MOUNT CARROLL – Got a second? Wait a minute! It takes how many hours? Have you got time? Living in this digital era of cellphones, tablets, computers and instant-everything, Gretchen Wallander of the Carroll County Historical Society took some time to spend an afternoon with Alex Veith, Carroll County’s own horologist, taking photos and preparing for a display of his clocks at the Owen P. Miles Museum. For a limited time, nearly two dozen of Veith’s clocks will be on display Veith engages in horology, the science of measuring time and the art of making timecrafted time pieces a career focus as well as his hobby. “He likes antiques and nostalgia, and over time, has acquired dozens of watches and hundreds of clocks, in all sizes, ages and mechanisms,” Wallander said. “Stepping into the Veith home, sounds of ticktock emanate from every room, every wall, every curio cabinet or shelf, upstairs and downstairs,” she said. “On the hour and

But the next Christmas, the owner of Don’s Jewelry, Dan Bartels, gave it as a gift to Veith and it has become one of his favorites. A graduate of Mount Carroll High School in 1990, Veith attended Highland Community College and Gem City College in Quincy, where he learned clock and watch repair, construction and engraving, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in business. One week after graduation, Veith started working at a familyowned business, Don’s Jewelry in Clinton, Iowa, where he has been for more than 20 years. “Don Bartels opened his jewelry store in 1959. He’s almost 84 years old and still comes in every day but Saturday,” Veith said. The business is now owned by Don’s son, Dan Bartels. Veith’s personal collection numbers more than 200 timepieces. Several special clocks were received from grandparents and greatgrandparents, including a Seth Thomas clock from the 1920s that belonged to his great-grandma Pink, who lived to be 100.

Retirement planning – one step at a time Angie VanderVinne Insurance and Financial Saving for retirement can be confusing. If your employer matches all or a part of the contribution you make to a 401K, then you should be contributing that amount. For example, if your employer will match up to a 4 percent contribution, then you should contribute 4 percent.

By not taking advantage giving up free money – don’t do that! If you are able to contribute more than the company match, then instead of contributing more to a 401K or 403b, open a Roth IRA and contribute monthly to the Roth via electronic funds transfer.

Continue increasing your contribution to the Roth until you’ve reached the maximum contribution allowed per year. The total contribution you can make to all of your IRAs is $5,500, or 100 percent of your compensation, whichever is less. If you’re 50 or older, you can make

an additional contribution of $1,000, for a total of $6,500. After maxing out your Roth IRA contribution, you can increase your 401K contribution until you reach the maximum allowed by law. For 2015, this limit is $18,000. If you’re 50 or older, you can make

Beyond Retirement: What about your other goals? First State Bank Shannon-Polo-Lake Carroll In addition to saving for retirement, there may be cial goals you’ll need to juggle in a lifetime. Let’s say that at the age of 25 you earned $35,000. If your salary increased at the average historical rate, you’d have earned nearly $2 million by the time you were 65.(1) That might sound like a lot – until you begin thinking you’ll need to juggle in a lifetime, including buying a home and paying for your child’s education, while funding your own retirement. If managed wisely, your money could go a long way. It’s really all about putting a plan in place and sticking to it. These tips may help get you started:

Get a jump on all your goals

You’ve read in these pages

before about the value of starting early on retirement savings, even if you can only invest a little each month. The same goes for college savings and other goals. Even a $100 a month investment for college could potentially leave you with about $36,000 in 10 years, assuming an average annual return of 8 percent — a good start that you can build on as your income grows.(1)

Set aside a slice of pay hikes

As your income rises over the course of your career, it’s easy to slip into a pattern of “living up” to your means; that is, spending that extra pay you didn’t have before on daily living expenses. Instead, consider setting a quota for yourself: Earmark a predetermined portion of every pay hike for your savings goals. You

may want to apply the same rule to other windfalls, like an unexpected bonus or tax return.

Robin Saar

Use the right tools for the job

Just as your employersponsored retirement plan offers a tax-advantaged opportunity to set aside money for your later years, certain vehicles, such as 529 college savings plans, provide potentially attractive tax breaks for college savers. Minimizing the taxes you have to pay up front on investments and earnings gives you the chance to make the most of compounding over time. Finally, whatever your

City explores hiring a city administrator

By MICHAEL MILLER For Prairie Advocate

SAVANNA — The Savanna City Council is considering hiring a city administrator. The council heard a lengthy presentation March 10 from Mark Moran, Galena’s administrator, and John Phillips, recently retired from his position as city manager of Rock Island, a job he held for about 25 years, after holding similar positions in Rockford and Rockton. Phillips said administrators “should be, and typically are, experienced professionals with a lot of knowledge about local government.” He added that, by a code of ethics, they cannot be involved in political activities and must adhere to democratic principles. Phillips said that the increasing complexity of municipal regulations, laws, grants, and state decisions can be daunting for a community. Many small communities are looking toward the future and how to thrive and survive, and administrators can help

Actions and announcements at Savanna City Council Also at the March 10 City Council meeting: Police Chief Michael Moon’s announcement that the area has been beset by numerous phone call and Internet scams, and said if anyone has a question to contact his department so that they can determine whether a fraud is being perpetrated. Public Works Superintendent John Lindeman said he knew there were many potholes in town and to contact him if there is one in your area. He also noted his department has been dealing with several water main breaks due to the spring thaw. Fire Chief Shawn Picolotti said the annual Fireman’s Breakfast will be held at 7 a.m. on March 29. The council approved draw down number 11 for payments to Triumph Community Bank for services rendered by MSA Engineering for design engineering work on the in-system sanitary sewer component of the city’s ongocreate a vision for the future. Moran said he was a zoning administrator for Galena, then later an interim city administrator, and from there worked on a permanent basis in that job. He said he thinks the main role of an administrator was to maintain good relations between the mayor and

The bulbs will stay in for 90 days and if they do not provide adequate brightness, they will be removed and the city will not have to pay for them. The requirement for direct deposit module for all city employee checks was approved, meaning all payroll checks will be automatically deposited. The cost of the implementation will be $599. Approved for the Public Works department is the purchase of a garage ventilation system, the cost of which is not to exceed $9,000; seven radios, the cost not to exceed $2,100; Chlorine, flouride and phosphate meters, not to exceed $1,500; chlorine scales for the well building, not to exceed $4,500; and a chlorine feeder and booster pumps, not to exceed $2,000. – Michael Miller

the council. He agreed that his role is to carry out the decisions made by the governing bodies, not to make those decisions himself. Moran said one of his key duties is budgeting and nel management and team building. He also noted focus on customer service,

staff and goal setting were high on his list of responsibilities. Administrators also oversee projects from the bidding process all the way to the construction phase. Mayor Tony McCombie said some of the motivation for pursuing this possibility revolved around the poten-

tial upcoming retirement of City Comptroller and Treasurer Sheryl Sipe, who the mayor said did many complex and diverse tasks for the city, adding that it someone who would be able to truly duplicate her role. She said another issue that had plagued the city for many administrations was the problem of having to appoint council members because of relocations or other situations, creating vacancies. McCombie said that the notion of having just one alderman per ward and one “at large” also is explored. McCombie asked what the munity that opted for hiring a city administrator, “because really everything comes down to money when you’re spending taxpayers’ dollars.” Phillips said there was innate value in “helping a community accomplish its goal over the next, 5. 10, 20, 30 years . . . and how do you put a price tag on that? This is a community that I believe has tremendous potential, but it doesn’t necessarily happen. Folks

really have to be focused on what they have to achieve . . . and I think a professional administrator working with the elected body, with people in the community, working with staff, can help you accomplish those goals and achieve that vision that you want to achieve.” Alderwoman Peg Haffey wanted to know what a city administrator is paid, and Phillips said it could range from $60,000 to $80,000 per year. Alderman Bill Sweeney wondered about the length of time one could expect an administrator to stay in the position; Phillips said the average was about 6 or7 years. Phillips said that it would take about 6 months to initiate and go through the process of hiring such an individual, and that the supand their constituents was vital to the success of the administrator model. He estimated it would take a minimum of 2 years to determine whether the idea to the community.

It was standing room only during the West Carroll FFA presentation Saturday morning at the Tribute to Agriculture in Thomson. Answering questions posed by WC FFA Advisor Dan Hartman are (from left to right) Jacob Casey, Legend Nelson, Emma Aljets, Bailey Durward, Brianna Kampmeier, and FFA Chairman Daniel Hartman.

Rick Trahan, John Deere Historic Site blacksmith and site supervisor at Grand Detour home, shows a “poor man’s gold leaf” he created to Anna and Rachel Badtke of Thomson. Trahan brought his tools of the trade to Thomson’s Tribute to Agriculture Day: his leg vice, 130-pound anvil, a variety of hammers, and a replica of John Deere’s original 1837 plow. “From one man, one anvil, and one plow to an international corporation that changed agriculture practices forever,” Trahan said. (PA photos/Tom Kocal) LEFT: Among a mix of antique and modern farming equipment, (from left) James, Lyndsey and Bill Brearton of Chadwick enjoyed the display. “We get to see the old way and the new way to farm,” Bill said. RIGHT: Fundraising efforts: Ann Dykstra (left) of Thomson orders a cookbook at the Thomson Sesquicentennial booth at the Tribute to Agriculture. Committee member Donna Diephuis answers Dykstra’s questions about the polo shirts, sweatshirts, cookbooks and quilt squares offered by the committee. Proceeds help to offset the costs related to the yearlong 150th celebration in the village. “The quilt project is sponsored by the Thomson Chapter of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, and people can buy a square,” Diephuis said. “There will be two quilts made. One will have a permanent home at the York Township Library, and the other will be auctioned off. We already have a bid for $1,000.”

Milledgeville Lady Missiles Head coach Brad Grenoble and assistants Joe Leddy, Jody Engelkens and Sandy Schmidt lead this year’s team, which posted a 22-7 overall record and went 17-1 to win the conference championship in 2014. Junior Alli Bush returns at shortstop, and junior Sam Schmidt will take the mound for Milledgeville. Coach Grenoble feels team speed, the ability to make teams think, and the fact that this team has seen the older groups win and what it takes to be successful are his squad’s strengths this season. A very young team, inexperience and a host of unproven players, he feels, will be its greatest weaknesses. He thinks Dakota, Pearl City and Orangeville will be three of the area’s top teams this year. “We will be very young,” Grenoble said, “but it will be fun working hard and climbing the mountain to the top again.” West Carroll Lady Thunder Head coach Don Mathey returns for his ninth season leading West Carroll. He 2014 with a 12-19 record and was 9-5 in the NUIC West in a second-place tie with Le-Win. The Lady Thunder won 8-5 in the Morrison Regional but lost to eventual state champion Rock Island Alleman 12-1

With these numbers, it will allow us to play full schedules at both the fresh/ soph and varsity levels. “We played pretty well last summer in the Freeport High School Summer gave many players a chance to play,” Mathey said. “We also played in a much tougher Morrison Summer there. We also have a couple of freshmen that played ASA ball who might help out team. “Team hitting should be better, and team speed should be pretty good. We also have excellent assistant

Our heart sank. The hospital. What now? Will the baby be OK? What about Fannie? At noon Daniel and I headed to the Wooster hospital to spend time with them. By Gloria Yoder So much has happened this last week. Disappointed, perplexed, grieving, yet rejoicing — well to the feelings and emotions we’ve experienced since my last letter. Several months ago, my husband Daniel’s oldest brother, Tobias, and his wife, Fannie, shared exciting news with us. After almost 4 years of marriage, they were expecting a baby. We were totally thrilled to hear about it. Tobias has always been outstanding when it comes to taking an interest in his nieces and it was their turn to look forward to a little one! Unfortunately, they ran into complications that left Fannie on bed rest. We felt sorry for them, yet comforted that it will be worth it all once their little bundle arrived. Daniel and I, along with Julia, Austin and Ohio, decided to journey to Ohio to spend time with Tobias and the rest of Daniel’s family. Early one morning we were awakened by Dad’s

us that they needed to transport Fannie to a larger hospital. Two hours later, Tobias, Fannie and I were on the ambulance headed for Cleveland. Later that evening, several more family members also came to show their love and support. Daniel and I got a bite to eat and rested a while. I was exhausted, and already had a lack of sleep, and the unknown hung heavy in the air. This left me feeling totally wrung out. We kept clinging to the Lord and looking to Him as our source of strength. After resting a while in the Ronald McDonald room, Daniel’s mother came with an update, informing us that the baby soon would be born. We all knew what that meant. With her being only 22 weeks along, the doctors wouldn’t even attempt to use life-support. At 10:50 p.m. their precious little boy, Israel David, was born, the son they had dreamt about so much. He was oh, so tiny, yet so perfect. He weighed 1 pound and was 11 inches long. His heart softly pounded as we took turns holding him and loving him. We gathered around Fannie’s bed and grieved

together as she held him close. “Let’s sing a song,” someone suggested. We softly sang a song that spoke of little children gathering at Jesus’ feet and another of children praising the Lord. It was so touching and painful, yet too precious for words. Little Israel lived 2 hours and 18 minutes. The following day more of Daniel’s family came to the hospital. This time they brought Julia with them. She was totally crushed when I explained to her that Tobias’ baby died. “I don’t want the baby to die! “she sobbed. We explained to her that it also makes us sad, yet we’re so happy that baby Israel can be in Heaven with Jesus. The following day several of us carefully and tenderly got him ready to be placed into a beautiful little casket made by Fannie’s father. Family and friends gathered at Tobias’ house where they viewed his little body and grieved with them. After the visitation we had brief services for the family. Several ministers shared comforting words about Heaven and the brevity of life. We also sang several songs before viewing his Next, we all gathered

around the tiny grave that Daniel and his brother David had prepared several hours before. It is on a beautiful spot on the edge of the woods. We sang more songs while they carefully covered the little grave. After everything was passed, we went back to Daniel’s parents house again. As we stepped into the kitchen, I noticed that someone had brought supper and gotten everything ready for us to eat. There was a note on the oven that said something like: “There’s a casserole in the oven. We’re thinking of you.” How thoughtful and heartwarming! It meant so much having returned from memorial services to come in from the blustery winter weather to a warm meal. The casserole was different from any others I have ever tasted. The neighbor, Eli, was nice enough to share the recipe with me, so I’m passing it on to you. Whenever l make this recipe, it

‘We don’t want to be too aggressive with repairs’ CUTS

CONTINUED FROM A11

“We don’t want to be too aggressive with repairs and run down the Motor Fuel Tax funds,” Dykhuizen said. Dykhuizen said that he and Tresenriter thought $175,000 would be a comfortable amount to spend on repairs. Cost estimates were submitted. Dykhuizen said that if the city were to allocate $175,000 for the street project, $50,000 could be spent on sealcoating, leaving $100,000 in the MFT account.

Other options included maintaining Wall Street now, then making it a top priority when 1 percent sales tax revenues come in; repairing Orange Street from Wall Street to U.S. Route 30, and beginning engineering preparation on Wall Street for next year; and sealcoating South and Morris streets this fall. Tresenriter said their plan is to do repairs on at least one street in each ward. Tresenriter said that Environmental Protection Agency permit section has approved the city’s waste water treatment project and

cost reduction proposal. The An application for the waste water treatment plant loan will be submitted in the next couple of weeks. Tresenriter said that he had visited two residences regarding their granting easements for the project, ments will be completed next week. Darius Bryjka, project reviewer at the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, will make a presentation at 6:30 p.m. April 21 at the Odell Public Library Community Room. The

Historic Preservation Commission and the Chamber of Commerce will co-host the informational meeting for Morrison’s National Historic District building owners. Bryjka has extensive experience in historic preservation at local, statewide, and national levels. An
