DUI Hit & Run in Rock Falls

At approximately 12:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 26, Whiteside County Deputies were called to the scene of a hit and run vehicle accident that occurred near the intersection of East Route 30 and McNeil Road in Rock Falls.

With assistance from the Rock Falls Police Department and the Illinois State Police, Troy L. Plemmons, 29, of Rock Falls was taken into custody for driving while intoxicated, driving while license suspended, improper lane usage, and failure to give information after striking property. Plemmons was transported to the Rock Falls Police Department were he was processed and released after posting bond.

Also cited in the accident was Dustin J. Funderberg, 31, of Rock Falls for allowing an intoxicated person to drive. Through the investigation it appears Plemmons missed his turn, drove onto private property, and struck two boat trailers, a privacy fence, and a parked vehicle before

The council meeting adjourned at 8:17 pm, with the continuation of the license/ordinance committee afterwards.

Lengthy discussion took place regarding the “Animals/Dogs at large� ordinance. Grimm reported that he had made the suggested changes, and recommended that the City Attorney look at the “dog� portion for review to try and get that Mayor Bates suggested splitting the ordinance into separate categories, with the issue of feral cats to follow the approval of the dog portion.

The Mount Carroll Community Vacation Bible School Committee would like to thank everyone who made this year’s VBS a success. This year, 75 children joined us for a week of fun with “Weird Animals – Where Jesus’ Love is One-Of-A-Kind.�

Each day, our volunteers helped children learn about Jesus’ love through music, Bible stories, demonstrations, crafts, games, and snack.

Many thanks to our volunteers who made time to help in many ways this week and to those who contributed A special Thanks to Ron & Stacy Carson, Dr. Alan Schroeder, JoAnn Hook, Ronnie Law, and Chase Olson for providing our demonstrations with animals throughout the week.

TLP hosts Theatre Immersion Workshops for Teens Timber Lake Playhouse will host its annual week-long theatre immersion workshops for teens Monday-Friday, July 14-18, 2014, and a one-day workshop for children ages 7-12 will be offered on Saturday, July 12, 2014.

Teens experience intensives in acting, dance, creative writing, theatrical design, and improvisation. The program is taught by TLP company members Erica Stephan and Cameron Turner, who are also dance and theatre teachers. The week culminates with an original performance incorporating all of the elements covered in the workshops.

Teen classes are 10 AM to 4 PM daily. The all-inclusive price is only $125 for the week. This includes a prepared lunch every day. Teens are given the chance to work with the resident company and experience “behind the scenes” of a working professional theatre. Additional

classes are held across the street at Timber Lake Resort.

Each student will receive a complimentary ticket to Les Misérables, which runs from July 31-August 10.

The one-day workshop for kids (MUST HAVE COMPLETED FIRST GRADE) is only $25. That program runs from 11 AM to 3 PM and includes a ticket to TLP’s 2 PM production of Pinkalicious The Musical.

Come Sing Along with ‘Yankee Doodle Dandy’ “Yankee Doodle Dandy” is proclaimed by the late Roger Ebert to be “the slickest, greatest, grandest movie of its time!” This nostalgic and patriotic movie will be in celebration of a late Fourth of July at Odell Public Library on Tuesday, July 15th at 2:00 PM in the Program Room.

The movie stars James Cagney, best known for his gangster roles, in the lead role as George M Cohan.

In Honor of Our Independence The Fourth of July has been a ffederal ederal holiday since 1941. Though that may seem like a long time for the country to wait to celebrate the independence it declared in 1776, the tradition of the Fourth of July, often referred to as Independence Day, dates back to the dawn of the American Revolution and the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. Since then, July 4th has been recognized as the dawn of American independence, and celebrations that included fireworks and parades can be traced back to the 18th century.

On July 4, 1777, the city of Philadelphia, which would become the first capital of the United States of America, held the first annual commemoration of American independence, and exactly one year later George Washington ordered that all of his soldiers be offered double rations of rum to commemorate the anniversary.

In 1781, Massachusetts was the first state to make July 4th an official state holiday, and the day was actually declared a federal holiday by the U.S. Congress in 1870. However, that In Honor of the declaration did not grant a paid holiday to federal 4th of July holiday employees. Eastland Board of Education Passes Resolution to Place the 1% County Sales Tax on November Ballot

June 23, 2014 — President Bill Woessner called to order a Public Hearing on amendments to the 2013-14 school year budget for Eastland CUSD #308. Dr. Hansen made a short presentation on budget adjustments and amendments previously outlined at the Regular May meeting. There were no comments from the public, and the hearing was adjourned.

President Woessner then called to order the Regular Meeting of the Eastland Board of Education for June, 2014. The Board approved the Treasurer’s Report and the payments of all bills and claims for the month, the minutes of the Regular Meeting of May 21st, and a resolution to designate Superintendent Hansen as the individual to review, statements of the district, including

report, and the data collection form on behalf of the district.

During Board Input, Superintendent Hansen shared information the Illinois School Board Convention in November, 2014 and registration for the 2014-15 school year at Eastland Jr./Sr. High School on Tuesday, July 29th, from 12:00 (noon) to 7:00 p.m.

Old Business The Board passed budget resolutions as required by statute, to amend the 2013-14 budget and/or transfer funds within the budget, to restrict or assign $200,000 in fund balances in the Education Fund for the 2014-15 budget year, and to leave accumulated interest in the debt service fund rather than transfer it to another fund of need. They also approved the bid from Wright Specialty of $49,353.00 for property, casualty and liability insurance for the 2014-15 school year.

The Board approved renewal of the District’s group health insurance plan effective August 1, 2014 with Health Alliance through the Illinois tium (ISEBC). Dr. Hansen reported that the renewal was the best value in that the plan and coverages would remain virtually the same as under the current Blue Cross/Blue Shield Plan while the premiums would be approximately 18% lower with Health Alliance than with BC/BS.

This represents an $85,000 difference in district-paid premiums during 2014-15.

Continuing, the Board of Education approved a 3-Year Collective Bargaining Agreement with the Eastland Education Association for 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17. The agreement increases the base salary for employees in the bargaining unit by $500, $600, and $650 each of the three years, or 1.59%, 1.87% and 1.99% respectively. The base salary in the previous contract had been frozen at $31,500 for three years.

will increase to $32,000 in 2014-15, $32,600 in 2015-16, and $33,250 in 2016-17. Dr. Hansen thanked the EEA and Board Negotiations Committees for their diligence and the extra hours over the last three months to reach an agreement.

Dr. Hansen reported on progress that the district has made on implementing recommendations of the Ad Hoc Committee on School Safety. The new security camera installations at EES and EJSHS are complete, and four additional buses will be equipped with security cameras for 2014-15.

Lanark and Shannon Police chiefs Troy Randall and Matt Magill have met with Eric Haan, the District’s Tech Director, to install remote camera access applications on their mobile phones. Hansen also reported that the District has been awarded a $17,000 School Security Grant from IEMA to make additional upgrades in systems.

The annual meeting to review the District’s Emergency Crisis Plan is scheduled for July, and Hansen said he is still working to better understand local law enforcement in response times to the different buildings.

We live in an interconnected world. Energy, cars, televisions, clothes and much more are traded among the countries. There are positives with global trade. If we canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get a good price at home then we can shop elsewhere. Shopping is as easy today as clicking on a computer webpage.

Competition keeps everyone on his toes. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve noticed in the last few years that a lot of my shirts are coming from Mexico, Vietnam and any place except the United States it seems. Years ago we laughed when we looked at little transistor radios that said made in Hong Kong. We didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t laugh very long as now it seems that everything electronic is made over â&#x20AC;&#x153;thereâ&#x20AC;? somewhere.

Competition grows as we import

As competition stiffens Americans must decide if we are going to compete. If we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t work harder and smarter we wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have anything in America that anybody else wants to buy. If we are buying everything from someplace else then who is buying our stuff made in America? If we are not selling our stuff made here then we will quit making or growing anything. Eventually we wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have any money in this country and China or Japan will not pay our Social Security or medical bills.

We need to regain our independence in America. We need to use all of our energy including oil, coal, solar, wind and natural gas. We need to stop

buying all foreign oil. We need to grow We need to bring our jobs back to America. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time that we made that attractive to all the corporations that for our jobs to come home.

We need to secure our borders. We canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t take care of all the illegals coming into this country because we are struggling to take care of ourselves. We need to get control of those who pilfer our government money. This includes public universities who charge exorbitant tuition rates because most of the tuition is either paid by taxpayers or student loans that bury young adults.

Medical providers sock it to the system as they bill Medical payers more than most Americans could ever pay.

We are spiraling out of control in America. In the meantime our Veterans are dying from poor medical care and our active soldiers worry if theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll even have a retirement or medical care after serving our country.

While our country struggles, Congress canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t agree on anything except paying themselves more while too many Americans are drowning in the pond of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Me, My, Mine and I.â&#x20AC;?

America will make it but it will be on the backs of those who are willing to dream, work and compete. Those are the people that carved out this wonderful place of opportunity and liberty over 200 years ago. Those are the same people who will keep this country going.

How many trees does a person need in their yard? I am the one who mows our lawn. Fifteen years ago, I could mow our lawn in less than an hour. With a little over an acre to mow, I used to be able to zip across the lawn at 7 miles per hour, with little or nothing slowing me down. But my wife has been planting trees, bushes and Ă&#x20AC;RZHU EHGV VORZO\ VR , GRQÂśW noticeâ&#x20AC;Ś for 15 years and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2DC;s getting to be a little too much in my opinion.

To date, I have 43 things to mow around - I counted.

Downtown Sidewalk Improvements Discussed by Village of Milledgeville Unapproved minutes by Christine A. Ottens, Village Clerk June 16, 2014 — A regular meeting of the Village Board of Trustees was called to order at 7:30 p.m. at the Village Hall in Milledgeville. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and roll was called with the following Trustees present: Bill Stage, Gene Behrens, Gary Geirnaeirt, John Helms, Stan Eads and Wayne Sprecher. Others present: Mike Leslie, Howard and Marci Horton, Dan Pepin, Tim Kendrick and Greg Miller.

The minutes from the June 2, 2014 meeting, paying all current bills as presented, and the Treasurer’s Report were approved.

‘Young Frankenstein’ Brings Hilarity to Life at TLP

Timber Lake Playhouse will present the local premiere of The New Mel Brooks Musical Young Frankenstein beginning Thursday, July 3. From the award-winning team that brought The Producers to international acclaim, this monster musical comedy, which runs through Sunday, July 13 with a 2:00 p.m. performance, is a dizzy, lavish and fast paced re-imagining of the Frankenstein legend based on

the country.

The story follows bright, young Dr. Frankenstein (that’s Fronkensteen), played by TLP favorite Cody Jolly, as he attempts to complete his grandfather’s masterwork and bring a corpse to life. Hanover Vacation Bible School It was an exciting week for children in Hanover during “Weird Animals” Vacation Bible School.

Forty- Four children gathered at the Hanover Township Hall for half day sessions where they could participate in crafts, music, one- ofa- kind Bible adventures, kid videos, games and more.

Each day a different snack representing the day’s lesson was given when the children arrived and at noon, lunch was served to all at the Hanover Presbyterian Church.

Maurine Sheppard led the children in the mission project for the week and enough money was

collected by the end of the week to provide clean water for more than sixty children in India for one year.

Pastor Kyungsu Park of Hanover United Methodist Church served as Director, A joint worship service was held in conjunction with the Vacation Bible School Week Sunday at the Hanover Township Hall with Hanover United Methodist and United Presbyterian Churches and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church participating. Those attending were able to see the beautiful animal scenes, hear the songs and learn about the successful week.

Illinois Legislation strengthening 1832 Independence Day Celebration at Apple River Fort GDL Program takes effect July 1 The law to further improve Illinois’ heralded Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program takes effect July 1. The new law requires people ages 18-20 who failed to attend driver education to complete a 6-hour driver training and education course before applying for a driver’s license.

“Since we implemented one of the nation’s most comprehensive GDL programs in 2008, teen driving fatalities have dropped nearly 60 percent,” said Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White, who proposed the measure. “But even the best programs can be made better, and this legislation will help strengthen our state’s GDL program, and hope-

fully save more lives.”

Prior to this law, when teens turned 18 – even without any driver education whatsoever – they were allowed to apply for and obtain a driver’s license. In 2013, there were 37,543 driver’s licenses issued to 18- to 20-year-olds. Of those, 18,532 did not take driver education.

In 1832 Independence Day was one of the biggest holidays of the year. You and your guests are invited to celebrate in 1832 style at the Apple River Fort on Sunday, July 6 from Noon to 3 pm.

Visitors are encouraged to bring a lawn chair and lunch, but there are also several places in the Village of Elizabeth that provide carryout lunch). Cookies and lemonade will be provided. Activities in and around the Fort will include a muzzle loading contest, games for all ages, period dancing, toasts, a Temperance Speech and a “Liar’s Club” contest.

There will also be a reading of the Declaration of Independence. It was tradition to have the Declaration of Independence read by upstanding local citizens, and the Fort will continue that tradition by having portions read by Elizabeth Mayor Michael Dittmar and other local dignitaries.

But mind you, the reading is not a solemn event! Listeners in 1832 would not have sat quietly during a reading of the Declaration of Independence, they would have

heartily cheered throughout the more patriotic portions and booed during the list of our grievances with the King. Visitors are encouraged to do the same! It is a good time with a lot of audience participation. raising ceremony will begin at Noon.

By LOVINA EICHER It is Thursday already and time to get this column out in todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mail. It hardly seems like two weeks have passed since I penned the last column. I was very happy that daughter Verena offered to write last week in my place. She loves to write so she didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have a problem about not getting the length of the column written. It helped out so much that I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to take time out of our busy summer schedule to write. Sometimes I can write a column in just a matter of minutes.

Then there are times when so much cult to concentrate on writing.

Like now it is 5:30 a.m. Daughters Elizabeth and Susan just left for work. My husband Joe left already

before 4 a.m.

The rest are still in bed so all is nice and quiet except for the noisy birds outside the window trying to let the world know that daylight is almost here. I like to hear the birds though and I could sleep through all their chatter if I was tired enough. Just knowing that the day will be another busy one takes the sleep from me. Coffee would sound good but if I have to make it just for myself I skip it a lot. On weekend mornings I always make a pot of coffee for Joe and I. Health-wise itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s probably better if Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m too lazy to go make some. We have been enjoying fresh spearmint tea from our garden. The children like it when I make iced tea with it. I remember as a little girl making tea from Momâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s garden. My sisters and I would wash off the tea leaves by the water pump outside.

One of us would sneak some sugar from Momâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sugar bowl while one hot water from Momâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tea kettle.

We had a little building outside for our playhouse. We had it set up like a house with all our dolls. The bed was a piece of plywood set on two blocks of wood. And pieces of wood worked as our chairs. But no matter how poor the furniture looked we had lots of fun playing mother to our dolls. With our tea we wanted food so someone would sneak in the house once more to see what we could use.

Sometimes it was cookies, saltine

crackers, or bread and apple butter.

I believe it is correct when they say â&#x20AC;&#x153;history repeats itselfâ&#x20AC;?. The other day I caught Lovina and Kevin raiding my cabinet that works as my pantry. They were looking for some food to eat outside with Lovinaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tea set. So I gave them some advice on what we did as children. They crushed saltine crackers for one dish and made little bites of peanut butter and jelly bread for another. Although theirs was just a tea party on a blanket in the yard they had a nice time. Oh to be that age again and be so carefree!

Elizabeth and Susan will only work until lunch time today. Timothy and Elizabeth and Mose and Susan are evening table-waiters at the wedding today of Tim and Rebecca. Rebecca is a cousin to Mose.

The color is a lovely shade of blue.

Try this recipe for a homemade zucchini scramble!

Zucchini Scramble 2 or 3 small zucchinis (about 1 pound) 2 T. butter 1/2 cup shredded cheese 1 medium onion, chopped 1 pepper, chopped 6 to 8 eggs, beaten In a skillet sautĂŠe zucchini, onion, and pepper in butter until tender. Season with salt and pepper.

Add eggs, cook and stir until set.

Sprinkle with cheese. Remove from heat and cover until cheese melts.

Sausage or other meats may be chopped and sautĂŠed along with the zucchini.

Elizabeth Chamber of Commerce Hosts Paint the Barnyard Color Run On Saturday morning, July 19, during the Elizabeth Community Fair, walkers and runners will be participating in a color run starting at the fairgrounds, going through town and into the country along Apple River Road. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is a perfect opportunity for all ages to enjoy some family time.
