Board OKs copier lease agreement, saves $300,000

By MICHAEL MILLER For Prairie Advocate MOUNT CARROLL – West Carroll School District’s new copy machine lease should save about $300,000, Superintendent Craig Mathers told the board at its May 20 meeting.

The contract with Advanced Systems of Dubuque, Iowa, is $60,543.04 a year cheaper than the old contract, and includes a yearly service contract and teacher training.

New AVC director New Area Vocational Center Director Nancy Jogerst spoke about her goals and plans for the center.

She reminded the board that everyone can attend classes at the AVC, as well as juniors and seniors from the designated area, and that college credit is available.

All AVC teachers have at experience. Classes offered include auto body, graphic

design, criminal justice, child care, and construction technology and computer networking.

Jogerst said she hopes to build up the welding program, revive the cosmetology program and cooperative education programs and introduce a culinary arts program. She also wants to see more community involvement, and improve technology at the center to open up more educational opportunities for the students.

The AVC also is undergoing a name change, to the Jo Daviess Carroll Area Career Technical Education Academy.

MOUNT CARROLL – Because of all their social media updates, students are using large amounts of bandwidth – a situation the West Carroll school board is looking at.

Although he has addressed the issue, Technology Director Brad Field said at the May 20 meeting that this still amounts to “utilizing bandwidth for noneducational purposes.”

Middle School Principal Julie Katzenberger said that there was discussion of letting students have phones and devices in their lockers only, as was previous policy.

Board President Mike Highland noted that, according to the handbook, students are allowed to use their personal devices during the day, but Field said his understanding was that that usage was to be for educational purposes.

Superintendent Craig Mathers said the board could change the handbook at any time. Highland said he wanted direction from the board.

Letters and Commentary Time to ban Roundup, for bees’ sake

Ingram Editor and Publisher Small Beekeepers Journal The whole world seems to be learning how important honeybees are to our environment and that our honeybees and other insects are having problems surviving. Because of this, there has been a big push to ban neonictinoids to save our honeybees. However, this action is missing the real culprit, glyphosate – the main ingredient in Roundup. But Monsanto, which makes Roundup, is so huge and powerful that no university researchers want to go against the company’s statements that Roundup only affects plants.

Roundup is the real cause of Colony Collapse Disorder in honeybees. I have been studying the effects of Roundup on honeybees for 20 years. bees that are collecting the nectar and pollen, so sick that they do not return to the hive. Honeybees know that if they die in the hive other bees will have to waste time carrying out their dead bodies, so if possible a honey-

bee will die away from the hive. But before they die they will unknowingly make a couple of trips bringing some of the contaminated honey and pollen back to the hive. It is converted into royal jelly in a gland in the worker bee’s head and is fed to the young larvae, killing them.

If the queen is laying many eggs a day she has to be fed a lot of royal jelly. If the royal jelly is contaminated too much it will kill her. Within three days all the older bees, which are the Because so much food is needed in the hive the younger adult bees will try to take over their older sisters’ jobs and return to the hive after a few trips to the hive rapidly decreases. The young larvae are all being killed by the contaminated food and the queen may be killed if she is fed too much of it. So we have a case of CCD. The population of honey bees in a hive has crashed with no dead bees being seen near the hives.

Most of the adult bees are gone, the

young larvae are killed, and if the queen is also killed, the colony has no way of producing a new one. This can all happen in a matter of three days.

Sometimes the queen will abscond or leave the hive, with only a few hundred of her workers that are still alive, but their chances of survival are almost nil.

But honeybees are not the only insects affected by Roundup. It kills most all of or nearby. Before these insects die they will have glyphosate in the their bodies and insect eating birds that feed on those insects die as well. That is why brown thrashers, catbirds, bluebirds, chimney swifts, and blackbirds will sprayed with Roundup.

In other countries it has been proven that glyphosate is moving through the food chain working its way all the way up to humans mother’s milk. But in this country no one even looks for glyphosate in other insects, birds, mammals, amphibians, or even humans.

Plans are afoot to change the way general state aid is calculated for smaller districts with low EAV; instead of across the board cuts, the plan would be to cut per student, which would be a more equalized plan, he said.

The Illinois Association of School Administrators has been successful in at least slowing down legislation that would make it impossible to suspend or expel any student, regardless of violation, he added.

Midwestern BioAg moves to business park MILLEDGEVILLE — Midwestern BioAg Inc. is building a 17,000-squarefoot fertilizer blending and distribution facility in Milledgeville.

The plant, in the Milledgeville Business Park at the intersection of state Route 40 and Shannon Road, will have the capacity to service hundreds of thousands of farmland acres and is expected to employ 15 to 20 staff over the next 2 years, the company said.

“On behalf of our citizens and the surrounding agricultural community, we welcome Midwestern BioAg to Milledgeville,” Milledgeville President Galen Wirth said. “Midwestern BioAg will be a nity, and we look forward to a long relationship with them.”

By GALEN WIRTH Milledgeville Village President On Tuesday, May 12, the Milledgeville Village Board met with our attorney to approve the Redevelopment Agreement to sell our 30.3-acre industrial park to Midwestern BioAg of Blue Mound, Wisconsin. This is Midwestern of Illinois. Our attorney called me on the afternoon of May 15 to inform me that all of the paperwork had cleared the proper channels. The village was wired the purchase price of the property that afternoon.

Finding an occupant for the industrial park has been a long and tedious process that has taken 7 years. The deal with Midwestern BioAg has taken 21 months.

Midwestern BioAg should be up and running by October 2016. Midwestern Bio Ag will be a great addition to our village and surrounding area and will add 10 to 12 full-time jobs along with several part-time jobs.

Could this be the same problem that our bald eagle is facing as it, too, is having trouble with its reproduction? Could glyphosate or Roundup be the DDT of the 21st century, working its way through our whole food chain?

We need to ban Roundup now before it is too late. As we now know, glyphosate bioaccumulates in the environment, and we have just learned that it is also carcinogenic.

Perhaps it may already be too late!

omen’s Committee members are quite busy this time of year. They just did their hamburger promo and now, from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. June 8, they will hold a blood drive with the Rock River Valley Blood Center. This is the first time we have held a drive with them, and I have heard nothing but good things. We like it that the blood goes to our local hospitals. If you are able to give that day, please give our office a call at 815-244-3001.

Not that I need to tell any of you, but time certainly month marked my ninth year as manager here in Carroll County. It makes me feel really old when I think how I have been with Farm Bureau for more than 15 years. I can still at Stephenson County as bookkeeper many, many moons ago. Things have certainly changed over the years, and they keep changing daily.

Nine years ago, my main form of communication with our board and our Young Leaders was not by texting them. I don’t believe back then I was getting my emails on my cellphone. My work time meetings than it is now.

With advances in technology, we don’t need the meetings. Everyone is able to get the info they need sooner than we can throw together a meeting, unless it is something very timely and very important.

Also earlier this month was our annual managers conference. One of our speakers, actually the author of Race for Relevance, spoke on associations and the changes they face. Mary stated that since 2006, we work 568 more hours a year. That is more than 10 hours more a are all running around like It is also no wonder that more meetings are not held, and more people are moving toward webinars, emails, etc. It is also no wonder why people are burned out. It doesn’t always happen, but in today’s times, it is about the only time everyone is in one So now that I am completely off topic on how things have changed in the last 9 years, you know that you just wasted how many minutes of your already busy life, to read my rambling. Former Savanna council member, three others die in head-on crash U.S. 20 closed for hours after wreck A former Savanna City Council member, his wife and son-in-law died, and their daughter was injured, in a head-on crash that also killed the other driver and closed U.S. Route 20 for about 5 hours Thursday in the Tapley Woods Conservation Area.

The wreck happened just before 9:30 a.m., when a southbound Ford Ranger veered into the northbound lane and collided with a Toyota minivan, Jo Daviess County Sheriff Kevin Turner said in a news release.

The minivan driver, Walter Mercer, 61, of Hanover, and the Ranger driver, Raymond “Skip” Anger Jr., 68, of Hanover

and Dubuque, Iowa, were killed, as was Mercer’s in-laws, Robert Fosdick, 83, and his wife, Patricia, 85.

Mercer’s wife, Rhonda Mercer, 63, was hospitalized. Her condition was unavailable Tuesday.

Anger was alone in the pickup. The crash remains under investigation, the release said.

Fosdick last served on the council in 2007.

Obituaries for the Fosdicks and Mercer, who retired from Kelly Springin 2007 after 34 years, are on Page A9 of this week’s edition. Law-Jones Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Obituaries Carolyn Marie Nelson

LANARK — Carolyn Marie Nelson, 77, of Lanark, passed away May 21, 2015 after a valiant 4-year battle with pancreatic cancer.

She was born at home on Feb. 22, 1938, to Arthur and Mildred (Bouton) Zinser.

On June 10, 1961, she was united in marriage with John Edward “Ed” Nelson in Hooppole. The marriage resulted in six children, (partner Tass Johnson), of Stoughton Wisconsin, Beth Nelson (partner Tony Simmons), of Everett, Washington, Steve (Mollie) Nelson and grandchildren William and Jacob of Sacramento, California, Becky (Jeff) Blend of Helena, Montana, and Shawn (Jenn) Nelson and grandchildren Emma, Seth, Micah, and Lucas of Forreston.

Carolyn was an excellent cook and housekeeper, devoted to her family. She was active in the DAR scholarship selection committee and enjoyed being an election judge for many years. She also taught GED classes at Rolling Hills Progress Center for several years and was an inveterate Cubs fan. She will be greatly missed by all.

Carolyn is survived by Ed, her husband of 53 years; her Robert, of Arizona; Lester,

Hazel Dobbs, of Florida; Rodney, of Texas; Phyllis Rosenbloom, of Albany, New York; and Roger (Beth Burns), of Kalamzoo, Michigan; and her loving cat Princess.

She was preceded in death by her infant son Tim, brother Everett (Lucille) Zinser, brother Leslie (Eilene, dec.), and sister Leska Clusen.

Visitation was Tuesday and services today at Lanark United Methodist Church. Burial was in Lanark Cemetery.

HANOVER — Walter H. “Wally” Mercer, 61, of Hanover, died in a motor vehicle accident Thursday, May 21, 2015 in Jo Daviess County.

Wally was born Feb. 14, 1954, the son of Everett and Alberta (Fastenau) Mercer in Bridgeport, Nebraska. He was raised in Hanover and attended Hanover High School. He married Rhonda A. Fosdick on May 28, 1978, at First United Methodist Church in Savanna.

Wally worked for Kelly in Freeport for 34 years, retiring in 2007. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially

also enjoyed pug dogs and working with computers. He was quick-witted to say a funny, sarcastic remark. Most of all, Wally treasured spending time with his family and friends.

Wally will be dearly missed by his wife, Rhonda of Hanover; two sons, Jason (Scott Biggs) Mercer rick (Melissa Martin) Mercer of Muscatine, Iowa; two grandchildren, Quincy Thommen and Ethan Mercer; one brother, Theo Mercer of Omaha, Nebraska; and two sisters, Kathy (Jim) Smeloff of Chandler, Arizona and Pat (Jerry) Skillman of Mount Pleasant, Iowa.

SAVANNA — Robert “Bob” and Patricia “Pat” Fosdick died in a motor vehicle accident Thursday,

May 21, 2015 in Jo Daviess County.

Robert and Patricia were married on July 14, 1951, at First United Methodist Church in Galena. They enjoyed traveling and camping together. Robert trapping. Patricia enjoyed the outdoors, but despised kind into the house. Most of all, Bob and Pat enjoyed spending time with each other, family and close friends.

Robert was born June 6, 1932, the son of Samuel and Elsie (Haring) Fosdick in Savanna. He attended Savanna High School and graduated with the Class of 1950. Robert proudly served his country in the United States Army. Robert worked as a brakeman for the Milwaukee Railroad, retiring in 1972. He was a former member of the Savanna City Council and the Savanna Moose Lodge.

Patricia was born on Nov. 27, 1930, the daughter of Ralph and Gladys (McDowell) Clough in Guttenberg, Iowa. She attended Galena High School and graduated with the Class of 1948. Patricia was a homemaker who cherished taking care of her family. She also worked at the Savanna Proving Grounds and at Gambles retail store in Savanna. She was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church in Savanna.

$14,000 in tools, other items stolen SAVANNA — The Carroll County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a burglary in which $14,000 in tools, equipment, ATVs, lawn mowers and air compressors were taken from a site near the water tower on Vine Street sometime between March 15 and May 5.

Visiting courthouse, capital Eighth-graders get up-close look at government process MILLEDGEVILLE – ChadwickMilledgeville eighth-graders students got a taste of government during their last month of classes, participating in Carroll County Government Day on May 8.

“Twelve of our eighth-graders had the privilege of job-shadowing our tour of the courthouse and jail, and participated in a mock trial,” Superintendent Tim Schurman told the board. “It was a great experience for the students and we would like to

The eighth-grade overnight trip to dents met with Gov. Bruce Rauner, Schurman added.

“Senior Scholarship Night was a great success thanks to the hard work of Principal Brian Maloy and adviser Barb Peugh,” Schurman said. “Over 119 local scholarships were given out totaling $33,229.50. In addition, $182,150 in scholarships were received from other sources.”

Junior High gym. High School graduation was May 17. Monday is the last day of school.

Also at the meeting: The board authorized Schurman to seek bids for bread, milk, and gasoline/fuel for the 2015-16 school year, for a new minivan for special education and RAP transport, and for the sale of a 2005 Chrysler minivan.

Summer school will run June 2-18, and will be taught by Shelly Parks, Kathy Skoog, Jody Engelkens, and Kirk Engelkens. Engelkens will administrate summer school.

John Nesemeier is resigning as

district transportation director, effective June 30; Lisa Richter is retiring as district librarian and third-grade teacher; Kelly Zoulek, Milledgeville head cook, will be dismissed at the end of this school year; and Andrea Jordan’s request for leave was granted.

The district has 13 positions open for next fall, Schurman said.

Schurman said Rauner’s reform but it is not yet known what school funding will look like next year.

The board next meets at 7 p.m. June 15 at the Milledgeville High School Library.

Seniors Around the County Great River Outreach The Great River Outreach offers a delicious meal, friendship, and good conversation at two locations. In Savanna, food is served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, at the former Chestnut Park School near Poopy’s, south of town on state Route 84. In Mount Carroll, food is served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Carroll United Methodist Church.

An avid fan of assembling jigsaw puzzles, he nearly always accomplishes his piece into the center puzzle every time he stops in.

Health Beat: What is osteoporosis?

By MARK KLEIN In the last article, we talked about the effect of increasing age or inactivity on your balance. Your bones also can weaken as years go by, especially if combined with an inactive

lifestyle. Bones contain a lot of calcium. If bones are not challenged in some way, they lose calcium, which leads to osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis simply means “porous bone,” because if you look at unhealthy bone tissue under a microscope, it contains more tiny holes that make it less dense and more brittle.

In this situation, a fall, often caused by poor balance, can result in a fracture.

Osteoporosis occurs mainly in the hips and in the lower spine. Hip fractures

can occur with advanced osteoporosis, and many tiny compression fractures can develop in the vertebrae of the spine — not usually dangerous or painful, but this is one reason why people lose height as they get older! If loss of bone density in the spine becomes more severe, it can affect the curve of the spine, resulting in a stooped or bent-over posture.

So exercising while you’re on your feet gives you that extra bone stress needed to keep the tissue strong.

Adding resistance like weights or elastic tubing helps as well, but for your hips and spine, walking is always a good activity.

Thirty minutes of walking most days of the week is a

good exercise goal.
