Youth Group meetings may violate school board policy

Live music coming to city in summer

MOUNT CARROLL – The West Carroll Board of Education debated whether or not the activities of a local chapter of a youth group violated board policy during its April 20 meeting.

Board member Jamie McCombie said she had been contacted several times, by both district staff members and by parents, regarding what she called “religious activity” in the district. centered around the Fellowship for Christian Athletes, a student led organization, that High School Principal Adam Brumbaugh said is a global organization where youths and coaches meet for “fellowship.” He said that the organization requested permission to start a chapter at West Carroll, which was within their rights, and met with board policy. The group meets once a week before school in the library.

McCombie said she had been told the meetings were occurring during school hours. Superintendent Craig Mathers said one of the contentions was that they met during lunch hour, and McCombie said they were also occurring during study hall.

“If kids are getting together in study hall, they might be,” Brumbaugh said.

“But I can tell you their formal meetings are Thursday mornings,” generally between 7 and 7:50 a.m.

Board member Beverly Kilpatrick, attending by conference speaker phone,

asked if the group’s adult advisor was in the building at lunch time. Brumbaugh said that the advisor, Youth Pastor Ryan Strong from the Church of God in Mount Carroll, was a parent of children in the district and volunteered at the school as well. He said that Strong did come in during lunch hours and chatted with the students.

Kilpatrick questioned whether it was appropriate for Strong to meet with kids during lunch, which she said was “essentially instructional time.”

Brumbaugh said he wasn’t aware of when the pastor could be there during study hall, and McCombie said she’d been told the meetings took place in the media center. Brumbaugh said they only met there before school, and that Strong brought in treats for “anybody that wants one.”

“Don’t you see how that could be construed as coercion?” Kilpatrick said.

Board President Jerry Anderson disagreed.

“You’ve got a positive our school. How do you construe that as coercion? I don’t get that.”

“I don’t think he should be soliciting membership in this group,” Kilpatrick said. “If this is a student led group, then it’s a student led group, and it doesn’t need an adult to invite people to join it.”

Brumbaugh said that he didn’t think any information was being passed out during lunch. “He just comes in. ... I haven’t seen

him recruiting.”

Assistant High School Principal Joe Hansen recruiting occurring as far as he could see. He also said he’d never seen Strong in any study hall. “I see him at lunch time, once a week if that.”

Kilpatrick asked how they would feel if leaders from several different faiths came to lunch. “Is that what we need at a public school?”

Mathers said that, based on board policy, if one faith is allowed in, all had to be allowed, or all had to be banned. He added that the board could not favor one religion over another, but that they could determine if individuals were violating board policies and/or federal or state law.

Brumbaugh said that the group is not school sponsored. He said that he knew that several area churches contribute to the group.

Kilpatrick said she had no issue with the group meeting before school, but saw no

reason that they should be meeting during the school day, even if informally. She said she would be in favor of having the policy committee look at the policy and bring it back to the full board to determine if any violations were occurring.

Anderson said he was not interested in sending it back to the committee, as he had read the policy and was comfortable that it was not being violated.

“We just have to be sure that what the policy says is what’s being followed,” McCombie said.

Mathers said current board policy limits such activity to “instructional time,” but that lunch hour would not qualify as instructional time, though study hall meetings would. He said that current policy allowed students to use personal cell phones between classes and at lunch time.

The matter will be sent back to committee, consisting of McCombie, Kilpatrick and Mathers, who will then report back to the full board in May.

MOUNT CARROLL – A new twice-weekly concert series is coming to town this summer.

Will Mueller, a musician from Fulton, got the nod from the City Council to host Mount Carroll Music in the Square, from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursdays in June and July in the band stand on Main Street.

It will feature a mix of local and regional performers, and a sound system will be provided. Admission will be by donation, and proceeds will go to the performers.

“There are so many artists and musicians in Mount Carroll,” said Mueller, 61, who declined to release the names of the musicians and bands he has lined up..

“This will be something new for the city to enjoy.”

How long is too long on an Eastland school bus?

Council tweaking livestock ordinance; vote could come at May 3 meeting

LANARK – The Eastland School Board wants to limit the time spent for students riding school buses to an hour or less. But Superintendent Mark Hansen estimated that 4 to 6 students currently have total travel times of more than 60 minutes on a route.

The Transportation Committee presented several recommendations on proposals brought for consideration through the strategic planning process at the April 20 board meeting, where the board approved a motion to keep the goal of 60 minute route time limits, but not to make it a parameter or policy for route planning.

Eastland parent Dan Beyer of Lake Carroll told the board he is frustrated that his daughter rides the bus for approximately one hour and 15 minutes before and after school each day.

Hansen said that the Lake Carroll bus travels to Shannon to drop off elementary students before proceeding to Lanark to drop off junior and senior high school students.

“The decision to go to Shannon rather than Lanark

on the bus for less total time,” Hansen said.

That recommendation was based on several issues: additional costs associated with adding routes, instability and declines in state transportation funding, declining numbers of students residing outside of Lanark and Shannon, distance to satellite sites that sometimes makes a 60 minute travel limit impractical, shared routes to satellite sites that increase square miles traveled for student pick-up, unpredictability of route times given students moving in and out of the disand retaining a sufficient number of drivers and subs.

Hansen will work with Transportation Director Kyle Todd to evaluate route structures for possibly reducing time on the bus for students currently riding for more than 60 minutes.

The board approved continuing with the current practice of providing after school transportation to extra-

curricular practices, but not transportation back to Lanark.

“This has been the dissaves approximately $9,600 annually,” said Hansen, who reminded the board that state funding cannot be used to reimburse extra-curricular transportation costs.

The district will employ an aide to serve on the Early Step Pre-School bus route for 2016-17. Hansen said this is not a required expenditure and is not the current practice in other districts in the consortium.

“However, the committee felt that the additional adult on the pre-school bus could be helpful. The additional costs for this aide are estimated to be $8,000 annually and will have to be paid from local funds rather than from state grant funds.”

The committee also recommended, and the board with air-conditioning or WiFi due to costs and the limited use anticipated.

LANARK – Lanark residents soon could be gathering eggs in their own backyards.

The City Council is in the process of amending Section 5-1-12-A of the city code, which would allow people to have livestock, including chickens, within city limits.

About 20 residents who attended the April 19 meeting, and some board members, said the proposed requirements are too strict, Mayor John Huggins said.

The ordinance requires residents who want to raise chickens to submit a form, provided by the city clerk, that includes a drawing of the proposed location of the coop and signatures from the applicants’ neighbors.

A license to raise chickens would cost $50.

The chicken yard or coop would need to be in the back yard, at least 10 feet away from property lines and at least 30 feet away from any neighboring house, apartment or business.

The maximum size of a coop would be 12 feet on a side and 6 feet tall.

If the license is not renewed or is terminated, the property owner would have 30 days to remove the coop and get rid of the chickens.

The ordinance also would allow horses, mules, cattle, sheep or goats, as long as the resident has at least

1 1/2 acres of land, and the animals do not disturb the neighbors.

It’s the same as nearby Shannon’s livestock ordinance, Huggins said.

Lanark residents Nick and Ariel Pontnack have four chickens. Although they are happy to see the council updating the ordinance, they want more freedom.

“I think the proposed ordinance is very overbearing,” Pontnack said. “Not only for chicken owners, but for the city. It would be impossible for someone to have chickens, and the city would have to pay someone to inspect the coops and yards with tape measures and all.”

The ordinance committee is updating the proposal in the hope of having a version to vote on at the next council meeting.

“We are going to see if there is anything we can ease up on,” Huggins said.

Take a ‘Workation’ with the Lanark First Brethren outreach LANARK – During the April 17 church service, the Lanark First Brethren Church congregation learned the details of a new outreach program to be sponsored this summer, patterned after the format used in an Alaskan mission work camp program where First Brethren has had 10-12 persons participate each of the past three years.

Called Workation 2016, the program will serve Lanark area clients the week of June 13 to 18.

“Participation in the Alaskan experiences had been so personally rewarding that it seemed natural to want to help people locally, to participate in and have their own experience,” said William Iske, program chairman and participant in the Alaskan program last year with his youngest son, Jett.

His two oldest boys, Jacob and Grant, have participated for three years, while his son, Gage has gone twice.

“Coming back from that on the week, we needed to do something of this nature locally. That’s part of missions, is having that experience, then touching individuals within your daily life. We thought it would be easier to bring the program to Lanark than to transport the entire

congregation to Alaska.”

Workation 2016 is seeking requests from older residents that have small projects that they may not be able to accomplish on their own, but will make their home safer, more comfortable and/or attractive.

Interested residents may request information and details to host what the church calls a 1BRO team, and have projects completed free of charge.

No church membership participate as either a host or contributing/working partner.

Within the Independent Living Philosophy, we believe that the choices one makes are to support an independent path: your choices, your decision, choose wisely. Many heroes in our country, in our state, and in our communities worked very hard to provide these rights to people with disabilities; as a person with disabilities, I am forever grateful to these heroes.

Services for people with disabilities continue to dwindle in the U.S., but in particular, Illinois. The budget impasse is helping to destroy these services faster here in Illinois then in the rest of the country.

This is not something we should be proud of, in fact every person in Illinois should be angry and verbalizing this to our Legislators and Governor.

Once services leave, they do not come back.

With the quick demise of services in Illinois due to the budget deadlock it

Northwestern Illinois Center for Independent Living has been serving people since 1985. Our service area includes Carroll, Jo Daviess, Lee, Ogle, and Whiteside counties.

In March, NICIL’s Board of Directors had to make move forward with a closure plan due to NICIL not receiving our contract payments. This is an incredibly grim situation deciding how to reduce services to our valuable consumers, people just like us who have disabilities.

Is 30-plus years of service going away forever?

Life is about choices, and that includes our Legislators and Governor. the aisle does not eliminate the fact that each of you has made a choice to continue to be part of the destruction of services in Illinois.

Yes, we are calling each of you out publicly for

your participation in the destruction. If you feel bad about this and do not want to hear it anymore, which some of you have stated is your feelings, tough!

When you have great responsibilities as you do need to step up and take care of the business at hand: Resolve the budget impasse, work together, and lift Illinois from the last state in our country country and be heroes.

Make your choice, but God have mercy on you if your choice is to continue to destroy services for people with disabilities, in fact all services for Illinoisans.

Eastland hopes to spend less this school year Prairie Advocate staff

LANARK – The Eastland Schools third quarter budget, reviewed during the April 20 board meeting, prompted Superintendent Mark Hansen to district will spend less than its budgeted expenditures for the year, and hopeful that revenues will meet expectations.

Hansen said that up to this point, the budget showed that the district has spent about $6.184 million, or 73 percent, of its total budgeted expenditures in the Education, Operations and Maintenance and Transportation funds.

The total budgeted for the 2015-2016 school year was $8.454 million.

A resolution to abate $1,000,000 from the Working Cash fund to the Capital Improvements fund was approved. The funds were deposited after the board issued working cash bonds to pay for the HVAC upgrades at Eastland Elementary and Jr/Sr High Schools. Hansen said abating the funds to the Capital Improvements fund is the process by which the funds can be expended.

In order to meet all of the requirements of the CCR, you include the following additionalinformation if it pertains to your water system. must • The report must include the telephone number of the owner, operator, or designee of the community water system as a sourceof additional information concerning the report.

• In communities with a large proportion of non-English speaking residents, as determined by the Primacy Agency, the reportmust contain information in the appropriate language(s) regarding the importance of the report or contain a telephone numberor address where such residents may contact the system to obtain a translated copy of the report and/or assistance in theappropriate language.

• The report must include information about opportunities for public participation in decisions that may affect the quality ofthe water (e.g., time and place of regularly scheduled board meetings).

• If your water system purchases water from another source, you are required to include the current CCR year’s RegulatedContaminants Detected table from your source water supply.

• If your water system had any violations during the current CCR Calendar year, you are required to include an explanation ofthe corrective action taken by the water system.

• If your water system is going to use the CCR to deliver a Public Notification, you must include the full publicnotice and return a copy of the CCR and Public Notice with the Public Notice Certification Form. This is in addition to the copy and certification form required by the CCR Rule.

• The information about likely sources of contamination provided in the CCR is generic. Specific informationregarding contaminants may be available in sanitary surveys and source water assessments and should be usedwhen available to the operator.

• If a community water system distributes water to its customers from multiple hydraulically independentdistribution systems fed by different raw water sources, the table should contain a separate column for eachservice area, and the report should identify each separate distribution system. Alternatively, systems mayproduce separate reports tailored to include data for each service area.

• Detections of unregulated contaminants for which monitoring is required are not included in the CCR and mustbe added. When added, the information must include the average and range at which the contaminant wasdetected.

• If a water system has performed any monitoring for Cryptosporidium, including monitoring performed tosatisfy the requirements of the Information Collection Rule [ICR] (§141.143), which indicates thatCryptosporidium may be present in the source water or the finished water, the report must include: (a) asummary of the results of the monitoring; and (b) an explanation of the significance of the results.

• If a water system has performed any monitoring for radon which indicates that radon may be present in thefinished water, the report must include: (a) The results of the monitoring; and (b) An explanation of thesignificance of the results.

• If a water system has performed additional monitoring which indicates the presence of other contaminants inthe finished water, EPA strongly encourages systems to report any results which may indicate a healthconcern. To determine if results may indicate a health concern, EPA recommends that systems find out if EPAhas proposed an NPDWR or issued a health advisory for that contaminant by calling the Safe Drinking WaterHotline (800–426–4791). EPA considers detects above a proposed MCL or health advisory level to indicatepossible health concerns. For such contaminants, EPA recommends that the report include: (a) the results ofthe monitoring; and (b) an explanation of the significance of the results noting the existence of a healthadvisory or a proposed regulation.

• If you are a ground water system that receives notice from the state of a significant deficiency, you mustinform your customers in your CCR report of any significant deficiencies that are not corrected by December31 of the year covered by it. The CCR must include the following information: - The nature of the significant deficiency and the date it was identified by the state.

- If the significant deficiency was not corrected by the end of the calendar year, include informationregarding the State-approved plan and schedule for correction, including interim measures, progress to date,and any interim measures completed.

- If the significant deficiency was corrected by the end of the calendar year, include information regardinghow the deficiency was corrected and the date it was corrected.

Source of Water: MILLEDGEVILLE Based on information obtained in a Well Site Survey published in 1989 by the Illinois EPA, several potential secondary sources of contamination within 1,000 feet of the wells.The Illinois EPA has determined that the Milledgeville Community Water Supply's source water is not suspectibile to contamination. This determination is based on a number of criteria including; monitoring conducted at the wells; monitoring conducted at the entry point to the distribution system; and available hydrogeologic data on the wells.Furthermore, in anticipation of the U.S. EPA's proposed Ground Water Rule, the Illinois EPA has determined that the Milledgeville Community Water Supply is not vulnerable to viral contamination. This determination is based upon the evaluation of the following criteria during the Vulnerability Waiver Process: the community's wells are properly constructed with sound integrity and proper siting conditions; a hydraulic barrier exists which hould prevent pathogen movement; all potential routes and sanitary defects have been mitigated such that the source water is adequately protected; monitoring data did not indicate a history of disease outbreak; and the sanitary survey of the water supply did not indicate a viral contamination threat. Because the community's wells are constructed in a confined aquifer, which should prevent the movement of pathogens into the wells, well hydraulics were not considered to be a significant factor in this determination. Hence, well hydraulics were not evaluated for this system ground water supply.

As one would expect, Eastland principal Monica Burkholder was a bit worried when she found out longtime volleyball coach Kristy Pierce was retiring.

After all, Pierce was the only coach the Eastland Cougars had ever known, and she had amassed 941 wins and three Class 1A state championships – including last season – in her 34-year run as head coach, including the past 30 in Lanark.

“As an administrator, you start to become nervous, and think a lot about ‘What are we going to do?’” Burkholder said Thursday. “This program has done so well and had so much success under Kristy that you know it’s going to

Former Mt. Pulaski and SIU-Edwardsville standout Mallory Clements was hired as Eastland’s new head coach at Wednesday’s school board meeting, a “couple of months” after contacting Burkholder via email expressing interest in the job.

“I’m actually moving to the area soon, and I’m engaged to be married in December,” said Clements, who currently works for Coyote Logistics in Chicago. “I heard about the job through word of mouth, and all the similarities between my high school volleyball experience and the program

at Eastland were so close. I realized it was a great opportunity to take over a program that Mallory already Clements had a strong tradition, something that was built for me, and it was too good to pass up.”

Clements was a 4-year varsity player at state powerhouse Mt. Pulaski from 2001-04, playing for the Class A state runner-up in She was a team captain her junior and senior years,. and graduated as her class valedictorian.

She went on to a successful career at SIUEdwardsville, when she was again a team captain

as a junior and senior.

A third-team Division II All-American as a junior in 2007, Clements still holds the school record for service aces, and is second on SIUE’s all-time assists list.

She went right from her playing career into the coaching ranks. She was a graduate assistant at SIUE in 2009-10 while earning a Masters degree in business administration, and then was an assistant coach in 2010-11, and the interim head coach in 2011. She then served as assistant coach at Western Illinois in 2011-12. She also coached club volleyball from 2006-11.

“We’re just so excited accomplished on the court and academically,” Burkholder said. “She knows who Kristy is, she knows who Eastland is, and she knows what we’re all about.

We couldn’t ask for a better situation.”

The Cougars have played in the annual Mt. Pulaski tournament for the last several years, and also went to state in 2003, when Clements was a junior on the Mt. Pulaski team that took second place. So Clements already had an inkling about Eastland volleyball.

“When I heard that name, my ears perked up,” Clements said. “I didn’t have to ask around a whole land was, because I was already familiar with them.”

Clements said she will sit down and talk with Pierce – who has already called Clements to congratulate her on the job – about the players and the program. As a former club and college coach, she said she will likely run a quick system, but knows there’s

no reason to reinvent the wheel coming into a program with Eastland’s pedigree.

Clements will inherit a team that loses seven starters from the Class 1A state title team, but returns standouts in hitter Makenzie Fink (area-high 469 kills, 189 digs, 32 blocks in 2015) and setter Ashley Beyers (areahigh 1,203 assists, 88 digs, 75 kills, 45 aces, 26 blocks), who were both unanimous all-NUIC West selections last season. blend the two styles if I can, and I’m excited to get into the gym and see the girls play in real time and evaluate the situation,” Clements said. “At the end of the day, I think the transition will be very smooth, because this team already knows what it takes to win, and you can’t teach that. MORRISON – Art, education and history: They can all be under one roof in Morrison, and one of the city’s former residents is helping put them there.

Brent Sikkema Brent Sikkema wants to see the city’s iconic 1858 Annan Grist Mill not only preserved, but also transformed into a public space. Thanks to his donation, his wish will come true.

“It’s an iconic piece of architecture in the community,” said Sikkema, 68, a Morrison native now living in thing you see when you come into town and the last thing you see when you go out. It’s an important piece of history, and I felt it needed to be protected.”

The 2.5 story stone structure sits off Lincoln Highway on the western edge of town, on the west bank of Rock Creek. It was known for using turbine power to grind wheat and buckwheat flour, for whole wheat breakfast food and cornmeal.

Sikkema, a contemporary art dealer, bought the mill from former Morrison residents Ted and Jackie Tilton last year for $150,000. The Tiltons bought it in 1990 and put in electricity, plumbing, and some interior walls. It sat empty for 40 or 50 years before that.

In December, he donated it to the Morrison Historical Society.

“When I invested it, I was surprised it had no historical protection whatsoever,” Sikkema said. “Anyone could have bought the building and altered it to their wishes.”

Now that it’s in the hands of the Morrison Historical Society, the mill will be turned into a museum focusing on farming, agricultural methods and the evolution of grains, society President Harvey Zuidema said.

LANARK – Mayor John Huggins said Lanark had a great 2015, partly because of MAPPING sessions held in 2014, and the efforts that followed by three committees that were created as a result.

The Transformers Team, from the city’s MAPPING team Living Lanark: United for Change, has re-imagined last year’s Day of Possibilities and Night of Possibilities as “Explore Lanark,” with a variety of events and activities that will encourage area residents and visitors to discover all Lanark has to offer, and is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 14.

“A wide variety of events will take place throughout the day,” said Denise Krysiak, a member of the Transformers. “The focus will be on the businesses along the state Route 64 corridor from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the spotlight will shift to the midtown - businesses not along a highway - and downtown businesses in the afternoon from 1 to 4 p.m.”

She said the Transformers Team is creating a “passport,” a map illustrating participants.

The back will list the special offer or activity at each location and the times it will be available. Customers will obtain a “stamp” from each location to enter a prize drawing, which will require a minimum number of stamps to qualify.

MORRISON – Morrison’s American Legion Post 328, with the assistance of the Morrison Lions Club, has replaced the flag pole located at the boat ramp to Lake Carlton at Morrison-Rockwood State Park. The original flag pole, which was put up by the Morrison Lions Club dedicated to the memory of L.C. Anderson, sustained permanent, extensive damage due to harsh winds over the winter.

Ken Petersen, an avid fisherman at the park and Post 328’s adjutant, asked the Illinois Department of Natural Resources why they had not replaced the flag pole and flag.

The DNR said that it was not out of lack of respect or desire, but due to the nearly year-long budget battle in Illinois, resulting in no budget.

Petersen brought it to the attention of Post 328, whose members voted unanimously to replace the pole and flag.

Removal of the remaining portion of the damaged pole was a little bit of a challenge at first, but Petersen, Post 328 Finance Officer Jerry Brearton and Sean Hayden of the IDNR prevailed.

LANARK – First-time Shannon author Bonnie Foust was the guest speaker at the Friends of the Lanark Library meeting on April 21.

She discussed writing her newly published book, Oren Bunny meets Essie Bear.

Foust said the main character, Oren Bunny, is dealing with his anger, like many children.

“This has gotten him into a lot of trouble with his parents, especially when he yells at his little brother.

When Oren meets Essie Francis Thayer Bear in his dream, she helps him work through the ‘mad’ that is inside of him using a simple technique called the Emotional Freedom Technique, or EFT,” said Foust, who has been a teacher in the Eastland School District for many years, in regular, special, and adult education, and pre-school.

Formerly from Lanark, Foust attended the Lanark school halfway through third grade before her family moved to Shannon after her father’s service in the Air Force. She said she was fortunate to have been able to come back and teach at the school she attended as a child, and get to know more Lanark people over the years.

“In the 1990’s, I decided I was going to write some books,” Foust said.

“So I shipped them off to the publishers, and got all these rejection notices. I thought, ‘No, I have little kids, and other things to worry about.’

So I stopped.”

She still has those books that she will get published, but it was at that time

Another term for it is energy psychology. It’s a way to neutralize the anger, frustration, and even pain. People are using it for a multitude of things.”

It wasn’t until the birth she realized there was no EFT training for children.

“They need as much help as adults do! I try to envision all of us adults, dragging behind us, 20 big, black, invisible hefty bags full of emotional garbage that we have collected through our lives. I’m thinking, why don’t we help kids eliminate some of that, so they don’t have to deal with that when they’re 40 or 50?”

Foust said she wrote the story in one day – three years ago. It was completed and hit the market in January.

“It wasn’t hard writing the story. But it’s a long journey to get self-published.”

“I tried sewing heart buttons on each bear, and at that time, was doing eight tapping point hearts instead of just four. So now I have 200 boxes in my basement, and 300 bears!”

Foust said Essie was a surrogate. In the story, Oren gets mad, or in trouble, gets sent to his room, and falls asleep. That’s when he meets Essie. She describes what Oren is feeling, because “sometimes, kids don’t understand what that feeling is that they’re feel-

ing. They don’t have a word for it.”

She said the book can be considered a training manual for parents, where she highlights four tapping points to help children - and their parents and grandparents - tap their way to emotional freedom.

“We all need to deal with our anger. Anger can take a family and just destroy it in a heartbeat.

Things are said, things are done, and you can never take them back. If we can try and help kids learn a tool they can use to help them, maybe we can all learn it, too.”

Foust took the time to acknowledge the Friends organization for their efforts in helping the Lanark Public Library fund special programs and enhance the library’s selections.

“You guys are amazing.

I’m just loving this board.

Before the new library was completed, I helped a little bit with some of your projects, but this is just wonderful that you have this lovely space, and that coming from a town that has no library! You really are blessed.”

Foust said her daughter, Katie, majored in marketing, and has been a tremendous help in publicizing the book.

“Katie’s my Facebook, Instagram, and web site person. She’s the one pushing me. At least, for awhile, I felt she was pushing me.

Now, I feel like we’re walking hand in hand.”

Carroll Service Fuels the Future for Cougars and Missiles

LANARK — A program designed to help two school districts in Carroll County that started in the last quarter of 2015, has already made two donations to the Eastland and Chad-

wick-Milledgeville School districts.

“We initiated the program as a donation to the schools,” said Deb Meiste, Carroll SerMeiste said the funds are generated by FS Fast Stop card holders that purchase fuel at either the Lanark or Milledgeville

locations. She said there is a Fuel 24 station in Lanark that supports Eastland Schools, and ChadwickMilledgeville Schools receive funds from the Milledgeville gas station.

“We’re doing this for our FS Fast Stop card holders. When they sign up for the program, we donate one

cent per gallon of their fuel purchase, on their behalf.

The schools receive the donations once a quarter,” said Meiste.

Eastland donations from the Fuel the Future program are distributed among the athletic boosters, music boosters, PTO, and the FFA.

The Milledgeville School is using the funds to enhance the weight room facility for student athletes.

Meiste said that if you wish to participate, stop in at the Lanark or Milledgeville fuel stations and ask for a form.

“Just because you have

an FS Fast Stop card doesn’t mean you are part of the program. We need your signature to authorize your participation,” Meiste said.

• Inspect the exhaust system for leaks, damage and broken supports or hangers if there is an

unusual noise. Exhaust leaks can be dangerous and must be corrected without delay.

• Schedule a tune-up that will help the engine deliver the best balance of power and fuel economy and produce the lowest level of emissions.

• Check the car’s heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) system as proper heating and cooling performance is critical for interior comfort and for safety reasons, such as defrosting.

• Inspect the steering and suspension system annually, including shock absorbers and struts, and chassis parts, such as ball joints, tie rod ends and other related components.

• Check the pressure of all tires, including the spare, at least once a month. Check the tread for uneven or irregular wear and cuts and bruises along the sidewalls.

ast week I thanked all of the volunteers in our organization for all that they do. I didn’t list all of them as I would hate to leave someone out.

We have so many who may stop by to help for an hour, or may give 30 hours a year.

Each of those hours, be it one or the other, are greatly appreciated.

There is one person who I certainly could not do my job without. I tried for three years and thankfully she came back! This marks Administrative Appreciation Week. And while I agree that it may be another Hallmark holiday, I try to show my appreciation throughout the year for my great assistant, Jessica Rubio.

Jessica knows that I can’t do my job without her! I don’t have to worry about her getting things done and she knows what I am thinking without my saying it. Thanks for all you do, Jessica!

Mark your calendars – The Women’s Committee will be having their annual Hamburger Promotion from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, May 27. The ladies will be again selling hamburgers for 15 cents, which was the value of corn in the livestock feed when corn was $7.50 a bushel.

While corn prices are not near that high currently, and fuel prices have decreased as well, food prices have not. It is often a tendency to throw the blame on those who grow our food. While they are very important in us having food, they aren’t to blame for the food prices.

Now that Mother Nature has cooperated a little to allow spring to come, please be on the look out for slow moving vehicles on the road. The farmers are busy moving equipment and trying to get this year’s crop planted. They are moving a lot slower than you think.

They are also not going to be able to move as fast to get out of your way.

CHAMPAIGN — The Carroll Co. 4-H Horse Bowl and Hippology participants had a great day at the state contest held in Champaign. But in the senior division, Kaiti Collins of the Milledgeville Hotshots 4-H Club placed fourth overall in senior Hippology, which the national contest this fall in Louisville, Kentucky.

“Horse Bowl is a three or four person team like Quiz Bowl, and the contest is con-

ducted like Quiz Bowl, but in this contest all the questions are equine related,” said Coach Bryan Hollewell of Milledgeville. “The Hippology contest is individual testing on horse judging, an oral question and a written test.”

Also doing well in the intermediate division Hippology was Olivia Charles of the Carroll Co. Kids 4-H state; Brenna Berns of Ogle County took second place.

Recycling Senior Service earns a great deal of money each year through the efforts of those who gather newspapers and aluminum cans in their respective communities, and those who bundle the paper and haul it to the local distribution centers. We need more help with this project. The “gathering” people work just a couple of hours a month in their respective communities. The “bundlers” work at the Senior Center just about any day when they have an hour or two to spare. And the “loaders/haulers” help load and/or haul the papers to the distribution center.

Director’s Chair The salad is good food for the body, and Scrabble is good exercise for the brain, which keeps it healthier, too.

If you have ever heard any of these words before, you might just be a Scrabble player, and a good one at that!

Played by two to four people, Scrabble challenges players to form words from individual letters on a game board with a 15 × 15 grid marked out. Highest score wins, based on letter values and bonus boxes on the board, so having a large vocabulary is Originally called Lexiko, Scrabble was invented by game lover Alfred Mosher Butts in 1931. Shortly after, the name was changed to Criss-Cross Words, before eventually settling on Scrabble.

Over the years, Scrabble has continued to grow in popularity and has been sold in 121 countries with versions available in 29 different languages. Around the world, over 50 million Scrabble sets have been sold to date, and the into the National Toy Hall of Fame in 2004.

So why am I talking about Scrabble? Well, just like food, Scrabble is a simple pleasure intended to be enjoyed in the company of friends and family.

Jicama looks like a somebrown skin. Just peel like a potato, cut and eat. It is sweet, crispy, and delicious.

And when you are playing Scrabble, it is a perfect occasion to have a healthful dish for everyone to enjoy, like this salad.

Four Color Crunch Salad 4 cups fresh corn kernels (about 6 ears); or 1 (16 ounce) bag frozen sweet yellow corn 4 cups freshly shelled garden peas, raw, steamed or quickly blanched; or 1 (16 ounce) bag of frozen green peas 1 large red bell pepper, cut in small pieces 1 medium jicama, peeled and cut into small cubes 1 avocado, cut into small cubes 1 lemon If using frozen corn or green peas, pour them into a large sieve, thaw under running water, and drain. Mix corn kernels, shelled green peas, red bell pepper and jicama in a large salad bowl. Top the salad with avocado, and squeeze the juice of one lemon over it.
