MOUNT CARROLL – The man accused of fatally shooting his wife in Lanark on Dec. 5 was expected to make his case for a lower bail amount in Carroll County Court on Jan. 27, but the reduction hearing did not go as planned.

Hake is facing 20 to 60 years in prison, up to life, murder, and felony possession of a weapon, punishable by 2 to 5 years in prison. He is in Carroll County Jail on $5 million bond.

Prosecutors say in court records he intended to kill Suzanne M. Hake, 46, while

he shot her in the head and chest in Lanark. Hake called police and turned himself in, and was arrested without incident in Freeport less than an hour after the shooting.

He has pleaded not guilty. homicide since the late 1800s, Lanark Mayor John Huggins has said. He also two were still married, but separated when the shooting occurred.

Savanna’s street project could cost close to $500,000

BY MICHAEL MILLER For Prairie Advocate SAVANNA – The long anticipated and planned Savanna street repair project will cost $480,617.98, MSA Engineering estimates.

The project will cover six major areas in the city.

Mayor Tony McCombie told the Water/Sewer/Refuse/ Streets and Alleys Committee during the Savanna City Council meeting Jan. 26 that she’d like to add Hill Street to the 2016 street project, extending from Spring Street to Cook Street.

This might entail borrowing money to complete, with committee Chairman Bill Robinson saying that he would rather not borrow due to the potential need to borrow money for the Wacker Road project if funding for that project materializes. He said he’d prefer allocating money from the civic fund, which has a balance of $796,000.

The added cost of the additional area would be about $38,790, Robinson said.

McCombie indicated the current budget has a total of $285,000 allocated for the street project, leaving about $195,617 to complete the full scope of the project.

“If we could get this approved tonight, we could very well go out for bid in the next week or two.”

Council approved shifting up to $200,000 from the civic project. He also felt it might be possible to pull funding from the motor fuel tax.

McCombie said when the

She said the hopes were the bids for the project would come in under estimate, but that if they came in higher, the next decision would be which piece of the project they would need to remove.

The project is planned for repairs on the 4th Street north ramp, from Quincy to 4th Street, north 5th Street, from the dead end to Diagonal Street, Spring Street, from Diagonal to Hill, Cook Street, from Hill Street east to the dead end, the 4th Street south ramp, from Madison to Murray, and Hill Street, from Spring to Cook Streets.

Other issues Robinson said that inspections indicated support bridge on the Bike Trail, and that the city was awaiting cost estimates from Willett Hofmann and Associates for repair. He added that there would need to be coordination with the railroad during this process.

Robinson told the council that after review, Police Chief Michael Moon told the committee his opinion was that a stop sign was not warranted at the intersection of Eaton and Skaien Drive, and the committee agreed.

He added that Comptroller/ Treasurer Sheryl Sipe felt it was too early to consider issuing water/sewer bills on

a monthly basis; the matter will be reviewed again in the future.

McCombie said she’d heard both negative and positive feedback regarding the placement of stop signs at the intersections of Washington and 4th, and Washington and 3rd Streets, with more negative on Third. Chief Moon said the development had taken some motorists by surprise.

t was about a year ago when Young Leaders began the leg work on our backpack program for children who may be food insecure. Since that time, we have sent home more than 2,000 meals. This includes the two breakfasts, two lunches, and two snacks the children receive over the weekend.

Funding for the program has come from the Young Leaders through a portion of the Harvest for All, 1st Farm Credit Services, and NutraBlend through Eastland Feed & Grain.

Recently, we have received a large donation of canned vegetables and fruit from Neumiller Farms. We are grateful for the cash donations from the Shannon Lions Club and the Hickory Grove United Methodist Church in Mount Carroll.

We have also been fortunate to have some volunteers who come in each week to help with packing the bags.

The Young Leaders will be hosting a Poker Run fundraiser for the program Feb. 20. The day will kick off at The Other Bar in Milledgeville with registration from 11:30 a.m. to lined up for the day. Cost is

$10 for an additional hand.

There will be food, a 50/50 best hand. So come join us for a fun day and support a great cause. It is heartstudent gets excited about getting a bag of food for the weekend.

Poopy’s Pub ’N Grub up for sale, but is still in business

SAVANNA – Poopy’s Pub ‘N Grub in Savanna may be on the market, but that doesn’t mean the popular restaurant is closing for good.

Peggy Promenschenkel, co-owner of the restaurant, said Poopy’s has been closed since Jan. 4 for kitchen maintenance, but said the restaurant will open again Feb. 11.

“Yes, we did list Poopy’s

in December, but we are absolutely not closing our doors,” Promenschenkel said. “Poopy’s will be business as usual, until if or when it sells.”

Promenschenkel, who co-owns the business with her husband, Kevin, opened Poopy’s in 1996. Inspired by his love for motorcycles, Kevin created the business with a biker theme.

“Unfortunately, listing it and closing for a few weeks back-to-back created lots of confusion,” Promenschenkel said. “We are both getting

older, and a less crazy life does sound nice. But, until something happens, we are here and it will be business as usual.”

A parliamentary procedure contest consists a 25-question multiple choice test, performing a 10-minute demonstration using parliamentary motions, and answering motions relating to the presentation.

For the West Carroll team, Shane Houzenga placed third in the FFA Creed, and Sage Storjohann placed sixth in Speaking. Maddie Meek participated in the FFA For Eastland, Liz Kloepping was second and Andrew Stengel eighth in Creed.

Have dinner with presidents at Savanna church Feb. 22 SAVANNA — How often does one have the chance to have dinner with a president? How about 10 presidents?

Ten U.S. presidents will be dining with guests at Savanna First United Methodist Church when it hosts its sixth annual Presidents Week chicken and biscuit dinner from 4 to 7 p.m. Feb. 22, in the church’s Fellowship Hall, 2100 Chicago Ave.

Mannequins of 10 U.S. presidents will be seated at dining tables, courtesy of Gene Wright, their usually on display at the Savanna Museum and Cultural Center on Main Street. Bring your camera with your favorite president.

The menu includes homemade chicken and gravy over biscuits, mashed potatoes, applesauce, carrots, cranberry sauce,

cherry pie a la mode, and a beverage. Deliveries within the Savanna city limits and carry-outs also are available.

Dinner ticket prices are $8 for ages 11 years and up, $4 for children 4 through 10, and free for children 3 and younger.
