Winter chores weren’t easy heat my horse water tanks in the winter. I always got a kick out of how the horses seemed to like to warm their noses over the smoke stack on cold winter mornings.

Some of the waterers took kerosene heaters also. These were mostly hog waterers as they were smaller and less room for heaters under them.

By Marc Gravert As we settle into a new year, think about the new years of old.

Nothing was easy. Not much was fun. But you did what was needed to survive.

Livestock played a major part on most Midwestern farms, so everyone had plenty to do to care for them. The old barns were a necessity in the old days, as they held the summer’s worth of hay to be fed all winter long.

Way back, the hay was put up loose, but as time moved forward, bales also came into the picture. Most barns could hold enough hay, and then some, to make it through the long, cold, hard winters.

Most barns had hay chutes that were used to supply the hay from area. And all barns were different, depending on the type of livestock you had.

Beef feed lots most often had double-sided barns with the loft in the center. That was so the cattle could be fed inside and fed from the middle. Most dairy barns had the hay mow above the cows, and the hay was dropped down and fed in their mangers in front of the stanchions with a manure gutter running behind the cows. Some barns housed several different kinds of animals in the same barn; mostly cattle and horses, but some

had sheep or goats and maybe even hogs.

But whatever you had, it was work caring for them. Even watering animals was no easy task. Think about keeping water tanks free of ice with no electricity. Not the easiest, I should say. Most farms had the large cement stock tank that held several hundred gallons of water.

It had a roof with part of the roof opening as doors for livestock to access the water.

How on earth would you keep them from freezing? Well, the amount of water helps some, but when the temperatures dipped low, you needed a heat source.

And the best in the old days was the “Cowboy� tank heater.

This was basically a small cast iron heat stove you put in the water tank. They were about a foot wide, three feet long and two feet deep.

It had a door that you fed wood or corn cobs in to burn, and that door was also the draft regulator. It also had a smoke stack that would stick up from the water tank so it would draw air well.

My father would also use large chunk coal at night to burn, as it would burn a long time and he would not have to go out at night to feed it. In the mornings you would throw on more wood or corn cobs to get it back burning again.

They worked very well, and I used them when I was younger to

blow out if it was very windy. And they were very similar to the old oil lamps of the day, as they had a wide wick and could be turned up or down as needed.

The other thing livestock needed was straw for bedding, and most farms had plenty, as they usually grew oats to feed the horses and young livestock. Most straw was stored in the mow along with the hay. But when the barn was too small to store everything, the straw was stacked nearby on a pile made while the grain was threshed in the summer months.

Some livestock was left to winter around the straw stack and would make burrows into the stack as they would eat at the straw pile during the winter months. But you had to watch so they didn’t get buried if the straw pile collapsed on them.

Farmers also used corn fodder for bedding as they hauled in the corn shocks during the winter to retrieve the ear corn and throw the fodder to the animals for bedding.

You always had plenty of manure to get rid of in the winters also. With horses, it always seemed like more came out than

what went in. At least it seemed like it when everything was hauled out to the manure pile with the wheel barrow.

The best part of horse manure with straw was that it created heat, and never froze in the winter. My father said when he was young they used to bank the house with horse manure to help insulate the house to help keep it warmer.

Hog houses were harder to keep warm as pigs didn’t put off much heat. Many hog houses had hog wire fencing tacked to the bottoms of the roof stringers and six to eight inches of straw shook up on top of it to help keep the warmth down closer to the pigs. But this was also and dust up above.

In the old days, most of the milk houses on the dairy farms were not attached to the barn. They were near the well or spring so the water could be used to cool the milk. This meant that you always had to haul the milk to the milk house.

Depending on how many cows you had, that could be a lot of milk twice a day, seven days a week.

Some people used milk can carts in the summer and fall, but once winter hit, a sled might work better

for the job.

Then there were the chickens.

They needed special care as the winters were hard on them. With lack of sunlight, they would lay fewer eggs. So sometimes, coal oil lamps were added for a few hours more of light for them.

How many of you remember the seed sprouters for the laying hens? It was kind of like an incubator that held six or seven trays and a kerosene heater in the bottom. You would add moist seed to each tray and, as it sprouted and grew a few inches of greens on them, you fed it to the chickens.

Every day you would take a tray in the hen house so they had fresh greens to eat during the winter months. On nasty cold days, the eggs had to be picked up every few hours as they would freeze and crack if you didn’t. wood that had to be hauled to the house to help keep it warm all winter.

My father burned a lot of corncobs also in the house. I remember him dumping a load every year through the basement window so we could burn them all winter, along with all the wood.

So as you settle into your nice warm Lazyboy this weekend, think about life on the farm all those years ago when life was simple and work was hard. Not many people carried extra weight back in the old days because they worked so hard at everything they did in life. Just living was hard, but they did what needed doing just to survive.

Ice Age ecosystem protected in Jo Daviess County HANOVER — The 25th conservation easement of the Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation protects a 25-acre property owned

by Barbara Woodford of Hanover.

Completed on Nov. 20, the easement will forever preserve some of the rarest wildlife habitat in the world.

Woodford and her late husband, Charles, bought the property in 1974, spending weekends there with their children. After retirement, Chuck and Barbara moved to the property full-time.

In recent years, Barbara has given serious thought to what will happen to the property in the years to come. “I wanted to be sure that the natural features of this place wouldn’t be destroyed after I sold it.”

For 40 years, the Woodfords have been stewarding and protecting the property’s incredible features, including one of the rarest and most unique natural communities on the planet. These globally rare habitats are only found in the Driftless Area of Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota,

and Iowa. Out of the 300 to 400 only 12 are in Illinois, and all are in Jo Daviess County. the climatic conditions of the last Ice Age, which ended about 12,000 years ago. The cold-producing loving plant and animal species to survive where they can’t survive anywhere else.

The Woodford Conservation Easement protects rare plant and animal species that haven’t been common in Illinois since the glaciers melted at the end of the last Ice Age, including the Arctic rose, Canada violet, and the federally endangered Iowa Pleistocene snail, which only “We need a wide geographic range of protected Iowa Pleistocene snail colonies in order to downgrade this species’ status from ‘endangered’ to ‘threatened,’” says Lisa Maas, a biologist with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service working on the recovery of the Iowa Pleistocene

Staff from the Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation approached Barbara about permanently protecting her property in spring 2012.

After many conversations at her dining room table about the future of the property, JDCF and Barbara agreed that a conservation easement would be the best tool for ensuring that the property’s incredibly rare features never will be destroyed.

This project was made possible through grants from the Grand Victoria Foundation and the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation. Letters and Commentary Congressional year in review

As we head into the New Year, and a new session of Congress, I wanted to share with you some highlights of the work I’ve done for you and your family in 2014.

I have continued my efforts to create good-paying American jobs that can’t be outsourced.

In February, we celebrated national Digital Manufacturing Lab in Illinois, which I fought to make happen. “Partnering for Illinois’ Economic Future,� my on-going initiative to help increase collaboration to create jobs and bolster the region’s economy, featured a districtwide economic summit focused on manufacturing.

I worked hard to ensure the jobcreating Thomson prison remains on track to open, including leading the charge to defeat a misguided attempt by a congresswoman from Tennessee to deny critical funding for the project.

I was honored to bring U.S. Army Secretary John McHugh to the

Rock Island Arsenal in October, and in June, I helped announced that the U.S. Army allocated $110 million in funding for the Arsenal to ensure that it remains competitive.

As a member of the House Agriculture Committee, we passed Bill in years, and I welcomed U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack to a farm in Milan to discuss its implementation.

I used my position on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee to invite U.S. Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx to our region to discuss transportation priorities. I was also proud that provisions of my bipartisan bill to upgrade our nation’s aging locks and dams were signed into law by President Barack Obama in June.

I remain committed to defendMedicare at every turn.

This fall, I toured our region to discuss the importance of preserving and protecting Social Security and Medicare and my opposition to the Ryan Budget, which would end the Medicare guarantee and force

seniors to pay more out of pocket for their health care. I also led a group of 117 members of the U.S. House of Representatives in successfully urging President Obama to rule out cuts to Social Security and veterans’ I also continued to advocate for our nation’s veterans. Deeply troubled by reported misconduct at our VA health centers, I pushed hard for accountability and improvements to the care that our veterans receive. I spoke in-depth with the three VA hospital administrators that serve our area and made inperson visits to all six of our VA Community Based Outpatient Clinabout their care.

As a late success, this December my bill to name the Galesburg VA Clinic after the late Congressman Lane Evans was signed into law by the president.

Congress takes family farmers and ranchers for a ride

What does Congress have against family farmers and ranchers? The $1.1 trillion spending bill passed last month included the full version of the so-called GIPSA rider passed earlier by the House of Representatives. A rider is a legislative provision attached to a larger spending bill.

There are not enough ways to describe how bad this hidden policy package truly is. It limits USDA’s ability to protect farmers’ and ranchers’ basic rights, such as their freedom of speech and freedom of association. The Packers and Stockyards Act, passed in 1921, was written to protect farmers and ranchers from discriminatory, deceptive and abusive practices when they sell livestock and poultry to meatpacking corporations.

Congress abandoned those

principles when they passed the FY 2015 federal spending bill. They abandoned USDA’s effort to provide smaller volume livestock producers a more competitive livestock market and greater fairness for farmers and ranchers.

The 2008 Farm Bill required Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack to write regulation, under the Packers and Stockyards Act, to prohibit undue and discriminatory preferences given to large, industrial livestock operations and to provide basic protections to farmers and ranchers who do business with meatpacking corporations.

Secretary Vilsack proposed the best and most comprehensive livestock market reforms since the passage of the Packers and Stockyards Act. Unfortunately, Congress has repeatedly undercut his efforts.

Family farmers and ranchers, need and deserve access to competitive livestock markets that reward them fairly for their work. That’s out, soon.

Ethanol policy reform: Where environmentalists, energy advocates agree

By Marita Noon We all expect to pay a price for missing deadlines — fail to pay a parking ticket on time, and you arrest. People have lost their jobs when they can’t get the work done on schedule. Students, who turn in papers late, get lower grades, maybe even fail the class.

But the Environmental Protection Agency apparently can miss deadlines (many) with impunity.

For the past 2 years, the EPA has failed to meet the statutory deadline under the Renewable Fuel Standard how much ethanol to blend into the nation’s motor fuels.

In November 2013, the EPA did make an attempt to announce the proposed 2014 blend levels — which by then already were months past the legally mandated deadline.

eration. The EPA set the proposed 2014 standard to a level lower than 2013â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, even though the law requires increasing amounts. than 58 percent of U.S. oil consumption. No doubt Congress believed it was saving American consumers from their addiction to oil.

Then the world changed. The U.S. economy plunged into its worst recession ever, unemployment soared, and gasoline demand fell sharply.

Meanwhile, advanced drilling technologies, including the long-used hydraulic fracturing and newer horizontal drilling, began producing oil and natural gas from U.S. shale formations â&#x20AC;&#x201D; which were previously uneconomic to develop â&#x20AC;&#x201D; leading to

Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 21st century energy boom.

Today the U.S. is the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest natural-gas producer and is projected to pass Saudi Arabia as the number-one oil producer. the market, prices have been cut in half. Although fears over foreignoil dependence have abated, the U.S. remains stuck with an ethanol mandate that is outdated, unworkable, and even harmful to vehicles, engines, and the environment.

Consider just some of the their blending of corn ethanol and use more cellulosic biofuels. Never mind that very little cellulosic biofuel has ever been produced — even according to EPA’s own data. But that fact hasn’t prevented the EPA from levying millions of dollars in the phantom fuel, without any assurance that enough cellulosic biofuel will ever be available. It’s kind of like receiving a bill for something you cannot buy because it doesn’t exist, but you’re being charged anyway.

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office reports cellulosic biofuels are: “complex, capital-intensive, and costly.” them, capacity will “fall far short of what would be necessary to achieve the very rapid growth in the use of cellulosic biofuels required” under the RFS. Then there is the “blend wall” problem. With less gasoline being sold than Congress anticipated, amounts of ethanol to gasoline without exceeding E10 — the fuel consisting of 10 percent ethanol and 90 percent gasoline sold virtually everywhere in the country today. To get around the blend wall issue, the EPA granted a “partial waiver” allowing the sale of E15, a fuel blend containing up to 15 percent ethanol for model-year 2001 and newer vehicles. bad situation much worse, and all at the taxpayers’ and consumers’ expense. Ethanol levels higher than 10 percent can damage or destroy vehicle engines, according to a study conducted by the wellrespected Coordinating Research Council. Automakers are voiding warranties and refusing to be held responsible for mechanical problems caused by fuels containing more than 10 percent ethanol.

And the marine industry warns of potential engine failures on various types of watercraft powered by the industry’s most common engines.

The Outdoor Power Equipment Institute is so concerned about safety hazards that it has launched a campaign telling consumers to “Look Before You Pump.” OPEI says equipment ranging from lawn mowers to “jaws of life” devices could be damaged by ethanol’s corrosive properties if used in concentrations above 10 percent. Do want your expensive new lawn mower to quit the third time you use it? You certainly want life-saving devices to work on demand.

And that’s not all. Ethanol contains less energy than gasoline, often, thereby causing more consumer expenditures. Ethanol production has driven up food prices here and abroad.Additionally, some studies indicate ethanol usage increases greenhouse gas emissions.

But then, despite the fact that the EPA says decisions are made on merits, politics entered announcement of the 2014 blend levels was delayed to help Rep. Bruce Braley, D-Iowa, in his Senate bid. Braley was pushing for an increase in the proposed levels and was hoping that he would be to raise the targets.

Additionally, a Republicancontrolled Senate would be more likely to pass legislation to reform or repeal the RFS. Braley was quoted in Politico saying: “Voters

in Iowa look at where I stand on this issue and where my opponent stands, who’s supporting me in this campaign and who’s supporting [Ernst].” The Politico story states: “Iowans say wavering on corn ethanol once would have been certain political suicide in a state where 90 percent of the land is farm acreage. So Braley sought to capitalize on Ernst’s expressed qualms about big government, portraying her as someone Iowans can’t trust Republican, won the Senate seat formerly held by Democrat Tom Harkin by 8.5 percentage points.

The EPA’s unwillingness to do its job by setting ethanol volumes — along with ethanol’s loss of “political heft” — should provide the impetus for ending the complex and wasteful RFS program. Ethanol is a rare topic where environmentalists and energy advocates agree. Now is the on board. When the new Congress convenes this month, it should give the RFS an “F” and reform, revise, or even repeal it.

Cougar Robotics competes in FLL World Class Challenge ROCKFORD — Cougar Robotics, from Eastland Jr/Sr High School in Lanark, participated in the First Lego League robotics program Dec. 20 in the regional qualifying tournament at EisenhowerMiddleSchoolinRockford.

Although the Cougars did not qualify for the state championship, the team placed fourth out of 12 teams.

The theme for this year’s tournament was “AWorld Class.” In the 2014 FLL WORLD CLASS Challenge, teams attempted to teach adults about the ways kids need and want to learn.

Along with programming robots, teams also were evaluated on their robot design, a research project, and ability to demonstrate the FLL Core Values (teamwork, collective learning, active participation and gracious professionalism).

HHS announces $3 million award to Illinois To improve health care quality, accessibility and affordability WASHINGTON, D.C. — Illinois will receive up to $3 million to design health care payment and service delivery models that will improve health care quality and lower costs, Secretary of Health and Human Services Sylvia M. Burwell announced Dec. 16.

Nationwide, 28 states, three territories and the District of Columbia will receive more than $665 million in Affordable Care Act funding to design and test health care payment and service delivery models that will improve health care quality and lower costs. Together with awards released in early 2013, more than half of states (34 states, three territories and the District of Columbia), representing nearly two-thirds of the population, are participating in comprehensive state-based innovation in health system transformation.

“We are committed to partnering with Illinois to advance the goals we all share: better care, smarter spending, and, ultimately, healthier people,” Burwell said. “We’re seeing states do some very innovative things when it comes to improving the ways we deliver care, pay providers, and distribute information. These funds will support states in integrating and coordinating the many elements of health care – including Medicaid, Medicare, public health, and private health care delivery systems – to the taxpayers alike.”

Vehicle renewal sticker receipt bill becomes law SPRINGFIELD — Legislation to allow a printed receipt from the secretary of state to serve temporarily as the vehicle renewal sticker became law Thursday.

Public Act 98-1103 allows motorists to drive without an up-toto their license plate provided they have a receipt in their vehicle from the secretary of state that proves they bought a sticker online before expiration, but have not yet received it.

The receipt is valid only for 30 days from the sticker’s expiration date.

“This is another consumerfriendly initiative that encourages Secretary of State Jessie White, who proposed the legislation, said in a news release.

In October, more than 104,000 customers bought vehicle renewal registration stickers during the last 2 days of the month. The vast majority did so at a facility; just over 5,000 bought renewal stickers online.

implementing a customized, fully developed proposal capable of creating statewide health transformation.

Examples initiatives include: • Improving primary care through patient centered medical homes, building upon current Accountable Care Organization models or integrating primary care and behavioral health services.

• Providing technical assistance and data to health care providers and payers that are working to advance models of integrated, team-based care, or transition to value-based payment models.

• Creating unified quality measure score cards that health care payers and providers can use to align quality improvement and value based payment methodologies.

• Expanding the adoption of health information technology to

improve patient care.

• Fostering partnerships between public, behavioral, and primary health care providers.

• Strengthening the health care workforce through educational programs, inter-professional training, primary care residencies and community health worker training.

Today’s awards include both states that are designing plans and strategies for statewide innovation and states that are taking the next step from designing to testing and implementing comprehensive statewide health transformation plans.

Nearly $43 million in State Innovation Model Design Awards will support 17 states, including Illinois, three territories, and the District of Columbia to create and health care transformation.

More than $622 million in State Innovation Model Test Awards will support eleven states – Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Idaho, Iowa, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Rhode Island, Tennessee and Washington – in implementing their State Health Care Innovation Plans.

These states join six previous round one Model Test awardees: Arkansas, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Oregon, and Vermont.

States will engage a broad group of stakeholders including health care providers and systems, long-term service and support providers, commercial payers, state hospital and medical associations, tribal communities and consumer advocacy organizations. Transformation efforts supported by this initiative must improve health, improve care and lower costs for Medicare, Medicaid, and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP)

will identify best practices among state-led transformations that are potentially scalable to all states.

The State Innovation Models initiative is one part of an overall effort to help lower costs and improve care through the Affordable Care Act. Initiatives like Accountable Care Organizations, the Partnership for Patients and others have helped reduce hospital readmissions in Medicare by nearly 8 percent between 2007 and 2013 – translating into 150,000 fewer readmissions – and quality improvements have resulted in saving 50,000 lives and $12 billion in health spending from 2010 to 2013, according to preliminary estimates.

First month of open enrollment begins in Illinois WASHINGTON, D.C. — According to a report released by the Department of Health and Human Services, 121,243 people in Illinois selected plans through the Health Insurance Marketplace leading up to the Dec. 15 deadline for coverage that began Jan. 1.

About 80 percent of Illinoisans who selected health insurance plans ment were determined eligible for monthly premiums, compared to 73 percent who selected plans over

a similar period last year. Of the 121,243 Illinoisans who selected a plan, 46 percent re-enrolled in a Marketplace plan in 2015 and 54 detailed analysis of enrollment

Activities at the Senior Center Recycling Senior Service earns a great deal of money each year through the efforts of those who gather newspapers and aluminum cans in their respective communities, and those who bundle the paper and haul it to the local distribution centers.

We need more help with this project. The “gathering” people work just a couple of hours a month in their respective communities.

The “bundlers” work at the Senior Center just about any day when they have an hour or two to spare.

And the “loaders/haulers” help load and/or haul the papers to the distribution center.

Seniors Around the County Great River Outreach The Great River Outreach offers a delicious meal, friendship, and good conversation at two locations. In Savanna, food is served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the former Chestnut Park School near Poopy’s, south of town on state Route 84. In Mount Carroll, food is served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Carroll United Methodist Church. Any age is welcome. Donations are accepted but not required. Penny Von Essen cooks for both locations and food is brought to Mount Carroll. Volunteers are involved in this endeavor.

Obituaries Harold G. Schimanski

Harold G. Schimanski had one goal everyday, and that goal was to make at least one person smile.

At the age of 88, he entered into heaven at Big Meadows Nursing Home, Savanna, IL, on Sunday, Jan. 4, 2015. A prayer service will be Harold G. held at 11 a.m., Schimanski Thursday, Jan. 8, at Law-Jones Funeral Home in Hanover, IL. Burial will take place in Evergreen Cemetery, Hanover. Visitation will be held 10:30 – 11 a.m. at the funeral home prior to the prayer service.

Harold was born on June 1, 1926, the son of Frank and Cecelia (Winski) Schimanski in Chicago, IL. He attended Lane Tech High School and graduated with the Class of 1946. Following high school, Harold enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps and honorably served his country. He was a master machinist tool and dye maker for many small businesses. On May 15, 1948, Harold married the love of his life Betty Leeks in Chicago.

Harold enjoyed dancing, roller Michigan, and Apple Canyon. He also was an avid golfer and skier and had the nickname “Smoke” for skiing so fast down the slopes.

Harold coached golf for the Scales Mound Golf team for a couple of years. Most of all, Harold treasured the life he had with Betty.

Harold will be dearly missed by his wife Betty of Apple River, IL; godson, Ken (Linda) Mulholland of Hanover; sister in-law, Cookie Alveres of Ava, MO, and a niece, Raqual (Bill) Lewis of MO. Harold was preceded in death by his parents.

James LeRoy Atherton

James LeRoy Atherton, 84, of Freeport, passed away Thursday Jan. 1, 2015. He was born to Robert and Wavie (Sisler) Atherton on April 17, 1930; he was the youngest of 12.

Jim grew up in Lanark and graduated from Lanark High School. He played many sports while in school

(track, football and basketball).

Jim met his high school sweetheart Julia Weisz while at Lanark High and they married shortly after graduation in 1949. Jim and Judy went off to DeKalb for a short time and attended NIU. In the early 1950s James LeRoy they moved to Atherton southern California where he worked in the grocery business. In the mid 1970s they moved to northern California and he continued to work in the grocery business.

Jim loved to work with wood and built many beautiful pieces.

Building grandfather clocks was one of his specialties. Jim and Judy decided to retire and in 1990 they moved back to Illinois and they brought their entire family. That really meant moving three families

James is survived by two children: Kurtis (Susan) Atherton and Kathleen (Jay) Leary; three grandchildren: Shannon (Rodney) Pritchett, Nathan (Layla) Atherton, and Jessica (Jared) Green; six great-grandchildren: Noah Haring, Owen Haring, Seth Pritchett, Dylan Atherton, Will Pritchett, and Danika Atherton; three sisters: Brenda Stanberry, Claire Beisemier, and Wilma (Richard) Weber; one sister-in-law: Iva Atherton; one brother-in-law, Donald Hannabager; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded by his wife, Julia Charleen Weisz Atherton, one grandson, Spencer James Atherton; one great-grandson: Lathan Alexander Atherton; three brothers: Robert, Herald, and John Atherton; Black, Emma Hannabager, Mary Gaul, and Jeanette McFadden; one sister-in-law, Lena Atherton; four brother-in-laws: Arthur Crofton, Brett Black, Richard Stanberry, and Edmond McFadden; and three nephews: Donald Waddelow, Michael Atherton, and Jerry Weber.

Services will be private; arrangements are being handled by the Russell-Frank Funeral Home.

Gerald E. Wiersema

Gerald E. Wiersema, 76, of Fulton, IL, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2015, at Harbor Crest Nursing Home, Fulton.

Gerald (Gerry) was born April 15, 1938, in Fulton, the son of Harvey L. and Christine L. (Houzenga). He married Irene J. Gerald E. Voss on Aug. 21, Wiersema 1959, in Fulton.

She preceded him in death on July 26, 1984. He later married Barbara G. Beattie on June 28, 1985, in Fulton.

Gerry is a member of the Spring Valley Reformed Church, Fulton; currently attended the Living Bread Fellowship, Sterling, IL. Gerry worked at J.T. Cullens, Fulton, for 23 years as a welder and electrician, retiring in 1985. He then farmed from 1985 to 2006 in the rural Thomson area. He also worked in construction for a few years.

Gerry enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He coached and pitched fast pitch softball for several years. He was an avid hunter and hiking in the woods, picking blackberries, mushroom and ginseng hunting.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara of Fulton; 3 daughters, Cheryl (Randy) Bevins of Moline, IL, Lois (Rod) Grove of Lanark, IL, and Lora (Laverne) Medenblik of Plattsmouth, Nebraska; 1 adopted son, Kevin Wiersema of Fond du Lac, WI; 4 step children, Charles Young of Roodhouse, IL, Elizabeth Young of Vandalia, MO, Ronda Young of Freeport, IL, and Ginger Richards of Roodhouse, IL; 8 grandchildren; 14 step grandchildren; 1 great grandson; 11 step great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Esther Gann of Fulton, and Kathy (Jim) Van Zuiden of Fulton; and 2 brothers, Bernard “Butch” (Carol) Wiersema of Fulton, and Larry (Kathy) Wiersema of Fulton.

He is preceded in death by his sons, Gary Medenblick and Travis Bohl; 1 brother-in-law, Larry Gann; and 1 nephew, Paul Wiersema.

Gathering of friends and family will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday,

Jan. 6, 2015, at the McDonald Funeral Home, Fulton. Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with Pastor Randy be at the Fulton Township Cemetery.

Patricia earned a Bachelor in Home Economics from Millikin University in 1952 and a Masters from Iowa State in 1954. She went on to teach Home Economics in Chenoa, Park Ridge, Greenview town. She also worked for the May Department Store Company and was a Diamond Star Employee.

Morrison students end year giving to community

By LYNNETTE FORTH For Prairie Advocate MORRISON — The Morrison Board of Education met for the last regular meeting of the year on Dec. 22.

High school Principal Kay Harwood informed the board that more than 20 KEY Club members assisted in the Christmas Walk. They helped line up the parade, and set up and take down barricades. Students also provided babysitting at the PTO meeting and helped the kindergarten with its Thanksgiving Feast. Members also bought gifts for those 12 and older from the Giving Tree.

Student Council members sponsored 17 kids from the Methodist Church’s Helping Hands program and bought them warm clothing and a small toy. Gifts also were bought for 14 other kids, for a total of $,1400. Council members also

wrapped 300 presents.

Five high school students have been selected as All-State Musicians: Eryn Young, Kyle McCoy, Eric Sipes, Andrew Rinker, and Isabel VanderBleek will perform at the Peoria Civic Center Jan. 28-31.

by Kate Ling, former pastor of Lanark United Methodist Church, who was initially asked to lead the group. After a short time, Ling realized that her responsibilities as pastor sometimes prevented her from being with the group.

“I have a background in family and substance abuse counseling, and Pastor Kate asked me if I would asset her as facilitator,” Bjarnson said. “Now that she is retired, I lead the group by myself.”

“Most of our participants join us for moral support, but the Gable said. “We searched out more information about the program, which is funded through the state of Illinois. “But there are also emotional issues that come along with raising a family member. Right now, we are doing a fair amount of focus on the grieving process, because we have had so many losses - three deaths - within the group this past year.”

Basically, anything that is presenting a problem may be brought to the group. “I am a facilitator, not

a therapist,” she said. “Members of the group help each other. They will share information about things that have worked or not worked for them, and I am there to see that the group runs smoothly, or to give them information on substance abuse, which is often a problem at times when grandparents are taking over the raising of their grandchildren.”

“Sometimes, people feel isolated when they are left in a situation where they are responsible for grandchildren, or nieces and nephews,” Bjarnson said.

“It’s a life-change, and you tend to feel like you’re the only one going through it. You can easily become overwhelmed. It helps to know that there are other people out there who understand, and you can talk to them about it.”

GORRC meets at 12:30 p.m. the last Tuesday of the month at the Carroll County Senior Center.

A sandwich lunch is provided; participants are asked to call by noon the Monday before the meeting for the meal count.

By Gloria Yoder How about it? Christmas has come and gone, now we’re looking at another year. set aside a special day to celebrate Jesus’s birthday even though his birthday may not have been exactly on Christmas Day. Truly, Jesus is the reason for the season!

Christmas also is an opportunity to spend time with family and friends. This year we, along with the rest of my family and some other friends, were invited to my brother Micah and his wife, Rose’s house.

Earlier this year, Micah and Rose bought a new house, so we were all excited about the idea of of gathering there on Christmas Eve. We enjoyed an evening of fellowship as we sat around tables

I asked Julia what her highlight was. She said the rides with their little bouncy horse and the homemade chocolate candy were her favorites.

Micah also had invited everyone over for a sleepover. “Since you have a baby, we’ll give you one of the bedrooms if you stay for the night,” Rose informed me.

Wow, that was certainly kind of her. The offer was too good to turn down. Each of us took our own bedding along. The others spread throughout the house, allowing everyone their privacy. Some slept in the basement while others were in the living room, etc.

That’s why I suggest that if you don’t have a timer, grab a chair once they start browning and sit beside the oven with a book and read until they’re browned only around the edges. The center will seem a bit doughy, but it sets as it cools. My family loves coconut, so I dump extra coconut but, of course, it is optional as well as the chocolate chips.”

Teenagers have been volunteering at CGH since 1957. Teenage girls, or TAGS, were added to the auxiliary in 1957 to boost adult services during the summer vacation months. Nine years later, teenage boys, or TABs, were added.

Over time, the programs merged and the term Volunteen was created.

Students in the program either greet visitors in the main lobby or they work in the hospital’s gift shop.

“When students work in the gift shop, they wait on customers,” Keaschall said. “They help people select merchandise. They also work the cash register.”

Quinn’s haste makes waste of at least $50K CAPITOL

The only way around litigation is to create a well-thought-out constitutional amendment and to allow voters to vote on it in 2016.

You may have heard the old proverb “haste makes waste,” or maybe you like William Shakespeare’s fancier version of the proverb from Romeo and Juliet: “wisely and slow; they stumble that run fast.” In this case, both sayings hold true — the governor’s haste to push through legislation creates an initial waste of $50,000 or more dollars. On top of that, we’ll have potential litigation costs and perhaps the intangible cost of poorly-planned legislation.

All of these costs could be avoided if we simply waited a few more weeks to begin the process of creating and drafting legislation or a possible constitutional amendment.

Unless, of course, there is a hidden agenda of other legislation waiting to surface. Stay tuned.

Students who work the front desk provide guests with room numbers and help people get to a location.

“If we have a patient being discharged, they will help the patient get to their vehicle and they will help bring the discharged patients from their room,” Keaschall said.

Volunteens must be in, or be entering, high school, and must complete an application which includes two references, a copy of immunization records, a consent form signed by parent or guardian, and a volunteer behavior agreement signed by the teen and a parent or guardian.

“We have pretty strict policies, but we are trying to teach the students some skills that will hopefully bensaid. “We want teens who want to be here and not have to be here.”

All of the students currently in the program are teenage girls.

“Traditionally, there are always more females serving as volunteers than males,” Keaschall said. “Health care is dominated for the most part by females, but that is changing.”

The students in the program are from local school districts, most from Sterling and Rock Falls, Keaschall said. There is a volunteen from Erie, and one from Dixon who recently joined the program.

They work year-round, even when school is out, and say they get a lot from it.

“I like to get out in the community and show my face,” said Morgan Zuidema, a 17-year-old senior from Sterling High School who works at the front desk. “It makes me feel good about myself when I spend time helping other people that really need the help.”
