Obituaries Letters and Commentary Hazel Strauch

CHADWICK – Hazel Strauch of Chadwick appreciated her span of life from WWI, silent movies, horse-drawn wagons, to automobiles, airplanes, space travel and the internet. She always enjoyed the simple things in life, like talking around the dinner table. At the age of 98, Hazel passed away Thursday, Feb. 4, 2016, at Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Mount Carroll.

Hazel was born May 9, 1917, in Salem Township, the daughter of Aaron and Tillie (Sack) Schneider.

She grew up on the family farm, attending Daggett Country School. She was a teenager during the Great Depression and fondly remembered when her dad would hitch up a team of horses and take the family to Mount Carroll for shopping, once a month. Mother would take eggs to town to help and yeast. She also fondly remembered the advent of silent movies with words under the pictures and Mrs. Mernice Legel playing the piano. On Oct. 16, 1937, Hazel married Richard Strauch in Mount Carroll. They celebrated 39 years of marriage. Richard passed away Nov. 29, 1976.

Hazel worked at General Electric in Morrison for 18 years, and at Elkay in Savanna for a few years. She was a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Chadwick, where she taught Sunday school, the American

Hazel will be dearly missed by her son, Dennis (Betty) Strauch of Mount Carroll; two daughters, Sherie (William) Leesman of Galt, and Lindy (Craig) Iben of Clinton, Iowa; a daughter-in-law, Janice Strauch of Chadwick; 12 grandchildren; 17 greatgrandchildren; one greatgreat-grandson; one brother, Richard (Evelyn) Schneider of Mount Carroll; and one sister, Florence Smith of Mount Carroll. Hazel is preceded in death by her husband, Richard; a son, Gary; a brother, Arthur at 5 years; a great-grandson, Levi Leesman; and a brother-in-law, Glenn O. Smith.

West Carroll board will place facility tax on March 15 ballot

The West Carroll Board of Education understands the impact on local taxpayers to support local educational needs at a time when state support is being diminished. In order to investigate ways to reduce local property taxes, the West Carroll board voted unanimously to support placing the County Schools Facility Tax on the March 15 ballot. The West Carroll Board of Education voted publicly to use the funds in this manner; one-third toward bond reduction, one-third to current facility needs, and one-third to future facilities projects.

The funds will be used for heating and ventilation systems, health and life-safety projects, school security, projects (lighting and windows), roof replacements, asbestos abatement,

and planned projects to maintain the facilities. Legally, the funds must be used for capital improvements or property tax reduction.

The funds may not and will not be textbooks, buses, or operating expenses.

Because counties around us have already passed and implemented a school facilities tax, Carroll County residents who shop in Clinton, Iowa, Galena, or Sterling are already assisting those schools with facility upgrades and repairs. The tax allows the local schools and residents to shift away from property taxes to support school facilities. Non-residents and visitors to Carroll County will support upgrades and maintenance to your local schools by spending dollars in your local businesses. The facility work will also support the local

economy by using local venders, when possible, to complete the work.

The revenue will allow Carroll County school districts to provide the facilities necessary to support a 21st century education, which is critical to ensuring your children, your grandchildren, and neighbors have the tools needed to compete in a changing economy. The sales tax revenue would be allocated to local schools based on student enrollment.

The revenue will fund school improvements without increasing property taxes.

Sheriff’s Department scholarship available Carroll County Sheriff Jeff Doran announced Thursday that the Illinois Sheriff’s Association will be awarding a $500 Carroll County scholarship, a portion of more than $54,000 in scholarships given throughout the state to students wishing to pursue higher education during the 2016-2017 academic year.

The scholarships are to be applied to tuition, books, and fees only.

New round of water, sewer rate hikes coming City still hoping EPA financing changes help ratepayers

MORRISON – City residents will see another increase in their water and sewer bills, effective May 1 – and it won’t be the last hike they see.

The council approved the rate changes at its Jan. 25 meeting. The increases will be seen in the water and sewer service charges; the monthly use charges for both will remain the same.

The service charge portion of the bill is used for capital improvements.

The water service portion will increase from $16 to $18 monthly, while the sewer service charge will jump from $25.85 to $33 monthly.

The monthly water use is still at $6.55 per 1,000 gallons, and sewer use remains at $8.45 per 1,000 gallons.

City Administrator Barry Dykhuizen said the average water and sewer ratepayer in Morrison uses 4,000 gallons of water monthly. Based

on that usage, monthly sewer bills would jump to an estimated $58.33, and monthly water bills would be about $37.65.

The city has a multiyear plan for annual rate increases to pay for its new wastewater treatment plant and other sanitary sewer came in October 2014, but future annual increases will be effective May 1.

The 2014 rate hike represented about a 62 percent increase for water

and sewer combined.

Another 8 percent increase was passed by the council in April 2015.

Dykhuizen said the annual sewer rate increases are projected to be in place longer than the water hikes.

MILLEDGEVILLE – Midwestern BioAg hosted a farm management seminar Friday at its newly constructed Milledgeville fertilizer blending and distribution center.

Bob Yanda, Midwestern BioAg veteran consultant and vice president of growth and development, was one of the speakers who presented strategies to more than 200 area farmers for maximizing fertilizer budgets in tough economic times.

“Our guests today will get a two-and-a-half hour presentation on soils, soil balance, fertilizer, nutrient interaction, crops, crop health and more,” Yanda said. “But to distill what we do down to just one sentence, and this is where we start on every farm: We help them, as a crop producer of any crop, understand that there are better sources than dry and liquid fertilizer available than what the industry has been offering. That’s what differentiates us from the rest of the industry.

“We have some rules about biological farming. One of those is to use herbicides, pesticides and insecticides only when absolutely necessary, in the least amount it takes to get the job done.

“But what may happen on a lot of farms, is that farmers are going to spend less dollars on the wrong product. Better is better, before more or cheaper is better. Buy quality nutrients, buy balanced nutrition. It’s important anytime, but it gets extremely critical when you’re starting to pinch pennies. Our goal is to maintain an organization through which farm people and others can think, act, and work together to strengthen agriculture’s role and influence as a vital part of a strong and prosperous economy in a free America. We work to better the conditions of those engaged in agriculture, improve the grade of agricultural products, and develop a higher degree of efficiency in the production of agricultural products.

I believe in and support these goals and purposes and seek to promote them by joining this county Farm Bureau. I hereby apply for membership in County Farm Bureau and the Illinois Agricultural Association. This application is for the membership year beginning __________________, 20 ____, and ending __________________, 20 ____, and from year to year thereafter, so long as the membership dues are paid in advance. Such membership is subject to the bylaws of these organizations. The membership dues of $_____* for the first membership year are paid herewith. 4-H Horse swap meet seeks booth vendors MOUNT CARROLL – The Carroll County Boots ‘N Spurs 4-H Club is sponsoring a swap meet for English and Western new and used tack and show clothes.

The event will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 21 at Naaman Diehl Auditorium in Mount Carroll.

Tack shops, businesses, individuals or groups that would like to have a booth at the swap meet are invited. Each vendor will be provided one 8-foot

table and three chairs for a $10 fee. An electric outlet location is available by request.

Registration deadline is Feb. 12. All proceeds from the swap meet will be used to support the events and activities of the Carroll County 4-H Horse Program.

EDUCATION Dorothy Footitt scholarships available Dorothy Footitt scholarships will again be available to graduating seniors of Carroll County high schools.

Denise Bormann of the scholarship committee said applicants may be any graduating senior living in Carroll County attending a state accredited high school. Selection of

winners will be based on academic achievement, community activity, and personal recommendations.

The Eastland Elementary School 6th Grade Literacy Council recently had a Penny War, with proceeds donated to the Native American Christian Academy in Sun Valley, Arizona. “Former Eastland graduate, Michelle (Keckler) Mellette, and her husband teach at the school,” organizer Laurie Woessner said. “The goal was to raise enough money to buy four of the 10 room heaters on the academy’s wish list, but by bringing in $1,238, Eastland was able to donate all 10 heaters with money left to be used for classroom supplies.”

BY LYNNETTE FORTH For Prairie Advocate MOUNT CARROLL – Students at the West Carroll Middle School have the opportunity to watch and three of their classrooms.

Science teacher Patti Adleman wrote a grant request, and was awarded funds from the West Carroll Education Foundation to obtain three tanks, jellies, food and supplies to keep them going for 1 year.

Fellow teachers Pat Foltz and Bill Timm attended a science conference with Adleman, and were excited about the possibility of being able to share these

unique invertebrates with their science students.

The grant writing Patti process was Adleman extensive, but Adleman says it was worth it. ”The grant process is not extremely lengthy, but we have to be able to tie in how we intend to use them to impact all students,” Adleman said. “These delicate bell shaped creatures tend to have a calming effect, while being very interesting to learn about.”

Alderman said jellies are made up of 95 percent water, are soft bodied, have

no brain, blood or nervous system, and lack a skeleton.

The elegant creatures are named for their translucent, moon-like circular bells.

They swim by pulsating their bodies, with travel dependent on the tides and current of water. A typical moon jelly can grow umbrellas to be 12 inches, although in a small tank, it is not likely.

Jellies require a round shaped tank so that they do not get stuck in corners. They have very large stomachs that allow them to swallow food whole, then broken down.

Protein, carbs, and lipids are needed to survive. The food for the classrooms needs to be refrigerated,and a whole drawer in the room has been

Adleman explained that the jellies require delicate care, with a 50 percent water change monthly, as well as temperature and water testing.

“They are a ton of work, keeping the tank clean, and having to be fed twice a day, but the kids are in love with them, and I am too.”

Lo osing those Holiday Pounds

The holidays are over and the New Year has arrived. We often find additional pounds have come on, and sometimes they stick around a little longer than we want. This month’s article will review several simple steps you can take to shed some unwanted weight.

Most importantly, gear back on the carbohydrates. Holiday eating usually includes lot of carbohydrates in the form of sweets, cake, pie, etc. Other forms of carbohydrates include bread, pasta, and other ingredients found in processed food. When foods high in carbohydrates are eaten and not exercised away, they are stored as fat in your body. Try decreasing the intake of “carbs” as an initial step.

Equally important is “portion control.” Eating three larger meals each day is traditional in America, but as humans, we’re actually designed to eat smaller portions more frequently throughout each day. Large infrequent meals cause our body’s metabolism to rise and fall, leading to storage of those calories as fat. Smaller more frequent eating levels out the metabolism so that we burn those calories more steadily during daily activities.

Finally, get more activity. Engaging in physical activity for 30 minutes, five days per week, is the recommendation from American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) for general health and maintenance of healthy body weight. If you can’t walk or perform some other activity outside or in your home, try to find an exercise class or other facility where you can exercise safely.

Following these steps might help you lose those extra pounds and will definitely improve your health. And if you’re looking for a good weight loss goal, try shooting for 1 pound per week until you reach your desired weight. It might be easier than you think!

Relay for Life breakfasts at DQ MORRISON – For two consecutive Saturdays, the Bethesda Blaze Relay for Life team will be serving breakfast at Dairy Queen Grill and Chill in Morrison.

From 7 to 10 a.m. Feb. 27 and March 6, Morrison DQ is offering its facility for the fundraiser, with proceeds from the breakfasts going to the American Cancer Society’s Whiteside County Relay for Life event.

Feb. 4 AFC 76, Milledgeville 70: The AFC Raiders kept pace at the top of the NUIC East race, beating the Milledgeville Missiles 76-70 after a wild fourth quarter between the two rivals. Kaywan Palmer’s 21 points paced the Raiders (17-8, 9-1), who outscored Milledgeville 29-23 over break away from a 47-all tie after three quarters.

Jacob Hilliker added 12 points, and Stephen Brooke scored 11 for AFC, which went 31-for-47 from the free-throw line, including 16-for-22 in the fourth period.

Cade Schave led the Missiles (10-12, 4-6) with 20 points and nine rebounds, and fellow sophomore Kyle Ottens added 19 points, assists. Troy Litwiller chipped in 11 points for Milledgeville.

Eastland 57, Le-Win 49: The Cougars outscored the and third quarters to pick up an NUIC West win on the road.

Class 1A Wrestling regional at Polo

POLO – In a battle for the wrestling team title at the Class 1A Polo Regional, Dakota and Byron gave performances worthy of championship.

Ethan Cain of Polo gave a performance worthy of being a state champion.

Nearly overshadowed by the star pedigree of wrestlers from the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the state in his hometown gym, Cain still had everyone buzzing about his title at 195 pounds.

It wasn’t so much the title, but how he did it.

Cain needed only 12 seconds to get a pin. Not to dispatched of Chris Jenson of Dakota in an identical 12-second pin. Coming into the regional, he had a 10-second pin in Polo’s last meet.

“I want to be a state champion,” said Cain, who improved to 35-1. “I’ve been working for that since kindergarten.”

Cain looks forward to the sectional, where he’ll have chance to see Dallas Appleman (28-3) of Amboy, the only wrestler to beat him. It was also be the next stop on what Cain hopes will be his third trip downstate.

“The last two times, I lost just before the medal round,” Cain said. “I want to change that.”

Polo also got a title from freshman Noah Paul (30-4) at 106. Paul edged a member of the Alber wrestling dynasty (eight state titles by four different family members) at Dakota, freshman Caleb Alber, 7-6.

Paul’s win helped Byron in its quest to unseat 3-time state champion Dakota.

That’s when the meat of the Indians’ lineup took control. Defending state champs Greg Krulas (145) and Nate Olsen (160) easily won, and Jared Packer pinned Polo’s Jesse Ditzler at 152.

However, the meet wasn’t decided until 220 pounds, when Dakota’s Maverick McPeek pinned Oregon’s Anthony Marchetti. That gave the Indians 201 points to 194 for Byron.

A former anchor of that small-school wrestling community, Oregon, had Konner Wilson (138), Matt Stevens (182) and Tyler Burke (195), but returning state medalist Matt Crandall could only watch from the sidelines.

In the 285-pound bracket, in which Crandall would have been the top seed, Josh Anderson of West Carroll won in overtime over Isaac Lawson of Lena-Winslow 2-1.

West Carroll also had Andrew VanKampen at 113 and Kaleb Hartman at 145.

Eastland grad joins conference Hall of Fame ROMEOVILLE — The Great Lakes Valley Conference announced Feb. 2 that former Lewis University softball great Robin (Martz) Hammer has been inducted into the Great Lakes Valley Conference Hall of Fame.

A 2002 graduate of Eastland High School, she is the third Lewis inductee into the GLVC Hall of Fame, joining both Larry Tucker (men’s basketball, 2010) and Duane Chappell (men’s As a freshman, Martz played second base for the Eastland Cougars in their in the IHSA Class 1A state softball championship.

Hammer also was inducted in the Northwest Illinois Sports Hall of Fame in 2009.

“I am very honored to be chosen as a Hall of Fame inductee for the GLVC,” Hammer said. “Our team strived to be competitive, which provided more opportunities for me to succeed and get better each year. Without my teammates and coaches pushing me, this wouldn’t have been possible.”

The GLVC Hall of Fame Class of 2016 will be

honored May 24 at the Enterprise Rent-a-Car/ GLVC Spring Robin (Martz) Awards Hammer Banquet at the Drury Plaza Hotel in St. Louis.

Hammer dominates the Lewis record books as she is the all-time leader in career batting average (.408), hits (289), total bases (356) and single season batting average (.480, 2005) and hits (82, 2004 and ‘05).

She is a two-time National Fastpitch Coaches Association First Team All-American (2004, ‘05) and three-time NFCA All-Great Lakes First Team Selection (2004, ‘05, ‘06). She was a three-time All-GLVC First Team nominee and was tabbed the GLVC Player of the Year in 2005.

“In my long association with Lewis University and GLVC softball, I feel that Robin Martz was one of I have ever seen,” former Lewis University head softball coach George DiMatteo said. “Robin was a tenacious competitor on liked and respected by all of her teammates.”
