Letters and Commentary Entry-level jobs under attack by America’s left wing

By Rick Manning Why does the left hate entry-level jobs?

That’s what many former fast food workers must be asking themselves after massive increases in the minimum wage in places like Seattle are being blamed for a wave of restaurant closures. Closures that deprive entry-level workers an opportunity to gain the work skill sets needed for the rest of their lives.

Fully one-third of Americans in the workforce got their start in the restaurant industry, including this author, who proudly remembers working at Carl’s Jr. in Corona, California, for minimum wage while attending Riverside City College. The discipline to keep a schedule, show up on time, work hard, and pay some bills while living at home has served me well for a lifetime.

When my wife turned 16, she got on her bicycle and hit every fast food restaurant in the small Central Valley town of Hanford, California, re-visiting stores every week until the local KFC hired her.

Invention uses panels to help with grain bin rescues Shannon man created device, helps train others

By TONY CARTON For Prairie Advocate SHANNON – When a grain engulfment happens, speed is of the essence.

“We want every department to be comfortable with performing a full rescue procedure,” said Kirsten Kniss, Eastland’s international sales manager “We don’t want our smaller or volunteer departments to be intimidated by the scope or legality of the procedure.

There isn’t time to wait around for a tech rescue team. You want to get in and get something around the victim.”

More panels can be locked and stepped down into the grain, regardless of depth, so that once the panels are in place, the grain can be removed and the victim extracted.

“The GWR equipment works really well, and the Great Wall has been used successfully in several rescues already. Rescue teams are pretty excited about having them, and we’re excited to get them out in this area,” Kniss said.

Coulthard said his organization takes an active interest in training fire and EMS teams because of the increasing number of grain industry accidents.

“There have been entrapments everywhere, so we’re doing our part to not only help educate the responders, but also our employees. They learn what to do, but also what not to do,” he said. “There is a lot more on-farm storage, so we’re going to see increased chances for these accidents to happen.”

That’s not the only factor.

“Harvest moistures were high last year, and if the grains weren’t properly dried, it will start bridging, and that’s when we see more farmers going into their bins trying to break it up,” he said. “It’s just human nature.

“It was a little different in the old days, when we

had smaller bins holding 3,000 to 5,000 bushels. But today, that size bin is just a temporary holding tank at best, and the opportunity for accident is increased.”

Mark Baker of State Line Farm Rescue of Orangeville organized the training.

“We’re going through all the regulations set in place by [Occupational Health and Safety Administration] and [National Fire Protection Association] standards rescue people need to know,” Baker said.

“We are also bringing awareness to the employees at the elevator and feed mill here, giving them an idea of what exactly they can do in the scope of rescue and how they can

Students get their wormology degree – and help save the earth

ELIZABETH — A team of four University of Illinois master gardeners are spreading the word – and the worms – about vermicomposting, one elementary school at a time.

Vermicomposting is the use of earthworms to break down organic material.

This Earth Day, the team visited second- and third-grade classes at River Ridge Elementary, where Celia Priegel teaches third grade.

Some teachers keep the mini bins in their classroom for future lessons, others send them home so students can care for them on their own. Follow-up information is provided in the form of bookmarks, and kids are given a signed Wormologist Certificate at the end of the program.

Motel expansion proposal back to zoning board Savanna Inn & Suites owner wants fewer parking spaces than required

By MICHAEL MILLER For Prairie Advocate SAVANNA — The owner of Savanna Inn & Suites hotel at 101 Valley View Road wants to expand, and add 45 rooms, but is seeking a variance to add fewer parking spaces than are required.

Scott Sullivan told the Savanna City Council that most of his customers are railroad workers who are shuttled to and from work,

and don’t need parking spaces. He asked that the required ratio of rooms to parking spaces be reduced to one and a half spaces per room, rather than one space per room, as now required.

Some members of the Zoning Board were concerned about the request, citing safety issues, but the board recommended approval based on the condition that Sullivan add 12 more spaces.

Morrison considers pet ordinance

Cancer survivors invited to 2015 Relay for Life

By LYNNETTE FORTH For Prairie Advocate MORRISON – Should the City Council tell its citizens how many pets they can have? It’s an ongoing debate.

The city has no ordinance governing the number of pets a person can own.

“Morrison’s code now just prohibits cruelty and neglect, but we don’t cap a resident,” City Administrator Barry Dykhuizen said at the May 26 council meeting. city code, it would provide

Since then, City Clerk Melanie Schroeder has been researching similar ordinances at surrounding communities. Several have laws limiting the number of dogs and cats that can be kept; many make exceptions for puppies and kittens.

Sterling’s ordinance, for example, limits the number of dogs and cats to four, animals caught running at large.

Morrison residents have mixed feelings about such an ordinance.

Council members reviewed the other ordinances at the meeting, but no action was taken.

“It’s not something that we’re just going to run right out and say, ‘Let me see how many cats you’ve got, or how many dogs you’ve said. “It would be more like something if there was a problem, and if there was a complaint, then we could go in. It’s not like we’re going to be on cat or dog patrol.”

Remembering Grandpa Daub

Position Available MILLEDGEVILLE — Students at Milledgeville Elementary School gathered their resources and donated money to purchase a red maple tree to remember “Grandpa” Floyd Daub.

Daub was a teacher, principal, superintendent, and even a bus driver at Milledgeville School, retiring in 1981 after a 31-year career in education.

Daub passed away in March 2014.

“He loved the school and continued to serve as a ‘Reading Grandparent,’” said his wife, Audrey, who attended a dedication event for the tree. “He thoroughly enjoyed his children’s and grandchildren’s activities, especially sports events and his weekly tutoring at the school, teaching a whole

Taking a HIT from Eastland Council of Churches Volunteers begin work fixing up home with help of grant

LANARK — The Eastland Council of Churches Home Improvement Task Force project is moving forward. Work started Saturday at Sally Grove’s home as a result of a community effort to help those in need, and a USDA grant.

The Rev. Rodney Caldwell is pastor at the Cherry Grove Church of the Brethren, a member of the Eastland Council of Churches and one of the HIT task force coordinators.

“Last fall, the idea was brought to the ECC and has come to fruition faster than expected,” said Caldwell.

Lanark Mayor John Huggins presented information about a U.S. Department of Agriculture Single Family Housing Repair Loans and Grants program. Also known as the Section 504 Home Repair program, it provides loans to very-lowincome homeowners to repair, improve or modernize their homes or grants to elderly very-low-income homeowners to remove health and safety hazards.

“I hope we can get more people in the Lanark and Shannon area to apply now that we have a local case that has worked out so well,” Huggins said.

“Together with the new ECC HIT force, I think we can help many people in our communities.”

Obituaries Patricia Ann Burmeister

LANARK — Patricia Ann Burmeister, 82, of Lanark, passed away Saturday, May 23, 2015, at Good Samaritan nursing home in Mount Carroll.

She was born Nov. 17, 1932, in Benton County, Iowa, the daughter of Charles Stelcik and Mildred (England) Stelcik.

She graduated from Belle Plaine High School in Belle Plaine, Iowa, in 1950, and married Wayne Louis Burmeister on May 18, 1952, in Belle Plaine.

She was a bookkeeper for Carroll Service Co, in Lanark from 1977 until she retired in 1998. She previously worked as an inventory control clerk for Eaton Corp. and as an assembler for Appelt Manufacturing, both in Lanark.

Patricia was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Lanark.

She is survived by

her husband, Wayne, at Good Samaritan; three sons: Michael (Nancy), of Genoa; Scott (Debra), of Neenah, Wisconsin; and Barry (Karyn), of Crystal Lake; a daughter, Vicki Blum, of Polo; 14 grandchildren and 14 greatgrandchildren.

Patricia was preceded in death by her parents, brother Calvin (Jack) Rogers, one grandchild and two great-grandchildren.

Interment will be in Lanark Cemetery.

Services were held Thursday at Russell-Frank Funeral Home in Lanark.

LAKE CARROLL — Sonja K. Gulley, 70, formerly of Lake Carroll, died Thursday, May 28, 2015, at her son’s home in Apex, North Carolina.

Sonja was born July 27, 1944, the daughter of Alfred

and Evelyn (Rude) Kuykendall, in Twin Falls, Idaho, where she grew up on their family farm. She attended Jerome High School and graduated with the Class of 1962. Sonja married Richard Gulley on Sept. 21, 1963, in Jerome, Idaho.

Sonja worked as a dental years. Her favorite job, though, was being a mother to her three boys. She was a member of Church of the Brethren in Lanark, along with other church and Bible study groups, the 4-H Club, Meals on Wheels, and Republican Women.

Sonja’s favorite hobby was leading people to Christ and being a philanthropist who supported her local churches. She enjoyed spending time on the lake and at her home in Lake Carroll with her husband.

She loved to craft and spent her spare time making items that were sold in the local stores and hospital gift shops. Sonja adored

throwing parties and spending time with her friends.

Most of all, she treasured watching her grandchildren grow up.

Sonja will be dearly missed by her husband of 51 years, Richard Gulley; three sons, Bob (Christine) Gulley of Apex, North Carolina, David (Denise) Gulley of Grayslake, Don (Jennifer) Gulley of Vancouver, Washington; eight grandchildren; a brother, Laverne Kuykendall of Monument, Colorado; and two sisters, Janice (Fred) Wutzke of Corvallis, Oregon, and Rosalee (Jerry) Kullman of Prescott Valley, Arizona. She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Evelyn.

LANARK — “Mission: Relax and Read” is a Friends of the Lanark Public Library summer project promoting books, the library and community pride in which participants are invited to decorate a chair depicting a favorite book and place it in their front yard.

“The FLPL hopes the designs will remind passers-by of beloved books and pique interest in new titles,” said Denise Krysiak,

In our country, history is safely stored in books, archived on the Internet, and retold to schoolchildren in songs and rhymes. From Rosa Parks and the Montgomery bus boycott to the recent uprisings in Missouri and Maryland, all of it stands a good chance to be remembered.

But who would remember an event if a government chose to erase its existence, and punished discussion about it?

To some, the brave image of a man blocking a tank column comes to mind at Tiananmen Square is discussed. But in China, Internet searches for “Fourth,” “Tiananmen” and “Tank Man” come up empty, as if it never happened.

That’s the goal of China’s government, according to Chadwick resident Daniel Nardini, who was in the country for almost a month before the spontaneous

“Activities included are agility, on-leash and off-leash; all levels of obedience from beginners novice on up; rally obedience for beginners and novices on leash; and showmanship divided by age. Classes are judged according to AKC guidelines.

Mixed-breed dogs are welcome,” said Judy Lohse, Granny Rose’s manager.

All participants receive a goody bag,

and there will be ribbons for first through fourth place in each class, plus other prizes.

Trophies are awarded for best performances in all categories.

We young married ladies each made a dessert so there was a wide variety ranging from rhubarb pie, Reese’s cake, jello desserts to Amish baked apple pudding and cheesecakes (no calorie counting, please!). It certainly was a feast worth

waiting for.

After our tummies were ing ballgames, especially the one which the lower grades played against their mothers! Now that was worth watching! This time it was the mothers who tried to keep up with their children. At the end the mothers won by a run.

Thankfully we didn’t have too much rain, just a light drizzle, not enough to bring the games to a halt. Some of us watched from the lean-to of the barn while others found shelter in an enclosed trailer. They needed one more shelter for the fans on the other ball diamond, so someone suggested pulling a buggy over to it.

2 eggs 4 cups apples, diced 1/2 cup vegetable oil 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 cups flour 2 cups sugar 2 teaspoons baking soda 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon Sauce 1/2 cup margarine 1 cup milk 1 cup brown sugar 1 tablespoon vanilla 1 tablespoon flour Break eggs over apples.

Stir well. Next add vegetable oil and vanilla and stir.

Then add dry ingredients and bake in 9 x13 cake pan at 350 for one hour.

In saucepan cook sauce ingredients.

When cake and sauce are cold put sauce on top of cake.

Serve with a dab of whipped topping on each piece.

Saturday was a special day for all of us, a highlight for the entire church. It was the day for our annual end-ofthe-year school picnic. The schoolchildren presented a program followed by a delicious lunch and softball games.

Everyone was anxious to see what the weather would be like. With a 90 percent chance of rain, it looked quite bleak to think of having any decent ballgames.

Saturday morning, Julia woke up and asked if it was raining.

“Yes, it’s raining right now, but God can make the rain stop if he decides that’s best,” I explained.

People began arriving at the school house at 8 a.m.

We eagerly anticipated listening to the children’s songs and the poems they had memorized. Finally, it was time for them to line up front.

First, we sang a few congregational songs followed by a brief devotional, then the 21 scholars along with the two teachers (which included my husband Daniel) rose to their feet and began the program with a round song. I loved listening to it as the notes blended harmoniously with the upper grades singing different stanzas than the lower grades.

The program lasts an hour or so. This year it was about having a “servant heart” out for the good of others.

The teachers had picked out songs and poems to go with their theme. It all blended together well and truly

was a motivator to serve others, regardless of who or where we are. I especially enjoyed watching the little children.

After the program it was time for a game of softball. Amazingly enough the rain had slowed down to a light drizzle by then.

We were delighted that the weather cleared enough for the upper grades to play a game against their fathers.

It was the game we were all eagerly waiting to watch and see how it would turn out.

We clapped and cheered for the children as they enthusiastically dug in to do their very best. They certainly did a fantastic job, their runs soaring as they kept making good hits, including some grand slams. The dad’s tried their best as well, yet it was obvious that they weren’t as young and limber as the children. Neither did they have as much practice as they undoubtedly did during their teen years.

At the end of the seventh inning the students had beaten their dads by a good number of runs. We all cheered and clapped — even the dads joined in to clap for them. Of course the dads, even though they lost, couldn’t help but be glad for them as well.

By the time the ball game had ended our stomachs were growling and we were all ready to dig into the scrumptious lunch awaiting us.

‘We are family’ Deputy travels to Nebraska to take part in slain officer’s memorial service, procession

Billy Murray spends his day off helping others, and today, he’s mowing and tidying a cemetery on state Route 172.

Although some people might miss it – it’s a manageable plot with no address – it’s a job that he feels must get done.

A sense of duty slowly is revealed as Murray, 56, describes who he is and where he’s from.

The Whiteside County patrol sergeant wears a blue T-shirt, already stained with the effects of a midday sun, as cars, pickup trucks, and farm traffic blur by on the road next to him.

His smile is bright as he shares some of his experience: he’s worked more than 20 years at the sheriff’s department, and before that, served in the Air Force for 13 years. In a month, he transitions to a detective role.

Like many in law enforcement, he has seen death approach.

A couple of years ago on patrol, for example, he received a call for a man with a gun who had been threatening suicide.

The man shot and killed himself about 5 feet from officers as they attempted to negotiate, Murray said.

You never know what’s going to happen, he warned, and although most situations are uneventful, there’s always a palpable risk.

At the beginning of the week, the Sterling native drove to Omaha, Nebraska, to take part in a hundreds-strong processional and ceremony to honor Officer Kerrie Orozco, who had been killed while serving a fugitive warrant. She was 29.

Murray felt an immediate connection to her as details surrounding the death emerged, fix-

ated not only by how her life ended, but the manner in which she led her life, he said.

She was a shining example of how to help people, and got many in her community to look past the uniform. She coached youth athletics, and volunteered at every chance.

“It’s one of those things where you feel like you got cheated by not knowing her,” Murray said. “I didn’t know Kerrie, [but] I wish I would have known her.”

He made his way out west around 11 a.m. on Memorial Day, and after more than 5 hours in his cruiser, arrived at the intersection where the shooting took place.

The city seemed so quiet, he said.

A vigil and visitation were later that evening, and went well into the night. It was primarily reserved for family and friends, so he hadn’t planned to attend.

Murray spent the night visiting his daughter, and readied for the long day ahead by shining his boots and ironing his uniform.

Tuesday was intense, he said, as police personnel gathered near St. John’s Catholic Church on the Creighton University campus and formed a “gauntlet.”

A large formation of officers assembled on a cobblestone street, and as family walked through, a slow, 4-second salute was displayed, Murray said, raising his hand to his brow.

“That was pretty heartwrenching,” he said, describing the family walking through three times; they saluted each time.

A mounted patrol passed through the formation with four horses, which included a riderless horse with boots in the stirrups, he said, and that was just the beginning.

Thousands are said to have lined the streets to pay tribute, and a variety of impromptu memorials popped up across the city.

A squad car parked on grass was decorated by officers in black and blue felt; a large wreath stood at attention, and ribbons and flowers lay on the ground.

Murray also was part of the vast convoy of police vehicles that stretched as far as the eye could see. It eventually made its way to Council Bluffs, Iowa, where Orozco lived.

“We are family,” said Murray, who in the same breath was quick to remind that there always are two sides.

“When you say a prayer for Kerrie, say a prayer for [the gunman],” he added.

“If you have a problem with that, say a prayer for his family. Somebody loved him, and somebody’s hurting.”

As Murray gets his equipment ready to begin mowing, he returns from his pickup truck parked on the side of the road with a cellphone filled with photos and video from the trip, and a special token – a T-shirt that helps the Orozco family.

“Kerrie Orozco … OPD #1969 … Delta 17 [her radio call sign],” reads white block lettering on the back. Stores were selling out within the first couple of hours, he said.

Below that is a solid blue horizontal line, followed by “E.O.W. [end of watch] 5/20/15, heroes live forever.”

Officer Kerrie Orozco is survived by her husband Hector; two stepchildren; and newborn daughter, Olivia Ruth.

Free presentation on WWII mission offered in Sterling

By STEPHANIE VAVRA For Prairie Advocate STERLING — A presentation on a World War II mission that saved a bridge and helped the Allies shorten the war in Europe, will be offered at 2 p.m.

June 14 in the CGH Medical Center Ryberg Auditorium, 100 E. LeFevre Road.

Wolf Koch, an instructor at Sauk Valley College, will present the program, for the Sterling-Rock Falls Historical Society.

Koch, born in Germany, served in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed near Remagen.

“The Battle of Remagen during the Allied invasion of Germany resulted in the unexpected capture of the Ludendorff Bridge over the Rhine River and possibly shortened World War II in Europe,” Koch said. “After capturing the Siegfried Line, the 9th Armored Division

of the U.S. First Army had advanced unexpectedly quickly towards the Rhine.

They were very surprised to see that the railroad bridge was still standing.”

The Germans had wired the bridge with about 6,200 pounds of demolition charges, but when they tried to blow it up, only a portion of the explosives detonated.

U.S. forces captured the bridge and rapidly expanded the Rhine, 2 weeks before “Operation Plunder.”

“This action prevented the Germans from regrouping east of the Rhine and consolidating their positions,” Koch said.

In addition, free tours have resumed at the Historical Society’s Lincoln-Manahan Home Museum, 607 E. Third St. in Sterling. They are available from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday through Nov. 1.
