TKI operates 10 manufacturing plants in North America, in addition to an extensive terminal network.

“They have announced they will open a $20 million plant in East Dubuque that will use Rentec’s ammonia product in their process.

TKI will produce a different type of fertilizer than Rentec, but instead of transporting the ammonia, they will get it on-site from Rentec, a great arrangement for both businesses.”

McCarthy said this is the

That meant organizing a local workforce development group that would work with employees to discuss their options, and available funds for training and continuing education.

“We are still working with Highland Community College and the village of Hanover to host an employee event to inform them of these options, as well as additional reimbursement from the federal Trade Act Program for Workers, funded by the U.S. Department of Labor, available for manufacturers who have off-shored. Robertshaw has been accepted and fast-tracked into the

program, which means employees.”

Prison progress

McCarthy received notice late last week that, from 1 to 3 p.m. today, representatives from the Bureau of Prisons and the Small Business administration will host their own event for area businesses to provide information and instructions on conducting business with the Administrative United States Penitentiary Thomson. This is an open-hours event and presentations will be at the AUSP Thomson, 1100 One Mile Road.

Bureau of Prisons staff will discuss topics such as the federal procurement process, the System for Award Management, and FedBizOpps.gov, the federal business opportunity website.

“We have held a series of information events in September, and we will be attending today’s activities.

I anticipate that it will be well attended.

“We have also set up a public rental database in the Cloud that landlords and real estate agents can access to list their available rentals for Thomson prison re-locaters.

Every so often, I email the list to Michelle Gagne, the information director at AUSP Thomson, who posts it and sends links to anybody

that asks her about area rentals. There are about 30 listings posted now.”

Musical tributes locally to ‘Dollar-A-Day Boys’

LANARK – It was the Great Depression. People had lost faith in their country. They didn’t know where their next meal was coming from. They had given up on America. Then came the Civilian Conservation Corps.

Michigan based author Bill Jamerson will present “Dollar-A-Day Boys,” a music and storytelling program about the Civilian Conservation Corps at four area locations next week.

The CCC was a federal works program created by President Franklin Roosevelt in the heart of the Great Depression. During its 9-year run, from 1933 to 1942, more than 3 million young men between the ages of 17 and 25 enlisted across the country. They were known as “Roosevelt’s Tree Army” because they planted more than 3.5 billion trees nationwide. The enrollees lived in work camps run by the Army and were paid $1 a day.

“The CCC was more than a work program,” Jamer-

son said. “It was a relief program.

They were paid $30 a month – a dollar a day – Bill and $25 every Jamerson month went back home, directly to their families. They never saw that money. But that put food on their tables. I have had men tell me, ‘It kept my family alive!’ They had tears in their eyes.”

Locally, there were CCC camps in Mount Carroll, Mount Morris and Savanna.

On June 11, 1933, Camp 627 opened in Savanna and began work on Mississippi Palisades State Park.

Infrastructure, including the shelters at the park, were an important part of the work of the CCC. The CCC also built the lodge at Starved Rock State Park in Utica, did restoration work at the Black Hawk State Historic Site in Oregon, and the Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site near Charleston.

“After speaking to hundreds of people, I ended up writing some songs, because I got tired of talking!” Jamand people just embraced it.

“It is heartwarming to have a CCC alumnus shake my hand, and say, ‘It was the best year of my life. It turned my life around. You’ve got to tell our story. People have forgotten us.’ They were so proud of their work.”

Jamerson’s novel, “Big Shoulders”, follows a year in the life of a 17-year-old from Detroit who enlists in the CCC in 1937. The enrollee joins 200 other young men at a work camp in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. It is a coming-of-age story of an angry teenager who faces the rigors of hard

work, learning to get along coping with a bully.

Some of the songs he performs tell of camp food, the mischief the young men get into in the woods, the story mother, and the hardships of work. The folk songs range from heartwarming ballads to foot stomping jigs.

“The beautiful story about the CCC is, yes, it took young men off the streets, but it fed their families,” Jamerson said. “The average CCC worker had six to seven dependents. Imagine: You’re 17 years old, you’re out in 20-below weather, or miserable. But it was volunteer work. They could leave whenever they wanted.

“The reason they stuck it out, doing this hard work, was love of family. It was because they got the letters from home, their brothers and sisters had food on the

table. But the CCC did two big things: They restored the land with farmers, they built state parks, and planted millions of trees.

But it also restored them morally, inside themselves,” Jamerson said.

His programs in Savanna, Stockton, Lanark and Dixon next week will be primarily about Illinois CCC. “I’ll talk about how workers helped out farmers, how they built the lodge at Starved Rock, the Skokie Lagoons in Chicago and how the project helped reduce crime there, and other Illinois stories.

But what often happens, is someone will stand up and tell their story about their father in the local area.

That’s how I gain more knowledge of the CCC. “I invite people to bring scrapbooks, photo albums, and share their stories. We don’t have too many CCC boys left, unfortunately, but

that’s how I picked up these stories.”

Jamerson’s hour-long program will include watching a video clip from his from his novel and playing original songs about the CCC with his guitar.

“My story is about America’s Greatest Generation – before they went to war,” he said. “People forget that. The CCC gave them job skills and taught them to be disciplined. They became truck drivers, engine mechanics, cooks, and more.

When they were called to World War II, they took those skills with them, and brought them home after the war. Morrison senior allowed early start toward college

MORRISON — Kaitlyn Anderson’s request to graduate early was approved at the Feb. 23 school bard meeting.

The Morrison High School senior plans to pursue a degree in graphic arts.

“I would really like to get a jump start on my future, and pursue my dream,” Anderson National Honor Society, and am working on to start my future as soon as possible, and I a few courses.”

Village nears sale of industrial park land

Agriculture company wants all 30 acres near Route 40

MILLEDGEVILLE – The village is closing in on a deal to sell all 30 acres of its industrial park to a Wisconsin-based biological agriculture company.

near state Route 40, has been vacant since it was established in 2007. The acreage has been rented out as farmland for several years.

“Things haven’t been signed yet, but the holdup is with engineering, so things look very promising,” Wirth said. “This would be great news for the village, because they would purchase the entire industrial park.”

“The company’s target is 10 to 15 jobs here to start,” Wirth said. “But there is certainly potential for more down the road.”

City seeks $650K grant for wastewater treatment fixes

SAVANNA — The City Council is seeking a $650,000 Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity grant to help fund a new $11 million sewer plant and in-system sanitary sewer project.

If obtained, the grant would reduce the city’s yearly debt by $50,000, Sharon Pepin of Community Funding and Planning Services told the council at its Feb. 24 meeting.

Design engineering is complete and the project plans submitted to and approved by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. The application with the IEPA for a low-interest loan, and has secured $2,169,000 in grant funds to be put toward design and construction of the facility, Pepin said.

Savanna and its grant consultant also have begun discussions with the DCEO to identify other available grants.

Of the $11 million price tag, $8.1 million will go to the new waste water treatment facility, while about $2 million is slated for the in-system sanitary sewer improvements component.

Engineering and project administration costs are estimated at $668,000.

Family’s passion leads young entrepreneur to business venture

FULTON – Everyone’s dream is to grow up and do something they love. This is true of entrepreneur Evan Hollewell. Today, Hollewell’s dream has come true. He and his new wife, Jessica, operate their own training barn, Hollow Crest Farm, between Morrison and Fulton.

Raised outside of Milledgeville, Hollewell grew up on his parents’ farm. Steve and Bryan Hollewell and Evan’s brother, Dean, were passionate about horses. He really didn’t have a choice, it was a part of his daily life, but he grew to love the animals and the people who he encountered with them.

“Mom and Dad have done it forever,” Hollewell said.

“I grew up knowing about the business. I was 13 or 14 when I was at a show, and saw everybody working horses and having fun.

That’s when I knew that’s what I was going to do with my life.

“It’s how I met my wife.

Jessica came into my parents’ barn when I was 9 years old. Her dad had given her a choice. He said, ‘I’ll buy you a gocart today, or a horse next summer.’ She said, ‘I’ll take the horse!’

Jessica continued training her horse at the Hollewells’ farm. She and Evan started dating in high school. Her family lived and farmed between Chadwick and Thomson, and she attended Unity Christian School in Fulton, while Evan attended Milledgeville High School.

During his junior high and high school years, Hollewell competed in many local open, county, and 4-H

shows as well as on the Arabian show circuit. As his passion grew, so did his desire to learn more about the breed and how to make a career in it.

Hollewell found opportunities working for trainers during the summer months, and then after graduation in 2008 from Milledgeville High School found employment with three top trainers over a 5-year span to learn the tricks of the trade.

“I graduated on a Friday, had my graduation party on Saturday, and I left my party early to go to a horse show,” Hollewell said. “I got my

In 2013, Hollewell returned home to build a business close to his family. He loved working for the large national barns, but his heart was still here with his family and those he calls family from being in the horses.

“We dated the entire time

that I was running around the country working for other trainers. Finally, I moved back to Milledgeville, knowing that this is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life, and Jessica was who I wanted to spend it with.”

They married March 14.

“You think our cars now are in bad shape, just think what they – no offense to any of the cops – but they don’t know these do a decent job of keeping track of their vehicles. But when you are getting in and out of a vehicle 8 to 12 hours a day, they drive them differently than we drive our cars every day.”

Alderman Bill Sweeney in town still are allowed to take their vehicles home.

“You can do that if I get one available and they live in town and it’s during their work schedule, but if they are on their days off, Dan) Nevills and I get to take them home because called out. That’s because cers living in town now, and we’re going to have four living out of town, so we would be called for assistance.”

The police department also was granted a request for $1,721.06 for a new stun gun.

School board considers energy savings proposal

MORRISON – With energy costs on the rise, the Morrison school district is considering a plan one company says could cut energy costs 25 percent and help modernize its buildings.

At the February meeting, board members heard a

presentation from Sharon Uslan of Opterra Energy, which specializes in showing school districts ways to cut energy costs.

“You have a unique opportunity with the 1 percent sales tax that was recently approved,” Uslan said. “The added revenue removes a lot of the burden and risk for projects.”

She recently toured three Morrison school buildings: Northside and Southside Elementary, and the high school. Simply replacing lights with LED lighting could save $35,000 to $55,000 a year, Uslan said.

Opterra’s proposal also calls for adding vestibules to improve school safety, installing new clocks and

intercoms; and improving the heating/cooling and ventilation system, bathrooms, and locker rooms.

“Most of the items you need done are at the end of useful life,” she said.

They generally compete in regionals. The next steps up are the U.S. and Canadian nationals.

“Our goal is to always get to the nationals. As we compete in shows and regionals, our horses accumulate points.

We plan on getting to the Canadian Nationals this year, and hopefully the U.S., which is like the Super Bowl for horses. To be a U.S. National Champion is the biggest award possible for any horse.

It is so big, with 3,000 horses competing, that it takes two and a half weeks,” he said.

Hollewell is excited as this

new year has brought more horses and people into the barn and the Arabian breed.

Hollow Crest Farm is not only a training facility for horses, but they also offer boarding and lessons.

“Growing up in 4-H, I know how important it is to Hollewell said. “Riding horses isn’t just a simple task. You can’t see what you look like when you are riding; you need someone on the ground to be your eyes. I am excited to have new 4-Her’s beginning in our lesson program.

City seeks grant for 2nd storm siren For Prairie Advocate

MORRISON — Police Chief Brian Melton has applied for a grant for an additional storm siren, to be positioned at the water tower and improve coverage for the sports complex, northern areas of town, and the recreational trail.

The grant, from the 2015 National Safety CouncilComEd Community Safety Program, may cover up to $10,000 of the $25,000 needed. The current siren

does not cover the northern area of the community effectively, Melton told the City Council at its Feb. 23 meeting.

The department has been receiving complaints about people rummaging through trash and recycling containers, Melton said.

Family wants livestock ordinance revised

SHANNON – The planet Earth is home to 19.6 billion chickens, but if the Shannon Village Board continues on its current path, none of them will live in its town.

Shannon resident Tracy Siegner began petitioning the board in September to amend its village ordinance, which bans maintaining or feeding cows, horses, sheep, swine, goats, chickens, ducks, turkeys, geese, rabbits, bees or any other animal or fowl normally kept for agricultural, fur or food production purposes.

Siegner and her children “grandfathered” under a 2012 ordinance. The family needs to replace its aging hens, but cannot under the village rule.

Siegner is not looking to wants only to provide her children with eggs and the opportunity to learn responsibility, she said.

“I’ve been coming to village board meetings for 7 months trying to get this ordinance changed, and have had two meetings with the public safety people to get it passed,” Siegner said.

She said board members have told her to just replace her old birds and not to say anything, but that is not a message she is willing to send to her children.

“I’m trying to do this morally and ethically and come to the board, but they’re trying to throw me under the bus, and I don’t like

Obituaries Duane A. Garkey

Duane A. Garkey, 85, of Polo, passed peacefully on Friday, Feb. 27, 2015, at Pinecrest Manor Nursing Home, Polo, surrounded by his family.

Duane was born in Mount Morris Township on March 21, 1929, and married Carol Jean Kloepping at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mount Morris on Nov. 1, 1953.

Duane was a longtime farmer, a pressman at Kable Printing (Quebecor), sold Renk Seed Corn, and mowed the Fairmount Cemetery for many years after he retired.

He served in the Korean War from 1951 to 1953 on Cheju-do Island as a radio operator. The American Park.

In his free time, Duane loved playing dominoes and cards with family and friends. Duane and Carol also were part of a 500 Card Club and hosted many parties at the farm. They enjoyed taking Tri State bus trips across the country and visited Hawaii in January 1995. Duane also enjoyed cruises to the Caribbean with his son and daughterin-law.

Duane’s 1929 Model A Ford Truck was his most cherished possession. He frequently entered car shows and won dozens of trophies. He also enjoyed driving it in parades with Carol sitting next to him, and his grandkids sitting in the back throwing out (but mostly eating) candy.

Duane was steadfast in his faith and a member of St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church in Polo. He was loving, caring, genuine, honest, funny, and will be missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Carol; daughters Cindy (Mike) Sullivan of Polo, and Jan of Madison, Wisconsin; sons David (Lori) of Winnebago, and Rod (Deb Bryan) of Polo; special family member Bob Venier of Dixon; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and sister, Cheryl Garkey of Polo.

He was preceded in death by his parents Roy and Esther (Sudenga) Garkey, daughter Susan, and grandson Damon.

Special thanks to Pastor Terry Wilder, Dr. Joseph Welty, and the Pinecrest Manor Nursing Home staff who lovingly cared for Duane as well as the family.

The state’s budgetary challenges are no secret, but under Rauner, these challenges actually are being acknowledged. For the governor and the general assembly are starting the budgetary process grounded in the reality of matching revenues with expenditures while paying our required obligations.

He has set a revenue estimate of $32 billion with a clear directive to make that number work.

The governor’s introduced FY16 budget is sobering, but it is built on several core priorities: public safety, education and paying our bills. The general assembly is beginning to review this budget and its impact on Illinoisans and will soon be making recommendations as to our shared priorities.

We face hard times ahead of us, but in the end, we must do what it takes to turn Illinois around.

It was a busy week in full schedule of committee meetings and general assembly sessions, we were able to pass a bill that I sponsored, Scott’s Law Day HB246. This bill designates Dec. 23 of every year as a day to honor our public safety workers and to remind drivers throughout the state to slow down and watch for emergency vehicles parked alongside the road. Scott’s Law originally was enacted in 2002 after Lt. Scott Gillen of the Chicago Fire Department was struck and killed on Dec. 23, 2000, along the Dan Ryan Expressway when a motorist recklessly drove through an accident scene at which Gillen was assisting. This legislation commemorates the date of Gillen and all public safety workers. Let’s not endanger the individuals who dedicate their lives to protecting us.

I was also pleased to see

a strong show of support by our local Farm Bureau members this past Wednesday at the Illinois Farm Bureau event. I am working to make agriculture and agribusiness a legislative priority in ful that individuals from our region take the time away from their businesses and farms to lobby for an industry that is at the heart of our region’s economy.

In conclusion, I wanted to take the opportunity to congratulate the Dakota High School wrestling team. They accomplished a remarkable feat by returning home with six state titles in Class 1A, the most ever won by the program in one season.

Congratulations to the coaching staff and wrestlers for their hard work and determination that led to six state champions: Carver James, J.J. Wolfe, Alec Henze, Printice Walls, Nathan Olsen, and Greg Krulas.

Carroll County 4-H events for March MOUNT CARROLL — Registration is underway for 4-H Camp 2015 at Camp Benson.

The annual 4-H and FFA Livestock and Dairy judging contests will be held March 21 at the Carroll County Highway Garage, west of Mount Carroll on state Route 64.

Bi-County’s 24 students have a wide range of intellectual challenges, such as Down syndrome and autism. Most of their classes are at the Whiteside Area Career Center, and, like most teens, they hang out mostly with their classmates, and so usually don’t get the opportunity to

attend prom.

“They have watched other students go to prom, and it’s something they have wanted to do for a while,” said Kim Martin, who, along with fellow life skills teacher Taylor Breedlove, organized the event.

“Every year, we may have different students that will come into our program. This will open a big door of opportunities for them.”

SPRINGFIELD – As educators across Illinois prepare to begin administering the federal Common Core assessment tests, a Senate resolution encourages the state Board of Education to opt out of the Common Core State standards until a thorough review of associated costs can be conducted.

Senate Resolution 89 also advances the creation of a state plan identifying how to provide the funding necessary for school districts to comply with the controversial new Common Core standards.

The Common Core State Standards will make dramatic changes in the educational standards for Illinois students. Many school districts have expressed concerns relating to the costs associated with administering the online-standards testing, which require specific infrastructure and technological upgrades, as well as the cost of the new textbooks needed to teach the Common Core curriculum. the Common Core State Standards Initiative in 2010, but since that time, three states have opted out and dozens more are considering legislation that would repeal their involvement.

Senate Bill 846 would require an employer’s workers’ compensation insurance to pay a claim only if the employee’s injury was caused primarily by a workplace accident. Medicaid legislation seeks accountability – and taxpayer savings Responding to new reports that Illinois paid millions for medical services for people already recorded as dead, legislation has been introduced intending to weed out Medicaid waste, fraud, and abuse; make the system work for the people who truly need the benefits; and save Illinois tax dollars.

SB815 states that the Department of Healthcare and Family Services must contract with a third-party vendor to examine Illinois’ Medicaid rolls. That vendor would make sure Medicaid recipients on the list are

determining whether the person is alive.

The Illinois Auditor General reported in early February that DHFS paid $3.7 million for medical services to about 1,100 people already recorded as dead. Although the state says almost 100 percent of the payments will be recovered, Medicaid reform proponents point to the multimillion dollar snafu as reason for more concentrated redetermination efforts. Similarly, the AP reported in early 2014 that a state audit found an estimated $12 million had been paid for medical services for deceased people.

In 2013, a state-hired private contractor, Maxi220,000 people it said should be dropped from the Medicaid rolls. Illinois then removed more than 114,000 from the system.

ComEd investigation

Serious allegations that ComEd may have improperly used ratepayer funds prompted state Sen. Dan Duffy, R-Lake Barrington, to call on Attorney General Lisa Madigan and Illinois Commerce Commission Chairman Brien Sheahan to take immediate action to protect ComEd ratepayers.

A Feb. 21 Chicago Tribune article reported ComEd, which delivers power to 70 percent of the state’s population, allegedly used ratepayer funds to make charitable contributions that some say appear to also further the utility’s political agenda.

While ComEd admits that it has made charitable contributions to about 600 community organizations ranging from the Chicago Urban League to the United Way, it does

By Gloria Yoder Early this past Wednesday morning, things began stirring in our Amish community. Each year, as a church, we gather for a hogbutchering. Yes, it’s a major undertaking, yet well worth it, as it supplies us with meat for much of the year.

Everyone has items to bring along. Some furnish stuffers, grinders and tables, while others bring more basic items such as butcher aprons, knives, larger containers and totes, as well as spices and seasoning mixes for stuffed sausage, bologna or breakfast sausage.

Throughout the day everything gets mixed together, therefore marking your items is a must. Like my Mom used to say, “Everything gets marked but my children!”

There’s something special about joining friends, working together and accomplishing a lot in a short time. A day like this also requires a lot of planning and organizing. The men take turns coordinating it. This year was my husband Daniel’s turn. He enjoys challenges as such and, of course, I think he did a wonderful job!

This year there were 23 hogs to butcher. Quite a bit of venison also was brought in to be mixed with pork and used for bologna, sausage, etc. This year Daniel and I made several batches of deer sausage. We were pleased with how well it turned out.

On Tuesday before the butchering, the men, boys, and some of the girls got a head start by dressing the pigs and getting bologna ready for the smoker early the next morning. Wednesday proved to be a beautiful day for butchering, not frigidly cold nor too warm for all the meat.

I’ll give you a little outline of the day. After working several hours, everyone takes a break while one of the men shares a brief devo-

tional and leads in prayer.

Next, a warm breakfast is served. Several ladies had prepared delicious breakfast casseroles that were layered with potatoes, scrambled eggs, sausage gravy, and cheese sauce. We also had apple sauce, baked goods, and yogurt.

Soon everyone resumes back to their jobs again.

A lot of us have the same jobs from year to year. For example, while 15 to 20 people work on deboning, several are grinding. A few ladies are taking charge of mixing the different seasonings for the pork and venison. Several people are while others put it on racks to be placed in the smoker.

A few experienced men and boys run the smoker. After it has been removed from the smoker, a couple of people are responsible for quickly cooling it down.

The list of tasks goes on.

One of my favorite parts is what’s happening outdoors.

A huge kettle is placed fat is cooked before being put through a press to be turned into cracklings and lard. Once the kettle has been emptied, the water is dumped into it along with bones that have been trimmed off. After it has cooked, until the meat is tender, the school children are summoned around a table where they help one another pick the leftover bits of pork off the bones.

This is then used for “pan pudding” and liverwurst.
