Food and fun at Day (and night) of Possibility The Transformers, Lanark’s MAPPING group that conducts event planning and downtown beautification in the community, hosted a thank-you cookout at Saturday’s Day of Possibility. Held at The Special Touch, other businesses along state Route 64 joined the activities, visiting with nearly 80 guests during the 3-hour event.

By MICHAEL MILLER For Prairie Advocate ELIZABETH – Jo Carroll Energy is offering an innovative way for electric customers to power their homes, with the construction and introduction of its solar farm on three-quarters of an acre behind the company. To help fund the project, Jo Carroll electric customers can buy subscriptions for capacity credits, and will receive a monthly bill credit for their panel’s output. The Subscribers’ bills will be credited based on the actual production of the farm for 20 years. The estimated return is $48 to $50 per panel per year, so participating members are expected to break even over the life of the project. The farm is not subsidized by members who do not participate, and the price of subscriptions and the credits are based on the costs of the project. Solar panels – 456 of them, at 275 watts each – make up the array, and have a combined capacity of 126.5 kilowatts. Jo-Carroll Energy Senior

It’s a good idea to have a balanced mix so that you don’t have all of
your eggs in one basket.” There are other reasons why customers would support this project, he said. “The way we have it priced includes everything you would ever need to worry about: Taxes, insurance, operations and maintenance, the land . . . costwise, this is extremely competitive, because we are able to build it on a utility scaled version
renewable energy. We take care of the maintenance, if anything goes wrong with, all of those things are priced into the cost,” Buros said. The payback for customers’ investments are based on 12 cents a kilowatt hour for their prorated share of the solar farm, on a monthly basis, so that becomes a direct bill credit. So far, 27 members are participating in this option, which has been available since January. The option is “very prevalent,” Buros said. “We’re certainly not Minnesota, Wisconsin do a lot of them, you see a lot of co-ops offering this option for their members.” Everything in the array is made in the United States, with all construction being done by local contractors. If there is continued interest among the members, the farm will expand in time, Buros said.

llen Derrer, Carroll County Farm Bureau member, recently received a check for $500 for having a Rollover Protection System installed on his 1965 3020 John Deere tractor. The rebate was offered by the Illinois Farm Bureau Quality of Life Action Team as its 2014-15 state project. Tractor overturns continue to be the leading cause of farm-related deaths in the U.S. ROPS are the only proven devices to protect a tractor operator in the event of an overturn. They are 99 percent effective when used with a seat belt; the survival potential without one is 20 percent. Today, only about 60 percent of farm tractors have a ROPS. The Quality of Life Action Team wants to increase that number, and has created a ROPS Incentive Program for Illinois Farm Bureau members. IFB members can apply for a cash incentive tors with a factory-built, dealer-installed ROPS and seat belts. To be eligible, the applicant must be a current Farm Bureau member; use the tractor in production agriculture; have a factory
tion structure available that ROPS manufacturer for the tractor model and installed by an authorized dealer; and submit a tractor that did not have a ROPS originally. Only one tractor per farm can be rebated during the program year. This program will help keep people safer on the farm by offsetting the cost of installing ROPS on older tractors still in operation. The amount awarded will vary, and will be received after the ROPS installation is complete, and the copies of paid receipts are submitted by the tractor owner. MOUNT CARROLL – Breakfast and lunch will be free next year for all West Carroll students in the primary, elementary and middle schools. The West Carroll Board of Education recently approved participation in the United States Department of Agriculture Community Eligibility Provision for the 2015-16 school year. cussed in February, when Superintendent Craig Mathers said the plan had been deemed not economically sound, but that as the number of West Carroll students on the free and reduced program

Showcasing new tuition waivers, programs Open house set for Tuesday By TONY CARTON For Prairie Advocate FREEPORT — Highland Community College and Highland Community College Foundation will be offering more than $20,000 in new tuition waivers to students who register early for newly developed classes and programs for the fall semester. This new funding to be offered until June 30 is in addition to about $350,000 in scholarships that will be awarded through the foundation for the 2015-16 school year. “What’s New for You at Highland,” an open house, will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Student/Conference Center, at which faculty, staff,
educational and corporate partners will be on hand, to talk about the new and expanded programs, the waivers, student activities, and co-curricular organizations. A brief program will be held at 6 p.m. to preview the year ahead. “I think it is important that we are current with our curricula and align it carefully for transferability for those students that wish to transfer to a 4-year institution and perhaps ultimately to graduate school,” said Tim Hood, Highland’s executive vice president, who will replace President Joe M. Kanosky when he retires June 30. “The thing I enjoy most about community colleges, and particularly Highland, is that we are as wellpositioned as any institution of higher education to offer something for everyone.

With that, I mean we have programs to allow students earn a degree and move into the workforce within 1 to 2 years.” Hood stressed Highland’s value for those who are working and/or raising a family and don’t have time to travel to campus or to be a full-time student. “We would really like hybrid situations which allow students of all ages to have the online component, but then also have the personal face-to-face to go with it and complement it,” he said. “Online is great for many
students, but it is not for everyone. We offer modes of delivery of instruction that include entirely online that can be done anytime and anywhere during the time schedule of the course, hybrid, which is a combination of online and face-to-face and then, of course, traditional courses.” New programs to be introduced this fall include mass communication, hospitality management, and criminal justice. Expanding programs and divisions include agriculture, advanced manufacturing, early childhood education, automotive,

Predators will consume many insects over their lifetime. In addition to lady beetles, insects like minute pirate bugs, lacewing larvae, and hoover predators. The other type of natural enemies is parasitoids, which lay eggs on, in, or near their insect host. Once the eggs hatch, they enter the insect and consume it. Insects that act as parasitoids are primarily tiny “In addition to prey, many natural enemies need sources of pollen and nectar,” he added. “These sources are especially important for parasitoids, as well as the adult stages of insects with predaceous larvae. By planting plants that are attractive to these natural enemies, you can help encourage them to stick around.” Flowers that are good for attracting natural enemies usually are small, relatively open plants such as those in the carrot (Umbelliferae) and aster (Compositae) families. Plants in the carrot heads that are white or that provide good landing places for insects. “There are a number of herbs in this family such as dill, cilantro, fennel, and caraway that can be used,” Johnson said. “Avoid using

Many of these plants can rapidly spread if they are allowed to go to seed so it is a good idea to remove the seed heads before that happens.” Plants in the aster family made up of many small coreopsis are in this family and will help keep natural enemies around. “Just like in pollinator gardens, you want to plant clumps of plants that bloom at different times,” Johnson said. “This will provide natural enemies with sources of pollen and nectar throughout the growing season.” Other natural enemies such as praying mantises, wasps, ground beetles, and larger parasitic wasps are more mobile so their pres-
ence is less dependent on many will also use nectar and pollen as food sources. It is also important to avoid spraying pesticides on your plants. “After all, that’s what you are attracting the natural enemies for,” Johnson said. “It will take some time for pest populations so you may need to be patient and be willing to accept some damage to your plants. “With a little help from your natural enemies can help keep your pest prob-
lems under control,” he added. The University of Illinois Extension has many resources for gardener. The Master Gardeners offer a helpline throughout the growing season to help answer home horticulture questions. Master Gardeners are available from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday, Wednesday, Friday at 815-235-4125. Obituaries Ned A. Hartman
MORRISON – Ned A. Hartman, 83, of Morrison, died Saturday, May 2, 2015, at Rockford Memorial Hospital. Ned was born Feb. 22, 1932, in Chadwick, the son of Lee C. and Rhua M. (Leavens) Hartman. He married Nancy E. Thorp on Nov. 22, 1956, in Lansing. She preceded him in death on Feb. 4, 2001. Ned retired as an inspector with the Texas State ChemUniversity in College Station, Texas. He served his country in the United States Army. Survivors include one son, Andrew Hartman of Bryan, Texas; and several nieces and nephews. He also was preceded in death by his parents; son Michael Hartman; brother Lee Hartman Jr.; and sisters Norma Jeanne Jensen and Donna Appel. There will be a gathering of family and friends from noon to 2 p.m. Friday at the Chadwick American Legion in Chadwick. Cremation rites have been accorded. LANARK – Eva ”Jane” Barnes, 90, Lanark, died Wednesday, April 22, 2015, at Presence St. Joseph Center in Freeport, and reunited with her loving husband on their 71st wedding anniversary day. Jane was born on October 23, 1924, in Detroit, the daughter of Howard and Eva Belle (Schram) Ross. She has been residing at Heritage Woods in Freeport for the past 2 years. She worked at Economy Insurance, Freeport Memorial Hospital, Forster-Appelt and Gold Nugget Foods. She was a member of St. Wendelin Catholic Church and Ladies Society in Shannon. She enjoyed conversing with friends and neighbors, and keeping our feet warm with her knitted slippers. The love most deep in her heart was for all her children, grand and great-grand children, whom she was most proud of. She will be dearly missed by her loving family. Survivors include her children, Bill (Lynn) Barnes of Westland, Michigan, Curt (Connie) Barnes of Dixon, Bev (Gary) Dyson of Lanark, Keith (Melissa) Barnes of Middleton, Wisconsin, Kevin (Amy) Barnes of Lanark; daughter-in-law, Julie Barnes of Wheaton; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a great-great grandson; and dear friend J.R. Perez of Freeport. Preceding her in death were her husband, Ernie; her parents, a stepmother, three brothers, one sister, son, E.J.;

MOUNT CARROLL — The controversial 2014 school funding bill that took the “Robin Hood” approach to state aid is more than likely dead. With a new administration the future hold for adequate education funding? The state has reneged on its responsibility to school funding established by the General State Aid formula. For several years, the GSA formula, an equalization formula determined to adequately fund education in Illinois, has been prorated at 89 percent. During Gov. Pat Quinn’s tenure, claims were paid at 95 percent of the amount owed 2013 payments fell to just 89 percent of the claims.

Eastland’s Dunlap into Hall of Fame
Eastland varsity boys’ basketball coach Tony Dunlap was inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame on Saturday at the Ilinois State University Student Center in Normal. Dunlap has been coaching at Eastland since 1994, compiling a 411-174 record. He has led the Cougars to two fourh-place state four sectional championships, six regional championships, and eight conference championships. The Eastland School District in a news release said it is proud of Dunlap and the hard work of his assistant coaches, the student-athletes, parents, and “as always, the support of our great community.”
On April 29, Forrestville Valley school district hired Shannon Williams as its varsity volleyball coach and high school physical education teacher. Williams spent the past 6 years at the helm in Dakota and will replace Lori Wellington, who is retiring. At Dakota, Williams’ teams were 196-42, including a Class 1A state championship in 2011 and state 2014. Williams’ teams have always been known for being fundamentally sound and mentally tough, a trend she hopes to continue at Forreston. Williams has lived in the Forrestville Valley school district for the past 8 years and is welcomed by both teaching and coaching staffs. “We are very fortunate to have coach Williams living in our district,” Superintendent Sheri Smith said. “She truly cares for the success of all of her players and does a wonderful job of motivating her players to compete both physically and mentally at an elite level. We are looking forward to her bringing that mindset to Forreston. Little Sprouts shares the former Eastland Elementary School with Platinum Performance, a sports training facility owned and operated by Weston Burkholder. Little Sprouts is in the north end of the building. “Our community has been

SHANNON — Nationally recognized children’s author Jim Aylesworth spent the day with Eastland Elementary students Thursday, incorporating sounds and humor with his stories, while encouraging students to read more often. A gifted teacher who taught in Hinsdale for 25 years, Aylesworth, of Chicago, is the author 35 children’s books, and is working on the 36th. “My Grandfather’s Coat” earned the 2015 Sydney Taylor Award, and his books have been listed on Publisher’s Weekly’s and School Library Journal’s Best Books of 2014, as well as the Illinois Reads List for 2014.

High school Student Leadership participants recognized By TONY CARTON For Prairie Advocate FREEPORT – A yearlong effort at self-actualization moved to the next level for nearly 300 students from 13 area high schools at the 18th annual Servant Leadership Recognition Ceremony April 26 at Highland Community College. Servant Leadership encourages and promotes compassionate leadership. It is based on the concept that leaders are also servants and that the servant aspect has the highest priority to ensure that the needs of others are being served. “We each have the ability to see the needs around us,” program coordinator Kim Pool said. “Even the blind see there are needs, and so our program’s motto, ‘To change the world we must touch the world,’ begins with us seeing the needs.” Everyone has the choice to move forward and make a difference with those needs or just observe them. “The students at today’s recognition ceremonies did not just observe,” she said. “There were many projects done for people who have cancer, diabetes and a number of issues. And, instead of walking by and saying, ‘I see the need, but I don’t think I can make a difference,’ these students moved to try and make a difference, and I want to encourage each one of us to do the same thing.” The eight-member team from Eastland High School, mentored by Kimberly Haverland, made and distributed comfort baskets for cancer patients and participated in the Servant Leadership “Hearts and Hands for Hunger/One Meal” regional project, which provided nearly 20,000 meals for area food banks and packaged and shipped about 105,000 meals to Liberia and Haiti. The Eastland group exceeded its goal of providing 30 comfort baskets, and more than doubled its goal of sponsoring and feeding 1,250 children through the regional project. “The mother of one of the girls in our group has cancer,” Eastland senior Shea Dobish said. “When she was in chemo, the clinic gave her a basket with a blanket, a puzzle, a water bottle and some other things, so we decided that we were going to make some of those baskets.” The Eastland students books, writing materials, candies and other items for an area clinic. They also staged a bingo night and raised $450 for the Hearts and Hands/One Meal regional project.

than what we originally set out to do,” Woessner said. “Beyond meeting our goals, we’ve strengthened our leadership skills and learned to work together as a team.” West Carroll mentor Kathy Stines attended the ceremonies with seven students who collected 400 pounds of plastic bottle caps to be recycled into a bench for the school grounds. “The bench is our group project,” Stines said. “We also did a cereal drive for the Savanna food pantry, and we did smaller fundraisers to collect money for the Hearts and Hands regional project.” The West Carroll regional project goal was to sponsor and feed 4,000 children, but they provide the resources necessary to feed nearly 6,500. West Carroll junior Gracie Rogers worked with Relay for Life for her individual project. “In October, we raised money at the walk/run and in February we hosted a Ladies’ Pamper Day, where we catered to area women,” Rogers said. “Both activities were pretty successful.” This project was the second year of activities with Servant Leadership for West Carroll senior Haley Appel. She said she had learned a lot about herself by helping others. “I found I was able to do
