Eastland students prepare to bring history to life
Plan wax museum presentations of American history makers Friday

SHANNON – Eastland second-grade students are busy researching historic subjects as they prepare to host a Living History Wax Museum at 2 p.m. Friday at Eastland Elementary School in Shannon. The students are preparing for this event under the tutelage of second-grade teachers Carl Erbsen and Lindsey Wood. “The theme for the event is any notable American who has made an impact on the lives of others,” Erbsen said. “Some are presidents, sports heroes, authors, famous African-Americans, astronauts, or even people who have made an impact on agriculture, to name a few.” “We chose a wax museum because most, if not all of them, have passed away and we want the students to ‘come to life’ to tell their story to all who come to the museum,” Erbsen said. The students are learning several different ways of conducting research for this special project. “PebbleGo is a website kids can go to that gives information on a variety of science and social studies topics,” Erbsen said. “For
the history project, we have them go to the biography section and they can look up their individual and it gives them facts, videos, pictures, and more. They can read it on their own or it will read it to them.” Erbsen said students use the Internet, too, by searching for the individual to such as when Jackie Robinson entered the Baseball Hall of Fame. “We also have books at their reading levels where they can read and look up information,” Erbsen said. “Parents are a big part of this project,” Wood said. “We are so thankful to have such great support at home, we have some wonderful parents. They have been helping their child pick out an appropriate costume, practice their speech, and create a poster that represents the life of their famous American.” There are several other areas of learning combined with their history lesson, like language arts – writing their speech in complete sentences in a narrative form. “They have to write it as if they were the actual person speaking,” Erbsen said. “They have to present their speech to an audience with their poster as well, and in a
Eastland second-graders take a break from their research for a class photo. sense, they have to use their artistic abilities to create their posters.” “Students are practicing so many skills with this project,” Wood said. “The biggest thing they are learning, surprisingly, isn’t all the facts that they have memorized about their famous American, but rather the process of gathering information and using it in a powerful way. This will hopefully help them to grow as readers and writers even beyond the day of our wax museum.” Wood said students are learning how to research information and to take their research and decide what is meaningful and
relevant to their project. She said they have been working to strengthen their writing and have been developing more experience in the writing process. For example, Gage Kness is a baseball player. He chose to research Roberto Clemente. “He played baseball every chance he got,” Gage said. “He helped raise money for children in Puerto Rico, where he was from. He signed a contract with the Brooklyn Dodgers, but he never played on the team, so he played with the Pittsburgh Pirates for 17 seasons.” Impressed with his ability to share his knowledge, Gage was quick to answer.

Celebrating 150 years of agriculture in Thomson Exhibits, speakers and more Saturday By TOM KOCAL Prairie Advocate TKocal@prairieadvocate.com
THOMSON – More than 15 exhibits, 12 speakers, a science fair, a photo contest and a display of agricultural equipment will highlight the Thomson Sesquicentennial Committee’s Tribute to Agriculture Day, from 9 a.m to 3 p.m. Saturday at the former Thomson High School, 800 South St. Topics will include organic farming, melon producing, weather and future technology in agriculture, pork producers, commodities, and water districts. A John Deere forge from
the John Deere Historic Site in Grand Detour also will be on display. There will be a demonstration by a modern blacksmith using antique tools of the trade and a forge. Potato planters and harvesters will join the John Deere Demonstration outside, where the blacksmith will demonstrate how the self-scouring plow opened the prairie to modern-day farming. “This day is to honor our local agricultural industries and the history of farming in our community,” Committee Chairman Randy Durward said. “Farming has affected the lives of York Township residents since before the beginning of the community.” Luanne Bruckner also
serves on the committee. “The four 100-year farms of York Township will also be honored,” Bruckner said. “Thomson is the Watermelon Capitol of the World, so we are all aware of the impact that agriculture has had on our community.” Speakers will be featured from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. “Steven Stiles from Thomson is an expert on the Indians of York Township and has a great collection of artifacts and information,” Bruckner said. “Other Thomson area speakers are Tim O’Conner, a longtime farmer and biologist at Heirloom Market, who will speak on the future of agriculture. Cindy Hook will present info on Johnson Creek. Curtis Pilgrim, a ‘farm kid’ and
longtime resident of York Township, will tell stories about farming in York Township back in the horse-drawn days. Some wonderful history of the Thomson area will be shared.” The future of agriculture will include a drone demonstration from Kunau Implement and Ryan Heilig. Door prizes will be given. A science fair, pumpkingrowing contest and a photo contest also are planned. WCCI Radio will feature a live show from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the Boy Scouts and 4-H’ers will have a hotdog and taco stand in the cafeteria. Other activities include a pancake breakfast from 7 a.m. to noon at the

Four years ago, she and her husband, Wendell, bought the house to which the former beauty shop, Salon 318, was attached. Now Vicki Moll and Verna Woessner, who operated Salon 318, have retired. Morgan Moll, stylist, graduated from Educators of Beauty in Sterling in 2012, and has been with Klosa ever since. Wendell works for Sullivan’s Foods in Stockton, and the couple like the Shannon area. LANARK — Barn quilts: A splash of color that enhances the beauty of barns, old and new, around the countryside, enjoyed by those who pass by. The Carroll County Hotel Motel Board is developing the Carroll County Barn Quilt Trail in an effort to promote agri-tourism and attract visitors to its rural communities. Before the 1830s, most barns were unpainted because paint was too costly. As paint became more affordable, the Pennsylvania Dutch and Swiss began to paint small patterns on barns to celebrate their heritage and bring good fortune. Originally, these patterns consisted of simple stars, compass roses, or stylized birds from traditional folk art. In many communities today, organizing groups, such as an arts council, tourism bureau, quilt guild, or 4-H club, work together to organize their barn quilts into a trail. Some are guided walks in a downtown area that includes historical buildings. Most often, quilt trails take visitors on a drive through the countryside

A quilt trail may include stops at art galleries, farm stands, wineries, antique stores, and other points of interest that make the journey a daylong event. Connie and Dennis Zink of Savanna own Roberts’ Roost Country Guest House, on Roberts Road between Savanna and Mount Carroll. The business has piqued their interest in tourism. “As a photographer, old barns fascinate me,” said Connie Zink, a hotel motel board member. “Dennis and I just ride around and I take the photos. Ours were at least a little lighter, but still bulky. I am amazed, we never expected those hollow core doors to last!” “I have been working with Blackhawk Waterways CVB and the Carroll County Hotel Motel Board for many years,” Stadel said. “Vivian Curley of Mount Carroll, over the last couple years, has compiled photos and information on many of the existing barn quilts in our area. PEARL CITY — Being afraid of the dark usually is no laughing matter, unless it is the Eastland-Pearl City Theatre production of “Afraid of the Dark,” in which the zany characters of a spy plot — with a twist. Chauncey, played by senior Sam Kempel, and Lillums, played by junior Bronte Wright, arrive at Stone Mansion for their honeymoon. It’s an isolated country estate belonging to his Aunt Alberta, played by sophomore Juli Waugh, and supposedly unoccupied. Chauncey confesses he’s been “afraid of the dark” ever since childhood. Having unburdened himself to his new bride, the lights suddenly go out. When the lights go on again, by a host of crazy characters who seem to have escaped from the local nut house to take up residence in this supposedly deserted mansion. The cast includes Gentry Lessman, Bryant Smargiassi, Aaron Pacheco, Jacob Pacheco, Anicka Stultz, Halle Fransen, Josh Dickman, Alyssa Johnson, Montana Ils, and Cody Kluck. Performances will be at 7 p.m. March 21 and 2 p.m. March 22 in the Pearl City Grade School gym. Admission is $5.

needed by people that have a barn quilt,” said Zink. “We have to make sure we have the right picture with the right address.” While cloth quilts usually are made up of a series of squares of the same pattern placed together, a barn quilt is almost always a single square. A certain barn quilt pattern may be chosen for many reasons, Zink said. Often it is a replica of an actual quilt made by a loved one. A pattern may be selected because of its name. “Corn and Beans” is popular among farmers. Zink plans to create her own unique barn quilt pattern based on a hummingbird that she has drawn and placed inside a standard block. Creative new designs are welcome, but either way, people want to know the name of the block,
which will be listed, and the pattern used as an icon designating the location on the map. “We invite anybody with a barn, or garage, or house quilt, of any size, to be included. In fact, there are several buildings in the area that have barn quilts,” she said. “But the main attraction on other barn quilt trails is the history of the barns. The quilt may be on the old barn, but they have the history of the barn itself on the map. Yes, people want to look at every quilt, but they want the history. That’s what attracts both women and men: Ladies like the quilts, men like the barns.” “This is a very worthwhile project,” Stadel said. ”It’s taken a lot of time, and more to come, but it will be a tremendous asset to the tourism industry in Carroll County.”

MORRISON — Rebecca Green, who spent the last 10 years at CGH Medical Center as marketing and media coordinator, is the new marketing and customer relations manager for the Morrison Chamber of Commerce. She begins her duties Tuesday.
Kim Ewoldsen is the chamber’s executive director. “Rebecca brings a tremendous amount of skill and talent in creating brochures, newsletters, updating website and social media sites, and more,” Ewoldsen said. Green also wrote CGH Foundation campaign materials and articles for the hospital newsletter. She wants her
chamber literature to “attract new businesses and individuals to town.” She also will work in a supporting role with Ewoldsen. Fish and Wildlife Service to open new parcel for public access
Bird seed sale supports conservation efforts
By TONY CARTON For Prairie Advocate SAVANNA — The U.S. Department of the Interior has transferred 21 acres from the Army to U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as part of the Lost Mound Unit, Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge. The move was announced at the March meeting of the Jo-Carroll Depot Local Redevelopment Authority. “As we promised, we are opening everything we can to public access,” Wildlife Refuge Manager Ed Britton said. “Unfortunately, most of what we have is Missis[open burning grounds] or other areas we cannot open to the public.” The parcel’s south boundary is along the north side of the entrance road on Crim Drive, extends north about 1 mile along the Apple River shoreline and has a common boundary with the LRA parcels 3, 3A, 3B and 13. Britton said as many as six public uses are allowed when they are compatible with the established purposes of the refuge and the USFWS mission. Those public uses include hunting, tion, wildlife photography, environmental education and interpretation. Furbearer trapping is also permitted on Lost Mound parcels with a special use permit. “The challenge we have is that we have no place for the public to access,” Britton said. “The fence goes the entire length of it

Britton said the newly transferred parcel is used even that activity is limited by the known contaminants in the neighboring Parcel 5. “Parcel 5 is not going to transfer for years and years,” he said. The LRA approved Britton’s request to grant the USFWS a short-term license for land that would allow as many as 10 parking spaces and an interpretive path leading to Parcel 5. By TONY CARTON For Prairie Advocate SHANNON — The Shannon Village Board heard updates on advances within its newly restructured police department at its March 3 meeting. Interim Police Chief Rick Cass reported the hiring of “They are pretty seasoned veterans,” Cass said. “They’ve all worked with area police departments, so they are familiar with the village. Cass said the department added Gerry Bennett, who works for the Milledgeville and Lanark police departments and was a Freeport Meeker, a former Mount Carand Jason Schwartz, who works with Pearl City and Mount Carroll. They will each work a few hours each month, and are bringing their own uniforms, which will save the village a little money, he said. Village President Bonnie Foust said a new computer was installed for the police and is questioning the softoperate village security. “We don’t currently have the software we need, but it is something we need to get,” Foust said. “Obtaining the correct software will allow us to tie into other police departments. The program costs in the area of $1,500 to $2,000, but we need it, and that’s something to be aware of.”
Cass told the board he was interested in obtaining the Village Police Records Management software. He said Village Police will run on any version of Windows and can be purchased to run on one or more computers, including laptops in squad cars. “It formats all the reports,” would be writing standardized reports that read the same and that the state’s attorney and other agencies can understand and use.” He suggested a further use would be the merging of daily activity reports that would show increased ticketing patterns and allow him to schedule police coverage “There are also a number of mandatory reports that we have to complete to be in compliance with state statutes and federal law. The Village Police program will basically spit them out for us in a timely manner,” Cass said. There is an annual fee and additional fees for each computer using Village Police, but Cass said the software has been in use in the area for more than 20 years and recommended the purchase of the program. Foust directed his recommendation to the Appropriations Committee. The board entered executive session to discuss wages for the new part time
Meters, solicitors, and budget cuts Board member Wayne Gaul reported on problems
with the village’s water usage. He said the village had used slightly more than 55 million gallons in 2014, which computes to 201 gallons per day per resident. But only 35 million gallons were billed, based on meter readings through the sewer system. “There were 20 million gallons that did not go through the sewer system,” Gaul said. “We do have some smaller leaks and we are looking into Gaul suggested a more ing system, where residents would pay for water they use, rather than what runs through the sewer system. The board tasked Gaul with exploring that issue for future meetings. The board recognized an increasing problem with door-to-door solicitation in the village and asked Village Attorney Kipp Meyers to draft an ordinance requiring registration and the implementation of rules for acceptable solicitation practices. “We cannot discriminate against people based on content or what they sell,” Meyers said. “Whether it’s Girl Scout cookies or sales-
men or religious solicitors, they all have to be treated the same.” Foust questioned how solicitors would be informed of the new village ordinance. Posting signs at village entry points was suggested. The board will review the newly written ordinance before it votes on implementation at its April meeting. Discussion on proposed state budget cuts led to passage of a resolution blocking the cuts. Foust said under Gov. Bruce Rauner’s 2016 budget proposals, the village would lose half of its local government distributed fund revenues. “We will go from $74,000 to $37,000, and that is a “These monies come mostly from sales tax and income tax revenue sharing.” The board approved a resolution urging Rauner and the General Assembly to protect the full funding of local governments. At the council meeting, Julia Guerrero said that she cannot allow her children to play in their front yard because of aggressive dogs in the area, and that foul language has created an unpleasant situation. “None of my neighbors have ever talked to me,” Lundy said. “I do not know the Guerreros. The only person I know is a neighbor to the Guerreros, because he started yelling at my son, and when I went out, he turned and went into the house, refusing to talk to me. He was yelling profanities at my son, and refused to speak to me. “No one that has signed a complaint has ever once talked to me — not at all,” Lundy said. Lundy noted that there are at least 15 dogs within a two- or three-block radius.

Stewart tabbed for Criminal Justice Reform Commission
SPRINGFIELD – State Rep. Brian Stewart, R-Freeport, has been named to Gov. Bruce Rauner’s newly created Illinois State Commission on Criminal Justice and Sentencing Reform. The commission is made of up experts from various fields within the criminal justice system
and state legislators. The 27-member commission, led by Rodger Heaton, the governor’s public safety director, will analyze all aspects of the criminal justice system from the initial arrest to reentry into the community. It will look for evidencedbased strategies to reduce the rate of imprisonment, while preserving the public’s safety.
“The current prison system is costly, overcrowded and ineffective,” Rauner said. “We need to reform the system to stop the costly and vicious cycle of recidivism and help those who’ve left prison get the help they need to become productive members of society. This will ultimately save taxpayers money and protect the safety of the public.”

Obituaries Rowline M. Reusch
ELIZABETH – Rowline M. Reusch, 94, of Elizabeth, died Tuesday, March 3, 2015, at Elizabeth Nursing Home. Rowline was born Aug. 15, 1920, the daughter of Ira and Myra (Rindisbacher) Perry in Warren. She graduated from Stockton High School and also attended beauty school in ChampaignUrbana. She married Harlan Reusch on Nov. 2, 1941, in Derinda. Harlan died Jan. 26, 1991. Rowline was a devoted homemaker and spent many years farming with her husband in the Derinda area. She was a 4-H Club leader and a member of the Ladies Aid at Trinity Lutheran Church. Rowline loved to quilt and
work in her garden. She especially loved spending time with her family and friends. Rowline will be dearly missed by her three sons, Richard (Twila) Reusch of Elizabeth; Dan (Dianna) Reusch of Carbondale; and the Rev. Don Reusch of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; four grandchildren, Chad (Wendy) Reusch of Stockton; Mindy (Jerry) Pratt of Elizabeth; Traci Seger of Belleville; and Matthew McCall of Denton, Texas; and six great-grandchildren, Kelsey, Kaitlyn, and Kyleigh Reusch and Nathan, Andrew, and Sarah Pratt. She also was preceded in death by two sisters, Pauline Perry and Nelda Schultz; and one grandson, Chet Reusch. A private family service will be held, with burial in Derinda Cemetery in Elizabeth. Roland F. Stewart MILLEDGEVILLE – Roland F. Stewart, 82, of Milledgeville, passed away Sunday, March 1, 2015, at his home. He was born Dec. 6, 1932, the son of Asa and Ivy (Given) Stewart and the He married Wilma Loechel on May 17, 1953, in Coleta. They were high school sweethearts, and loved each other as much or more after almost 62 years of marriage. Rollie and Wilma purchased Stewart Boom Service in 1967, and he retired in 1995. Rollie was very dedicated to his community, serving on the Milledgeville Fire Department for 26 years; the Milledgeville Community Credit Union Board for 23 years; the Milledgeville School District Board of Education; and many committees at Milledgeville United Methodist Church. After his retirement, he enjoyed help-

20/20 purports that public education cannot be expected to meet the challenges of the 21st century if Illinois schools are not adequately and equitably funded. Adequate ensure that every child in a district has access to a high-quality education. We have evidence to quantify the revenue that a given district needs, per pupil, to educate all students according to best practices. Vision 20/20 argues that this should be the baseline level for adequate funding. Through a combination of local, federal and state sources, we need a system that will keep the promise of adequacy to all our students and schools. Illinois falls short of keeping this promise. For years, the state has not met its constitutional obligation for funding public education at the foundation level that legislators themselves established in law – an outdated number that frankly falls well below the level considered adequate today. Because
This is the last installment in a series about how school administrators in Illinois plan to fulfill the promise of public education relatively low service taxes, other sources have absorbed a disproportionate share of the burden for funding schools. Vision 20/20 does not contend that any district should be restricted from spending above the level Mark Hansen of adequacy, but rather insists that all taxpayers meet a minimum level of burden for educating the state’s children in order that all districts receive adequate per pupil funding as supported through evidence. Registration on for 4-H summer camp OREGON — Registration is due for the Lutheran Outdoor Ministries Center 4-H camp, to be held June 14 to 18. The camp is for boys and girls ages 8 to 15. Children do not have to be a 4-H member to attend. Campers are assigned to retreat villages where they live with other campers their own age and sex. Each retreat village is supervised by trained high school and college age 4-H counselors, many of whom are past campers and 4-H members. LOMC staff and at least one adult University of Illinois Extension representative also oversee campers. LOMC guarding. Campers will be assigned to a pack consisting of campers of all ages. Packs compete against each other in competitions and activities. Each day is divided up into early morning activities, two or three open choice activity periods, and evening campwide activities.

lunch buckets to pack! Recently there was hot lunch served at school and I forgot and sent buckets along to school. Sigh. Every other week there is one day where parents rotate and bring in a hot lunch for the scholars. Gloria will write about that in a future column. Last evening, we lengthened our kitchen table and had a belated birthday meal for son Michael, who turned 22. With Michael’s and son Javin’s families, there were 12 of us around the table. Micah had requested BLT pizza. I also made crusty baked potatoes and Éclair dessert. to Éclair dessert through several of our church ladies who come from Allen County, Indiana. It is a topnotch 5-star rated dessert! I’ll include the recipe in this article. It’s similar to cream puffs. I remember some of us girls helping make cream puffs years ago in a home economics class. Early this morning, Micah, wife Rose, and baby Jeanette, left for Indianapolis where they will board a plane and head for China on a mission trip. They’ll be gone 4-1 /2 weeks. I hope 5 month old Jeanette will enjoy the trip.
Usually she’s a content, cheery baby with a ready smile, although sometimes she’s scared of some strangers. Isn’t it something how secure a baby feels with Daddy and Mom? Rose told me yesterday had gone away with horse and buggy that it wasn’t too cold for Jeanette. She was able to sit up and look out and see the horse. She was so intrigued and fascinated! Rose’s family are horse lovers, so Jeanette just might be the same. My husband David and son Jeriah are planning to join Micah’s family on their mission trip several weeks from now, then return home with them. That means the three girls and I will have to keep the

The girls and I would like to go to Holmes County, Ohio and spend time with my family while the others are on their trip. We’d be gone about 5 days. That means family food and fellowship! 1 cup water 1/2 cup butter 1 cup flour 4 eggs Bring water and butter to a boil. Turn off heat and add flour all at one time. Stir until smooth ball forms. Remove from heat. Let stand for 5 minutes.
