A Friend, indeed: Jacobs honored for fair work Chadwick man earns state award for years with Carroll County Fair By TOM KOCAL Prairie Advocate TKocal@prairieadvocate.com SPRINGFIELD – Jerry Jacobs takes the extra time to listen, to teach, and to help just about anyone who crosses his path. For those reasons, and for his 26 years of service to the Carroll County Fair Association, Jacobs was presented with the Illinois Association of Agricultural Fairs’ coveted “Friend of Illinois County Fair” award at the annual IAAF convention Jan. 17. Each year the IAAF recognizes individuals who are outstanding county fair supporters, volunteers, or innovators in the industry who are respected by their colleagues and peers. Jacobs, of Chadwick, is vice president of the Carroll County Fair Association in Milledgeville, and has been a board member for 26 years. Liz Hutchinson is its president. “I say this with pride: This award could not have gone to a more deserving individual,” she said. Fellow board member Dave Hines suggested the CCFA nominate Jacobs for the award, she said. In the nomination letter, Hutchison said Jacobs is an exemplary board member and individual. for any project. He is the person with a smile on his face from morning to night. Two major commercial buildings on the fairgrounds were devastated by forces of nature in the past 3 years. ... Jerry was there to head the reconstruction by getting estimates, helping the contractors with the demolition and rebuilding projects, ... diligently working with other board members.” Jacobs has always put the needs of the county fair before his own,

All in a day’s work
By Marc Gravert As I sit here in my front room today to write, I think about the times of old, when sitting was rare. But as we get older, and our bodies start to on the old days while sipping a cappuccino in front of the wood stove. I am also amazed at how little we do nowadays compared to the days of old. Just living was hard work: water hauling, wood cutting, canning, chores, laundry and cooking, just to name a few. Then you start adding in all the extra things needed
to live from day to day, like scrubbing the floors, grinding flour, mending clothes, making butter and baking everything. Now if you sit and think about it for a while, you soon understand just maybe why people didn’t live long back then. Perhaps it was because they just plain wore out. And living long can be a relative term. Don’t get me wrong, they still seemed to live a long, good life. Then you start thinking about the outside farm-related chores: and so forth!
People had large families for a reason. It wasn’t that they couldn’t stay out of the bedroom. It was with growing children, you had extra hands to do more work. And with extra hands, most tasks were easier to accomplish. It was very common in the day to have eight to 10 children or more. I have heard of several families that had 14 children. Now and again, not all the children would make it to adulthood, as children died of many different ailments from the day, many never living past infants. So sad. And as you guessed, the girls would help Ma in the house, while the boys would help Pa outside! And I know many a girl helped outside with the farm, as did Ma, especially if the farm couple had only girls. My own aunts used to help with milking just to get the job done faster so work sooner. I don’t think I have ever heard of one of the boys staying in the house to help Ma do the cleaning or cooking. It may have happened, and
maybe more than I know, but maybe it just wasn’t talked about if it did. Kids today love to get some kind of compensation for doing their chores, an allowance of some kind, but back in the old days, the compensation you got for doing your chores was called living and gratitude. A you-live-here, youwork-here sort of allowance. Some kids didn’t have the best of living conditions, and many left home at a young age to venture into the real world looking for a better way of life. Many boys left abusive households in search of better; boys as young as 14 or 16, hoping to put their hard-working skills to better use for someone who might appreciate their dedication and hard work. My own father never went to high school. He said he went for a week and decided it wasn’t for him, so back to the farm he went to help Grandpa with the work. The world was such a different place than it is today. Just the idea of leaving home today at 14 or 16 would be a bad situation in most cases. I also think children in the
old days matured faster than they do now, just from all the work that needed to be done. It’s a known fact that kids today are not asked to contribute nearly as much to the family dynamics as they did in the old days. Kids have far too many things to occupy their time, from cellphones and iPads, video games, school sports, and the list goes on. Children in the old days knew how to do everything before they left the house. In fact, many could build the house if they had to. I also know many children left home early because maybe their families needed them to. They didn’t have enough money to feed and care for everyone, so they would venture into the world a job of some kind. Big farms always needed help, and young men were a dime a dozen in most towns. My father used to hire out some to neighbors for extra pocket money, as he didn’t get that at home. YESTERDAYS CONTINUED ON A22

CAPITOL REPORT By State Rep. Brian Stewart, 89th District
Two events recently started me thinking even more than I normally do about our region’s economy. On Wednesday, Highland Community College’s Leadership Institute met in the meeting space of one of my buildings. They discussed issues facing Freeport and the surrounding region, obstacles to economic progress, and catalysts needed for growth. Then, I spent Thursday morning with the Community Development Fund of Galena at the Desoto House. Jo Daviess County leaders presented issues facing the county and Galena economy and community, as well as progress that has been made recently. A cause for concern for many leaders in the 89th District is the shrinking labor force. I can think, in particular, of a business opportunity I had recently, but, to move forward, I had to be sure I had an adequate labor pool to draw from. After weeks of research on the part of my staff, we determined we wouldn’t be able to hire enough people with the right skill set, so we had to allow the opportunity to pass us by. Our shrinking labor force is not from a lack of strong families and talented young people. However,
many of our young local talent go to college and then seek employment in cities with higher-paying jobs and with better social activities. And while I love our region, I can’t blame them. Most college grads these days are saddled with seemingly insurmountable college debt and those urban salaries combined with the opportunity to grow their careers seem pretty alluring. We have to ask ourselves, what can we do to keep them here and to draw in new talent from across the state and country? Our promise
young people to imagine great ideas and then implement them. We need business people to continue to grow their businesses, hire new employees, and then reinvest in the community. We need retirees, with their wisdom acquired over a lifetime, to mentor the next generation. Economic change requires action. And action requires people. “No man is an island,” wrote John Donne, a poet in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. “Every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.” Each individual in our region has the opportunity to make a positive impact; and each choice will have a ripple effect. We can stimulate our region’s economy, but it will require every person making a choice to contribute. If you participated in an internship or an apprenticeship program, let me hear your story and the ben-

e had quite a turnout for the Nashville Country Christmas trip preview meeting. We are co-sponsoring the trip with Tri-State Travel and neighboring county Farm Bureaus in November. The trip is going to feel you may be interested in or contact us today. There still are few spots on the Ireland/Scotland trip to take place this July. The 12-day trip is going to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience you will not want to miss. Here is an interesting piece I received in my email. Free eagle tours begin Feb. 7 in Savanna SAVANNA – One of the most spectacular things in nature is seeing an eagle soar overhead, or water. All that and more can be seen during the Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation’s annual Eagle Tours. The free tours begin at 9 a.m. Saturdays, Feb. 7 to March 14, at the
Lost Mound Unit of the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge just north of Savanna. “During these 2-hour tours, participants will have the opportunity to see these beautiful creatures in their natural habitat,” said Lindsay Andrews, outreach coordinator for JDCF. “In late winter, large numbers of bald eagles converge along the
Mississippi River and can often be seen nesting, feeding, and interacting along the secluded backwaters.” The tour will stop at various points and allow participants to view the eagles and other wildlife through spotting scopes; all also are encouraged to bring cameras and binoculars. give better service. Because of Valentine’s Day, February is generally thought of as a romantic time. There are many ways to celebrate romance. Some couples thought President’s Day could be a romantic holiday if they dressed up as George Washington and Abe Lincoln, then delivered speeches to each other. They were wrong. Other couples use CCT to help spark romance. First, they make reservations for rides (as early as possible) to go grocery shopping together. They like not having to drive so they can safely gaze into each other’s eyes the whole trip. At the store, they stroll the aisles together, romantically gathering catsup, canned biscuit dough, and those little cocktail wieners. They pack their food, careful to observe When they get home, they’re ready for a romantic evening of their favorite movie and some delicious pigs in a blanket. Enjoy the winter and be thankful! Activities at the Senior Center Recycling Senior Service earns a great deal of money each year through the efforts of those who gather newspapers and aluminum cans in their respective communities, and those who bundle the paper and haul it to the local distribution centers. We need more help with this project. The “gathering” people work just a couple of hours a month in their respective communities. The “bundlers” work at the Senior Center just about any day when they have an hour or two to spare. And the “loaders/haulers” help load and/or haul the papers to the distribution center. Grandparents and Other Relatives Raising Children The GORRC support group will meet Tuesday, Feb. 24. Free lunch, funded by the Illinois Department on Aging, will be provided at 12:30 p.m., and reservations are required at 815-244-1800 or 866-214-1959. Seniors Around the County GRO – Great River Outreach The Great River Outreach offers a delicious meal, friendship, and good conversation at two locations. In Savanna, food is served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, at the former Chestnut Park School near Poopy’s, south of town on state Route 84. In Mount Carroll, food is served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Carroll United Methodist Church. Any age is welcome. Donations are accepted but not required. Penny and food is brought to Mount Carroll. Volunteers are involved in this endeavor. Why eat alone? Consider joining the group often! Are You Turning 65? The Answer: Intensity to burn more calories Can I burn a higher number of calories in only 30 minutes to lose weight? There is a simple concept for weight loss and that is “calories in, calories out.” What this means is if your body burns more calories than you eat or drink in a day, the result should be weight loss. It’s true that you can use a treadmill, elliptical, or bike at a slow steady pace for a longer period of time to burn a considerable amount of calories. But If you want to save time, all you have to do is shoot for a heart rate of 120 beats per minute or more by turning up the resistance of your machine, or increase the incline on the treadmill. Then you will expend
as many calories or more in 30 minutes as opposed to choosing a longer period of time with lowered resistance or incline. Mark Klein If you need to save time, start ramping up your workouts. Do not forget to only raise your intensity a little more each workout. Trust me, it’s for the best. Chadwick-Milledgeville supports facility sales tax passage in April MILLEDGEVILLE – For the third time, the ChadwickMilledgeville Board of Education approved a resolution in support of the passage of a 1 percent facility sales tax to be voted on at the April 7 consolidated election. CUSD 399 joined the West Carroll district in its support of the previously ill-fated issue at the Jan. 20 board meeting. The Eastland board has remained neutral. The measure has failed to pass countywide in the past two elections. Superintendent Tim Schurman said the Chadwick-Milledgeville board is committed to using the funds raised “to pay down our bond debt more quickly, which will result in a lower tax rate for all our districts residents. If we pay our debt down sooner we will be able to lower our tax rate by 48 cents, which is a tremendous savings for our local property owners.” In a review of budget revenues and expenditures, Schurman reported that as of Dec. 31, the district has received 70.6 percent of its projected revenues, and made 62.45 percent of its projected expenditures. Revenues received are up slightly over the previous year, with expenses appearing to But Schurman said the results amount of money spent on life safety work. Snow days will be made up during the proposed weeklong spring break. The proposed calendar has the last student attendance day as May 19. The board approved a resoluinitiative and passage of the educational reforms recommended in the document. Schurman reported that educational leadership organizations have collaborated to make recommendations regarding educational reforms in four areas: highly effecand adequate funding. It is hoped that the reforms recommended in this proposal will form a blue print for future legislative action. During the administrative report, Schurman said that the teaching staff received training in writing Common Core based curriculum, writing student learning objectives, and PARCC assessment implementation. Schurman reported that the Rev. James Meeks is the new chairman of the Illinois State Board of Education. Meeks was appointed by Gov. Bruce Rauner and is a strong proponent of charter schools and school vouchers. Principal Brian Maloy reported that Measures of Academic Progress assessment data has been analyzed and used to place students in remediation programs.
MAP is a computerized assessment exam that adapts to the student during the testing session. Maloy said registration for the 2015-16 school year has begun and is going well, and the spring semester is off to a good start. Schurman said 2 snow days, Jan. 7 and 8, will be added to the end of the year. The students’ last day of attendance is May 27, and the teachers’ last day is May 28. The Junior High Student Council has raised enough money to purchase a new digital sign at Chadwick School, thanks to support of local businesses and civic groups. Design plans for a new base for the Missile in front of Milledgeville School was also reviewed. In other action, the board: Approved a seven-period schedule for the high school beginning in the 2015-16 school year. Approved the annual May 15 and 16. Authorized Schurman to Approved the Art Club Championships in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin on Jan. 30. About 80 students will attend. Noted that Early Step preschool screenings for the district will take place March 5 and 6 at the First Lutheran Church in Chadwick. Hired Cheryl Neumann and Katie Wilkinson to be junior high Quiz Bowl sponsors, and upheld student suspensions. NorthAmerican Youth Sports has announced that it will have its annual spring youth basketball tournament in Rockford at Boylan Catholic High School on March 27-29. This tournament will feature 12 different brackets. girls, sixth grade boys and girls, seventh grade boys and girls, eighth grade boys and girls, ninth and tenth grade boys and girls, eleventh and
twelfth grade boys and girls. All grades are based on the grade in which a student is currently enrolled for the 2104-2015 school year. Eastland committee says no to open enrollment LANARK – A staff member at Eastland schools requested Jan. 21 that the Eastland Board of Education adopt an open enrollment policy for district employees residing outside of district boundaries. The request proposed policy revisions presented to the board for consideration. In a survey of 30 districts in the northwest region presented to the Policy committee, 12 have policies allowing employees who reside outside of district boundaries to enroll their children tuition-free; 18 do not allow open enrollment for employees. The committee is recommending that Eastland not allow open enrollment. Reasons given were a feeling that it would not be fair to taxpayers residing in the district who support the school system, and because state aid per student for Eastland would be much smaller than the actual costs for educating the students. There is also the desire to see more employees move into the district if possible. The Policy committee also recommended that the board codify a policy regarding extra-curricular events or practices on days when school is not in session due to inclement weather. The goal is to build on the success of the program started in 2014 for students in grades 7-12. The program will be scheduled for 4 weeks, and transportation will be provided. Total cost of the approved projects will be $40,985. The second quarter budget review by Hansen showed that expenditure projections for the year are on track. Revenues from state sources are well behind schedule compared to recent years. Given the lapse of the income tax increase in January, Hansen projected that the Education and Transportation fund could run payments are not received by July. He emphasized that these
would be additional reductions in state funds that are already prorated at 82 percent of the statutory amount. Overall, he explained that the district continues to operate within its means and that fund balances are healthy in all operating funds. Hansen shared plans for communicating with staff, parents and the public about Illinois Association of School Administrators’ Vision 20/20 for public education. Plans include articles published in newspapers and social media, presentations to local groups, radio spots, and staff meetings. The board approved the assignment of Brandon Bull as assistant spring play director for 2015; approved the reassignment of Rachel Todd from her current position as elementary art/keyboarding teacher to full-time art teacher for grades 7-12, of Mindy Hayden from her current position as fourth-grade self-contained teacher to kindergarten teacher, and Erin Paulsen from her current position as .5 media specialist/.5 social studies teacher to full-time media specialist, all three for the 2015-16 school year. The board also approved posting vacancies for an elementary art and keyboarding teacher, a .5 high school computers teacher/.5 high school social studies teacher, and a full-time 4th grade self-contained teacher for 2015-16; and for substitute bus drivers. The wage of the day was not much by today’s standards. A dollar a day was common and, if you were a hired man at some farms, it might also include room and board. Hired help was not just for the boys. Sometimes the girls would hire out as well. Many a farm had hired girls or house girls, and that’s just what they did. They helped the lady of the house complete all of her tasks. Most of them were live-in girls with a room over the kitchen and a back stairway to get there. Most of the accommodations for hired help were not fancy by any stretch of the imagination. They were very simple most times, with a warm dry room being wonderful. Sometimes the boys had it harder with their living arrangements, as a bed in the barn loft as their dry spot to sleep. And sleep was all it was for, a place for your weary body to rest after a long day of work. A nice warm shower was never heard of for the hired help. Most of the time you washed up well every day at the water pump or wash stand, but a Saturday evening bath in the summer kitchen was about as good as it got. And you may have had two sets of clothes and maybe your Sunday going-to-meeting clothes. Monday morning was wash day and you best have your clothes ready or
you might have to wear them for 2 weeks without being washed. Many of the boys and girls who ventured out into the world may have sent most of their money back home to help support the family they left behind. With no retirement or 401K, no medical or dental insurance, most didn’t make a ton of money. But if you had room and board, you had more than some did because you didn’t have any place to go to spend it. My mother was the oldest of her siblings and did get to work in a couple households as a young ent family as a nanny, as the lady of the household had health issues. She helped care for the three small boys the couple had, and was quick to make mention of it in later years as one of the boys became a U.S. senator in Illinois. She would always talk about how she used to change his diapers when he was a baby. So no matter how you look at it, life in the old days was hard work! And whether you were a child growing up and living it, or heard your grandparents talk about it, just think about what they did to help the family to live and carry on. Sometimes the father would die suddenly of an unexpected illness or accident, and that almost always meant the older boys would
a widow with a house full of kids, but widowers didn’t have near as much children. And sometimes you heard of a widow and widower, both with a bunch of kids joining two households into a small army of children. I love to sit and talk to people about how they grew up in the old days. It makes you enjoy what you have so much more. Blessings to you all!

By Gloria Yoder Many hands make work light has become a reality today at Mom’s house. With hosting services at their house on Sunday, there’s lots of cleaning and organizing to be done. In our community the church ladies and girls have a work day of scrubbing and cleaning at the home where church services are to be held next. Today was Mom’s turn. With 25 ladies it didn’t take long to have windows sparkling and ceilings and walls free of spiderwebs and dust. It’s always interesting to see what we’ll have for lunch on these cleaning days. We take turns preparing a hot dish while the rest of the ladies bring a salad or dessert of their choice. Today we had a smorgasbord of mouthwatering items to choose from. On Monday evening we, along with several church families, including my married brothers and their families, gathered at Mom and
have enough space, we each take our turn at the school house during summer vacation. Talking about church reminds me of a question a reader asked via mail and suggested that I respond in a letter. The question was as follows: Why do the Amish have church only every other Sunday? Good question, to be honest, I don’t know exactly where that practice originated. Yes, there are Amish churches who gather only every other week, but in our community, we have Sunday school on the in-between Sundays. Sunday school consists of singing, a brief devotional by one of the men, followed by a chapter study. The children are divided into several age groups for their classes. After their lessons are completed they return to the remaining congregation, where we sing several songs and have a closing prayer. If you ever happen to be in the area, you’re welcome to join us and see what it’s like for yourself. I’d be more than happy to meet you and have you here. have church. In manyAmish churches the noon meal consists of peanut butter sandwiches with ham and cheese along with home-canned red beets and pickles. Cookies, tea and coffee are also served. Generally, the cookies are baked by friends or neighbors, which gives the hostess a nice lift. The church peanut butter spread is one of my favorite items served. It’s both creamy and delicious. It also makes one of the most delicious dips for apples or bananas. In fact, I prefer using it above frosting for cookies or bars. I’ve always liked this type of peanut butter. Recently I found another similar recipe that makes it even more creamy, less sticky and easier to spread! I’m eager to share it with you, you’ll be sure to like it! While we meet in one another’s homes for services there are other Amish groups who have a church house. No two Amish groups are exactly the same. Interesting that there is a huge variety in the Amish way of life, many more than I could count. I have personally read very few
books about the Amish. In fact the details contained in the ones I have
from our way of life. We see value in and appreciate the simplicity of a more laid back lifestyle. While we dress plainly, and drive horse and buggy, we do not believe that is what will take us to heaven.
