Clint’s big day, we were able to connect. It was already his birthday where he is. Clint shared that he could be joining his brother in Hawaii before the end of the year.

Matt celebrated his big day on Sunday.

We weren’t able to connect in a phone call as he was out enjoying the beautiful day with friends. I am very proud of both of my young men. It is hard for me to understand that so many years have passed since getting to meet them.

This month marked the first time our men’s and women’s breakfast groups have met since the start of the pandemic. The groups were small to start off with but are expected to grow over the next few months.

This past week marked the start of school for many area children, teachers, staff, and bus drivers. This was an especially exciting week for me as I met my students for the first time. The first few days were spent getting to know one another.

By the time we made it to Friday afternoon, the students and I had learned so much about each other. The students were able to work with partners on several tasks and questions. Listening to them chatter and discuss was really wonderful for me.

I posted on Facebook that I had started my new career. I received so many happy messages of support from friends and fam-

ily. So many people added comments that I was meant to teach. I am the first to admit that I don’t always agree with everyone else.

Teaching is really hard. Some days are more difficult than others. I am lucky to have such great friends and family that don’t focus on my struggles. They help me celebrate my accomplishments.

Even though God knows all of our struggles, He chooses to see the best in each of us. Because He loves us so much, we want to do our best for Him. His love overcomes all of our frustrations, our struggles, and our worst days.

It feels good that we are known and loved like that. His peace fills us in a way that we can carry it with us. We have the courage and hope to keep facing each day as it comes, all because He loves us without conditions or limits.

I hope that you will join us next Sunday in our little church in the country. Come and hear about God’s love without end.

Join us for worship and a time of praise and prayer. Now is the time to get to know the One who loves you.

BY KAREN MERLAK The last month of the summer season brings many warm days, warm nights, and many goodies from the local gardens. God has blessed us with sun and some rain for the gardens that have provided food for our families. For the many ways He cares for us, we are forever grateful.

This morning in church, we were greeted by Judy Riffle. This week will be the last installment of Pastor Charlotte’s midweek prayer service on Wednesday.

Counting down the Sundays has only made the time go too fast for us.

Charlotte will be leaving us soon to enter into her next phase of retirement.

She has made a lasting impact on our church family and will be missed. She has been a great friend of mine for getting out and going anywhere. I know she is looking forward to exploring her southern home, too.

This has been a busy week for our family. Matt and Clint both celebrate birthdays in August, just three days apart. When they were young, they shared their celebration day. Even though they are close, I would try and have a small cake for each of them for their special day.

ehinton@oglecountynews.com OREGON — A brief storm that blew through Oregon early Tuesday night knocked down trees, downed electrical lines, and started a car fire.

Fire crews blocked off the 500 block of Madison Street, just north of the Nash Recreation Center, after a large limb came crashing down pulling live electrical wires with it.

The line fell on a car that was parked on the north side of the street and started a fire.

The car belonged to Lesley Sheffield, an employee of the Oregon Park District.

Firefighters blocked traffic from the block as they waited for Com Ed crews to come and disconnect the line.

Two blocks to the north, a large tree was knocked down on the Ogle County Courthouse Lawn.

Rigo and Rosa Jimenez of Rochelle left a family gathering at a nearby restaurant and pub to check out the big hollow tree.

“Look inside,” said Rigo, 11, to Rosa, 13.

And at the corner of N. Fourth Street (Illinois 2) and Monroe, another large tree had fallen onto a house knocking out its electrical service.

Oregon Fire Chief Michael Knoup said his department responded to at least 14 calls regarding storm damage.

Kinzinger asks Biden to keep Byron, Dresden open SHAW MEDIA WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, asked the Biden administration to use executive authority to keep the Byron and Dresden nuclear power stations operating.

Kinzinger, in a letter addressed to President Joe Biden, asked that emergency powers be used until the legislative process in Illinois or Washington offers a solution.

Kinzinger is a member of the U.S. House energy and commerce committee. He and U.S. Rep. Mike Doyle, a Pennsylvania Democrat, introduced legislation in early August to establish a financial credit program for certain civil nuclear power plants.

The issue is seen by power companies as an uneven playing field for different types of power generation; the result is that nuclear power operates at a financial loss.

Exelon Generation, which operates Byron, announced last year that it intends to retire that plant in September. Dresden, which is in Morris, is slated to close in November. The Byron plant is licensed to operate for another 20 years, Dresden for 10.

“This, of course, is a serious problem and one that requires swift action,” Kinzinger said in a release announcing his appeal. “My constituents and the communities I serve are desperately asking me for help, so I’m pulling out all the stops.”

Exelon: Plants operated at full power during hottest months As the world recorded its hottest month on record in July, Exelon Generation’s Illinois nuclear plants again operated at full power levels, producing enough carbon-free electricity to keep air conditioners running and more than 11 million homes and businesses cool, Exelon officials said in an Aug. 24 news release.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration called July the hottest month since it began keeping records 142 years ago. Several hot weather alerts calling for maximum electricity generation in Illinois were issued by grid operators PJM and MISO during that time, and Exelon’s Illinois nuclear fleet answered the call, delivering 99% reliability in June and 99.9% in July.

“Our nuclear facilities are among the most reliable power plants in the country, and we know how important it is for them to be available during extremely hot weather conditions like we’ve experienced recently across Illinois,” said Shane Marik, senior vice president for Midwest operations at Exelon Generation. “I thank our hardworking nuclear employees for ensuring our fleet contin-

Exelon’s Illinois nuclear fleet regularly provides near-perfect reliability,

one of many indicators that industry experts use to rate efficiency and performance, according to the release. During the hottest months of 2019 and 2020, Illinois nuclear reactors also operated 98.9% and 99.2% of the time respectively.

“During the hottest summer days and coldest winter nights, Exelon Generation’s nuclear fleet has been critical to meeting peak electricity demand in Illinois. Having Illinois’ nuclear fleet available during times of peak demand means the system doe not need to rely as much on fossil plants when the temperature spikes, avoiding harmful air pollution that disproportionately affects communities of color and low-income communities,” the release states.

Illinois is home to six nuclear power plants. Exelon’s Illinois nuclear fleet produces more than 50% of the state’s electricity and includes Braidwood Generating Station in Will County; Byron Generating Station in Ogle County; Clinton Power Station in DeWitt County; Dresden Generating Station in Grundy County; La Salle County Generating Station; and Quad Cities Generating in Rock Island County.

Exelon Generation is a subsidiary of Exelon Corp. and is the nation’s largest producer of carbon-free energy, powering more than 20 million homes and businesses through a diverse generation fleet with about 30,000 megawatts of capacity.

OREGON – Oregon is a big deal for Tom and Jan Champley.

“Oregon’s a big part of our lives,” Tom Champley said Monday. “We raised our three kids here. Seven of our nine grandkids live in Oregon – although three of them are off to college.”

The couple has called the city home for 50 years, Jan Champley said.

“Now that we’re both retried, we’re finally able to give back a little more than when we were working full time,” she said.

The Champleys were recognized for all they do at the annual Oregon Area Chamber of Commerce awards dinner, where they were named Citizens of the Year. The event took place Aug. 19 at Stronghold Camp and Retreat Center in Oregon.

Chamber Board of Director members Rob Gieraltowski and Jeff Bold presented the award.

“This husband and wife team have spent the last 50 years serving out community on multiple boards, volunteering for organizations and continuing to give back to our community in many ways,” Gieraltowski said prior to the winners being announced.

Bold continued, noting that the winners volunteer with village of Progress, the Oregon Lions Club, Lutheran Outdoor Ministries Center and Northern Illinois Food Bank and also serve Thanksgiving meals to Serenity Hospice & Home families.

Receiving the award was “very humbling,” Jan Champley said.

“It was an extreme honor and totally unexpected on my part,” she said.

Tom Champley agreed. Their daughter had told them their son-in-law was getting an award, so that’s why they attended the dinner, he said.

“We were expecting him to get an award, and we did instead,” Tom Champley said.

The Champleys said they appreciate the work the Chamber of Commerce has done over the past few years for new businesses and downtown Oregon.

“Downtown Oregon seems to be really thriving right now, and we’re very proud of that and what the Chamber has done,” Tom Champley said.

The Volunteer of the Year award went to Mary Coulter for her work with the Oregon Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8739.

“I was truly speechless,” Coulter said Tuesday. “I was surprised. I just really didn’t expect it at all.

“With me being relatively new to the area and not knowing very many people, it is quite an honor,” she said.

“Words just don’t come.”

serious financial issues. This person makes trips to purchase groceries at her expense, averages almost 40 hours a week doing things for the kitchen and the VFW. the post would have failed if not for her volunteering to keep it going.”

That would be tragic, Hazzard said.

“The Oregon VFW post is a nonprofit organization,” she said. “Their proceeds all go toward providing benefits for veterans and those in need. Our community is very thankful for all they do.”

Coulter said she was just helping the VFW stay open through the pandemic and “didn’t realize that anyone was

really paying attention.”

Saving the VFW was a matter of teamwork, she said.

“I was just cooking. That’s all,” Coulter said.

Other awards

Simply Home, owned by Chris and Diane Weber, won the Welcome to the Chamber award. Oregon United Methodist Church was given the Civic Leadership award. The Business of the Year award went to RE/MAX of Rock Valley.

Chamber Executive Director Liz Vos was surprised with a special award – the “Going Above and Beyond” award – presented by the Chamber’s Board of Directors.

The Ogle County Democrats are host a fundraising luncheon Sept. 19 at the Lorado Taft Campus of Northern Illinois University in Oregon.

Tickets are $50 for an individual and $80 for a couple. Each ticket gives the ticket holder a chance at winning raffles being held, with the grand prize of $1,000 being drawn that day along with other cash prizes.

Dinner is included with the ticket price. Raffle tickets also are available for non-attendees at $50 each; ticket holders need not be present to win.

The event begins at 1 p.m., and a turkey dinner luncheon with all the fixings will start at 2 p.m.

Born: November 20, 1944 Died: August 12, 2021 Betty Bleistein, 76, slipped away from our arms into the loving arms of Jesus on August 12, 2021.

She was born on November 20, 1944, in Chicago, IL, to Russell Haak and Zola Bailey Haak. When she was just a toddler, her family moved back to the family farm after her father finished his duty in the Army. She grew up a farm girl and lived her entire life in Polo. She met the love of her life, Joe Bleistein in high school. They were engaged at their Christmas dance senior year and married June 29, 1963.

For many years Betty was a stay-at-home mom to Scott and Kelly. She began working as school secretary at Centennial School in Polo. She then worked for Kreider Services in Dixon IL. While there, she attended Sauk Valley College, earning an associate degree. She moved on to a position in the office of the Dixon Correctional Center. While there she finished her bachelor’s degree in accounting at Western Illinois University. She worked in accounting at the correctional center until her retirement.

Betty was very active with the Polo Public Library, serving on the board for many years.

She was also active at her church, St Mary’s Catholic Church in Polo serving on many boards and councils. She was a member and served as a leader with AFSCME Local Union 817. Up until her passing she was also very active at the Polo Senior Center.

Betty is survived by her husband of 58 years, Joe; son Scott with wife Shelly and children Conor, Maeve and Ava; and daughter Kelly, with husband Scott and children Anna, Leah and Maya. She is also survived by her sisters, Beverly Pace and Pat Haak; sister-in-law, Donna Niemczyk and husband Denny, brother-in-law Bob Bleistein and wife Rickie;and several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and -nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; nephews, Brian Pace and John Pace; and brother-in-law, Jim Bleistein.

Visitation will be held on Friday, September 3rd at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Polo from 9 to 11 a.m. Mass will begin at 11 a.m. Burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery will follow immediately after. Cremation has been accorded.

In lieu of flowers the family request memorials in her name to the Polo Public Library or the Polo Senior Center.

We have a new great grandson who is 3 weeks old. His name is Fritz Arthur Obendorf, and he is welcomed by two big sisters.

They are soon to have a big party celebrating the birth of this new little guy, big sister Holly’s fifth birthday, a back-to-school bash, and come see our new home.

I was debating whether or not to go to this big family gathering. The virus is still out there, and I would be around many different people. Somehow I felt this would not be a good idea, but I also wanted to see the new baby and see their new home.

Then, last week Bruce and Steve had a golf outing in the city, and while they were doing that, Robin and I could visit the new baby. I could avoid all the extra people and enjoy a day in the city. This would work out fine. I had not been in that direction for many months.

We took off in the middle of the morning and even enjoyed a wonderful lunch at the golf course. That was a special treat, and I enjoyed seeing all the flowers planted carefully at the golf club. Then it was on to Allen and Mallory’s new home.

The baby was sound to sleep when we arrived, so I toured the house.

Allen did not want a cookie-cutter

POLO HISTORY Betty Obendorf house, and this home definitely is not that.

All brick with stone accents and not built by a contractor. Many peaks and valleys with unique little spots inside.

A home that thinks of children with a tunnel slide that goes from the first floor into the basement and you return by the way of a ladder. Kids love it.

There is a stairs for the adults, so I did not have to sail down to the basement wondering how I was going to land.

I was impressed with the framed artwork of the girls hung beautifully on the walls. I remembered the days when I just tacked my kid’s stuff on the walls of the refrigerator. Now these pictures made by Holly and Rose are part of the interior design, and the kids are made to feel important.

Then I was introduced to Fritz Arthur, and it was nice to hold a new baby again. There is something about a newborn baby that is simply awesome and cuddly.

Soon, it was time for him to go back

to bed, and Robin and I headed to Riverside to visit Andrew, Liz and Archer.

They also have a new home in Riverside. This is near the Brookfield Zoo and not too far from where my folks lived for many years after they left Polo.

I remember my dad taking me to Riverside to a big J.C. Penney’s store – or maybe it was Sears. My, that was years ago.

The entire town of 8,645 people has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. When we entered the downtown and I saw the water tower, I knew this was not the usual type of city.

All the streets curve and have a little park at the end, which could be very confusing but Robin handled it nicely. Oh, to be young again and drive in the city. Each house was very different with all types of architecture.

I wanted to study each one, but we did not have time.

Andrew and Liz’s new home also has its own style with two porticos or colonnades in the front and back that stand out and say “look at me.” The home was built by her father many years ago, and Liz grew up in this house.

It is between an elementary school

and a condo, which is also on the register. Archer will not have far to walk to school when he is older.

We soon settled on the deck in the big backyard, which is wonderful with all the different kinds of foliage. We seemed to be in our own quiet little haven in the midst of the city.

Archer showed us all his toys as he played nearby. He loves a yard for the first time. It was a pleasant time just to sit and visit. I enjoyed it immensely.

We could hear the Metra, which was not too far away, but we were in our own little world.

Soon it was time to head back to Allen and Mallory’s for dinner, which Allen cooked all on the grill and finished in the oven. We had pork chops, pineapple, sweet potatoes and zucchini, which tasted so good when I have hardly been doing any cooking.

Bruce soon joined us after a day of golfing, and that evening we headed back to Polo. It was a wonderful day in the city.

Start thinking of our October meeting on the 6th when we have a special program for Polo Historical Society on the history of Coca Cola given by Dick Volker. Put it into your calendar.

The Illinois Department of Public Health is offering a free COVID-19 vaccine clinic from 2 to 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 20 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 308 E. Brayton Road, Mt. Morris.

The Johnson & Johnson vaccine will be available for people 18 and older.

The Pfizer vaccine will also be available. You must be 12 or older to receive the Pfizer vaccine, which will require a second shot. The staff will help you find a clinic for the second shot.

Ag in the Classroom fundraiser selling 10 prepared, frozen meals OREGON – Have you been searching for a way to make dinner preparation simple? Ogle and Carroll counties’ Ag in the Classroom program can help.

The program is selling 10 prepared

and frozen meals that serve three to five people as its annual fundraiser.

The meals include hickory-smoked pulled pork; philly meatballs; breakfast burritos; pulled pork mac and cheese; chicken bacon ranch pasta; cheesy ham and potatoes; beef Wellington with gravy; chicken Parmesan; smoked pork loin; and barbecue pulled chicken.

The cost for the 10 meals is $165, with proceeds benefiting the Ogle-Carroll Ag in the Classroom Program.

Encore! artist in residence paints Mt. Morris Senior Center fence

The Mt. Morris Senior Center has a new mural thanks to Encore!’s artist in residence, Annie Timmer.

“We are very grateful for the new mural that was painted on our fence,” Director Melissa Nicholson said. “What started out as a brown fence with chipping paint has become a thing of beauty.”

Nicholson said Timmer and seniors worked together to come up with a design.

“After the seniors painted the background of the fence, Annie took over. She used many different volunteers from Encore! and from the community to complete her vision of large flowers,” Nicholson said.

“Annie even used pictures of flowers that she had taken herself to make the flowers look as realistic as possible.

“If you haven’t had a chance to check out the new fence at the Mt. Morris Senior Center make sure you stop by,” Nicholson said.

The senior center is located at 9 E. Front St. in Mt. Morris.

“All are welcome,” Nicholson said.

Welcome Stephanie Nissen, library director Stephanie grew up just down the road in Byron. She attended Rock Valley College for her associate degree and transferred to Northern Illinois University to complete a bachelor’s degree in English.

She is currently completing her master’s in library science. For the past 3½ years Stephanie has been at Rock Valley College Library as the circulation services coordinator.

Before that, she worked at Ida Public Library in Belvidere as the local history/ reference librarian and before that as library assistant at Byron Public Library. Stephanie is looking forward to getting to know the community!

Since no playoffs were held in the spring, the Marcos kept their title as reigning champs, and now a new group looks to keep the Marcos on top and match the feat from 2019.

“We’re a different team than the team that won the state title, but I think we can be as successful,” senior Tyler Merdian said. “We were all a part of the team, but we weren’t really a big part of the team. We just learned from those guys; they were great role models for us, and we just want to follow in their footsteps and have similar goals this year.

“We take it personally that we want to defend the state title. Since there was no state championship last year, we’re still the reigning state champs, and we want to keep that up.

Ted Alston enters the second season of his second stint as Polo’s head coach. He took over in 2000 and guided the Marcos to the playoffs five straight years from 2005-2009, stepping down after the 2010 season to focus on his duties as Polo’s athletic director.

He then took over again after Jeff Bumsted retired following the 2019 state title run and will be leading the Marcos in a full season of eight-man football for the first time this fall.

He’s aware that his players are looking at the season as a chance to defend their 2019 championship and likes the way it seems to be motivating them – especially with some new eight-man teams who were former rivals in the NUIC on their schedule this season.

that title team was full of talented seniors, this year’s players learned a lot from that veteran group and want to put their stamp on the program this fall.

“We want to show teams that we’re still the reigning state champions and we’re ready to fight every game. We don’t have everybody that we had in the state championship run, but we all know what it took to win that, so we’re all willing to work hard,” lineman Cooper Blake said. “Me and Tyler, we were both injured during the state championship run, so we got to sit there and watch and just see everything and what went into that every day.

“Some of the freshmen on that team who are juniors now worked with us, and those sophomores who are now se nior s work e d wit h the seniors on the state team, who showed us how to build a program and create a championship-wining team. It was really pretty good to be a part of that,

Continued from page 11 motivated by it,” Alston said. “Especially with teams coming in from the NUIC who we used to play all the time, that adds even more to it. You want to prove to them that if they want to come into eight-man and have success, they’ve still got to beat us at this point.

And it’s just fun because they’re teams we’re familiar with and we play them in everything else, so that added a lot of excitement this year.”

The Marcos will renew rivalries with Milledgeville, AFC and Amboy in the first three weeks of the season, and host former NUIC teams River Ridge and Aquin in Weeks 5 and 9.

“I’m glad we get to play a lot more of the kids we used to see in the NUIC,” Blake said. “We know those kids, and it’s fun to play against guys that you know and bring back some of those old rivalries like Milledgeville, Amboy, AFC. It’s nice to bring that back into football.

“It’s real nice to be back to normal.

Obviously you want to win all your games, and we’re expecting to have a strong season. We’re looking good out here, so I think we’re going to be all right.”

Even with most of those old rivals adjusting to the eight-man game for the first time, Alston doesn’t think that will play much of a factor this fall and doesn’t feel Polo’s experience with the style of

play will be too much of an advantage.

“There is some adjustment, but you still have to do all the things you did before well,” he said. “You still have to focus on the same things. It’s a little bit different scheme-wise, presents some challenges for you, but realistically, 90% of it is the same. You still have to try and do those same things well.

There’s a lot of good coaching staffs in those schools coming in, so I don’t think it’s going to be a big issue for them.”

Fans should expect to see the same old Polo attack on both sides of the ball this season.

“What we’ve been doing since 25 years ago, that’s kind of what we fell comfortable doing and what we’re familiar with, so we’ll be able to do that,” Alston said. “We’ve got some other things that we’re able to do pretty well this year; I like our skill players, but we’ll obviously try to establish the run and play strong defense like we’ve always done.

“All these older guys were around for the state championship team, which had some really good, hard-nosed kids, so they’ve learned from some pretty good role models.”

The biggest lesson these Marcos learned from that title team who came before them was the hard work and dedication it takes to win it all, and they’re ready to embrace that challenge.

“We just want to win,” Meridan said, “and I think we can do it because we’re a pretty well-rounded team, strong all around.”

Sheriff’s warning: Drive sober or get pulled over

As Labor Day and the unofficial end of summer near, the Ogle County Sheriff’s Department is partnering with law enforcement throughout the state to stop impaired driving and help save lives.

“While celebrations marking the last days of summer will look different this year from how they looked last year, there is certainly potential for an increase in the number of impaired drivers on the roads,” said Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle. “Impaired driving kills more than 10,000 people in the United States each year. Please plan ahead for a safe ride home before you leave the house. It truly is a matter of life or death.”

The high-visibility “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” enforcement campaign runs through the early-morning hours of Sept.

“During this period, motorists in Ogle County can expect to see stepped-up impaired driving patrols and seat-belt enforcement, particularly at night when seat-belt usage rates are at their lowest.

Speeders and distracted drivers should also be aware,” VanVickle said.

“If you’re celebrating this Labor Day, remember to designate a sober driver and don’t let friends or family members drive drunk. Even a small amount of alcohol can impair judgment and reaction times, making driving unsafe,” VanVickle said.

The Labor Day “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign is made possible by federal highway safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following activity.

Aug. 18 Deputies along with the Rochelle and Flagg Center fire departments responded to a two-vehicle crash with injuries at Flagg Road and Beebe Drive at 5:32 p.m.

After an investigation, deputies found that a Chevrolet SUV driven by Katie Harper, 33, of Rochelle, had stopped on Flagg Road behind another vehicle which was turning left onto Beebe Drive.

At that time, a Toyota Camry driven by a 16-year-old female failed to stop and ran into the rear of the Chevrolet.

The 16-year-old was transported by the Rochelle Fire Department ambulance to

Rochelle Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The 16-year-old was issued a citation for failure to reduce speed.

Brenton also was cited for operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Brenton was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Aug. 21 Deputies and Lynn-Scott-Rock EMS responded to North Walnut Street at West 2nd Street in Lindenwood for a vehicle pulled over on the side of the road with the driver experiencing a medical emergency. The driver, Gary Brenton, 33, of Woodstock, was checked by EMS and signed a refusal.

After an investigation, Brenton was arrested for driving while under the influence of intoxicating compounds (drugs/alcohol), possession of 15-100 grams of a controlled substance (heroin) and possession with intent to deliver 15-100 grams of heroin.

At 7:27 p.m., deputies and the Byron Fire Department responded to a single-vehicle crash in the 10000 block of Illinois Route 2.

After an investigation, it was determined a southbound vehicle driven by Sandra Koutlemanis, 51, of Des Plaines, traveled off the west edge of the roadway. The vehicle then overcorrected and entered the east ditch where it traveled down a small embankment before coming to a rest.

Koutlemanis was transported by Byron Fire/EMS to SwedishAmerican Hospital for minor injuries. The crash remains under investigation.

Aug. 22 Veronica Tabares, 35, of Sterling, was arrested at 5:17 p.m. for driving on a suspended license after a traffic stop in the 1000 block of South Daysville Road.

Tabares also was cited for operating an uninsured motor vehicle, no front license plant and improper use of registration.

Tabares was released on a $2,500 I-Bond.

Aug. 24 A 17-year-old male from Rockford was arrested by for driving with no license after being stopped for speeding (101 mph) on Interstate 39 near Monroe Center.

He was issued an I-Bond and released to his parents. He will appear in Ogle County court at a later date.

rrodgers@shawmedia.com DIXON – City officials are still trying to figure out why they weren’t notified of the release of the ex-comptroller convicted of embezzling $53.7 million and advocate for reversing the judgment.

Rita Crundwell was sentenced to 19 years and seven months in federal prison in 2013 for bilking nearly $54 million from the city across two decades to fund a lavish lifestyle and quarter horse breeding empire while the city built up debt and infrastructure continued to deteriorate. Her sentence was just shy of the 20-year maximum, and she was required to serve at least 85%.

That was until she left the Pekin prison on Aug. 4, a situation that remains a bit murky.

The Bureau of Prisons does not release the current whereabouts of released inmates, but she’s listed as staying in a halfway house in Chicago under the custody of the BOP. According to the BOP website, her term still does not end until Oct. 20, 2029.

She was in Dixon at least for a short while, though, Mayor Li Arellano Jr. said they “pretty much verified.”

If there’s a way to get Crundwell back behind bars, the city will lobby for it.

But there’s still the questions of how the process went down, and why the city didn’t have a chance to be part of it.

Crundwell applied for compassionate release last year, citing health

issues and fears of contracting COVID19, and the city sent a letter strongly opposing her release. She then pursued a more private course of review with the prison.

Arellano and City Manager Danny Langloss have reached out to several lawmakers, and they were told by U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin that Crundwell was on home-confinement on Aug. 4 and, supposedly, the BOP sent out notifications on July 7. It’s not clear who

Judge delcares mistrial after 2 jurors are caught sleeping during sex assault case

MORRISON – A mistrial was declared Aug. 18 in the trial of a Rock Falls man accused of sexually assaulting a 10-year-old girl after two jurors were observed sleeping during a presentation of video evidence.

Tyler S. Shaw-Sodaro, 30, was charged Nov. 29, 2018, with one count of sexual assault of a child younger than 13. investigators alleged that he fondled the girl’s chest Sept. 2, 2018.

He was free on bond when he was charged on July 25, 2019, with sexually assaulting a different 10-year-old girl.

He is charged in that case with five counts of predatory sexual assault, attempted predatory sex-

ual assault a n d t w o counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault.

Investigators in that case alleged that he Tyler S. Shaw-Sodaro, performed a 30, of Rock Falls variety of sex acts on the child between July 4, 2018, and Aug. 15, 2018.

He pleaded not guilty in both cases and is being held in Whiteside County jail on $200,000 bond.

The trial began Tuesday in the 2018 case. The jury was seated that morning and was shown a video in the afternoon. Jurors were released about 4:50 p.m.

Afterward, the court was advised

that two jurors were asleep during the video.

When the court reconvened Wednesday, a hearing was held with the two jurors, a court officer testified about their behavior, and Judge Trish Senneff dismissed them.

That left the trial without a quorum of 12 jurors, so a mistrial was declared.

Shaw-Sodaro, who is represented by Paul Whitcombe, has a pretrial conference Wednesday and a new trial was set for Sept. 21.

In January 2010, Shaw-Sodaro was sentenced in Whiteside County to four years of probation for aggravated robbery committed four months earlier; a count of armed robbery was dismissed per his plea agreement.

Durbin’s office also confirmed that Crundwell was released under the auspices of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act, passed in 2020 in response to COVID-19. It allows for the early release of nonviolent prisoners who meet certain criteria, such as their age, health, the nature of their crime and whether they are likely to offend again.

Even though the situation is an outrage to the city and community members, Langloss said they can’t let her have any more negative impact than she’s already inflicted.

The city plans to move ahead with its economic development streak, which includes grants for infrastructure improvements, interested industries looking to come to town, at least one new hotel on the horizon, and soon annexing more than 500 acres into the Dixon footprint.

Local beef producers sell direct to consumers ROCKFORD – BetterFed Beef has launched an e-commerce platform, creating the ability for consumers across the country to buy Mid west-raised beef, including from local producers.

The e-commerce website, BetterFedBeef.com, allows consumers to shop for beef by the cut or by specially curated boxes.

Once purchased, the beef is mailed directly to the customer’s home, packaged in dry ice. The online shopping experience is one that’s familiar, as the company designed and launched its site amid the growing popularity of direct-to-consumer food and grocery platforms such as InstaCart.com, UberEats and DoorDash.

At the very top of every website page, the visitor will notice the word and button labeled “producers.” Once clicked, a page opens, introducing the online shopper to 17 families.

Each family is owner and operator of a beef farm and produces the beef being sold on the e-commerce website.

In addition to raising the cattle and producing the beef, these families are also owners of BetterFed Beef.

Max Winders, one of the co-founders and an owner of BetterFed Beef, helped launch the company after retiring from a 28-year career in international agriculture that brought him to 59 of the world’s countries.

“The Midwest has some of the absolute best beef in the entire world, and our vision is to bring the most consistently flavorful and tender beef to households across America,” Winders said. “We want to accomplish this mission by connecting the best cattle producers, who are raising the best cattle, directly with consumers under the BetterFed Beef brand. More and more, consumers want to know where their food comes from and how it was grown and raised. We’re excited to be able to provide that direct connection between producers and consumers.”

Before BetterFeed Beef.com launched its e-commerce storefront, team members traveled across the Midwest visiting farms and families who agreed to supply BetterFedBeef. com’s products.

Each producing family was offered the chance to become much more than a supplier; they were offered the opportunity to become an owner of the company.

“I’ve been working wit hall of these families and farms for years,” said Tom Peters of Oregon, a co-founder and another BetterFed Beef owner. “We were already working with them to supply their incredible beef and we thought why not offer them the opportunity to be part of something unique and market their incredible beef directly to people around the country?”

Among the families and farms supplying beef as producer-owners are four families from Illinois, whose beef operations are located within 30 miles of Rockford.

These families are the Groenhagen family from Oregon, the Weber family from Winnebago, and the Book and Fritz families from Harvard.

“It meant a lot to be approached by Dr. Tom Peters and Max Winders with the chance to become owners,” said

Chad Groenhagen, an owner and beef producer of Circle G Farms & Feed Lots in Oregon. “BetterFedBeef helps us as producers get recognition for our superior beef and also helps us stay competitive as technology continues to change our industry in many ways, including folks migrating to purchasing their food online. Beyond that, it’s exciting to be on the cutting edge of something that’s evolving at a rapid pace.”

The families are four of only 17 fam-

ilies who chose to become producer-owners of the company. For them, becoming owners illustrates much more than a possible financial benefit.

“BetterFed Beef.com is a new company, and their success isn’t guaranteed,” said Jenny Weber, an owner and beef producer Weber Gale Farms in Winnebago. “What is for sure, though, is the high-quality beef we work hard every day to produce will now be available to any home across the country who wants to enjoy it, and that they’re going to purchase it knowing the families behind it.

“It brings us real satisfaction knowing our beef is being enjoyed,” Weber continued. “As a cattle producer, this is everything we could ask for.”

Secretary of State Jesse White, in his role as state librarian, announced the annual per capita grants last week.

Large print books, periodicals, audiobooks and ebooks are just some of resources local libraries will be able to buy.

State lawmakers increased the per capita award to $1.475 from $1.25.

Libraries can also choose to augment book delivery services, purchase computers and digital tablets, Spanish language materials, adult programming and promotional materials with the awards.

In all, the state will issue $18.1 million in grants to 638 libraries, which serve nearly 12 million patrons.
