In love with dirt: Schells get ready for farmers markets

CHADWICK — Farmers markets are one of the oldest forms of direct marketing by small farmers. Growers all over the world gather weekly to sell their produce directly to the public. Particularly in the last decade, they have become a favorite marketing method for many Northwestern Illinois farmers, and a weekly ritual for many shoppers.

Janice Schell, who with her husband of 26 years, John, operate Schell Farm Produce in rural Chadwick, sell at the Milledgville and Savanna markets, as well as Dixon and Morrison.

But their hearts are with the Carroll County markets, and they want to see them all thrive.

“This year offers more than ever. Shoppers and vendors are getting excited, too, because I’ve had a lot of phone calls already!” Schell said. “We’ve expanded quite a bit this year, and hope to add Lanark’s Tuesday market to our schedule.”

She said growing and gardening is the couple’s mission in life.

“We love it. We’ve been selling at farmers markets for about 6 years, but we’ve always had a huge garden.

WATAGA — Aaron Daniel Huls, 31, of Wataga, died at 6:01 a.m. on Friday, April 8, 2016 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria.

He was born on Oct. 10, 1984 in Ft. Madison, Iowa, the son of Alan and Bea Snyder Huls. He attended schools in Dallas City, before moving to Wataga, where he graduated from ROWVA High School.

Aaron married Megan Potaczek on May 4, 2013 in Wataga.

Aaron worked as a mechanic and auto body specialist at Cozadd Diesel. He loved working on and restoring cars and woodworking. He also enjoyed coaching his daughter Lillian’s T-ball team.

Surviving is his wife, Megan Huls of Wataga; one daughter, Lillian Huls of Wataga; his parents, Alan and Bea Huls of Wataga; two brothers, Adam (Alison) Huls of Springfield, and Andrew Huls of Wataga; one sister, Amanda (Tim) Banks of Galesburg; his maternal grandmother, Dorothy Snyder of Burnside; and many

And Bill Gates is the guy who sold out to the feds, and now his GMO mosquitoes have gifted us with the Zika virus. That is more Rockefeller-style depopulation, dovetailing nicely with the other scientific methods of demise, like processed food, drugs and vaccines.

With gifts like these from corporate America, who needs terrorists?

I know that a lot of media has been lumping super delegates into the total numbers, which has many voters even more confused, but to hand over half or more of the delegates to a person who has clearly lost in that state continues to hurt this countries reputation and a nation that respects the voice of its voters.

I am outraged when I read articles about how close the race is when one side is winning all of the contests. This should make voters stand up and demand an explanation!

What has me worried is that I continue to read stories about voters casting votes in majority for a politician just to have the person they are running against take the delegates.

Maybe I grew up in a different America than the rest of these people, but I always thought that when American voters voted for someone, that person should be the one elected. I understand that there are rules that the average person doesn’t know or understand, but shouldn’t the outcome matter to us?

We fight for our rights on a daily basis, and yet overlook that our basic right to elect our leader is being pulled out from under our feet? This is a huge problem in my eyes and I am standing in a growing circle of voters who feel as though we are being cheated!

I am not taking sides in this letter, as I feel both sides are guilty of this; but it is hard to overlook the fact that Sen. Sanders has won eight of the last nine primary contests, many by double digits, and yet Clinton continues to take most of the delegates. How can we say as a country that the people’s votes matter if each time the American people cry out in favor of Sanders, all they are given in return is to watch Clinton continue to make her way to the top?

hile I missed National Volunteer Week last week, it wasn’t intentional, just time passed before I knew it. We are an organization that relies on volunteers. Quite heavily honestly!

Some of them are in the form of our board of directors, our Young Leaders, our Women’s Committee or members of our action teams.

Those on our board and committees put in numerous hours throughout the year between meetings, and the many programs we host.

I don’t want you to feel discouraged in volunteering, hearing how they help us throughout the year, as I promise it is painless. They schedule, as there are times

Orphan Trains: An important part of NW Illinois history

MOUNT CARROLL — Since 2008, when a good friend told her that her grandmother came to this area on an orphan train, Carol Chandler of Dixon has been researching this important part of history. The interest took over her life.

“This research has become a very important part of my life. I joke with my kids that when I die they should bury my research with me,” Chandler said during a presentation at the Carroll County Home Community Education meeting on April 11 at Naaman Diehl auditorium in Mount Carroll.

The Orphan Train movement was a supervised welfare program that transported orphaned and homeless children from crowded eastern cities of the United States to foster homes in rural areas of the Midwest. The trains operated from 1854 to 1929, relocating around 200,000 orphaned, abandoned, and homeless children.

“In 1853, a wonderful man names Charles Loring Brace decided to help these children,” said Chandler.

With help from the New York Foundling Hospital, Brace began transporting these children to new homes via “orphan trains” or “baby trains.” This relocation of children ended in the 1920’s when foster care in America began.

“During the Industrial Revolution, children worked 24 hours a day. And farmers needed kids to work, so orphans only went to school 4 months of the year.”

But in 1874, Chandler said the public’s view point of family changed. Boarding houses in New York heard reports of kids being beaten.

“At that time, there were no laws preventing cruelty to children, but there was a law preventing cruelty to animals,” she said.

In 1875, the government stepped in. In 1896, a law was passed stating that all children in institutions were required to have a doctor’s examination every year.

The last orphan train ended in 1929 in Sulfur Springs, Texas. She said kids were

sent to every state in the union before the train ended.

During her many years of researching this topic, Chandler has found many wonderful, and horrible, stories.

“Many of these kids grew up to work in social services, become lawyers, and pastors. One story I found was about two brothers that were placed in different homes, but were later reunited after 85 years.

One of those gentlemen had wound up in Maquoketa, Iowa. They reunited in New Jersey.

“I found out that one of Alaska’s governors was an orphan train rider. Eightyseven percent of placements were considered successful.

This is a wonderful part of our history, and they are among us today.”

Fore no more: Two longtime golf courses have closed

MORRISON – Two longtime local golf courses will not be open this summer.

Oakville Country Club, 8044 Oakville Road, Mount Carroll, and Prairie Ridge Golf Course, 903 West Morris St., Morrison, have been sold.

Prairie Ridge Golf Course had been owned by Lowell Beggs, who purchased the course in 2007.

He couldn’t be reached for comment, but City Administrator Barry Dykhuizen said the course was open last year, “but from what I understand, he made the decision over the winter to not reopen.”

The 18-hole course, which originally opened in 1911, had a driving range, practice bunker and putting green.

The course also included the Oak Room Restaurant, which is also closed.

Dykhuizen said Beggs decided to close the restaurant last fall.

“I have not heard that it is for sale, and I don’t know what Mr. Beggs’ intentions are with his business,” Dykhuizen said.

The course opened in 1963

by Bob and Bobbie Hartman of Mount Carroll. In 1986, Nancy Woodside and her husband, Al, purchased it.

Today, the land is owned by two different parties.

John and Betty Tautz, owners of Tautz Trenching Excavating in Mount Carroll, bought 46 acres in February for $315,000.

The purchase includes holes one through six and hole nine, the clubhouse and equipment shed. Jeff Lessman, president of Eastland Motor Sports in

Lanark, and his wife, Patty, bought the 13 acres that make up holes seven and eight. He declined to say how much they paid for the land, which they closed on in early February.

“We bought property from Nancy,” Betty Tautz said.

“She is 78 and she didn’t want to do it anymore. Her husband passed away in 2007 and it was just her and her son, Jeff, running it.”

Woodside, of Mount Carroll, could not be reached for comment and messages left to her son went unreturned.

John Tautz said they spent about a month clearing the land of brush and trees, and even added a few holes – of a different kind. Fifty cases of dynamite were used to remove 670 tree stumps.

For now, the course is sitting idle, but the Tautzes, hope something can be done with the land going forward, whether it’s as a golf course “It’s getting to be late in the season to plant beans and corn,” the Tautzes’ son, Karl, said. “If someone comes along with the right it turned into a golf course.

Lessman said he has no immediate plans for his portion of the land, but he, too, would like to see a golf course on the property. If that plan doesn’t pan out, he said they’d “use the 13 acres for recreational purposes or land management.”

Lessman and his wife have lived right off the course for the past 5 years.

“We wanted to be in a rural setting,” he said. “We bought the land because the surrounding area is beautiful. This property also protects our backyard.”

“We are holding out hope that we will lease the property and turn it back into a golf course,” he said. “But there doesn’t appear to be anyone who is interested.”

Council unanimously OKs Grand Squares donates preliminary budget for city $455 to food pantry

MORRISON – Balancing a $4.1 million budget might be easy, at least compared to coming up with more money to put in it.

The City Council voted unanimously April 11 to approve a preliminary budget for the city – but that budget told only part of the story. The other chapter in the city’s ledger books has yet to be written, and it will end. What they do know is that the city needs more than $400,000 to fund the city’s capital equipment needs.

In order for those needs to be met, City Administrator Barry Dykhuizen said the city must Barry develop and Dykhuizen put in place a strategy to provide adequate funds on an ongoing basis.

Although it’s an issue that needs to be addressed, Dykhuizen said it’s a long-term problem that will not be solved in 1 year.

“It’s something we need months,” he said. “We need to free up new revenue, further cut expenditures or a combination of both. My job is to work with the City Council to make sure we can get that happening.”

In the meantime, the city will at least be able to get some badly needed roadwork done.

In 2014, residents approved a 1 percent sales tax referendum. The revenue, estimated at $17,500 a month, will make it possible for the city to update some of the worst streets in the city. Among those is Wall Street, from the west side of Hall Street to the west city of Cherry Street. Bids open

today for that work. Curb ramps and sidewalks will also be included.

The budget is available for viewing in city hall and will be up for official approval Monday.

New council member

In other business, the council voted unanimously to name Kenneth Mahaffey to take over as First Ward Alderman on the council.

He replaced Michael Blean, after Blean resigned from the board last month after moving outside of the city limits.

Mahaffey, an attorney in Ludens, Potter and Melton, will serve out the remainder of Blean’s term, which runs through April 2017, after which he’ll have to run for re-election if he wants to serve out the remaining 2 years of the term.

Wastewater treatment plant bid hopes to be awarded this week

SAVANNA – Public Works Superintendent John Lindeman told the Savanna City Council April 13 that the city was still waiting for the IEPA to sign off on the bid award to Williams Brothers Construction for the construction of the wastewater treatment facility. Hopes were that the bid would be approved within the week.

Alderman Jeff Griswold asked about any possible potholes developing, such as the one on the road to ShopKo, and how long Fischer Excavating – working on the in-system portion of the overall project – would warrant their work for issues such as this.

Lindeman said he thought the work would be covered for 1 year after completion and signoff. He agreed that the whole area would likely need to be redone as they had not achieved proper compaction on this area. He said he was concerned about a similar problem on Bowen Street, but that was where Jo Carroll Energy had done work.

He said there was the potential that JCE would areas and if that happened, “a conversation about covering the cost” with Jo Carroll would be necessary.

Eastland’s Conner Erbsen advances to FFA national contest Students participate in dairy cattle judging competition Prairie Advocate staff

CENTRALIA — Eastland FFA member Connor Erbsen won the State FFA Dairy Cattle Handlers Activity on Friday April 8, at Kaskaskia College in Centralia.

Cindy Feltmeyer, Eastland High School agriculture instructor and FFA advisor, said Connor’s successful showing means he will represent the Eastland FFA, as well as Illinois FFA, at the national contest held at the National FFA Convention and Expo in Indianapolis this fall.

“During the state contest, Connor had to show multiple dairy cattle for the judge while other students were judging the

cattle,” said Fletmeyer.

“He was evaluated on his appearance, ability to control the cattle he was handling, poise and confidence, as well as his competency in showing off the female to the best of her ability, effective restraint of the animal, placing the animal in the best possible position to be judged, and his knowledge of the dairy industry.”

Feltmeyer said the Eastland FFA also participated in the dairy cattle judging contest, where the team placed fourth high team overall in the state. Members of the dairy cattle judging team are Jared Dickman, Emily Denekas, Elizabeth Kloepping, Nathan Erbsen and Payton Erbsen.

Feltmeyer said the team had to judge seven rings of dairy cattle.

“Placings were based on udder quality, frame of the animal, dairy character, dairy strength as well as structure. After students placed the classes, they took a test over their knowledge of the dairy industry,” said Feltmeyer.

Contestants also had to complete a skill-a-thon portion where they were to identify dairy cattle feed ingredients and dairy industry equipment.

“A special thank you to Erbacre Holsteins, as well as River Valley Farms and the Sauder Family from Tremont, for allowing the team to practice and aiding in their success,” Feltmeyer said.

First place state Dairy Cattle Handler, Connor Erbsen, will represent Eastland and Illinois FFA at the national competition this fall.

Sterling won with 380 points, followed by Belvidere (288) and Freeport (266). Rock Falls (183) was sixth.
