Well folks, for the 3rd year in a row the mighty Mississippi River has kept XV RII LWV FKDQQHO DQG ÀRRGHG its backwaters, with record ÀRRG OHYHOV VWLOO WR FRPH showing us how, no matter how we try to harness it for recreational and commercial use, this river still will do what it wants. As I look out IURP WKH ÀRRGHG ERDW GRFN ¿VKLQJ SROHV DQG ERDW LQ tow, I am reminded of my ¿UVW PHPRULHV RI D ULYHU having its way.

In 1965 I lived in the middle of town with my parents and siblings, a mile from the river. I was just a child, but the vision of water in our back yard, in our EDVHPHQW DQG ÀRRGLQJ RXU street stays with me today.

When this river went over its banks, our downtown ÂżOOHG XS ZLWKLQ KRXUV OLNH pouring water into a bowl.

I remember boats running up and down 15th avenue, picking us up and carrying us to the north end of Fulton where we would live with friends for 3 weeks. Aqua “Ducks� took us daily to

higher ground for groceries and such, and as I looked over the high walls of the boat, our little town looked completely devastated.

Local chain manufacturer Drives Incorporated, ÀRRGHG ZDLVW GHHS ZLWK machinery ruined, putting several hundred people out of work. But this company didn’t sit on its heels, in fact building a prototype sandbag machine. This machine, looking like a huge shotgun shell re-loader, automated the laborious work that was previously done by hand‌ one bag at a time. Eventually the water receded, and shortly after that a dike was built to protect residents in the lower end of town.

Still in my mind is the way this little town came together. Men worked day and night to protect this town, while women cared for displaced families and fed the workers. Maybe that is why I have always had an urge to help others, as it was instilled in me from such an early age. Even in the early 1970s as water crept into ditches and boiled over in culverts along highway WU\LQJ WR ÂżOO RXU WRZQ again from the opposite side of town, I remember being

part of a sandbag brigade, tossing bag upon bag from one person to the next, with many other citizens.

This town became a huge family in times of trouble, each person protecting their neighbors’ homes and farms and stores.

Funny to me is, with all this talk about our society turning into loners, I still see everyone come out to help their neighbors when this ol’ Mississippi decides to come out of its banks. As much as we want to think our society is changing for the worse, ZH VWLOO KDYH FRPSDVVLRQ we still are there to help our neighbors in time of need. I have seen personally the kind acts of people in our community. I have witnessed locals spending their own time and money helping our citizens who have fallen on unfortunate times - no questions asked out of the goodness of their own hearts.

7KLV JLYHV PH KRSH seeing our community come together in tough times. And even when this old river decides to wreak havoc on us we still choose to live along its banks, for the good things far outweigh the bad with the mighty Mississippi River.

July 12th is a date to mark on your calendars, as the Heirloom Market & CafĂŠ invites Larry Michael Bettcher, the “Mississippi Manâ€? to the stage from 5-8pm. Larry has recorded in Nashville, played on many riverboats, and has had songs in movies and on national radio. He has taken the stage with country greats Moe Bandy, Ronnie McDowell, and many more.

Lately, the “Mississippi Manâ€? is touring Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin with a gal named Debra Kay, and he MXVW ÂżQLVKHG DQRWKHU DOEXP called “Wild and Restless.â€?

We are very fortunate to get Larry on stage in Thomson at the Heirloom CafĂŠ, from 5-8pm this Saturday.

Our Heirloom Farmers’ Market has been growing each week, and has become a one-of-a-kind event, with many vendors showing off their original art. From barn quilts to jewelry in candles, from cucumbers to radishes, \RX ZLOO ¿QG LW KHUH IURP 9am-1pm every Saturday

at the Heirloom Farmers’ Market, right along Highway 84, the Great River Road. We even have live music most Saturdays, showcasing many up and coming musicians just itching to get their original and cover songs out to the public.

Folks, we have a great outdoor concert coming up July 26th, as Forrest Carter Rische and his band “The Cowboy and the Lady and The Montrose Trail Band� will be playing outside at the Heirloom Market & Cafe’s Saturday Night Shindig from 5-8pm, and they will also be our musical guest on the Old Time Heirloom Hour that day. Led by Nashville and Branson entertainer Forrest Carter Rische and banjo great Paul Pack, this band is headed for the big-time!

Forrest comes from a big family with great musical talent, even playing shows in Branson and Nashville.

They are soon headed back down to Nashville, but before they head south, we talked them into playing an outdoor concert in Thomson at the Heirloom Market & CafÊ on Saturday, July 26th from 5-8pm! Don’t miss this one, folks!

Illinois Farmers Markets Now Regulated for Consumers Protection TOM KOCAL TKocal@prairieadvocate.com of Summer, Gov. Pat Quinn signed legislation Saturday, June 21, 2014 to standardize the regulation of farmers markets in an effort to boost protections for consumers and encourage residents to shop locally. “This new law will encourage people across Illinois to get out and buy local,� Quinn said in a statement. “Farmers markets offer uniquely local goods and we need to ensure they are safe for all Illinois shoppers.

Establishing statewide standards for farmers markets will help vendors and consumers know what to expect no matter where they sell or buy produce in the state.�

Under the measure, House Bill 5657, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) is tasked with creating rules and regulations involving food sampling and testing at farmers markets in the state.

Sponsored by State Representative Michael Tryon (R-Crystal Lake) and State Senator David Koehler (D-Peoria), HB 5657 directs the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) to set rules and regulations regarding food sampling and testing at farmers’ markets throughout Illinois. This will lead to easier navigation of farmers’ markets by consumers and increased compliance among vendors.

The bill requires vendors to inform consumers of the origin of specialty crops or raw agricultural products and limits the fee local health departments can charge for monitoring farmers markets to $25.

The legislation is effective immediately. “Prior to the signing of this bill, Illinois’ 102 counties had 100 different health departments setting the rules and regulations for farmers

markets,� said Tryon. “Full compliance by vendors who sold their fruits and vegetables at multiple markets was nearly impossible due to the lack of uniformity within the rules. Not only will this new law standardize regulations statewide, but by making compliance easier for vendors, the public should have increased access to these healthy foods.� gap and provide fresh foods in areas considered food deserts, where fruits and vegetables are not readily available,� added IDPH Director LaMar Hasbrouck. “But we want to make sure foods sold at farmers markets are safe and don’t cause illness from accidental bacterial contamination, like salmonella. Illinois ranks third in the nation for number of farmers’ markets, with more than 375 known markets in 2013. Only California and New York have more. “Farmers markets are such an important link between the people who truly grow our food and the consumers,� Senator Koehler, who chairs the Senate Agriculture Committee, said. “Creating a single, statewide standard will make it easier for more farmers to participate in more markets.�

Reeder Report Pam Harris’ victory is a victory for all Illinoisans Pam Harris is just a Lake County mom looking after her disabled adult son. She’s not a particularly political person.

But on Monday (June 30, 2014), she shook the very foundations of labor law in the United States when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in her favor.

Her case speaks volumes about the power of an ordinary person to make a difference in our society.

In a state as cynical as Illinois, it’s easy to pooh poo folks like Harris. After all, how much of a difference can one person really make when taking on the political establishment?

Well, in Harris’ case, quite a lot.

At issue was whether she should be forced to join a union.

Rather than place her son, Josh, in an institution, she entered a program where she receives state assistance to care for him at home.

But one Sunday morning, an organizer for Service Employees International Union knocked on her door and asked her to vote to join a union.

At first she was perplexed. She’s not a state worker. She’s just a mom, doing what moms do: caring for her child. And SEIU is one of the largest, politically powerful labor organizations in the nation.

But if a majority of home care workers voted to join the union, she would have to give money to the union – whether she wanted to belong or not.

Harris stood up to the union and helped defeat it in a vote.

But she knew that wasn’t the end of the story. The union could just keep coming back and calling for more votes. And Pam Harris didn’t think she should have to give money to some union boss in order to care for her son.

So Harris sued the state, which had helped facilitate the union’s organizing attempts. The case ended up being called Harris vs. Quinn.

But it might be more aptly labeled David vs. Goliath.

After all, what hope does an ordinary person have in standing up to an entire state government and one of the nation’s most powerful unions?

I found the case intriguing, so I decided to travel to Washington to hear it argued and I hoped to

interview Harris on the steps of the Supreme Court.

I heard her attorney in the courthouse ask the Supreme Court justices to rule that workers such as Harris not be forced to pay union dues or “representation fees� to unions. After all, why should someone be forced to give money to a union to advocate for something they don’t believe?

SEIU — and other government unions — could see the danger of losing a lawsuit like this and did everything they could to win.

They were on the steps of the court being interviewed by a gaggle of reporters. But Harris was nowhere to be found.

It surprised me. After all, its not every day one has a case argued before the Supreme Court.

But Pam stayed home. She was back in Lake County looking after her son.

The case wasn’t about personal acclaim, for her. It was about her and others in her situation doing what’s best for their children.

And on Monday, she showed how much of a difference one person can make.

Sterling Main Street Music Fest Returns to Grandon Civic Center On Saturday, July 26, 2014 Central Memorial Park and the Grandon Civic Center will once again become the home for Sterling Main Street Music Fest, presented by Midland States Bank. This all- ages festival will be the “can’t miss” event of the summer, and features 4 great bands with Sauk Valley roots!

Opening this year’s festival will be Charlie Siren, a 4 piece pop punk band based out of Minneapolis, MN. Paeton Gillette, a 2009 Newman graduate is the band’s drummer. The Dangers of Free Wi-Fi: Use Caution You should be able to sit back and relax and not worry about your identity being stolen. Unfortunately, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) has received reports of scammers trying to collect personal information by creating unsecured Wi-Fi zones near hotels, which guests can connect to for free.

“Checking emails and going on social media are common things to do on vacations,” says Dennis Horton, director of the Rockford Office of the Better Business

Bureau. “However, if you connect to an unsecure Wi-Fi connection, one that is not encrypted, you are letting the owner of the connection see all of your personal information. This could include banking information, addresses, personal information and other Internet browsing activity.”

The BBB offers the following advice for vacationers looking to connect to Wi-Fi zones: Use extreme caution when connecting to Wi-Fi on vacation.

Connecting to free Wi-Fi zones

can endanger you because of the transparency between your device and the owner of the connection. If you must connect to the internet, use the hotel’s Wi-Fi, as it is less likely to be hacked.

Avoid Wi-Fi connections near conferences or large events. If there is a big event going on near your location, be wary of Wi-Fi connections, since criminals look at these events as opportunities to gather personal information of individuals.

Make sure your computer is not set up to automatically connect to networks. If you are set up to connect to networks, you could be connecting to an unknown, unsecured network without knowing it. enabled your computer from unauthorized users gaining access by way of the internet or a connection. This can help decrease the likelihood of criminals installing viruses and Trojans on your device.

JDCF honored as Professional Organization of the Year

The Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation (JDCF) was honored as the Professional Organization of the Year at the Illinois Invasive Species Symposium held in award was made in conjunction with May being Illinois Invasive Species Awareness Month (ISAM), and recognized JDCF’s leadership in invasive species control and natural areas management in northwestern Illinois. Two of the most recognizable are the Asian carp and emerald ash borer, but we also face many challenges with invasive plants such as garlic mustard and Canada thistle. Summerset Theatre 41 season brings Smokey Joe’s Café to the stage Highland Community College’s 41st season of Summerset Theatre will present “Smokey Joe’s Café.”

Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. on July 10, 11, 12, 17, 18, and 19 on the stage of the Fine Arts Theatre located in the Ferguson Fine Arts Center on the Highland Campus.

Presented in revue format, the 39 songs are performed by members of the cast in various combinations.

This is the music of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, all 50’s and 60’s style, with songs such as “Jailhouse Rock,” “Kansas City,” “Stand By Me,” “Hound Dog,” “On Broadway,” and more.

The music of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, was nominated for seven 1995 Tony Awards, including best musical. The musical duo, as much as anyone, virtually invented Rock n’ Roll, and now their songs provide the basis for an electrifying entertainment that illustrates a golden age of American culture. In an idealized 50’s setting, the classic themes of love won, lost and imagined blend with hilarious set-pieces and slice-oflife emotions.

Director is Mark Jansen; choreographer is Julie Smith; Quynnetta Sanders is vocal director, and Allen Redford serves as music director, and Dave Vrtol serves as technical director.

There is a local Freeport tie to this musical production. Mike Stoller, is the husband of Corky Hale, formerly known as Merrilyn Hecht, who lived in Freeport and graduated from Freeport High School. Relay for Life Held at Milledgeville High The Carroll County Relay for Life was held at the Milledgeville High School been raised so far for this year’s Relay.

The congregations of Fair Haven, Hickory Grove, and Hope United Methodist churches welcome Pastor Mary Bohall as their new minister effective July 1.

Mary is the youngest and only daughter of four children and grew up in St. Joseph, Missouri, to Pentecostal parents. When she was 18 God called her into ministry and she has been pursuing that call ever since.

Mary attended college in the Chicago area and became United Methodist during that time. To help pay for her education she worked a myriad of odd jobs and part-time positions, including waitressing, cleaning houses, child care, special needs assistance, reception work, deli work, and shoe sales. After a brief break she moved to North Carolina to attend seminary. While there she worked with rural and inner-city congregations as well as doing hospital chaplaincy .

(PA photo/ Michael Miller) Has devoted his life to saving the bald eagle Terrence Neale Ingram started studying bald eagles in 1962, while teaching physics and math at the University of Wisconsin, Platteville.

In 1964, he received a research grant from the Southwestern Wisconsin Audubon Club to cover his expenses, while he donated his time to conduct this research. When he received his notice during the Vietnam War from his draft board, he asked them if his service could be delayed for six months, so he could complete his research. His draft board responded that there were many men dying for freedom, so at least one should be allowed to try to save the symbol of that freedom. He never heard from them again.

Since then he has devoted his life to trying to save the bald eagle by: conducting many research projects for the US Army, various power companies, state DNRs and conservation organizations; saving vital bald eagle habitat through purchase or in court, trying to stop actions by government agencies that would destroy such vital habitat; and trying to develop an awareness on the part of the public about the plight and importance of the bald eagle.

His research on wintering eagles has located over 50 wintering bald eagle roosts throughout the Midwest.

His efforts to save vital, endangered bald eagle habitat has resulted in saving eagle roosts at Eagle Valley Nature Preserve, Ferry Bluff Eagle Sanctuary, Oak Valley Eagle Preserve, Clarksville Island, Rice Lake Conservation Area, Savanna Army Depot, and Pere Marquette State Park.

To develop public awareness he wrote the coffee-table book, EAGLE, and is editor of the quarterly, Bald Eagle News. Since 1965 he has led many (up to seven in a winter) annual bald eagle bus tours. In 2014 he has three bus tours scheduled for January and February.

At one time he developed and was in charge of the nation’s second largest

captive bald eagle breeding facility Wildlife Photography, and publishes with 23 injured bald eagles, which the monthly Small Beekeeper’s Journal. were on loan to him from the US Fish He is a DVT, stroke, and cancer & Wildlife Service.

He originated Bald Eagle Days survivor, an “eagle rare life” indeed. in Cassville, WI in 1967. Starting in 1970 he made it into an annual event and moved it from city to city when the event changed to International Bald Eagle Days. These events have been held in: Madison, WI; Platteville, WI; Chicago, IL; St. Louis, MO; Minneapolis, MN; Davenport, IA; Rochester, NY; Winnipeg, MB; Orlando, FL; Scottsdale,AZ; Dubuque, IA; Chattanooga, TN; and Rochester, MN. He has authored the Proceedings of seven of these IBEDs. These events have been emulated across the nation as other organizations and communities saw how popular the initial event was.

Now each year there are over 50 such events conducted across the nation.

He started the Southwestern Wisconsin Audubon Club in 1961. He became President and Executive Director when it was incorporated as Eagle Valley Environmentalists in 1972, a position he has held through its name changes to The Eagle Foundation and the present Eagle Nature Foundation.

Hard to believe!

The sun is shining after a rainy week so we are taking advantage of the beautiful day. Benjamin, Joseph, Lovina, and Kevin are out in the garden pulling weeds. M y how those weeds took over! Our garden is looking great other than the weeds.

Our days are filled with all the work that summer brings. We canned rhubarb juice and put lots of Our strawberries were all from sister Emma’s patch. She had plenty for herself and to share with me.

Daughter Elizabeth turned 20 last week. She has now left her teen-

age years. What a nice young lady she has become. Being the oldest of 8 children made a very responsible girl at a young age. For her birthday I baked her a chocolate cake and then instead of using frosting to decorate it I used whipped topping and instant pudding mix . Timothy’s sister told me that she uses that instead of frosting. It was a hit in our family as the cake was gone faster than usual.

Verena is washing dishes and Loretta is gathering the clothes to wash. I feel like there’s no time to be sitting here writing. If only I could type fast instead of write I could be done sooner. So far I can still write faster than I can type. I’m getting better, though. I think it’s fun to type. If I keep practicing I might get better.

Today is my husband Joe’s last day before his vacation starts. He will go back to work July 7.

Today is also daughter Elizabeth and Susan’s last day before vacation, only they will get a 2 week break.

They won’t have to go back until July 15. So we are as excited as they are that we won’t have to follow a schedule for awhile.

Joe and the boys have already row. Susan’s boyfriend Mose will go with them and Susan is thinking

about going too. She said bluegill We are trying to get all the work caught up around here so we will have more free time next week. After all a vacation shouldn’t be spent working at home.

Last Sunday evening we were invited to one of our church family’s house for supper. We were served a delicious meal of barbecued chicken, potato casserole, green beans, tossed salad, cake, fruit salt, chocolate pudding, ice cream, chips, popcorn, punch, and coffee. They live right beside a river so we saw a lot of canoes go by.

Next month we have 100 baby chicks coming. Half are for laying and the other 50 are broilers which we will raise for meat.

Extreme Heat can be Serious Health Hazard

Never Leave Children, Pets In Cars On average, more people die from heat-related causes each year than any other weather hazard. Yet many people still don’t take heat dangers seriously.

That’s why the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) and local emergency management agencies will be working to increase awareness of heat safety throughout July, traditionally one of the hottest months in Illinois.

“We’ve had a few hot spells so far this year, but the hottest part of the summer is yet to come,” said IEMA Director Jonathon Monken. “Extreme heat isn’t just uncomfortable, it can be deadly. We want people to be aware of heat hazards and stay safe this summer.”

According to statistics compiled by the National Weather Service (NWS), more than 3,800 people died from heat-related causes in the U.S. from 1986 - 2013. During that same
