MOUNT CARROLL — Stephanie Samuels, pastry chef and proprietor of Angel Food in Mount Carroll, is not only an active vendor at the Mount Carroll Farmers Market, but also the chairman of this year’s market.

Technically, the market was to have started Saturday, but it was simply too early for many vegetable vendors.

“So we are having a pre-market weekend this Saturday, and May 21, then we’ll have the big kick-off May 28 during Mayfest,” Samuels said. “This will appease the vendors who want to set up early, then go full-out in 3 weeks.

“We are always looking for more vendors. The bigger variety we have, the more customers we can attract. We’ll have some things aimed at attracting more local families, too. We already have a strong base of loyal market supporters who come every week and appreciate what we are doing. That’s great, but I want more people!”

She said there also is a strong base of vendors, who offer a wide variety of items besides fresh vegetables, like the ladies of Loren Valley Gardens. They produce a bit of everything, offering not only beautiful plants, but baked goods, bird house gourds and trees.

MOUNT CARROLL — She’s not just a baker: Stephanie Samuels is a pastry chef, instructor, consultant, and food stylist.

For 10 years, she operated a bakery and cafe on the north side of Chicago, on Montrose and Ashland, called Angel Food Bakery.

“It was a great neighborhood, a great community, and I poured by heart and soul into it,” Samuels said. “I had wonderful customers. I lived two blocks from the mayor, who was a customer, I got a lot of press, was on six Food Network shows, and great TV coverage.

“But I had to close it. The city of Chicago does not make it easy for small business.

There are permit after permit after permit, all with fees. I wanted to maintain a certain level of quality, and fresh, unique ingredients are costly. It just got to the point where I had to make a change, which was produce, depending on what’s in season. And she knows that it doesn’t matter if there are 3 or 4 bakers, or 5 vegetable vendors: Competition brings more customers, because they want to see more items.

“It’s fun to compare, people talk to each other, and word spreads,” Samuels said. “My main goal is to get the community out. We’ve got all these resources right here, so if you want this, you have to come and support it, otherwise, the vendors won’t come.

They’ll go where the customers are.”

Samuels said she has the Mount Carroll Public Library on board to host a library tent weekly, with events like story time for kids.

“Librarian Pam Naples is amazing,” she said. “She’s non-stop programming, she’s so good! She’s one

I’m still close friends with many families that I served, my staff met and created friends there and are still maintaining those relationships. To me, that’s the greatest thing that could have happened. I succeeded in that.”

She met her partner, Dan Brinkmeier, many years ago. He worked at the Field Museum for more than 30 years, but grew up in Mount Carroll. He decided to move back and start helping with the family farm about 3 years prior to her closing the bakery.

“When I closed my shop, I was really lost,” Samuels said. “Moving out here gave me a chance to get some distance from the reminders, my former customers – I couldn’t move away from it. So I moved to Mount Carroll, jumped in, and wanted to see what it was like to take some time and reinvent myself.”

of the main people in town that keep things going, and the tent will be a way to attract more families to the market.”

Street musicians have always been an attraction at the market, but they’ve never had a set location, Samuels said.

“They’ve sat on the wall of the courtyard, and it’s always been more informal.

But this year, we’ll have a tent, front and center, right on the street with the other vendors, with tables and chairs for those who want to purchase some snacks, and enjoy the music in a comfortable setting.”

She has also discussed more children’s activities with Heather Houzenga, local artist and proprietor of Now and Zen Gallery, one block west of the farmers market on Market Street.

“Maybe just a bucket of chalk so kids can sit

and draw all over, the space, so their parents can walk around the market,” Samuels said. “They can draw vegetables, or draw signs for the vendors in front of their tents. It’s fun and the kids get involved.”

From Samuels’ vantage point, Angel Food will be a bit more focused this year, as she wants to offer more “interactive” food, prepared on the spot, like grilled cheese sandwiches featuring all local products and her homemade bread.

She said there is a huge retirement community in northwestern Illinois that has moved from the city and suburbs, still wishing to buy some of the same things they used to buy back home.

“It’s not as easy here; you do have to travel a little bit farther to get certain items,” Samuels said. “The more we can show them that we have

Stewards of the Upper Mississippi River Refuge and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are hosting Refuge Golf Cart tours that travel through the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge.

The tours are free and open to all ages, and are held the the third Saturday of every month from May through September.

She said her involvement as a vendor at the farmers market was a way for her to create her own identity, let people know who she was, and stay creative. And the community aspect of it was important.

“I could experiment, see what sells out here, introduce people to some new items, which has been really fun,” she said.

“It also gave me a little income, and took a little over a year to shed the identity of the bakery.

It was the summer that Molly’s was opening, and I was coming out a few days a week, consulting with them and helping in the kitchen. It was a really fun project. I love being at the start-up of things, and I’m thrilled to see how well they’re doing.”

Now that she has taken

over running the farmers market, and has made a name for herself as a vendor, Samuels said she is taking her culinary background and moving ahead, still being of service, but in a different way.

Initially, she offered a huge variety of her baked goods, but soon realized, “I can’t keep making all this stuff!”

She kept track of her best sellers, like her homemade granola, which keeps a dedicated group of followers happy.

“I do a rugelach, kind of like a streudel, a European pastry, with cream cheese dough, apricots and nuts — delicious! I wasn’t too sure in the beginning, but that sells really well.”

“More often than not, I was surprised by the fact that my customers wanted to try the more unique items, because they are not that prevalent out here. I sold a ton of cookies, but cookies are cookies! But it’s really fun to see the unique items so popular.”

She knows that

competition is good, but that a market doesn’t always want to have the same products.

“So that people can come and get a breakfast sandwich, sit and enjoy it,” Samuels said. “I’ll also be doing some demonstrations with local gardener Kate Wood, featuring some of her produce in my sandwiches every week, or recipe demos using her produce and giving away recipe cards. We’re doing more to attract more people.

“As a new community member, I want to live in a vibrant community. I’m enjoying it, and I’m putting myself in the middle of it all, doing as much as I can.”

The Morrison Community Hospital Doll and Teddy Bear Clinic, from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, is designed to let children and their parents see EMS personnel “operate” in a less critical setting.

“Bring in your teddy bear, favorite stuffed animal or doll to be checked out at the hospital,” MCH Marketing Director Mick Welding said.

Children bring their broken teddy bears and dolls to the hospital (though not the emergency department) and watch as EMS specialists and volunteers repair the toys and restore them to health.

“It’s amazing how many of them pull through!”

Welding said. “While there, kids could even get

Village board still crafting new chicken rules Ordinance changes likely to be proposed on Monday

FULTON – The building looks like a typical shopping to open its doors will be anything but typical.

The only medical marijuana dispensary in the Sauk Valley is nearly complete.

The Dispensary, at 1801 16th Ave., will be open for public viewing at 5 p.m.

May 17. The 3,150-squarefoot facility will open soon, pending approval of a state inspection. It will be a place for people with a stateissued permit to purchase medical marijuana.

The Dispensary, a place where local patients with state permits can purchase medical marijuana, will be opening soon in the center of a new shopping center at state Routes 84 and 136 in Fulton. It has issued 56 of the 60 dispensary permits in districts determined by population size. There are 37 dispensaries operating, Dreger said.

“The other dispensaries

are in different stages of construction,” Dreger said.

“There are a lot of hoops to jump through in order to get a dispensary.”

There will be 21 marijuana cultvation centers, one in each Illinois State Police district.

The District 1 cultivation center will be in Hillcrest, a village of 1,000 people on the north edge of Rochelle in eastern Ogle County.

Patients with one of 39 conditions and diseases, and with a doctor’s signature, can use medical marijuana in Illinois. Those conditions include cancer, glaucoma, HIV, heptatitis C and multiple sclerosis.

“We are all very excited about it,” Fulton City Administrator Ed Cannon

said of The Dispensary.

“We are all in favor of it, and the city has been behind this 100 percent. Every vote before the City Council was unanimous to support this.”

The next phase for the shopping center is to rent the commercial units to each side of The Dispensary.

“This is a good opportunity for Fulton to see some new retail and some new jobs,” Cannon said.

The Dispensary is represented by Canna Consultants, a medical Chicago.

Dreger said The Dispensary is not hiring, but said people who are interested in working at the facility can apply for future openings.

Riley Sullivan took the loss, allowing three runs (all earned), eight hits and two walks in six innings. She struck out one batter.

Morrison 12, Riverdale 1 (5 inn.): Lauren Vos tripled twice and knocked in three runs as the Fillies run-ruled the Rams in Port Byron. Brooke Stralow also drove in three runs for Morrison, while Emma Melton doubled, singled, scored two runs and knocked in one.

Hinckley-Big Rock (51) and AFC (5). Relay wins were in the 400 (51.88), 800 (1:50.31), 1,600 (4:33.31) and 3,200 (10:48).

Milledgeville was paced by Sam Johnson, who won the shot put (32-9) and discus (103-8).

May 5 NUIC Meet: Rebecca events as the Missiles took second in the NUIC Meet in Milledgeville. Galena/ East Dubuque/River Ridge won the title with 111 points. while Milledgeville/Eastland scored 102. Waite won the 100 (12.88), 200 (26.46) and 400 (1:00.52), and she also took second in long jump. Samantha Johnson was second in shot put with a throw of 33-9, and the Milledgeville 800 and 1,600 relay teams also took second;
