Spreading handshakes from the heart Random acts of kindness define Eastland Girl Scouts

By TOM KOCAL Prairie Advocate TKocal@prairieadvocate.com SHANNON – What started as a way to earn their Power of One award has blossomed into a project that may affect hundreds with its message of sharing warm winter scarves, gloves and hats.

Girls Scouts from troops 1211, 387, 5302 and 5055 in the Eastland communities of Lake Carroll, Lanark, and Shannon worked on their “Agent of Change” Girl Scout journey last year to earn their Power of One award. But they didn’t stop there, expanding their power into their communities through a series of life lessons.

Katie Reifsteck and Kathy Spong are the leaders of Junior Girl Scout Troop 5055.

“For their Power of One award, the girls discovered and shared powerful stories of forgotten women or girls from around the world who mobilized others and made a difference, discovering all the ways their own strengths and powers helped them create change in the world,” Reifsteck said.

Taking steps to earn their Power of Team award came next. As a group, the girls decided to develop a Take Action Project that reached into the community network to solve a problem, together with community members. The team project was then put into action for their Power of Community award. Reifsteck said they started something that snowballed into a noticeable change in their world.

“In December at our Christmas party, we brought new hats, gloves, and scarves to be donated,” said Junior Girl Scout Madison Warner. We went around Lanark and left a few of them as ‘RACK’ items — random acts of Christmas kindness — at a restaurant and at people’s homes.”

“It got so cold again, so we are doing more random acts of kindness,” said Junior Girl Scout Riley Crichton. “We tied scarves and gloves to light poles in downtown Shannon on Thursday, and more in Lanark, with a poem pinned to them, saying that anyone that is in need of

some warmth can take one.”

“The girls learned about the power of one, power of team, and power of community,” Spong said.

“The girls learned that each one of them had ‘super powers’ and that they can and will be using them to change the world.”

The girls are continuing to use their super powers by teaming up with other Girl Scout troops everywhere through newspaper articles, word of mouth, and Facebook.

“We would like to personally challenge you to help spread the warmth and love around you,” Spong said. “Already we have received photos from other cities in the area putting out scarves and we hope to see them in other states, too.”

“We have also asked our family and friends to help spread the word,” said Junior Girl Scout Natalie Reifsteck. “Sometimes, out of one kind act, a chain reaction occurs and something totally unexpected happens.”

“This is so true. Our community Girl Scouts have lots of helpers,” said Leader Reifsteck. “They may be a mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, teacher, community member, business owner, a worker, mayor, peers, students, news reporter, or a neighbor. They are all around us. Some you see with the girls, but there are many that help behind the scenes.

All are important roles. Without everyone sharing in this we could not do it all.”

They are a busy group. Other community service projects the troops conducted last year include collecting school supplies to give away to children at the Celebrate

Lanark event along with free face painting, painted fire hydrants during Paint the Town, donated blankets, and joined with Eastland area Cub and Boy Scouts during their annual Lighting the Way to End Hunger food drive. They also held a toy drive, with toys sent with Christmas food baskets, participated in the Shannon Blue Mass for the fallen of 9/11, made nonskid socks for nursing home residents, and have even more planned for this year.

“With four troops, that makes 34 girls working together, changing the world,” said Reifsteck.

The Girl Scout Slogan, used since 1912, is ‘Do a good turn daily.’

The slogan is a reminder of the many ways girls can contribute positively to the lives of others.

“And the girls discovered what the Girl Scout Law and true heroines have in common.”

“You never know how far a little kindness will go,” Leverton said.

“We want to honor the men and women with ties to the Thomson area who have served in our nation’s armed forces,” Linda said.

“We have several potential sites in mind. It has also come to our attention this past weekend that a site may be donated, but it’s not “A site being considered on state Route 84 would be highly visible.

But there is also a possible site on Main Street close to the York Township Library,” she said.

MOUNT CARROLL – The Carroll County Veteran’s Assistance Commission board of directors voted unanimously Thursday to sue the county for what the agency considers to be too little funding for employee salaries.

This year’s budget shows a 17 percent increase over last year’s, but the VAC consistently has lobbied the board for more.

VAC board members also accuse the county board of trying to micromanage the agency.

An account for donations to the Thomson/York Township veterans memorial was established at Savanna-Thomson State Bank, starting with two donations totaling $700, Linda said.

“One was from the United Way fund at the Exelon power plant in Cordova, and the other was from an anonymous local resident.”

“We’re hoping everything comes together quicker that anticipated,” Linda said.

“Inspired by nearby communities who have honored their veterans with memorials that beautifully express the gratitude of its citizens, this group was formed to do the same for veterans from the Thomson and York Township area,” Mike said in a news release.

“The committee wants to take the needed time to raise the necessary funds to produce a memorial that is a source of pride for Thomson, and tells people passing through the village that its citizens understand that freedom isn’t free.”

Mount Carroll seeeks volunteers for MAPPING Project will develop community plan for economic development, other matters

By TOM KOCAL Prairie Advocate TKocal@prairieadvocate.com MOUNT CARROLL – Where are we now? Where do we want to be? How are we going to get there?

How do we make it happen and maintain the momentum?

These questions, and many more, will be addressed as Mount Carroll-area citizens prepare for the start of Management and Planning Programs Involving Nonmetropolitan Groups, or MAPPING, for their community.

A steering committee was formed after the MAPPING program was approved by the city in January. The program, offered by the Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs at Western Illinois University, helps communities plan economic and other development. Sherry Morel is chairman, and is joined by Anna Gray, Dan Brinkmeier, Laura Miller, Stephanie Samuels, Elizabeth McMillan and John Swiech.

Morel and her husband Jim moved to Mount Carroll from St. Charles in winter 2013; they were eager to meet new people and get involved in local projects.

“We didn’t know a soul, it was winter time, and we needed something to do,” Morel said. “We have met some wonderful people so far.”

Morel spoke with Laura Miller, owner of Dabluz Boutique and active in the Mount Carroll Chamber of Commerce, about the town’s annual Christmas Walk. They discussed some ideas from St. Charles’ events that Morel thought may work in Mount Carroll, and that gave her the bug to do more. Then she read about Lanark’s MAPPING program. She called Lanark Mayor John Huggins to discuss the program, and the ball started rolling.

“John Huggins is wonderful, by the way,” Morel said. “He came to my house to talk, met with our steering committee, and really got us started. He told us the results of what happened in Lanark. He gave

us a good boost.”

After speaking with Gisele Hamm, the program manager for MAPPING at WIU, Morel and the group presented the idea to the Mount Carroll City Council, which approved it.

“The planning sessions will also revisit ideas from the 2007 People For Progress program that Mount Carroll participated in,” Brinkmeier said. “That’s a long time ago when you’re looking at community development. Some PFP goals have been accomplished, others may not work today. So it’s time to take a fresh look at our town.”

“The MAPPING concept is still completely separate from the PFP,” Swiech said. “PFP came to an end, and there are still some ongoing projects, but it was not in the forefront of peoples’ minds when Swiech has been active in Mount Carroll development since the 1950s with the chamber of commerce, Main St. USA projects from the 1980s, and Carroll County tourism and economic development efforts. He recently was elected as interim president of the Mount Car-

roll Development Corp. after the the development of Market Street Commons in the former Kraft Building.

“It’s always different,” Swiech said. “You have different people at different times with different thinking. It’s a good thing. With the MAPPING, there is almost all new people in the group. Even if we cover a lot of the same issues and problems, we’re going to think about them differently.”

“That’s what makes this steering committee so great,” Gray said.

“I have only been here for seven years. Sherry is relatively new to Mount Carroll. She inquired about what she could do to help, and found out about the work that Nancy Gmitro and Thelma Sweich have been doing to beautify downtown Mount Carroll. That got Sherry thinking. As chair of the committee, she will be looking at things with a fresh, new approach.

“We have accomplished a lot in the past few years. PFP proved that there had been action in Mount Carroll, and the foundation for more progress has been set. But we are

open to new ideas for marketing this community. And so far, the spirit of the people that have shown an interest is great. It’s very exciting.”

“I want to emphasize that these visioning sessions are for all of Mount Carroll, not just Market and Main streets,” Morel said. “It’s for the whole community. We’ve had some people say, ‘Don’t forget about us,’ and that’s why it is so important that as many people as possible participate. There is just so much potential. People are motivated. I think we can accomplish a lot of things.”

MAPPING training begins March 26, followed by four sessions April 9, 16, 23 and 30.

Participants will identify three community, an action plan for implementation, and eventually form groups to begin work on the goals and projects.

“I’m from Mount Carroll, and want to see where this goes,” Brinkmeier said. “We’re looking for a fairly broad representation of different types of people, not only in town, but the surrounding rural areas.”

By TOM KOCAL Prairie Advocate TKocal@prairieadvocate.com SAVANNA – Embrace winter’s beauty through outdoor exploration and indoor inspiration at Winter Trails and Naturalist Tales – Driftless Region, a guided winter hike at the Mississippi Palisades State Park in Savanna.

The talk-and-walk event costs $25, and will start at 10 a.m. Saturday in the banquet room of Manny’s Pizza, 211 Main St. in Savanna. The event is hosted by the University of Illinois Extension.

Participants will hear presentations by renowned naturalists Bill Shilts, founding executive director of the Prairie Research Institute, and Mike Eickman, ornithologist at Sand Bluff Bird Observatory.

Shilts worked for the Canadian Geological Survey for most of his professional life, which started in the mid-1960s. He was a research scientist with various projects in Canada relating to glaciation before taking on similar roles in the U.S. In 1995, he left Canada and was hired to become chief of the Illinois State Geological Survey at the University research group, he worked with some university board members to develop the Prairie Research Center in 2008, also on the university campus. In October, he left the position of executive director to focus on his research career.

“Glaciation is one of the more fascinating areas of geology,” Shilts

said. “In putting this presentation together, I had a couple of realizations about why the Driftless Area exists. What caused the area to be environmental issues in the area?”

Shilts said that many of the issues are water related, because unlike other parts of Illinois that have 200 to 300 feet of cover dirt, or what Shilts calls “geological sediment,” the Driftless Area has little or no cover.

“Without that cover, you get issues with karst and groundwater.

I’ll be talking about why, through the many glaciations, that area was spared, so to speak. A lot of people believe it was spared because it’s high ground, but that’s not the reason.”

Eickman is vice president and ornithologist at Sand Bluff Bird Observatory, north of Shirland in northwestern Winnebago County.

He also teaches ornithology for Extension’s Master Naturalist program.

“My presentation will be primarily for the ‘naturalist tales’ portion of the day,” Eickman said.

“The spring bird migration will be my topic, including the neotropical and passerine birds that are begin-

ning to head north through this area.”

Eickman said neotropical birds come from the biogeographic region that includes southern Mexico, Central and South America, and the West Indies. Passerines are often referred to as a perching birds, and make up more than half of all bird species.

“We trap between 4,000 and 5,000 migrating birds every year,” Eickman said. “We’ll start putting are starting to move north already.”

Sand Bluff Bird Observatory is within Colored Sands Forest Preserve and is one of the largest

small-bird banding operations in the country that is open to the public.

A pizza and taco buffet lunch will be served. Following lunch, a caravan will head to Mississippi Palisades State Park to take a guided winter hike led by local Master Naturalist volunteers. Mississippi Palisades is known for its interesting geology and varied animal life within the park and adjoining river areas.

“Winter Trails and Naturalist Tales is a great event that encourages people to go ahead and embrace winter, if only for a day,” she said.

“Mississippi Palisades is never more peaceful or magical than when blanketed with a fresh cover of snow, and February is the perfect month to see eagles feeding at the river or fresh animal tracks on the trails.”

West Carroll ponders free lunches, waiving fees

Superintendent Craig Mathers commented as a lead-in to the report that while this proposal had been looked at previously, at that time, it had been deemed “not an economically sound plan,” but that as the number of West Carroll students on the free and reduced program goes up, it begins to look more attractive.

Weems detailed the community eligibility provision, which would

allow qualifying buildings to receive a free breakfast and lunch meal. She said West Carroll is not a qualifying school. To qualify, the district would need to assemble a list of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, income eligible Medicaid, foster students, homeless, runaways, migrants and Head Start assistance. If that list meets a certain percentage based on program criteria, the participating school could then qualify for a number of meals for free reimbursement for all students.

In order for this program to be cost effective for the district, West Carroll would need to show more students participating in all schools.

The increases in participation is anticipated because the meals would be offered for free. The primary school, for instance, would need to

see a 6 percent increase in students eating breakfast and lunch for the program to pay for itself.

Mathers said he thought that increase would be doable at the primary school, but doubted the necessary 46 percent increase at the high school could be achieved. The middle school would need to see a 14 percent increase to be cost effective.

Mathers said no action was necessary at this time. He noted that the district still had a month to crunch numbers with the various formulas to see what might best the district is down about $47,000 in its lunch program fund. According to state guidelines, you have to lose money in your lunch program, “But you don’t have to lose that much money,” Mathers said.

“If there’s a way we could generate more income into the program,

feed kids, so that they’re not hungry, it makes sense if you take a look at the primary building as a pilot. Then maybe expand it in future years, and both sides win. You win in the revenue side, but you also win in the fact that you’re providing a better service for families and our kids.”

Weems also told the board that in order to comply with requirements set by the Federal National School Lunch program of the USDA, the district will need to raise its prices across the board this year by 25 cents per paid lunch or risk having to send back federal funds.

Weems added that this is an issue due not only to federal standards, but also because of the large amount of West Carroll students on the “free and reduced” program,

which Mathers said, “is basically causing us to raise prices on those who do pay for lunches in order to get our ratio where the federal government wants it.”

Waive district fees?

Mathers asked the board if they wanted to go with the traditional approach when dealing with district fees, which was to set them at a certain amount and let that rate stand for a few years, or perhaps look at them year to year depending on what’s going on with the district. He said an activity fee had traditionally been avoided because of the large amount of students on the free and reduced program in the district.

Activities at the Senior Center Recycling Senior Service earns a great deal of money each year through the efforts of those who gather newspapers and aluminum cans in their communities, and those who bundle the paper and haul it to the local distribution centers. We need more help with this project.

The “gathering” people work just a couple of hours a month in their communities. The “bundlers” work at the Senior Center just about any day when they have an hour or two to spare. And the “loaders/haulers” help load and/or haul the papers to the distribution center.

Pool players Pool players gather Thursday at 10 a.m. every week. Do you enjoy playing pool, but have no one to play with? Do you need to sharpen your skills? If so, the Senior Center has a pool table on the lower level. There are also balls and cue sticks. All we need are players. No reservation is needed.

Quilters The quilters are here every Thursday from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.

They welcome anyone who wants to join them.

Grandparents and Other Relatives Raising Children The GORRC support group will meet March 24. Free lunch, an activity funded by the Illinois Department on Aging, will be provided at 12:30 p.m., and reservations are required. Call 815-244-1800 or 866-214-1959 for reservations.

Seniors Around the County Great River Outreach The Great River Outreach offers a delicious meal, friendship, and good conversation at two locations. In Savanna, food is served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, at the former Chestnut Park School near Poopy’s, south of town on state Route 84. In Mount Carroll, food is served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Carroll United Methodist Church.

Any age is welcome. Donations are accepted but not required. Penny Von Essen cooks for both locations and food is brought to Mount Carroll. Volunteers are involved in this endeavor. Why eat alone? Consider joining the group often!

Not every person has the skills or abilities to be a teacher.

This is true of any profession.

Even those who have the talent, interest, and required college degree do not enter the profession as master teachers; they have to continuously learn and improve in their craft.

As both the beneficiaries and the patrons of public education, we must acknowledge the importance of making teaching an attractive career option. Then, if we are successful in attracting highly talented individuals, we need to keep them in the profession and help them reach their full potential.

While these goals might seem obvious, consider the stakes. Virtually every child in our state is going to attend school from ages 5 to 18, longer for those who attend preschool. During that time, they will receive instruction facilitated by 40 to 50 different teachers.

The opportunity to receive a quality education is a promise that we make to every student, a promise that cannot be kept if we are unable to recruit and retain effective teachers to challenge and support them. Shannon speed limit raises the ire of residents

By TONY CARTON For Prairie Advocate MOUNT CARROLL — The Carroll County Board directed Carroll County Highway Department engineer Kevin Vandendooren to remove a speed limit sign in Shannon and conduct a speed study at his earliest convenience.

Contentious discussion occurred at Thursday’s meeting over the speed limit set by Vandendooren on a stretch of the recently reconstructed Shannon Route between state Routes 64 and 72.

Vandendooren had posted a 30 mph speed limit on the roadway, but met opposition from a small group of residents who asked that no speed limits be posted, saying they had been driving Shannon Route

for many years and felt the newly imposed speed limit was restrictive and unnecessary. They also questioned the legality of the posting since the speed limit is posted only on one side of the road.

Referencing an Illinois statute, Vandendooren said 30 mph would be an appropriate speed since it would be uniform and consistent with speed limits posted on other county highways that traverse towns and villages. He noted the stretch of road posted was within the Shannon village limits that included a school bus stop and pickup point.

Vandendooren requested and received board approval for consideration as appropriate for spring road weight limit postings in late February. He also submitted the department’s 2015 bridge and roads

Vandendooren said he anticipates purchasing slightly more than 6 acres of right of way lands in conjunction with the Ideal Road bridge reconstruction project. He said the project is moving forward, and a number of required reports have been submitted and approved

by Illinois Department of Transportation. A materials list from Wendler Engineering are nearing completion as well. The department is also updating the county website at www.carroll-county.net with the most current design plans.

The Galena Street Bridge replacement project in Mount Carroll is in early stages of design and approval. A November 2016 letting date is planned for the project, but the department will not undertake

The 4-H Foundation has received a $30,000 donation from ADM Cares, a part of the Archer Daniels Midland Co. The “I Think Green Program” was established to teach how living things interact with each other and with their environment. More than 1,350 youth were involved in one or more of the three curriculums, the donation, the program will add two new curriculums, nature detectives and carnivorous plants.

senior high school opportunities to extend learning beyond current 4-H project work into the world of handson research. We can’t collect them from 65 percent of the people that come to the district anyway. Why should we want 35 percent of the people supporting the other 65?”

Highland added he wasn’t explicitly advocating this, he was just throwing the idea out for discussion purposes. He agreed with board member Dawn Rath who said if fees were raised, it should be a modest amount. No action was taken on this item.

Tech report: Care of laptops a concern

Technology Director Brad Field said, “The kids need to do a better job of taking care of their laptops, and this is not pointed at to do a better job of paying attention to what their kids are doing with their laptops when they are in their classrooms.” He mentioned damage to screens and keyboards are examples of the type of damage his department is seeing.

Out of 103 reportable issues related to students’ devices and laptops, 45 were billable issues, which necessitated sending them to Bytespeed for repair. The high school had 25 such issues, and the middle school, 20. The remaining 58 of 103 issues were not related to the student’s fault, Field said.

Students sign an agreement stating that for every occurrence, the students are responsible for up to $100 of repair costs. He said invoices have already been sent out to several parents. Mathers asked if perhaps going to some sort of insurance plan might not be an option to consider. No formal action was taken on this issue.

The board engaged in a lengthy discussion over its zoning ordinance which stipulates the minimum lot size for single family dwellings, before deciding further study and discussions were in order, making no decisions on changes to the current ordinance.

Chairman Kevin Riebel reappointed Peg Haffey to the Carroll County Housing Authority, Mike Melhus to the Jo-Carroll Enterprise Zone board and Lorie Whitmarsh to the 708 board.

The next county board meeting is scheduled for 9 a.m. March 5 in the small courtroom of the Carroll County Courthouse.

Vanderdooren also identified seven culverts in need of replacement in the county. He expects to replace three of those this year at a cost not exceeding $40,000. Road maintenance outlined expenditures of $550,000 for proposed road maintenance and construction funds planned for 2015. The board approved appropriation of both funds.

Savanna’s upcoming plans for sidewalk renovation on Wacker Road. The city of Savanna has received a $160,000 grant for the project, and the total project cost should come in at about $231,000.

Savanna share is $71,000. The project should begin in spring/ summer of 2016.

The board voted to unanimously approve a proposal to exchange eight 2014 71 passenger Blue Bird buses for eight 2016 new 71 passenger Blue Bird buses The board will discuss options for replacing Mathers, who has announced his retirement in 2016. Several options are available, including using an outside agency, consider internal candidates, employ an interim superintendent, or share a superintendent with a neighboring district. The board favored utilizing the IASB for its search, and Highland said he would begin the process.

The Board passed a resolution to support Vision 20/20, which Mathers said is “a way to be very proactive with children’s education in the state of Illinois.”

Four hundred school districts have already passed this notion in the state.

West Carroll board mulls combining bus routes

By MICHAEL MILLER For Prairie Advocate MOUNT CARROLL — West Carroll Transportation Director Bob Nolan has a few busing ideas that may add another day to the prekindergarten schedule without any added costs.

With direction from District Superintendent Craig Mathers, Nolan is researching these ideas and needed board direction whether to continue as he presented this information at its February meeting.

Three other contacted districts use their K-12 buses to transport pre-K children, and Nolan said he

was initially looking at the same concept after investigation found that this approach would, in fact, add buses to the schedules. This arrangement would make the idea “cost neutral,� Nolan said, because the state transportation reimbursement would pay for the additional buses and labor needed.

Nolan said he had developed a hybrid notion, where he could use existing buses for pre-K or kindergarten only, and put some pre-K kids on the buses with K-12 routes. Mathers asked about route length, and Nolan said that pre-K routes run 1 hour 20 minutes to an hour and a half, and would not be

lengthened by the new plan.

Mathers said that under this arrangement the morning and evening routes would become reimbursable by the state, but not the afternoon route. This method would also see additional costs offset by state reimbursements, but he added that the advantage gained would be an extra day of transporting on Friday. He said that the attendance for pre-K on Fridays is not good, which may well be linked to the lack of transportation on that day.

Board member Beverly Kilpatrick had no issues with the plan. “I’m good with it,� she said. She later commented that she had put

her 3-year-old son on the bus with high school students who went to the area vocational center.

Board member Jessica Edwards disagreed. “I’m not good with it, at all. If it’s not going to save us money . . . then I really don’t like it just because the way that it’s set up right now.

We have 3-year-olds in preschool.

Those kids are getting on the bus and they’re getting strapped in with a seat belt. There’s a lot more one-on-one attention that way and there’s a lot fewer kids on the bus . . . What if you have 15 kids on a route bus?�

Nolan said that no more than

Mathers said no action was needed immediately, and they would continue to research the matter, keeping in mind the board’s comfort level with the idea of gaining 20 percent at the instructional level, while adding a day of transport for the pre-K kids.

Shelling usually started early in the mornings and maybe done by mid- to late morning, mostly so the head of the day wasn’t so bad.

You would get wagons and things like that ready the day before, and maybe move livestock around if you needed to blow husk in a cattle or hog yard, as it made the best bedding.

If you had a good corn picker, you shouldn’t have much husk, anyway. show up with the sheller, and then the neighbors were shortly behind, as some saw or heard Harold go by with the sheller. Everyone worked feverishly to get everything set up truck arrived to start hauling corn.

could stay so calm, day after day shelling corn. Everything had to be just so for it to run smoothly. You never knew what would happen.

When you were shelling corn, lots of things could go wrong, but seldom did.

Harold always had his equipdon’t know if I can think of more than once or twice in all the times I helped shell that it was because of sheller trouble.

I have to say, I think of all the

things I miss most, it’s shelling corn. Not picking load after load of ear corn in the fall, but the fellowship and camaraderie you had with family, friends and neighbors on corn shelling day. There was always lots of laughing and jokes, hard work to get a job done, and almost always there was good food waiting for you when you got all the work done.

I don’t know, call me sentimental, but I think maybe we have not advanced as much into the future,

for the better. We seem to have lost out on the helping of your fellow man, just to be working for the man!

Seems to be a big resurgence into plowing days, and harvesting corn the way it was done in the past.

Is it just so we don’t forget how it was done, or is it maybe because we miss some of the fun we used to have? I know corn shelling is all but a thing of the past in most parts, but hopefully being able to help a friend or neighbor in need isn’t.

Busy Wife Potatoes

Scrub or peel potatoes (1 large potato per person). Cut in half.

Put approximately 1 inch water in a kettle, add potatoes, cover and simmer until soft. The cooking time will vary on the size and amount of your potatoes (approximately 25 minutes for 5 potatoes).

Mash them with a fork on your plates. Sprinkle with salt, pepper or whatever seasoning you wish. Spread with butter and sour cream, cream cheese (softened) ranch dressing or barbecue sauce.

Very simple, very tasty. I love dip and sauces so I like having a variety. Sweet Vidalia onion and sweet and sour sauce are a few of my favorites to eat with potatoes.
