Mathers reflects on 8 years at helm Superintendent ready to retire

MOUNT CARROLL — After 8 years at the helm of the West Carroll School District, Superintendent Craig Mathers is stepping down and easing into retirement. He reflected on where the district was when he arrived, what it’s been through, where it’s at now, and where it might be headed.

Mathers succeeded Lonnie Lemon, who served as superintendent from 2006 to 2008.

“Lonnie and I have been friends since 1983,” Mathers says. “We started out competing against each other as basketball coaches, we became friends. He’s one of the reasons I’m here.”

When Lemon took a job in Quincy, he told Mathers he wanted his resume, because he was departing West Carroll and thought Mathers would be a “perfect candidate” for the job.

West Carroll was in its fourth year when Mathers took the job, and the financial situation was not good.

“They were trying to find out why they were in so much financial difficulty,” he says.

(PA photo/Michael Miller) When there is a consolidation, the state gives the schools involved money to bring up salary schedules so that no one is forced to take a pay cut. This gives schools 4 years to plan accordingly, so that once the state money ends, the schools have a plan in place.

Because of a misreading of the state notification, district officials assumed the district would get $2.4 million every year for 4 years, instead of spread out over 4 years — a $7.2 million mistake.

Mathers says another financial miscalculation was made by the Committee of

Ten. “They believed that by putting the three districts together, ... they predicted the EAV of the district would go up by 25 percent, just by consolidation. ...

But every one of their EAV

calculations was off by 25 percent, which was also a funding error. ... You don’t take three Enrons and turn them into Walmart overnight. That was the bill of sale that had been given to this community.”

With the district financial profile status up to “recommend” or “review,” Mathers feels these bonds could be sold at a rate of 2.5 to 3 percent. This, in turn, would save almost 5 percent in interest for taxpayers, driving the tax rate down again.

These mistakes created an environment where “you’re always fighting financial battles,” Mathers says. He said that the district sold working cash bonds 2 months before he arrived, with the prediction that the EAV would go up 3 percent every year for the next 15 years, or a cumulative 30 percent increase.

Instead, the district has seen a 10 percent increase in EAV over 11 years, less than 1 percent a year.

“So what’s happened is that, if you live in the West Carroll School District, ... your tax rate continues to go up every year because I can’t control it based on the bonds that were sold.”

FULTON – The only medical marijuana dispensary in northwestern Illinois plans to open as soon as possible.

The Dispensary, at 1801 16th Ave., with help from the Fulton Chamber of Commerce, hosted an open house and ribbon cutting May 17, with more than 50 guests and potential patients attending, said Kurt Dreger, manager and co-owner of the facility where people will be able to purchase medical marijuana with a state-issued permit.

The planned opening for the 3,150-square-foot facility is in 2 to 3 weeks, pending approval of a state inspection that took place May 18.

“The inspection went well, and the inspectors were impressed with our building,” Dreger said.

“We will know about our opening day soon, which

gives us time to continue our search for the best quality product at the best possible price. We will pass on the savings to our patients, many of whom are on disability. We want our product to be affordable.”

Anyone with a permit can purchase medical marijuana at The Dispensary as long as it is designated on their application, but it will mostly serve patients in Carroll, Whiteside, Lee and Ogle counties.

More than 100 people have permits in District 1, which includes those counties.

About 6,200 people have permits statewide.

“We were definitely fortunate to obtain the location we have here in Fulton.

“The other dispensaries are in different stages of construction,” Dreger said.

“There are a lot of hoops to jump through in order to get a dispensary.”

The Dispensary occupies one of three spaces in the new shopping center being

built by Davenport, Iowa, developer Dan Dolan in a lot at state Routes 84 and 136.

Called Fulton Crossing, it is in a tax increment financing district. The next phase for the shopping center is to rent the commercial units on each side of The Dispensary.

“This is a really good opportunity for Fulton to see some new retail development, and hopefully, more jobs,” Dreger said.

Dreger said The Dispensary is not hiring, but those who are interested in working at the facility can apply for future openings.

No suspects in two Lanark burglaries Prairie Advocate staff

LANARK — The Lanark Police Department is investigating two robberies that occurred during the evening of May 13 or early morning of May 14 at Eastland Motor Sports on state Route 64 and the Lanark Food Center on Broad Street in the downtown.

The robbers forced their way into vending machines, apparently using a drill, outside of both businesses and took money.

The burglaries remain under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 815-2447867.

HORTONVILLE, Wisconsin – William Russell Humburg, 74, of Hortonville, Wisconsin, passed away Thursday, May 19, 2016, at his residence.

Bill was born March 22, 1942, to the late William and Gertrude (Young) Humburg in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1945, his family moved to Miami, Florida. Bill graduated from North Miami High in 1960.

After graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy.

He met his first wife, Virginia Berrens, while at Great Lakes Naval School. Bill met his wife, Janet Smith, in 1980. They married July 11, 1981.

Bill worked at Curwood for many years as a department superintendent.

He retired in 2000 to run his glass shop, Tigerose Glass, full time. Bill loved teaching stained glass classes and doing glass etchings for homes and businesses.

In 2004, Bill and Janet moved to Mount Carroll, to spend time with grandkids.

He achieved his dream of spending winters in Florida, where his mother lived.

For 10 years, they enjoyed winter in the Riviera Resort on the St. Johns River, where they went boating, fishing and golfing. They went on cruises with his childhood friends, Dave and Margie.

Bill was a true extrovert.

He loved to talk to people, whether he knew them or not. After 10 minutes, you knew his life story. Bill was a veteran, having served for 6 years aboard Naval picket ships. His ship blockaded Havanna Harbor.

Bill was patriotic. He was a “gung ho” Navy! He participated in Memorial

Bill loved to drive his motorcycle. They took many trips, like trips with the Wolf River Motorcycle Club. On his last ride, when he could still drive, he said it made him feel free.

Bill loved animals. Janet and Bill took in many cats.

His favorite was his black cat, BC. While guys at the resort walked their little dogs, Bill walked BC. For 2 years, Mary and Moses McGlone and daughters, Jenna, Annie Lucy and Mary Joy, helped make his final days enjoyable.

Thank you to ThedaCare Hospice for the loving care and the friends who came to visit.

Bill is survived by his wife, Janet; children, Bill (Angela) Humburg, Oshkosh, Wisconsin, Kim Humburg, Waunakee, Wisconsin and Tammy (Peter) Santi, Algonquin; seven grandchildren: Marin, Hannah, Devin, Coleman, Tyler, A.J. and Sam; sister, Karen (Milt) Parkin and mother-in-law, Ardene Smith. Bill is further survived by other relatives and friends.

Bill is preceded in death by his parents, William and Gertrude, and his father-inlaw, Evan Smith.

A memorial service for Bill will be at 11 a.m.

Saturday, June 4, at First Congregational United Church of Christ in New

London, Wisconsin, with the Rev. Greg Watling officiating. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. at the church. Full military honors will be held.

Lanark, Milledgeville on opposite sides of fence In Lanark, residents who want to raise chickens now must submit a form provided by the zoning officer, buy a $20 permit for a coop, which is required to house the birds, and a $10 yearly license.

The coop cannot be bigger than 250 square feet or taller than 8 feet high, and must be covered.

If the license is not renewed, or is terminated, the chickens must be removed.

The ordinance also allows other livestock, including horses, mules, cattle, sheep and goats, as long as the resident has at least 1 1/2 acres of land, and the animals do not disturb the neighbors.

Two Carroll County villages have amended ordinances – one to allow chickens within city limits, the other to ban them.

The Lanark City Council voted 4-2 Tuesday to amend city code to allowing livestock, including a flock of up to six chickens, inside city limits.

A day earlier, in front of a packed crowd, the Milledgeville Village Board also revised its ordinance.

It, too, allows chickens within city limits – as long as they are 1,000 feet from neighboring homes, which, in effect, will keep most residents chickenless.

Lanark Alderman Ken Viglietta voted against it.

“The vast majority of the people in my ward asked me to vote against this. I voted with all of those people in mind. My commitment is to the people who elected me.”

The new ordinance is the same as nearby Shannon’s, Mayor Jim Huggins noted.

Nick Pontnack, a Lanark native who has four chickens, said he is thankful the council listened to the residents.

“I’m so proud of my community for working through this in such a professional manner,” he said.

In addition to the distance limitation – 1,000 feet is slightly less than three football fields – the Milledgeville revision, which passed unanimously, also limits a flock to four chickens. Roosters and other fowl, such as turkeys, ducks, quail or geese, are prohibited, and owners must pay a yearly fee of $25. Violators can be fined anywhere between $30 and $500 per offense.

At the beginning of the meeting, the ordinance had called for chickens to be at least 100 feet away from neighbors. Board member Bill Stage called for the extension to 1,000 feet.

“Not that I have a problem with anyone that wants chickens, but I’m going by

the consensus of what the people in town are saying,” Stage said. “Let’s add a zero to the 100 feet.”

The previous ordinance did not limit the size of a flock nor did it require a fee.

Before the vote, village President Galen Wirth gave those in attendance 10 minutes to speak to the board – 5 for those in support of the revision, and 5 for opponents.

Resident Larry Spencer was an opponent.

“I don’t think we should have any chickens or poultry,” Spencer said. “We are talking about a filthy, dirty bird that has so many diseases. I don’t want my grandchildren playing in my yard with possible feces from chickens.”

Marc Gravert, of Morrison in Whiteside County, gave an outsider’s perspective.

“Why do chickens strike fear in the hearts of some of these people?” asked Gravert, who said he has raised chickens since he was a child. “My chicken coop is probably 100 feet from my house and I don’t have a chicken smell. Many cities in this state, bigger than yours, are allowing chickens.”

All board members said the residents to whom they have spoken all object to chickens within the village’s limits.

“This is a dead issue as far as I’m concerned,” board member Gary Geirnaeirt said. “The community doesn’t want them, and I don’t want them, either.”

• Carroll County Sheriff Jeff Doran told the board his office’s computer system is nearing the crash stage and will require attention next year. He also said there is a 911 merger proposal underway with the Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Department that will offset some of those projected costs.

MOUNT CARROLL – A proposal by Timber Lake Playhouse in Mount Carroll to add a Class H category to the Carroll County liquor ordinance was approved Thursday by the Carroll County Board.

The Playhouse approached the county about being able to use local brew house, Galena Brewing Company, to create, bottle and label beer with a Timber Lake theme, then sell it and serve it at the Mount Carroll venue during performances.

Plans are to expand the product line to wine next year. The facility is not asking to be a package liquor store, but needs licensing in a new category that would fit its needs.

A Class H license authorizes the retail sale on-site, of beer and wine for consumption on the premises, provided that the alcoholic content of the beverages does not exceed more than 14 percent of alcohol by volume that is labeled specifically with the license holders’ business name on the stateapproved label. An annual fee of $750 was set.

MILLEDGEVILLE — When you begin high school as a freshman, everyone tells you how fast the next four years will go, but somehow the time flies by even faster than they predict. Such was the sentiment in Milledgeville over the weekend as the town’s high school Class of 2016 gathered one more time to walk the halls and march into the gym for graduation ceremonies.

“This is super fun even though it’s kind of sad,” said Milledgeville Class of 2016 Valedictorian Morgan Smith. “We are all going in different directions now and I’m excited to see what we all do in the future.”

Smith will attend the University of Iowa and study human physiology on a pre-med track with a minor in Spanish.

She said they’ve been together through the elementary and intermediary grades and they are a close group.

“We’ve spent a lot of time together, especially this last year, and when it’s all said and done I think

MOUNT CARROLL — The consensus of the parents and coaches who spoke to address the idea of West Carroll joining the IHSA Class 2A in wrestling was a resounding “no” at the district’s May Board of Education meeting.

There was concern about the potential of the district extending its middle school wrestling co-op with Chadwick-Milledgeville into the high school, and though this issue was not an agenda item for the meeting, several parents and coaches spoke out about the issue.

The main contention was if the district were to enter a co-op with Eastland and Chadwick-Milledgeville, it would place West Carroll in the 2A conference, due to the aggregate numbers of students involved in the three districts, which is a much more competitive conference that the current 1A status.

Coach Jeff McIntyre said that as things are structured now, West Carroll “would not be competitive in a 2A system.” He also said that the added amount of road time would very likely make the athletes tired and unable to effectively compete.

Cory Alljets, father of a wrestler, said that he felt this move was a “rocket step up,” and that without proper facilities or a wrestling room, competing at the 2A level would simply not work.

Assistant Coach Steve Ramirez said it would be preferable to take in the four students from Eastland rather than the one from Milledgeville because it had been his understanding that this move would not place the district in 2A. “Sometimes the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few,” he said. Whatever the situation, he said he was not in favor of anything that would place West Carroll in the 2A Conference.

Superintendent Craig Mathers said that this matter was not an agenda item nor had it been brought before the board as an item. He acknowledged there had been a comment made by an Eastland school official in a newspaper article and a letter of inquiry about the topic had been sent by Eastland. He said nothing had been done by the Chadwick-Milledgeville Board or district.

They’ve been a part of two state trophies in softball, four state trophies for music, they’ve staged great musicals, and just today we’ve become regional champions in baseball. We all have a lot to celebrate and we wish them well.”

Milledgeville High School Principal Brian Maloy echoed those sentiments and added a quick look into the future for the next year.

“These are great kids and they will be successful in anything they do,” said Maloy. “They work hard and have ethics and morals; that’s all you can ask from a kid.

“They have a good chemistry,” Maloy said.

While he concedes that the high school achievement levels could not match that success, he notes that the change in the test that measures achievement makes it impossible to supply statistics past 2012 or 2013, due to lack of relevant data. “The negative of the West Carroll School District is that we continue to lose kids, just like every other district around here,�

Mathers said. The district enrollment has shrunk from a high of 1,500 to just over 1,000 in 10 years.  The attendance rate when Mathers took over was between 89 and 90 percent, but the district has “been pushing 95 percent� in all the years since. He credits a Carroll County truancy protocol committee he helped spearhead with Judge Val Gunnarson, County Board member Ron Preston, and representatives from the Carroll County Sheriff’s Department.

Through this protocol, students and their parents can be fined if they do not attend school. “I can’t teach them if they are not here,� he says.

District unity

Mathers says he thinks Mount Carroll, Thomson and Savanna were starting to come together when he first arrived, and credits Lemon for “doing some great things to bring them in place.�

Mathers was told by a community leader that his first year was the first time that people in the stands didn’t count how many athletes were playing from each community.

However, he thinks that the attempted sale of the Intermediate School building has “broken down some of the successes that we’re having bringing the three districts together.�

Coming into a consolidation was nothing new to Mathers.

He arrived in Forreston when it, too, was in year four of its consolidation.

He and Lemon tried a similar technique to bind communities together by painting the schools in the new school colors.

Mathers says that an important marker will occur in 2 years at West Carroll: A graduating class that had never known anything but West Carroll as a school district. Conventional wisdom is that it takes 20 years for a consolidation “to hit home,� he says.  Mathers said the kids are not the issue when it comes to accepting district unity.  “The kids have accepted it,� he says. “It’s the adults that are still fighting the battle.�

Today it’s more balanced, he feels; while many parents are still fighting the battle, many acknowledge it’s one of the best things that could have happened. But it’s difficult to offer classes that will keep kids competitive at the next level if there are only a handful in each class, he says.

The future

For the future of West Carroll, Mathers says, “I think they are going to struggle financially until the State of Illinois decides that education is important. ... A kid that goes to school in West Carroll, or Peoria, or Bloomington, is just important as a kid that goes to school in Chicago.

“If I had a magic wand that I could make anything happen? ... You have a mandate from the State of Illinois, but you also should have a mandate from parents to get kids college or career-ready by the time they graduate from a high school. “In a perfect world, I would see a Carroll County High School, not a Carroll County district. Let your towns continue to have their identities, keep your K-8 kids at home in their communities, but find a way to put your high school kids in one location.� This, he says, would provide kids better educational opportunities.

For example, West Carroll is at a point where it may no longer be able to offer both chemistry and physics every year, simply due to low numbers of potential students. Mathers said if other county schools were aligned with the district, those numbers might well be large enough to warrant the expense involved to offer the classes. As to further consolidation in the region, Mathers says he thinks the state will probably force it, and in a way has been trying for years to force it by not supplying state aid. But, the voters would still have to give their approval.

Mathers’ successor will be High School Principal Adam Brumbaugh. “Adam’s got a lot of energy and passion to do this job,� Mathers said. “I think he’ll do well because he really does want the district to succeed; he’s got a vested interest, with four kids. I guess the best advice I could give him is the same advice people used to give me: Don’t be

afraid to ask questions.� He encourages Brumbaugh to take advantage of the network of people who have already done the job. “You’ve got good people here who care about what they do.�  He credits the office staff and department heads for their knowledge and dedication. Never a micromanager, Mathers says he was told a long time ago, “You hire the best person and get out of their way.�

About the boards he’s worked with, Mathers says, “I do believe their passion is for kids, otherwise they wouldn’t be doing this. I had two good presidents (David Boyd and Mike Highland), now a third one in Jerry Anderson.

They were always open to discuss matters that came up.�

What’s it all about He and his wife, Judy, live in Galena. Mathers said his retirement plan is to stay in the area for the next 5 years, and then when grandson Jackson hits kindergarten age, they plan to relocate to Bonita Springs, Florida, to work at the Liberty Youth Ranch, a community supported orphanage that is always in need of tutors to help teach their kids.  “Because this organization had taken ownership of these kids, you have some real success stories.� He says he and Judy “fell in love with the place.�

Mathers says he is determined to remain active after retirement. “You can be as busy or as bored as you want,â€? he says. “It’s your choice.â€? Â

With the time constraints and pressures of the job behind him, he says he’ll have more time for exercise. “I’ve got a feeling I’m going to lose 20 pounds in the first 6 months.�

He says he started working 40 hours a week when he was just 14 years old to pay for his college education. “I grew up in this environment. I was a kid with holes in my jeans. ... My grandparents were farmers, didn’t have a lot, but they did teach you the ethics of hard work. “These walls aren’t here in order for me to have a job. These walls aren’t here for my teachers to have a job. They’re here to educate kids. And if we ever lose that focus, then we need to get out of this business.�

June CCFB library programs around Carroll County

A

s the school year has come to an end, so has our first full year of the Carroll County Backpack program. I want to take a quick moment to thank those who donated to the program.

The Young Leaders gave a portion of the Harvest for All to fund the program.

Eastland Feed and Grain partnered up with us to begin the program and have contributed greatly. Both Tee Lee Popcorn and Neumiller Farms donated products they grow to be included in the weekly bags. 1st Farm Credit was also a big sponsor for this first year.

We thank all of them as we were able to make a difference in the lives of 70 children this past school year. A big thank you also goes to the Illinois Corn Marketing Board and the Illinois Farm Bureau which provided a grant to provide meat in the bags for the children.

Friday is the Value of Corn in Livestock Feed program here at the office. As food prices rise, the tendency is to blame the farmer and his corn price. But did you know that even when corn prices

were at $7.50 a bushel, there is only 60 cents of corn in that pound of hamburger you just bought for supper?

It takes around 4.67 pounds of corn to produce one pound of beef. Using those numbers, there is only 15 cents worth of corn used in producing a quarter pound hamburger. For a pound of pork it equates out to 48 cents per pound. Even that six pack of pop only has 17 cents worth of corn, in the whole six pack!

The Carroll County Farm Bureau Women’s Committee, with a grant from the Illinois Corn Marketing Board, will again be selling hamburgers for 15 cents — that’s right, only 15 cents — which is the value of corn in that hamburger. If corn prices rise 10 percent, a pound of beef would only increase 6 cents.

Stop by the Carroll County Farm Bureau office on Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and celebrate National Hamburger Day a couple days early with a 15 cent burger, that’s right, the value of corn in that burger.

The Driver’s Seat A thought from Carroll County Transit:

Well, here we are, one year since I started at Carroll County Transit. It doesn’t seem that the time has gone so fast. I am reminded what my Grandmother used to say: The older you get the faster it goes. There has been much to learn, such as where each facet fits within a calendar year.

It’s been an eventful year as well. I have spent the year meeting riders, attending meetings, walking or driving vehicles in parades, singing for events (in my past life I was a music teacher) and spending time promoting Carroll County Public Transportation. Notice I added the word Public.

We are still known as Carroll County Transit, but in spending time in the communities of Carroll County, I have found that not everybody realizes

that we are a public transportation system. If you are a resident of Carroll County, you can ride.

Almost 20 years ago CCT had just been for seniors (60+) and disabled. Then in 2011, that changed.

Recently, CCT has also been trying to further meet the needs of Carroll County residents by more efficiently using our service hours of 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Currently, if you have an appointment scheduled in the early afternoon (noon to 2 p.m.) out of county, we have added driver and vehicle availability.

In-county availability can be met with appointments as late as 4:30 p.m. The office is open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., so please schedule rides and cancellations during those hours.

The second and fourth Tuesdays are still scheduled days to take passengers to

Rockford. CCT has also utilized another county and the Amtrak service to get a passenger into Chicago.

Even though CCT is unable to move mountains, stop natural disasters, or put out forest fires, we will do our best to serve the transportation needs of all the citizens of Carroll County. We have a friendly group of drivers that have wonderful door to door service and comfortable, reliable buses that get you where you’re headed.

Activities at the Senior Center Recycling Senior Service earns a great deal of money each year through the efforts of those who gather newspapers and aluminum cans in their respective communities, and those who bundle the paper and haul it to the local distribution centers. We need more help with this project. The “gathering” people work just a couple of hours a month in their respective communities.

The “bundlers” work at the Senior Center just about any day when they have an hour or two to spare. And the “loaders/haulers” help load and/ or haul the papers to the distribution center.

Seniors Around the County GRO – Great River Outreach The Great River Outreach offers a delicious meal, friendship, and good conversation at two locations. In Savanna, food is served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, at the former Chestnut Park School near Poopy’s, south of town on state Route 84.

In Mount Carroll, food is served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Carroll United Methodist Church. Any age

is welcome. Donations are accepted but not required.

Penny Von Essen cooks for both locations and food is brought to Mount Carroll.

Volunteers are involved in this endeavor. Why eat alone? Consider joining the group often!

THOMSON – A free lunch program for children through 12th grade is being offered 1 day a week, on a trial basis, starting June 8.

The program is being organized by Thomson Area Christian Outreach with the guidance and financial support of United Way of Whiteside County.

The free sack lunches – peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, 100 percent juice drinks, fresh fruit and other lunch items – will be available from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesdays through Aug. 10 at Thomson United Methodist Church, 1901 state Route 84.

This will be the 15th summer United Way has offered its free summer lunch program, “Let’s Feed Our Children.” With the addition of Thomson in Carroll County, and Coleta in Whiteside County, nine communities will be served, including Sterling, Rock Falls, Morrison, Tampico, Fulton, Prophetstown and Albany, all in Whiteside County.

Let’s Feed was meant to support families who get free and reduced meals during the school year,

but it’s open to any and all children, regardless of income, no questions asked.

The four small churches involved are Thomson and Argo Fay United Methodist, and York Baptist and York Community churches. They formed the outreach effort about 18 months ago, to combine their resources – time, money and people – to look for and address needs in Thomson and York townships, said Gwen Smith, one of the group’s founders.

Smith is the children’s librarian at Schmaling Memorial Public Library in Fulton, where she learned of the Let’s Feed program and brought the idea to her group.

Organizers asked for United Way’s help to get started – the agency is paying for the bulk of the food, which is being provided by the Sauk Valley Area Food Bank, and church members have donated peanut butter and jelly, which is also how the

program works in Whiteside County.

Many Thomson-area residents use the Fulton Food Pantry, which is United Way member, and so the cross-county partnership makes sense.

Organizers aren’t sure how many children might be served, Smith said. Usage will help them assess the need.

“This is just a trial, to see how it goes,” said Pam Martinez, United Way’s administrative assistant.

Free lunches also will be served Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, May 31 through Aug. 11, at First Reformed Church, 510 15th Ave. in Fulton, and Mondays through Fridays, May 31 through Aug. 11, at The Crave Building, 201 W. Market St. in Morrison.

Last year, more than 34,700 lunches were served in the seven towns over summer break. In 2014, it was almost 35,000, up from about 33,300 in 2013.

“It’s pretty special,” Randecker said. “It’s a whole team thing. We stayed positive; we could have easily just rolled over and lost that game in the fourth inning.”

The third-seeded Timberwolves (13-15) led 5-1 in the bottom of the sixth against the second-seeded Cougars (20-9), and 5-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh, but No. 8 hitter Tanner Giedd hit a one-out single to right field off Indian Creek reliever Austin Sommerfeld, scoring Payton Clouse from third.

The Cougars still had two on and one out, but Sommerfeld induced two pop-ups to force extra innings.

After the Timberwolves could only muster a walk in the eighth off Randecker – who was available after a light workload while tossing a no-hitter in a semifinal on Wednesday – the first three Eastland batters singled to start the eighth, including the winning hit by Randecker on a full count.

“It was an amazing ending,” Eastland Coach Weston Burkholder said. “It was a rough middle, I guess, [innings] two through five was a little gut-wrenching.

We started off good, the second inning we walked three and a big hit for them.

We looked a little scared after that, and around the sixth inning, I challenged them. I told them there’s six outs left in our season if you don’t do something. We strung together a couple hits together and scored three there in the bottom of the sixth with two outs. That was huge.”

Before his game-winning hit in the eighth, Randecker was 0-for-3, including making the final out of the seventh. “I was just thinking hit the ball and get it in the outfield,” Randecker said.

“We needed to move up those runners, and that’s what I was trying to do.”

Burkholder said he expects that kind of clutch attitude from the team’s only senior.

“He hit the ball hard two times,” Burkholder said.

“He’s been struggling here of late, but he’s coming on now. We’ve been working on his swing, and being a senior, he’s been working really hard because he knows he’s been struggling.

Hats off to that – most kids wouldn’t do that.”

The Milledgeville freshman pitcher, giddy in the aftermath of his team’s 6-3 victory against Newman in the championship game of the Class 1A AFC Regional on Saturday afternoon, made a beeline for head coach Kirk Engelkens just outside the dugout. The cooler of water left Kappes’s hands, and hit Engelkens in the back.

“You want to get me?

Come and get me,” a smiling Engelkens said.

Kappes obliged, dumping what was left in the cooler onto Engelkens as the rest of the Missiles cheered him on. It’s the first regional title for Milledgeville (11-13) since 2009, when Engelkens suited up for his alma mater as part of a co-op with Polo.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the guys,” Engelkens said.

“They kept battling and they kept fighting. This group of kids, no matter what I throw at them, they don’t complain. They just go out and do it. I could not be prouder of them.”

Kappes (1-1) earned his first varsity win. He allowed three runs, 10 hits and hit a batter in 6 1/3 innings, with seven strikeouts. Engelkens was torn between Kappes and Harrison Schmidt, the only senior on the team, to get the start, and went with the youngster.

“He texted me [Saturday] morning and said I was pitching,” Kappes said. “I got in the mindset right away that I was going to pitch. We saw them before, and I figured

we had a good chance at beating them. I was confident if I threw good curveballs, I could hang with them.”

Kappes ran into trouble in the bottom of the seventh.

He allowed three singles to load the bases, and Schmidt was summoned from left field to pitch. He allowed a fly ball to left from Nate Olson to drive in one run, but after walking KC Knack, Schmidt induced a pop fly that was gloved by second baseman Jack Munz for the final out of the game.

Newman (16-9) had the makings of a big inning.

Ethan Hafner led off with a single, then Luke Olson hit a rope into right-center field.

Milledgeville’s Cade Schave flagged it down, however, with a diving grab for the first out of the inning. “It was big,” Schave said. “It stopped them from getting their confidence up. I’m just glad we played tough D all around.”

The Missiles broke through in the third, however, with four runs. Dylan Alexander, John Oldman and Kappes began the inning with doubles, producing two runs.

With runners on second and third and two outs, Schave hit a grounder up the middle to score two more runs. The Missiles tacked on runs in the fourth on a sacrifice fly
