading the development of new programs and dual credit opportunities with high schools throughout the district. “A lot of things are coming together nicely,” Hood said. “There are always challenges, but we have a team ready to do great things for the region.” One of the biggest challenges facing the new president is an old issue: adequate state funding. And the budget dilemma in

So, the Tim Hood college is going to position itself to be able to deal with more reductions. “It’s hard to count on things that one would have thought were fairly stable, like legislation that seemed protected from deterioration,” Hood said. “In recent years, it’s hard to count on funding formulas that have been in place for decades – not just for community colleges, but for the universities, K to 12, preschools and just about every state educational system. They are all jeopardized.” Hood acknowledged that there are many good people involved in state govern-
this funding dilemma, and he is not yet prepared to give up on them. “But I also think that citizens – the voters – take note of what’s going on, and which legislators support education, because one of many bottom lines is that education is probably the single greatest investment that we can make as a state,” Hood said. “So many of the cures to our ills are rooted in a better trained workforce and a better educated public. “If we compromise that, we are setting ourselves up for harder times in the future. “On the bright side, we are committed to a new strategic planning process that will continue generating support, partnerships and revenues that are not connected to state funding. We are actively pursuing other ways to support the work that we do and the ser-
vices that we provide to our students, so that we are not as reliant on state funding as much as we have been in the past.” This new process means the college is reaching out more to the private sector, and some of Highland’s new programs have direct connections with area companies. “We appreciate the opportunities to share resources, and to provide them with a pipeline of well-trained and well-educated employees,” Hood said. “They have a vested interest in that, and we are, in as many ways as possible, working more closely with these businesses.” New programs to be introduced this fall at Highland include mass communication, hospitality management, and criminal justice.

The Savanna Save the Pool Scholarship Committee would like to thank Triumph Community Bank and Jo-Carroll Energy for their recent donations to our program. Sesquicentennial festival a mega success By MICHAEL MILLER For Prairie Advocate THOMSON — The torrential rains Sunday prompted the early closure of the carnival, but did little to dampen the spirits of community members who turned out en masse for the 3-day Thomson Sesquicentennial Mega Festival. “The celebration was fantastic,” said Lawrence Bruckner, a member of the festival organizing committee. “It was great to to have the community get out and support this birthday celebration. We had 69 entries for the parade, and perfect weather Friday and Saturday.” The carnival was “fabulous,” the beer tent went well, and 10 teams participated in the softball tournaments, he said, adding that several former “melon tossers” were back to be honored. Savanna Mayor Tony McCombie said she and three other mayors attended to support Thomson, Carroll County and regional economic development. “None of us can do it by ourselves anymore,” she said. “We’re all here together.” Sunday may have been slow, but “Saturday was a huge success,” Thomson Village President Vicki Trager said. “I think overall the Mega Festival has exceeded our expectations and I think the expectations of most people. We just couldn’t be more pleased with the carnival and the cleanliness of it and the professionalism and the courtesy they’ve extended to us.” About 800 people passed through the beer tent, Trager said. “The Sesquicentennial committee has just done amazing things. There was entertainment in the big tent, one thing after another.

LANARK — The old sign had to come down in Exchange State Bank’s reconstruction and face lift in the spring. It made sense to overhaul it before reinstalling it, “but when we priced a new one, and compared the cost of refurbishing an old sign with a new one with a longer warranty and better shelf life, we went with the new one,” President John Nelson said. “Plus, we always heard from people that the old sign’s temperature reading was never right, compared with their car thermometer, so I assume it may be the same with the new sign.” The new sign, from

CHADWICK — Betty L. Law-Gieson, 90, formerly of Chadwick, died Friday, July 24, 2015, at Bria Nursing Home in Geneva. Betty was born June 5, 1925, in Mount Carroll, the daughter of Lee and Minnie (Neveln) Law. She attended Mount Carroll Community High School and graduated with the Class of 1943. On January 1, 1944, Betty married Walter Gieson. They celebrated 63 years of marriage before Walter’s death on Jan. 24, 2007. Betty is survived by a nephew, Rick Law of Geneva; and a niece, KristiAnn (Law) Okoye of Naperville. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Walter; a son, Randy; her parents, Lee and Minnie; and a brother, Richard Law. A funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 1, at Evangelical Free Church in Chadwick. There will be a visitation from 10 to 11 a.m., prior to the service at the church. Bruce Rauner and Republican lawmakers are seeking a constitutional 12-month budget anchored on solid governmental and business reforms to improve the state’s economy, freeze property taxes, and implement term limits and take “politics” out of the process of drawing legislative boundaries. Democrat leaders in the Senate and House of Rep-

The Illinois Constitution requires the General Assembly to pass a balanced 12-month budget. In May, Democrat leaders pushed through a plan based on expected revenues of $32 billion and proposed spending of $36 billion. That budget has been vetoed by Rauner, but Democrat lawmakers voted to override several of his vetoes, further complicating budget negotiations. LANARK — Two neighboring businesses opened their doors to Lanark Chamber of Commerce members and guests at Business After Hours on July 21. Forster Products coowners Bob Ruch and Rod Hartman and End Of the Road Antiques and Gifts owner Randy Welp gave tours of their East Lanark Avenue businesses. Forster Products has a long Lanark history. The Forster brothers, who were designing model airplane engines in a basement, founded the company in 1935.

The Tennessee musician will perform favorites such as his hit, “Where It’s At,” from his second album of the same name, songs from his debut album “Cowboys and Angels,” and his followup single “She Cranks My Tractor,” which became a number one video on GAC’s Top 20 Country Countdown. Carroll County Fair grandstand events and daily attractions MILLEDGEVILLE — Chainsaw Sculptor Jim Barnes, Williamston Woodcarving Studio, Williamston, Michigan, will lead the way every day as he creates chainsaw sculptures that will be auctioned Saturday evening at the Carroll County Fair Aug. 4 to 8. Times for his sculpting demonstrations and the auction will be posted at the fairgrounds. At 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug.4, see the Illini State Truck Pull, free at the
grandstand. The event will feature the new 2Hot2Farm Tractor Class. Pit passes will be available on the evening of the event only. Starting things off at 6 p.m. Wednesday is the Tractor Parade, followed by the Badger State Tractor Pull at 7 p.m. These events are free at the grandstand, and pit passes will be available all day Wednesday. Another free event, the Tri County Pullers Mini Rods, will also be held at the grandstand at 7 p.m. Thursday. Dustin Lynch live in
concert is the featured act, starting at 8 p.m. on Friday. Reserved grandstand seats are $10, with track seating tickets at $20. Bring your own chairs! Saturday, Aug. 8 is full of fun on the fairgrounds. From 1 to 5 p.m. is the Bags Tournament. Teams are asked to check-in at noon. Limit of 32 teams of two participants, ages 15 and up, with a $20 per team entry fee. Recycling Senior Service earns money each year through the efforts of those who gather newspapers and aluminum cans in their communities, and those who bundle the paper and haul it to the local distribution centers. We need more help with this project. The “gathering” people work just a couple of hours a month in their communities. The “bundlers” work at the Senior Center just about any day when they have an hour or two to spare. And the “loaders/haulers” help load and/or haul the papers to the distribution center. Senior Center Gift Shop The Gift Shop at the Senior Center has unique gifts handmade by volunteers working throughout Carroll County. It is open from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Seniors Around the County Great River Outreach The Great River Outreach offers a delicious meal, friendship, and good conversation at two locations. In Savanna, food is served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, at the former Chestnut Park School near Poopy’s, south of town on state Route 84. In Mount Carroll, food is served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Carroll United Methodist Church. Any age is welcome. Donations are accepted cooks for both locations and food is brought to Mount Carroll. Volunteers are involved in this endeavor. Why eat alone? Consider joining the group often! Are you turning 65? Defensive driving class MOUNT CARROLL – An AARP Defensive Driving class will be held from 8 a.m. to noon Aug. 26 and 28 at the Carroll County Senior Center, 306 N. Main St. The 8-hour course, instructed by Arlyn Thomson, teaches senior drivers and safer as the effects of aging causes changes to longtime habits. Carroll County Senior Center recycles old or broken cellphones by sending them to a company that refurbishes them for emergency 911 phones in areas devastated by disasters and for sale to low-income people. There is a donation box at the Senior Center. If the program goes well, more boxes
will be placed in other areas around the county. Cellphones can be dropped off at the center from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. with hot food. Cooking for a crowd is something I really enjoy. Finally, we settled upon the less expensive route, which required a bit more work. I decided to make potluck rice casseroles. It is similar to potluck potatoes, only I use rice instead of shredded potatoes. It really made it much easier for me, especially with having little ones to care for as well. How about giving it a try? By GLORIA YODER It’s Monday morning. All is peacefully quiet around here. My husband, Daniel, went to work at 5:45 a.m. and the children, Austin and Julia, are sound asleep. I decided to grab a pen in an attempt to put these quiet moments to good use. It looks like a busy day ahead. I have some lastminute odds and ends to tackle before our trip to Ohio tomorrow evening. We look forward to spending several days with Daniel’s family in Knox County, then traveling on to the large Amish community near Holmes County, where one of my cousins plans to get married on Friday. In spite of my lengthy to-do list for the day, I do feel quite relieved this ished our turn with hosting church. Since we don’t have adequate space in our home to hold the 120 people who usually come to church, we took our turn at the school house. During summer vacation, those of us who can’t practically have church in our homes take turns cleaning the school house and getting it ready for services. We debated whether we wanted to serve a traditional Amish after-church meal of peanut butter or cheese sandwiches, or a full-course meal. In our community it is done either way. Sandwiches looked so easy to prepare, yet I enjoy planning and preparing menus
and tasty. The salad I chose to make was similar to what my parents had at their wedding. We layered coleslaw on the bottom and topped it with tossed salad. It looked very attractive on the large trays that I had borrowed from Mom. Dessert consisted of chocolate fudge cake, pumpkin crunch, dump cake, and ice cream. Coffee and tea were served as well. Thanks to Mom for making the coffee. I’m not a coffee drinker, so I also shrink from the thought of making coffee
cream of mushroom soup, I actually prefer making my own soup or gravy. For church, I used a large batch of the wedding gravy that I wrote about a few weeks ago. I used that instead of cream of mushroom soup, but if you are pressed for time, you can use cream of mushroom soup.

The Amish school becomes a place of worship during the summer. for those who know exactly how it’s supposed to taste. Others also offered to help by preparing food, which was a blessing. Last night we had supper for the youth and several other families. After supper, anyone was welcome to join in the hymn singing, consisting of a half hour of German singing followed
in our hearts, these things are all empty. If we have the love of God within us, it will radiate into the hearts and lives of those around us. It is a daily challenge for me to walk in this love and share it unconditionally with those around me. I will share the recipe that we made for our after-church meal. For the
