The Illinois Department of Transportation has noted many problems with the 126-foot Ideal Road Bridge west of Milledgeville. For one thing, the opening for train traffic should be wider and higher, and the intersection of Ideal and state Route 40 is unsafe. The wooden structure, part of a major farm-to-market corridor along which livestock and grain are transported to terminals and processing plants along the Mississippi, also must be able to handle more traffic.

Everyone has a story; tell yours

By Marc Gravert As I sit down each week to write this column, I have an outlet to tell some of my own story. But I also think a lot about other people’s stories, and everyone has a story!

I don’t care how much you think you lead a boring life, sometime or someplace you have done something worth writing about. And although you might not have enough material for your own book, you for sure have enough for several chapters. I have been telling people for years to write things about their lives down on paper. I know most don’t do it, but I know a few who have.

We don’t need every torrid detail of certain aspects of your life, but the highlights would be great.

And if you don’t think your life is interesting, your children or grandchildren may think otherwise. It could be as simple as records kept of the major changes made while you owned a business. If you happen to be part of a multigenerational family that has owned that business, those changes could be very substantial.

Or maybe your family has farmed the same land for 100 years or more. Keeping track of changes in that time frame can be very interest-

ing: the type of livestock you raised, the brands of equipment you used, and the kinds of farm buildings that were used, remodeled or replaced.

My own family members never owned many of the farms that they ran, so the moving from farm to farm makes fantastic stories. I remember one story my father told of moving onto a newly rented farm years ago.

Moving time was March 1 for most farms. I was told the story of the old tenant moving out the back door of the farm house as the new farmers were moving in through the front door the same day. Or when he moved here to the farm he bought 53 years ago this March, that another neighbor stopped and wanted to borrow chicken crates to move their chickens on the very day Dad was moving.

That is one thing I have to do

yet is write down all the history in my own family. The way my parents met and started dating, or that my grandmother raisied geese to sell for extra income during the Great Depression. Or maybe one of the biggest mysteries in my family was how my great-grandfather was killed being run over by a train.

This story I will share with you, as my own father had no idea how his grandfather had died so many years ago. My father was 85 before he knew the whole story of greatgranddad’s death. He homesteaded to South Dakota in the late 1800s and, while the land was cheap, it was at the end of the land rush. It was also not prime farmland. And while great-granddad struggled for years to make a living on that desolate piece of land, try as he may, he couldn’t make enough of a living for him and his family.

So after many months of hard times, he and my young grandpa went to work in the railroad yards in a nearby town. I’m not sure how long they had worked there, but one day while they were working with his back to a train, it started backing up and he didn’t hear it coming.

Even though several other workers hollered at him, he was struck and killed by the train.

There are the parents of Shawn (Ellen) Christians of Brooklyn WI, Troy (LeAnne) Christians of Lanark and Heath Christians of Eldridge IA. They have 4 grandchildren, Tawnee and Jared of Brooklyn WI, Ethan and Lane of Lanark. They have lived in Lanark their entire lives.

Leo is engaged in grain farming and Bonnie has worked at Exchange State Bank and Carroll County Senior Center as the Director retiring in 2008; both are semiretired.

father dead. It was very hard on my teenage grandfather, and he was plagued for years with nightmares about the accident. He would never talk about it to anyone, and it ate a hole through him from all those years of not talking about what happened.

I had asked my father several times what had happened to his grandfather, but all he knew was that he was killed in a train accident when his father was a young man.

To live your whole life not knowing what your family story is has got to be very hard on a person.

In fact, I would think it must be very much like orphaned children who are adopted and have no idea what happened to their families.

So, while you still may think you have nothing to write about, please rethink that idea.

I have had so many people ask me how I can write so well about the old days, because I’m not that old.

They tell me they remember so well what I’m writing about, that I’m spot on in detail as to what happened.

Well, though I didn’t live in the old days of farming, my father loved to talk about the old days. He lived in a time as many of you read-

man walked on the moon.

Everyone has a story, maybe not as grand as the story of John Deere or J.I. Case or Mr. McCormick or even the Wright brothers. But to your family, you are more important, for without you and your family, they wouldn’t be.

This also brings to mind one of my most favorite movies of all time: “It’s a Wonderful Life.� You all know the premise: What if George Bailey had never lived? What a different life it would be.

Records request, meetings violation stir controversy Alderman wants to know how much demolition cost

MOUNT CARROLL – Alderman Robert Sisler has questioned city spending on one project, and successfully challenged the legality of a City Council discussion on another matter.

Sisler filed a Freedom of Information Act request, seeking information on costs to demolish a property on Mill Street last year.

Mayor Carl Bates reported on Sisler’s request during the council’s Jan. 13 meeting.

Alderman Mike Risko asked Sisler, “Why didn’t you just ask Julie [Cuckler, city clerk]?”

“Should I just ask you? I want to know how much it costs to acquire these abandoned properties and tear them down,” Sisler said. “We couldn’t afford $13,000 for the sewer lining project.”

Representatives from seven area Chambers of Commerce – Thomson, Mount Carroll, Savanna, Fulton, Morrison, Lanark, and Clinton, Iowa – furnished information about their respective municipalities, such as names of local builders, real estate agents, day care centers, restaurants, banks and more.

About 25 employees attended the event, including Tabitha Quick and Mark Fuller.

Quick, from New York, said she has been in the area since November, and will be settling in Morrison because she liked the school district.

Bates told Sisler that when the the decibel meter was discussed, it wasn’t on the agenda, but no decisions were made.

“You said it didn’t matter, it didn’t make a difference,” Sisler said.

“That is not what I said. Listen to the recording,” Bates said.

In other business, Risko advised the council that he would like to pursue a new warning system for the city, similar to the one that Thomson is getting. The system would provide messages via cellphone, and would cost less than a new tornado siren.

“What about people that don’t have a phone? Are you gonna alienate those people? I think we should get something to complement the existing siren,” Sisler said.

Risko assured Sisler the new system still would include the existing siren.

Bivins, who has served in the Senate since March 2008, said in his news release that the new administration has brought fresh eyes and a condition.

“No more smoke and mirrors,” Bivins said. “After months of indepth analysis, Gov. Bruce Rauner is expected to release his budget Feb. 18. Preliminary reports indicate coming months are going to be tough.

“A key approach to turning our state around is promoting an economic climate that encourages job creation and growth in Illinois.”

Bivins pointed to the freeze on

all state discretionary spending. In addition to halting what the governor called “nonessential” state spending, he also turned his attention to state-awarded contracts and grants.

“The order suspends agencies’ ability to award, enter, amend or renew any state contracts or grants a few minor exceptions. The contract and grant suspension is issued until July 1,” Bivins wrote in his Senate Week in Review column.

Rauner also called for a review of past state agency spending to identify what can be eliminated or to review all contracts and hiring decisions since Nov. 1.

“To further cut spending, Gov. Rauner also called for Central Management Services to take stock of the surplus property for auction, determine potential consolidation of state-owned or leased properties, and the governor called for agencies to be conscious in their energy consumption as a way to conserve state resources,” Bivins said.

Veteran’s Assistance Commission might sue county Board members plan to attend next VAC meeting to try to resolve matter

By TONY CARTON For Prairie Advocate MOUNT CARROLL — The county might be sued by the Carroll County Veterans Assistance Commission in a challenge to the recently adopted budget, Carroll County Board member Paul Hartman said during Thursday’s meeting.

Board Chairman Kevin Reibel and several board members said they will attend the next VAC board meeting with the hope of resolving the issue.

For several years, the VAC has lobbied the board for more funding, claiming the amount allocated per veteran and the employee salaries are inadequate.

“When you compare the number of veterans in each county (provided by U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs) to the dollars allocated by the county for their operations, Carroll County is third-

highest ahead of Ogle, Whiteside and Jo Daviess counties in spending per veteran,” Reibel said in a letter to the editor published in last week’s Prairie Advocate.

When the board approved this year’s budget in November, it allocated $32,500 for the VAC. The county budgeted $29,720 last year, but the agency spent only about $23,000.

MOUNT CARROLL – During committee meetings before the Jan. 13 City Council meeting, the future of Mount Carroll Development Corp. and the Management and Planning Programs Involving Nonmetropolitan Groups (MAPPING) were discussed.

Mayor Carl Bates said he had been contacted by Dave Johnston of MCDC about the status of the organization, and MAPPING the Future of Your Community. The strategic visioning and planning program was approved in December.

Bates said they decided to “hold off” until the MCDC’s next meeting to assess the need for any action.

“I do see rejuvenation in the group to continue making Market Street Commons a continued success.”

“I need more time to gather numbers,” Sweich said. “The way things happened with Lou’s passing was traumatic. The MAPPING program is extremely important.”

“It will be a nice transition to MAPPING, kind of a hand-over of the baton,” Bates said.

A committee meeting is planned, but the actual training portion will not begin until the end of March.

For the cemetery committee, Risko noted that work has been limited by the weather, and gravestone repairs are set to be done in June at a cost of $3,000. But a familiar face, Social Services Director Luann Brewington, will take her place.

Conducting the key turnover ceremony was Dan Fosness, vice president of operations for the Illinois and Iowa Good Samaritan Society.

“This is a sad day, in a way, because we’re saying goodbye to Cathy, yet exciting in welcoming someone who I would normally say is someone new, but that’s not true in this case, because it is Luann, somebody who you are all wellacquainted with,” Fosness said.

“I am so pleased with this opportunity to stay here,” Brewington said. “I know that behind every great leader is a team of individuals that support them. I know I have that here, and I am looking forward to what the next year brings.”

Pearl City Technowolves get Learning opportunities abound in Lego League

ROCKFORD – The Pearl City Technowolves Lego League team recently headed to Eisenhower Middle School in Rockford for the First Lego League Challenge.

The challenge included skit judging, core values, robot design, and four attempts to earn as many points as possible completing robot missions on the table design.

“For their skit, the team created a pretend new educational video game titled ‘Space Race Mechanics’ to help students practice certain math skills,” Pearl City Elementary Principal Chris Wallace said.

Wallace said the core values competition involved group problem and puzzle solving, while robot design was judged by what sensors, attachments, and programming stood out on the team’s robot.

“FLL encourages students to share with other teams during the competition day and observe all the various robot designs created,” Wallace said. “Overall, the day offered learning opportunities and practice performing in front of others, a valuable skill.”

The Pearl City Technowolves Lego League Team members, all new to the program this year, are Char Harvell, Jenée Stultz, Conor DeZell, Oliver Petta, Riley Schauer, Ben Bremmer, Cody Pitts, and Noah Roach.

“The team hopes to take all the ideas learned as they will begin to prepare for next year’s challenge,” Wallace said.

Preschool screenings in Carroll County for kids ages 3-4 SCREENINGS

The Morrison School District is sponsoring a developmental screening for 4- and 5-year-old children who will be eligible (age 5 before Sept. 1) to attend kindergarten during the 2015-16 school year.

Community kindergarten screenings will be from 1 to 3 p.m.

Obituaries Johnnie Marlene (Dorty) Hartje

WILDWOOD, Fla. – Johnnie Marlene (Dorty) Hartje, 79, of Moline, formerly of Dixon, died Friday, Jan. 9, 2015, at her seasonal home in Wildwood.

She was born March 24, 1935, in Andalusia, Alabama, to Frank and Johnnie Johnnie (WilMarlene (Dorty) ford) Dorty. She Hartje married Ronald K. Hartje on April 10, 1953. Marlene taught in the Dixon Public Schools system at Washington School for more than 20 years, retiring in 1990. After retiring from teaching, she worked as activities director for KSB Hospital, and as an outreach worker for Lee County.

Survivors include her husband, Ronald, of Moline, her daughter Rhonda, of Wildwood, her sons Bradley, of Davenport, Iowa, and Jeffrey of Wildwood, and two grandsons, Nicholas and Nathan Hartje, of Davenport, Iowa. She was known as “Aunt Bo” and “Bo” to all her beloved relatives and special friends.

Visitation was held Saturday

at Milledgeville United Methodist Church. The funeral followed at the church with the Rev. Rosa Lee, Bethel Cemetery in Milledgeville.

Dwayne F. Hook

Dwayne F. Hook was a believer in hard work, dedication, and honesty. He was a devoted father, farmer and friend. He died on Jan. 10, 2015, at the age of 63, in his home surrounded by his loving family.

Cremation rites have been Dwayne F. Hook accorded. A celebration of life gathering will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, at Tipton Auction House memorial fund has been established.

Memorials will be given to Thomson Fire and Rescue.

Dwayne was born on Feb. 1, 1951, the son of Fred and Bernice (Hass) Hook in Clinton, Iowa. He attended York Community High

School, Thomson, and graduated with the class of 1969. Dwayne married Cindy Sikkema on Sept.

10, 1977, in Morrison.

Dwayne farmed and lived his entire life on the family farm.

Farming was more than a job, it was Dwayne’s way of life. Dwayne made his rounds, driving around the farms to check on things every day.

He enjoyed tractor pulls and was a member of the Badger State Tractor Pullers. Tractor pulling started almost 40 years ago for Dwayne in the antique class. His tractor of choice then was a John Deere “G.” He then moved up to a faster paced class, entering the pro stocks in 1988. He purchased an International 966, which he later named T-bone, inspired by the large numbers of beef cattle on the farm.

Dwayne loved to compete and cherished the friendships he made over the years. Most of all, he enjoyed working with his son in this hobby.

He was dedicated to the sport and very rarely missed a pull. Dwayne enjoyed going to town to meet the guys for coffee at Dusty’s and The Station. Dwayne loved spending time with his family and friends.

Dwayne will be dearly missed by one son, Dustin (Amy Durward) Hook of Fulton; three brothers, Edward “Ed” Hook of Thomson, Richard “Dick” (Sandy) Hook of

West Des Moines, Iowa, and Larry (Sharon) Hook of Thomson; and one sister, Cheryl (Michael “Micky”) Paston of Sterling, Colorado.

Dwayne was preceded in death by his parents and a sister-in-law, Sharon Hook.

Class members received milk shakes as a reward on the last day before Christmas break. “In the spirit of generosity, the money collected by the students was donated to the Eastland Council of Churches Winter Wear Program that offers coats, boots, and snow pants to children in need in the Eastland area,” Landherr said.

The foundation recently announced its scholarship opportunities. As I mentioned last week, there are a number of careers that are related to agriculture. There are so many steps along the way that people don’t even think about, for the farmer cannot do his job without his seed salesman, geneticist, agronomist, marketer, banker, accountant, and on and on. And for our livestock guys, they need to have the vet, the nutritionist, and more.

After harvest, and the grain has been marketed and sold, it has to go somewhere to be made into something edible! Someone has to be in food processing, a chef, a food broker, a food scientist, and still the list goes on. There are also those needed who go into environmental sciences. So while you are questioning your major and if it meets the requirements, just ask us!

There are about 278 million laying hens that produce 6.1 billion dozen eggs a year in the United States.

Illinois is ranked 25th for egg production nationwide. The largest single chicken egg ever laid weighed 1 pound; it had a double yolk and double shell.

the quality or nutritional value of an egg, but rather the breed of the hen that laid it. Hens with white feathers tend to lay white eggs and hens with red feathers tend to lay brown eggs.

The color of an egg yolk is determined by a hen’s diet. Like shell color, it has nothing to do with an egg’s nutritional value. If you crack open your egg to discover a dark yellow yolk, the hen was probably fed green vegetables. A mediumyellow yolk would indicate a diet of corn and alfalfa, while a light-yellow yolk could be the result of eating wheat and barley.

out, personally. I am very picky about my eggs. Up until 2 years ago, I had never had farm-fresh eggs. Now that is all I prefer. I never believed there could be a huge difference, but there is. I also rarely order eggs in a restaurant.

At home I prefer over hard. A go-to breakfast for me at home is scrambled eggs with a little cottage cheese in them. It makes them very cheese, but we can talk about my dairy habits another week.

“This is something we are doing along with changing insurance carriers,” Dykhuizen said. “The city attorney is aware of it, and has not posed any questions or concerns about it.”

Public Works Director Gary Tresenritter discussed snow removal in the downtown area, complimenting the city crew on its good work recently.

All aldermen also offered their approval.

“The biggest problem with the downtown is that it is one lane, and one way,” Tresenritter said.

“The big equipment can’t load snow when cars are around, so removal must take place at night or early in the morning. Timing is everything. They can’t always get all of the snow removed before cars get there in the morning, meaning that snow removal may have to wait until the next day to be completed.

“The sidewalk contractor begins at 4 a.m., with contractors

being called for 2 inches of snow.

Mother Nature doesn’t always cooperate with us. We rely on the Police Department to notify us when we need to begin plowing snow.”

Tresenritter also said his crew usually begins by salting hills first, having 30 miles of streets to work on. City workers will begin logging their mileage.

Two of ‘17 Best Burgers’ are right in our area Joint in Galena were recognized for CHICAGO — Two Northwest Illinois, homemade burgers match up with 15 other tasty Illinois delights, according to thrillist.com, a Chicago-based website that says, “We’re obsessed with everything that’s worth caring about in food, drink, and travel.”

The editorial staff at Thrillist travelled the state from top to bottom, eating quite well on the way, before announcing their 17 favorite burgers last month.

The names are award-winning, too: The Bucky Dome, Neurosis, Charlie’s Famous Horseshoes, The Big Lebowski, and the Moonburger, just to name a few.

Good eats in Northwest Illinois: Poopy’s Big Poop burger is served with fries, coleslaw, and anything else you want on it. The burger was named one of the best in Illinois last month by Thrillist. com. Also named was the Shut the Front Door burger at Durty Gurt’s Burger Joint in Galena.

Frogmore Stew for you

By GLORIA YODER Dear friends both far and wide, I was recently impressed with a quote by motivational writer Brian Tracy, so I’ll share it with you: “Move out of your comfort zone. You can only grow if you are willing to feel awkward and uncomfortable when you try something new.”

Don’t we all face those times when there is something we know we should do, yet would much rather stay in our comfortable little nook? It’s so easy to just shrug it off. How about joining me in making a point of giving a word or note of encouragement to a sad and lonely heart? Or perhaps even inviting someone over for dinner who doesn’t have a family or friends to spend time with?

This week I’d like to introduce you to a dish that would be ideal to serve to your guests. This unique dish is called Frogmore Stew. Let me hasten to assure you that it doesn’t have anything to do with frogs whatsoever, although as a girl my brothers occasionally came in the house with frog legs for us to fry! For some reason Mom was never really excited about it, but to us children it certainly was a novelty.

Back to the Frogmore Stew: I’ll with it. A number of years ago before

I was married, my co-workers at the Amish store and I were invited to our boss’s house for supper. I was told we’d be served “Frogmore Stew,” which sounded quite distasteful, yet I was certain that it would be delicious if served at their house. Even though it didn’t sound appealing, I was eager to give it a try and see what it would be like.

Upon arriving we were welcomed into the dining room where they had extended their table providing enough space for everyone to sit down. A large plastic table cloth was spread over it. As we were seated, I noticed that there were no plates in sight, only napkins and forks.

After a prayer of thanks we watched with wide-eyed fascination as they dumped drained vegetables, chicken breasts and shrimp right onto the table! Several piles were made in order for everyone to be able to reach them. Dips and sauces were passed as each of us made little dab on the table in front of us It looked hilarious. Here we were, all seated around a long table with food heaped on piles through the center. Using our forks we stabbed an item from the pile and dabbed it into our dips. I’m a dip lover, so naturally I had lots of fun.

One of my favorites was mixing barbecue sauce with sour cream and using it for my veggies or meat chunks.

With Frogmore, you can pick out whatever strikes your fancy.

This is especially nice for picky eaters. While some may dodge the carrots or onions, their “neighbors” will be delighted to have several extra.

Yes, I found Frogmore Stew to be quite different, yet tasty. I was intrigued with the idea of having something out of the ordinary, so we decided to make it for my out-ofstate boyfriend (and future husband) when we came for a visit. Only that time we poured the veggies, etc. onto cookie sheets instead of dumping it directly onto the table. Plates can be used instead!

Editor’s Note: This dish – sometimes known as Low Country Boil – is a delicious example of South Carolina’s sea island cooking. According to food historians, Frogmore Stew is named for a tiny town on the coastal island of St. Helena. The one-pot dish probably was created in the 1950s calls for shrimp, corn on the cob, smoked sausage and new potatoes steamed in a savory broth. The dish has become a favorite for parties and celebrations in the South. As someone who studies Amish culinary culture, this dish is a perfect example of how nontraditional foods (i.e. burritos, tacos, Frogmore Stew)

Frogmore Stew

Broth: 1 cup ketchup 1 cup vegetable oil 1 cup vinegar 1 package 3 ounces of crab boil 3/4 cup salt 2 teaspoons black pepper 16 cups water Mix together 6 pounds of chicken (tenders or breasts) 5 pounds link sausage 2 pounds shrimp 12 unpeeled potato wedges 1-1/2 pounds baby carrots chunked into 2 – 3 inch pieces 18 ears corn 1-2 green peppers chunked 2 – 12 ounces mushrooms 3 large onions, cut into wedges

5:50 add chicken 6:10 add mushrooms and onions and corn 6:20 add shrimp and green peppers 6:25 turn off burner and let set 5 minutes. Drain off liquid and serve at once.

Tip: Have everything cut up and ready before you start.
