Eastland High School students watched an unreal scene unfold before them Friday afternoon, as Lanark and Shannon firefighters tended to the victims of a two-vehicle crash at the high school. The scene was unreal because all of it – the crumpled cars, the blood and the bodies lying on the parking lot – was staged. The mock crash hopefully took the place of experience to teach students about the dangers of distracted driving in advance of the school’s prom activities Saturday. Good Samaritan plans weeklong celebration Prairie Advocate staff

MOUNT CARROLL – The Good Samaritan Society – Mount Carroll is celebrating National Nursing Home Week May 9-13 by giving thanks for those who live and work at the center and transform the community into a place where people feel loved, valued and at peace.

“During National Nursing Home Week, we celebrate and give special thanks for those who work in and live in long-term care centers,” Administrator Luann Brewington said.

“We also recognize the contributions from family members and community members. Their support goes a long way toward making our center a home for residents.”

In preparation of Nursing Home Week, staff members are participating in an Adopt a Window Box project by planting a variety of blooms in residents’ windows.

The Mount Carroll facility will celebrate with six daily special events from May 7 to May 13. On Saturday, a Mother’s Day celebration; Monday is Holland Day, with the crowning of a king and queen, and a special party with refreshments served by the Good Samaritan Society Auxiliary.

LANARK — Stacy Kalina is a nurse, and has seen her share of accident victims. She was one of the organizers of Friday’s mock accident at Eastland High School, helping coordinate efforts of the Lanark Fire Department, the school and the prom committee.

“It was probably one of ever done,” Kalina said.

Her daughter, Julianna Waugh, was the driver who was “killed” while texting and driving.

“It wasn’t hard to be the hysterical mom with all of the make-up and seeing her put in the body bag. The tears were real.”

The drill showed the effects of drinking and driving, and texting while driving. After watching the extrication performed by the Lanark and Shannon members of the Eastland crew from Life Line Helicopter, students went inside to watch as 15th Judicial Circuit Court Judge Val Gunnarsson sentenced one of the drivers and pointed out the emotional damage caused and the the drivers choice.

The third scene was a casket, and Kalina’s daughter, Julianna – “killed” at the scene, and who played a part in the blame because she was texting and driving – came out and talked to the students as if she were speaking from the grave, apologizing for the hurt she caused family and friends, and about the anger over being dead due to the choices made by her and the other driver.

Morrison residents see water, sewer bills go up

MORRISON – Morrison residents are paying more for some of their utilities.

The City Council approved an ordinance in January that raised base rates for water and sewer useage. That increase kicked in May 1, City Administrator Barry Dykhuizen said.

“We approved this increase a while back, but people may have forgotten about it,” Dykhuizen said.

The monthly sewer service charge has jumped from $12 to $19. The use portion of the sewer bill is unchanged at $8.45 per 1,000 gallons.

The monthly water service charge has increased from $16 to $18. The water use charge stayed at $6.55 per 1,000

MORRISON – The Grand Squares square dance club had a graduation party and dance for its new students April 18 at Odell Community Center in Morrison. Forty students and dancers from area clubs gathered to celebrate and dance.

Dancers who learned Plus Square Dancing from teacher and caller Don Sprosty during the winter months were Stan and Kay Bates, Katherine Hans, Margaret Mohr and Virgil and Mariann Pilola.

Those who learned modern Mainstream square dancing were Randy and Mary Rutledge, Patrick Bennett,

June Nicholson, Alyssa Nelson, Michaela Nelson and Les Nelson.

President Butch VanderSchaaf conducted the ceremony, and thanked all the people who helped create the Morrison Grand Squares 7 years ago. He also outlined the charities the club has donated to over the years.

City could see $4.5M savings on plant construction

SAVANNA – The Savanna City Council unanimously approved authorization to award the bid for the new wastewater treatment facility construction, contingent Economic Development Administration. Council had previously expressed its intent to award the bid to Williams Brothers Construction of Peoria, in the amount of $8.64 million.

Pepin said the loan had been approved, with 45 percent forgiveness on the loan, as well as on the wastewater treatment plan loan. She also said that on July 1, the city will have the option of making the loan a

Bullying still an issue in district, parent tells board

MOUNT CARROLL – Rachel Bork addressed the West Carroll school board April 20 regarding bullying in the district.

“It’s gotten to the point where my son is getting physically hit in school,” Bork said. She said her son attended the Primary School, and that this behavior had been going on for the past 3 years.

President Jerry Anderson said the issue had been brought up before, and that

the board and administration had been working on it.

“It’s not something that’s being overlooked, by no means,” he said.

Superintendent Craig Mathers said that the matter could not be discussed as fully in the open meeting, that it would be discussed in closed session.

In February, Rebecca Wilson told the board about both her nephew’s and her own son’s experiences with bullying in the district.

She said that bullying was

particularly an issue at the Middle School, and she acknowledged that West Carroll Middle School Principal Julie Katzenberger was “trying hard” to address the issue.

“It makes the kids feel really bad,” Wilson said.

“We are trying to teach our kids not to do this.”

Thomson building update

Village of Thomson President Vicki Trager asked the board if the memorial trees on the

Intermediate School grounds could be retained by the village, due to their She said there had been discussion of donating them to the Savanna Depot Museum.

Mathers will work with

the board to authorize the superintendent to work with Trager to accomplish this.

Mathers said that during the three-hour window for those interested in purchasing the Intermediate School building, no one appeared, though there have

been two requests for bid packets, and they have been sent out.

He said that all equipment in the building had been moved into the hallways, and the staff would review for potential use in their classrooms.
